Every year, a billion tires are discarded worldwide, with only a small percentage being recycled. This leads to significant environmental hazards, such as fire risks and improper disposal. Silty sand also presents technical challenges due to its poor shear strength, susceptibility to erosion, and low permeability. This study explores the incorporation of crumb rubber derived from waste tires into silty sand to enhance its mechanical properties. Crumb rubber particles of varying sizes (3–6 mm, 5–10 mm, and 10–20 mm) were mixed with silty sand at 0%, 3%, 6%, and 9% percentages, respectively. Triaxial compression tests of unconsolidated and consolidated undrained tests with cell pressures of 100, 300, and 500 kPa were conducted. The deviatoric stress, shear stress, and stiffness modulus were investigated. The results revealed that the addition of crumb rubber significantly increased the deviatoric and shear stresses, especially at particle sizes of 5–10 mm, with contents of 3%, 6%, and 9%. Additionally, the stiffness modulus was notably reduced in the mixture containing 6% crumb rubber tire. These findings suggest that incorporating crumb rubber tires into silty sand not only improves silty sand performance but also offers an environmentally sustainable approach to tire waste recycling, making it a viable strategy for silty sand stabilization in construction and geotechnical engineering performance. Pyrolysis technology currently serves as a significant method for recycling and reducing waste tires. In this paper, in order to improve the heat transfer efficiency during the pyrolysis of waste tires in a horizontal rotary furnace and the yield of pyrolysis oil, the effect laws of tire particle size, rotary furnace rotation speed, enhanced heat transfer materials, and adding spiral fins on heat transfer performance and pyrolysis product distribution were studied, respectively. The innovation lies in two aspects: first, aiming at the problems of slow heat transfer and low pyrolysis efficiency in horizontal rotary furnaces, we identified technical measures through experiments to enhance heat transfer, thereby accelerating pyrolysis and reducing energy consumption; second, with the goal of increasing high-value pyrolysis oil yield, we determined optimal operating parameters to improve economic and sustainability outcomes. The results showed that powdered particles of waste tires were heated more evenly during the pyrolysis process, which increased the overall heat transfer coefficient and the proportion of liquid products. When the rotational speed of the rotary pyrolysis furnace exceeded 2 rpm, there was sufficient contact between the material and the furnace wall, which was beneficial to the improvement of heat transfer performance. Adding heat transfer enhancement materials such as carborundum and white alundum could improve the heat transfer performance between the pyrolysis furnace and the material. Notably, a rotational speed of 3 rpm and carborundum were used as a heat transfer enhancement material with powdered waste tire particles during the pyrolysis process; the overall heat transfer coefficient was the highest, which was 16.89 W/(m2·K), and the proportion of pyrolysis oil products was 46.1%. When spiral fins were installed, the comprehensive heat transfer coefficient was increased from 12.78 W/(m2·K) to 16.32 W/(m2·K). The experimental results show that by increasing the speed of the pyrolysis furnace, adding heat transfer enhancing materials with high thermal conductivity to waste tires, and appropriate particle size, the heat transfer performance and pyrolysis rate can be improved, and energy consumption can be reduced. Using the enzyme-induced carbonate precipitation (EICP) technique to solidify rubber and clay mixtures as lightweight backfill is a feasible way to reduce waste tire impacts and boost rubber recycling in geotech engineering. In this study, a comprehensive laboratory investigation, including triaxial compression, oedometer, permeability, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) tests, was conducted on EICP-reinforced rubber particle solidified clay (hereafter referred to as EICP-RC solidified clay) to evaluate the effects of rubber particle content and size on the mechanical behavior of the improved soil under various solidification conditions and to elucidate the solidification mechanism. The results show that although rubber particles inhibit EICP, they significantly enhance the mechanical properties of the samples. The addition of 5% rubber particles (rubber A) increased cohesion by 11% and the internal friction angle by 18% compared to EICP-treated clay without rubber. Additionally, incorporating smaller-sized tire particles facilitated pore filling, resulting in lower compression and swelling indices and reduced permeability coefficients, making these materials suitable for use behind retaining walls and in embankment construction. Microplastics (MPs) are becoming an increasingly common pollutant in the aquatic environment, including stormwater. This is a serious problem, as stormwater is becoming an essential transport route for MPs from urban areas to surface waters. Rainwater flowing from roofs, roads, and other impermeable surfaces contains a variety of plastic particles originating from tire abrasion or waste disposal. This article presents an overview of current research on the occurrence of MPs in stormwater. The potential of selected green infrastructure solutions—particularly bioretention systems, constructed wetlands, and permeable pavements—for their reduction is assessed. Individual solutions present how the change in filter material, selection of vegetation, or the method of conducting the process (e.g., direction of stormwater flow in constructed wetlands) affects their effectiveness. The potential of green infrastructure is also compared with the traditional gray solution of sewage management in cities. This article emphasizes the importance of integrating such solutions in spatial planning as an effective tool to combat climate change and limit the spread of microplastics in the environment. As the global demand for electronic equipment continues to grow, many devices are being replaced more frequently, resulting in a rapid rise in electronic waste (e-waste), now the fastest growing waste stream worldwide. Motivated by this, the objective of this study is to present an environmentally friendly method to recycle acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene (ABS), one of the most common e-waste plastics, by using it for asphalt production. In contrast to earlier methods of plastic-modified asphalt production involving complex pretreatments or complimentary additives unsuitable for plant-scale use, this study aims to demonstrate a practical, low-cost solution through the use of carbon black. This approach included physically pretreating ABS plastics for size reduction and incorporating waste tire-derived carbon black to promote effective dispersion in asphalt during wet modification. The rheological properties of the e-waste-modified asphalt were subsequently assessed. The test results indicated that recycling ABS plastics with a blending content of 5% alongside 5% carbon black can enhance cold-weather cracking resistance and high-temperature anti-rutting performance of asphalt. The enhancement can be attributed to the proper preparation procedures of ABS plastics and the addition of carbon black, which can further improve the performance by promoting the proper dispersion of plastic particles in asphalt. The outcome of this study indicates that recycling e-waste plastics through asphalt production can lead to more green and sustainable asphalt construction, reduce total construction costs, and most importantly enhance performance. Aiming at the problems of serious pavement temperature diseases, low efficiency and high loss of ice-breaking methods, high occupancy rate of waste tires and the low utilization rate and insufficient durability of rubber particles, this paper aims to improve the service level of roads and ensure the safety of winter pavements. A pavement material with high efficiency, low carbon and environmental friendliness for active snow melting and ice breaking is developed. Firstly, NaOH, NaClO and KH550 were used to optimize the treatment of rubber particles. The hydrophilic properties, surface morphology and phase composition of rubber particles before and after optimization were studied, and the optimal treatment method of rubber particles was determined. Then, the optimized rubber particles were used to replace the natural aggregate in the polyurethane gel mixture by the volume substitution method, and the optimum polyurethane gel dosages and molding and curing processes were determined. Finally, the influence law of the road performance of RPGM was compared and analyzed by means of an indoor test, and the ice-breaking effect of RPGM was explored. The results showed that the contact angles of rubber particles treated with three solutions were reduced by 22.5%, 30.2% and 36.7%, respectively. The surface energy was improved, the element types on the surface of rubber particles were reduced and the surface impurities were effectively removed. Among them, the improvement effect of the KH550 solution was the most significant. With the increase in rubber particle content from 0% to 15%, the dynamic stability of the mixture gradually increases, with a maximum increase of 23.5%. The maximum bending strain increases with the increase in its content. The residual stability increases first and then decreases with the increase in rubber particle content, and the increase ranges are 1.4%, 3.3% and 0.5%, respectively. The anti-scattering performance increases with the increase in rubber content, and an excessive amount will lead to an increase in the scattering loss rate, but it can still be maintained below 5%. The fatigue life of polyurethane gel mixtures with 0%, 5%, 10% and 15% rubber particles is 2.9 times, 3.8 times, 4.3 times and 4.0 times higher than that of the AC-13 asphalt mixture, respectively, showing excellent anti-fatigue performance. The friction coefficient of the mixture increases with an increase in the rubber particle content, which can be increased by 22.3% compared with the ordinary asphalt mixture. RPGM shows better de-icing performance than traditional asphalt mixtures, and with an increase in rubber particle content, the ice-breaking ability is effectively improved. When the thickness of the ice layer exceeds 9 mm, the ice-breaking ability of the mixture is significantly weakened. Mainly through the synergistic effect of stress coupling, thermal effect and interface failure, the bonding performance of the ice–pavement interface is weakened under the action of driving load cycle, and the ice layer is loosened, broken and peeled off, achieving efficient de-icing. Porous artificial reef materials made of cement used in the offshore area can repair and improve the ecological environment and enrich fishery resources. In this study, quartz sand was used as the aggregate, high-alumina cement as the cementing agent, and crushed particles of waste tires as the modifier to prepare porous cement–polymer composites. Through orthogonal tests, the effects of the aggregate particle size, the ratio of aggregate to cement, the rubber particle size, and the rubber ratio on the strength and permeability of the porous cement–polymer composites were studied. The significant degrees of different influencing factors were analyzed, and an appropriate configuration scheme for the porous cement–polymer composites was proposed. The experimental results show that the quantity of rubber particles added and the particle size of the rubber particles have a relatively large impact on the properties of the porous cement–polymer composites. Through response surface tests, the interactive effects of various factors in the porous cement–polymer composites on the compressive strength and permeability of the material were verified. The microstructure of the porous cement–polymer composites was observed by SEM. The differences in the microstructure and internal structure between the specimens with a low rubber content and large rubber particle size and those with a high rubber content and small rubber particle size were analyzed, and the influence mechanism of the differences in the microstructure and internal structure on the strength and permeability was proposed. This scoping review examines the distribution, sources, and characterization of atmospheric microplastics (AMPs) in Southeast Asia (SEA), following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines. A comprehensive search of Scopus and PubMed identified 58 relevant articles, with 16 meeting the inclusion criteria. Findings indicate high microplastic (MP) concentrations in urban centres, notably in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand, a pattern driven by rapid urbanisation, industrial emissions, textile production, and insufficient waste management. Predominant polymer types include polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyester (PET), with fibres and black particles being the most common forms. Black particles, often linked to tire wear and vehicular emissions, underscore traffic pollution’s role in AMP distribution, while PET fibres reflect the influence of SEA’s textile industry. Geographic gaps were observed, with limited studies in countries such as Cambodia and Laos. The review highlights the need for standardised sampling and quantification methods to ensure data comparability and calls for expanded research into rural and coastal regions. Future studies should prioritise longitudinal investigations into the effects of chronic exposure on health; this is particularly relevant for nanoplastics (NPs) because of their greater potential for biological penetration. These insights form a crucial foundation for mitigating AMP pollution in SEA. Full article

This study explores the innovative use of recovered tire-derived aggregates in cement-based mortars to enhance thermal insulation and reduce environmental impact. The research addresses the pressing global challenge of managing end-of-life tires (ELTs), which are non-biodegradable and contribute significantly to waste management issues. By incorporating crumb rubber from recycled tires into mortars, this study investigates the feasibility of creating lightweight, thermally insulating mortars suitable for building repair and rehabilitation. The primary objective is to develop mortars that minimize structural load, decrease energy consumption in buildings, and promote the recycling of ELTs as a valuable resource. The study focuses on evaluating how varying crumb rubber content affects key properties such as workability, thermal conductivity, compressive strength, and fracture energy. Experimental tests were conducted to assess these properties, with the results indicating that mortars with up to 50% crumb rubber content exhibit improved thermal insulation and meet industry standards for non-structural repair applications. The methodology involved creating eight different mortar mixtures with varying proportions of crumb rubber particles (ranging from 0% to 100%). Each mixture was tested for physical and mechanical properties, including density, workability, air content, setting time, thermal conductivity, and strength. The experimental results showed that as the crumb rubber content increased, the thermal conductivity of the mortars decreased, indicating enhanced insulation properties. However, higher crumb rubber content led to reduced mechanical strength, highlighting the need for a balanced approach in material design. Key findings reveal that the air content of early-age mortar paste increases linearly with the crumb rubber replacement ratio, impacting the hardened behavior by concentrating stresses or facilitating the infiltration of damaging elements. The study also establishes relationships between mortar properties and crumb rubber content, contributing to the development of sustainable construction materials. The environmental benefits of recycling ELTs are emphasized, as this practice reduces the reliance on natural sand, a resource that is the second most consumed globally after water. This study underscores the viability of using crumb rubber from recycled tires in mortars for repair and rehabilitation purposes. The developed mortars, particularly those with 25% to 50% crumb rubber content, show promise as non-structural repair products, offering improved thermal insulation and reduced environmental impact. The aim of the article was to test new types of rubber-containing particleboards created from waste materials, which positively contributes to environmental protection, saving primary resources and reducing production costs. This article focuses on the study of three-layer particleboards made from wood particles (spruce non-treated beams) and waste rubber granulates (tires, mixture of seals and carpets, internal flammable cables, external non-flammable cables). Urea–formaldehyde glue, melamine–formaldehyde glue, paraffin emulsion, and ammonium nitrate were used as a binders and excipients in the manufacturing of particleboards. In the core layer of each particleboard, 10% of the weight was made up of rubber granulate. Physical properties (density, water absorption, thickness swelling) and mechanical properties (internal bonding strength, modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity, screw driving torque) were assessed from this perspective using current EN technical standards. According to the findings, the average densities of all particleboards were comparable to each other in a range from 0.692 to 0.704 g·cm−3. The lowest average water absorption and thickness swelling reached particleboards containing 10% of waste internal flammable cables, namely 32.79% for water absorption and 13.21% for thickness swelling. The highest average internal bonding strength reached particleboards without rubber filler and particleboards containing 10% of waste external non-flammable cables, namely 0.52 MPa for both types. The highest average modulus of rupture reached particleboards without rubber filler, namely 12.44 MPa. The highest average modulus of elasticity reached particleboards containing 10% of waste internal flammable cables, namely 2206.29 MPa, and the highest screw driving torque reached particleboards without rubber filler, namely 0.46 N·m for seating torque and 1.44 N·m for stripping torque. The results show that particleboards containing waste external non-flammable cables and particleboards containing waste internal flammable cables achieved comparable results to particleboards without rubber filler, which provides a good basis for a new way of utilizing this type of waste in the form of producing new wood–rubber composites. A demand to replace an easily combustible wood with wood–plastic–rubber composite with better thermal performance than wood is at its peak globally. Wood-based composite materials in the form of wood–polymer composite (WPC) have emerged as new materials that can replace wood to produce wood products for various use. The use of recycled polymers as biodegradable polymer blended with fiber particles, waste tire powder, and other substances to manufacture new products known as wood–rubber–plastics composite (WRPC) for building construction and other different applications, has piqued the interest of numerous researchers. High flammability and weak combustibility parameters are a setback for many wood-based composites because of the flammability of these composites. Fabricated WRPC based on non-toxic fire retardants and other additives used to modify the flame-resistant quality of these composites, the fabrication techniques, and mechanical characteristics are herein reviewed. It is hoped that better composite in the form of WRPC can be used as building materials for informal and formal dwellings. Full article

Used tires (UTs) are a global problem, especially in developing countries due to inadequate management systems. During retreading, when the worn tread is replaced, waste is generated in the form of tire fibers (TFs) and particles, which can be reused as raw materials to produce economically and environmentally low-cost prefabricated elements. Using TFs as a lightweight aggregate in nonstructural geopolymer-based elements is a sustainable valorization option. This study aims to valorize used tires by incorporating them as TFs into lightweight geopolymer mixes and analyzing their physico-mechanical, thermal, and thermography properties for building and civil engineering applications. The geopolymer is produced from a precursor (spent catalyst residue from catalytic cracking, FCC) and an alkaline activator composed of rice husk ash (RHA), sodium hydroxide, and water. The control sample’s (mortar with siliceous sand, CTRLSIL) compressive strength came close to 50 MPa, while the TF mixes ranged from 32 to 3 MPa, which meet the masonry standards. The thermal conductivity and thermography analyses showed that increasing the TF content reduced the heat transmission and achieved a similar performance to expanded-clay concrete and better performance than for conventional concrete. The use of rubber crumbs provides a viable solution for alleviating the disposal problem of waste tires. In this study, rubberized sulfur concrete (RSC) was researched to investigate the optimal mixture proportion and to improve the mixing process in terms of compressive strength and durability performance. For the mixture of the RSC, sand, rubber particles, and micro-filler were adopted as aggregates and sulfur was used for the binding material. Moreover, two mixing processes were applied: the dry mixing process and the wet mixing process. Based on the test results, the increment of rubber particles in the mixture led to a decrease in the compressive strength for both the dry and wet mixing processes. To minimize the voids between the sand and rubber particles, the micro-filler was used at 5% of the total volume. The amount of sulfur varied slightly depending on the mixing process: 30% sulfur for the dry mixing process and 34% sulfur for the wet mixing process, respectively. Consequently, compared to the dry mixing process, the wet mixing process increased the bonding force between sulfur and rubber powder due to the simultaneous heating and combining. In toughness, the wet mixing process demonstrates a 40% higher energy absorption capability compared to the dry mixing process. For the durability performance of the RSC, the mixture with 20% rubber particles produced using the wet mixing process exhibited better corrosion and freeze–thaw resistance. Full article

The extensive global use of rubber results in significant microplastic pollution from the release of tire wear particles and microplastic leachate, impacting the environment, human health, and ecosystems. Waste tires are normally recycled and used for the production of new products, such as rubber tiles. The presented study aims to show the possibility of further decrease in the negative environmental impact of materials based on recycled rubber. This paper presents the modification of rubber tiles with a titanium dioxide (TiO2) coating, focusing on surface integrity, rubber particle wear release, and the consequent environmental impact of leachate release. Both reference and modified rubber tiles were subjected to artificial accelerated aging in a solar simulator for 4, 6, and 8 weeks, followed by an abrasion test. The carbonyl index was calculated from FTIR characterization after each time frame to indicate the degradation of organic compounds and chemical changes caused by UV exposure. A 24 h leaching test with a liquid-to-sample ratio of 1:20 was performed on both rubber tile samples prior to and after 8 weeks of aging along with the aged wear particles for the purpose of the non-target screening of released organic leachate by LC/MS QTOF. The results of carbonyl indices showed that the TiO2 coating contributes to the stabilization of polymer degradation and, to a certain extent, reduces the leaching of organic compounds, such as phthalates. However, the increased wear and release of rubber particles and the subsequent degradation of organic leachates require further in-depth research. Full article

Novel Design of Eco-Friendly High-Performance Thermoplastic Elastomer Based on Polyurethane and Ground Tire Rubber toward Upcycling of Waste Tires

Waste rubber tires are an area of global concern in relation to reducing the consumption of petrochemical products and environmental pollution. Herein, eco-friendly high-performance thermoplastic polyurethane (PU) elastomers were successfully in-situ synthesized through the incorporation of ground tire rubber (GTR). The excellent wet-skid resistance of PU/GTR elastomer was achieved by using mixed polycaprolactone polyols with Mn = 1000 g/mol (PCL-1K) and PCL-2K as soft segments. More importantly, an efficient solution to balance the contradiction between dynamic heat build-up and wet-skid resistance in PU/GTR elastomers was that low heat build-up was realized through the limited friction between PU molecular chains, which was achieved with the help of the network structure formed from GTR particles uniformly distributed in the PU matrix. Impressively, the tanδ at 60 °C and the DIN abrasion volume (Δrel) of the optimal PU/GTR elastomer with 59.5% of PCL-1K and 5.0% of GTR were 0.03 and 38.5 mm3, respectively, which are significantly lower than the 0.12 and 158.32 mm3 for pure PU elastomer, indicating that the PU/GTR elastomer possesses extremely low rolling resistance and excellent wear resistance. Meanwhile, the tanδ at 0 °C of the above-mentioned PU/GTR elastomer was 0.92, which is higher than the 0.80 of pure PU elastomer, evidencing the high wet-skid resistance. To some extent, the as-prepared PU/GTR elastomer has effectively solved the “magic triangle” problem in the tire industry.
