This paper proposes a novel suspended seismic structure system called Base-suspended Pendulum Isolation (BSPI) structure. The BSPI structure can isolate seismic action and reduce structural seismic response by hanging the structure with hanger rods set at the base. The viscous dampers are installed in the isolation layer to dissipate earthquake energy and control the displacement. Firstly, the configuration of suspension isolation layer and mechanical model of the BSPI structure are described. Then, an equivalent scaled BSPI structure physical model was tested on the shaking table. The test results demonstrate that the BSPI structure has a good isolation effect under earthquakes, and the viscous dampers had an obvious control effect on the structure’s displacement and acceleration response. Finally, numerical simulation of the tests was carried out. The accuracy of the numerical models are confirmed by the good agreement between the simulation and test results. The numerical models for the BSPI structure and conventional reinforced concrete (RC) frame structure are built and analyzed using the commercial software ABAQUS. Research results indicate that the lateral stiffness of the BSPI structure is reduced greatly by installing the suspension layer, and the acceleration response of BSPI structure is significantly reduced under rare earthquakes, which is only 1/2 of that of the RC frame. The inter-story displacement of the BSPI structure is less than 1/100, which meets the seismic fortification goal and is reduced to 50% of that of the BSPI structure without damper under rare earthquakes. This study presents a detailed experimental comparison of the rotordynamic and thermal performance of automotive turbochargers supported by two distinct hydrodynamic bearing configurations: fully floating ring bearings (FFRBs) and semi-floating ring bearings (SFRBs). While both designs are widely used in commercial turbochargers, they exhibit significantly different dynamic behaviors due to differences in ring motion and fluid film interaction. A cold air-driven test rig was employed to assess vibration and temperature characteristics across a range of controlled lubricant conditions. The test matrix included oil supply pressures from 2 bar (g) to 4 bar (g) and temperatures between 30 °C and 70 °C. Rotor speeds reached up to 200 krpm (thousands of revolutions per minute), and data were collected using a high-speed data acquisition system, triaxial accelerometers, and infrared (IR) thermal imaging. Rotor vibration was characterized through waterfall and Bode plots, while jump speeds and thermal profiles were analyzed to evaluate the onset and severity of instability. The results demonstrate that the FFRB configuration is highly sensitive to oil supply parameters, exhibiting strong subsynchronous instabilities and hysteresis during acceleration–deceleration cycles. In contrast, the SFRB configuration consistently provided superior vibrational stability and reduced sensitivity to lubricant conditions. Changes in lubricant supply conditions induced a jump speed variation in floating ring bearing (FRB) turbochargers that was approximately 3.47 times larger than that experienced by semi-floating ring bearing (SFRB) turbochargers. Furthermore, IR images and oil outlet temperature data confirm that the FFRB system experiences greater heat generation and thermal gradients, consistent with higher energy dissipation through viscous shear. This study provides a comprehensive assessment of both bearing types under realistic high-speed conditions and highlights the advantages of the SFRB configuration in improving turbocharger reliability, thermal performance, and noise suppression. The findings support the application of SFRBs in high-performance automotive systems where mechanical stability and reduced frictional losses are critical. Full article

A lie point symmetry analysis of flow and heat transfer under the influence of an external magnetic field and viscous dissipation was previously conducted using a couple of lie point symmetries of the model. In this article, we construct a one-dimensional optimal system for the flow model to extend the previous analysis. This optimal system reveals all the solvable classes of the flow model by deducing similarity transformations, reducing flow equations, and solving the obtained equations analytically. To characterize a phenomenological model of a mechanical oscillator, it is important to know the properties of the envelope of the three main physical motion variables: deviation from equilibrium, velocity, and acceleration. Experimental data show that friction forces restrict the shape of these functions. A linear, exponential, or more abrupt decay can be observed depending on the different physical systems and conditions. This paper aimed to contribute to clarifying the role that some types of friction forces play in these shapes. Three types of friction—constant sliding friction, pressure drag proportional to the square of velocity, and friction drag proportional to velocity—were considered to characterize the line connecting the maxima and minima of displacement for a generic mechanical harmonic oscillator. The ordinary differential equation (ODE), describing the harmonic oscillator simultaneously containing the three types of dissipative forces (constant, viscous, and quadratic), was numerically solved to obtain energy dissipation, and the extrema of both displacement and velocity. The differential equation ruling the behavior of the amplitude, as a function of the friction force coefficients, was obtained from energy considerations. Solving this equation, we obtained analytical functions, parametrized by the force coefficients that describe the oscillator tail. A comparison between these functions and the predicted oscillator ODE extrema was made, and the results were in agreement for all the situations tested. Information from the velocity extrema and nulls was enough to obtain a second function that rules completely the ODE solution. The correlations obtained allow for the reverse operation: from the identified extremum data, it was possible to identify univocally the three friction coefficients fitting used in the model. Motion equations were solved, and some physical properties, namely energy conservation and work of friction forces, were revisited. Full article

Ductile structures have demonstrated the ability to withstand increased seismic intensity levels. Additionally, these structures can be restored to their operational state promptly following the replacement of damaged components post-earthquake. This capability has been a subject of considerable interest and focus in recent years. The study presented in this paper introduces an innovative beam-column connection that incorporates V-shaped steel as the replaceable energy-dissipating component. It delineates the structural configuration and design principles of this joint. Furthermore, the paper conducts a detailed analysis of the joint’s failure mode, stress distribution, and strain patterns using ABAQUS 2022 finite element software, thereby elucidating the failure mechanisms, load transfer pathways, and energy dissipation characteristics of the joint. In addition, the study investigates the impact of critical design parameters, including the strength, thickness, and weakening dimensions of the dog-bone energy-dissipating section, as well as the strength and thickness of the V-shaped plate, on the seismic behavior of the beam-column joint. The outcomes demonstrate that the incorporation of V-shaped steel with a configurable replaceable energy-dissipating component into the traditional dog-bone replaceable joint significantly improves the out-of-plane stability. Concurrently, the V-shaped steel undergoes a process of gradual flattening under load, which allows for a larger degree of deformation. In conclusion, the innovative joint design exhibits superior ductility and load-bearing capacity when contrasted with the conventional replaceable dog-bone energy-dissipating section joint. The joint’s equivalent viscous damping coefficient, ranging between 0.252 and 0.331, demonstrates its robust energy dissipation properties. The parametric analysis results indicate that the LY160 and Q235 steel grades are recommended for the dog-bone connector and V-shaped steel connector, respectively. The optimal thickness ranges are 6–10 mm for the dog-bone connector and 2–4 mm for the V-shaped steel connector, while the weakened dimension should preferably be selected within 15–20 mm. Control of buoyancy-assisted convective flow and the associated thermal behavior of nanofluids in finite-sized conduits has become a great challenge for the design of many types of thermal equipment, particularly for heat exchangers. This investigation discusses the numerical simulation of the buoyancy-driven convection (BDC) of a nanofluid (NF) in a differently heated cylindrical annular domain with an interior cylinder attached with a thin baffle. The annular region is filled with non-Darcy porous material saturated-nanofluid and both NF and the porous structure are in local thermal equilibrium (LTE). Higher thermal conditions are imposed along the interior cylinder as well as the baffle, while the exterior cylinder is maintained with lower or cold thermal conditions. The Darcy–Brinkman–Forchheimer model, which accounts for inertial, viscous, and non-linear drag forces was adopted to model the momentum equations. An implicit finite difference methodology by considering time-splitting methods for transient equations and relaxation-based techniques is chosen for the steady-state model equations. The impacts of various pertinent parameters, such as the Rayleigh and Darcy numbers, baffle dimensions, like length and position, on flow, thermal distributions, as well as thermal dissipation rates are systematically estimated through accurate numerical predictions. It was found that the baffle dimensions are very crucial parameters to effectively control the flow and associated thermal dissipation rates in the domain. In addition, machine learning techniques were adopted for the chosen analysis and an appropriate model developed to predict the outcome accurately among the different models considered. Full article

Improving the reliability and durability of internal combustion engines in marine vessels is a complex issue. The vibrations generated in these engines significantly affect their proper operation. One of the current research challenges is identifying effective methods to reduce, among other things, torsional vibrations generated within the crank–piston system. To mitigate these vibrations, viscous dampers are commonly used. The selection of a viscous damper for a high-power multi-cylinder engine, such as those in marine power plants, requires a thorough understanding of the thermo-hydrodynamic properties of oil films formed in the spaces between the damper housing and the inertial mass. The description of the phenomena involved is complicated by the variable positioning of the inertial mass center relative to the housing during operation. Most previous studies assume a concentric alignment between these components. The main novelty of this work lies in highlighting the combined effect of the eccentric motion of the inertial ring on both hydrodynamic resistance and thermal characteristics, which has not been fully addressed in existing studies. This article defines the oil flow resistance coefficients and develops static characteristics of the dampers. Additionally, it evaluates the impact of the size of the frontal and cylindrical surfaces of the damper on its heat dissipation capacity. The presented characteristics can be utilized to assess the performance parameters of this type of damper. Full article

This work presents a novel fully automated computational framework for optimizing profile extrusion dies, aiming to achieve balanced flow at the die flow channel outlet while minimizing total pressure drop. The framework integrates non-isothermal, non-Newtonian flow modeling in OpenFOAM with a geometry parameterization routine in FreeCAD and a Bayesian optimization algorithm from Scikit-Optimize. A custom solver was developed to account for temperature-dependent viscosity using the Bird–Carreau–Arrhenius model, incorporating viscous dissipation and a novel boundary condition to replicate the thermal regulation used in the experimental process. For optimization, the die flow channel outlet cross-section is discretized into elemental sections, enabling localized flow analysis and establishing a convergence criterion based on the total objective function value. A case study on a tire tread die demonstrates the framework’s ability to iteratively refine internal geometry by adjusting key design parameters, resulting in significant improvements in outlet velocity uniformity and reduced pressure drop. Within the searching space, the results showed an optimal objective function of 0.2001 for the best configuration, compared to 0.7333 for the worst configuration, representing an enhancement of 72.7%. The results validate the effectiveness of the proposed framework in navigating complex design spaces with minimal manual input, offering a robust and generalizable approach to extrusion die optimization. This methodology enhances process efficiency, reduces development time, and improves final product quality, particularly for complex and asymmetric die geometries commonly found in the automotive and tire manufacturing industries. To investigate the influence of different connection configurations of viscous dampers on seismic mitigation performance, this study conducts a numerical simulation analysis of a 10-story inpatient building in Bazhou People’s Hospital, comparing the energy dissipation efficacy of viscous dampers under three connection types: diagonal bracing, chevron bracing, and wall-mounted connections. The results demonstrate that both chevron and wall-mounted configurations exhibit superior seismic mitigation performance compared to diagonal bracing. Specifically, chevron bracing is more suitable for mid- to high-rise structures, while wall-mounted connections achieve marginally better performance in low-rise buildings. However, the latter’s efficacy diminishes in mid- to high-rise structures due to the influence of wall self-weight. This study provides practical insights for optimizing the arrangement and application of viscous dampers in engineering projects. Full article

Steel slag aggregate (SSA), as a high-performance and sustainable material, has demonstrated significant potential in enhancing the mechanical properties of concrete and improving the bond behavior between reinforcement and the concrete matrix, thereby contributing to the seismic resilience of steel slag concrete columns (SSCCs). Nevertheless, the underlying mechanism through which SSA influences the seismic performance of SSCCs remains insufficiently understood, and current analytical models fail to accurately capture the effects of bond strength on structural behavior. In this study, a comprehensive experimental program comprising central pull-out tests and quasi-static cyclic loading tests was conducted to investigate the influence of SSA on bond strength and the seismic response of SSCCs. Key seismic performance indicators, including the hysteresis curve, equivalent viscous damping ratio, and ductility coefficient, were evaluated. The role of bond strength in governing energy dissipation and ductility characteristics was elucidated in detail. The results indicate that bond strength significantly affects the seismic performance of SSCC components. At an SSA replacement ratio of 40%, the specimens show optimal performance: energy dissipation capacity increases by 11.3%, bond–slip deformation in the plastic hinge region decreases by 10%, and flexural deformation capacity improves by 9% compared to the control group. However, when the SSA replacement exceeds 60%, the performance metrics are similar to those of ordinary concrete, showing no significant advantages. Based on the experimental findings, a modified bond–slip constitutive model for the steel slag concrete–reinforcement interface is proposed. Furthermore, a finite element model incorporating bond–slip effects is developed, and its numerical predictions exhibit strong agreement with the experimental results, effectively capturing the lateral load-carrying capacity and stiffness degradation behavior of SSCCs. In this paper, we revisit the extension of the classical non-standard cosmological model in which dissipative processes are considered through a bulk viscous term in the new field ϕ, which interacts with the radiation component during the early universe. Specifically, we consider an interaction term of the form Γϕρϕ, where Γϕ represents the decay rate of the field and ρϕ denotes its energy density and a bulk viscosity described by ξ=ξ0ρϕ1/2, within the framework of Eckart’s theory. This extended non-standard cosmology is employed to explore the parameter space for the production of Feebly Interacting Massive Particles (FIMPs) as Dark Matter candidates, assuming a constant thermal averaged Dark Matter production cross-section (σv), as well as a preliminary analysis of the non-constant case. In particular, for certain combinations of the model and Dark Matter parameters, namely (Tend,κ) and (mχ,σv), where Tend corresponds to the temperature at which ϕ decays, κ is the ratio between the initial energy density of ϕ and radiation, and mχ is the Dark Matter mass, we identify extensive new parameter regions where Dark Matter can be successfully established while reproducing the currently observed relic density, in contrast to the predictions of ΛCDM and classical non-standard cosmological scenarios. The prefabricated concrete channel, constructed by integrating factory-based prefabrication with on-site assembly, offers enhanced quality, reduced construction time, and minimized environmental impact. To promote its application in water conservancy projects, an innovative concrete joint combining semi-grouting sleeves and shear-resistant steel plates was proposed. Its seismic performance was assessed through a 1:3 scale low-cycle reversed loading test, focusing on failure mode, hysteretic behavior, skeleton curves, stiffness degradation, ductility, and energy dissipation. Results show that the joint primarily exhibits bending–shear failure, with cracks initiating at the sidewall–base slab interface. Also, the sidewall and base slab are interconnected through semi-grouting sleeves, while the concrete bonding is achieved via grouting and surface chiseling at the joint interface. The results indicated that the innovative concrete joint connection exhibits satisfied seismic performance. The shear-resistant steel plate significantly improves shear strength and enhances water sealing. Compared with cast-in-place specimens, the prefabricated joint shows a 16.04% lower equivalent viscous damping coefficient during failure due to reinforcement slippage, while achieving 16.34% greater cumulative energy dissipation and 52.00% higher ductility. These findings provide theoretical and experimental support for the broader adoption of prefabricated channels in water conservancy engineering. Full article

A tapered roller bearing (TRB) is a specialized type of bearing with a high load-to-volume ratio, designed to support both radial and axial loads. Lubrication plays a crucial role in TRB operation by reducing friction and dissipating heat generated during rotation. However, it can also negatively impact TRB performance due to the viscous and inertial effects of the lubricant. Extensive research has been conducted to examine the role of lubrication in TRB performance. Lubrication primarily influences the frictional characteristics, thermal behavior, hydraulic losses, dynamic stability, and contact mechanics of TRBs. This paper aims to collect and classify the scientific literature on TRB lubrication based on these key aspects. Specifically, it explores the scope of research on the use of Newtonian and non-Newtonian lubricants in TRBs. Furthermore, this study analyzes research based on TRB size and type, considering both oil and grease as lubricants. The findings indicate that both numerical and experimental studies have been conducted to investigate Newtonian and non-Newtonian lubricants across various TRB sizes and types. However, the results highlight that limited research has focused on non-Newtonian lubricants in TRBs with an Outer Diameter (OD) exceeding 300 mm, i.e., those typically used in wind turbines, industrial gearboxes, and railways. The Effect of Viscosity on the Temperature of Ae Star Disks

This study explores the impact of viscous heating on decretion disks around Classical Ae (CAe) stars, with a focus on modeling the disk’s thermal structure. While photoionization is the dominant heating mechanism, viscous dissipation can play an important role in shaping the disk temperature, particularly for cooler CAe subtypes. Our models incorporate viscosity-driven heating and predict that shear heating has a negligible effect for early A-type stars (A0–A1), but it becomes increasingly significant for later spectral types, especially as the viscosity parameter (α) increases. This heating also influences the strength of Hα emission. Furthermore, our models predict a sharp decline in the number of emission-line stars beyond spectral type A2, a trend observed in CAe populations. However, for sufficiently high α values (≥0.3), a higher fraction of emission-line objects is expected even among later subtypes, such as A5, despite the lack of well-characterized CAe stars observed beyond the spectral type A4. To investigate the seismic performance of steel tube-reinforced concrete (ST-RC) columns after fire on one side, this study employs numerical simulation and theoretical analysis methods. A numerical analysis model of ST-RC columns post-fire is established using ABAQUS to simulate and analyze their seismic performance under cyclic loading. The characteristics of the hysteresis curves of ST-RC columns after fire on one side under cyclic loading are described in detail. Comparisons are made between the skeleton curves, ductility, stiffness degradation, and energy dissipation capacity of ST-RC columns under three conditions: unexposed to fire, exposed to fire on all sides, and exposed to fire on one side. Finally, multiple influencing factors, including heating time, slenderness ratio, section size, core area ratio, external concrete strength, reinforcement ratio, and load ratio, are selected for parametric analysis of the ductility coefficient, stiffness, and viscous damping coefficient. Mathematical formulas for the ductility coefficient, stiffness, and viscous damping coefficient of ST-RC columns after fire on one side under cyclic loading are derived through regression analysis. The results show that the seismic performance of ST-RC columns is attenuated after fire on one side, and the ductility and initial stiffness of ST-RC columns decreases by 5.62% and 24.69%, respectively, compared with those without fire. The energy dissipation capacity of the ST-RC column increases significantly when it enters the plastic deformation stage under the action of reciprocating load. Full article
