Background/Objectives: Digital pathology has the potential to revolutionize pathology diagnostics, especially in geo-graphically isolated and underserved regions. By leveraging technology, telepathology, and integration with computer-aided diagnostic tools, digital pathology can improve access to prompt and accurate diagnostics. Methods: Our key steps to implementing digital pathology and transitioning operations to a digital network are assessing existing infrastructure, identifying gaps in connectivity and resources, and creating a workflow tailored to the needs of the healthcare system. Results: We present an approach of implementing digital pathology in Timmins, Northern Ontario, Canada, focusing on addressing regional disparities and the improvements that come alongside utilizing digital pathology. Our results show that digital pathology can provide prompt, efficient and better-quality diagnostic services to rural and un-deserved areas, improving patient care and outcomes. It also represents a cost-effective option with savings from eliminating travel costs, courier costs and additional operational efficiencies. Conclusions: Implementing digital pathology in rural settings presented with challenges related to infrastructure, technical abilities, workforce readiness, cost and other aspects involved in transitioning from traditional microscopy to a fully digital pathway. Digital pathology systems can help ensuring seamless data flow and improving overall healthcare delivery. Telepathology also allows pathologists to provide diagnostic services from a distance, which is particularly beneficial in areas with a shortage of pathologists. Full article

For the last few decades, the use of High-Speed Trains (HSTs) has been growing rapidly in various parts of the world. Despite rapid global expansion, many HST projects fail due to demand overestimation and cost overruns. This study analyzes factors influencing HST demand in Indonesia, aiming to identify impactful determinants from user perspectives. Employing a quantitative cross-sectional approach, this research utilized questionnaires distributed to users of different modes of transportation in the Jakarta–Bandung area, including trains, buses, travel services, and private cars. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) via Lisrel software was used to analyze the data. The results indicate that Transit-Oriented Developments (TOD) and new urban areas significantly increase HST demand by facilitating urban growth and development. Additionally, supporting infrastructure and external factors such as road accessibility, parking availability, shuttle services, and environmental integration are pivotal in shaping commuter preferences. Although factors such as safety, comfort, and reliability are important, they alone may not be adequate to persuade consumers to use high-speed trains for their travel. Full article

Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) and Group Rapid Transit (GRT) are classes of fully automated public transport systems, where passengers can travel in small vehicles on an interconnected, grade-separated network of guideways, non-stop, from origin to destination. PRT and GRT are considered sustainable as they are low-emission and able to attract car drivers. The parameterized cost modeling framework developed in this paper has the advantage that profitability of different PRT/GRT systems can be rapidly verified in a transparent way and in function of a variety of relevant system parameters. This framework may contribute to a more transparent, rapid, and low-cost evaluation of PRT/GRT schemes for planning and decision-making purposes. The main innovation is the introduction of the “peak hour network saturation” S: the number of vehicles in circulation during peak hour divided by the maximum number of vehicles running at line speed with minimum time headways. It is an index that aggregates the main uncertainties in the planning process, namely the demand level relative to the supply level. Furthermore, a maximum S can be estimated for a PRT/GRT project, even without a detailed demand estimation. The profit per trip is analytically derived based on S and a series of more certain parameters, such as fares, capital and maintenance costs, daily demand curve, empty vehicle share, and physical properties of the system. To demonstrate the ability of the framework to analyze profitability in function of various parameters, we apply the methods to a single vehicle PRT, a platooned PRT, and a mixed PRT/GRT. The results show that PRT services with trip length proportional fares could be profitable already for S>0.25. The PRT capacity, profitability, and robustness to tripled infrastructure costs can be increased by vehicle platooning or GRT service during peak hours. Full article

Intelligent driving technology is expected to reshape urban transportation, but its promotion is hindered by user acceptance challenges and diverse technical routes. This study proposes a comprehensive user acceptance evaluation framework for intelligent driving from the perspective of value engineering (VE). The novelty of this framework lies in three aspects: (1) It unifies behavioral theory and utility theory under the value engineering framework, and it extracts key indicators such as safety, travel efficiency, trust, comfort, and cost, thus addressing the issue of the lack of integration between subjective and objective factors in previous studies. (2) It establishes a systematic mapping mechanism from technical solutions to evaluation indicators, filling the gap of insufficient targeting at different technical routes in the existing literature. (3) It quantifies acceptance differences via VE’s core formula of V = F/C, overcoming the ambiguity of non-technical evaluation in prior research. A case study comparing single-vehicle intelligence vs. collaborative intelligence and different sensor combinations (vision-only, map fusion, and lidar fusion) shows that collaborative intelligence and vision-based solutions offer higher comprehensive acceptance due to balanced functionality and cost. This framework guides enterprises in technical strategy planning and assists governments in formulating industrial policies by quantifying acceptance differences across technical routes. Full article

One of the fundamental goals of contemporary mobility is to optimize transport processes in urban areas. The solution in this area seems to be the implementation of the idea of sustainable transport systems based on the Smart City concept. The article presents a case study—an assessment of the possibilities of changing mobility habits based on the idea of sustainable urban transport, taking into account the criterion of energy consumption of individual means of transport. The analyses are based on a comparison of selected means of transport occurring in the urban environment according to several key parameters for the optimization and efficiency of transport processes, i.e., cost, time, travel comfort, and impact on the natural environment, while simultaneously linking them to the criterion of energy consumption of individual means of transport. The analyzed parameters currently constitute the most important group of challenges in the area of shaping and planning optimal and sustainable urban transport. The presented research was used to indicate the connections between various areas of optimization of the transport process and the energy efficiency of individual modes of transport. Analyses have shown that the least time-consuming process of urban mobility is associated with the highest level of CO2 emissions and, at the same time, the highest level of energy efficiency. However, combining public transport with other means of transport can meet most of the transport expectations of city residents, also in terms of energy optimization. The research results presented in the article can contribute to the creation of a strategy for the development of the transport network based on the postulates of increasing the optimization and efficiency of individual means of transport in urban areas. At the same time, recognizing the criterion of energy intensity of means of transport as leading in the development of sustainable urban mobility. Thus, confirming the important role of existing transport systems in the process of shaping and planning sustainable urban mobility in accordance with the idea of Smart City. Full article

Autonomous vehicles (AVs) have emerged as a promising sustainable urban mobility solution, expected to lead to enhanced road safety, smoother traffic flows, less traffic congestion, improved accessibility, better energy utilization and environmental performance, as well as more efficient passenger and freight transportation, in terms of time and cost, due to better fleet management and platooning. However, challenges also arise, mostly related to data privacy, security and cyber-security, high acquisition and infrastructure costs, accident liability, even possible increased traffic congestion and air pollution due to induced travel demand. This paper presents the results of a survey conducted among 654 residents who experienced an autonomous bus (AB) service in the city of Trikala, Greece, in order to assess their willingness to use (WTU) and willingness to pay (WTP) for ABs, through testing a range of factors based on a literature review. Results useful to policy-makers were extracted, such as that the intention to use ABs was mostly shaped by psychological factors (e.g., users’ perceptions of usefulness and safety, and trust in the service provider), while WTU seemed to be positively affected by previous experience in using ABs. In contrast, sociodemographic factors were found to have very little effect on the intention to use ABs, while apart from personal utility, users’ perceptions of how autonomous driving will improve the overall life standards in the study area also mattered. The growing popularity of Personal Light Electric Vehicles (PLEVs), such as e-scooters, has revolutionized urban mobility by offering compact, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly transportation solutions. However, safety concerns, including inadequate infrastructure, poor protective measures, and high accident rates, remain critical challenges. This paper presents the design and development of an innovative self-balancing microvehicle under the H2020 LEONARDO project, which aims to address these challenges through advanced engineering and user-centric design. The vehicle combines features of monowheels and e-scooters, integrating cutting-edge technologies to enhance safety, stability, and usability. The design adheres to European regulations, including Germany’s eKFV standards, and incorporates user preferences identified through representative online surveys of 1500 PLEV users. These preferences include improved handling on uneven surfaces, enhanced signaling capabilities, and reduced instability during maneuvers. The prototype features a lightweight composite structure reinforced with carbon fibers, a high-torque motorized front wheel, and multiple speed modes tailored to different conditions, such as travel in pedestrian areas, use by novice riders, and advanced users. Braking tests demonstrate deceleration values of up to 3.5 m/s2, comparable to PLEV market standards and exceeding regulatory minimums, while smooth acceleration ramps ensure rider stability and safety. Additional features, such as identification plates and weight-dependent motor control, enhance compliance with local traffic rules and prevent misuse. The vehicle’s design also addresses common safety concerns, such as curb navigation and signaling, by incorporating large-diameter wheels, increased ground clearance, and electrically operated direction indicators. Future upgrades include the addition of a second rear wheel for enhanced stability, skateboard-like rear axle modifications for improved maneuverability, and hybrid supercapacitors to minimize fire risks and extend battery life. With its focus on safety, regulatory compliance, and rider-friendly innovations, this microvehicle represents a significant advancement in promoting safe and sustainable urban mobility. Full article

At the Politecnica Salesiana University (UPS) in Guayaquil, Ecuador, urban mobility challenges were addressed with the aim of improving students’ quality of life and promoting sustainability. This study evaluated the technical, economic, and social feasibility of implementing a shared transportation (carpooling) system using a quantitative-descriptive approach. Surveys were applied to a stratified sample of 256 students to analyze transportation habits. Route planning was performed using ArcGIS software, and costs were calculated with Microsoft Excel. Social impact assessment involved focus groups and analysis of variables such as changes in mobility patterns, system acceptance, and perceived safety, comfort, and accessibility. Key indicators included the percentage of students willing to participate in the pilot (82.7%), satisfaction with travel time savings (85.7% fully satisfied), and positive perceptions of safety and comfort. The results suggest that the proposed system is not only economically viable but also widely accepted by students, contributing to reduced stress, travel time, and single-occupancy vehicle use. This study demonstrates the feasibility of shared transport in urban universities and provides a replicable model to guide sustainable mobility policies that improve safety, comfort, and efficiency in student commuting. Optimizing passenger train line planning is a complex task that involves balancing operational costs and passenger service quality. This study investigates the adjustment and optimization of train line plans to better align with passenger demand and operational constraints, while minimizing systematic costs. These costs include train operation expenses (e.g., line usage fees and station service fees), passenger travel costs, and hidden costs such as imbalances in station stops. Line usage fees refer to charges for using railway tracks, whereas station service fees cover services provided at train stations. The optimization process employs a Simulated Annealing Algorithm to adjust train compositions, capacity configurations, and stop patterns to better match passenger demand. The results indicate a 13.89% reduction in the objective function value, reflecting improved overall efficiency. Notably, most costs are reduced, including train operating costs and passenger travel costs. However, ticketing service fees—which are calculated as a percentage of passenger fare revenue—increased slightly due to additional backtracking in passenger travel paths, which raised the total fare collected. Overall, the optimization improves the operational performance of the train network, enhancing both efficiency and service quality. Full article

Localization of mobile robots is crucial for deploying robots in real-world applications such as search and rescue missions. This work aims to develop an accurate localization system applicable to swarm robots equipped only with low-cost monocular vision sensors and visual markers. The system is designed to operate in fully open spaces, without landmarks or support from positioning infrastructures. To achieve this, we propose a localization method based on equilateral triangular formations. By leveraging the geometric properties of equilateral triangles, the accurate two-dimensional position of each participating robot is estimated using one-dimensional lateral distance information between robots, which can be reliably and accurately obtained with a low-cost monocular vision sensor. Experimental and simulation results demonstrate that, as travel time increases, the positioning error of the proposed method becomes significantly smaller than that of a conventional dead-reckoning system, another low-cost localization approach applicable to open environments. Ride-pooling, as a sustainable mode of ride-hailing services, enables different riders to share a vehicle while traveling along similar routes. The COVID-19 pandemic led to the suspension of this service, but Transportation Network Companies (TNCs) such as Uber and Lyft resumed it after a significant delay following the lockdown. This raises the question of what determinants shape ride-pooling in the post-pandemic era and how they spatially influence shared ride-hailing compared to the pre-pandemic period. To address this gap, this study employs geospatial analysis and machine learning to examine the factors affecting ride-pooling trips in pre- and post-pandemic periods. Using over 66 million trip records from 2019 and 43 million from 2023, we observe a significant decline in shared trip adoption, from 16% to 2.91%. The results of an extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) model indicate a robust capture of non-linear relationships. The SHAP analysis reveals that the percentage of the non-white population is the dominant predictor in both years, although its influence weakened post-pandemic, with a breakpoint shift from 78% to 90%, suggesting reduced sharing in mid-range minority areas. Crime density and lower car ownership consistently correlate with higher sharing rates, while dense, transit-rich areas exhibit diminished reliance on shared trips. Our findings underscore the critical need to enhance transportation integration in underserved communities. Concurrently, they highlight the importance of encouraging shared ride adoption in well-served, high-demand areas where solo ride-hailing is prevalent. We believe these results can directly inform policies that foster more equitable, cost-effective, and sustainable shared mobility systems in the post-pandemic landscape. Full article

Unbalanced accelerations occurring during tram travel have a significant impact on passenger comfort and safety, as well as on the rate of wear and tear on infrastructure and rolling stock. Ideally, these dynamic forces should be monitored continuously in real-time; however, traditional systems require high-precision accelerometers and proprietary software—investments often beyond the reach of municipally funded tram operators. To this end, as part of the research project “Accelerometer Measurements in Rail Passenger Transport Vehicles”, pilot measurement campaigns were conducted in Poland on tram lines in Gdańsk, Toruń, Bydgoszcz, and Olsztyn. Off-the-shelf smartphones equipped with MEMS accelerometers and GPS modules, running the Physics Toolbox Sensor Suite Pro app, were used. Although the research employs widely known methods, this paper addresses part of the gap in affordable real-time monitoring by demonstrating that, in the future, equipment equipped solely with consumer-grade MEMS accelerometers can deliver sufficiently accurate data in applications where high precision is not critical. This paper presents an analysis of a subset of results from the Gdańsk tram network. Lateral (x) and vertical (z) accelerations were recorded at three fixed points inside two tram models (Pesa 128NG Jazz Duo and Düwag N8C), while longitudinal accelerations were deliberately omitted at this stage due to their strong dependence on driver behavior. Raw data were exported as CSV files, processed and analyzed in R version 4.2.2, and then mapped spatially using ArcGIS cartograms. Vehicle speed was calculated both via the haversine formula—accounting for Earth’s curvature—and via a Cartesian approximation. Over the ~7 km route, both methods yielded virtually identical results, validating the simpler approach for short distances. Acceleration histograms approximated Gaussian distributions, with most values between 0.05 and 0.15 m/s2, and extreme values approaching 1 m/s2. The results demonstrate that low-cost mobile devices, after future calibration against certified accelerometers, can provide sufficiently rich data for ride-comfort assessment and show promise for cost-effective condition monitoring of both track and rolling stock. Future work will focus on optimizing the app’s data collection pipeline, refining standard-based analysis algorithms, and validating smartphone measurements against benchmark sensors. Full article

This paper proposes an incentive scheme based on a public–private partnership (PPP) to encourage low-carbon travel behavior by inducing the mode choice shift from private cars to public transit. The scheme involves three key entities: travelers, the government, and the private sector. Travelers can choose between private cars and public transit, producing different emissions. As the leader, the government aims to reduce total emission to a certain level with limited budgets. The private sector, as an intermediary, invests subsidies in low-carbon rewards to attract green travelers and benefits from a larger user pool. A two-layer multi-objective optimization model is proposed, which includes travel time, monetary cost, and emission. The objective of the upper level is to maximize the utilities of the private sector and minimize social costs to the government. The lower layer is the user equilibrium of the travelers. The numerical results obtained through heuristic algorithms demonstrate that the proposed scheme can achieve a triple-win situation, where all stakeholders benefit. Moreover, sensitivity analysis finds that prioritizing pollution control strategies will be beneficial to the government only if the unit pollution control cost coefficient is below a low threshold. Contrary to intuition, larger government subsidies do not necessarily lead to better promotion of low-carbon travel. Full article

This study presents the design and implementation of a novel, sensor-based falling-sphere viscometer specifically tailored for measuring the viscosity of engine oil. The equipment utilizes a metallic sphere and two strategically placed sensors to determine the travel time over a predetermined distance within an oil-filled tube. By applying fundamental principles of fluid dynamics, including Stokes’ law, the system accurately calculates the dynamic viscosity based on the sphere’s velocity and the oil’s density. Experimental validation at particular temperature demonstrates the device’s sensitivity and reliability, which are critical for assessing oil degradation and engine performance. The simplicity and low cost of the design make it an attractive alternative to conventional, more complex viscometers. Furthermore, the automated data acquisition system reduces human error and enhances reproducibility of results. Overall, the developed instrument shows great promise for both laboratory research and practical maintenance applications in the automotive industry. Full article

The Korean government proposes introducing a transfer-type bus system to reduce urban congestion. Transfer-type buses turn around at the Seoul border, requiring passengers to transfer to other modes to reach downtown. These buses have shorter routes, allowing reduced headways and increased bus supply. While this approach reduces congestion in the downtown area, it may cause transfer resistance, making it essential to analyze willingness to shift (WTS). This study uses a latent class model to categorize potential interregional bus users into three types: transfer avoidance, cost-sensitive, and time-sensitive. Over 50% of users in each group express WTS, showing a positive response to the transfer-type bus introduction. The choice model results indicate that the travel time and cost of direct type buses affect WTS, suggesting that policies should consider these factors for effective implementation. Full article
