The construction sector presently consumes about 40% of global energy and generates 36% of CO2 emissions, making facade retrofits a priority for decarbonising buildings. This review clarifies how ventilated facades (VFs), wall assemblies that interpose a ventilated air cavity between outer cladding and the insulated structure, address that challenge. First, the paper categorises VFs by structural configuration, ventilation strategy and functional control into four principal families: double-skin, rainscreen, hybrid/adaptive and active–passive systems, with further extensions such as BIPV, PCM and green-wall integrations that couple energy generation or storage with envelope performance. Heat-transfer analysis shows that the cavity interrupts conductive paths, promotes buoyancy- or wind-driven convection, and curtails radiative exchange. Key design parameters, including cavity depth, vent-area ratio, airflow velocity and surface emissivity, govern this balance, while hybrid ventilation offers the most excellent peak-load mitigation with modest energy input. A synthesis of simulation and field studies indicates that properly detailed VFs reduce envelope cooling loads by 20–55% across diverse climates and cut winter heating demand by 10–20% when vents are seasonally managed or coupled with heat-recovery devices. These thermal benefits translate into steadier interior surface temperatures, lower radiant asymmetry and fewer drafts, thereby expanding the hours occupants remain within comfort bands without mechanical conditioning. Climate-responsive guidance emerges in tropical and arid regions, favouring highly ventilated, low-absorptance cladding; temperate and continental zones gain from adaptive vents, movable insulation or PCM layers; multi-skin adaptive facades promise balanced year-round savings by re-configuring in real time. Overall, the review demonstrates that VFs constitute a versatile, passive-plus platform for low-carbon buildings, simultaneously enhancing energy efficiency, durability and indoor comfort. Future advances in smart controls, bio-based materials and integrated energy-recovery systems are poised to unlock further performance gains and accelerate the sector’s transition to net-zero. Emerging multifunctional materials such as phase-change composites, nanostructured coatings, and perovskite-integrated systems also show promise in enhancing facade adaptability and energy responsiveness. With the large-scale global deployment of photovoltaics (PV), traditional monitoring technologies face challenges such as wiring difficulties, high energy consumption, and high maintenance costs in remote or complex terrains, which limit long-term environmental sensing. Therefore, energy-harvesting systems are crucial for the intelligent operation of photovoltaic systems; however, their deployment depends on the accurate mapping of wind energy fields and solar irradiance fields. This study proposes a multi-scale simulation method based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to optimize the placement of energy-harvesting systems in photovoltaic power plants. By integrating wind and irradiance distribution analysis, the spatial characteristics of airflow and solar radiation are mapped to identify high-efficiency zones for energy harvesting. The results indicate that the top of the photovoltaic panel exhibits a higher wind speed and reflected irradiance, providing the optimal location for an energy-harvesting system. The proposed layout strategy improves overall energy capture efficiency, enhances sensor deployment effectiveness, and supports intelligent, maintenance-free monitoring systems. This research not only provides theoretical guidance for the design of energy-harvesting systems in PV stations but also offers a scalable method applicable to various geographic scenarios, contributing to the advancement of smart and self-powered energy systems. Fossil fuels, including coal, are a basis of energy systems in many countries worldwide. However, coal mining is associated with several difficulties, which include high temperatures within the coal mining area. It causes a need for cooling for safety reasons and also for the comfort of miners’ work. Typical cooling systems in mines are based on central systems, in which chilled water is generated in the compressor or absorption coolers on the ground and transported via pipelines to the air coolers in the areas of mining. The progressive mining operation causes a gradual increase in the distance between chilled water generators and air coolers, causing a decrease in the efficiency of the entire system and insufficient cooling capacity. As a result, it is necessary to increase the diameter of the chilled water pipelines and increase the cooling capacity of the chillers, which is associated with additional investment and technical problems. One solution to this problem may be the use of so-called ice slurry instead of chilled water in the existing mine cooling system. This article presents the cooling system, located in the mine LW Bogdanka S.A., based on ice slurry. The structure of the system and its key parameters are presented. The results show that switching from cooling water to ice slurry allowed the cooling capacity of the entire system to increase by 50% while maintaining the existing piping. This demonstrates the very high potential for the use of ice slurry, not only in mines, but wherever further increases in piping diameters to maintain the required cooling capacity are not possible or cost-effective. Agriculture and animal feeding operations are responsible for 87% of ammonia emissions in the UK. Controlling NH3 concentrations below 20 ppm is crucial to preserve workers’ and livestock’s well-being. Therefore, ammonia control systems are required for maintaining adequate air quality in livestock facilities. This study assessed the ammonia reduction efficiency of a novel air pollution abatement (APA) system used in a pig farm building. The monitoring duration was 11 weeks. The results were compared with the baseline from a previous pig cycle during the same time of year in 2023. A ventilation-controlled room was monitored during a two-phase campaign, and the actual ammonia concentrations were measured at different locations within the site and at the inlet/outlet of the APA system. A 98% ammonia reduction was achieved at the APA outlet through NH3 absorption in tap water. Ion chromatography analyses of farm water samples revealed NH3 concentrations of up to 530 ppm within 83 days of APA operation. Further scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray inspections revealed the presence of salts and organic/inorganic matter in the solid residues. This research can contribute to meeting current ammonia regulations (NECRs), also by reusing the process water as a potential nitrogen fertiliser in agriculture. Full article

As the global energy system accelerates its transition toward a low-carbon economy, renewable energy sources (RESs), such as wind and photovoltaic power, are rapidly replacing traditional fossil fuels. These RESs are becoming a critical element of deeply decarbonized power systems (DDPSs). However, the inherent non-stationarity, multi-scale volatility, and uncontrollability of RES output significantly increase the risk of source–load imbalance, posing serious challenges to the reliability and economic efficiency of power systems. Scenario generation technology has emerged as a critical tool to quantify uncertainty and support dispatch optimization. Nevertheless, conventional scenario generation methods often fail to produce highly credible wind and solar output scenarios. To address this gap, this paper proposes a novel renewable energy scenario generation method based on a multi-resolution diffusion model. To accurately capture fluctuation characteristics across multiple time scales, we introduce a diffusion model in conjunction with a multi-scale time series decomposition approach, forming a multi-stage diffusion modeling framework capable of representing both long-term trends and short-term fluctuations in RES output. A cascaded conditional diffusion modeling framework is designed, leveraging historical trend information as a conditioning input to enhance the physical consistency of generated scenarios. Furthermore, a forecast-guided fusion strategy is proposed to jointly model long-term and short-term dynamics, thereby improving the generalization capability of long-term scenario generation. Simulation results demonstrate that MDDPM achieves a Wasserstein Distance (WD) of 0.0156 in the wind power scenario, outperforming DDPM (WD = 0.0185) and MC (WD = 0.0305). Additionally, MDDPM improves the Global Coverage Rate (GCR) by 15% compared to MC and other baselines. Full article

Energy generation from renewable sources has increased exponentially worldwide, particularly wind energy, which is converted into electricity through wind turbines. The growing demand for renewable energy has driven the development of horizontal-axis wind turbines with larger dimensions, as the energy captured is proportional to the area swept by the rotor blades. In this context, the dynamic loads typically observed in wind turbine towers include vibrations caused by rotating blades at the top of the tower, wind pressure, and earthquakes (less common). In offshore wind farms, wind turbine towers are also subjected to dynamic loads from waves and ocean currents. Vortex-induced vibration can be an undesirable phenomenon, as it may lead to significant adverse effects on wind turbine structures. This study presents a two-dimensional transient model for a rigid body anchored by a torsional spring subjected to a constant velocity flow. We applied a coupling of the Fourier pseudospectral method (FPM) and immersed boundary method (IBM), referred to in this study as IMERSPEC, for a two-dimensional, incompressible, and isothermal flow with constant properties—the FPM to solve the Navier–Stokes equations, and IBM to represent the geometries. Computational simulations, solved at an aspect ratio of ϕ=4.0, were analyzed, considering Reynolds numbers ranging from Re=150 to Re = 1000 when the cylinder is stationary, and Re=250 when the cylinder is in motion. In addition to evaluating vortex shedding and Strouhal number, the study focuses on the characterization of space–time symmetry during the galloping response. The results show a spatial symmetry breaking in the flow patterns, while the oscillatory motion of the rigid body preserves temporal symmetry. The numerical accuracy suggested that the IMERSPEC methodology can effectively solve complex problems. Moreover, the proposed IMERSPEC approach demonstrates notable advantages over conventional techniques, particularly in terms of spectral accuracy, low numerical diffusion, and ease of implementation for moving boundaries. These features make the model especially efficient and suitable for capturing intricate fluid–structure interactions, offering a promising tool for analyzing wind turbine dynamics and other similar systems. The urgent demand for sustainable energy solutions in the face of climate change and resource depletion has catalyzed a global shift toward cleaner energy production and more efficient storage technologies. Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), as the cornerstone of modern portable electronics, electric vehicles, and grid-scale storage systems, are continually evolving to meet the growing performance requirements. In this dynamic context, two-dimensional (2D) materials have emerged as highly promising candidates for use in electrodes due to their layered structure, tunable electronic properties, and high theoretical capacity. Among 2D materials, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has gained increasing attention as a promising low-dimensional candidate for LIB anode applications. This review provides a comprehensive yet concise overview of recent advances in the application of MoS2 in LIB electrodes, with particular attention to its unique electrochemical behavior at the nanoscale. We critically examine the interplay between structural features, charge-storage mechanisms, and performance metrics—chiefly the specific capacity, rate capability, and cycling stability. Furthermore, we discuss current challenges, primarily poor intrinsic conductivity and volume fluctuations, and highlight innovative strategies aimed at overcoming these limitations, such as through nanostructuring, composite formation, and surface engineering. By shedding light on the opportunities and hurdles in this rapidly progressing field, this work offers a forward-looking perspective on the role of MoS2 in the next generation of high-performance LIBs. Air quality monitoring systems based on Internet of Things (IoT) technology are critical for addressing environmental and public health challenges, but their energy efficiency poses a significant challenge to their autonomous and scalable deployment. This study investigates strategies to enhance the energy efficiency of IoT-based air quality monitoring systems. A comprehensive analysis of sensor types, data transmission protocols, and system architectures was conducted, focusing on their energy consumption. An energy-efficient system was designed using the Smart Air sensor, Zigbee gateway, and Mini UPS, with its performance evaluated through daily energy consumption, backup operation time, and annual energy use. An integrated efficiency index (IEI) was introduced to compare sensor models based on functionality, energy efficiency, and cost. The proposed system achieves a daily energy consumption of 72 W·h, supports up to 10 h of autonomous operation during outages, and consumes 26.28 kW·h annually. The IEI analysis identified the Ajax LifeQuality as the most energy-efficient sensor, while Smart Air offers a cost-effective alternative with broader functionality. The proposed architecture and IEI provide a scalable and sustainable framework for IoT air quality monitoring, with potential applications in smart cities and residential settings. Future research should explore renewable energy integration and predictive energy management. Full article

This paper presents a novel framework for optimizing multimodal large language model (MLLM) inference through task offloading and resource allocation in UAV-assisted satellite edge computing (SEC) networks. MLLMs leverage transformer architectures to integrate heterogeneous data modalities for IoT applications, particularly real-time monitoring in remote areas. However, cloud computing dependency introduces latency, bandwidth, and privacy challenges, while IoT device limitations require efficient distributed computing solutions. SEC, utilizing low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), extends mobile edge computing to provide ubiquitous computational resources for remote IoTDs. We formulate the joint optimization of MLLM task offloading and resource allocation as a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem, minimizing latency and energy consumption while optimizing offloading decisions, power allocation, and UAV trajectories. To address the dynamic SEC environment characterized by satellite mobility, we propose an action-decoupled soft actor–critic (AD-SAC) algorithm with discrete–continuous hybrid action spaces. The simulation results demonstrate that our approach significantly outperforms conventional deep reinforcement learning methods in convergence and system cost reduction compared to baseline algorithms. In Network-on-Chip (NoC) research, the task mapping problem has attracted considerable attention as a core issue influencing system performance. As an NP-hard problem, it remains challenging, and existing algorithms exhibit limitations in both mapping quality and computational efficiency. To address this, a method named ET (Enhanced Coati Optimization Algorithm) is proposed, which leverages the nature-inspired Coati Optimization Algorithm (COA) for task mapping. An incremental hill-climbing strategy is integrated to improve local search capabilities, and a dynamic mechanism for adjusting the exploration–exploitation ratio is designed to better balance global and local searches. Additionally, an initial mapping strategy based on spectral clustering is introduced, which utilizes inter-task communication strength to cluster tasks, thereby improving the quality of the initial population. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, the performance of the ET algorithm is compared and analyzed against various existing algorithms in terms of communication cost, energy consumption, and latency, using both real benchmark task maps and randomly generated task maps. Experimental results demonstrate that the ET algorithm consistently outperforms the compared algorithms across all performance metrics, thereby confirming its superiority in addressing the NoC task mapping problem. The advancement of Internet of Things (IoT) technology has enabled battery-powered devices to be deployed across a wide range of applications; however, it also introduces challenges such as high energy consumption and security vulnerabilities. To address these issues, adiabatic logic circuits offer a promising solution for achieving energy efficiency and enhancing the security of IoT devices. Adiabatic logic circuits are well suited for energy harvesting systems, especially in applications such as sensor nodes, RFID tags, and other IoT implementations. In these systems, the harvested bipolar sinusoidal RF power is directly used as the power supply for the adiabatic logic circuit. However, adiabatic circuits require a peak detector to provide bulk biasing for pMOS transistors. To meet this requirement, a diode-connected MOS transistor-based voltage doubler circuit is used to convert the sinusoidal input into a usable DC signal. In this paper, we propose a novel adiabatic logic design that maintains low power consumption while optimizing energy and current fluctuations across various input transitions. By ensuring uniform and complementary current flow in each transition within the logic circuit’s functional blocks, the design reduces energy variation and enhances resistance against power analysis attacks. Evaluation under different clock frequencies and load capacitances demonstrates that the proposed adiabatic logic circuit exhibits lower fluctuation and improved security, particularly at load capacitances of 50 fF and 100 fF. The results show that the proposed circuit achieves lower power dissipation compared to conventional designs. As an application example, we implemented an ultrasonic transmitter circuit within a LoRaWAN network at the end-node sensor level, which serves as both a communication protocol and system architecture for long-range communication systems. This study explores modernization strategies for existing district heating (DH) networks to enhance their efficiency and sustainability, focusing on achieving net-zero emissions in urban heating systems. Building upon a literature review and expert interviews, we developed a strategic decision-support framework that outlines distinct strategies for retrofitting district heating grids and includes a portfolio analysis. This framework serves as a tool to guide DH operators and stakeholders in selecting well-founded modernization pathways by considering technical, economic, and social dimensions. The review identifies several promising measures, such as reducing operational temperatures at substations, implementing optimized substations, integrating renewable and waste heat sources, implementing thermal energy storage (TES), deploying smart metering and monitoring infrastructure, and expanding networks while addressing public concerns. Additionally, the review highlights the importance of stakeholder engagement and policy support in successfully implementing these strategies. The developed strategic decision-support framework helps practitioners select a tailored modernization strategy aligned with the local context. Furthermore, the findings show the necessity of adopting a comprehensive approach that combines technical upgrades with robust stakeholder involvement and supportive policy measures to facilitate the transition to sustainable urban heating solutions. For example, the development of decision-support tools enables stakeholders to systematically evaluate and select grid modernization strategies, directly helping to reduce transmission losses and lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions contributing to climate goals and enhancing energy security. Indeed, as shown in the reviewed literature, retrofitting high-temperature district heating networks with low-temperature distribution and integrating renewables can lead to near-complete decarbonization of the supplied heat. Additionally, integrating advanced digital technologies, such as smart grid systems, can enhance grid efficiency and enable a greater share of variable renewable energy thus supporting national decarbonization targets. Further investigation could point to the most determining context factors for best choices to improve the sustainability and efficiency of existing DH systems. Full article
