Allium ursinum (wild garlic) has long been collected and consumed as food and medicine in the north temperate zone, where its popularity is growing. Colchicum autumnale and Convallaria majalis contain toxic alkaloids. Their habitats overlap, and without flowers, their vegetative organs are similar. Confusing the leaves of Colchicum or Convallaria with the leaves of wild garlic has repeatedly led to serious human and animal poisonings. Our goal was to find a histological characteristic that makes the separation of these leaves clear. We compared the anatomy of foliage leaves of these three species grown in the same garden (Debrecen, Hungary, Central Europe). We used a bright-field microscope to characterize the transversal sections of leaves. Cell types of epidermises were compared based on peels and different impressions. We established some significant differences in the histology of leaves. The adaxial peels of Allium consist of only “long” cells without stomata, but the abaxial ones show “long”, “short” and “T” cells with wavy cell walls as a peculiarity, and stomata. Convallaria and Colchicum leaves are amphystomatic, but in the case of Allium, they are hypostomatic. These traits were confirmed with herbarium specimens. Our results help to clearly identify these species even in mixed, dried plant material and may be used for diagnostic purposes. Full article

Difficult, extreme operating conditions of parabolic antennas under precipitation and sub-zero temperatures require the creation of effective heating systems. The purpose of the research is to develop a multilayer coating containing two metal-ceramic layers, epoxy composite layers, carbon fabric, and an outer layer of basalt fabric, which allows for effective heating of the antenna, and to study the properties of this coating. The multilayer coating was formed on an aluminum base that was subjected to abrasive jet processing. The first and second metal-ceramic layers, Al2O3 + 5% Al, which were applied by high-speed multi-chamber cumulative detonation spraying (CDS), respectively, provide maximum adhesion strength to the aluminum base and high adhesion strength to the third layer of the epoxy composite containing Al2O3. On this not-yet-polymerized layer of epoxy composite containing Al2O3, a layer of carbon fabric (impregnated with epoxy resin) was formed, which serves as a resistive heating element. On top of this carbon fabric, a layer of epoxy composite containing Cr2O3 and SiO2 was applied. Next, basalt fabric was applied to this still-not-yet-polymerized layer. Then, the resulting layered coating was compacted and dried. To study this multilayer coating, X-ray analysis, light and raster scanning microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy were used. The thickness of the coating layers and microhardness were measured on transverse microsections. The adhesion strength of the metal-ceramic coating layers to the aluminum base was determined by both bending testing and peeling using the adhesive method. It was established that CDS provides the formation of metal-ceramic layers with a maximum fraction of lamellae and a microhardness of 7900–10,520 MPa. In these metal-ceramic layers, a dispersed subgrain structure, a uniform distribution of nanoparticles, and a gradient-free level of dislocation density are observed. Such a structure prevents the formation of local concentrators of internal stresses, thereby increasing the level of dispersion and substructural strengthening of the metal-ceramic layers’ material. The formation of materials with a nanostructure increases their strength and crack resistance. The effectiveness of using aluminum, chromium, and silicon oxides as nanofillers in epoxy composite layers was demonstrated. The presence of structures near the surface of these nanofillers, which differ from the properties of the epoxy matrix in the coating, was established. Such zones, specifically the outer surface layers (OSL), significantly affect the properties of the epoxy composite. The results of industrial tests showed the high performance of the multilayer coating during antenna heating. Full article

The present paper proposes a three-dimensional (3D) spherical shell model for the magneto-electro-elastic (MEE) free vibration analysis of simply supported multilayered smart shells. A mixed curvilinear orthogonal reference system is used to write the unified 3D governing equations for cylinders, cylindrical panels and spherical shells. The closed-form solution of the problem is performed considering Navier harmonic forms in the in-plane directions and the exponential matrix method in the thickness direction. A layerwise approach is possible, considering the interlaminar continuity conditions for displacements, electric and magnetic potentials, transverse shear/normal stresses, transverse normal magnetic induction and transverse normal electric displacement. Some preliminary cases are proposed to validate the present 3D MEE free vibration model for several curvatures, materials, thickness values and vibration modes. Then, new benchmarks are proposed in order to discuss possible effects in multilayered MEE curved smart structures. In the new benchmarks, first, three circular frequencies for several half-wave number couples and for different thickness ratios are proposed. Thickness vibration modes are shown in terms of displacements, stresses, electric displacement and magnetic induction along the thickness direction. These new benchmarks are useful to understand the free vibration behavior of MEE curved smart structures, and they can be used as reference for researchers interested in the development of of 2D/3D MEE models. Current asphalt pavement structural design methods often lack a strong quantitative link to materials’ mixtures and mechanical properties and typically ignore the significant tensile–compressive disparities of materials, resulting in notable analysis errors. This study employed the dual-modulus theory to numerically analyze flexible base asphalt pavements under varied configurations, revealing how critical structural responses and fatigue life evolve. This examination also determined optimal layer mixes through mechanical parameter modeling for integrated material–structure design. The results showed that fundamental responses and fatigue life vary nonlinearly with thickness and modulus. The effect of modulus outweighed that of thickness, with the effects of the tensile modulus being more pronounced than compressive ones, and surface transverse strain being most sensitive to both. The recommended compressive–tensile modulus ratios were about 1.5, 2.0, and 1.2 for upper, lower, and base layers, respectively. By using this integrated design method, the optimized pavement structures achieved superior stress distribution, significantly extending the base service life. As a result, more realistic design lifetimes were obtained. Full article

Bamboo scrimber is an environmentally friendly biomass building material with excellent mechanical properties. However, it is susceptible to delamination failure of the transverse fibers under compression, which limits its structural performance. To address this problem, this study utilizes steel tubes to encase bamboo scrimber, forming a novel bamboo scrimber-filled steel tubular column. This configuration enables the steel tube to provide effective lateral restraint to the bamboo material. Axial compression tests were conducted on 18 specimens, including bamboo scrimber columns and bamboo scrimber-filled steel tubular columns, to investigate the effects of steel ratio and loading mode (full-section and core loading) on the axial compression performance. The test results indicate that the external steel tubes significantly enhance the structural load-bearing capacity and deformation capacity. Primary failure modes of the composite columns include shear failure and buckling. The ultimate stress and strain of the structure are positively correlated with the steel ratio; as the steel ratio increases, the ultimate stress of the specimens can increase by up to 19.2%, while the ultimate strain can increase by up to 37.7%. The core-loading specimens exhibited superior load-bearing capacity and deformation ability compared to the full-section-loading specimens. Considering the differences in the curves for full-section and core loading, the steel tube confinement coefficient was introduced, and the predictive models for the ultimate stress and ultimate strain of the bamboo scrimber-filled steel tubular column were developed with accurate prediction. Optimising the friction coefficient helps reduce friction losses and improve the efficiency of mechanical systems. The purpose of this study is to experimentally investigate the impact of roughness orientation on the friction coefficient in elastohydrodynamic (EHD) contact. Tests were carried out on a twin-disc machine. Three pairs of discs of identical material (nitrided steel) and geometry were tested: a smooth pair (the root mean square surface roughness Sq = 0.07 µm), a pair with transverse roughness and another with longitudinal roughness. The two rough pairs have similar roughness amplitudes (Sq = 0.5 µm). A comparison of the friction generated by these different pairs was carried out to highlight the effect of the roughness orientation under different operating conditions (oil injection temperature from 60 to 80 °C, Hertzian pressure from 1.2 to 1.5 GPa and mean rolling speed from 5 to 30 m/s). Throughout all the tests conducted in this study, longitudinal roughness resulted in higher friction than transverse, with an increase of up to 30%. Moreover, longitudinal roughness is more sensitive to variations in operating conditions. Finally, in all tests, the asperities of longitudinal roughness were found to influence the friction behaviour, unlike transverse roughness. Full article

In engineering practice, liquid droplet impingement typically occurs at an oblique angle relative to the target surface, yet the influence of impact orientation on damage outcomes remains contentious and exhibits target-material dependency. In this paper, a typical single-waterjet-generating technique is applied to liquid impact tests on a unidirectional carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminate, with special focus on the effects of the impingement angle and the fiber orientation. Finite-element simulation is employed to help reveal the failure mechanism of oblique impacts. The results show that, in most cases, the damage caused by a 15° oblique impact is slightly larger than that of a normal impact, while the increase amplitude varies with different impact speeds. Resin removal is more prone to occur when the projection of the waterjet velocity on the impact surface is perpendicular (marked as the fiber orientation PE) rather than parallel (marked as the fiber orientation PA) to the fiber direction of the top layer. A PE fiber orientation can lead to mass material peeling in comparison with PA, and the damage range is even much larger than for a normal impact. The underlying mechanism can be attributed to the increased lateral jet-particle velocity and resultant shear stress along the impact projection direction. The distinct damage modes observed on the CFRP laminate with the different fiber orientations PE and PA originate from the asymmetric tensile properties in the longitudinal/transverse directions of laminates coupled with dissimilar fiber–matrix interfacial characteristics. A theoretical model for the surface damage area under a single-jet impact was established through experimental data fitting based on a modified water-hammer pressure contact-radius formulation. The model quantitatively characterizes the influence of critical parameters, including the jet velocity, diameter, and impact angle, on the central area of the surface failure ring. Full article

Non-uniform temperature fields are developed during the welding of studs in steel–concrete composite bridges. Due to uneven thermal expansion and reversible solid-state phase transformations between ferrite/martensite and austenite structures within the materials, residual stresses are induced, which ultimately degrades the mechanical performance of the structure. For a better understanding of the influence on steel–concrete composite bridges’ structural behavior by residual stress, accurate simulation of the spatio-temporal temperature distribution during stud welding under practical engineering conditions is critical. This study introduces a precise simulation method for temperature evolution during stud welding, in which the Gaussian heat source model was applied. The simulated results were validated by real welding temperature fields measured by the infrared thermography technique. The maximum error between the measured and simulated peak temperatures was 5%, demonstrating good agreement between the measured and simulated temperature distributions. Sensitivity analyses on input current and plate thickness were conducted. The results showed a positive correlation between peak temperature and input current. With lower input current, flatter temperature gradients were observed in both the transverse and thickness directions of the steel plate. Additionally, plate thickness exhibited minimal influence on radial peak temperature, with a maximum observed difference of 130 °C. However, its effect on peak temperature in the thickness direction was significant, yielding a maximum difference of approximately 1000 °C. The thermal influence of group studs was also investigated in this study. The results demonstrated that welding a new stud adjacent to existing ones introduced only minor disturbances to the established temperature field. The maximum peak temperature difference before and after welding was approximately 100 °C. Full article

In this study, the behavior of a three-hinged buried precast arch structure under the impact of the design truck was studied and evaluated based on the finite element method. A three-dimensional finite element analysis model of the buried precast arch structure has been meticulously established, considering arch segments’ joining and surface contact and interaction between surrounding soil and concrete structures. The behavior of the arch structure was examined and compared with the influence of pavement types, number of lanes, and axle spacings. The crucial findings indicate that arch structure behavior differs depending on design truck layouts and pavement stiffness and less on multi-lane vehicle loading effects. Furthermore, the extent of pressure propagation under the wheel depends not only on the magnitude of the axle load but also on the stiffness of the pavement structures. Cement concrete pavement (CCP) allows better dispersion of wheel track pressure on the embankment than asphalt concrete pavement (ACP). Therefore, the degree of increase in arch displacement with ACP is higher than that of CCP. To enhance the coverage of the vehicle influence zone, an extension of the backfill material width should be considered from the bottom of the arch and with the prism plane created at a 45-degree transverse angle. Automated fiber placement (AFP) composites exhibit complex mechanical behaviors due to manufacturing-induced mesostructural variations, including resin-rich regions and tow gaps that significantly influence both local stress distributions and global material responses. This study presents a hierarchically nested modeling framework based on the Parametric High-Fidelity Generalized Method of Cells (PHFGMC) to predict the effective elastic properties and nonlinear mechanical response of AFP composites. The PHFGMC model integrates micro- and meso-scale analyses using representative volume elements (RVEs) derived from micrographs of AFP composite laminates to capture these manufacturing-induced characteristics. Multiple RVE configurations with varied gap patterns are analyzed to quantify the influence of mesostructural features on global stress–strain response. Predictions for linear and nonlinear elastic behaviors are validated against experimental results from carbon fiber/epoxy AFP specimens, demonstrating good quantitative agreement with measured responses. A cohesive extension of the PHFGMC framework further captures damage initiation and crack propagation under transverse tensile loading, revealing failure mechanisms specifically associated with tow gaps and resin-rich areas. By systematically accounting for manufacturing-induced variability through detailed RVE modeling, the nested PHFGMC framework enables the accurate prediction of global mechanical performance and localized behavior, providing a robust computational tool for optimizing AFP composite design in aerospace and other high-performance applications. The making of a land patrimony for the benefit of religious missions is profoundly linked to territorial construction in the colonies but is rarely examined from the angle of ecclesiastical governmentality over the ceded lands. This analysis highlights three complementary processes for understanding the role of religious mission land heritage in territorial reconfigurations. First, this article examines the process of “land sanctuarization”, which materializes territorial anchoring through the crystallization of land rights granted to religious missions over customary lands previously presumed to be “vacant”. Next, it explores the formation of an “ecclesiastical dominium”, manifested in the dismantling of state missions and their free transfer, explicit or tacit, to religious missions under concession or agreement regimes. This reveals the exercise of state power over the land heritage of religious missions, positioning them as structuring axes and administrative intermediaries for public services, thus giving rise to an ecclesiastical governmentality that drives territorial production and reconfiguration. Finally, postcolonial dynamics reveal the resurgence of new spatial polarities shaped by the complexity of evolving religious actors along the center–periphery axis of a recomposing territorialization. This study underscores the importance of a transversal approach to better govern the land legacies of religious missions, fostering a pluralistic reterritorialization of postcolonial societies in central Africa. Loading and clamping schemes significantly influence the behavior of shape memory alloys, specifically, the course of their solid-state transformations. This paper presents experimental and numerical findings regarding the nonlinear response of samples of the above-mentioned type of smart materials observed during tensile tests. Hysteretic properties were studied to elucidate the superelastic behavior of the tested and modeled samples. The conducted tensile tests considered two configurations of grips, i.e., the standard one, where the jaws transversely clamp a specimen, and the customized bollard grip solution, which the authors developed to reduce local stress concentration in a specimen. The characteristic impact of the boundary conditions on the solid phase transformation in shape memory alloys, present due to the specific clamping scheme, was studied using a thermal camera and extensometer. Martensitic transformation and the plateau region in the nonlinear stress–strain characteristics were observed. The results of the numerical simulation converged to the experimental outcomes. This study explains the complex nature of the phase changes in shape memory alloys under specific boundary conditions induced by a given clamping scheme. In particular, variation in the martensitic transformation course is identified as resulting from the stress distribution observed in the specimen’s clamping area. Full article

Differences in Kinematic and Muscle Activity Between ACL Injury Risk and Healthy Players in Female Football: Influence of Change of Direction Amplitude in a Cross-Sectional Case–Control Study

Background and Objectives: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury rates remain high and have a significant impact on female football players. This study aims to evaluate knee kinematics and lower limb muscle activity in players at risk of ACL injury compared to healthy players through three side-cutting tests. It also investigates how the amplitude of a change in direction influences stabilization parameters. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional case–control study was conducted with 16 second division female futsal players (23.93 ± 5.16 years), divided into injured (n = 8) and healthy groups (n = 8). Injured players had a history of non-contact knee injury involving valgus collapse, without undergoing surgical intervention. Three change of direction tests, namely the Change of Direction and Acceleration Test (CODAT), Go Back (GOB) test, and Turn (TURN) test, were used for evaluation. The peak and range of knee joint angles and angular velocities across three planes, along with the average rectified and peak envelope EMG signals of the Biceps Femoris (BF), Semitendinosus (ST), Vastus Medialis (VM), and Lateral Gastrocnemius (LG), were recorded during the preparation and load phases. Group differences were analyzed using two-factor mixed-model ANOVA with pairwise comparisons. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: Injured players demonstrated lower external tibial rotation angular velocity and a greater range of motion in tibial external rotation compared to healthy players. Additionally, the injured group showed significantly higher average rectified muscle activity in VM and LG both increased by 4% during the load phase. The CODAT and TURN tests elicited higher BF and VM muscle activity, compared to the GOB test. The TURN test also showed greater extension angular velocity in the sagittal plane. Conclusions: The results revealed differences in knee kinematics and muscle activity between players at risk of ACL injury and healthy players, influenced by the amplitude of directional changes. Players altered transverse plane mechanics and increased VM and LG activation during LOAD may reflect a dysfunctional motor pattern, while the greater sagittal plane angular velocity and VM and BF activation from the CODAT and the TURN test highlight their higher potential to replicate ACL injury mechanisms compared to the GOB test. Transverse Rupture of Segment II (Couinaud) of the Left Hepatic Lobe in Deceleration Trauma: Morphological Characteristics and a Strategy for Intraoperative Detection

Background/Objectives: Deceleration can cause liver ruptures via ligament traction, with a specific, little-known transverse rupture in segment II of the left lobe being a concern. This study aimed to provide a detailed morphological characterization of these segment II ruptures, analyse their formation mechanisms using autopsy material, and propose a systematic intraoperative assessment method to improve their detection. Methods: This study analysed the autopsy cases of 132 victims of sudden, violent deceleration (falls from height, traffic accidents) performed between 2011 and 2014. Liver injuries were meticulously described, focusing on the morphological characteristics of ruptures (course, shape, depth) and their location relative to hepatic ligaments. Cases with prior liver resection due to injuries were excluded. Results: Liver ruptures were found in 61 of the 132 analysed cases (46.2%). A “new location” for ruptures was identified on the diaphragmatic surface of the left lobe’s segment II, near and along the left coronary and triangular ligaments. This specific type of rupture was found in 14 cases. Overall, 40 cadavers had liver ruptures near ligaments, totalling 55 such distinct ruptures, indicating that some had multiple ligament-associated tears. The incidence of liver rupture at this newly described site was statistically significant. Conclusions: Transverse rupture of the left hepatic lobe’s segment II, in its subdiaphragmatic area, results from ligament “pulling” forces during deceleration and is a characteristic injury. Its presence should be considered following blunt abdominal trauma involving deceleration, and the subdiaphragmatic area of the left lateral lobe requires intraoperative inspection, especially if other ligament-associated liver ruptures are found. This study is based on the laser-induced thermal-crack propagation (LITP) technology, focusing on the issues of deviation and thermal damage during the transverse crack propagation process, with the aim of achieving high-purity, non-destructive, and high-precision cutting of glass. A 50 W, 1064 nm fiber laser is used for S-pattern scanning cutting of soda–lime glass. A moving heat source model is established and analyzed via MATLAB R2022a numerical simulation. Combined with the ABAQUS 2019 software, the relationships among temperature field, stress field, crack propagation, and deviation during laser-induced thermal crack cutting are deeply explored. Meanwhile, laser thermal fracture experiments are also carried out. A confocal microscope detects glass surface morphology, cross-sectional roughness and hardness under different heat flux densities (HFLs), determining the heat flux density threshold affecting the glass surface quality. Through a comprehensive study of theory, simulation, and experiments, it is found that with an increase in the HFL value of the material, the laser-induced thermal crack propagation can be divided into four stages. When the heat flux density value is in the range of 47.2 to 472 W/m2, the glass substrate has good cross-sectional characteristics. There is no ablation phenomenon, and the surface roughness of the cross-section is lower than 0.15 mm. The hardness decreases by 9.19% compared with the reference value. Full article
