With the significant growth in the number of PHEVs, conducting in-depth research on their CO2 emission characteristics is essential. This study used the Horiba OBS-ONE Portable Emission Measurement System (PEMS) to measure the CO2 emissions of three Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) types: one Series Hybrid Electric Vehicle (S-HEV), one Parallel Hybrid Electric Vehicle (P-HEV), and one Series-Parallel Hybrid Electric Vehicle (SP-HEV), during real driving conditions. The findings show a correlation between acceleration and increased CO2 emissions for P-HEV, while acceleration has a relatively minor impact on S-HEV and SP-HEV emissions. Under urban driving conditions, the SP-HEV displays the lowest average CO2 emission rate. However, under suburban and highway conditions, the average CO2 emission rates follow the order S-HEV > SP-HEV > P-HEV. An analysis of CO2 emission factors across different road types and vehicle-specific power (VSP) ranges indicates that within low VSP intervals (VSP ≤ 0 for urban, VSP ≤ 5 for suburban, and VSP ≤ 15 for highway roads), the P-HEV exhibits the best CO2 emission control. As VSP increases, the P-HEV’s emission factors rise under all three road conditions, with its emission control capability weakening when VSP exceeds 5 in urban, 15 in suburban, and 20 on highway roads. For the SP-HEV, CO2 emission factors increase with VSP in urban and suburban areas but remain stable on highways. The S-HEV shows minimal changes in emission factors with varying VSP. Travel Frequent-Route Identification Based on the Snake Algorithm Using License Plate Recognition Data

Path flow always plays a critical role in extracting vehicle travel patterns and reflecting network-scale traffic features. However, the comprehensive topological structure of urban road networks induces massive route choices, so frequent travel routes have been gradually regarded as an ideal countermeasure to represent traffic states. Widely used license plate recognition (LPR) devices can collect the abundant traffic features of all vehicles, but their sparse spatial distributions restrict the conventional models in frequent travel identification. Therefore, this study develops a network reconstruction method to construct a topological network from the LPR dataset, avoiding the adverse effects caused by the sparse distribution of detectors on the road network and further uses the Snake algorithm to fully utilize the road network structure and traffic attributes for clustering to obtain various travel patterns, with frequent routes under different travel patterns finally identified based on Steiner trees and frequent item recognition. To address the sparse spatial distribution of LPR devices, we utilize the word2vec model to extract spatial correlations among intersections. A threshold-based method is then applied to transform the correlation matrix into a reconstructed network, connecting intersections with strong vehicle transition relationships. This community structure can be interpreted as representing different travel patterns. Consequently, the Snake algorithm is employed to cluster intersections into distinct categories, reflecting these varied travel patterns. By leveraging the word2vec model, the detector installation rate requirement for Snake is significantly reduced, ensuring that the clustering results accurately represent the intrinsic relevance of traffic roads. Subsequently, frequent routes are identified from both macro- and micro-perspectives using the Steiner tree and Frequent Pattern Growth (FP Growth) algorithm, respectively. Validated on the LPR dataset in Changsha, China, the experiment results demonstrate that the proposed method can effectively identify travel patterns and extract frequent routes in the sparsely installed LPR devices. This study evaluates the performance and energy trade-offs of three popular data processing libraries—Pandas, PySpark, and Polars—applied to GreenNav, a CO2 emission prediction pipeline for urban traffic. GreenNav is an eco-friendly navigation app designed to predict CO2 emissions and determine low-carbon routes using a hybrid CNN-LSTM model integrated into a complete pipeline for the ingestion and processing of large, heterogeneous geospatial and road data. Our study quantifies the end-to-end execution time, cumulative CPU load, and maximum RAM consumption for each library when applied to the GreenNav pipeline; it then converts these metrics into energy consumption and CO2 equivalents. Experiments conducted on datasets ranging from 100 MB to 8 GB demonstrate that Polars in lazy mode offers substantial gains, reducing the processing time by a factor of more than twenty, memory consumption by about two-thirds, and energy consumption by about 60%, while maintaining the predictive accuracy of the model (R2 ≈ 0.91). These results clearly show that the careful selection of data processing libraries can reconcile high computing performance and environmental sustainability in large-scale machine learning applications. For the last few decades, the use of High-Speed Trains (HSTs) has been growing rapidly in various parts of the world. Despite rapid global expansion, many HST projects fail due to demand overestimation and cost overruns. This study analyzes factors influencing HST demand in Indonesia, aiming to identify impactful determinants from user perspectives. Employing a quantitative cross-sectional approach, this research utilized questionnaires distributed to users of different modes of transportation in the Jakarta–Bandung area, including trains, buses, travel services, and private cars. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) via Lisrel software was used to analyze the data. The results indicate that Transit-Oriented Developments (TOD) and new urban areas significantly increase HST demand by facilitating urban growth and development. Additionally, supporting infrastructure and external factors such as road accessibility, parking availability, shuttle services, and environmental integration are pivotal in shaping commuter preferences. Although factors such as safety, comfort, and reliability are important, they alone may not be adequate to persuade consumers to use high-speed trains for their travel. Full article

The rapid adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) has driven a strong need for optimizing locations of electric vehicle charging stations (EVCSs). Previous methods for locating EVCSs rely on statistical and optimization models, but these methods have limitations in capturing complex nonlinear relationships and spatial dependencies among factors influencing EVCS locations. To address this research gap and better understand the spatial impacts of urban activities on EVCS placement, this study presents a spatially aware machine learning (SAML) method that combines a multi-layer perceptron (MLP) model with a spatial loss function to optimize EVCS sites. Additionally, the method uses the Shapley additive explanation (SHAP) technique to investigate nonlinear relationships embedded in EVCS placement. Using the city of Wuhan as a case study, the SAML method reveals that parking site (PS), road density (RD), population density (PD), and commercial residential (CR) areas are key factors in determining optimal EVCS sites. The SAML model classifies these grid cells into no EVCS demand (0 EVCS), low EVCS demand (from 1 to 3 EVCSs), and high EVCS demand (4+ EVCSs) classes. The model performs well in predicting EVCS demand. Findings from ablation tests also indicate that the inclusion of spatial correlations in the model’s loss function significantly enhances the model’s performance. Additionally, results from case studies validate that the model is effective in predicting EVCSs in other metropolitan cities. Full article

Urban regeneration is an important issue in urban development, in which the regeneration of historic districts is a frontier and sensitive field. In this study, the regeneration process of Zhongshan Road Historic District in Qingdao, China, spanning over three decades from 1990 until the present, was investigated, and an analysis was performed using a longitudinal case study approach involving interviews, field visits, and the literature data within the analytical framework of the interaction between “space production” and “place-making”. The findings are as follows: (1) The regeneration of Zhongshan Road can be understood as “space production” dominated by power and capital seeking to maximize the benefits. This process can be divided into five stages, with the intensity of the “space production”, dominated by power and capital, becoming increasingly higher, and the means of achieving “space production” within “place-making” becoming progressively more covert. (2) “Place-making” consists of five stages: no place, symbolic place, imaginary place, declining place, and new place. (3) “Place-making” counteracts “space production”, making the subjects of “space production” constantly adjust their production strategies and methods. The main theoretical contribution of this study is the introduction of “place-making” into the analytical framework of “space production”, thereby deepening the empirical analytical capacity of “space production” theory and offering effective insights for the regeneration of historic districts. While there are studies on bicycle crashes, no study has investigated the spatial analysis of fatal and injury bicycle crashes in the state of Ohio. This study fills this gap in the literature by mapping and investigating the bicycle crash-prone areas in the state. It analyzes fatal and injury bicycle crashes from 2014 to 2023 by utilizing four exploratory spatial data analysis techniques: nearest neighbor index, global Moran’s I index, hotspot and cold spot analysis, and local Moran’s I index at the state, county, census tract, and block group levels. Results vary slightly across techniques and spatial scales but consistently show that bicycle crash locations are clustered statewide, particularly in the state’s major metropolitan areas such as Columbus, Cincinnati, Toledo, Cleveland, and Akron. These urban centers have emerged as hotspots, indicating a higher vulnerability to bicycle crashes. While global Moran’s I analysis at the county level does not reveal significant spatial autocorrelation, a strong positive autocorrelation is observed at both the census tract (p = 0.01) and block group (p = 0.00) levels, indicating significant high clustering, signifying that finer geographical units yield more robust results. Identifying specific hotspots and vulnerable areas provides valuable insights for policymakers and urban planners to implement effective safety measures and improve conditions for non-motorized road users in Ohio. The study highlights the need for targeted mitigation strategies in high-risk areas, including comprehensive safety measures, infrastructure improvements, policy changes, and community-focused initiatives to reduce crash risk and create safer environments for cyclists throughout Ohio’s urban fabric. Urban population growth is intensifying pressure on mobility systems, with road transportation contributing to environmental and sustainability challenges. Policymakers must navigate complex uncertainties in addressing rising mobility demand while pursuing sustainability goals. Advanced technologies offer promise, but their real-world effectiveness in urban contexts remains underexplored. This meta-review comprised three complementary studies: a broad analysis of sustainable mobility with Norwegian case studies, and systematic literature reviews on digital twins and Big Data/AI applications in urban mobility, covering the period of 2019–2024. Using structured criteria, we synthesised findings from 72 relevant articles to identify major trends, limitations, and opportunities. The findings show that mobility policies often prioritise technocentric solutions that unintentionally hinder sustainability goals. Digital twins show potential for traffic simulation, urban planning, and public engagement, while machine learning techniques support traffic forecasting and multimodal integration. However, persistent challenges include data interoperability, model validation, and insufficient stakeholder engagement. We identify a hierarchy of mobility modes where public transit and active mobility outperform private vehicles in sustainability and user satisfaction. Integrating electrification and automation and sharing models with data-informed governance can enhance urban liveability. We propose actionable pathways leveraging Big Data and AI, outlining the roles of various stakeholders in advancing sustainable urban mobility futures. Full article

Traffic congestion in large-scale road networks significantly impacts urban sustainability. Traditional traffic signal control methods lack adaptability to dynamic traffic conditions. Recently, deep reinforcement learning (DRL) has emerged as a promising solution for optimizing signal control. This study proposes a Multi-Agent Deep Reinforcement Learning (MADRL) framework for large-scale traffic signal control. The framework employs spatio-temporal attention networks to extract relevant traffic patterns and a hierarchical reinforcement learning strategy for coordinated multi-agent optimization. The problem is formulated as a Markov Decision Process (MDP) with a novel reward function that balances vehicle waiting time, throughput, and fairness. We validate our approach on simulated large-scale traffic scenarios using SUMO (Simulation of Urban Mobility). Experimental results demonstrate that our framework reduces vehicle waiting time by 25% compared to baseline methods while maintaining scalability across different road network sizes. The proposed spatio-temporal multi-agent reinforcement learning framework effectively optimizes large-scale traffic signal control, providing a scalable and efficient solution for smart urban transportation. Although particulate matter (PM) pollution from vehicles’ exhaust has decreased significantly over the years, the contribution from non-exhaust sources (brakes, tyres) has remained at the same levels. In the European Union (EU), Euro 7 regulation introduced PM limits for vehicles’ brake systems. Regenerative braking, i.e., recuperation of the deceleration kinetic and potential energy to the vehicle battery, is one of the strategies to reduce the brake emission levels and improve vehicle efficiency. According to the regulation, the shares of friction and regenerative braking can be determined with actual testing of the vehicle on a chassis dynamometer. In this study we tested the regenerative capabilities of a plug-in hybrid vehicle, both in the laboratory and on the road, under different protocols (including both smooth and aggressive braking) and covering a wide range of driving conditions (urban, rural, motorway) over 10,000 km of driving. Good agreement was obtained between laboratory and on-road tests, with the use of the friction brakes being on average 7% and 5.3%, respectively. However, at the same time it was demonstrated that the friction braking share can vary over a wide range (up to around 30%), depending on the driver’s behaviour. Full article

Landscape Ecological Risk Assessment of Peri-Urban Villages in the Yangtze River Delta Based on Ecosystem Service Values

The rapid urbanization process has accelerated the degradation of ecosystem services (ESs) in peri-urban rural areas of the Yangtze River Delta (YRD), leading to increasing landscape ecological risks (LERs). Establishing a scientifically grounded landscape ecological risk assessment (LERA) system and corresponding control strategies is therefore imperative. Using rural areas of Jiangning District, Nanjing as a case study, this research proposes an optimized dual-dimensional coupling assessment framework that integrates ecosystem service value (ESV) and ecological risk probability. The spatiotemporal evolution of LER in 2000, 2010, and 2020 and its key driving factors were further studied by using spatial autocorrelation analysis and geodetector methods. The results show the following: (1) From 2000 to 2020, cultivated land remained dominant, but its proportion decreased by 10.87%, while construction land increased by 26.52%, with minimal changes in other land use types. (2) The total ESV increased by CNY 1.67 × 109, with regulating services accounting for over 82%, among which water bodies contributed the most. (3) LER showed an overall increasing trend, with medium- to highest-risk areas expanding by 55.37%, lowest-risk areas increasing by 10.10%, and lower-risk areas decreasing by 65.48%. (4) Key driving factors include landscape vulnerability, vegetation coverage, and ecological land connectivity, with the influence of distance to road becoming increasingly significant. This study reveals the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of LER in typical peri-urban villages. Based on the LERA results, combined with terrain features and ecological pressure intensity, the study area was divided into three ecological management zones: ecological conservation, ecological restoration, and ecological enhancement. Corresponding zoning strategies were proposed to guide rural ecological governance and support regional sustainable development. Full article

The strategic allocation of advertising billboards has become a critical aspect of urban planning and resource management. While previous studies have explored site selection based on road network and population data, they have often overlooked the diminishing marginal returns of overlapping coverage and neglected to efficiently process large-scale urban datasets. To address these challenges, this study proposes two complementary optimization methods: an enhanced greedy algorithm based on geometric modeling and spatial acceleration techniques, and a reinforcement learning approach using Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO). The enhanced greedy algorithm incorporates population-weighted road coverage modeling, employs a geometric series to capture diminishing returns from overlapping coverage, and integrates spatial indexing and parallel computing to significantly improve scalability and solution quality in large urban networks. Meanwhile, the PPO-based method models billboard site selection as a sequential decision-making process in a dynamic environment, where agents adaptively learn optimal deployment strategies through reward signals, balancing coverage gains and redundancy penalties and effectively handling complex multi-step optimization tasks. Experiments conducted on Wuhan’s road network demonstrate that both methods effectively optimize population-weighted billboard coverage under budget constraints while enhancing spatial distribution balance. Quantitatively, the enhanced greedy algorithm improves coverage effectiveness by 18.6% compared to the baseline, while the PPO-based method further improves it by 4.3% with enhanced spatial equity. The proposed framework provides a robust and scalable decision-support tool for urban advertising infrastructure planning and resource allocation. Full article

Urban infrastructure, such as water supply networks, sewage systems, and electricity networks, is essential for the functioning of cities and, consequently, for the well-being of citizens. Despite its essentiality, the distribution of infrastructure in urban areas is not homogeneous, especially in cities in developing countries. Socially vulnerable areas often face significant deficiencies in sewage and road paving, exacerbating urban inequalities. In this regard, urban planners must consider the multiple elements of urban infrastructure and assess the compensation levels between them to reduce inequality effectively. In particular, the complexity of the problem necessitates considering the multidimensionality and heterogeneity of urban infrastructure. This complexity qualifies the operational framework of composite indicators as the natural solution to the problem. This study develops a new weighting system for the balanced expansion of urban infrastructures through composite indicators constructed by the Ordered Weighted Average operator. Implementing these weighting systems provides an opportunity to analyze urban infrastructure from different perspectives, offering transparency regarding the weaknesses and strengths of each perspective. This prevents unreliable representations from being used in decision-making and provides a solid basis for allocating investments in urban infrastructure. In particular, the study suggests that adopting weighting systems that prioritize intermediate values and avoid extreme values can lead to better resource allocation, helping to identify areas with deficient infrastructure and promoting more equitable urban development. Autonomous vehicles (AVs) have emerged as a promising sustainable urban mobility solution, expected to lead to enhanced road safety, smoother traffic flows, less traffic congestion, improved accessibility, better energy utilization and environmental performance, as well as more efficient passenger and freight transportation, in terms of time and cost, due to better fleet management and platooning. However, challenges also arise, mostly related to data privacy, security and cyber-security, high acquisition and infrastructure costs, accident liability, even possible increased traffic congestion and air pollution due to induced travel demand. This paper presents the results of a survey conducted among 654 residents who experienced an autonomous bus (AB) service in the city of Trikala, Greece, in order to assess their willingness to use (WTU) and willingness to pay (WTP) for ABs, through testing a range of factors based on a literature review. Results useful to policy-makers were extracted, such as that the intention to use ABs was mostly shaped by psychological factors (e.g., users’ perceptions of usefulness and safety, and trust in the service provider), while WTU seemed to be positively affected by previous experience in using ABs. In contrast, sociodemographic factors were found to have very little effect on the intention to use ABs, while apart from personal utility, users’ perceptions of how autonomous driving will improve the overall life standards in the study area also mattered. Urban health planning requires a multi-scalar understanding of the territory, capable of capturing socio-economic inequalities and health needs at the local level. In the case of Rome, current administrative subdivisions—Urban Zones (Zone Urbanistiche)—are too large and internally heterogeneous to serve as effective units for equitable health planning. This study presents a methodology for the territorial redefinition of Rome’s Municipality III, aimed at supporting healthcare planning through an integrated analysis of census sections. These were grouped using a combination of census-based socio-demographic indicators (educational attainment, employment status, single-person households) and real estate values (OMI data), alongside administrative and road network data. The resulting territorial units—21 newly defined Mesoareas—are smaller than Urban Zones but larger than individual census sections and correspond to socio-territorially homogeneous neighborhoods; this structure enables a more nuanced spatial understanding of health-related inequalities. The proposed model is replicable, adaptable to other urban contexts, and offers a solid analytical basis for more equitable and targeted health planning, as well as for broader urban policy interventions aimed at promoting spatial justice.
