The transportation sector is a major consumer of primary energy and is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Sustainable transportation requires identifying and quantifying factors influencing transport-related CO2 emissions. This research aims to establish an adaptable, precise, and transparent forecasting structure for transport CO2 emissions of the United States. For this reason, we proposed a multi-stage method that incorporates explainable Machine Learning (ML) and Feature Selection (FS), guaranteeing interpretability in comparison to conventional black-box models. Due to high multicollinearity among 24 initial variables, hierarchical feature clustering and multi-step FS were applied, resulting in five key predictors: Total Primary Energy Imports (TPEI), Total Fossil Fuels Consumed (FFT), Annual Vehicle Miles Traveled (AVMT), Air Passengers-Domestic and International (APDI), and Unemployment Rate (UR). Four ML methods—Support Vector Regression, eXtreme Gradient Boosting, ElasticNet, and Multilayer Perceptron—were employed, with ElasticNet outperforming the others with RMSE = 45.53, MAE = 30.6, and MAPE = 0.016. SHAP analysis revealed AVMT, FFT, and APDI as the top contributors to CO2 emissions. This framework aids policymakers in making informed decisions and setting precise investments. Full article

The increasing depletion of fossil fuels and their environmental impact have led to the development of fuel cell hybrid electric vehicles. By combining fuel cells with batteries, these vehicles offer greater efficiency and zero emissions. However, their energy management remains a challenge requiring advanced strategies. This paper presents a comparative study of two developed energy management strategies: a deterministic rule-based approach and a fuzzy logic approach. The proposed system consists of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) as the primary energy source and a lithium-ion battery as the secondary source. A comprehensive model of the hybrid powertrain is developed to evaluate energy distribution and system behaviour. The control system includes a model predictive control (MPC) method for fuel cell current regulation and a PI controller to maintain DC bus voltage stability. The proposed strategies are evaluated under standard driving cycles (UDDS and NEDC) using a simulation in MATLAB/Simulink. Key performance indicators such as fuel efficiency, hydrogen consumption, battery state-of-charge, and voltage stability are examined to assess the effectiveness of each approach. Simulation results demonstrate that the deterministic strategy offers a structured and computationally efficient solution, while the fuzzy logic approach provides greater adaptability to dynamic driving conditions, leading to improved overall energy efficiency. These findings highlight the critical role of advanced control strategies in improving FCHEV performance and offer valuable insights for future developments in hybrid-vehicle energy management. Understanding what people think about hydrogen energy and how this influences their acceptance of the associated technology is a critical area of research. The public’s willingness to adopt practical applications of hydrogen energy, such as hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles (HFCVs), is a key factor in their deployment. To analyse the direct and indirect effects of key attitudinal variables that could influence the intention to use HFCVs in Spain, an online questionnaire was administered to a representative sample of the Spanish population (N = 1000). A path analysis Structural Equation Model (SEM) was applied to determine the effect of different attitudinal variables. A high intention to adopt HFCVs in Spain was found (3.8 out of 5), assuming their wider availability in the future. The path analysis results indicated that general acceptance of hydrogen technology and perception of its benefits had the greatest effect on the public’s intention to adopt HFCVs. Regarding indirect effects, the role of trust in hydrogen technology was notable, having significant mediating effects not only through general acceptance of hydrogen energy and local acceptance of hydrogen refuelling stations (HRS), but also through positive and negative emotions and benefits perception. The findings will assist in focusing the future hydrogen communication strategies of both the government and the private (business) sector. Full article

Understanding vehicle emissions is essential for developing effective carbon reduction strategies in the transport sector. Conventional emission models often assume homogeneity and linearity, overlooking real-world asymmetries that arise from variations in vehicle design and powertrain configurations. This study explores how machine learning and explainable AI techniques can effectively capture both symmetric and asymmetric emission patterns across different vehicle types, thereby contributing to more sustainable transport planning. Addressing a key gap in the existing literature, the study poses the following question: how do structural and behavioral factors contribute to asymmetric emission responses in internal combustion engine vehicles compared to new energy vehicles? Utilizing a large-scale Spanish vehicle registration dataset, the analysis classifies vehicles by powertrain type and applies five supervised learning algorithms to predict CO2 emissions. SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAPs) are employed to identify nonlinear and threshold-based relationships between emissions and vehicle characteristics such as fuel consumption, weight, and height. Among the models tested, the Random Forest algorithm achieves the highest predictive accuracy. The findings reveal critical asymmetries in emission behavior, particularly among hybrid vehicles, which challenge the assumption of uniform policy applicability. This study provides both methodological innovation and practical insights for symmetry-aware emission modeling, offering support for more targeted eco-design and policy decisions that align with long-term sustainability goals. To further enhance the economic performance of fuel cell vehicles (FCVs), this study develops a model-adaptive model predictive control (MPC) strategy. This strategy leverages the dynamic relationship between proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) output characteristics and temperature to track its optimal operating temperature (OOT), addressing challenges of temperature control accuracy and high energy consumption in the PEMFC thermal management system (TMS). First, PEMFC and TMS models were developed and experimentally validated. Subsequently, the PEMFC power–temperature coupling curve was experimentally determined under multiple operating conditions to serve as the reference trajectory for TMS multi-objective optimization. For MPC controller design, the TMS model was linearized and discretized, yielding a predictive model adaptable to different load demands for stack temperature across the full operating range. A multi-constrained quadratic cost function was formulated, aiming to minimize the deviation of the PEMFC operating temperature from the OOT while accounting for TMS parasitic power consumption. Finally, simulations under Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Cycle (WLTC) conditions evaluated the OOT tracking performance of both PID and MPC control strategies, as well as their impact on stack efficiency and TMS energy consumption at different ambient temperatures. The results indicate that, compared to PID control, MPC reduces temperature tracking error by 33%, decreases fan and pump speed fluctuations by over 24%, and lowers TMS energy consumption by 10%. These improvements enhance PEMFC operational stability and improve FCV energy efficiency. Full article

This study proposes an intelligent patrol planning framework that leverages reinforcement learning, spatiotemporal crime forecasting, and simulated sensor telemetry to optimize autonomous vehicle (AV) navigation in urban environments. Crime incidents from Washington DC (2024–2025) and Seattle (2008–2024) are modeled as a dynamic spatiotemporal graph, capturing the evolving intensity and distribution of criminal activity across neighborhoods and time windows. The agent’s state space incorporates synthetic AV sensor inputs—including fuel level, visual anomaly detection, and threat signals—to reflect real-world operational constraints. We evaluate and compare three learning strategies: Deep Q-Network (DQN), Double Deep Q-Network (DDQN), and Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO). Experimental results show that DDQN outperforms DQN in convergence speed and reward accumulation, while PPO demonstrates greater adaptability in sensor-rich, high-noise conditions. Real-map simulations and hourly risk heatmaps validate the effectiveness of our approach, highlighting its potential to inform scalable, data-driven patrol strategies in next-generation smart cities. Inspired by the Toyota Mirai, this study presents a high-fidelity data-driven approach for modelling and simulation of a fuel cell hybrid electric powertrain. This study utilises technical assessment data sourced from Argonne National Laboratory’s publicly available report, faithfully modelling most of the vehicle subsystems as data-driven entities. The simulation framework is developed in the MATLAB/Simulink environment and is based on a power dynamics approach, capturing nonlinear interactions and performance intricacies between different powertrain elements. This study investigates subsystem synergies and performance boundaries under a combined driving cycle composed of the NEDC, WLTP Class 3 and US06 profiles, representing urban, extra-urban and aggressive highway conditions. To emulate the real-world load-following strategy, a state transition power management and allocation method is synthesised. The proposed method dynamically governs the power flow between the fuel cell stack and the traction battery across three operational states, allowing the battery to stay within its allocated bounds. This simulation framework offers a near-accurate and computationally efficient digital counterpart to a commercial hybrid powertrain, serving as a valuable tool for educational and research purposes. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a major toxic gas emitted from vehicle exhaust, industrial processes, and incomplete fuel combustion, posing serious environmental and health risks. Catalytic oxidation of CO into less harmful CO2 is an effective strategy to reduce these emissions. In this study, we investigated the catalytic performance of platinum (Pt) single atoms doped on C3N monolayers with various vacancy defects, including single carbon (CV) and nitrogen (NV) vacancies, using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Our results demonstrate that Pt@NV-C3N exhibited the most favorable catalytic properties, with the highest O2 adsorption energy (−3.07 eV). This performance significantly outperforms Pt atoms doped at other vacancies. It can be attributed to the strong binding between Pt and nitrogen vacancies, which contributes to its excellent resistance to Pt aggregation. CO oxidation on Pt@NV-C3N proceeds via the Eley–Rideal (ER2) mechanism with a low activation barrier of 0.41 eV for the rate-determining step, indicating high catalytic efficiency at low temperatures. These findings suggest that Pt@NV-C3N is a promising candidate for CO oxidation, contributing to developing cost-effective and environmentally sustainable catalysts. The strong binding of Pt atoms to the nitrogen vacancies prevents aggregation, ensuring the stability and durability of the catalyst. The kinetic modeling further revealed that the ER2 mechanism offers the highest reaction rate constants over a wide temperature range (273–700 K). The low activation energy barrier also facilitates CO oxidation at lower temperatures, addressing critical challenges in automotive and industrial pollution control. This study provides valuable theoretical insights for designing advanced single-atom catalysts for environmental remediation applications. Full article

This work proposes a new method to refill fuel cell electric vehicle hydrogen tanks from a storage system in hydrogen refueling stations. The new method uses the storage tanks in cascade to supply hydrogen to the refueling station dispensers. This method reduces the hydrogen compressor power requirement and the energy consumption for refilling the vehicle tank; therefore, the proposed alternative design for hydrogen refueling stations is feasible and compatible with low-intensity renewable energy sources like solar photovoltaic, wind farms, or micro-hydro plants. Additionally, the cascade method supplies higher pressure to the dispenser throughout the day, thus reducing the refueling time for specific vehicle driving ranges. The simulation shows that the energy saving using the cascade method achieves 9% to 45%, depending on the vehicle attendance. The hydrogen refueling station design supports a daily vehicle attendance of 9 to 36 with a complete refueling process coverage. The carried-out simulation proves that the vehicle tank achieves the maximum attainable pressure of 700 bars with a storage system of six tanks. The data analysis shows that the daily hourly hydrogen demand follows a sinusoidal function, providing a practical tool to predict the hydrogen demand for any vehicle attendance, allowing the planners and station designers to resize the elements to fulfill the new requirements. The proposed system is also applicable to hydrogen ICE vehicles. Full article

The maritime sector’s transition to sustainable energy is critical for achieving global carbon neutrality, with container terminals representing a key focus due to their high energy consumption and emissions. This study explores the potential of hydrogen energy as a decarbonization solution for port operations, using the Chuanshan Port Area of Ningbo Zhoushan Port (CPANZP) as a case study. Through a comprehensive analysis of hydrogen production, storage, refueling, and consumption technologies, we demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of integrating hydrogen systems into port infrastructure. Our findings highlight the successful deployment of a hybrid “wind-solar-hydrogen-storage” energy system at CPANZP, which achieves 49.67% renewable energy contribution and an annual reduction of 22,000 tons in carbon emissions. Key advancements include alkaline water electrolysis with 64.48% efficiency, multi-tier hydrogen storage systems, and fuel cell applications for vehicles and power generation. Despite these achievements, challenges such as high production costs, infrastructure scalability, and data integration gaps persist. The study underscores the importance of policy support, technological innovation, and international collaboration to overcome these barriers and accelerate the adoption of hydrogen energy in ports worldwide. This research provides actionable insights for port operators and policymakers aiming to balance operational efficiency with sustainability goals. Full article

This paper presents a data-driven energy management scheme for fuel cell and battery electric vehicles, formulated as a constrained optimal control problem. The proposed method employs a co-state network trained using real-time measurements to estimate the control law without requiring prior knowledge of the system model or a complete dataset across the full operating domain. In contrast to conventional reinforcement learning approaches, this method avoids the issue of high dimensionality and does not depend on extensive offline training. Robustness is demonstrated by treating uncertain and time-varying elements, including power consumption from air conditioning systems, variations in road slope, and passenger-related demands, as unknown disturbances. The desired state of charge is defined as a reference trajectory, and the control input is computed while ensuring compliance with all operational constraints. Validation results based on a combined driving profile confirm the effectiveness of the proposed controller in maintaining the battery charge, reducing fluctuations in fuel cell power output, and ensuring reliable performance under practical conditions. Comparative evaluations are conducted against two benchmark controllers: one designed to maintain a constant state of charge and another based on a soft actor–critic learning algorithm. Full article

As an efficient and low-carbon renewable energy source, hydrogen plays a strategic role in the global energy transition, particularly in the transportation sector. However, the flammable and explosive nature of hydrogen makes leakage risks in enclosed environments a core challenge for the safe promotion of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. Catalytic combustion sensors are ideal choices due to their high sensitivity and long lifespan. Nevertheless, they face technical bottlenecks under vehicle operational conditions, such as high-power consumption caused by elevated working temperatures, slow response rates, weak anti-interference capabilities, and catalyst poisoning. This paper systematically reviews the research status of catalytic combustion hydrogen sensors for vehicle applications, summarizes technical difficulties and development strategies from the perspectives of hydrogen-sensitive material design and integration processes, and provides theoretical references and technical guidance for the development of catalytic combustion hydrogen sensors suitable for vehicle use. The ongoing rise in global electricity demand highlights the need for advanced, efficient, and environmentally responsible energy conversion technologies. This research presents a comprehensive design, modeling, and experimental validation of a tubular permanent magnet linear alternator (PMLA) integrated with a free piston engine system. Linear alternators offer a direct conversion of linear motion to electricity, eliminating the complexity and losses associated with rotary generators and enabling higher efficiency and simplified system architecture. The study combines analytical modeling, finite element simulations, and a sensitivity-based design optimization to guide alternator and engine integration. Two prototype systems, designated as alpha and beta, were developed, modeled, and tested. The beta prototype achieved a maximum electrical output of 550 W at 57% efficiency using natural gas fuel, demonstrating reliable performance at elevated reciprocating frequencies. The design and optimization of specialized flexure springs were essential in achieving stable, high-frequency operation and improved power density. These results validate the effectiveness of the proposed design approach and highlight the scalability and adaptability of PMLA technology for sustainable power generation. Ultimately, this study demonstrates the potential of free piston linear generator systems as efficient, robust, and environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional rotary generators, with applications spanning hybrid electric vehicles, distributed energy systems, and combined heat and power. Autonomous drones may be called on to perform search-and-rescue operations in environments without access to signals from the global navigation satellite system (GNSS), such as underground mines, subterranean caverns, or confined tunnels. While technology to perform such missions has been demonstrated at events such as DARPA’s Subterranean (Sub-T) Challenge, the hardware deployed for these missions relies on heavy and expensive sensors, such as LiDAR, carried by costly mobile platforms, such as legged robots and heavy-lift multicopters, creating barriers for deployment and training with this technology for all but the wealthiest search-and-rescue organizations. To address this issue, we have developed a custom four-rotor aerial drone platform specifically built around low-cost low-weight sensors in order to minimize costs and maximize flight time for search-and-rescue operations in GNSS-denied environments. We document the various issues we encountered during the building and testing of the vehicle and how they were solved, for instance a novel redesign of the airframe to handle the aggressive yaw maneuvers commanded by the FUEL exploration framework running onboard the drone. The resulting system is successfully validated through a hardware autonomous flight experiment performed in an underground environment without access to GNSS signals. The contribution of the article is to share our experiences with other groups interested in low-cost search-and-rescue drones to help them advance their own programs. Full article

Techno-Economic Analysis of Hydrogen Hybrid Vehicles

Driven by carbon neutrality and peak carbon policies, hydrogen energy, due to its zero-emission and renewable properties, is increasingly being used in hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (H-FCVs). However, the high cost and limited durability of H-FCVs hinder large-scale deployment. Hydrogen internal combustion engine hybrid electric vehicles (H-HEVs) are emerging as a viable alternative. Research on the techno-economics of H-HEVs remains limited, particularly in systematic comparisons with H-FCVs. This paper provides a comprehensive comparison of H-FCVs and H-HEVs in terms of total cost of ownership (TCO) and hydrogen consumption while proposing a multi-objective powertrain parameter optimization model. First, a quantitative model evaluates TCO from vehicle purchase to disposal. Second, a global dynamic programming method optimizes hydrogen consumption by incorporating cumulative energy costs into the TCO model. Finally, a genetic algorithm co-optimizes key design parameters to minimize TCO. Results show that with a battery capacity of 20.5 Ah and an H-FC peak power of 55 kW, H-FCV can achieve optimal fuel economy and hydrogen consumption. However, even with advanced technology, their TCO remains higher than that of H-HEVs. H-FCVs can only become cost-competitive if the unit power price of the fuel cell system is less than 4.6 times that of the hydrogen engine system, assuming negligible fuel cell degradation. In the short term, H-HEVs should be prioritized. Their adoption can also support the long-term development of H-FCVs through a complementary relationship. Full article
