The construction sector is central to achieving the objectives of the European Green Deal (EGD). While existing research on transition risks predominantly focuses on project- or firm-level challenges, less is known about the transition risks implied by high-level EU policy documents. This study addresses this gap by systematically analysing 101 EGD-related policy and guidance documents published between 2019 and February 2025. A mixed human–AI content analysis approach was applied, combining human expert manual coding with automated validation using large language models (Kimi K2 and GLM 4.6). The final dataset contains 2752 coded risk references organised into eight main categories and twenty-six subcategories. Results show that transition risks are most frequently associated with environmental, economic, and legislative domains, with Climate Change Impact, Cost of Transition, Pollution, Investment Risks, and Implementation Variability emerging as the most prominent risks across the corpus. Technological and social risks appear less frequently but highlight important systemic and contextual vulnerabilities. Overall, analysis of the EGD policy texts reveals the green transition as being constrained not only by environmental pressures but also by financial feasibility and execution capacity. The study provides a structured, policy-level risk profile of the EGD and demonstrates the value of hybrid human–LLM analysis for large-scale policy content analysis and interpretation. These insights support policymakers and industry stakeholders to anticipate structural uncertainties that may affect the construction sector’s transition toward a low-carbon, circular economy. This study investigates how financial constraints influence environmental innovation and how such innovation contributes to business sustainability and competitive advantage. Existing research has primarily examined financial constraints in isolation, leaving a gap in understanding how firms can transform financial challenges into a strategic opportunity through environmental innovation. Drawing on data from 280 firms across six countries (2012–2024), this study employed a quantitative panel regression approach to test the mediating role of environmental innovation and the moderating effects of management quality and institutional pressures. The analysis revealed that financial constraints significantly hinder environmental innovation, while environmental innovation strongly enhances business sustainability and competitiveness. Furthermore, both management quality and institutional pressures weakened the negative impact of financial constraints, and environmental innovation partially mediates the relationship between financial constraints and business sustainability. The findings demonstrate that firms can achieve sustainability-driven competitive advantage even under financial stress through effective leadership and supportive institutional environments. This study contributes to theory by integrating the Resource-Based View, Institutional Theory, and Stakeholder Theory to explain innovation resilience under constraint. The study offers novel insights into the financial–sustainability interface. Full article

Poultry farming ranks among the most rapidly expanding sectors of global agriculture, significantly contributing to food availability, improved dietary quality, and economic stability in rural areas. The sector’s efficiency stems from short production cycles and the ability to convert agricultural by-products into high-quality protein, energy, and essential nutrients. Despite these benefits, the growing scale of poultry production raises serious environmental concerns, including intensive use of land and water, high feed demand, and impacts on greenhouse gas emissions, soil nutrient balance, and water quality. This study examines the poultry industry in the Republic of Moldova, where it forms a crucial component of the agricultural economy. Drawing on recent statistical data and scientific literature, the article reviews production dynamics, farm structures, and technological adoption, offering a comprehensive overview of the sector’s current state. The findings highlight both the sector’s essential role in strengthening food security and rural livelihoods and its susceptibility to resource limitations and environmental pressures. The analysis emphasizes the importance of implementing precision livestock farming technologies, improving biosecurity, and promoting environmentally sustainable practices as key strategies for long-term sector resilience. These insights aim to support policymakers and stakeholders in developing effective strategies to ensure a competitive and sustainable poultry industry in Moldova. Full article

Food loss and waste (FLW) is a chronic problem across food systems worldwide, with meat being one of the most resource-intensive and perishable categories. The perishable character of meat, combined with complex cold chain requirements and consumer behavior, makes the sector particularly sensitive to inefficiencies and loss across all stages from production to consumption. This review synthesizes the latest advancements in new preservation technologies and supply chain efficiency strategies to minimize meat wastage and also outlines current challenges and future directions. New preservation technologies, such as high-pressure processing, cold plasma, pulsed electric fields, and modified atmosphere packaging, have substantial potential to extend shelf life while preserving nutritional and sensory quality. Active and intelligent packaging, bio-preservatives, and nanomaterials act as complementary solutions to enhance safety and quality control. At the same time, blockchain, IoT sensors, AI, and predictive analytics-driven digitalization of the supply chain are opening new opportunities in traceability, demand forecasting, and cold chain management. Nevertheless, regulatory uncertainty, high capital investment requirements, heterogeneity among meat types, and consumer hesitancy towards novel technologies remain significant barriers. Furthermore, the scalability of advanced solutions is limited in emerging nations due to digital inequalities. Convergent approaches that combine technical innovation with policy harmonization, stakeholder capacity building, and consumer education are essential to address these challenges. System-level strategies based on circular economy principles can further reduce meat loss and waste, while enabling by-product valorization and improving climate resilience. By integrating preservation innovations and digital tools within the framework of UN Sustainable Development Goal 12.3, the meat sector can make meaningful progress towards sustainable food systems, improved food safety, and enhanced environmental outcomes. This study investigates the environmental and economic dynamics of sustainable aviation through the perspectives of senior executives in Türkiye’s civil aviation sector. As global aviation continues to face increasing pressure to decarbonize, understanding how industry leaders perceive and respond to carbon emission challenges is critical. The research employs a qualitative methodology based on semi-structured interviews with ten executives across airlines, airports, and aviation authorities. Using Python-based data mining techniques and thematic analysis, three core themes emerged: (1) sustainable aviation experience and economic dimensions; (2) carbon emissions reduction and efficient aviation systems; (3) sustainable energy and alternative fuel technologies. Findings reveal that while environmental sustainability is a growing concern, operational costs, technological constraints, and regulatory uncertainties significantly influence implementation. Stakeholders emphasized the importance of coordinated action among governments, industry, and international organizations, especially in scaling Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs) and enhancing infrastructure for electric and hydrogen-powered aircraft. The study concludes that achieving net-zero aviation by 2050 requires an integrated approach that balances technological innovation, policy incentives, and stakeholder engagement. This multidimensional insight contributes to the ongoing discourse on low-carbon transition strategies in aviation, offering policy-relevant implications for developing countries. Full article

(1) Background: As social infrastructures, cemeteries have always played a central role in various human cultures. The changing function of cemeteries and the recognition of their potential as green spaces have resulted in the fact that cemeteries are a subject of considerable urban planning research. However, there still is a knowledge gap for the case of Vienna. In this study, from the perspective of urban planning and the city of Vienna as an operator of interdenominational cemeteries on the one hand, and of operators of denominational cemeteries on the other hand, consideration of cemeteries in strategic urban planning is discussed, and prospects for the future are outlined. (2) Methods: A qualitative content analysis of relevant strategic planning documents and a qualitative theme-centred stakeholder survey using guideline interviews were conducted. The results were put into the context of the international literature. (3) Results: Cemeteries are an integral part of urban morphology and fabric. Interdenominational cemeteries serve multiple purposes, for example, as places of remembrance, leisure and recreation. In addition, the growing importance of interdenominational cemeteries in particular as green infrastructure for the public is evident. (4) Conclusions: Despite population growth and the associated pressure on land and densification, no changes such as the decommissioning of cemeteries are to be expected in the medium term. As the concept of innovative, coordinated, green, open and shared development gains popularity, small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have come to acknowledge green product innovation (GPI) as essential to sustaining competitive advantage, embedding it within their strategic frameworks. However, most SMEs heavily rely on the continued support of stakeholders, unaware that organisational learning, such as perceived relative advantage (PRA) and innovation capabilities, is the core competitive strategy for achieving green transformation. Drawing on institutional theory and organisational learning theory, this study examines how institutional pressures influence innovation capability and PRA, which in turn drive GPI and corporate reputation. This study analyses data from a survey of 330 Chinese construction SMEs using structural equation modelling. The results show that GPI significantly enhances corporate reputation. Innovation capability and PRA act as mediators in the relationship between institutional pressure and GPI. These findings highlight the importance of organisational learning and explain the critical role of the institutional environment in promoting GPI and thus enhancing corporate reputation. This research provides pathways for SMEs in the construction industry to enhance sustainability while gaining a long-term competitive advantage, contributing to the building of ecological civilisation and a community with a shared future for mankind. In response to mounting resource and environmental pressures in the textile industry, this study investigates the feasibility of fiber-to-fiber closed-loop recycling for used firefighting protective clothing—a waste stream characterized by material homogeneity and large-scale disposal. Employing a mixed-methods approach combining stakeholder questionnaires, field investigations (n = 3650), and performance testing of retired aramid fabrics, this research systematically evaluates the technical, market, and systemic potential for circular regeneration. Results demonstrate strong multi-stakeholder support (over 89%) and significant consumer willingness to purchase recycled products (81.01–84% across categories), while material tests confirm the retained flame resistance and mechanical properties of the fabrics, enabling high-value applications. By constructing an integrated framework spanning technical, policy, market, and cultural dimensions, and proposing strategies of “targeted recycling” and “value reconstruction,” this work confirms the commercial viability and environmental benefit of recycling firefighting gear. It further offers a transferable model for advancing the circularity of other safety and protective textiles, with key innovations lying in its comprehensive full-chain assessment and the concurrent validation of stakeholder dynamics and material performance. Regional water systems face growing pressure from climate variability, water scarcity, and increasingly complex wastewater pollution. These challenges require governance models that integrate institutional coordination with effective technological solutions. This review is based on a structured analysis of peer-reviewed literature indexed in Scopus, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect, covering publications from approximately 2014 to 2025. The findings show that clearly defined institutional roles, basin-level coordination, stable financing mechanisms, and active stakeholder participation significantly improve governance outcomes. Technological advances such as membrane filtration, advanced oxidation processes, nature-based treatment systems, and digital monitoring platforms enhance treatment efficiency, resilience, and opportunities for resource recovery. Regions differ widely in their ability to adopt these solutions, mainly due to variations in governance coherence, investment capacity, and climate-adaptation readiness. The review highlights the need for policy frameworks that align institutional reforms with technological modernization, including the adoption of basin-based planning, digital decision-support systems, and circular water-economy principles. These measures provide actionable guidance for policymakers and regional authorities seeking to strengthen long-term water security and wastewater management performance. Full article

Background/Objectives: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the primary indication for antibiotic use in nursing homes (NHs); yet inappropriate prescribing, including incorrect initiation, excessive prophylactic prescribing and prolonged treatment duration, is common. This study aimed to identify key determinants of appropriate antibiotic prescribing for UTIs in NHs by exploring the behaviours and perspectives of relevant stakeholders. Methods: Interviews and focus group sessions with regard to a purposive sample of 4 NHs and healthcare professionals were conducted between June 2023 and April 2024 in Flanders (Belgium). The topic guide was developed based on the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF). A combination of deductive and inductive coding was used to identify behavioural determinants within each TDF domain. Key behavioural determinants were identified based on their importance, relevance, and feasibility. Results: We conducted 31 semi-structured interviews with residents/relatives (n = 13), physicians (n = 9), pharmacists (n = 10), and NH management (n = 5) and held 4 focus group sessions with nurses (n = 16) and nurse aides (n = 10). Appropriate antibiotic prescribing for UTIs in NHs was influenced by a complex interplay of behavioural determinants. Key behavioural determinants included lack of knowledge of guidelines, lack of self-reflection and monitoring, fear of missing complications, feelings of powerlessness, prioritising residents’ comfort, hierarchical relations with treating physicians being dominant, social pressure to prescribe, and the NH as a challenging context. Conclusions: This study identified key behavioural determinants that should be targeted to optimise antibiotic prescribing for UTIs in NHs. These findings underscore the need to conduct a theory-informed, multifaceted intervention to support behaviour change across professional roles and improve antimicrobial stewardship in this setting. This paper presents a systematic literature review (SLR) of research on strategic positioning of companies and the measurement of greenwashing in sustainability reporting. Its main aim is to synthesize and organize the existing literature, identify key research gaps, and outline directions for future studies. Drawing on a rigorous content analysis of 88 studies, we delineate strategic typologies of greenwashing in sustainability reporting and examine content-analysis-based measurement approaches used to detect it. Our SLR shows that most strategic typologies draw on theories such as legitimacy theory, impression management theory, signaling theory, and stakeholder theory. Several studies adopt a four-quadrant matrix with varying conceptual dimensions, while others classify strategic responses to institutional pressures along a passive–active continuum. However, the evidence suggests that to assume that companies uniformly pursue sustainability reporting strategies is a major oversimplification. The findings also indicate that the literature proposes a variety of innovative, content-analysis-based approaches aimed at capturing divergences between communicative claims and organizational realities—most notably, discrepancies between disclosure and measurable performance, and between symbolic and substantive sustainability actions, as well as the identification of selective or manipulative communication practices that may signal greenwashing. Analytical techniques commonly focus on linguistic and visual cues in sustainability reports, including tone (sentiment and narrative framing), readability (both traditional readability indices and machine learning–based textual complexity measures), and visual content (selective emphasis, imagery framing, and graphic distortions). We also synthesize studies that document empirically verified instances of greenwashing and contrast them with research that, in our view, relies on overly simplified or untested assumptions. Based on this SLR, we identify central theoretical and methodological priorities for advancing the study of greenwashing in sustainability reporting and propose a research agenda to guide future research. Background/Objectives: Informal caregivers play a crucial role in healthcare, but when caregiving ends the “post-caregivers” often remain invisible and unsupported. Post-caregivers face needs such as reconstructing their identity and finding space and time to grieve. This study aimed to design a support network for informal post-caregivers by exploring perceptions of diverse stakeholders. Methods: A qualitative inductive study was conducted using three focus groups (n = 15; ages 35–70; 12 women, 3 men) held online between June and July 2023. Participants included palliative care team members, home support professionals, general practitioners, informal caregivers, post-caregivers, and members of civil society. A semi-structured guide was used, and narratives were analyzed with a Narrative Medicine-informed approach and thematic analysis. Results: Community-For-Care emerged as an overarching and distinctive concept that, while aligned with the ethos of Compassionate Communities, specifically addresses the transition after caregiving ends, a phase largely absent from existing models. It symbolizes the “living forces of the community” mobilized to accompany informal post-caregivers through identity reconstruction, bereavement, and reintegration. Three interrelated thematic axes structure this concept: (1) Compassion Axis—emphasizing a compassionate community that values caregiving; (2) Coordinated Action Axis—highlighting coordinated, continuous support across healthcare and community services; and (3) Care Literacy Axis—underscoring education and training for caregivers, post-caregivers, and professionals. These axes dynamically interact to empower post-caregivers and stitch the holes in the support network. Conclusions: A community-centered, post-caregiver-focused framework such as Community-For-Care offers a novel extension of compassionate communities by directly addressing the loneliness, identity rupture, and invisibility that often characterize the transition after caregiving. Reinforcing compassion, coordinated action, and care literacy can enable communities to better acknowledge the contributions and ongoing needs of post-caregivers, supporting their emotional recovery, social reintegration, and reconstruction of daily life. By integrating these three axes into community practice, the model introduces a post-care-specific structure that can enhance well-being, reduce preventable health decline, and relieve pressure on formal services by mobilizing local, civic, and relational assets. Small Island Developing States (SIDS) face ongoing challenges in balancing agricultural sustainability with economic growth due to limited land resources, rapid urbanisation, climate change, and reliance on food imports. This study explores the evolution of land use and the future of agriculture in Mauritius from 2002 to 2022, using satellite imagery, policy reviews, and stakeholder interviews. Findings show a 9% decrease in agricultural and non-agricultural vegetation cover, alongside a doubling of built-up areas from 10% to 20%, indicating continued land conversion pressures. The analysis highlights major barriers to agricultural sustainability, including declining food self-sufficiency, an ageing farming population, and slow movements towards sustainable practices caused by low profitability and weak institutional support. Diverging priorities among government agencies, sugar companies, smallholder farmers, and NGOs further hinder coordinated policy efforts. To address these challenges, the study identifies strategies for aligning economic and environmental goals through integrated land-use planning, boosting productivity, and providing targeted support for sustainable ecological farming systems. Policy recommendations include protecting agricultural land, encouraging agroecological practices, alleviating labour shortages, and promoting multi-stakeholder engagement within policy development. Overall, this research enhances understanding of land-use dynamics and agricultural resilience in SIDS, offering practical insights for policymakers and practitioners working towards sustainable food systems amid spatial and climatic constraints. This study investigates how stakeholder pressures (SSTPR) prompt SMEs to perform green innovation (GRNI) activities by grounding the analysis exclusively in stakeholder theory. It employs a survey questionnaire to gather information from 141 top- and mid-level executives working in various SME manufacturing firms (listed in DSE, CSE, foreign SMEs) in Bangladesh. The structural equation modeling (SEM) technique is used to analyze data and test hypotheses. The study’s findings reveal that SSTPR, both primary and secondary, have a significant positive impact on the firm’s degree of GRNI. Moreover, it has also been found that environmental commitment (ENVC) has a positive moderating effect on the relation between stakeholder influences and GRNI. On the other hand, environmental ethics (ENVE) has a partial mediation impact on this relationship. The results shed light on the crucial role of stakeholder influence, ENVC, and ENVE in promoting GRNI behavior. These findings will fill knowledge gaps on the factors that drive SMEs’ investments in GRNIs with insightful implications for regulators, managers, and policymakers. This study also assists Bangladesh’s sustainable agenda by bolstering green and sustainable innovation activities. Full article

Due to its significant environmental impact, the built environment faces growing pressure to transition toward more sustainable practices. Biomimicry, a novel field of practice that entails design and innovation inspired by nature’s time-tested strategies, offers a promising pathway to enhance sustainability in the construction industry. Hence, this study examines the perceived benefits of applying biomimicry principles in the construction sector, aiming to identify the key dimensions that underpin its transformative potential. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted using data collected through a structured questionnaire survey, which contained 18 indicators derived from a targeted literature synthesis. The questionnaire was administered to 120 purposively sampled, duly registered, practising construction and biomimicry professionals in South Africa. The instrument captured perceptions of the environmental, economic, and socio-functional benefits of adopting and implementing biomimicry. The EFA revealed four principal factors: socio-economic and health, ecological resilience, performance enhancement and green market efficiency. These four factors cumulatively accounted for approximately 70% of the total variance, indicating a strong internal structure of perceived benefits. The findings demonstrate that stakeholders perceive biomimicry as a tool for reducing environmental footprints and as a catalyst for innovation, circularity, and regenerative design practices in the built environment. This research contributes to the emerging discourse on biomimicry in the built environment by providing empirical evidence on its multifaceted value. It highlights the importance of integrating natural design intelligence into construction to foster more adaptive, efficient, resilient and sustainable systems. The paper recommends policy support, interdisciplinary collaboration, and further research to operationalise biomimicry within mainstream construction processes. Full article
