Given the overlap of epidemiological and clinical presentations of both rickettsioses and malaria infections, diagnostic testing where malaria is confirmed or excluded, without subsequent rickettsial testing, specifically in the case of Plasmodium vivax or P. ovale infection, may mask the possibility of relapse. A lack of clinical suspicion of co-infections, absence of knowledge on the geographic distribution of diseases, and lack of availability of point-of-care diagnostic testing for other tropical diseases can often lead to missed diagnosis or misdiagnosis of common tropical infections, including rickettsioses. We herein describe a case of confirmed intercurrent rickettsial and P. vivax infection, with the former potentially triggering a relapse of the latter in a febrile traveler returning to Canada from South America, and review the literature on tropical coinfections in returning travelers. A multi-objective optimal trajectory planning method is proposed for manipulators in this paper to enhance motion efficiency and to reduce component wear while ensuring motion smoothness. The trajectory is initially interpolated in the joint space by using quintic non-uniform B-splines with virtual points, achieving the C4 continuity of joint motion and satisfying dynamic, kinematic, geometric, synchronization, and boundary constraints. The interpolation reformulates the trajectory planning problem into an optimization problem, where the time intervals between desired adjacent waypoints serve as variables. Travelling time and the integral of the squared jerk along the entire trajectories comprise the multi-objective functions. A constrained multi-objective dream optimization algorithm is designed to solve the time–jerk optimal trajectory planning problem and generate Pareto solutions for optimized trajectories. Simulations conducted on 6-DOF manipulators validate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method in comparison with existing typical trajectory planning methods. Full article

Intelligent driving technology is expected to reshape urban transportation, but its promotion is hindered by user acceptance challenges and diverse technical routes. This study proposes a comprehensive user acceptance evaluation framework for intelligent driving from the perspective of value engineering (VE). The novelty of this framework lies in three aspects: (1) It unifies behavioral theory and utility theory under the value engineering framework, and it extracts key indicators such as safety, travel efficiency, trust, comfort, and cost, thus addressing the issue of the lack of integration between subjective and objective factors in previous studies. (2) It establishes a systematic mapping mechanism from technical solutions to evaluation indicators, filling the gap of insufficient targeting at different technical routes in the existing literature. (3) It quantifies acceptance differences via VE’s core formula of V = F/C, overcoming the ambiguity of non-technical evaluation in prior research. A case study comparing single-vehicle intelligence vs. collaborative intelligence and different sensor combinations (vision-only, map fusion, and lidar fusion) shows that collaborative intelligence and vision-based solutions offer higher comprehensive acceptance due to balanced functionality and cost. This framework guides enterprises in technical strategy planning and assists governments in formulating industrial policies by quantifying acceptance differences across technical routes. Full article

Accurately predicting the next location of urban individuals is a central issue in human mobility research. Human mobility exhibits diverse patterns, requiring the integration of spatiotemporal contexts for location prediction. In this context, multi-view learning has become a prominent method in location prediction. Despite notable advances, current methods still face challenges in effectively capturing non-spatial proximity of regional preferences, complex temporal periodicity, and the ambiguity of location semantics. To address these challenges, we propose a representation-enhanced multi-view learning network (ReMVL-Net) for location prediction. Specifically, we propose a community-enhanced spatial representation that transcends geographic proximity to capture latent mobility patterns. In addition, we introduce a multi-granular enhanced temporal representation to model the multi-level periodicity of human mobility and design a rule-based semantic recognition method to enrich location semantics. We evaluate the proposed model using mobile phone data from Fuzhou. Experimental results show a 2.94% improvement in prediction accuracy over the best-performing baseline. Further analysis reveals that community space plays a key role in narrowing the candidate location set. Moreover, we observe that prediction difficulty is strongly influenced by individual travel behaviors, with more regular activity patterns being easier to predict. Full article

A rotating imperfect ring resonator of the gyroscope is modeled by a rotating thin ring with evenly distributed point masses. The free response of the rotating ring structure at constant speed is investigated, including the steady elastic deformation and wave response. The dynamic equations are formulated by using Hamilton’s principle in the ground-fixed coordinates. The coordinate transformation is applied to facilitate the solution of the steady deformation, and the displacements and tangential tension for the deformation are calculated by the perturbation method. Employing Galerkin’s method, the governing equation of the free vibration is casted in matrix differential operator form after the separation of the real and imaginary parts with the inextensional assumption. The natural frequencies are calculated through the eigenvalue analysis, and the numerical results are obtained. The effects of the point masses on the natural frequencies of the forward and backward traveling wave curves of different orders are discussed, especially on the measurement accuracy of gyroscopes for different cases. In the ground-fixed coordinates, the frequency splitting results in a crosspoint of the natural frequencies of the forward and backward traveling waves. The finite element method is applied to demonstrate the validity and accuracy of the model. Full article

This study investigates the factors influencing school trip mode choice among senior high school students in the Chiang Rai urban area, Chiang Rai, Thailand, under normal and adverse weather conditions. Utilizing data from 472 students across six extra-large urban schools, a Multinomial Logit (MNL) regression model was applied to examine the effects of socio-demographic attributes, household vehicle ownership, travel distance, and spatial variables on mode selection. The results revealed notable modal shifts during adverse weather, with motorcycle usage decreasing and private vehicle reliance increasing, while school bus usage remained stable, highlighting its role as a resilient transport option. Car ownership emerged as a strong enabler of modal flexibility, whereas students with limited access to private transport demonstrated reduced adaptability. Additionally, increased waiting and travel times during adverse conditions underscored infrastructure and service vulnerabilities, particularly for mid-distance travelers. The findings suggest an urgent need for transport policies that promote inclusive and climate-resilient mobility systems, particularly in the context of Chiang Rai, including expanded school bus services, improved first-mile connectivity, and enhanced pedestrian infrastructure. This study contributes to the literature by addressing environmental variability in school travel behavior and offers actionable insights for sustainable transport planning in secondary cities and border regions. In the present paper, a mathematical analysis of the Gardner equation with varying coefficients has been performed to give a more realistic model of physical phenomena, especially in regards to plasma physics. First, a Lie symmetry analysis was carried out, as a result of which a symmetry classification following the different representations of the variable coefficients was systematically derived. The reduced ordinary differential equation obtained is solved using the power-series method and solutions to the equation are represented graphically to give an idea of their dynamical behavior. Moreover, a fully connected neural network has been included as an efficient computation method to deal with the complexity of the reduced equation, by using traveling-wave transformation. The validity and correctness of the solutions provided by the neural networks have been rigorously tested and the solutions provided by the neural networks have been thoroughly compared with those generated by the Runge–Kutta method, which is a conventional and well-recognized numerical method. The impact of a variation in the loss function of different coefficients has also been discussed, and it has also been found that the dispersive coefficient affects the convergence rate of the loss contribution considerably compared to the other coefficients. The results of the current work can be used to improve knowledge on the nonlinear dynamics of waves in plasma physics. They also show how efficient it is to combine the approaches, which consists in the use of analytical and semi-analytical methods and methods based on neural networks, to solve nonlinear differential equations with variable coefficients of a complex nature. Railway systems occupy a predominant role in urban transport, providing efficient, high-capacity mobility. Progress in rail transport allows fast traveling, whilst environmental concerns and CO2 emissions are on the rise. The integration of railway systems with renewable energy source (RES)-based stations presents a promising avenue to improve the sustainability, reliability, and efficiency of urban transport networks. A storage system is needed to both ensure a continuous power supply and meet train demand at the station. Batteries (BTs) offer high energy density, while supercapacitors (SCs) offer both a large number of charge and discharge cycles, and high-power density. This paper proposes a hybrid RES (photovoltaic and wind), combined with batteries and supercapacitors constituting the hybrid energy storage system (HESS). One major drawback of trains is the long charging time required in stations, so they have been fitted with SCs to allow them to charge up quickly. A new fuzzy energy management strategy (F-EMS) is proposed. This supervision strategy optimizes the power flow between renewable energy sources, HESS, and trains. DC bus voltage regulation is involved, maintaining BT and SC charging levels within acceptable ranges. The simulation results, carried out using MATLAB/Simulink, demonstrate the effectiveness of the suggested fuzzy energy management strategy for various production conditions and train demand. Economic growth, especially in emerging economies, has altered the composition of international tourism. It is therefore essential to possess the skills necessary to understand the influence of culture on human behaviour, thereby enabling an appropriate response to the traveller. This research aims to develop a tool for identifying openness, flexibility, awareness, and intercultural preparedness. It focuses on the metacognitive and cognitive aspects of cultural intelligence that shape the development of empathy in customer service staff in hotels in Quintana Roo. The variables were validated and incorporated into a quantitative study using multivariate analysis and inferential statistics. A sample of 77 questionnaires was analysed using simple random sampling under a proportional design. Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) was employed as a discriminatory technique to identify the most significant independent variables. These were subsequently entered as regressors into ordinal logistic regression (OLR), along with age and work experience, in order to estimate the probabilities associated with each level of the dependent variable. The results indicated that age had minimal influence on the metacognitive and cognitive variables, whereas years of experience among tourism staff exerted a significant effect. Full article

The heterogeneous automatic guided vehicle (AGV) system, composed of several AGVs with different load capability and handling function, has good flexibility and agility to operational requirements. Accurate task travel time prediction (T3P) is vital for the efficient operation of heterogeneous AGV systems. However, T3P remains a challenging problem due to individual task correlations and dynamic changes in model input/output dimensions. To address these challenges, a biomimetics-inspired learning framework based on a radial basis function (RBF) neural network with an improved mayfly algorithm and a selective update strategy (IMA-SURBF) is proposed. Firstly, a T3P model is constructed by using travel-influencing factors as input and task travel time as output of the RBF neural network, where the input/output dimension is determined dynamically. Secondly, the improved mayfly algorithm (IMA), a biomimetic metaheuristic method, is adopted to optimize the initial parameters of the RBF neural network, while a selective update strategy is designed for parameter updates. Finally, simulation experiments on model design, parameter initialization, and comparison with deep learning-based models are conducted in a complex assembly line scenario to validate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method. One of the fundamental goals of contemporary mobility is to optimize transport processes in urban areas. The solution in this area seems to be the implementation of the idea of sustainable transport systems based on the Smart City concept. The article presents a case study—an assessment of the possibilities of changing mobility habits based on the idea of sustainable urban transport, taking into account the criterion of energy consumption of individual means of transport. The analyses are based on a comparison of selected means of transport occurring in the urban environment according to several key parameters for the optimization and efficiency of transport processes, i.e., cost, time, travel comfort, and impact on the natural environment, while simultaneously linking them to the criterion of energy consumption of individual means of transport. The analyzed parameters currently constitute the most important group of challenges in the area of shaping and planning optimal and sustainable urban transport. The presented research was used to indicate the connections between various areas of optimization of the transport process and the energy efficiency of individual modes of transport. Analyses have shown that the least time-consuming process of urban mobility is associated with the highest level of CO2 emissions and, at the same time, the highest level of energy efficiency. However, combining public transport with other means of transport can meet most of the transport expectations of city residents, also in terms of energy optimization. The research results presented in the article can contribute to the creation of a strategy for the development of the transport network based on the postulates of increasing the optimization and efficiency of individual means of transport in urban areas. At the same time, recognizing the criterion of energy intensity of means of transport as leading in the development of sustainable urban mobility. Thus, confirming the important role of existing transport systems in the process of shaping and planning sustainable urban mobility in accordance with the idea of Smart City. Full article

The structural design of rail vehicle bodies significantly influences rail vehicle performance, passenger comfort, and operational efficiency. This study presents a comparative analysis of three key concepts of a rail vehicle body, namely a differential, an integral, and a hybrid structure, with a focus on their structural principles, material utilization, and implications for manufacturability and maintenance. Three rail vehicle body variants were developed, each incorporating a low-floor configuration to enhance accessibility and interior layout flexibility. The research explores the suitable placement of technical components such as a power unit and an air-conditioning system, and it evaluates interior layouts aimed at maximizing both passenger capacity and their travelling comfort. Key features, including door and window technologies, thermal comfort solutions, and seating arrangements, are also analyzed. The study emphasizes the importance of compromises between structural stiffness, reparability, production complexity, and passenger-oriented design considerations. A part of the research includes a proposal of three variants of a rail vehicle body frame, together with their strength analysis by means of the finite element method. These analyses identified that the maximal permissible stresses for the individual versions of the frame were not exceeded. Findings contribute to the development of more efficient, accessible, and sustainable regional passenger rail vehicles. Full article

Urban areas are facing increasing traffic congestion, pollution, and infrastructure strain. Traditional urban transportation systems are often fragmented. They require users to plan, pay, and travel across multiple disconnected services. Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) integrates these services into a single digital platform, simplifying access and improving the user experience. This review critically examines the role of MaaS in fostering sustainable mobility ecosystems. MaaS aims to enhance user-friendliness, service variety, and sustainability by adopting a customer-centric approach to transportation. The findings reveal that successful MaaS systems consistently align with multimodal transport infrastructure, equitable access policies, and strong public-private partnerships. MaaS enhances the management of routes and traffic, effectively mitigating delays and congestion while concurrently reducing energy consumption and fuel usage. In this study, the authors examine MaaS as a new mobility paradigm for a sustainable transportation system in smart cities, observing the challenges and opportunities associated with its implementation. To assess the environmental impact, a sustainability index is calculated based on the use of different modes of transportation. Significant findings indicate that MaaS systems are proliferating in both quantity and complexity, increasingly integrating capabilities such as real-time multimodal planning, dynamic pricing, and personalized user profiles. We introduce a waypoint-based flow capture location model (WbFCLM) for siting facilities on networks with the objective of maximally capturing flows. The advantages of the waypoint-based formulation are that (1) demand is modeled along observed trajectories rather than assumed travel paths, and (2) demand is allowed to vary across geographic space. We demonstrate the WbFCLM using a test dataset derived from vehicle tracking data. Though solving the WbFCLM can require considerable computing power, it can be used to site facilities on networks where both flows and demand vary spatially. Full article

Autonomous vehicles (AVs) have emerged as a promising sustainable urban mobility solution, expected to lead to enhanced road safety, smoother traffic flows, less traffic congestion, improved accessibility, better energy utilization and environmental performance, as well as more efficient passenger and freight transportation, in terms of time and cost, due to better fleet management and platooning. However, challenges also arise, mostly related to data privacy, security and cyber-security, high acquisition and infrastructure costs, accident liability, even possible increased traffic congestion and air pollution due to induced travel demand. This paper presents the results of a survey conducted among 654 residents who experienced an autonomous bus (AB) service in the city of Trikala, Greece, in order to assess their willingness to use (WTU) and willingness to pay (WTP) for ABs, through testing a range of factors based on a literature review. Results useful to policy-makers were extracted, such as that the intention to use ABs was mostly shaped by psychological factors (e.g., users’ perceptions of usefulness and safety, and trust in the service provider), while WTU seemed to be positively affected by previous experience in using ABs. In contrast, sociodemographic factors were found to have very little effect on the intention to use ABs, while apart from personal utility, users’ perceptions of how autonomous driving will improve the overall life standards in the study area also mattered.
