The deformation behavior of polymers is influenced not only by service conditions such as temperature and the strain rate but also significantly by the formation process. However, existing simulation frameworks typically treat injection molding and the in-service mechanical response separately, making it difficult to capture the impact of the thermal history on large deformation behavior. In this study, the deformation behavior of injection-molded polycarbonate (PC) was investigated by accounting for its thermal history during formation, achieved through combined experimental characterization and constitutive modeling. PC specimens were prepared via injection molding followed by annealing at different molding/annealing temperatures and durations. Uniaxial tensile tests were conducted using a Zwick universal testing machine at strain rates of 10−3–10−1 s−1 and temperatures ranging from 293 K to 353 K to obtain stress–strain curves. The effects of the strain rate, testing temperature, and annealing conditions were thoroughly examined. Building upon a previously proposed phenomenological model, a new constitutive framework incorporating thermal history effects during formation was developed to characterize the large deformation behavior of PC. This model was implemented in ABAQUS/Explicit using a user-defined material subroutine. Predicted stress–strain curves exhibit excellent agreement with the experimental data, accurately reproducing elastic behavior, yield phenomena, and strain-softening and strain-hardening stages. Background/Objectives: The porcine respiratory disease complex (PRDC) is a multifaceted, polymicrobial syndrome resulting from a combination of environmental stressors, primary infections (e.g., PRRSV) and secondary infectious agents (viruses and bacteria). PRDC causes severe lung pathology, leading to reduced performance, increased mortality rates, and higher production costs in the global pig industry. Our goal was to conduct a comprehensive study correlating both the anti-PRRSV immune response and 21 secondary infectious agents with PRDC severity. Methods: To this end, PRRSV-negative weaners were vaccinated with a PRRSV-2 MLV and put into a farm with a history of PRDC. Subsequently, anti-PRRSV cellular and antibody responses were monitored pre-vaccination, at 28 days post vaccination (dpv) and during PRDC outbreak (49 dpv). NanoString was used to quantify 21 pathogens within the bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) at the time of necropsy (51 dpv). PRRSV-2 was present in 53 out of 55 pigs, and the other five pathogens (PCMV, PPIV, B. bronchiseptica, G. parasuis, and M. hyorhinis) were detected in BAL samples. Results: Although the uncontrolled settings of field trials complicated data interpretation, multivariate correlation analyses highlighted valuable lessons: (i) high weaning weight predicted animal resilience to disease and high weight gains correlated with the control of the PRRSV-2 field strain; (ii) most pigs cleared MLV strain within 7 weeks, and the field PRRSV-2 strain was the most prevalent lung pathogen during PRDC; (iii) all pigs developed a systemic PRRSV IgG antibody response which correlated with IgG and IgA levels in BAL; (iv) the induction of anti-field strain-neutralizing antibodies by MLV PRRSV-2 vaccination was both late and limited; (v) cellular immune responses were variable but included strong systemic IFN-γ production against the PRRSV-2 field strain; (vi) the most detected lung pathogens correlated with PRRSV-2 viremia or lung loads; (vii) within the six detected pathogens, two viruses, PRRSV-2 and PCMV, significantly correlated with the severity of the clinical outcome. Conclusions: While a simple and conclusive answer to the multifaceted nature of PRDC remains elusive, the key lessons derived from this unique study provide a valuable framework for future research on porcine respiratory diseases. Background: Over the past decade, few echocardiographic investigations have assessed myocardial strain parameters in women with a history of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), and their findings have been inconsistent. Moreover, no study has comprehensively evaluated deformation indices of all biventricular and biatrial chambers in women post-HDP. This study aimed to examine the structural and functional myocardial properties of all cardiac chambers in a cohort of women with prior HDP at six years after delivery. Methods: We analyzed a consecutive cohort of women with previous HDP and compared them with a control group of normotensive healthy women matched for age and body mass index (BMI). Both groups underwent standard transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) supplemented by a detailed speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) evaluation of biventricular and biatrial myocardial deformation, along with carotid ultrasound, at six years postpartum. The primary endpoint was subclinical myocardial dysfunction, defined by impaired left ventricular global longitudinal strain (LV-GLS < 20%), while the secondary endpoint was early carotid atherosclerosis, defined by common carotid artery intima-media thickness (CCA-IMT) ≥ 0.7 mm. Results: The study included 31 women with previous HDP (mean age 42.3 ± 5.9 years) and 30 matched controls without HDP history (mean age 40.8 ± 5.0 years). The average follow-up duration was 6.1 ± 1.3 years postpartum. Despite preserved and comparable systolic function on conventional TTE, most myocardial strain and strain rate measures in both ventricles and atria were significantly reduced in the HDP group compared to controls. Subclinical myocardial dysfunction was detected in 58.1% of women with prior HDP, and 67.7% exhibited increased CCA-IMT (≥0.7 mm). A history of pre-eclampsia (PE) was independently associated with subclinical myocardial dysfunction (HR 4.01, 95% CI 1.05–15.3, p = 0.03). Both third-trimester BMI (HR 1.21, 95% CI 1.07–1.38, p = 0.003) and PE (HR 6.38, 95% CI 1.50–27.2, p = 0.01) independently predicted early carotid atherosclerosis. Notably, a third-trimester BMI above 27 kg/m2 showed optimal sensitivity and specificity for identifying the secondary outcome. Conclusions: A history of PE is independently associated with a higher risk of subclinical myocardial dysfunction and early carotid atherosclerosis at six years postpartum. Full article

Antipredator defenses of bloom-forming cyanobacteria species maximize their fitness but can reduce carbon and energy transfer efficiency to higher trophic levels, making them a key regulator of plankton communities in eutrophic waters. We investigated the grazing responses of the tropical cladoceran Moina micrura to different strains of the cyanobacteria Microcystis aeruginosa and Planktothrix isothrix, using a good food source (green algae Mono-raphidium capricornutum) as a control. Both Microcystis strains grow as unicellular and are microcystins producers; however, this cyanotoxin was not detected on the filamentous Planktothrix strains. M. micrura ingested all cyanobacteria at reduced rates compared to single diets with Monoraphidium. In mixed diets, food type had a significant effect on grazing responses, which differed interspecifically. Planktothrix was more grazed than Microcystis strains. Feeding selectivity on Monoraphidium was negatively affected by the increase of cyanobacteria in the diet. We observed varied responses across treatments, ranging from feeding inhibition to different degrees of tolerance toward cyanobacteria, particularly in non-microcystin-producing species. We also highlight the selectivity of small tropical cladocerans, a pattern that is not yet well documented. These findings emphasize that studies incorporating phyto- and zooplankton with a history of coexistence can provide more meaningful insights into natural ecosystem dynamics. Full article

The 6 February 2023 MW 7.8 and MW 7.6 earthquakes in southeastern Türkiye ruptured more than 400 km of the East Anatolian Fault Zone (EAFZ), producing one of the most destructive seismic sequences in recent history. Here, we integrate InSAR data, a new GNSS velocity field, and small-magnitude earthquakes to investigate the coseismic deformation, rupture geometry, and interseismic strain accumulation along the EAFZ. Using elastic dislocation modeling with a variable-strike, multi-segment fault geometry, we constrain the slip distribution of the mainshocks, showing improved fits to the surface displacement compared to the planar fault model. The MW 7.8 event ruptured a number of fault segments over ~300 km, while the MW 7.6 event activated a more localized fault system with a peak slip exceeding 15 m. We also model two moderate events (MW 5.6 in 2020 and MW 5.3 in 2022) along the southwestern part of the Pütürge segment—an area not ruptured during the 2020 or 2023 sequences. GNSS-derived strain-rate and locking depth estimates reveal strong interseismic coupling and significant strain accumulation in this region, suggesting the potential for a future large earthquake (MW 6.6–7.1). Similarly, the Hatay region, at the southwestern termination of the 2023 rupture, shows a persistent strain accumulation and complex fault interactions involving the Dead Sea Fault and the Cyprus Arc. Our results demonstrate the importance of combining remote sensing and geodetic data to constrain fault kinematics, evaluate rupture segmentation, and assess the seismic hazard in tectonically active regions. Targeted monitoring at rupture terminations—such as the Pütürge and Hatay sectors—may be crucial for anticipating future large-magnitude earthquakes. Full article

Background: Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is frequently underrecognized in late pregnancy, with limited tools for effective risk assessment. This study aimed to evaluate the predictive value of clinical and pelvic floor ultrasound parameters for SUI and construct a validated risk model. Methods: Clinical, obstetric, and pelvic floor ultrasound findings were collected from a total of 521 women in late pregnancy who were enrolled in the study. Based on follow-up results, participants were categorized into SUI and non-SUI groups. Logistic regression analyses were used to identify independent risk factors for SUI, which were incorporated into a nomogram. Results: Four independent predictors were identified: vaginal delivery history (odds ratio [OR] = 2.320), bladder neck funneling (OR = 2.349), bladder neck descent (OR = 1.891), and pubococcygeus muscle contraction strain rate (OR < 0.001). The nomogram achieved an AUC of 0.817 (95% CI: 0.770–0.863) in the training set and 0.761 (95% CI: 0.677–0.845) in the test set. Conclusions: The nomogram based on clinical and pelvic floor ultrasound parameters accurately predicts the risk of SUI during late pregnancy, offering a useful tool for early identification and personalized management. Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a key cause of cervical and oropharyngeal cancers. Despite available vaccines, uptake remains low in Romania due to limited awareness and hesitancy. This study assessed HPV knowledge, vaccination status, and the presence of high-risk strains (16 and 18) in the saliva of dental students from Victor Babeș University in Timișoara. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted between February and March 2024, enrolling 199 dental students. Participants completed a 15-item questionnaire addressing HPV-related knowledge, vaccination status, lifestyle factors, and health history. Saliva samples were collected and analyzed using real-time PCR for the detection of HPV types 16 and 18. Logistic regression analysis was employed to identify predictors of vaccination uptake. Results: Only 10.6% of participants had received the HPV vaccine, although 96.9% acknowledged its safety and efficacy. Awareness was higher among females (88.1%) than males (84.3%), and vaccination rates were significantly greater among students under 25 years old (p = 0.0312). A total of 16.6% reported the presence of papillomas or warts. HPV DNA was detected in 10% of saliva samples. Conclusions: Although awareness of HPV was high, vaccination rates remained low, revealing a gap between knowledge and preventive action. Saliva-based screening shows promise as a non-invasive diagnostic tool, and integrating targeted education and advocacy into dental curricula may enhance public health outcomes in Romania. Background: The rise in antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae is internationally recognised as a critical public health concern, with limited treatment options available. The urgency of this issue prompted the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control to establish ‘EURO-GASP’ to monitor trends in resistance and address developments. Comprehensive data on AMR strains in people living with HIV (PLHIV) is limited, especially in Cyprus. Objectives: To analyse trends in rates of resistant N. gonorrhoeae infections and identify any correlations between patient factors that may contribute to such in PLHIV in The Republic of Cyprus. Methods: We conducted a retrospective chart review study on N. gonorrhoea resistance among PLHIV from the Gregorios HIV reference clinic in Larnaca, Cyprus, between 2015 and 2023. Antimicrobial susceptibility was assessed via disc diffusion or gradient strip method on GC II agar against a non-homogenous panel of antibiotic preparations, based on standard laboratory practice variation. Demographic and clinical data, including antibiograms, treatments and test of cure, were recorded. Statistical analysis was performed using Stata v16, with significance set at p < 0.05. The study received approval from the Cyprus National Bioethics Committee. Results: A total of 45 isolates from 39 patients were analysed, with 62% of these demonstrating resistance to at least one antibiotic. Resistance rates were not shown to change over time. We identified a statistically significant linear association between a person having a history of an STI and the number of antibiotics which the isolate is resistant to (β = 1.2; p: 0.004). Notably, a single isolate demonstrated resistance to ceftriaxone, the first-line treatment currently recommended in both Europe and the United States. This finding is particularly alarming given the critical role of ceftriaxone in the management of gonorrhoea. Conclusions: Whilst there has been no increase in resistance rates over time, the detection of ceftriaxone-resistant N. gonorrhoeae is a significant public health concern. Given that having a history of an STI makes a person more likely to develop a resistant infection, PLHIV or those who engage in risky sexual behaviours are particularly vulnerable. There is a pressing need to enhance surveillance and implement routine susceptibility testing in Cyprus, given the country’s role as a major international hub for travel and migration. Molecular analysis can further improve our understanding. Additionally, the global public health community must urgently prioritise the development of novel therapeutic agents for the treatment of gonorrhoea. Full article

Background/Objectives: Unexplained infertility is a worldwide problem affecting a significant proportion of couples of reproductive age. Recent studies suggest that alterations in the vaginal microbiota are related to female infertility, while supplementation with some probiotic strains has been shown to improve pregnancy rates in couples experiencing this problem. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of oral administration of Ligilactobacillus salivarius CECT5713 on pregnancy success rates in couples with unexplained infertility prior to in vitro fertilization (IVF). Methods: Seventy couples were randomized to receive either a placebo or a probiotic intervention (one capsule per day containing an excipient only or 3 × 109 viable cells of L. salivarius CECT5713 plus an excipient, respectively); 57 couples completed the study. Baseline data on demographics, health status (including gynecological and reproductive history), and lifestyle habits were collected. Vaginal swabs and semen samples were obtained from each couple before the intervention and immediately prior to IVF or upon confirmed pregnancy and were analyzed for microbiological (using both culture-dependent and -independent methods) and immunological profiles. Results: Oral administration of L. salivarius CECT5713 in couples with unexplained infertility scheduled for IVF resulted in a significantly higher pregnancy success rate (48.1%) compared to the placebo group (20.0%) (one-tailed Chi-square test; p < 0.024). The probiotic intervention improved both vaginal and semen immunological profiles, with no substantial changes observed in their microbial composition. Conclusions: These preliminary findings support the potential of L. salivarius CECT5713 supplementation to enhance fertility outcomes in couples with unexplained infertility. Full article

Hamstring strain injuries (HSIs) are the most common time loss injury sustained in male Australian Football League (AFL) athletes, causing significant financial cost, time cost, and impaired team and individual performance. In a squad of 42 players, HSIs accounted for 4.86 new injuries sustained by players per club per AFL season in 2020. This is consistent with injury reporting over the last decade in AFL, despite best efforts to reduce the rate. This scoping review sought to firstly identify the reported hamstring injury prevention risk factors in elite AFL, discern the impact of these factors, and map the gaps in the current literature using a biopsychosocial understanding of injury prevention. The scoping review process was based on the Askey and O’Malley framework. Five relevant online databases (MEDLINE, Proquest, CINAHL, SPORTdiscuss, and EMBASE) were systematically searched using a series of Boolean and operator terms following the PRISMA-ScR protocol using the criteria: (1) assessing male professional/elite athletes in AFL; (2) written in English and peer-reviewed; (3) full text available; and (4) published after 2006. Only manuscripts that fit the search terms and inclusion criteria were retained in the scoping review. Following an initial search, 246 potential studies were identified, with 12 studies meeting the inclusion criteria after full-text screening. The risk factors examined were subclassified into modifiable and non-modifiable categories. Modifiable factors include high-speed running exposure, gluteus medius activation, eccentric hamstring strength, shorter bicep femoris fascicle length, use of interchange, and hamstring stiffness. Non-modifiable factors include previous history of HSI and limb injury, age, and size of injury on MRI. This scoping review highlights the need for continued monitoring of high-speed running volumes as rapid increases in completed distances present as a substantial risk factor. The modifiable mechanistic risk factors of eccentric hamstring strength and hamstring stiffness were identified as important components of player screening to reduce the risk of future HSI. Risk factors identified throughout will help develop comprehensive injury profiling for athletes. Further research is warranted to develop a holistic approach to injury profiling. Full article

Group A rotaviruses (RVAs) are a major cause of acute dehydrating diarrhea in infants and young animals worldwide. In rabbits, RVAs are associated with enteric disease, likely in combination with other pathogens. We report the identification and characterization of a lapine RVA strain in an Italian rabbit breeding farm. Increased mortality rates associated with enteric symptoms were reported in the facility in post-weaning rabbits around 40 days of age. By quantitative RT-PCR, an RVA strain was identified in the intestinal contents of deceased rabbits. A PCR-based enrichment protocol coupled with Nanopore sequencing allowed the reconstruction of the nearly complete genome of a rabbit RVA strain, Rabbit-wt/ITA/36-9/2022/G3P[14], with a genotype constellation (G3-P[14]-I2-R2-C2-M3-A9-N2-T6-E5-H3) conserved among lapine RVAs. Each of the 11 gene segments displayed high nucleotide identity and phylogenetic clustering with lapine rotavirus strains, as well as two Belgian human G3P[14] strains, which had been shown to have a zoonotic (lapine) origin. However, the NSP2 gene of strain 36-9 clustered closer with a group of rare human G3P[9] strains, suggesting a common path during their evolution. Gathering sequence data on animal RVAs is pivotal to reconstructing the history of homologous and heterologous RVAs in various mammals, including humans. Full article

This study established a dynamic impact simulation system for a coral limestone cement composite subjected to bidirectional stress confinement conditions by using a coupled method of continuous medium FDM (a coupled continuum-discontinuum approach integrating finite difference continuum modeling (FDM) and the discrete element method (DEM) granular analysis), and verified its accuracy through indoor experiments. The study first conducted dynamic mechanical performance tests on reef limestone concrete using an SHPB experimental device, exploring the effects of the strain-rate governed high-rate response, energy evolution, and failure modes. Subsequently, an FDM-DEM coupled model was used to simulate the impact-induced behavior of concrete at multiaxial stress conditions and constraint conditions, analyzing the strain-rate dependent performance of concrete exposed to biaxial monotonic loading. Test outcomes indicate that the increase in strain rate significantly enhanced the dynamic peak stress, and the collapse behavior shifted from type I to type II. As static loading in the σ2 direction increased, the dynamic peak stress in the σ1 direction decreased, while the dynamic peak stress in the σ2 direction increased, indicating that the constraint stress in the σ2 direction had an inhibitory effect on the sample’s failure. Through the time-history monitoring and analysis of cracks, it was found that the internal crack growth rate accelerated as the stress increased, while the crack growth tended to stabilize when the stress decreased. Additionally, this study explored the effect of stress constraints on the fragmentation patterns, revealing changes in the failure modes and crack distributions of the sample under different stress states, providing a theoretical basis and technical support for island and reef construction and engineering protection. Optimizing Cost-Effective Larval Diets for Mass Rearing of Aedes Mosquitoes in Vector Control Programs

(1) Background: Larval diet composition significantly influences the developmental, physiological, and reproductive traits of Ae. albopictus and Ae. aegypti, major arbovirus vectors. Optimizing larval nutrition is essential for mass-rearing programs supporting the sterile insect technique and incompatible insect technique. This study evaluated the effects of three larval diets on key fitness traits, including pupation rate, male flight ability, adult longevity, female fecundity, pupal size, and wing length, which are critical for the success of SIT and IIT programs. (2) Methods: Ae. albopictus (GT strain) and Ae. aegypti (AEG strain) were reared on three diets with varying protein sources: diet 1 (≈1.23 dollars/kg; porcine liver/shrimp/yeast = 6:3:1), the IAEA-recommended diet; diet 2 (≈1.78 dollars/kg; bovine liver/shrimp/yeast = 6:3:1), a modified IAEA diet; and diet 3 (≈0.55 dollars/kg; tortoise food), a low-cost laboratory formulation. Life history traits were assessed using standardized protocols, and data were analyzed with ANOVA and Tukey’s post hoc test. (3) Results: Diet 3 consistently improved pupation rates, adult longevity, and male flight ability compared with diet 2. Mosquitoes reared on diets 1 and 3 exhibited significantly larger pupae and longer wings, while diet 2 performed sub-optimally. Adult eclosion rates (~100%) remained high across all diets. Male flight ability varied by species, with Ae. albopictus performing best on diet 1 and Ae. aegypti on diet 3. Female fecundity was diet-dependent, with diet 1 favoring Ae. albopictus and diet 3 benefitting Ae. aegypti. Longevity was highest in mosquitoes reared on diet 3, with a median survival of 19.5 days for GT males and 37.5 days for GT females. (4) Conclusions: Diet 3 emerged as the most cost-effective option, enhancing key fitness traits essential for SIT and IIT. Future studies should refine nutrient formulations and validate findings under field conditions to optimize mass-rearing efficiency in vector control. Full article

Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV) is one of the most significant infectious agents threatening the global pig industry. Due to its high mutation and recombination rates, the prevalence of PRRSV in domestic pig populations is complex. To better understand the epidemiology of PRRSV, we conducted a large-scale investigation in eastern China, focusing on pig farms with a history of high abortion rates. A total of 14,934 pig samples were collected from 11 sow farms and 53 fattening farms across three provinces. Among these, 13.0% of the collected samples tested positive for PRRSV, with specific prevalence rates of 19.7% in sows and 12.4% in piglets. Genetic evolution analysis of the GP5 gene from 43 PRRSV strains identified in this study revealed that NADC30-like, NADC34-like, and HP-PRRSV were the predominant lineages in domestic pig farms. The NADC30-like genotype was the most dominant and had evolved into three subgenotypes, while the NADC34-like strains had diverged into two subgenotypes. Further analysis of the Nsp2 gene from 18 strains indicated that the NSP2 gene of multiple NADC34-like strains was closely related to that of the NADC30-like, suggesting that the NADC34-like strains are primarily recombinant viruses. Sequence comparison of the Nsp2 gene showed that both NADC30-like and NADC34-like viruses share 111 amino acid deletions at positions 322–433 and 21 amino acid deletions at positions 539–558 in the Nsp2 gene coding region. For the first time, the pathogenicity of a representative NADC34-like virus isolated in China was evaluated in pregnant sow. The results showed that infected sows exhibited an increased body temperature, ear cyanosis, and typical edema and cyanosis of the external genitalia. Moreover, all infected sows experienced miscarriage, with 100% of the aborted piglets being stillbirths exhibiting a high virus load. These findings indicate that this NADC34-like virus is highly virulent to sows. Full article

Rapid Detection of Panton–Valentine Leukocidin Production in Clinical Isolates of Staphylococcus aureus from Saxony and Brandenburg and Their Molecular Characterisation

Panton–Valentine leukocidin (PVL) is a staphylococcal toxin associated with chronic/recurrent skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) and necrotizing pneumonia. Its detection in clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus warrants aggressive therapy and infection control measures. However, PVL detection relies on molecular methods of limited use, especially in outpatient or resource-poor settings. In order to aid the development of a lateral flow (LF) test for PVL, clinical isolates from SSTIs were collected in 2020/21 at three laboratories in two cities in the Eastern part of Germany. After the exclusion of duplicate and serial isolates, 83 isolates were eligible. These were tested using an experimental LF test for PVL production. They were also characterized using DNA microarrays, facilitating the detection of virulence and resistance markers as well as the assignment to clonal complexes and epidemic/pandemic strains. Thirty-nine isolates (47%) were PVL-positive, and the LF results were in 81 cases (97.6%) concordant with genotyping. One false-positive and one false-negative case were observed. This translated into a diagnostic sensitivity of 0.974 and a diagnostic specificity of 0.977. The most common PVL-positive MSSA lineages were CC152 (n = 6), CC121 (n = 4), and CC5 and CC30 (each n = 2). Thirty isolates (36%) were mecA-positive. The MRSA rate among PVL-negatives was 20% (nine isolates), but among the PVL-positives, it was as high as 54% (n = 21). The most common PVL-MRSA strains were CC398-MRSA-VT (n = 5), CC5-MRSA-IV “Sri Lanka Clone” (n = 4), CC8-MRSA-[mec IV+Hg] “Latin American USA300” (n = 4), and CC22-MRSA-IV (PVL+/tst+) (n = 2). While the PVL rate was similar just like the German isolates from a previous study a decade before, the MRSA rate among PVL-positives was clearly higher. All PVL-MRSA strains detected, as well as the most common methicillin-susceptible lineage (CC152), are known to be common locally in other parts of the world, and might, thus, be regarded as travel-associated. Therefore, patients with suspected PVL-associated disease should be asked for their history of travel or migration, and, in case of hospitalization, they should be treated as MRSA cases until proven otherwise.
