Virtual tours are increasingly used in education, particularly when access to real environments is limited. This study examined how display mode and representation format affect subjective user experience in an educational virtual tour of a hospital operating room. A within-subject 2 × 2 design compared two representation formats (360° photographs vs. 3D models) and two display modes (desktop PC vs. immersive virtual reality using Meta Quest 2). Eighty-four university students completed the four visualization conditions and evaluated each experience using an adapted version of the QUXiVE questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and internal consistency indices were calculated, and each questionnaire dimension was analyzed using a two-way repeated-measures ANOVA with display mode and representation format as within-subject factors. A significant main effect of display mode was found for presence, engagement, immersion, flow, emotion, judgment, physical consequences, and perceived educational usefulness (all p < 0.001), but not for usability (p = 0.273). A significant main effect of representation format was observed for presence (p = 0.003), emotion (p = 0.018), and perceived educational usefulness (p = 0.015), whereas no significant interaction effects were found. These findings indicate that immersive VR had the strongest and most consistent effect on subjective user experience across both 360° and 3D virtual tours, although it was also associated with higher physical-consequence scores. By contrast, the effect of representation format was more limited. Overall, both approaches appear to be complementary educational resources, depending on pedagogical goals, available infrastructure, and desired levels of interactivity. Full article

Online guided tours have become an essential form of non-contact tourism, yet the experiential attributes shaping participants’ digital tour experiences remain underexplored. This study aims to identify the core experiential dimensions of online guided tours by analyzing user-generated review data and interpreting the findings through the experience economy framework. A dataset of 1506 participant reviews was collected from major online guided tour platforms and analyzed using text mining techniques, including TF-IDF and Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA). The results reveal the following seven experiential attributes: entertainment, education, esthetics, escapism, presence, interactivity, and digital environment. These findings indicate that online guided tours extend beyond traditional 4E experience dimensions, incorporating digitally mediated elements such as real-time communication and platform-driven immersion. The proposed “4E + 3D Model” captures the hybrid nature of digital tourism experiences, combining classic experiential factors with technology-enabled components. This study contributes to tourism experience research by empirically validating an expanded experiential structure suitable for digital contexts. It also demonstrates the value of user-generated review analysis for deriving authentic experiential insights. The results provide practical implications for enhancing online guided tour design, emphasizing real-time interactivity, digital esthetics, and system stability to improve participant experiences in virtual tourism settings. This paper examines the role of digital technologies in advancing archeological research, using two complex, stratified case studies—the Villa Reale of Haghia Triada in Crete and the rock-cut churches of Pantalica in Sicily—as reference points. Both sites, despite their geographical and chronological differences, present comparable challenges: fragmented evidence, incomplete documentation, and the need for multi-scalar interpretation. By integrating photogrammetry, LiDAR scanning, and other 3D acquisition techniques with 3D modeling approaches, this paper explores how digital workflows can both preserve and reinterpret fragile archeological contexts. The aim of this research is to critically assess the methodological potential and epistemological implications of these tools, emphasizing transparency, reproducibility, and their communicative value for scholarly communities and wider audiences. This study curates and structures knowledge concerning Buddhist learning resources for tourism, presenting it through a virtual tour of Wat Phra Pathom Chedi Ratchaworamahawihan in Nakhon Pathom Province. Employing a mixed-methods approach that integrates both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, the research first establishes a structured knowledge base. This involves developing a comprehensive metadata schema for cataloging the temple’s diverse resources, including both sacred sites and artifacts, to enhance their searchability and accessibility. Subsequently, this knowledge is rendered into a virtual tour, which serves as an exemplary model of a Buddhist digital learning resource for tourism. The findings reveal the extensive diversity of resources within the temple. The developed virtual tour platform allows users an immersive exploration of the site via 360-degree panoramic views. This research presents significant implications for relevant agencies, offering a scalable model for the digital dissemination of cultural heritage. It is anticipated that this initiative will expand global access to and appreciation of the temple’s cultural value, thereby fostering international interest in visitation. Such engagement is poised to stimulate the local economy and bolster Thailand’s image as a premier cultural tourism destination. Full article

This study presents the on-site public evaluation of Notre-Dame Whispers, a geolocated audio-guided tour that explores the sonic history of the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris. The experience combines binaural reproduction, embodied storytelling, and historically informed soundscapes to immerse visitors in the cathedral’s past auditory environments. Drawing on virtually recreated acoustics, it reconstructs key components of Notre-Dame’s sound heritage, including the medieval construction site, early polyphonic chant, and the contemporary urban soundscape. An on-site evaluation was conducted to assess visitor engagement, usability, and the perceived authenticity of the reconstructed soundscapes. A mixed-methods approach integrated questionnaire responses, semi-structured interviews, and anonymized user analytics collected through the mobile application. Results indicate a high level of immersion, with participants particularly valuing the spatialised audio design and narrative depth. However, challenges were identified regarding GPS-based triggering reliability and the difficulty of situational interpretation in complex spatial environments. These findings offer insights into public reception of immersive heritage audio experiences and inform future developments in digital cultural mediation. Full article

In educational smart learning contexts, 360° virtual tours deliver authentic, cross-device experiences, but uptake is limited by subscription-based authoring tools and free options that restrict in-tour rich media embedding. To address this, we present a library of eight open-source HTML5 widgets (image gallery, PDF viewer, quiz, 3D model viewer, webpage viewer, audio player, YouTube viewer, and image comparison) that can be embedded directly in the viewer as HTML pop-ups (e.g., CloudPano) or run standalone, with dual packaging (single self-contained HTML or server-hosted assets referenced by URL). Evaluation is limited to technical efficiency (resource size, load performance, and cross-device/browser compatibility), with pedagogical outcomes and learner performance beyond the scope. The architecture minimizes dependencies and enables reuse in virtual classrooms via iframes. We provide a unified web interface and a repository to promote adoption, auditability, and community contributions. The results show that standalone widgets are between 20 and 100 times smaller than H5P equivalents produced with Lumi Education and exhibit shorter measured load times (0.1–0.5 ms). Seamless integration is demonstrated for CloudPano and Moodle. By lowering costs, simplifying deployment, and broadening in-tour media capabilities, the proposed widgets offer a pragmatic pathway to enrich educational 360° tours. Full article

Although emerging technologies are increasingly adopted in teaching and learning, their potential to enhance educational administration remains underexplored. In particular, few studies examine how conversational agents, virtual reality (VR), and robotic process automation (RPA) can jointly streamline administrative workflows in multilingual and multicultural university environments. This study addresses this gap by presenting an integrated solution deployed on the website of an engineering faculty where programs are delivered in foreign languages. The proposed system combines a multilingual chatbot, a VR-based administrative guide and virtual tour, and RPA modules supporting certificate generation, password resets, and exam scheduling. Through an A/B usability test, usage analytics, and qualitative feedback, we evaluate the effectiveness of these technologies in improving access to information, reducing response time, and lowering administrative workload. Results show that this triad significantly enhances efficiency and student experience, particularly for international students requiring continuous support. The paper contributes a replicable model for leveraging emerging technologies in educational administration and offers insights for institutions seeking scalable and student-centered digital transformation. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Virtual Reality (VR) are increasingly integrated into education, yet their combined psychological effects remain underexplored. This paper investigates the potential benefits and risks of AI-powered learning assistants within immersive VR environments. The study builds on insights from a previous pilot involving a virtual tour guide for Athens and proposes a case study with 52 high school students. In groups of three, students would use Oculus headsets with an AI assistant (pre-programmed and AI-generated modes), explore content for a week, and complete questionnaires on usability, trust, and psychological impact. The analysis is expected to support a balance of positive outcomes including greater engagement, motivation and autonomy but also negative ones such as over-reliance, diminished critical thinking, and social isolation. The paper also identifies key psychological dynamics, including the critical role of social influence and teacher-led adoption, and the nuanced nature of student trust in AI-generated information. Ethical implications, such as data privacy and the digital divide, are also discussed. The study concludes by proposing that AI-VR can enrich learning, especially in cultural contexts, but requires safeguards for trust, ethics, and accessibility, with further research on long-term effects, psychological impact and cross-cultural and linguistic nuances. Background/Objectives: Older patients are more susceptible to the process of understanding and retrieving information. To provide adequate preoperative information, reduce their vulnerability and anxiety, and thereby facilitate pre-, intra-, and postoperative care, the adoption of new information technologies is essential. This study aimed to explore elderly patients’ experiences and perceptions of a Virtual Reality (VR)-based preoperative informational tool designed for individuals scheduled to undergo TKA. Method: A qualitative content analysis was conducted from February to June 2025 based on 14 semi-structured post-discharge interviews. Participants were recruited as part of a randomized controlled trial. Results: One main theme and two categories describe patients’ experiences of using VR information, which is perceived as a valuable supplement to standard preoperative information. The category “Using VR as an information tool” includes how patients experienced the immersive environment, how it affected them, and their views on using the VR glasses. The category “Apply the information provided” described how patients evaluated and applied the VR content in relation to their expectations and the actual surgical experience. Conclusions: Immersive virtual reality (VR) shows promise as a preoperative information tool, improving patients’ understanding of the perioperative process and supporting engagement in their own care. Its effectiveness depends on reliable technical performance and adaptation to individual needs. VR should complement, not replace, communication with healthcare professionals. Further research is needed to identify optimal timing for VR delivery and its impact on preoperative anxiety and patient experience. Full article

Artificial intelligence (AI) is profoundly transforming heritage tourism through the incorporation of technological solutions that reconfigure the ways in which cultural heritage is conserved, interpreted, and experienced. This article presents a critical and systematic review of current AI applications in this field, with a special focus on their impact on destination management, the personalization of tourist experiences, universal accessibility, and the preservation of both tangible and intangible assets. Based on an analysis of the scientific literature and international use cases, key technologies such as machine learning, computer vision, generative models, and recommendation systems are identified. These tools enable everything from the virtual reconstruction of historical sites to the development of intelligent cultural assistants and adaptive tours, improving the visitor experience and promoting inclusion. This study also examines the main ethical, technical, and epistemological challenges associated with this transformation, including algorithmic surveillance, data protection, interoperability between platforms, the digital divide, and the reconfiguration of heritage knowledge production processes. In conclusion, this study argues that AI, when implemented in accordance with principles of responsibility, sustainability, and cultural sensitivity, can serve as a strategic instrument for ensuring the accessibility, representativeness, and social relevance of cultural heritage in the digital age. However, its effective integration necessitates the development of sector-specific ethical frameworks, inclusive governance models, and sustainable technological implementation strategies that promote equity, community participation, and long-term viability. Furthermore, this article highlights the need for empirical research to assess the actual impact of these technologies and for the creation of indicators to evaluate their effectiveness, fairness, and contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals. Museum building information modeling is an emerging research field that harnesses the potential of digitization applied to both architecture and artworks. This present work aims to innovate the current practices by integrating virtual tours and semantic-aware models while also fostering the uses of the informed models beyond management or professional use. The methodology consists of a 3D informed model able to manage the collection catalog, leveraging the BIM paradigm. Subsequently, a VR desktop tool is developed based on panoramic images fully interoperable with data enrichment and all the informative layers. The results demonstrate the feasibility of a workflow for a multilayer platform for museums that balances computational issues and ensures correct representation of various levels of geometry and information. The assessment in a real-world scenario through a fully operative prototype of museum BIM to VR also allows us to outline perspectives for dissemination purposes. Full article

Climate change poses significant risks to both natural and urban systems, and fostering climate literacy among younger generations is increasingly recognized as a key component of resilience strategies. This paper presents the outcomes of a transnational climate education project involving high school students from Cinisello Balsamo (Italy) and Edremit (Turkey), developed under the EU-funded Town Twinning program. The project combined scientific seminars, experiential learning, and digital tools (including carbon footprint calculators and immersive virtual glacier tours) to enhance climate knowledge and civic engagement. Youth Climate Councils were established to co-develop local sustainability proposals and engage with municipal authorities. Quantitative tests and qualitative evaluations confirmed significant learning gains and high satisfaction among participants. A comparative analysis with international initiatives highlights the project’s unique integration of scientific rigor, participatory methods, and cross-border cooperation. The proposed model offers a replicable framework for embedding place-based climate education into urban governance and youth policy. Full article

The digitization of geological heritage is essential for geoconservation, research, and education, yet traditional 3D methods like photogrammetry struggle to accurately capture specimens with complex optical properties. This paper evaluates 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) as a high-fidelity alternative. This study presents a multi-scale comparative study, digitizing landscape-scale outcrops with UAVs, architectural-scale museum interiors with smartphones, and specimen-level minerals with complex lusters and transparency. The results demonstrate that 3DGS provides unprecedented realism, successfully capturing view-dependent phenomena such as the labradorescence of feldspar and the translucency of fluorite, which are poorly represented by photogrammetric textured meshes. Furthermore, the 3DGS workflow is significantly faster and eliminates the need for manual post-processing and texture painting. By enabling the creation of authentic digital twins and immersive virtual tours, 3DGS represents a transformative technology for the field. It offers powerful new avenues for enhancing public engagement and creating accessible, high-fidelity digital archives for geoeducation and geotourism. Full article

The rehabilitation of mining environments poses significant challenges due to the contamination risks associated with hazardous materials, such as arsenic and other chemical products. This research study presents the development of a Digital Twin for the Lavrion Technological and Cultural Park (LTCP), a former mining and metalworking site that is currently undergoing environmental restoration. The Digital Twin integrates advanced technologies, including real-time sensor monitoring, geophysical methods, and 3D modeling, to provide a comprehensive tool for assessing and managing the environmental conditions of the site. Key elements of the project include the monitoring of hazardous-waste storage, the evaluation of contaminated soils, and the assessment of the Park’s infrastructure, which includes both deteriorating buildings and successfully restored structures. Real-time sensor data are collected to track critical parameters such as conductivity, temperature, salinity, and levels of pollutants, enabling proactive environmental management and mitigation of potential risks. The integration of these technologies enables continuous monitoring, historical data analysis, and improved decision making in the ongoing efforts to preserve the site’s ecological integrity. This study demonstrates the potential of using Digital Twins as an innovative solution for the sustainable management and valorization of mining heritage sites, offering insights into both technological applications and environmental conservation practices. The rising prevalence of dementia has raised significant public concern globally. However, the level of understanding and assistance concerning people with dementia remains limited. This study investigates the impact of virtual reality (VR) on enhancing public awareness and empathy toward dementia. We developed a Virtual Dementia Tour (VDT) designed to simulate the cognitive and sensory impairments associated with dementia while incorporating interactive decision-making elements. A total of 80 adults aged 18 years or older, residing in Hong Kong and with no personal or close family history of dementia or caregiving experience, were recruited for the study. Quantitative data were analyzed using paired and independent samples t-tests to assess the changes in the Dementia Attitudes Scale (DAS) scores before and after the intervention. The results indicate that the baseline awareness and understanding of dementia were low in both groups. However, participants who experienced the VDT showed significantly greater improvements in knowledge and empathy compared to the control group. The findings suggest that VR interventions can effectively promote dementia awareness, reduce stigma, and contribute to the development of dementia-friendly societies. This study contributes to the growing body of evidence supporting the use of VR as an innovative tool for advancing social awareness and empathy in public health education. Full article
