Accurate and timely estimation of soybean emergence at the plot scale using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote sensing imagery is essential for germplasm evaluation in breeding programs, where breeders prioritize overall plot-scale emergence rates over subimage-based counts. This study proposes PlotCounter, a deep learning regression model based on the TasselNetV2++ architecture, designed for plot-scale soybean seedling counting. It employs a patch-based training strategy combined with full-plot validation to achieve reliable performance with limited breeding plot data. To incorporate additional agronomic information, PlotCounter is extended into a multitask learning framework (MTL-PlotCounter) that integrates sowing metadata such as variety, number of seeds per hole, and sowing density as auxiliary classification tasks. RGB images of 54 breeding plots were captured in 2023 using a DJI Mavic 2 Pro UAV and processed into an orthomosaic for model development and evaluation, showing effective performance. PlotCounter achieves a root mean square error (RMSE) of 6.98 and a relative RMSE (rRMSE) of 6.93%. The variety-integrated MTL-PlotCounter, V-MTL-PlotCounter, performs the best, with relative reductions of 8.74% in RMSE and 3.03% in rRMSE compared to PlotCounter, and outperforms representative YOLO-based models. Additionally, both PlotCounter and V-MTL-PlotCounter are deployed on a web-based platform, enabling users to upload images via an interactive interface, automatically count seedlings, and analyze plot-scale emergence, powered by a multimodal large language model. This study highlights the potential of integrating UAV remote sensing, agronomic metadata, specialized deep learning models, and multimodal large language models for advanced crop monitoring. Timely and accurate identification of surface damage in hydraulic structures is essential for maintaining structural integrity and ensuring operational safety. Traditional manual inspections are time-consuming, labor-intensive, and prone to subjectivity, especially for large-scale or inaccessible infrastructure. Leveraging advancements in aerial imaging, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) enable efficient acquisition of high-resolution visual data across expansive hydraulic environments. However, existing deep learning (DL) models often lack architectural adaptations for the visual complexities of UAV imagery, including low-texture contrast, noise interference, and irregular crack patterns. To address these challenges, this study proposes a lightweight, robust, and high-precision segmentation framework, called LFPA-EAM-Fast-SCNN, specifically designed for pixel-level damage detection in UAV-captured images of hydraulic concrete surfaces. The developed DL-based model integrates an enhanced Fast-SCNN backbone for efficient feature extraction, a Lightweight Feature Pyramid Attention (LFPA) module for multi-scale context enhancement, and an Edge Attention Module (EAM) for refined boundary localization. The experimental results on a custom UAV-based dataset show that the proposed damage detection method achieves superior performance, with a precision of 0.949, a recall of 0.892, an F1 score of 0.906, and an IoU of 87.92%, outperforming U-Net, Attention U-Net, SegNet, DeepLab v3+, I-ST-UNet, and SegFormer. Additionally, it reaches a real-time inference speed of 56.31 FPS, significantly surpassing other models. The experimental results demonstrate the proposed framework’s strong generalization capability and robustness under varying noise levels and damage scenarios, underscoring its suitability for scalable, automated surface damage assessment in UAV-based remote sensing of civil infrastructure. The unique characteristics of desert vegetation, such as different leaf morphology, discrete canopy structures, sparse and uneven distribution, etc., pose significant challenges for remote sensing-based estimation of fractional vegetation cover (FVC). The Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) system can accurately distinguish vegetation patches, extract weak vegetation signals, and navigate through complex terrain, making it suitable for applications in small-scale FVC extraction. In this study, we selected the floodplain fan with Caragana korshinskii Kom as the constructive species in Hatengtaohai National Nature Reserve, Bayannur, Inner Mongolia, China, as our study area. We investigated the remote sensing extraction method of desert sparse vegetation cover by placing samples across three gradients: the top, middle, and edge of the fan. We then acquired UAV multispectral images; evaluated the applicability of various vegetation indices (VIs) using methods such as supervised classification, linear regression models, and machine learning; and explored the feasibility and stability of multiple machine learning models in this region. Our results indicate the following: (1) We discovered that the multispectral vegetation index is superior to the visible vegetation index and more suitable for FVC extraction in vegetation-sparse desert regions. (2) By comparing five machine learning regression models, it was found that the XGBoost and KNN models exhibited relatively lower estimation performance in the study area. The spatial distribution of plots appeared to influence the stability of the SVM model when estimating fractional vegetation cover (FVC). In contrast, the RF and LASSO models demonstrated robust stability across both training and testing datasets. Notably, the RF model achieved the best inversion performance (R2 = 0.876, RMSE = 0.020, MAE = 0.016), indicating that RF is one of the most suitable models for retrieving FVC in naturally sparse desert vegetation. This study provides a valuable contribution to the limited existing research on remote sensing-based estimation of FVC and characterization of spatial heterogeneity in small-scale desert sparse vegetation ecosystems dominated by a single species. Chlorophyll plays a vital role in wheat growth and fertilization management. Accurate and efficient estimation of chlorophyll content is crucial for providing a scientific foundation for precision agricultural management. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), characterized by high flexibility, spatial resolution, and operational efficiency, have emerged as effective tools for estimating chlorophyll content in wheat. Although multi-source data derived from UAV-based multispectral imagery have shown potential for wheat chlorophyll estimation, the importance of multi-source deep feature fusion has not been adequately addressed. Therefore, this study aims to estimate wheat chlorophyll content by integrating spectral and textural features extracted from UAV multispectral imagery, in conjunction with partial least squares regression (PLSR), random forest regression (RFR), deep neural network (DNN), and a novel multi-source deep feature neural network (MDFNN) proposed in this research. The results demonstrate the following: (1) Except for the RFR model, models based on texture features exhibit superior accuracy compared to those based on spectral features. Furthermore, the estimation accuracy achieved by fusing spectral and texture features is significantly greater than that obtained using a single type of data. (2) The MDFNN proposed in this study outperformed other models in chlorophyll content estimation, with an R2 of 0.850, an RMSE of 5.602, and an RRMSE of 15.76%. Compared to the second-best model, the DNN (R2 = 0.799, RMSE = 6.479, RRMSE = 18.23%), the MDFNN achieved a 6.4% increase in R2, and 13.5% reductions in both RMSE and RRMSE. (3) The MDFNN exhibited strong robustness and adaptability across varying years, wheat varieties, and nitrogen application levels. The findings of this study offer important insights into UAV-based remote sensing applications for estimating wheat chlorophyll under field conditions. Full article

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Remote Sensing (UAV-RS) has emerged as a transformative technology in high-resolution Earth observation, with widespread applications in precision agriculture, ecological monitoring, and disaster response. However, a systematic understanding of its scientific evolution and structural bottlenecks remains lacking. This study collected 4985 peer-reviewed articles from the Web of Science Core Collection and conducted a comprehensive scientometric analysis using CiteSpace v.6.2.R4, Origin 2022, and Excel. We examined publication trends, country/institutional collaboration networks, keyword co-occurrence clusters, and emerging research fronts. Results reveal an exponential growth in UAV-RS research since 2015, dominated by application-driven studies. Hotspots include vegetation indices, structure from motion modeling, and deep learning integration. However, foundational challenges—such as platform endurance, sensor coordination, and data standardization—remain underexplored. The global collaboration network exhibits a “strong hubs, weak bridges” pattern, limiting transnational knowledge integration. This review highlights the imbalance between surface-level innovation and deep technological maturity and calls for a paradigm shift from fragmented application responses to integrated systems development. Our findings provide strategic insights for researchers, policymakers, and funding agencies to guide the next stage of UAV-RS evolution. Full article

Accurate estimation aboveground biomass (AGB) in winter wheat is crucial for yield assessment but remains challenging to achieve non-destructively. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based remote sensing offers a promising solution at the plot level. Traditional field sampling methods, such as random plant selection or full-quadrat harvesting, are labor intensive and may introduce substantial errors compared to the canopy-level estimates obtained from UAV imagery. This study proposes a novel method using Fractional Vegetation Coverage (FVC) to adjust field-sampled AGB to per-plant biomass, enhancing the accuracy of AGB estimation using UAV imagery. Correlation analysis and Variance Inflation Factor (VIF) were employed for feature selection, and estimation models for leaf, spike, stem, and total AGB were constructed using Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Neural Network (NN) models. The aim was to evaluate the performance of multimodal data in estimating winter wheat leaves, spikes, stems, and total AGB. Results demonstrated that (1) FVC-adjusted per-plant biomass significantly improved correlations with most indicators, particularly during the filling stage, when the correlation between leaf biomass and NDVI increased by 56.1%; (2) RF and NN models outperformed SVM, with the optimal accuracies being R2 = 0.709, RMSE = 0.114 g for RF, R2 = 0.66, RMSE = 0.08 g for NN, and R2 = 0.557, RMSE = 0.117 g for SVM. Notably, the RF model achieved the highest prediction accuracy for leaf biomass during the flowering stage (R2 = 0.709, RMSE = 0.114); (3) among different water treatments, the R2 values of water and drought treatments were higher 0.723 and 0.742, respectively, indicating strong adaptability. This study provides an economically effective method for monitoring winter wheat growth in the field, contributing to improved agricultural productivity and fertilization management. Full article

The integration of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote sensing and deep learning has emerged as a highly effective strategy for inventorying forest resources. However, the spatiotemporal variability of forest environments and the scarcity of annotated data hinder the performance of conventional supervised deep-learning models. To overcome these challenges, this study has developed efficient tree (ET), a semi-supervised tree detector designed for forest scenes. ET employed an enhanced YOLO model (YOLO-Tree) as a base detector and incorporated a teacher–student semi-supervised learning (SSL) framework based on pseudo-labeling, effectively leveraging abundant unlabeled data to bolster model robustness. The results revealed that SSL significantly improved outcomes in scenarios with sparse labeled data, specifically when the annotation proportion was below 50%. Additionally, employing overlapping cropping as a data augmentation strategy mitigated instability during semi-supervised training under conditions of limited sample size. Notably, introducing unlabeled data from external sites enhances the accuracy and cross-site generalization of models trained on diverse datasets, achieving impressive results with F1, mAP50, and mAP50-95 scores of 0.979, 0.992, and 0.871, respectively. In conclusion, this study highlights the potential of combining UAV-based RGB imagery with SSL to advance tree species identification in heterogeneous forests. Full article

Cross-view geo-localization (CVGL) presents significant challenges due to the drastic variations in perspective and scene layout between unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and satellite images. Existing methods have made certain advancements in extracting local features from images. However, they exhibit limitations in modeling the interactions among local features and fall short in aligning cross-view representations accurately. To address these issues, we propose a Multi-Scale Cascade and Feature Adaptive Alignment (MCFA) network, which consists of a Multi-Scale Cascade Module (MSCM) and a Feature Adaptive Alignment Module (FAAM). The MSCM captures the features of the target’s adjacent regions and enhances the model’s robustness by learning key region information through association and fusion. The FAAM, with its dynamically weighted feature alignment module, adaptively adjusts feature differences across different viewpoints, achieving feature alignment between drone and satellite images. Our method achieves state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance on two public datasets, University-1652 and SUES-200. In generalization experiments, our model outperforms existing SOTA methods, with an average improvement of 1.52% in R@1 and 2.09% in AP, demonstrating its effectiveness and strong generalization in cross-view geo-localization tasks. Transpiration is the dominant process driving water loss in crops, significantly influencing their growth, development, and yield. Efficient monitoring of transpiration rate (Tr) is crucial for evaluating crop physiological status and optimizing water management strategies. The three-temperature (3T) model has potential for rapid estimation of transpiration rates, but its application to low-altitude remote sensing has not yet been further investigated. To evaluate the performance of 3T model based on land surface temperature (LST) and canopy temperature (TC) in estimating transpiration rate, this study utilized an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with a thermal infrared (TIR) camera to capture TIR images of summer maize during the nodulation-irrigation stage under four different moisture treatments, from which LST was extracted. The Gaussian Hidden Markov Random Field (GHMRF) model was applied to segment the TIR images, facilitating the extraction of TC. Finally, an improved 3T model incorporating fractional vegetation coverage (FVC) was proposed. The findings of the study demonstrate that: (1) The GHMRF model offers an effective approach for TIR image segmentation. The mechanism of thermal TIR segmentation implemented by the GHMRF model is explored. The results indicate that when the potential energy function parameter β value is 0.1, the optimal performance is provided. (2) The feasibility of utilizing UAV-based TIR remote sensing in conjunction with the 3T model for estimating Tr has been demonstrated, showing a significant correlation between the measured and the estimated transpiration rate (Tr-3TC), derived from TC data obtained through the segmentation and processing of TIR imagery. The correlation coefficients (r) were 0.946 in 2022 and 0.872 in 2023. (3) The improved 3T model has demonstrated its ability to enhance the estimation accuracy of crop Tr rapidly and effectively, exhibiting a robust correlation with Tr-3TC. The correlation coefficients for the two observed years are 0.991 and 0.989, respectively, while the model maintains low RMSE of 0.756 mmol H2O m−2 s−1 and 0.555 mmol H2O m−2 s−1 for the respective years, indicating strong interannual stability. Precise extraction of rural settlements in alpine regions is critical for geographic data production, rural development, and spatial optimization. However, existing deep learning models are hindered by insufficient datasets and suboptimal algorithm structures, resulting in blurred boundaries and inadequate extraction accuracy. Therefore, this study uses high-resolution unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote sensing images to construct a specialized dataset for the extraction of rural settlements in alpine mountainous areas, while introducing an innovative shadow mitigation technique that integrates multiple spectral characteristics. This methodology effectively addresses the challenges posed by intense shadows in settlements and environmental occlusions common in mountainous terrain analysis. Based on the comparative experiments with existing deep learning models, the Swin Transformer was selected as the baseline model. Building upon this, the Feature Fusion Swin Transformer (FF-SwinT) model was constructed by optimizing the data processing, loss function, and multi-view feature fusion. Finally, we rigorously evaluated it through ablation studies, generalization tests and large-scale image application experiments. The results show that the FF-SwinT has improved in many indicators compared with the traditional Swin Transformer, and the recognition results have clear edges and strong integrity. These results suggest that the FF-SwinT establishes a novel framework for rural settlement extraction in alpine mountain regions, which is of great significance for regional spatial optimization and development policy formulation. Due to the limitations of the sowing machine performance and rice seed germination rates, missing seedlings inevitably occur after rice is sown in large fields. This phenomenon has a direct impact on the rice yield. In the field environment, the existing methods for detecting missing seedlings based on unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote sensing images often have unsatisfactory effects. Therefore, to enable the fast and accurate detection of missing rice seedlings and facilitate subsequent reseeding, this study proposes a UAV remote-sensing-based method for detecting missing rice seedlings in large fields. The proposed method uses an improved PCERT-DETR model to detect rice seedlings and missing seedlings in UAV remote sensing images of large fields. The experimental results show that PCERT-DETR achieves an optimal performance on the self-constructed dataset, with an mean average precision (mAP) of 81.2%, precision (P) of 82.8%, recall (R) of 78.3%, and F1-score (F1) of 80.5%. The model’s parameter count is only 21.4 M and its FLOPs reach 66.6 G, meeting real-time detection requirements. Compared to the baseline network models, PCERT-DETR improves the P, R, F1, and mAP by 15.0, 1.2, 8.5, and 6.8 percentage points, respectively. Furthermore, the performance evaluation experiments were carried out through ablation experiments, comparative detection model experiments and heat map visualization analysis, indicating that the model has a strong detection performance on the test set. The results confirm that the proposed model can accurately detect the number of missing rice seedlings. This study provides accurate information on the number of missing seedlings for subsequent reseeding operations, thus contributing to the improvement of precision farming practices. Full article

Principal component analysis (PCA) is a widely applied multivariate statistical technique across scientific disciplines, with forestry being one of its most dynamic areas of use. Its primary strength lies in reducing data dimensionality and classifying parameters within complex ecological datasets. This study provides the first comprehensive bibliometric and literature review focused exclusively on PCA applications in forestry. A total of 96 articles published between 1993 and 2024 were analyzed using the Web of Science database and visualized using VOSviewer software, version 1.6.20. The bibliometric analysis revealed that the most active scientific fields were environmental sciences, forestry, and engineering, and the most frequently published journals were Forests and Sustainability. Contributions came from 198 authors across 44 countries, with China, Spain, and Brazil identified as leading contributors. PCA has been employed in a wide range of forestry applications, including species classification, biomass modeling, environmental impact assessment, and forest structure analysis. It is increasingly used to support decision-making in forest management, biodiversity conservation, and habitat evaluation. In recent years, emerging research has demonstrated innovative integrations of PCA with advanced technologies such as hyperspectral imaging, LiDAR, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and remote sensing platforms. These integrations have led to substantial improvements in forest fire detection, disease monitoring, and species discrimination. Furthermore, PCA has been combined with other analytical methods and machine learning models—including Lasso regression, support vector machines, and deep learning algorithms—resulting in enhanced data classification, feature extraction, and ecological modeling accuracy. These hybrid approaches underscore PCA’s adaptability and relevance in addressing contemporary challenges in forestry research. By systematically mapping the evolution, distribution, and methodological innovations associated with PCA, this study fills a critical gap in the literature. It offers a foundational reference for researchers and practitioners, highlighting both current trends and future directions for leveraging PCA in forest science and environmental monitoring. In this work, we propose a geolocation framework for distant ground targets integrating laser rangefinder sensors with multimodal visual servo control. By simulating binocular visual servo measurements through monocular visual servo tracking at fixed time intervals, our approach requires only single-session sensor attitude correction calibration to accurately geolocalize multiple targets during a single flight, which significantly enhances operational efficiency in multi-target geolocation scenarios. We design a step-convergent target geolocation optimization algorithm. By adjusting the step size and the scale factor of the cost function, we achieve fast accuracy convergence for different UAV reconnaissance modes, while maintaining the geolocation accuracy without divergence even when the laser ranging sensor is turned off for a short period. The experimental results show that through the UAV’s continuous reconnaissance measurements, the geolocalization error of remote ground targets based on our algorithm is less than 7 m for 3000 m, and less than 3.5 m for 1500 m. We have realized the fast and high-precision geolocalization of remote targets on the ground under the high-altitude reconnaissance of UAVs. Full article

In recent years, global agriculture has encountered several challenges exacerbated by the effects of changes in climate, such as extreme water shortages for irrigation and heat waves. Water-deficit stress adversely affects the morpho-physiology of numerous crops, including soybean (Glycine max L.), which is considered as promising crop in Bangladesh. Seaweed extract (SWE) has the potential to improve crop yield and alleviate the adverse effects of water-deficit stress. Remote and proximal sensing are also extensively utilized in estimating morpho-physiological traits owing to their cost-efficiency and non-destructive characteristics. The study was carried out to evaluate soybean morpho-physiological traits under the application of water extracts of Gracilaria tenuistipitata var. liui (red seaweed) with two varying irrigation water conditions (100% of total crop water requirement (TCWR) and 70% of TCWR). Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that among the four treatments, the 70% irrigation + 5% (v/v) SWE and the 100% irrigation treatments overlapped, indicating that the application of SWE effectively mitigated water-deficit stress in soybeans. This result demonstrates that the foliar application of 5% SWE enabled soybeans to achieve morpho-physiological performance comparable to that of fully irrigated plants while reducing irrigation water use by 30%. Based on Pearson’s correlation matrix, a simple linear regression model was used to ascertain the relationship between unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-derived vegetation indices and the field-measured physiological characteristics of soybean. The Normalized Difference Red Edge (NDRE) strongly correlated with stomatal conductance (R2 = 0.76), photosystem II efficiency (R2 = 0.78), maximum fluorescence (R2 = 0.64), and apparent transpiration rate (R2 = 0.69). The Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI) had the highest correlation with leaf relative water content (R2 = 0.87), the Blue Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (bNDVI) with steady-state fluorescence (R2 = 0.56) and vapor pressure deficit (R2 = 0.74), and the Green Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (gNDVI) with chlorophyll content (R2 = 0.73). Our results demonstrate how UAV and physiological data can be integrated to improve precision soybean farming and support sustainable soybean production under water-deficit stress. Full article

Residual dry matter (RDM) is a term used in rangeland management to describe the non-photosynthetic plant material left on the soil surface at the end of the growing season. RDM measurements are used by agencies and conservation entities for managing grazing and fire fuels. Measuring the RDM using traditional methods is labor-intensive, costly, and subjective, making consistent sampling challenging. Previous studies have assessed the use of multispectral remote sensing to estimate the RDM, but with limited success across space and time. The existing approaches may be improved through the use of spectroscopic (hyperspectral) sensors, capable of capturing the cellulose and lignin present in dry grass, as well as Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-mounted Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensors, capable of capturing centimeter-scale 3D vegetation structures. Here, we evaluate the relationships between the RDM and spectral and LiDAR data across the Jack and Laura Dangermond Preserve (Santa Barbara County, CA, USA), which uses grazing and prescribed fire for rangeland management. The spectral indices did not correlate with the RDM (R2 < 0.1), likely due to complete areal coverage with dense grass. The LiDAR canopy height models performed better for all the samples (R2 = 0.37), with much stronger performance (R2 = 0.81) when using a stratified model to predict the RDM in plots with predominantly standing (as opposed to laying) vegetation. This study demonstrates the potential of UAV LiDAR for direct RDM quantification where vegetation is standing upright, which could help improve RDM mapping and management for rangelands in California and beyond.
