The increasing depletion of fossil fuels and their environmental impact have led to the development of fuel cell hybrid electric vehicles. By combining fuel cells with batteries, these vehicles offer greater efficiency and zero emissions. However, their energy management remains a challenge requiring advanced strategies. This paper presents a comparative study of two developed energy management strategies: a deterministic rule-based approach and a fuzzy logic approach. The proposed system consists of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) as the primary energy source and a lithium-ion battery as the secondary source. A comprehensive model of the hybrid powertrain is developed to evaluate energy distribution and system behaviour. The control system includes a model predictive control (MPC) method for fuel cell current regulation and a PI controller to maintain DC bus voltage stability. The proposed strategies are evaluated under standard driving cycles (UDDS and NEDC) using a simulation in MATLAB/Simulink. Key performance indicators such as fuel efficiency, hydrogen consumption, battery state-of-charge, and voltage stability are examined to assess the effectiveness of each approach. Simulation results demonstrate that the deterministic strategy offers a structured and computationally efficient solution, while the fuzzy logic approach provides greater adaptability to dynamic driving conditions, leading to improved overall energy efficiency. These findings highlight the critical role of advanced control strategies in improving FCHEV performance and offer valuable insights for future developments in hybrid-vehicle energy management. The widespread adoption of electric buses represents a major step forward in sustainable transportation, but also brings new operational challenges, particularly in terms of improving their efficiency and controlling costs. Therefore, battery energy consumption management is a key approach for addressing these issues. Accurate prediction of energy consumption and interpretation of the influencing factors are essential for improving operational efficiency, optimizing energy use, and reducing operating costs. Although existing studies have made progress in battery energy consumption prediction, challenges remain in achieving high-precision modeling and conducting a comprehensive analysis of the influencing features. To address these gaps, this study proposes a two-layer stacking framework for estimating the energy consumption of electric buses. The first layer integrates the strengths of three nonlinear regression models—RF (Random Forest), GBDT (Gradient Boosted Decision Trees), and CatBoost (Categorical Boosting)—to enhance the modeling capacity for complex feature relationships. The second layer employs a Linear Regression model as a meta-learner to aggregate the predictions from the base models and improve the overall predictive performance. The framework is trained on 2023 operational data from two electric bus routes (NO. 355 and NO. W188) in Changsha, China, incorporating battery system parameters, driving characteristics, and environmental variables as independent variables for model training and analysis. Comparative experiments with various ensemble models demonstrate that the proposed stacking framework exhibits superior performance in data fitting. Furthermore, XGBoost (Extreme Gradient Boosting, version 2.1.4) is introduced as a surrogate model to approximate the decision logic of the stacking framework, enabling SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations) analysis to quantify the contribution and marginal effects of influencing features. The proposed stacked and surrogate models achieved superior battery energy consumption prediction accuracy (lowest MSE, RMSE, and MAE), significantly outperforming benchmark models on real-world datasets. SHAP analysis quantified the overall contributions of feature categories (battery operation parameters: 56.5%; driving characteristics: 42.3%; environmental data: 1.2%), further revealing the specific contributions and nonlinear influence mechanisms of individual features. These quantitative findings offer specific guidance for optimizing battery system control and driving behavior. Full article

The green transformation of traditional energy structures and the development of the new energy industry are crucial drivers of sustainable development in the country. The ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (2016–2025; APAEC [2016–2025]), established in 2016, has significantly promoted the growth of the new energy sector and enhanced energy structures across Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). This initiative has also inspired these countries to develop corresponding industrial policies aimed at supporting the new energy vehicle (NEV) industry, resulting in significant growth in this sector within the ASEAN region. This paper analyzes the factors influencing the development of the NEV industry in the context of ASEAN’s new energy policies, drawing empirical insights from data collected across six ASEAN countries from 2013 to 2024. Following the implementation of the APAEC (2016–2025), it was observed that ASEAN countries reached a consensus on energy development and cooperation, collaboratively advancing the NEV industry through regional policies. Furthermore, factors such as national governance, financial development, education levels, and the size of the automotive market positively contribute to the growth of the NEV industry in ASEAN. Conversely, high energy consumption can hinder its progress. Additionally, further research indicates that the APAEC (2016–2025) has exerted a more pronounced impact on countries with robust automotive industry foundations or those prioritizing relevant policies. The findings of this paper offer valuable insights for ASEAN countries in the formulating policies for the NEV industry, optimizing energy structures, and achieving low-carbon energy transition and sustainable development. The introduction of Renewable Energy Sources (RESs) into the electricity grid is changing the price dynamics of the electricity market and creating room for flexibility on the consumption side. This paper investigates different aspects of the interaction between the RES share, electricity spot prices, and electric vehicle (EV) charging strategies. Based on empirical data from Germany, France, and the Czech Republic for the period 2015–2025, four research hypotheses are tested using correlation and regression analysis, cost simulations, and classification algorithms. The results confirm a negative correlation between the RES share and electricity prices, as well as the effectiveness of smart charging in reducing costs. At the same time, it is shown that the occurrence of negative prices is significantly affected by a high RES share. The correlation analysis further suggests that higher production from RESs increases the potential for price optimisation through smart charging. The findings have implications for policymaking aimed at flexible consumption and efficient RES integration. Full article

The typical ranges available for electric vehicles (EVs) may be considered by users to be inadequate when compared to long, real-life trips, and charging operations may need to be planned along journeys. To evaluate the compatibility between vehicle features and charging options for realistic journeys performed by car, a simulation approach is proposed here, using travel data collected from real vehicles to obtain trip chains for multiple consecutive days. Car travel activities, including stops with the option of charging, were simulated by applying an agent-based approach. Charging operations can be integrated into trip chains for user activities, assuming that they remain unchanged in the event that vehicles switch to electric. The energy consumption of the analyzed trips, disaggregated by vehicle type, was estimated using the average travel speed, which is useful for capturing the main route features (ranging from urban to motorways). Data were recorded for approximately 25,000 vehicles in the Turin Metropolitan Area for six consecutive days. Market segmentation of the vehicles was introduced to take into consideration different energy consumption rates and charging times, given that the electric power, battery size, and consumption rate can be related to the vehicle category. Charging activities carried out using public infrastructure during idle time between consecutive trips, as well as those carried out at home or work, were identified in order to model different needs. Understanding vehicle emissions is essential for developing effective carbon reduction strategies in the transport sector. Conventional emission models often assume homogeneity and linearity, overlooking real-world asymmetries that arise from variations in vehicle design and powertrain configurations. This study explores how machine learning and explainable AI techniques can effectively capture both symmetric and asymmetric emission patterns across different vehicle types, thereby contributing to more sustainable transport planning. Addressing a key gap in the existing literature, the study poses the following question: how do structural and behavioral factors contribute to asymmetric emission responses in internal combustion engine vehicles compared to new energy vehicles? Utilizing a large-scale Spanish vehicle registration dataset, the analysis classifies vehicles by powertrain type and applies five supervised learning algorithms to predict CO2 emissions. SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAPs) are employed to identify nonlinear and threshold-based relationships between emissions and vehicle characteristics such as fuel consumption, weight, and height. Among the models tested, the Random Forest algorithm achieves the highest predictive accuracy. The findings reveal critical asymmetries in emission behavior, particularly among hybrid vehicles, which challenge the assumption of uniform policy applicability. This study provides both methodological innovation and practical insights for symmetry-aware emission modeling, offering support for more targeted eco-design and policy decisions that align with long-term sustainability goals. This paper proposes a novel dual-functional radar-communication (DFRC) framework that integrates unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communications into an integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system, termed the ISAC-UAV architecture. In this system, the UAV’s mobility is leveraged to simultaneously serve multiple single-antenna uplink users (UEs) and perform radar-based sensing tasks. A key challenge stems from the target position uncertainty due to movement, which impairs matched filtering and beamforming, thereby degrading both uplink reception and sensing performance. Moreover, UAV energy consumption associated with mobility must be considered to ensure energy-efficient operation. We aim to jointly maximize radar sensing accuracy and minimize UAV movement energy over multiple time steps, while maintaining reliable uplink communications. To address this multi-objective optimization, we propose a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) framework based on a long short-term memory (LSTM)-enhanced deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) network. By leveraging historical target trajectory data, the model improves prediction of target positions, enhancing sensing accuracy. The proposed DRL-based approach enables joint optimization of UAV trajectory and uplink power control over time. Extensive simulations validate that our method significantly improves communication quality and sensing performance, while ensuring energy-efficient UAV operation. Comparative results further confirm the model’s adaptability and robustness in dynamic environments, outperforming existing UAV trajectory planning and resource allocation benchmarks. Full article

To further enhance the economic performance of fuel cell vehicles (FCVs), this study develops a model-adaptive model predictive control (MPC) strategy. This strategy leverages the dynamic relationship between proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) output characteristics and temperature to track its optimal operating temperature (OOT), addressing challenges of temperature control accuracy and high energy consumption in the PEMFC thermal management system (TMS). First, PEMFC and TMS models were developed and experimentally validated. Subsequently, the PEMFC power–temperature coupling curve was experimentally determined under multiple operating conditions to serve as the reference trajectory for TMS multi-objective optimization. For MPC controller design, the TMS model was linearized and discretized, yielding a predictive model adaptable to different load demands for stack temperature across the full operating range. A multi-constrained quadratic cost function was formulated, aiming to minimize the deviation of the PEMFC operating temperature from the OOT while accounting for TMS parasitic power consumption. Finally, simulations under Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Cycle (WLTC) conditions evaluated the OOT tracking performance of both PID and MPC control strategies, as well as their impact on stack efficiency and TMS energy consumption at different ambient temperatures. The results indicate that, compared to PID control, MPC reduces temperature tracking error by 33%, decreases fan and pump speed fluctuations by over 24%, and lowers TMS energy consumption by 10%. These improvements enhance PEMFC operational stability and improve FCV energy efficiency. Full article

This work proposes a new method to refill fuel cell electric vehicle hydrogen tanks from a storage system in hydrogen refueling stations. The new method uses the storage tanks in cascade to supply hydrogen to the refueling station dispensers. This method reduces the hydrogen compressor power requirement and the energy consumption for refilling the vehicle tank; therefore, the proposed alternative design for hydrogen refueling stations is feasible and compatible with low-intensity renewable energy sources like solar photovoltaic, wind farms, or micro-hydro plants. Additionally, the cascade method supplies higher pressure to the dispenser throughout the day, thus reducing the refueling time for specific vehicle driving ranges. The simulation shows that the energy saving using the cascade method achieves 9% to 45%, depending on the vehicle attendance. The hydrogen refueling station design supports a daily vehicle attendance of 9 to 36 with a complete refueling process coverage. The carried-out simulation proves that the vehicle tank achieves the maximum attainable pressure of 700 bars with a storage system of six tanks. The data analysis shows that the daily hourly hydrogen demand follows a sinusoidal function, providing a practical tool to predict the hydrogen demand for any vehicle attendance, allowing the planners and station designers to resize the elements to fulfill the new requirements. The proposed system is also applicable to hydrogen ICE vehicles. Full article

The maritime sector’s transition to sustainable energy is critical for achieving global carbon neutrality, with container terminals representing a key focus due to their high energy consumption and emissions. This study explores the potential of hydrogen energy as a decarbonization solution for port operations, using the Chuanshan Port Area of Ningbo Zhoushan Port (CPANZP) as a case study. Through a comprehensive analysis of hydrogen production, storage, refueling, and consumption technologies, we demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of integrating hydrogen systems into port infrastructure. Our findings highlight the successful deployment of a hybrid “wind-solar-hydrogen-storage” energy system at CPANZP, which achieves 49.67% renewable energy contribution and an annual reduction of 22,000 tons in carbon emissions. Key advancements include alkaline water electrolysis with 64.48% efficiency, multi-tier hydrogen storage systems, and fuel cell applications for vehicles and power generation. Despite these achievements, challenges such as high production costs, infrastructure scalability, and data integration gaps persist. The study underscores the importance of policy support, technological innovation, and international collaboration to overcome these barriers and accelerate the adoption of hydrogen energy in ports worldwide. This research provides actionable insights for port operators and policymakers aiming to balance operational efficiency with sustainability goals. Full article

This article addresses the path planning problem for complete structural inspection using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The proposed method emphasizes the scalability of the viewpoints and aims to provide practical solutions to different inspection distance requirements, eliminating the need for extra view-planning procedures. First, the mixed-viewpoint generation is proposed. Then, the Multi-Layered Angle-Distance Traveling Salesman Problem (ML-ADTSP) is solved, which aims to reduce overall energy consumption and inspection path complexity. A two-step Genetic Algorithm (GA) is used to solve the combinatorial optimization problem. The performance of different crossover functions is also discussed. By solving the ML-ADTSP, the simulation results demonstrate that the mean accelerations of the UAV throughout the inspection path are flattened significantly, improving the overall path smoothness and reducing traversal difficulty. With minor low-level optimization, the proposed framework can be applied to inspect different structures. Full article

This paper presents a data-driven energy management scheme for fuel cell and battery electric vehicles, formulated as a constrained optimal control problem. The proposed method employs a co-state network trained using real-time measurements to estimate the control law without requiring prior knowledge of the system model or a complete dataset across the full operating domain. In contrast to conventional reinforcement learning approaches, this method avoids the issue of high dimensionality and does not depend on extensive offline training. Robustness is demonstrated by treating uncertain and time-varying elements, including power consumption from air conditioning systems, variations in road slope, and passenger-related demands, as unknown disturbances. The desired state of charge is defined as a reference trajectory, and the control input is computed while ensuring compliance with all operational constraints. Validation results based on a combined driving profile confirm the effectiveness of the proposed controller in maintaining the battery charge, reducing fluctuations in fuel cell power output, and ensuring reliable performance under practical conditions. Comparative evaluations are conducted against two benchmark controllers: one designed to maintain a constant state of charge and another based on a soft actor–critic learning algorithm. Full article

Maintaining the required relative humidity values in the vehicle cabin is an important HVAC task, along with considerations related to the temperature, velocity, air pressure and noise. Deviation from the optimal values worsens the psycho-physiological state of the driver and affects the energy efficiency of the train. In this study, a model of liquid film formation on and removal from various cabin surfaces was constructed using the fundamental Navier–Stokes hydrodynamic equations. A special transport model based on the liquid vapor diffusion equation was used to simulate the air environment inside the cabin. The evaporation and condensation of surface films were simulated using the Euler film model, which directly considers liquid–gas and gas–liquid transitions. Numerical results were obtained using the RANS equations and a turbulence model by means of the finite volume method in Ansys CFD. Conjugate fields of temperature, velocity and moisture concentration were constructed for various time intervals, and the dependence values for the film thicknesses on various surfaces relative to time were determined. The verification was conducted in comparison with the experimental data, based on the protocol for measuring the microclimate indicators in workplaces, as applied to the train cabin: the average ranges encompassed temperature changes from 11% to 18%, and relative humidity ranges from 16% to 26%. Comparison with the results of other studies, without considering the phase transition and condensation, shows that, for the warm mode, the average air temperature in the cabin with condensation is 12.5% lower than without condensation, which is related to the process of liquid evaporation from the heated walls. The difference in temperature values for the model with and without condensation ranged from −12.5% to +4.9%. We demonstrate that, with an effective mode of removing condensate film from the window surface, including recirculation modes, the energy consumption of the climate control system improves significantly, but this requires a more accurate consideration of thermodynamic parameters and relative humidity. Thus, considering the moisture condensation model reveals that this variable can significantly affect other parameters of the microclimate in cabins: in particular, the temperature. This means that it should be considered in the numerical modeling, along with the basic heat transfer equations. Full article

With the rapid development of intelligent transportation systems (ITSs) and Internet of Things (IoT), vehicle-mounted edge computing (VEC) networks are facing the challenge of handling increasingly growing computation-intensive and latency-sensitive tasks. In the UAV-assisted VEC network, by introducing mobile edge servers, the coverage of ground infrastructure is effectively supplemented. However, there is still the problem of decision-making lag in a highly dynamic environment. This paper proposes a deep reinforcement learning framework based on the long short-term memory (LSTM) network for trajectory prediction to optimize resource allocation in UAV-assisted VEC networks. Uniquely integrating vehicle trajectory prediction with the Twin Delayed Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (TD3) algorithm, this framework enables proactive computation offloading and UAV trajectory planning. Specifically, we design an LSTM network with an attention mechanism to predict the future trajectory of vehicles and integrate the prediction results into the optimization decision-making process. We propose state smoothing and data augmentation techniques to improve training stability and design a multi-objective optimization model that incorporates the Age of Information (AoI), energy consumption, and resource leasing costs. The simulation results show that compared with existing methods, the method proposed in this paper significantly reduces the total system cost, improves the information freshness, and exhibits better environmental adaptability and convergence performance under various network conditions. Background: To address the uncertainties of renewable energy power generation, the disorderly charging characteristics of electric vehicles, and the high electricity cost of the power grid in expressway service areas, a method of economic dispatch optimization based on the improved particle swarm optimization algorithm is proposed in this study. Methods: Mathematical models of photovoltaic power generation, energy storage systems, and electric vehicles were established, thereby constructing the microgrid system model of the power load in the expressway service area. Taking the economic cost of electricity consumption in the service area as the objective function and simultaneously meeting constraints such as power balance, power grid interactions, and energy storage systems, a microgrid economy dispatch model is constructed. An improved particle swarm optimization algorithm with time-varying parameters of the inertia weight and learning factor was designed to solve the optimal dispatching strategy. The inertia weight was improved by adopting the Gaussian decreasing method, and the asymmetric dynamic learning factor was adjusted simultaneously. Findings: Field case studies demonstrate that, compared to other algorithms, the improved Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm effectively reduces the operational costs of microgrid systems while exhibiting accelerated convergence speed and enhanced robustness. Value: This study provides a theoretical mathematical reference for the economic dispatch optimization of microgrids in renewable-integrated transportation systems. Full article
