Excessive dietary dextrose intake and its misuse in sports raise significant concerns about health outcomes across life stages. To investigate how biological maturity influences small intestinal responsiveness to dextrose overexposure, we subjected 1-month-old (young maturing) and 14-month-old (middle-aged) male Wistar rats to a 20% or 60% dextrose drinking regimen for 8 weeks. The middle-aged rats receiving the 60% dextrose solution exhibited the most pronounced alterations, including compromised barrier integrity, reduced crypt proliferation, and accelerated enterocyte apoptosis and necrosis. These structural changes coincided with weakened antioxidant defences, tissue iron accumulation, and elevated lipid peroxidation. Altered neuroendocrine and purinergic pathways, marked by increased serotonin, neuron-specific enolase (NSE), cytosolic high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1), and ATP synthase, alongside downregulated P2X7 receptor expression and a reduced nuclear factor kappa B p65/nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NF-κB p65/Nrf2) ratio, indicate potential observational associations with metabolic exhaustion and impaired inflammatory responsiveness under a chronic high-dextrose regimen. In conclusion, while fasting homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) values remained stable, a high-dextrose drinking regimen promotes maturity-dependent small intestinal changes and molecular signalling weakness, providing a preliminary pathophysiological framework for understanding potential health outcomes of dextrose overexposure across different life stages. Background and Objectives: Evidence on the acute ergogenic effects of caffeine in adolescent athletes remains limited. This systematic review quantified acute performance-related effects and summarised adverse-event reporting in this population. Methods: PubMed and Web of Science were searched from inception to 13 May 2026 and SPORTDiscus was additionally searched from inception to 15 July 2026 for placebo-controlled studies of acute, dose-defined caffeine ingestion in adolescent athletes aged 10–19 years. Paired Hedges’ g values were synthesised separately across six outcome domains using three-level random-effects models with CR2 cluster-robust inference. Risk of bias and certainty of evidence were assessed using RoB 2 and GRADE. Safety findings were summarised narratively. Results: Thirty-five studies were included, of which 32, representing a total of 726 participants, contributed 363 effect sizes. In the primary analysis, which excluded a priori a small number of extreme combat-sport count-test effects arising from implausibly small reported standard deviations (Hedges’ g > 3.0), caffeine produced a small favourable average effect on physical performance (g = 0.33, 95% CI 0.17 to 0.49). When all effect sizes were included in a sensitivity analysis, the estimate was larger but inflated by these extreme values (g = 0.43, 95% CI 0.20 to 0.67) and was accompanied by substantial heterogeneity (I2 = 84%), a prediction interval crossing the null (−0.71 to 1.58), and significant small-study asymmetry. Pooled effects were not statistically significant for sport-specific performance, perceptual response, or physiology. Cognitive findings were based on only two study clusters and were highly uncertain, while psychological outcomes were summarised narratively because the evidence was too sparse and heterogeneous for a meaningful pooled estimate. Exploratory moderator analyses did not provide reliable evidence that effects differed by caffeine dose or ingestion timing. No serious adverse events were reported, but adverse-event assessment was inconsistent. Conclusions: Acute caffeine ingestion may produce a small and uncertain benefit for selected physical-performance tasks in adolescent athletes. Adverse-event reporting was inconsistent, and current evidence is insufficient to support routine caffeine use in youth sport. These findings are specific to acute caffeine exposure under controlled experimental conditions in adolescent athletes and should not be extrapolated to children, non-athlete adolescents, repeated or chronic caffeine use, or energy-drink consumption. Background/Objectives: The rising prevalence of dietary supplement use among athletes raises concerns, given the risks associated with unnecessary or excessive use. This study evaluated the impact of a Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB)-based online educational intervention, “Nutrition for Athletes”, on dietary supplement use among varsity athletes at a Canadian university. Methods: Thirty varsity athletes were randomized into intervention (n = 18) and control (n = 12) groups. The intervention was delivered online over four weeks and consisted of four units that covered topics related to sports nutrition, hydration in sports, dietary supplements, and risks associated with dietary supplement use. Dietary supplement use was measured at baseline and post-intervention using self-reported questionnaires. Results: The most commonly used supplements at baseline were vitamin D (57%), vitamin C (53%), sports drinks (50%), protein bars, powders, and shakes (43%), and whey protein (40%). Binary logistic regression revealed a reduced likelihood of dietary supplement use in the experimental group compared to the control group post intervention, but this difference was not statistically significant (OR = 0.18, 95% CI = 0.01 to 1.76, p = 0.14). There was also no significant change in the behaviour of dietary supplement use within the experimental group, when comparing baseline to post-intervention (OR = 0.12, 95% CI = 0.01 to 1.11, p = 0.06). Conclusions: These findings reflect the potential existence of an intention-behaviour gap. Future interventions may benefit from incorporating strategies that address control-related barriers. This study evaluated the effect of sports and energy drinks on the surface roughness of three commonly used restorative dental materials: resin-based composites (RBCs), resin-modified glass ionomer cements (RMGICs), and conventional glass ionomer cements (GICs). Sixty-three A2-shade specimens of each material were fabricated, stored in distilled water for 24 h, and then immersed in six commercially available beverages or distilled water (control) for 6, 30, or 60 h. Surface roughness was assessed after each immersion period using contact profilometry, and the effects of material type, immersion medium, and exposure time were compared. Surface roughness increased with longer immersion times for all materials, although the magnitude of change varied significantly among material types. RBCs showed the greatest resistance to surface degradation, whereas RMGICs and particularly GICs exhibited progressively higher roughness values over time. Beverages generally produced greater surface roughness than distilled water, with sugar-containing formulations showing higher roughness values than their sugar-free counterparts. Prolonged exposure to sports and energy drinks may adversely affect the surface integrity of restorative materials. Resin-based composites demonstrated the highest resistance to roughness changes, whereas glass ionomer cements were the most susceptible. Increased surface roughness may contribute to plaque accumulation, staining, and material wear, potentially compromising the long-term clinical performance of restorations. Full article

Objectives: This study aimed to systematically review the association between the consumption of energy drinks and sports drinks with oral health. Methods: A systematic search was conducted in three databases (PubMed, Web of Science and Embase) without any restrictions on publication year. Original studies (clinical trials, cohort, case-control studies and cross-sectional studies) reporting the association between energy drink or sports drink consumption and oral health or its impact on oral health were included. Results: The initial search found 1196 studies, and 10 studies with a total of 5805 participants (6–89 years old) met the inclusion criteria for analysis. Six studies investigated the association between energy drinks or sports drinks and dental erosion, whereas two studies reported dental caries outcomes and two studies reported saliva outcomes. Most (70%, 7/10) of the included studies were at high or serious risk of bias. Increased frequency or higher amounts of energy drink consumption were associated with a greater risk of dental erosion, whereas the relationship between sports drinks and dental erosion was inconsistent. Evidence regarding the association between dental caries experience and energy drink consumption was controversial, and no significant differences in caries experience were observed for sports drink consumption. Conclusions: There was limited and low-quality evidence suggesting that consumption of energy drinks may be potentially associated with dental erosion experience, whereas findings related to dental caries were inconclusive. The association between sports drinks and dental erosion was inconsistent and supported by limited evidence. More well-designed studies on energy or sports drinks and oral health are needed to clarify these relationships. Full article

Background: The use of sports supplements among adolescents is rising globally, driven by fitness trends and social media influence, yet knowledge gaps persist. This study aimed to assess supplement usage patterns, knowledge, attitudes, information sources, and the impact of a social media educational intervention among Serbian secondary school students. Methods: A single-group pre–post educational intervention study was conducted in secondary school students (aged 14–18) in Vojvodina, Serbia. A 21-question anonymous questionnaire was distributed to 1000 students along with parental informed consent forms. Pre-intervention survey assessed sociodemographics, physical activity and social media habits, supplement use information sources, and awareness of risks and banned substances. Based on the initial findings, an educational campaign delivered 56 short videos (≈70 s each) on Instagram and TikTok covering most frequently used supplements (e.g., creatine, proteins, caffeine, energy drinks). After, the intervention survey was repeated. The data were analyzed using the McNemar–Bowker test of symmetry. Results: In this study, 65% of Serbian secondary school adolescents reported being physically active, engaging predominantly in gym workouts and team sports. The majority of participants initiate dietary supplement use independently, without consulting healthcare professionals or adults. The most commonly used supplements were vitamins and minerals, while energy drinks ranked notably high. Social media intervention had a limited impact due to its short duration; however, certain changes were detected. Conclusions: Serbian adolescents frequently use sports supplements without adequate professional guidance. Long-term TikTok/Instagram interventions could be used in the future in order to influence behaviors and improve knowledge about sport supplement use. Full article

Based on the KANO model, this study investigates the demand structure and optimization pathway for sports park facilities in Xi’an, integrating green and low-carbon principles into the planning and operation process. A questionnaire survey was conducted among 584 residents across six representative sports parks in Xi’an, covering 30 facility items classified into sports facility types and supporting facilities/services. Using KANO categorization combined with Better–Worse coefficient analysis and the importance coefficient (ID), the results reveal eight important-quality items (e.g., badminton courts, basketball courts, table tennis facilities, square dance areas, fitness equipment, rest areas, toilets, and drinking water dispensers), thirteen expected-quality items, six charm-quality items, and three irrelevant-quality items. The importance ranking further identifies high-priority must-be and expected elements, providing a quantifiable basis for supply sequencing. The study proposes a phased optimization strategy: first guarantee important-quality across all parks with low-cost green measures, then improve expected-quality items to enhance satisfaction, and finally pilot charm-quality features as differentiated “one park, one product” features under feasibility and budget constraints. This KANO-based integrated framework not only addresses the research gap in multi-dimensional demand classification and priority ordering for sports parks but also offers a replicable decision-making model for sustainable, user-centered facility allocation in Xi’an and similar cities, advancing the transition from “total quantity” to “multi-dimensional adaptation” in national fitness infrastructure. Background: Nutrient-enriched sports foods can support efficient nutrient intake in specific circumstances in athletic nutrition management, such as during competition, when training away from the usual environment, or during periods of weight management. Despite their widespread availability, sports foods are not always used appropriately, necessitating tools to support informed product selection. Objective: This study aimed to characterize sports foods consumed by Japanese athletes and to develop a Japanese sports food exchange list to facilitate product selection based on target nutrient requirements. Methods: Seven sports food categories commonly used in Japanese sports settings were examined: sports drinks, energy jellies, energy bars, energy gels, protein drinks, protein bars, and protein powders. Following the methodology of Spain’s sports food exchange list, development proceeded in two stages. First, suppliers were selected based on INFORMED CHOICE certification or listing on the Japan Anti-Doping Agency’s product information website, with input from experienced sports dietitians. Subsequently, 523 products were classified into subcategories based on nutrient content per unit using established statistical criteria, including the mean, standard deviation, coefficient of variation, and z-values. Results: After excluding products with z-values outside ±2 or compositions deemed unsuitable for carbohydrate or protein supplementation, 498 products from 36 suppliers were classified into 24 subcategories. Japanese sports foods exhibited broad distributions in nutrient composition, variability derived from ingredient differences, and a high proportion of plant-based protein powders. Conclusions: This study developed a Japanese sports food exchange list comprising 498 products across 24 subcategories, enabling evidence-based product selection aligned with the nutrient intake goals of Japanese athletes. Sports drinks have traditionally been formulated as carbohydrate–electrolyte beverages to support fluid replacement and energy provision during exercise. However, commercially available and experimentally tested formulations now include amino acids, proteins, phytochemicals, caffeine, menthol, ketone-related nutrients, and other functional ingredients intended to support thermoregulation, performance, or post-exercise recovery. This narrative review summarizes evidence on sports drinks and related functional beverages, with emphasis on hydration, gastric emptying and intestinal absorption, thermoregulation, biomarkers of hydration and recovery, and potential effects beyond hydration, including fatigue, muscle and organ damage, inflammation, and immune responses. Because available studies vary widely in population, exercise mode, environmental conditions, beverage composition, intake timing, and outcome measures, the evidence should be interpreted cautiously. A functional distinction is made between hydration-oriented carbohydrate–electrolyte beverages and beverages primarily designed for ergogenic or recovery-oriented purposes. Current evidence supports the practical value of appropriate fluid, electrolyte, and carbohydrate intake for maintaining hydration and exercise performance, whereas evidence for broader effects on inflammation, immunodepression, organ protection, and recovery remains context-dependent. Future studies should differentiate acute responses from longer-term adaptations, consider population-specific needs, and use standardized, context-appropriate biomarkers and ecologically valid protocols. Compound sugars (Cs) and creatine (Cr) have the potential to enhance exercise endurance; however, the mechanisms underlying their effects and the stability of their formulations still require further investigation. This study investigated the effects of Cs and Cr supplementation on exercise performance in C57BL/6 mice, as well as the processing properties of Cs and Cr powder. The exhaustion time, serum fatigue indices, creatine contents, the morphology of muscle tissue in mice were determined. The results demonstrated that combined supplementation of sugar and creatine (Cs-Cr, Cs 6.2 mg/g + Cr 1.0 mg/g) could significantly increase exhaustion time and forelimb grip strength and reduce the levels of lactate and blood urea nitrogen by 22.3% and 25.86%, respectively. In addition, Cs-Cr supplementation increased muscle mass and muscle fiber density in exercise-trained mice and thus alleviated muscle damage caused by exercise. However, Cs-Cr powder exhibits poor stability during processing. Xanthan gum and locust bean gum (m/m = 6:4) has been demonstrated to increase the stability and viscosity of Cs-Cr beverages. Moreover, the addition of 1.5% CaSiO3 also reduced the caking of the powder and increased the stability of the product. This study provides a theoretical basis for the application of Cs-Cr in a functional solid beverage. Full article

Background: Leading sports medicine and nutrition organizations recommend replacing sodium losses during prolonged exercise; however, practical guidance for implementing sodium replacement strategies remains limited. Estimating sodium needs during exercise requires assessment of both whole-body sweat sodium concentration (WBSSC) and sweat rate. Objectives: This study focused on WBSSC by examining its temporal stability, reproducibility, and predictability during prolonged cycling exercise while drinking according to two hydration strategies. Methods: Using a randomized, crossover, counterbalanced design, eight highly trained men completed two 5 h cycling sessions (183 ± 14 W, 30 °C) while consuming fluids either in a programmed (P) or ad libitum (AL) fashion. Sweat was collected with patches applied on the forearm for ~20 min before sampling, which occurred at ~40, 130, 220, and 290 min. Local sweat sodium concentration was converted to WBSSC using a validated equation. Results: A main effect of time was observed for WBSSC (p < 0.05), with only the 40 min time point differing from later measurements; no condition or interaction effects were detected. The within-trial typical variation in WBSSC was 7.2 mmol·L−1 for P and 6.1 mmol·L−1 for AL, while the between-trial typical variation was 5.6 mmol·L−1. The WBSSC measured at 40 min predicted mean exercise WBSSC with good precision and moderate stability (y = 0.2738 + 1.3397x, R2 = 0.87, standard error of the estimate = 5.4 mmol·L−1, 95% confidence interval slope = 0.82–1.86 mmol·L−1). Conclusions: These findings indicate that during prolonged cycling exercise, WBSSC (1) varies trivially within and between trials; (2) can reasonably be predicted using a single sweat sample and; (3) is not influenced by P or AL drinking. Carbohydrate availability and caffeine ingestion have been shown to elicit improvements in performance independently of one another. The purpose of the study was to examine the effect of a carbohydrate + caffeine beverage on performance and perceived effort in soccer players. Forty-three collegiate women’s soccer athletes were recruited to participate during a single day of simulated match play, in which each team played once. Athletes consumed either a carbohydrate + caffeine (Experimental) beverage or a control (Control) beverage (flavored water) during half-time in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized control trial design. Prior to and after each game, Ratings of Perceived Exertion (RPE) and blood glucose levels were assessed. Heart rate, training impulse (TRIMP), total distance covered, high-speed distance, and velocity were recorded. Blood glucose levels after the match simulation were positively associated with total distance (r = 0.434; p = 0.01), distance per minute (r = 0.439; p < 0.01), average velocity (r = 0.438; p = 0.01), and TRIMP (r = 0.404; p = 0.018) during the second half. There was a significant main effect for half regarding blood glucose (p < 0.001), total distance (p < 0.001), high-speed distance (p < 0.001), and TRIMP (p = 0.046). There was a significant half × condition effect for blood glucose (p = 0.05). Pairwise comparisons indicated the Experimental beverage condition resulted in a +27 mg/dL (95% CI: −3.6, 58.8) difference compared to the Control beverage following the 2nd Half. In the current study, consumption of the carbohydrate + caffeine beverage during half-time resulted in higher blood glucose levels post-game compared to placebo; however, the experimental beverage did not influence the total distance covered, average velocities, average heart rate, or TRIMP values during the second half of simulated match play. Sports drinks are becoming increasingly popular, especially among young, physically active individuals. The influence of acidic drinks on dental restorative materials, including composites and glass ionomers, is an important concern in conservative dentistry. Acidic conditions can cause material degradation, which may reduce their longevity and clinical performance. We aimed to examine the effect of sports drink exposure on the colour stability of composite and glass ionomer materials. This systematic review was conducted based on records published from 1 January 2005 to 31 December 2024, according to the PRISMA statement guidelines, using the databases PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase. Based on the established inclusion and exclusion criteria, 17 studies were selected for this review, of which 12 were included in a meta-analysis. The meta-analysis demonstrated a statistically significant increase in colour change (ΔE) for microhybrid composites and nanocomposites after immersion in sports drinks for one month (SMD = 3.04; 95% CI: 0.67 to 5.41, and SMD = 3.00; 95% CI: 1.08 to 4.92, respectively). No such significant differences were observed for nanohybrid materials (SMD = 1.64; p-value = 0.579). Despite the findings of this systematic review, the extent of material degradation observed in in vitro studies cannot be directly translated to clinical oral conditions, as factors such as salivary buffering capacity and variable exposure to sports drinks influence outcomes. Synergistic Effects of Simulated Energy Drink Exposure and Fatigue Loading on Bioactive and Conventional Resin Composites

The consumption of energy and sports drinks is on the rise globally, exposing dental restorations to more frequent low-pH challenges, which affect degradation. This in vitro study simulated the combined effect of energy drink exposure and cyclic fatigue loading on the fatigue survival rate and flexural strength of three direct dental resin restorative materials with distinct chemistries: a bioactive ionic resin (Activa Presto), a giomer (Beautifil Flow Plus F00) and a conventional nano-hybrid composite (Tetric Ceram). Bar-shaped specimens (25 × 2 × 2 mm) were fabricated according to ISO 4049 and stored for 24 h in either distilled water or 0.2 M citric acid (pH ≈ 2.5), simulating an energy drink (n = 10/group). The samples then underwent chewing simulation (40 N, 100,000 cycles, 1.6 Hz) using a steel antagonist; surviving specimens were tested via three-point bending to determine their flexural strength. All the materials were affected by storage conditions: Activa Presto showed the lowest fatigue survival (20% in water; 0% in citric acid), Tetric N-Ceram moderate survival (40% in both solutions) and Beautifil Flow Plus F00 the highest and most stable survival (90% in water; 40% in citric acid). Among the surviving specimens, Tetric Ceram exhibited the highest flexural strength, followed by Beautifil Flow Plus F00 and then Activa Presto. Citric acid exposure and cyclic loading adversely affected the mechanical performance of all the materials within the limitations of this study. Full article

Sex Moderates the Mediating Effect of Physical Activity in the Relationship Between Dietary Habits and Sleep Quality in University Students

Background/Objectives: Diet and physical activity are key lifestyle behaviours associated with sleep quality, yet their combined and sex-specific associations remain insufficiently understood. This study examined the associations between dietary behaviours and sleep quality among university students and assessed whether physical activity formed part of an indirect statistical association between these variables, with sex considered as a moderator. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 418 students (199 males, 219 females) from the Wroclaw University of Health and Sport Sciences. Body height and body mass were measured using standard anthropometric procedures. Sleep quality (SQ) was registered with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), dietary habits were assessed with the Questionnaire of Eating Behaviours (QEB) and physical activity (PA) was assessed with the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Data-driven feature-selection methods were applied to identify dietary behaviours associated with sleep quality, which were combined into a Synthetic Dietary Behaviour Index (SDBI). A moderated mediation model, adjusted for body mass index (BMI), was then used to examine the statistical associations between dietary behaviours, physical activity, sleep quality, and sex. Sleep quality was modelled as a continuous PSQI score in mediation analyses, while the dichotomised PSQI category was used only for feature selection. Results: Machine-learning feature selection identified nine dietary behaviours statistically associated with sleep quality. Unfavourable behaviours—fast food, fried meals, sweetened beverages, energy drinks and alcohol—were linked to poorer sleep, whereas vegetables, curd cheese and wholegrain bread were associated with better sleep. Poor sleep was more prevalent among females (45.2% vs. 14.6%, χ2 (1) = 65.4, p < 0.001). The mediation model indicated that physical activity formed part of a statistically significant but modest indirect association between dietary behaviour and sleep quality, with sex moderating the IPAQ → PSQI path (β = −0.45, p = 0.006). Indirect associations were significant for both sexes but stronger among females (males: β = 0.032, p = 0.021; females: β = 0.102, p = 0.004). Conclusions: Unfavourable dietary patterns and lower physical activity were statistically associated with poorer sleep quality, with a stronger indirect statistical effect observed among females. These findings support the relevance of integrated, sex-sensitive lifestyle approaches addressing both dietary behaviours and physical activity, while acknowledging the cross-sectional nature of the data.
