Nomadic heritage villages constitute significant material cultural heritage. Under China’s cultural revitalization and rural development strategies, these villages face spatial degradation driven by tourism and urbanization. Current research predominantly employs isolated analytical approaches—space syntax often overlooks social dynamics while social network analysis (SNA) overlooks physical interfaces—hindering the development of holistic solutions for socio-spatial resilience. This study proposes a multi-scale integrated assessment framework combining social network analysis (SNA) and space syntax to systematically evaluate public space structures in traditional nomadic villages of Xinjiang. The framework provides scientific evidence for optimizing public space design in these villages, facilitating harmonious coexistence between spatial functionality and cultural values. Focusing on three heritage villages—representing compact, linear, and dispersed morphologies—the research employs a hierarchical “village-street-node” analytical model to dissect spatial configurations and their socio-functional dynamics. Key findings include the following: Compact villages exhibit high central clustering but excessive concentration, necessitating strategies to enhance network resilience and peripheral connectivity. Linear villages demonstrate weak systemic linkages, requiring “segment-connection point supplementation” interventions to mitigate structural elongation. Dispersed villages maintain moderate network density but face challenges in visual integration and centrality, demanding targeted activation of key intersections to improve regional cohesion. By merging SNA’s social attributes with space syntax’s geometric precision, this framework bridges a methodological gap, offering comprehensive spatial optimization solutions. Practical recommendations include culturally embedded placemaking, adaptive reuse of transitional spaces, and thematic zoning to balance heritage conservation with tourism needs. Analyzing Xinjiang’s unique spatial–social interactions provides innovative insights for sustainable heritage village planning and replicable solutions for comparable global cases. Full article

In June 2025, a two-year-old female brown bear (Ursus arctos) appeared in the streets of Vilnius, the capital city of Lithuania. This sparked significant public, institutional, and media responses. This paper analyzes the event through ecological, social, and symbolic lenses to explore how large carnivores are perceived and managed at the wildland–urban interface. Through an examination of media reports, policy responses, and theoretical perspectives from environmental sociology and narrative studies, we explore how the bear’s presence became a public safety concern and a culturally significant symbol. Public discourse revealed tensions between institutional authority and local ethical values, as evidenced by hunters’ refusal to carry out a kill permit. This case also illustrates the growing use of technology, such as drones, in urban wildlife management. The bear’s peaceful departure reinforced the effectiveness of nonlethal conflict resolution. This case underscores the importance of integrating ecological realities with social perceptions, media framing, and symbolic interpretations in large carnivore conservation. It emphasizes the need for interdisciplinary approaches that address the emotional and cultural aspects of human–wildlife interactions in rapidly urbanizing areas. Full article

Amman’s rapid population growth and sprawling urbanization have resulted in car-centric, fragmented neighborhoods that lack social cohesion and are vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. This study reframes walkability as a climate adaptation strategy, demonstrating how pedestrian-oriented spatial planning can reduce vehicle emissions, mitigate urban heat island effects, and enhance the resilience of green infrastructure in peri-urban contexts. Using Deir Ghbar, a rapidly developing marginal area on Amman’s western edge, as a case study, we combine objective walkability metrics (street connectivity and residential and retail density) with GIS-based spatial regression analysis to examine relationships with residents’ sense of community. Employing a quantitative, correlational research design, we assess walkability using a composite objective walkability index, calculated from the land-use mix, street connectivity, retail density, and residential density. Our results reveal that higher residential density and improved street connectivity significantly strengthen social cohesion, whereas low-density zones reinforce spatial and socioeconomic disparities. Furthermore, the findings highlight the potential of targeted green infrastructure interventions, such as continuous street tree canopies and permeable pavements, to enhance pedestrian comfort and urban ecological functions. By visualizing spatial patterns and correlating built-environment attributes with community outcomes, this research provides actionable insights for policymakers and urban planners. These strategies contribute directly to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 13 (Climate Action), by fostering more inclusive, connected, and climate-resilient neighborhoods. Deir Ghbar emerges as a model for scalable, GIS-driven spatial planning in rural and marginal peri-urban areas throughout Jordan and similar regions facing accelerated urban transitions. By correlating walkability metrics with community outcomes, this study operationalizes SDGs 11 and 13, offering a replicable framework for climate-resilient urban planning in arid regions. This study introduces Edible Streets as a distinct and scalable model of community-led urban food growing, specifically investigating the drivers and barriers to the initiative. Unlike traditional urban food-growing initiatives, Edible Streets explores the integration of edible plants into street verges and footpaths with direct community involvement of the people who live/work in a street. This study contributes new knowledge by evaluating Edible Streets through the COM-B model of behavioural change, through policy and governance in addition to behaviour change, and by developing practical frameworks to facilitate its implementation. Focusing on Oxford, the research engaged residents through 17 in-person interviews and 18 online surveys, alongside a stakeholder workshop with 21 policymakers, community leaders, and NGO representatives. Findings revealed strong motivation for Edible Streets, driven by values of sustainability, community resilience, and improved well-being. However, capability barriers, including knowledge gaps in gardening, land-use policies, and food preservation, as well as opportunity constraints related to land access, water availability, and environmental challenges, hindered participation. To address these, a How-to Guide was developed, and a pilot Edible Street project was launched. Future steps include establishing a licensing application model to facilitate urban food growing and conducting a Post-Use Evaluation and Impact Study. Nationally, this model could support Right to Grow policies, while globally, it aligns with climate resilience and food security goals. Locally grown food enhances biodiversity, reduces carbon footprints, and strengthens social cohesion. By tackling key barriers and scaling solutions, this study provides actionable insights for policymakers and practitioners to create resilient, equitable urban food systems. Full article

Shaboo is a street name commonly used in parts of Asia, particularly the Philippines and Thailand, to refer to methamphetamine, a powerful and highly addictive stimulant. Its long-term effects are related to chronic exposure to the drug effects, primarily neurotoxicity phenomena, which could lead to cognitive impairment, or psychiatric symptoms. We aim to present one case of problematic shaboo use in a patient referring to an addiction outpatient clinic in Northern Italy. This case highlights that the treatment of these patients involves careful multidisciplinary management. An accurate knowledge of the physical and psychological effects of New Psychoactive Substances is essential, as well as the implementation of a tailored psychological and social support program. This article traces the historical evolution of mural painting as a medium of cultural expression from prehistoric cave art to contemporary street interventions. Adopting a diachronic and interdisciplinary approach, it investigates how muralism has developed across civilizations in relation to techniques, symbolic systems, social function, and its embeddedness in architectural and urban contexts. The analysis is structured around key historical periods using emblematic case studies to examine the interplay between materiality, iconography, and socio-political meaning. From sacred enclosures and civic monuments to post-industrial walls and digital projections, murals reflect shifting cultural paradigms and spatial dynamics. This study emphasizes how mural painting, once integrated into sacred and imperial architecture, has become a tool for public participation, protests, and urban storytelling. Particular attention is paid to the evolving relationship between wall painting and the spaces it inhabits, highlighting the transition from permanence to ephemerality and from monumentality to immediacy. This article contributes to mural studies by offering a comprehensive framework for understanding the technical and symbolic transformations of the medium while proposing new directions for research in the context of digital urbanism and cultural memory. In high-density and land-scarce urban environments such as Taipei—a typical example of compact development in East Asia—informal green spaces (IGSs)—defined as unmanaged or unplanned vegetated urban areas such as vacant lots, street verges, and railway margins—play a growing role in urban environmental and social dynamics. This study explores residents’ perceptions of IGSs and examines how these spaces contribute to urban sustainability and land governance. Using a mixed-methods approach that combines the literature review, field observations, and a structured public opinion survey in Taipei’s Wenshan District, the study identifies key perceived benefits and drawbacks of IGSs. Findings show that residents highly value IGSs for enhancing urban greenery, offering recreational opportunities, and promoting physical and mental health. However, concerns persist regarding safety, sanitation, and maintenance—particularly fears of waste accumulation, mosquito breeding, and risks to children. The results highlight the dual nature of IGSs as both vital ecological assets and potential sources of urban disorder. These insights underscore the need for inclusive, community-based governance models that can transform IGSs into legitimate components of green infrastructure. The study contributes to emerging discussions on adaptive urban land governance by proposing that informal spaces be strategically integrated into urban planning frameworks to enhance environmental equity, resilience, and citizen well-being. The integration of shared autonomous vehicles into historic urban areas presents both opportunities and challenges. In heritage-rich environments like very old Asian (such as Suzhou old town, which serves as a use case example) or European (especially Mediterranean coastal cities) areas—characterized by narrow alleys, dense development, and sensitive cultural landscapes—shared autonomous vehicle adoption raises critical spatial and social questions. This study employs a qualitative, user-centered approach based on the ripple model to examine residents’ perceptions across four dimensions: residential patterns, parking land use, regional accessibility, and street-level infrastructure. Semi-structured interviews with 27 participants reveal five key findings: (1) public trust depends on transparent decision-making and safety guarantees; (2) shared autonomous vehicles may reshape generational residential clustering; (3) the short-term parking demand remains stable, but the long-term reuse of space is feasible; (4) shared autonomous vehicles could enhance accessibility in historic cores; (5) transport systems may evolve toward intelligent, human-centered designs. Based on these insights, the study proposes three strategies: (1) transparent risk assessment using explainable artificial intelligence and digital twins; (2) polycentric development to diversify land use; (3) hierarchical street retrofitting to balance mobility and preservation. While this study is limited by its qualitative scope and absence of simulation, it offers a framework for culturally sensitive, small-scale interventions supporting sustainable mobility transitions in historic urban contexts. As a catalyst for sustainable urbanization, urban vibrancy drives human interactions, economic agglomeration, and resilient development through its spatial manifestation of diverse activities. While previous studies have emphasized the connection between built environment features—especially street network centrality—and urban vibrancy, the broader mechanisms through which the full spectrum of street configuration dimensions shape vibrancy patterns remain insufficiently examined. To address this gap, this study applies a GeoXAI approach that synergizes random forest modeling and GeoShapley interpretation to reveal the influence of street configuration on urban vibrancy. Leveraging multi-source geospatial data from Xiamen Island, China, we operationalize urban vibrancy through a composite index derived from three-dimensional proxies: life service review density, social media check-in intensity, and mobile device user concentration. Street configuration is quantified through a tripartite measurement system encompassing network centrality, detour ratio, and shape index. Our findings indicate that (1) street network centrality and shape index, as well as their interactions with location, emerge as the dominant influencing factors; (2) The relationships between street configuration and urban vibrancy are predominantly nonlinear, exhibiting clear threshold effects; (3) The impact of street configuration is spatially heterogeneous, as evidenced by geographically varying coefficients. The findings can enlighten urban planning and design by providing a basis for the development of nuanced criteria and context-sensitive interventions to foster vibrant urban environments. Due to global warming, the impact of heat waves on the sentimental health of urban residents has significantly intensified. However, the associative mechanism between diverse urban functional layouts and residents’ emotions at the street scale remains underexplored. Taking the five core urban areas of Chengdu as an example, this study used natural language processing technology to quantify the sentiments in social media texts and combined traditional geographical information for spatial analysis and correlation analysis, to explore the spatial distribution pattern of sentiments during heat waves (SDHW), as well as the correlation between SDHW and the functional categories of streets (FCS). The findings are as follows: (1) There are significant differences in the spatial distribution pattern of residents’ sentiments in the five core urban areas, and positive emotions within the Second Ring Road exhibit a higher proportion than those of peripheral areas, while negative sentiments are more gathered in the eastern area. (2) The street categories of green space, park, and public show a significant promoting role on residents’ positive sentiments. (3) There is an association between the industrial and commercial categories and negative sentiments, and the impact of the traffic category on residents’ sentiments shows spatial differences. (4) The combination of the residential category and other functional categories has a strong correlation with sentiments, indicating that a reasonable functional combination within residential areas plays a crucial role in promoting residents’ positive sentiments. The current study revealed the influence mechanism of the functional categories of streets on residents’ sentiments during heat waves, providing a scientific basis from the sentimental dimension for the optimization of street functional categories, heat wave emergency management, and the construction of resilient cities. The article analyzes the meanings embedded in street art in Florence that portrays women, likely created by female artists. Between 18 May and 27 May 2024, during the Communities and Artistic Participation in Hybrid Environment (CAPHE) project, we observed a significant number of feminist street art pieces in Florence’s historic center. Using qualitative content analysis based on Gillian Rose’s methodology (2016), we interpreted the collected visual materials through semiotic and socio-cultural lenses. The findings revealed the deliberately interventionist nature of the analyzed works, addressing themes such as gender inequality, human rights, violence against women, and cultural stereotypes. This street art serves as a social manifesto and a means of activating both the local community and tourists, aligning with global feminist discourse while addressing Florence’s local issues. We conclude that Florence’s street art provides a space for visual resistance, education, and the promotion of gender equality and women’s emancipation in the context of contemporary social challenges. This study proposes a practical integration of an existing deep learning model (YOLOv9-E) and social participation GIS using multi-source remote sensing data to identify asbestos-containing materials located on the side of a building affected by light occlusions. These objects are often undetectable by traditional vertical or oblique photogrammetry, yet their precise localization is essential for effective removal planning. By leveraging the mobility and responsiveness of citizen investigators, we conducted fine-grained surveys in community spaces that were often inaccessible using conventional methods. The YOLOv9-E model demonstrated robustness on mobile-captured images, enriched with geolocation and orientation metadata, which improved the association between detections and specific buildings. By comparing results from Google Street View and field-based social imagery, we highlight the complementary strengths of both sources. Rather than introducing new algorithms, this study focuses on an applied integration framework to improve detection coverage, spatial precision, and participatory monitoring for environmental risk management. The dataset comprised 20,889 images, with 98% being used for training and validation and 2% being used for independent testing. The YOLOv9-E model achieved an mAP50 of 0.81 and an F1-score of 0.85 on the test set. Full article

This study examines culture-led urban regeneration as a strategy for revitalizing Meezan Chowk, a historically significant yet deteriorating public space in Quetta, Pakistan. Once a central site of social and commercial exchange, the area suffered from infrastructural decline, overcrowding, and the erosion of its architectural identity. The research proposes a design intervention to restore the site’s heritage value while enhancing its functional and social relevance. A qualitative approach is adopted, incorporating surveys, focus group discussions, and site observations to assess user needs and spatial dynamics. A SWOT analysis serves as the analytical framework to identify the site’s internal strengths and weaknesses, as well as external opportunities and threats. By utilizing the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and OpenStreetMap data, further information can enhance understanding of the site’s urban morphology. The proposed design integrates vernacular elements, such as arched facades, shaded corridors, and communal courtyards, with contemporary features, including cafes, local artisan shops, and accessible public amenities. Deterring Street Crimes Using Aerial Police: Data-Driven Joint Station Deployment and Patrol Path Planning for Policing UAVs

Street crime is a critical public concern, attracting wide social and research attention. Conventional solutions to reduce street crimes are dispatching more police force in patrol and installing more cameras for street surveillance, which, however, suffer from huge manpower and financial consumption and limited performance. Inspired by the wide application of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in policing and other related missions such as street surveillance, we investigate the use of UAVs in patrolling along high-risk streets to deter street crimes. UAVs significantly outperform police officers and street cameras in terms of cost reduction and deterring performance improvement. Technically, this paper proposes a data-driven framework to schedule the patrol UAVs, including an online patrol path planning module and an offline UAV station siting module. In the first module, the street-level deterring effect of the UAVs is estimated using a prediction-enhanced method, which guides the UAVs to patrol the high-risk streets more efficiently. Evolved from the path planning algorithm, the second module utilizes a data-driven method to estimate the deterring effect of the candidate UAV stations with different numbers of UAVs. Then both the location of the UAV stations and the UAVs at each station are determined. The proposed framework is comprehensively evaluated using a 6-year crime dataset of the Denver city. The results show that the proposed framework improves the deterring effect by 58.49% on average, and up to 157.32% in extreme cases compared to baselines. Full article

As cities globally prioritize sustainable transportation, understanding gender-differentiated responses to the urban built environment is critical for equitable mobility planning. This study combined the Social Ecological Model (SEM) with the theoretical perspective of Gendered Spatial Experience to explore the differentiated impacts of the Perceived Street Built Environment (PSBE) on the cycling behavior of men and women. Questionnaire data from 285 e-bike and traditional bicycle riders (236 e-bike riders and 49 traditional cyclists, 138 males and 147 females) from Gulou District, Nanjing, between May and October 2023, were used to investigate gender differences in cycling behavior and PSBE using the Mann–Whitney U-test and crossover analysis. Linear regression and logistic regression analyses examined the PSBE impact on gender differences in cycling probability and route choice. The cycling frequency of women was significantly higher than that of men, and their cycling behavior was obviously driven by family responsibilities. Greater gender differences were observed in the PSBE among e-bike riders. Women rated facility accessibility, road accessibility, sense of safety, and spatial comfort significantly lower than men. Clear traffic signals and zebra crossings positively influenced women’s cycling probability. Women were more sensitive to the width of bicycle lanes and street noise, while men’s detours were mainly driven by the convenience of bus connections. We recommend constructing a gender-inclusive cycling environment through intersection optimization, family-friendly routes, lane widening, and noise reduction. This study advances urban science by identifying gendered barriers in cycling infrastructure, providing actionable strategies for equitable transport planning and urban design. Full article
