In this work, Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF), an additive manufacturing (AM) process, was optimised to produce pure magnesium components. The focus of the presented work is on the prediction of the relative product density using the machine learning model XGBoost to improve the production process and thus the usability of the material for practical use. Experimental tests with different parameters, laser power, scanning speed and layer thickness, and fixed parameters, track overlapping and hatching distance, were analysed and resulted in relative material densities between 89.29% and 99.975%. The XGBoost model showed high predictive power, achieving an R2 test result of 0.835, a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.728 and a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.982. Feature importance analysis showed that the interaction of laser power and scanning speed had the largest influence on the predictions at 35.9%, followed by laser power × layer thickness at 29.0%. The individual contributions were laser power (11.8%), scanning speed (10.7%), scanning speed × layer thickness (9.0%) and layer thickness (3.6%). These results provide a data-based method for LPBF parameter settings that improve manufacturing efficiency and component performance in the aerospace, automotive and biomedical industries and identify optimal parameter regions for a high density, serving as a pre-optimisation stage. A facile way to prepare Cu(OH)2 inorganic nanofiltration membranes with neatly arranged multilayers has been developed based on the reaction of a sodium hydroxide solution and a copper ammonia solution at the liquid–liquid interfaces. The effects of the concentration, temperature, and time of the liquid–liquid reaction on membrane structure and pore sizes were studied by SEM, TEM, and X-ray diffraction. The growth mechanism of the membrane was discussed and the formation process model was proposed. It was found that the reaction temperature was a key factor in obtaining a Cu(OH)2 monolayer, and this could be used to adjust the thickness and pore size of the monolayer. The as-prepared Cu(OH)2 membranes exhibited excellent filtration performance with the pure water fluxes of 156.2 L·m−2 h−1 bar−1 and retention rates of 100% for methylene blue (50 ppm) at a pressure of 0.1 MPa. This successfully opens up a new method of synthesizing multilayer nanoarrays’ Cu(OH)2 structure for nanofiltration. Full article

The use of methane as a carbon source for producing bacterial single-cell protein (SCP) has been one of the most interesting developments in recent years. Most of these upcoming industries are using a methanotroph, Methylococcus capsulatus Bath, for SCP production using natural gas as the substrate. In the present study, we have explored the possibility of using an indigenously isolated methanotroph from a rice field in India, Methylomagnum ishizawai strain KRF4, for producing SCP from biogas [derived from cow dung]. The process was eco-friendly, required minimal instruments and chemicals, and was carried out under semi-sterile conditions in a tabletop fish tank. As the name suggests, Methylomagnum is a genus of large methanotrophs, and the strain KRF4 had elliptical to rectangular size and dimensions of ~4–5 µm × 1–2 µm. In static cultures, when biogas and air were supplied in the upper part of the growing tank, the culture grew as a thick pellicle/biofilm that could be easily scooped. The grown culture was mostly pure, from the microscopic observations where the large size of the cells, with rectangular-shaped cells and dark granules, could easily help identify any smaller contaminants. Additionally, the large cell size could be advantageous for separating biomass during downstream processing. The amino acid composition of the lyophilized biomass was analyzed using HPLC, and it was seen that the amino acid composition was comparable to commercial fish meal, soymeal, Pruteen, and the methanotroph-derived SCP-UniProtein®. The only difference was that a slightly lower percentage of lysine, tryptophan, and methionine was observed in Methylomagnum-derived SCP. Methylomagnum ishizawai could be looked at as an alternative for SCP derived from methane or biogas due to the comparable SCP produced, on the qualitative level. Further intensive research is needed to develop a continuous, sustainable, and economical process to maximize biomass production and downstream processing. Full article

Currently, the trade-off between oxygen permeation flux and structural stability in conventional perovskite oxides restricts the practical application of oxygen permeable membranes. In this study, a high-entropy design was applied to the B-site of BSCF matrix materials, resulting in the successful synthesis of a high-entropy perovskite, Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.71Fe0.2Ta0.03Ni0.03Zr0.03O3−δ. The crystal structure, microstructure, and elemental composition of the material were systematically characterized and analyzed. Theoretical analysis and experimental characterization confirm that the material exhibits a stable single-phase high-entropy perovskite oxide structure. Under He as the sweep gas, the membrane achieved an oxygen permeation flux of 1.28 mL·cm−2·min−1 and operated stably for over 100 h (1 mm thick, 900 °C). In a 20% CO2/He atmosphere, the flux remained above 0.92 mL·cm−2·min−1 for over 100 h, demonstrating good CO2 tolerance. Notably, when the sweep gas is returned to the pure He atmosphere, the oxygen permeation flux fully recovers to 1.28 mL·cm−2·min−1, with no evidence of leakage. These findings indicate that the proposed B-site doping strategy can break the trade-off between oxygen permeability and structural stability in conventional perovskite membranes. This advancement supports the industrialization of oxygen permeable membranes and offers valuable theoretical guidance for the design of high-performance perovskite materials. Full article

Hydrogel films receive significant attention among researchers because they combine increased stimuli responsiveness and faster responses to the already excellent properties of their component materials. However, their preparation is complex and requires that many difficulties are overcome. The present work presents a new study regarding the preparation of pure and nanoparticle-loaded alginate-based films by spin-coating. Two-microliter solutions of sodium alginate and calcium chloride with different concentrations were deposited on a glass substrate and subjected to rapid rotations of between 100 and 1000 RPM. Film formation can be achieved by optimizing the ratio between the viscosity of the solutions, depending on their concentrations and the rotation speed. When these conditions are in the right range, a homogeneous film is obtained, showing good adherence to the substrate and uniform thickness. Films containing silver nanoparticles were prepared, exploiting the reaction between sodium borohydride and silver nitrate. The two reagents were added to the sodium alginate and calcium nitrate solution, respectively. Their concentration is the driving force for the formation of a uniform film: particles of about 50 nm that are well-dispersed throughout the film are obtained using AgNO3 at 4 mM and NaBH4 at 2 or 0.2 mM; meanwhile, at higher concentrations, one can also obtain the precipitation of inorganic crystals. Broader use of multioperational machines in forestry requires efficient methods for determining various timber parameters. Here, we present a novel approach to model the bark thickness (BT) as a function of stem diameter. Stem diameter (D) is any diameter measured along the bole, not a specific one. The following four regression models were tested: marginal model (MM; reference), classical nonlinear regression with independent residuals (M1), nonlinear regression with residuals correlated within a single tree (M2), and nonlinear regression with the correlation of residuals and random components, taking into account random changes between the trees (M3). Empirical data consisted of larch (Larix sp. Mill.) BT measurements carried out at two sites in northern Poland. Relative root square mean error (RMSE%) and adjusted R-squared (R2adj) served to compare the fitted models. Model fit was tested for each tree separately, and all trees were combined. Of the analysed models, M3 turned out to be the best fit for both the individual tree and all tree levels. The fit of the regression function M3 for SITE1 (50-year-old, pure stand located in northern Poland) was 87.44% (R2adj), and for SITE2 (63-year-old, pure stand situated in the north of Poland) it was 80.6%. Taking into account the values of RMSE%, at the individual tree level the M3 model fit at location SITE1 was closest to the MM, while at SITE2 it was better than the MM. For the most comprehensive regression model, M3, it was checked how the error of the bark thickness estimate varied with stem diameter at different heights (from the base of the trees to the top). In general, the model’s accuracy increased with greater tree height. Full article

Introduction: Superficial partial thickness burns generally do not require surgical intervention and are managed with specialized wound dressings. Mepilex Ag® is commonly used and often represents the standard of care. This study evaluated the clinical performance of pure silk compared to Mepilex Ag®. Methods: A prospective, single-center intraindividual study was conducted on adult patients with superficial partial thickness burns. Each burn wound was divided, treating one half with pure silk and the other with Mepilex Ag®. Clinical parameters including wound closure time, pain levels, and scar quality at 3-month follow-up were analyzed. Results: Twenty-four patients were included (mean TBSA: 5.8%). Mepilex Ag® showed a trend towards a shorter wound closure time (10.5 vs. 11.5 days; p = 0.223). Pain scores remained below 4/10 for both dressings throughout treatment. However, Mepilex Ag® demonstrated significantly lower pain on day one (3.5 vs. 2.77; p = 0.039) and day two (2.91 vs. 2.27; p = 0.041). Scar quality after 3 months was similar. Conclusion: Both dressings proved to be effective treatment options. Pure silk required fewer resources, showed high clinical practicality, and demonstrated a similar performance to Mepilex Ag® in key clinical parameters, making it an interesting option for other clinics and our standard of care. Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid organic–inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) have attracted considerable attention in optoelectronic applications, owing to their remarkable characteristics. Nevertheless, the application of 2D HOIPs encounters inherent challenges due to the presence of insulating organic spacers, which create barriers for efficient interlayer charge transport (CT). To tackle this issue, we propose a BA2MAPb2I7/PEA2MA2Pb3I10 bilayer heterostructure, where efficient interlayer energy transfer (ET) facilitates compensation for the restricted charge transport across the organic spacer. Our findings reveal that under 532 nm light illumination, the BA2MAPb2I7/PEA2MA2Pb3I10 heterostructure photodetector exhibits a significant photocurrent enhancement compared with that of the pure PEA2MA2Pb3I10 device, mainly due to the contribution of the ET process. In contrast, under 600 nm light illumination, where ET is absent, the enhancement is rather limited, emphasizing the critical role of ET in boosting device performance. The overlap of the PL emission peak of BA2MAPb2I7 with the absorption spectra of PEA2MA2Pb3I10, alongside the PL quenching of BA2MAPb2I7 and the enhanced emission of PEA2MA2Pb3I10 provide confirmation of the existence of ET in the BA2MAPb2I7/PEA2MA2Pb3I10 heterostructure. Furthermore, the PL enhancement factor followed a 1/d2 relationship with the thickness of the hBN layer, indicating that ET originates from 2D-to-2D dipole–dipole coupling. This study not only highlights the potential of leveraging ET mechanisms to overcome the limitations of interlayer CT, but also contributes to the fundamental understanding required for engineering advanced 2D HOIP optoelectronic systems. Accurate and predictive models of lithium-ion batteries are essential for optimizing performance, extending lifespan, and ensuring safety. The reliability of these models depends on the accurate estimation of internal electrochemical and mechanical parameters, many of which are not directly measurable and must be identified via model-based fitting of experimental data. Unlike other parameter-estimation procedures, this study introduces a novel approach that integrates mechanical measurements with electrical data, with a specific application for lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells. An error analysis—based on the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and confidence ellipses—confirms that the inclusion of mechanical measurements significantly improves the accuracy of the identified parameters and the reliability of the algorithm compared to approaches relying just on electrochemical data. Two scenarios are analyzed: in the first, a teardown of the cell provides direct measurements of electrode thicknesses and the number of layers; in the second, these values are treated as additional unknown parameters. In the teardown case, the electrochemical–mechanical approach achieves significantly lower RMSEs and smaller confidence ellipses, proving its superior accuracy and consistency. In the second scenario, while the RMSE values of electrochemical-mechanical model are similar to those of the purely electrochemical one, the smaller ellipses still indicate better consistency and convergence in the parameter estimates. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis to initial guesses shows that the electrochemical-mechanical approach is more stable, consistently converging to coherent parameter values and confirming its greater reliability. Broad lateral size and thickness distributions impede the application of hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) as friction modifiers in base oil, although they possess remarkable potential for lubrication performance promotion. In this work, a cascade centrifugation-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation approach was presented to prepare BNNSs from hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) efficiently and scalably. Subsequently, they were ultrasonically dispersed into gas-to-liquid (GTL) base oil, and their lubrication performance promotion was evaluated by a four-ball tribotester. Tribological tests demonstrated that BNNS possesses excellent friction-reducing and anti-wear properties in GTL. Furthermore, the findings indicate that at a BNNS content of 0.8 wt.%, the system displayed the lowest COF and WSD. Particularly, with an addition of 0.8 wt.% BNNS into GTL, the AFC and WSD are reduced significantly by 40.1% and 35.4% compared to pure base oil, respectively, and the surface roughness, wear depth, and wear volume were effectively reduced by 91.0%, 68.5%, and 76.8% compared to GTL base oil, respectively. Raman, SEM-EDS, and XPS results proved that the outstanding friction-reducing and anti-wear properties of BNNS can mainly be ascribed to the presence of physical adsorption film and tribo-chemical film, which were composed of FeOOH, FeO, Fe3O4, and B2O3. Tin(II) sulfide(SnS)/titanium(IV) oxide (TiO2) heterostructure thin films were prepared by radio-frequency magnetron sputtering to investigate the enhancement effect of the formed heterojunction on the photocatalytic performance. By adjusting the sputtering time to vary the thickness of the SnS layer, the crystallinity and light-absorption properties of the light-absorbing layer and the quality of the heterojunction interface were effectively controlled, thereby optimizing the fabrication process of the heterojunction. It was found that when the SnS layer thickness was 244 nm and the TiO2 layer thickness was 225 nm, the heterostructure film exhibited optimal photoelectrochemical performance, generating the highest photocurrent of 3.03 µA/cm2 under visible light, which was 13.8 times that of a pure TiO2 film and 2.4 times that of a pure SnS film of the same thickness. Additionally, it demonstrated the highest degradation efficiency for methylene blue dye. The improved photoelectrochemical performance of the SnS/TiO2 heterostructure film can be primarily attributed to the following: (1) the incorporation of narrow-bandgap SnS effectively broadens the light-absorption range, improving visible-light harvesting; (2) the staggered band alignment between SnS and TiO2 forms a type-II heterojunction, significantly enhancing the charge carrier separation and transport efficiency. The present work demonstrated the feasibility of magnetron sputtering for constructing high-quality SnS/TiO2 heterostructures, providing insights into the design and fabrication of photocatalytic heterojunctions. This study aimed to develop and optimize polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based polymeric films containing resveratrol (RSV) and to evaluate their applicability as oral mucosal wound dressings. Given the dynamic and complex nature of the oral environment, physicochemical parameters such as elasticity, mucoadhesive strength, and the release profile of the RSV were systematically investigated. The therapeutic performance of pure resveratrol was compared with that of an extract derived from Reynoutria japonica. Films were fabricated using a solvent casting method and characterized in terms of thickness uniformity, weight, color consistency, and flexibility, all of which met the required pharmaceutical criteria. Two tested formulations, FR2 (RSV/PVA/PVP/MCA15C/NaCMC/W/PGE), FE2 (extract/PVA/PVP/MCA15C/NaCMC/W/PGE), showed the best mucoadhesive properties (261.11 ± 0.5 g for FR2 and 299.43 ± 0.38 g for FE2) and a favorable release profile both in water (72.42% for FR2, 77.23% for FE2) and in saliva (49.74% for FR2, 49.70% for FE2). Moreover, the optimized films are characterized by hydrophilicity (contact angle < 90°) and the pH value of the extract after their blurring is close to physiological, which promotes better tolerance and reduces the risk of irritation. Obtained results for polymeric films with resveratrol and R. japonica extract confirmed their great potential for use in dentistry as modern, mucoadhesive dressings, improving the effectiveness of local therapies. According to previous studies, dynamic light regimes might enhance seedling development, survival rates, or economic efficiency in factory-based seedling production systems compared to continuous red and blue light irradiation. However, there have been few studies revealing the effects of discontinuous red and blue light on the carbohydrate accumulation and metabolism of tomato seedlings. Therefore, we planted tomato seedlings in an artificial light plant factory under a red background light with intermittent blue light intervention, namely R (as the control), R/RB32, R/RB40, R/RB64, and R/RB80 at an equal daily light integral. The growth, carbohydrate accumulation, and sugar metabolism were analyzed to investigate the effects of dynamic lighting modes on tomato seedlings. The results demonstrated the following: (1) Pure red light induced spindling of tomato seedlings, while intermittent blue light treatments enhanced stem thickness, leaf number, and leaf area, resulting in greater biomass accumulation. Among these treatments, the highest antioxidant enzyme activity and the lowest reactive oxygen species (ROS) content, accompanied by the highest biomass, were all observed in tomato seedlings subjected to R/RB80 (intermittent supplementation of 80 μmol·m−2·s−1 blue light under red light background). (2) The carbohydrate accumulation in tomato seedlings was increased under all treatments relative to the control. The sucrose content, enzyme activity, and gene expression level of sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS) were all up-regulated in tomato leaves treated with blue light irradiation compared with pure R. In addition, the highest soluble sugar content, along with the peak SPS activity and gene expression, was observed under the R/RB80 treatment. Meanwhile, the lowest fructose content accompanied by the lowest activity and gene expression of sucrose synthase (SS) were observed in tomato leaves treated with R/RB32. This implies that blue light supplementation may regulate sugar accumulation by modulating the activity or expression of enzymes involved in sucrose metabolism. (3) Moreover, shoot biomass, enzyme activity, and expression level of SPS were all found to increase with the increase in supplementary blue light intensity, indicating that short-duration high-intensity blue light was more effective in promoting carbohydrate accumulation in tomato seedlings than long-term low-intensity blue light based on the equal DLI. To improve the performance of superhard ceramic composites, this study aims to develop a dense, phase-pure, and uniform TiN coating on cubic boron nitride (cBN) particles with a target thickness of at least 150 nm. TiN coatings were applied using atomic layer deposition (ALD) alone, as well as a combined ALD/chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process. While ALD produced uniform and dense coatings, the thickness remained below 50 nm. The combined ALD/CVD approach achieved greater thicknesses up to 500 nm, though coating homogeneity remained a challenge. Optimization efforts, including increased ALD cycles and reduced CVD pressure, led to improved coating uniformity, with 25%–30% of particles coated to thicknesses ≥ 80 nm. Structural analysis confirmed dense, pore-free TiN1−x layers for all synthesized powders. In contrast, the commercial reference powder showed a non-uniform, multiphase coating (α − Ti, Ti2N, and TiN0.53) with defects. While the ALD/CVD powders exhibited better phase purity than the commercial sample, further optimization is needed to achieve consistent coatings above 150 nm. These results suggest the ALD/CVD route is promising for producing coatings suitable for use in ceramic matrix composites. Full article

Tendon ruptures have recently reached incidences of 18–35 cases/100,000 and often lead to adhesion formation during healing. Furthermore, scar formation may result in inferior biomechanics and often leads to re-ruptures. To address these problems, we cultivated rabbit adipose-derived stem cells in a co-culture with rabbit Achilles tenocytes and harvested their secretome. Following a cell-free approach, we incorporated such secretome into an electrospun tube via emulsion electrospinning. These novel implants were characterized by SEM, the WCA, and FTIR. Then, they were implanted in the rabbit Achilles tendon full transection model with an additional injection of secretome, and the adhesion extent as well as the biomechanics of extracted tendons were assessed three weeks postoperatively. The fiber thickness was around 3–5 μm, the pore size 11–13 μm, and the tube wall thickness approximately 265 μm. The WCA indicated slightly hydrophilic surfaces in the secretome-containing layer, with values of 80–90°. In vivo experiments revealed a significant reduction in adhesion formation (−22%) when secretome-treated tendons were compared to DegraPol® (DP) tube-treated tendons (no secretome). Furthermore, the cross-sectional area was significantly smaller in secretome-treated tendons compared to DP tube-treated ones (−32%). The peak load and stiffness of secretome-treated tendons were not significantly different from native tendons, while tendons treated with pure DP tubes exhibited significantly lower values. We concluded that secretome treatment supports tendon healing, with anti-adhesion effects and improved biomechanics at 3 weeks, making this approach interesting for clinical application. Full article
