Although cemented carbides have been manufactured by the powder metallurgy (P/M) technology for over a century now, systematic developmental efforts are still underway. In the present study, tool life improvements in metal grooving applications are the key objective. Four PVD-coated cemented carbides compositions, dedicated to groove steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and aluminium alloys, have been newly designed, along with their manufacturing conditions. Physical, mechanical and chemical characteristics—such as sintered density, modulus of elasticity, hardness, fracture toughness, WC grain size, and the chemical composition of the substrate material, as well as the chemical composition, microhardness, structure, and thickness of the coatings—have been studied. A series of grooving tests have also been conducted to assess whether modifications to the thus far marketed tool materials, tool geometries, and coatings can improve cutting performance. In order to compare the laboratory and application properties of the investigated materials with currently produced by reputable companies, commercial inserts have also been tested. The experimental results obtained indicate that the newly developed grooving inserts exhibit excellent microstructural characteristics, high hardness, fracture toughness, and wear resistance and that they show slightly longer tool life compared to the commercial ones. Temperature dependence of the deformation behavior and the residual stress in 304 stainless steel beams with single-sided Al2O3 coatings of varying thicknesses are analyzed using the image relative method. The results demonstrate that, due to the mismatch of thermal expansion coefficient between the coating and substrate, residual stresses were produced, which caused the bending deformation of the single-side coated specimens. Moreover, coating thickness significantly influences the deformation behavior of specimens. Within the elastic deformation regime, the single-side coated specimens would exhibit alternating bending and flattening deformations in response to the fluctuations of temperature. The higher ratio of the coating thickness to the substrate thickness is, the smaller bending curvature of specimens becomes, and the lower residual compressive stresses in the coating are. For the specimens undergoing elastic deformation, residual stresses can be effectively calculated through the Stoney’s formula. However, as the thickness of coating is close to that of substrate (the corresponding specimens would be regarded as the laminated composites), plastic deformation occurs. And the residual stresses in those specimens vary along the direction of the thickness and the length. In addition, the residual stress decreased with increasing temperature because of the stress relaxation. Full article

We investigated the protective properties of ultrathin laminated coatings, comprising three pairs of Al2O3 and TiO2 sublayers with coating thicknesses < 150 nm, deposited on AISI 310 stainless steel (SS) and Si (100) substrates at 80–500 °C by atomic layer deposition. The coatings were chemically etched and subjected to corrosion, ultrasound, and thermal shock tests. The coating etching resistance efficiency (Re) was determined by measuring via XRF the change in the coating sublayer mass thickness after etching in hot 80% H2SO4. The maximum Re values of ≥98% for both alumina and titania sublayers were obtained for the laminates deposited at 250–400 °C on both substrates. In these coatings, the titania sublayers were crystalline. The lowest Re values of 15% and 50% for the alumina and titania sublayers, respectively, were measured for laminate grown at 80 °C on silicon. The coatings deposited at 160–200 °C demonstrated a delay in the increase of Re values, attributed to the changes in the titania sublayers before full crystallization. Coatings grown at higher temperatures were also more resistant to ultrasound and liquid nitrogen treatments. In contrast, coatings deposited at 125 °C on SS had better corrosion protection, as demonstrated via electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and a standard immersion test in FeCl3 solution. This study investigates the development of silver (Ag)-doped zirconia (ZrO2) coatings deposited on 316LVM stainless steel via the unbalanced magnetron sputtering technique. The oxygen content in the Ar/O2 gas mixture was systematically varied (12.5%, 25%, 37.5%, and 50%) to assess its influence on the resulting coating properties. In response to the growing demand for biomedical implants with improved durability and biocompatibility, the objective was to develop coatings that enhance both wear and corrosion resistance in physiological environments. The effects of silver incorporation and oxygen concentration on the structural, tribological, and electrochemical behavior of the coatings were systematically analyzed. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was employed to identify crystalline phases, while atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to characterize surface topography prior to wear testing. Wear resistance was evaluated using a ball-on-plane tribometer under simulated prosthetic motion, applying a 5 N load with a bone pin as the counter body. Corrosion resistance was assessed through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in a physiological solution. Additionally, tribocorrosive performance was investigated by coupling tribological and electrochemical tests in Ringer’s lactate solution, simulating dynamic in vivo contact conditions. The results demonstrate that Ag doping, combined with increased oxygen content in the sputtering atmosphere, significantly improves both wear and corrosion resistance. Notably, the ZrO2-Ag coating deposited with 50% O2 exhibited the lowest wear volume (0.086 mm3) and a minimum coefficient of friction (0.0043) under a 5 N load. This same coating also displayed superior electrochemical performance, with the highest charge transfer resistance (38.83 kΩ·cm2) and the lowest corrosion current density (3.32 × 10−8 A/cm2). These findings confirm the high structural integrity and outstanding tribocorrosive behavior of the coating, highlighting its potential for application in biomedical implant technology. Full article

Plow loosening machines are essential agricultural machinery in the agricultural production process. Improving the surface strengthening process and extending the working life of the plow teeth of the plow loosening machine are of great significance. In this paper, the preparation of Stellite6/Cu composite coating on the surface of 316L steel substrate intended for strengthening the plow teeth of a plow loosening machine using laser cladding technology was studied. The influence of different laser process parameters on the microstructure and properties of Stellite6/Cu composite coating was investigated. The composite coating powder was composed of Stellite6 powder with a different weight percent of copper. Microstructural analysis, phase composition, elemental distribution, microhardness, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance of the composite coatings on the plow teeth were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), microhardness testing, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), friction and wear testing, and electrochemical workstation measurements. The results showed that (1) When the laser power was 1000 W, the average hardness of the prepared Stellite6/Cu composite layer achieved the highest hardness, approximately 1.36 times higher than the average hardness of the substrate, and the composite coating prepared exhibited the best wear resistance; (2) When the scanning speed was 800 mm/min, the composite coating exhibited the lowest average friction coefficient and the optimal corrosion resistance in a 3.5% wt.% NaCl solution with a self-corrosion current density of −7.55 µA/cm2; (3) When the copper content was 1 wt.%, the composite coating achieved the highest average hardness with 515.2 HV, the lowest average friction coefficient with 0.424, and the best corrosion resistance with a current density of −8.878 µA/cm2. Background/Objectives: Personalized 3D-printed (3DP) metallic implants delivery systems are being explored to repair bone fractures, allowing the customization of medical implants that respond to individual patient needs, making it potentially more effective and of greater quality than mass-produced devices. However, challenges associated with postsurgical infections caused by bacterial adhesion remain a clinical issue. To address this, local antibiotic therapies are receiving extensive attention to minimize the risk of implant-related infections. This study investigated the use of amikacin (AMK), a broad-spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic, incorporated onto 3D-printed 316L stainless steel implants using biodegradable polymer coatings of chitosan and poly lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA). Methods: This research examined different approaches to coat 3DP implants with amikacin. Various polymer-based coatings were studied to determine the optimal formulation based on the characteristics and release profile. The optimal formulation was performed on the antibacterial activity studies. Results: AMK-chitosan with PLGA coating implants controlled the rate of drug release for up to one month. The 3DP drug-loaded substrates demonstrated effective, concentration-dependent antibacterial activity against common infective pathogens. AMK-loaded substrates showed antimicrobial effectiveness for one week and inhibited bacteria significantly compared to the uncoated controls. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that 3DP metal surfaces coated with amikacin can provide customizable drug release profiles while effectively inhibiting bacterial growth. These findings highlight the potential of combining 3D printing with localized delivery strategies to prevent implant-associated infections and advance the development of personalized therapies. Stainless steel (SS) is one of the materials most commonly utilized for fabrication of medical implants and its properties are often improved by deposition of protective coatings. This study investigates certain physico-chemical and biological properties of SS substrate coated with multilayer thin film consisting of titanium nitride and silver layers (TiN-Ag film). TiN-Ag films were deposited on the surface of AISI 316 SS substrate by a combination of cathodic arc evaporation and DC magnetron sputtering. SS substrate was analyzed by TEM, while deposited coatings were analyzed by SEM, EDS and wettability measurements. Also, mitochondrial activity assay, and osteogenic and chondrogenic differentiation were performed on dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs). SEM and EDS revealed excellent adhesion between coatings’ layers, with the top layer predominantly composed of Ag, which is responsible for antibacterial properties. TiN-Ag film exhibited moderately hydrophilic behaviour which is desirable for orthopedic implant applications. Biological assays revealed significantly higher mitochondrial activity and enhanced osteogenic and chondrogenic differentiation of DPSC on TiN-Ag films compared to TiN films. The newly designed TiN-Ag coatings showed a great potential for the surface modification of SS implants, and further detailed investigations will explore their suitability for application in clinical practice. Nickel-based coatings have been demonstrated to effectively enhance the surface performance of stainless-steel components. The present study investigates the deposition efficiency and quality of Colmonoy 227-F nickel alloy coatings on AISI 304 stainless steel using direct energy deposition (DED). The work focuses on the relationships between process parameters, microstructural features, and mechanical properties. A total of sixteen process parameter combinations were studied, varying laser power and scanning speed to establish optimal deposition conditions and to evaluate coating morphology, surface topology, dilution behavior, and mechanical performance. The surface geometry was analyzed using three-dimensional digital confocal microscopy. New material distribution (MD) indices were developed to quantify spatial uniformity and integrity of single coating scan tracks (CSTs) across the XY, XZ, and YZ planes. The optimal process was identified around 900 W laser power, balancing deposition efficiency and structural integrity. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) reveal a gradual compositional transition between coating and substrate. The results of the microhardness test demonstrate a consistent gradient in mechanical properties, extending from the coating to the substrate. Coatings were found to achieve a hardness level of up to 600 HK. These findings establish a new benchmark for evaluating DED high-performance coatings and offer a scalable methodology for optimizing additive manufacturing processes in surface engineering applications. In this study, powders based on a high-entropy AlCoCrFeNi alloy obtained by mechanical alloying were successfully applied to a 316L stainless steel substrate by detonation spraying under various conditions. Their microstructural features, phase composition, hardness, and wear resistance were studied. A comparative analysis between the initial powder and the coatings was performed, including phase transformation modeling using Thermo-Calc under non-equilibrium conditions. The results showed that the phase composition of the powder and coatings includes body-centered cubic lattice (BCC), its ordered modification (B2), and face-centered cubic lattice FCC phases, which is consistent with the predictions of the Scheil solidification model, describing the process of non-equilibrium solidification, assuming no diffusion in the solid phase and complete mixing in the liquid phase. Rapid solidification and high-speed impact deformation of the powder led to significant grain refinement in the detonation spraying coating, which ultimately improved the mechanical properties at the micro level. The data obtained demonstrate the high efficiency of the AlCoCrFeNi coating applied by detonation spraying and confirm its potential for use in conditions of increased wear and mechanical stress. AlCoCrFeNi coatings may be promising for use as structural materials in the future. Full article

Based on laser cladding technology, six composite coatings with different amounts of Inconel 718 and 0~5% CeO2 were successfully prepared on the 316L stainless steel substrate. The effect of different amounts of CeO2 particles was investigated and discussed, such as microstructure, phases, elemental distribution, microhardness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance. The results show that the phases are composed of γ~(Fe, Ni), Ni3Nb, (Nb0.03Ti0.97)Ni3, and MCX(M = Cr, Nb and Mo). When the amount of CeO2 particles is higher than 1%, some Ce2O3 compounds can be detected in coatings. The average microhardness values of N0~N5 are 604.6, 754.5, 771.6, 741.4, 694.5 and 677.3 HV0.2, respectively. There is a trend that the microhardness increases firstly and then decreases, because an appropriate amount of CeO2 can improve the solid solution strength. The average wear rate values of N0~N5 are 2.97 × 10−5, 1.22 × 10−5, 0.94 × 10−5, 1.53 × 10−5, 1.81 × 10−5 and 2.26 × 10−5 mm3∙N−1∙min−1, respectively. The N2 coating has the smallest corrosion current density of 2.05 × 10−4 A·cm−2, which is about 56% of the N0 coating. When the amount of CeO2 particles is 2%, the coating has the best wear resistance and corrosion resistance due to fine grains and Cr, Nb and Mo compounds. Full article

Influence of Surface Treatments and Adhesive Type on Bond Strength Between Stainless Steel and CFRP in Agricultural Machinery

In the domain of agricultural machinery, the utilization of carbon fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRP) for structural components, such as the chassis, facilitates substantial weight reduction. To integrate additional components, stainless-steel connection points can be bonded to the CFRP chassis using adhesives. This study investigates surface preparation methods to enhance adhesive bonding strength at the coupon level. Three adhesives (DP490, MA8110, SG300) were tested on untreated, sandblasted, and sandpaper-grinded steel surfaces. Contrary to predictions, the highest strength (28.7 MPa) for DP490 was achieved after simple acetone cleaning, despite lower surface roughness (Ra = 1.60 µm), while sandblasting (Ra = 3.71 µm, 22 MPa) and grinding (Ra = 2.78 µm, 25.95 MPa) performed worse due to incomplete adhesive penetration. Subsequent tests on DP490 with laser structuring (Ra = 88.8 µm) and sandblasting with coating (Ra = 1.94 µm) provided strengths of 27.5 MPa and 29.3 MPa, respectively. The findings indicate that, under the examined conditions, surface cleanliness plays a more critical role in adhesive bonding strength than surface roughness. Practically, acetone cleaning is a cost-effective and time-efficient alternative to treatments like sandblasting or laser structuring. This makes it attractive for industrial use in agricultural machinery. While this study focuses on coupon-level surfaces, the findings provide a basis for scaling to component-level applications in future research. Full article

Micro-sandblasting pretreatment was applied to AlTiSiN-coated WC–Co tools to enhance cutting performance in 316 L stainless steel milling. An L9(33) Taguchi orthogonal array varied passivation pressure (0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 MPa), gun traverse speed (60, 80, and 100 m/min), and tool rotation speed (20, 30, and 40 r/min). Coating thickness varied only from 0.93 to 1.19 μm, and surface roughness remained within 0.044–0.077 μm, confirming negligible thickness and roughness effects. Under optimized conditions, coating adhesion strength and nano-hardness both exhibited significant improvements. A weighted-scoring method balancing these two responses identified the optimal pretreatment parameters as 0.1 MPa, 80 m/min, and 20 r/min. Milling tests at 85 m/min—using flank wear VBₘₐₓ = 0.1 mm as the failure criterion—demonstrated a cutting distance increase from 4.25 m (untreated) to 12.75 m (pretreated), a 200% improvement. Wear progressed through three stages: rapid initial wear, extended steady wear due to Al2O3 protective-film formation and Si-induced oxygen-diffusion suppression, and accelerated wear. Micro-sandblasting further prolonged the steady-wear phase by removing residual cobalt binder, exposing WC grains, and offsetting tensile residual stresses. These findings establish a practical, cost-effective micro-sandblasting pretreatment strategy that significantly enhances coating adhesion, hardness, and tool life, providing actionable guidance for improving the durability and machining performance of coated carbide tools in difficult-to-cut applications. High-temperature fuel cells and electrolyzers, particularly molten carbonate fuel cells (MCFCs) and Molten Carbonate Electrolyzers (MCEs), are expected to play a critical role in clean power generation, hydrogen production, and integrated CO2 separation. Unfortunately, despite their potential, these technologies have not yet reached full commercialization. The main reason for this is material degradation. In particular, the corrosion of metallic components continues to be a leading cause of performance loss and system failure. This review provides a comprehensive assessment of degradation mechanisms in MCFC and MCE systems. It examines key metallic components, such as current collectors and bipolar plates, focusing on the performance of commonly used materials, including stainless steels and advanced alloys, under prolonged exposure to corrosive environments. To address degradation issues, this review evaluates current mitigation strategies and discusses material selection, protective coatings application, and the optimization of operational parameters. Advances in alloy development, coatings, surface treatments, and process controls have been compared in terms of effectiveness, scalability, and long-term stability. The review concludes with a synthesis of current best practices and future directions, emphasizing the need for integrated, multi-functional solutions to achieve the lifetimes required for full commercialization. By linking materials science, electrochemistry, and systems engineering, this review offers directions for the development of corrosion-resistant MCFC and MCE technologies in support of a hydrogen-based, carbon-neutral energy future. The purpose of this study was to clarify the physical durability of a diamond-like carbon (DLC) thin film coated on pure titanium. The titanium surface of the abutment does not have sufficient toughness to prevent an increase in surface roughness or damage when the implant is scaled using a professional mechanical implement. The scaling process used for the removal of the dental plaque adhered to the abutment surface could increase the potential for the deposition of oral microorganisms and the accumulation of plaque, which increase the risk of peri-implantitis. A DLC thin film is biocompatible material that is known for its toughness, including extreme hardness, high abrasion resistance, chemical inertness, and high corrosion resistance. Protecting the abutment surface with the application of a DLC might prevent plaque adhesion due to its non-stick property. There was little change in the surface roughness of titanium samples to which DLC surface protection had been applied when the surface of the sample was scratched with a stainless steel scalar more than a thousand times. When cleaning the surface of pure titanium samples, the surface roughness significantly increased. DLC thin films are effective for the prevention the surface roughness of pure titanium implants from being increased when the conventional cleaning of the surface of the implant is performed. Ti/a-C:Cr multilayer films were deposited on 316L stainless steel (SS316L) substrates using medium-frequency alternating current magnetron sputtering, with a single-layer a-C:Cr film also prepared on a titanium substrate. The influence of sputtering pressure on the film’s structure and properties was systematically investigated. Film morphology and microstructure were analyzed via X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). At a pressure of 1.4 MPa, the interfacial contact resistance (ICR) of SS316L bipolar plates (BPPs) coated with the films reached as low as 3.30 mΩ·cm2, while that of titanium BPPs was 2.90 mΩ·cm2. Under simulated proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) cathode conditions (70 °C, 0.6 V vs. SCE, 0.5 M H2SO4, 5 ppm HF solution), the corrosion current density, Icorr, reached optimal values of 0.69 μA·cm−2 for SS316L and 0.62 μA·cm−2 for titanium. These results demonstrate that parameter optimization enables SS316L BPPs to functionally replace titanium counterparts, offering significant cost reductions for metal BPPs and accelerating the commercialization of PEMFC technology.
