High-specific-energy lithium-ion batteries face accelerated degradation and safety risks. To ensure stable and safe operation of such batteries in electric vehicles throughout their service life, this study proposes a quantitative aging mechanism analysis method based on electrode equilibrium potential reconstruction under rest conditions. First, by integrating the single-particle electrochemical model with equilibrium potential reconstruction, a quantitative mapping framework between State of Charge (SOC) and electrode lithiation concentration is established. Subsequently, to address the strong nonlinearity between equilibrium potential and lithiation concentration, the State Transition Algorithm (STA) is introduced to solve the high-dimensional coupled parameter identification problem, enhancing aging parameter estimation accuracy. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method was validated using a commercial NCM622/graphite power cell as the research object, and the battery’s aging pathways were analyzed using differential voltage analysis (DVA) and incremental capacity analysis (ICA) methods. Experimental results indicate that the OCV curve fitting achieved a maximum Root Mean Square Error of 0.00932, while quantitatively revealing the degradation patterns of electrode lithiation degrees during aging under both fully charged (SOC = 100%) and fully discharged (SOC = 0%) states. The underutilization of fruit waste in agroindustry—particularly star fruit—leads to leachate generation, emissions, and disposal costs, highlighting the need for circular alternatives that treat organic fractions while producing energy. This study evaluated the bioelectrochemical conversion of carambola (Averrhoa carambola) residues in single-chamber microbial fuel cells (MFCs). Three 1000 mL reactors were constructed using carbon anodes and zinc cathodes, operated for 35 days with continuous voltage recording and daily monitoring of pH, conductivity, and ORP. Polarization curves were obtained, and FTIR and SEM analyses were conducted to characterize substrate transformation and anode colonization. The anodic biofilm was also profiled using metagenomics. Measurements were performed using calibrated electrodes and a data logger with one minute intervals. The systems exhibited rapid startup and reached peak performance on day 22, with a voltage of 1.352 V, current of 3.489 mA, conductivity of 177.90 mS/cm, ORP of 202.01 mV, and pH of 4.89. The V–I curve indicated an internal resistance of 16.51 Ω, and the maximum power density reached 0.517 mW/cm2. FTIR revealed a reduction in bands associated with carbohydrates and proteins, consistent with biodegradation, while SEM confirmed extensive biofilm formation and increased anode surface roughness. Metagenomic analysis showed dominance of Acetobacter (59.35%), with Bacteroides (12.93%) and lactobacilli contributing to fermentative and electrogenic synergies. Finally, the series connection of three MFCs generated 2.71 V, sufficient to power an LED, demonstrating the feasibility of low-power applications and the potential for system scalability. The proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) technology is a highly promising method for hydrogen production. The flow field structure is a key factor affecting the electrolyzer’s performance and overall cost. The commonly used flow field designs are typically parallel flow fields or serpentine flow fields. However, parallel flow fields often suffer from an uneven distribution of reactants, which can negatively impact electrolyzer performance. Serpentine flow fields, on the other hand, exhibit higher pressure drops, leading to increased energy consumption. Furthermore, research on circular planar flow field designs in PEMWE has been limited. Therefore, this study proposes a novel annular flow field design based on a circular plane using Murray’s branching law, with comparative analysis against parallel and serpentine flow fields. This design aims to address the aforementioned issues. A three-dimensional numerical model coupling multiple physical fields was developed with the aim of verifying the effectiveness of the annular flow field design in terms of pressure drop, velocity distribution, temperature distribution, hydrogen distribution, and polarization curves. To confirm the model’s reliability, bipolar plates with the novel annular flow field were fabricated and assembled into a single cell for validation. The results show that the novel annular flow field exhibits optimal electrolytic performance and can significantly improve the uniformity of flow and temperature distribution in PEMWE. At a voltage of 2.6 V, the current density increased by 29.99% and 13.84% compared to the parallel and serpentine flow fields, respectively. The velocity distribution was the most uniform, and the average temperature of the Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA) decreased by approximately 6.08 K and 6.84 K compared to the parallel and serpentine flow fields, respectively. Notably, the pressure drop of the annular flow field was significantly reduced, with reductions of 53.63% and 46.09% compared to the parallel and serpentine flow fields, respectively. This study provides an effective solution for the design of circular plane flow fields in PEMWE. Full article

Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) typically operate in passive mode, where methanol is distributed across the membrane electrode assembly through natural diffusion. Usual methanol concentrations range from 1% to 5% by weight (wt.%), although this can vary depending on the specific configuration and application. In this work, the effect of an additional pumping system to supply the methanol has been analyzed by varying the methanol flow rate within the pump’s range. To this end, a parametric experimental study was carried out to study the influence of temperature (25–40 °C), concentration (0.15–6 wt.% methanol in water), and the flow rate of methanol (1.12–8.65 g/s) on the performance of a single mini-direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) operating in semi-passive mode with a passive cathode and an active anode. Open circuit voltage, maximum power density, and cell efficiency were analyzed. To this purpose, open circuit voltage and current–voltage curves were measured in different experimental conditions. Results indicate that temperature is the most decisive parameter to increase DMFC performance. For all methanol concentrations and flow rates, performance improves with higher operating temperatures. However, the impact of the concentration and flow rate depends on the other parameters. The operating optimal concentration was 1% wt. At this concentration, a maximum power of 14.2 mW was achieved at 40 °C with a methanol flow of 7.6 g/s. Under these same conditions, the cell also reached its maximum efficiency of 23%. The results show that switching from passive to semi-passive mode generally increases open-circuit voltage and maximum power, thus improving fuel cell performance, likely due to the enhanced uniform distribution of the reactant in semi-passive mode. However, further increases in flow rate led to a decrease in performance, probably due to the methanol crossover effect. An optimal methanol flow rate is observed, depending on methanol flow temperature and concentration. Full article

Recently, much research has focused on the search for new mixed donor–acceptor layers for applications in organic electronics. Organic heterostructures with layers based on the generation 1 poly(propylene thiophenoimine) (G1PPT) dendrimer, N,N′-diisopropylnaphthalene diimide (MNDI), and a combination of the two were prepared and their electrical properties were investigated. Single layers of G1PPT and MNDI and a mixed layer (G1PPT:MNDI) were obtained via spin coating on quartz glass, silicon, and glass/ITO substrates, using chloroform as a solvent. The absorption mechanism was investigated, the degree of disorder was estimated, and the emission properties of the layers were highlighted using spectroscopic methods (UV–Vis transmission and photoluminescence). The effects of the concentration and surface topographical particularities on the properties of the layers were analyzed via atomic force microscopy. All of the heterostructures realized with ITO and Au electrodes showed good conduction, with currents of the order of mA. Additionally, the heterostructure with a mixed layer exhibited asymmetry in the current–voltage curve between forward and reverse polarization in the lower range of the applied voltages, which was more significant at increased concentrations and could be correlated with rectifier diode behavior. Consequently, the mixed-layer generation 1 poly(propylene thiophenoimine) dendrimer with N,N′-diisopropylnaphthalene diimide can be considered promising for electronic applications. Full article

To obtain highly efficient yet easily produced water-splitting cathodes, Ni-MoO2 composite coatings were electrodeposited at a Ni foam substrate with an open-pore structure, pore size of 450 µm, in a Watts-type bath. The concentration of MoO2 particles (about 100 nm) was varied, while the intensive mixing of the solution was provided by air bubbling with 0.5 L min−1. Electrodeposition was performed at different constant current densities at room temperature. The morphology and composition of the coatings were investigated by SEM and EDS. The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) was tested in KOH of different concentrations, at several temperatures, in a three-electrode H-cell by recording polarization curves and EIS measurements. The lowest achieved HER overpotential was −158 mV at −0.5 A cm−2. Up-scaled samples, 3 × 3.3 cm2, were tested in a single zero-gap cell showing decreasing cell voltage (from 2.18 V to 2.11 V) at 0.5 A cm−2 over 5 h in 30% KOH at 70 °C with electrolyte flow rate of 58 mL min−1. Compared to pure Ni foams used as both cathode and anode under the same conditions, the cell voltage is decreased by 200 mV, showing improved electrode performance. Full article

In this paper, bismuth (Bi) was successfully deposited on graphite felts to improve the electrochemical performances of vanadium redox flow batteries. Modified graphite felts with different Bi particle loadings were obtained through electrochemical deposition at voltages of 0.8 V, 1.2 V and 1.6 V in 0.1 M BiCl3 solution for 10 min. The optimal Bi particle loading was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), single cells and electrochemical tests. The SEM images revealed the deposition of granular Bi particles on the fiber surface. The Bi-modified felts which were electro-chemically deposited at 1.2 V (Bi/TGF-1.2V) showed excellent electrochemical performances in cyclic voltammetry curves and impedance spectroscopy. Meanwhile, the single cells assembled with Bi/TGF-1.2V as negative electrodes exhibited higher voltage efficiencies than the others. The optimized Bi particle loading induced better catalysis of the V3+/V2+ reaction and hence significantly improved the cell performances. In addition, the prepared Bi-modified felts showed stable cell performances and slower charge–discharge capacity declines than the other electrodes at current densities between 20 mA/cm2 and 80 mA/cm2. Compared with the pristine felt, the voltage efficiency of the vanadium redox flow battery assembled with Bi/TGF-1.2V graphite felt was 9.47% higher at the current density of 80 mA/cm2. The proposed method has considerable potential and guiding significance for the future modification of graphite felt for redox flow batteries. Full article

In this research, a thin layer of multi-metallic non-precious catalyst is prepared by electroplating from an electrolyte bath containing Ni, Co, and Fe sulfates over pressed commercial nickel foam electrode. The composition of the deposited catalytic film and its morphology are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersion X-ray (EDX) techniques. The efficiency of the prepared binder-free electrodes for electrochemical water splitting is investigated in a self-designed short water electrolysis stack with zero-gap configuration of the integrated single cells and hybrid electrical connections. The separator used is a commercial Zirfon Perl 500 membrane, doped with 25% KOH. The performance of the catalyst, the single cells, and the developed electrolyzer stack are examined by steady state polarization curves and stationery galvanostatic stability tests in the temperature range 20 °C to 80 °C. The NiFeCoP multi-metallic alloy demonstrates superior catalytic efficiency compared to the pure nickel foam electrodes and reliable stability with time. The single cells in the stack show identical performance and the cumulative stack parameters strictly follow the theoretical considerations. The applied hybrid electrical connections enable scaling of both the stack voltage and the passing current, which in turn ensures flexibility with regard to the input power and the hydrogen production capacity. BiFeO3/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (BFO/LSMO) epitaxial heterostructures were successfully synthesized by pulsed laser deposition on (001)-oriented SrTiO3 single-crystal substrates with Au top electrodes. Stable bipolar resistive switching characteristics regulated by ferroelectric polarization reversal was observed in the Au/BFO/LSMO heterostructures. The conduction mechanism was revealed to follow the Schottky emission model, and the Schottky barriers in high-resistance and low-resistance states were estimated based on temperature-dependent current–voltage curves. Further, the observed memristive behavior was interpreted via the modulation effect on the depletion region width and the Schottky barrier height caused by ferroelectric polarization reversal, combining with the oxygen vacancies migration near the BFO/LSMO interface. The layered van der Waals CuInP2S6 (CIPS) features interesting functional behaviors, including reversible ferroelectric polarization, Cu ion migration, negative capacitance effect, etc. Here, the CIPS flakes were exfoliated from the CVT-grown high-quality single crystals, which were fabricated into metal/CIPS/metal heterostructures by conventional photolithography. It was found that the CIPS flakes persisted in the dominant out-of-plane polarization and the minor in-plane polarization. Clear hysteresis current–voltage (I–V) loops, as well as the rectifying character, were revealed in metal/CIPS/metal heterostructures, indicating the potential application as a memory device. Additionally, the different metal electrode could significantly modulate the Schottky-like barrier at metal/CIPS interfaces, resulting in symmetric or asymmetric I–V loops. The complicated I–V curves may have originated from the voltage-induced Cu ion migration, reversible ferroelectric polarization, and carrier (ion) trapping/detrapping. This work may facilitate the metal electrode selection for the ferroelectric CIPS-based device application. Full article

This article presents a comparison of hysteresis courses in the motion of a two-input actuator (bimorph) and hysteresis in the motion of a single-input actuator (unimorph). The comparison was based on the results of laboratory and numerical experiments, the subject of which was an actuator built of three layers: a carrier layer from a glass-reinforced epoxy laminate and two piezoelectric layers from Macro Fiber Composite. The layers were glued together, and electrodes in the Macro Fiber Composite layers were connected to a system that included an analogue/digital board and a voltage amplifier. The main purpose of this research was to compare the characteristic points of the hysteresis curves of the displacement of the bimorph actuator with the characteristic points of the hysteresis curves of the unimorph actuator. Based on the research results, it was noticed that, in the bimorph, the maximum hysteresis and mean hysteresis values increase faster than the maximum displacement of a beam tip. However, values of characteristic input voltages for hysteresis loops—voltage corresponding to a maximum displacement of the actuator beam tip and voltage corresponding to maximum hysteresis—are almost the same for the bimorph and unimorph. From a practical point of view, it was noticed that the unimorph is a better choice compared to the bimorph in applications in which high changes in frequencies of input voltages appear. Full article

A flexible silver-zinc fabric-based primary battery that is biocompatible, conformable, and suitable for single-use wearable biomedical devices is reported. The planar battery was fabricated by screen printing silver/silver-chloride and zinc electrodes (14 mm × 8 mm) onto a silk substrate. A biologically relevant fluid, phosphate buffered saline was used as a liquid electrolyte for characterization. Cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and current discharge properties at constant densities of 0.89 μA/cm2, 8.93 μA/cm2, and 89.29 μA/cm2 were used to quantify battery performance. Nine cells were placed in series to generate a greater open circuit voltage (>6 V) relevant to previously reported biomedical applications. The nine-cell battery was evaluated for operation under mechanical strain due to likely placement on curved surfaces of the body in wearable applications. The nine-cell battery was discharged over 4 h at 8.93 μA/cm2 in an unstrained condition. The mechanically strained battery when mounted to a mannequin to mimic anatomical curvature discharged up to 30 min faster. Additionally, the nine-cell battery was used in an in vitro wound model to power an electroceutical, showing promise towards practical use in active, corrosive, and potentially biohazardous environments. It is necessary to develop new drilling and breaking technology for hard rock construction. However, the process of high-voltage electro-pulse (HVEP) rock-breaking is complex, and the selection of electro-pulse boring (EPB) process parameters lacks a theoretical basis. Firstly, the RLC model, TV-RLC model, and TV-CRLC model are established based on the characteristics of the HVEP circuit to predict the EPB dynamic discharge curve. Secondly, the parameters are identified by the Particle Swarm Optimization Genetic Algorithm (PSO-GA). Finally, due to the nonlinear and complex time-varying characteristics of the discharge circuit, the discharge circuit prediction models based on Bayesian fusion and current residual normalization fusion method are proposed, and the optimal weight of these three models is determined. Compared with the single models for EPB current prediction, the average relative error reduction rates based on Bayesian fusion and current residual normalization fusion methods are 25.5% and 9.5%, respectively. In this paper, the discharge circuit prediction model based on Bayesian fusion is established, which improves the prediction accuracy and reliability of the model, and it guides the selection of process parameters and the design of pulse power supply and electrode bits. Electrorheological (ER) polishing, as a new ultra-precision super-effect polishing method, provides little damage to the workpiece surface and is suitable for polishing all kinds of small and complex curved surface workpieces. In this paper, an ER polishing tool with an annular integrated electrode is developed. The orthogonal experiments are carried out on the six influencing factors of ER polishing which include the applied voltage, the abrasive particle size, the abrasive concentration, the polishing gap, the polishing time and the tool spindle speed. The influence order of these six factors on the ER polishing is obtained. On this basis, the effect of a single process parameter of ER polishing on surface roughness is studied experimentally. In order to realize the diagnosis of water distribution, this paper analyzes the interface polarization and macroscopic space charge polarization mechanism when the water distribution is non-uniform. The experimental results of this paper and bushing show that when the moisture distribution is non-uniform, there is a significant loss peak in the tanδ-f curve. The loss peak shifts to higher frequencies as the non-uniformity coefficient increases. There are common intersection points between multiple tanδ-f curves. Further, this paper realizes the diagnosis of the location of moisture distribution through Frequency Domain Spectroscopy (FDS) testing of different voltages and different wiring methods based on the macroscopic space charge polarization. In the single-cycle FDS test, when the positive electrode is first added to the area with higher moisture content, the amplitude of the tanδ-f curve is smaller. The tanδ-f curves under different wiring methods constitute a “ring-shaped” loss peak. As the voltage increases, the peak value of the loss peak shifts to the lower frequency band. As the temperature increases, the peak value of the loss peak shifts to higher frequencies. Based on the above rules and mechanism analysis, this research provides a new solution for the evaluation of moisture content of oil-immersed polymers equipment. Full article
