Helminth parasites of wild animals represent a major threat to the health of these animals, leading to significant losses in performance, health, and zoonotic implications. In some zoos, anthelmintics have traditionally been used to control these parasites, many of which are also zoonotic. Other actions, such as the removal of organic waste, have also been adopted. Few or no control measures are applied to free-ranging wild animals. Helminthophagous fungi are a promising biological alternative. When animals ingest fungal spores, they are excreted in their feces, where they trap and destroy helminth larvae and eggs, preventing and reducing the parasite load in the environment. Another alternative is to administer fungi by spraying them directly into the environment. This review aims to examine the use of helminthophagous fungi in the control of helminthiases in wild animals, highlighting their potential to minimize dependence on chemical treatments and promote sustainable animal breeding and production. There are many challenges to making this viable, such as environmental variability, stability of formulations, and acceptance of this new technology. These fungi have been shown to reduce parasite burdens in wild animals by up to 75% and can be administered through the animals’ feeding troughs. To date, evidence shows that helminthophagous fungi can reliably curb environmental parasite loads for extended periods, offering a sustainable alternative to repeated anthelmintic dosing. Their use has been linked to tangible gains in body condition, weight, and overall welfare in various captive and free-ranging wildlife species. Full article

Background/Objectives: Strengthening antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) programs is an invaluable intervention in the ongoing efforts to contain the threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), particularly in low-resource settings. This study evaluates the impact of the Telementoring, Education, and Advocacy Collaboration initiative for Health through Antimicrobial Stewardship (TEACH AMS), which uses the virtual Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) learning model to enhance AMS capacity in Kenya, Ghana, and Malawi. Methods: A mixed-methods approach was used, which included attendance data collection, facility-level assessments, post-session and follow-up surveys, as well as focus group discussions. Results: Between September 2023 and February 2025, 77 virtual learning sessions were conducted, engaging 2445 unique participants from hospital-based AMS committees and health professionals across the three countries. Participants reported significant knowledge gain, and data showed facility improvements in two core AMS areas, including the implementation of multidisciplinary ward-based interventions/communications and enhanced monitoring of antibiotic resistance patterns. Along those lines, participants reported that the program assisted them in improving prescribing and culture-based treatments, and also evidence-informed antibiotic selection. The evidence of implementing ward-based interventions was further stressed in focus group discussions, as well as other strengthened practices like point-prevalence surveys, and development or revision of stewardship policies. Substantial improvements in microbiology services were also shared by participants, particularly in Malawi. Other practices mentioned were strengthened multidisciplinary communication, infection prevention efforts, and education of patients and the community. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that a virtual case-based learning educational intervention, providing structured and tailored AMS capacity building, can drive behavior change and strengthen healthcare systems in low resource settings. Future efforts should aim to scale up the engagements and sustain improvements to further strengthen AMS capacity. Full article

As dengue is an increasing global health threat, a better understanding of the global circulation dynamics and its determinants would be helpful for precise prevention and control of dengue. The dynamics of global circulation of the four dengue virus serotypes were explored utilizing genetic sequences through a network-based method. Four new circulation indicators, including local intensity, betweenness centrality, tip frequency, and persistence time, were defined. Three circulation roles, including source, hub, and destination, were proposed on the basis of new indicators. Spatial and temporal changes of the three circulation roles, along with the persistence time, were explored. Important determinants were also evaluated by machine learning models. Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam in Asia and Venezuela and Colombia in Americas were the sources for all four serotypes in different decades. Destinations were observed mostly in island regions. Over the decades, the number of regions with different circulation roles and persistence of DENV-1 increased significantly. Climate and airline factors were involved in the important determinants to circulation roles and persistence of dengue. The roles identified in the global circulation of dengue and important determinants, including climate and airline factors, provide new insights into global dynamics and are beneficial for controlling dengue. The historical use of toxic chemicals to cause intentional harm has evolved from blister agents in World War I to highly lethal organophosphates and emerging families of chemicals, such as Novichok. In turn, medical or recreational substances like fentanyl, lysergamides, and phencyclidine pose a growing risk of hostile use, particularly related to the rapid proliferation of new psychoactive substances (NPSs). A narrative literature review was conducted covering specialized databases (PubMed, ScienceDirect, SciELO, Google Scholar) and sources from international organizations (OPCW, UNODC, ONU), analyzing historical and recent cases of the use of nerve agents in conflicts and the use of NPSs for hostile purposes. The main families of conventional agents (G, V, A series, and Novichok) and NPSs (lysergamides, PCP, fentanyl derivatives) were identified, highlighting their ease of synthesis, high toxicity profiles, and the regulatory gaps that facilitate their illicit production. In this scenario, it is essential to strengthen regulatory frameworks, surveillance systems, and ethical protocols in chemical research, as well as to promote international cooperation to prevent these substances from becoming chemical threats. Traffic accidents pose a significant threat to public safety, resulting in numerous fatalities, injuries, and a substantial economic burden each year. The development of predictive models capable of the real-time forecasting of post-accident impact using readily available data can play a crucial role in preventing adverse outcomes and enhancing overall safety. However, existing accident predictive models encounter two main challenges: first, a reliance on either costly or non-real-time data, and second, the absence of a comprehensive metric to measure post-accident impact accurately. To address these limitations, this study proposes a deep neural network model known as the cascade model. It leverages readily available real-world data from Los Angeles County to predict post-accident impacts. The model consists of two components: Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). The LSTM model captures temporal patterns, while the CNN extracts patterns from the sparse accident dataset. Furthermore, an external traffic congestion dataset is incorporated to derive a new feature called the “accident impact” factor, which quantifies the influence of an accident on surrounding traffic flow. Extensive experiments were conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid machine learning method in predicting the post-accident impact compared to state-of-the-art baselines. The results reveal a higher precision in predicting minimal impacts (i.e., cases with no reported accidents) and a higher recall in predicting more significant impacts (i.e., cases with reported accidents). The high pH and heavy metal leaching of argon oxygen decarburization (AOD) slag limit its application in agriculture. Slag carbonation can aid in decreasing slag alkalinity and inhibit heavy metal release; the environmental safety of utilizing carbonated AOD slag (CAS) as a fertilizer remains a topic of significant debate, however. In this work, pakchoi (Brassica chinensis L.) was planted in CAS-fertilized soil to investigate the accumulation and migration behavior of heavy metals in the soil–plant system and perform an associated risk assessment. Our results demonstrated that CAS addition increases Ca, Si, and Cr concentrations but decreases Mg and Fe concentrations in soil leachates. Low rates (0.25–1%) of CAS fertilization facilitate the growth of pakchoi, resulting in the absence of soil contamination and posing no threat to human health. At the optimal slag addition rate of 0.25%, the pakchoi leaf biomass, stem biomass, leaf area, and seedling height increased by 34.2%, 17.2%, 26.3%, and 8.7%, respectively. The accumulation of heavy metals results in diverging characteristics in pakchoi. Cr primarily accumulates in the roots; in comparison, Pb, Cd, Ni, and Hg preferentially accumulate in the leaves. The migration rate of the investigated heavy metals from the soil to pakchoi follows the order of Cr > Cd > Hg > Ni > Pb; in comparison, that from the roots to the leaves follows the order Cd > Ni > Hg > Cr > Pb. Appropriate utilization of CAS as a mineral fertilizer can aid in improving pakchoi yield, achieving sustainable economic benefits, and preventing environmental pollution. Full article

We present a model that integrates the mapping of the phenology and climatic suitability for the spotted lanternfly (SLF), Lycorma delicatula (White, 1845) (Hemiptera: Fulgoridae), to provide guidance on when and where to conduct surveillance and management of this highly invasive pest. The model was designed for use in the Degree-Day, Establishment Risk, and Phenological Event Maps (DDRP) platform, which is an open-source decision support tool to help to detect, monitor, and manage invasive threats. We validated the model using presence records and phenological observations derived from monitoring studies and the iNaturalist database. The model performed well, with more than >99.9% of the presence records included in the potential distribution for North America, a large proportion of the iNaturalist observations correctly predicted, and a low error rate for dates of the first appearance of adults. Cold and heat stresses were insufficient to exclude the SLF from most areas of the conterminous United States (CONUS), but an inability for the pest to complete its life cycle in cold areas may hinder establishment. The appearance of adults occurred several months earlier in warmer regions of North America and Europe, which suggests that host plants in these areas may experience stronger feeding pressure. The near-real-time forecasts produced by the model are available at USPest.org and the USA National Phenology Network to support decision making for the CONUS. Forecasts of egg hatch and the appearance of adults are particularly relevant for surveillance to prevent new establishments and for managing existing populations. Full article

The diversity and distribution of medical and veterinary-relevant fungal diseases in Africa underscore the critical need for a multisectoral One Health strategy to enhance cost-effective preparedness and prevention. This review explores the geographic spread and epidemiology of key medical and veterinary fungi, including Emergomyces, Blastomyces, Coccidioides, Cryptococcus, Dermatophytes, Histoplasma, Sporothrix, Talaromyces, Paracoccidioides, Aspergillus, and Malassezia. Evidence indicates that many of these infections remain underdiagnosed and underreported, especially in vulnerable immunocompromised populations, due to limited surveillance, diagnostic capacity, and awareness. The increasing prevalence of these diseases, often in tandem with rising HIV rates and environmental changes, highlights the urgent need for coordinated efforts across human, animal, and environmental health sectors. Implementing comprehensive, multisectoral interventions—focused on enhancing diagnostic capabilities, public awareness, surveillance, and cross-sector collaboration—is vital for effective prevention and control of these emerging fungal threats in Africa. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a critical global health threat by rendering existing antibiotics ineffective against infections, leading to increased mortality, prolonged illnesses, and higher healthcare costs. Developing new antibiotics is essential to combat resistant pathogens, safeguard modern medical procedures, and prevent a return to a pre-antibiotic era where common infections become untreatable. We report a series of chiral tricarbonyl rhenium(I) complexes incorporating enantiopure pinene-substituted bipyridine ligands (L#) of the general formula fac-[Re(CO)3L#X] and fac-[Re(CO)3L#Py]+ (where X = Cl or Br and Py = pyridine). These complexes were isolated as mixtures of two diastereomers, characterized by standard techniques, and evaluated for cytotoxic activity against methicillin-resistant and methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA and MSSA). The results revealed notable antibacterial efficacy (MIC = 1.6 μM), reflected in high therapeutic indices (Ti > 10). In contrast, analogous complexes bearing non-chiral 2,2′-bipyridine ligands exhibited no activity, underscoring the critical role of chirality in modulating biological interactions at the molecular level. These findings highlight the potential of chiral Re(I) complexes as promising scaffolds for the development of more potent and selective antibacterial agents. Full article

Introduction: Burnout syndrome, long described as an “occupational phenomenon”, now affects 15–20% of the general workforce and more than 50% of clinicians, teachers, social-care staff and first responders. Its precise nosological standing remains disputed. We conducted a mechanistic review of electroencephalography (EEG) studies to determine whether burnout is accompanied by reproducible brain-function alterations that justify disease-level classification. Methods: Following PRISMA-adapted guidelines, two independent reviewers searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library and reference lists (January 1980–May 2025) using combinations of “burnout,” “EEG”, “electroencephalography” and “event-related potential.” Only English-language clinical investigations were eligible. Eighteen studies (n = 2194 participants) met the inclusion criteria. Data were synthesised across three domains: resting-state spectra/connectivity, event-related potentials (ERPs) and longitudinal change. Results: Resting EEG consistently showed (i) a 0.4–0.6 Hz slowing of individual-alpha frequency, (ii) 20–35% global alpha-power reduction and (iii) fragmentation of high-alpha (11–13 Hz) fronto-parietal coherence, with stage- and sex-dependent modulation. ERP paradigms revealed a distinctive “alarm-heavy/evaluation-poor” profile; enlarged N2 and ERN components signalled hyper-reactive conflict and error detection, whereas P3b, Pe, reward-P3 and late CNV amplitudes were attenuated by 25–50%, indicating depleted evaluative and preparatory resources. Feedback processing showed intact or heightened FRN but blunted FRP, and affective tasks demonstrated threat-biassed P3a latency shifts alongside dampened VPP/EPN to positive cues. These alterations persisted in longitudinal cohorts yet normalised after recovery, supporting trait-plus-state dynamics. The electrophysiological fingerprint differed from major depression (no frontal-alpha asymmetry, opposite connectivity pattern). Conclusions: Across paradigms, burnout exhibits a coherent neurophysiological signature comparable in magnitude to established psychiatric disorders, refuting its current classification as a non-disease. Objective EEG markers can complement symptom scales for earlier diagnosis, treatment monitoring and public-health surveillance. Recognising burnout as a clinical disorder—and funding prevention and care accordingly—is medically justified and economically imperative. Full article

With increasing urban economic development, some industrial parks and residential areas are being situated adjacent to each other, creating a potential risk of soil and groundwater contamination from the wastewater and solid waste produced by enterprises. This contamination poses a threat to the health of nearby residents. Currently, groundwater pollution prevention and control zoning in China primarily targets groundwater environmental pollution risks and does not consider the health risks associated with groundwater exposure in industry–city integration areas. Therefore, a scientific assessment of environmental risks in industry–city integration areas is essential for effectively managing groundwater pollution. This study focuses on the high frequency and rapid pace of human activities in industry–city integration areas. It combines health risk assessment and groundwater pollution simulation results with traditional groundwater pollution control classification outcomes to develop a groundwater pollution risk zoning framework specifically suited to these integrated areas. Using this framework, we systematically assessed groundwater pollution risks in a representative industry–city integration area in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River in China and delineated groundwater pollution risk zones to provide a scientific basis for local groundwater environmental management. The assessment results indicate that the total area of groundwater pollution risk control zones is 30.37 km2, accounting for 19.06% of the total study area. The first-level control zone covers 5.38 km2 (3.38% of the total area), while the secondary control zone spans 24.99 km2 (15.68% of the total area). The first-level control zone is concentrated within industrial clusters, whereas the secondary control zone is widely distributed throughout the region. In comparison to traditional assessment methods, the zoning results derived from this study are more suitable for industry–city integration areas. This study also provides groundwater management recommendations for such areas, offering valuable insights for groundwater control in integrated industrial–residential zones. Full article

SMoV and SVBV are two major viruses that pose significant threats to the global strawberry industry. Both are latent viruses, making early detection difficult due to their uneven distribution and low concentration in host tissues. Traditional RT-PCR techniques are insufficient for precise and quantitative detection. In this study, TaqMan RT-qPCR detection systems for SMoV and SVBV were established for application in practical production settings, enabling accurate, rapid, and efficient detection of strawberry viruses. When viral accumulation in plants is low, the highly sensitive TaqMan RT-qPCR technique allows for accurate quantification, facilitating the early identification of infected plants and preventing large-scale outbreaks in cultivation areas. The development of a duplex TaqMan RT-qPCR assay enables simultaneous quantification of SMoV and SVBV in a single reaction, improving detection efficiency and providing technical support for risk assessment and effective control of strawberry viral diseases. In the face of escalating cyber threats to critical infrastructures, achieving robust cyber resilience has become paramount. This paper proposes an endogenous security-oriented framework for cyber resilience assessment, specifically tailored for critical infrastructures. Drawing on the principles of endogenous security, our framework integrates dynamic heterogeneous redundancy (DHR) and adaptive defense mechanisms to address both known and unknown threats. We model resilience across four key dimensions—Prevention, Destruction Resistance, Adaptive Recovery, and Evolutionary Learning—using a novel mathematical formulation that captures nonlinear interactions and temporal dynamics. The framework incorporates environmental threat entropy to dynamically adjust resilience scores, ensuring relevance in evolving attack landscapes. Through empirical validation on simulated critical infrastructure scenarios, we demonstrate the framework’s ability to quantify resilience trajectories and trigger timely defensive adaptations. Empiricalvalidation on a real-world critical infrastructure system yielded an overall resilience score of 82.75, revealing a critical imbalance between strong preventive capabilities (90/100) and weak Adaptive Recovery (66/100). Our approach offers a significant advancement over static risk assessment models by providing actionable metrics for strategic resilience investments. This work contributes to the field by bridging endogenous security theory with practical resilience engineering, paving the way for more robust protection of critical systems against sophisticated cyber threats. Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) is being increasingly promoted as a means to enhance diagnostic accuracy, to streamline workflows, and to improve overall care quality in primary care. However, empirical evidence on how primary care physicians (PCPs) perceive, engage with, and emotionally respond to AI technologies in everyday clinical settings remains limited. Concerns persist regarding AI’s usability, transparency, and potential impact on professional identity, workload, and the physician–patient relationship. Methods: This qualitative study investigated the lived experiences and perceptions of 28 PCPs practicing in diverse outpatient settings across Germany. Participants were purposively sampled to ensure variation in age, practice characteristics, and digital proficiency. Data were collected through in-depth, semi-structured interviews, which were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and subjected to rigorous thematic analysis employing Mayring’s qualitative content analysis framework. Results: Participants demonstrated a fundamentally ambivalent stance toward AI integration in primary care. Perceived advantages included enhanced diagnostic support, relief from administrative burdens, and facilitation of preventive care. Conversely, physicians reported concerns about workflow disruption due to excessive system prompts, lack of algorithmic transparency, increased cognitive and emotional strain, and perceived threats to clinical autonomy and accountability. The implications for the physician–patient relationship were seen as double-edged: while some believed AI could foster trust through transparent use, others feared depersonalization of care. Crucial prerequisites for successful implementation included transparent and explainable systems, structured training opportunities, clinician involvement in design processes, and seamless integration into clinical routines. Conclusions: Primary care physicians’ engagement with AI is marked by cautious optimism, shaped by both perceived utility and significant concerns. Effective and ethically sound implementation requires co-design approaches that embed clinical expertise, ensure algorithmic transparency, and align AI applications with the realities of primary care workflows. Moreover, foundational AI literacy should be incorporated into undergraduate health professional curricula to equip future clinicians with the competencies necessary for responsible and confident use. These strategies are essential to safeguard professional integrity, support clinician well-being, and maintain the humanistic core of primary care. Full article

The number of puppies imported to the United Kingdom (UK) from the European Union (EU) is increasing, as are concerns about the legality, welfare and potential disease risks associated with their trade. This study aimed to use an online survey to collect questionnaire data from UK residents about their awareness and knowledge of EU Pet Passports, illegal puppy importation, and dog-borne exotic diseases and the risks they might pose to UK-resident dogs and people. Valid responses were collected from n = 7184 UK residents, mainly current dog owners. We identified substantial knowledge gaps relating to EU Pet Passports, how puppies might be moved across Europe, and the legal age of importation. Awareness of exotic diseases was poor; knowledge about the risks they posed was even poorer, particularly in relation to dog–human transmission. With some respondents not even being confident that they had heard of rabies, there is substantial work to do to ensure that the UK canine and human populations remain safe in the face of significant welfare and exotic disease threats. These knowledge deficits may facilitate the burgeoning illegal trade in puppies across the EU. Legal change may be required to prevent consumers from unintentionally supporting poor welfare sources of puppies. Full article
