The systematic economic development of European Union member states has resulted in a dynamic increase in road transport, accompanied by adverse environmental impacts. Consequently, research efforts have focused on identifying technical solutions to reduce fuel and/or energy consumption. One promising approach involves the formation of homogeneous and heterogeneous vehicle platoons. This study presents the results of numerical simulations and analyses of aerodynamic and aeroacoustic phenomena generated by heterogeneous vehicle platoons composed of passenger cars, delivery vans, and trucks. A total of 54 numerical models were developed in various configurations, considering three vehicle speeds and three inter-vehicle distances. The analysis was conducted using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methods with the following two turbulence models: the k–ω Shear Stress Transport (SST) model and Large Eddy Simulation (LES), combined with the Ffowcs Williams–Hawkings acoustic analogy to determine sound pressure levels. Verification calculations were performed using methods dedicated to environmental noise analysis, supplemented by acoustic field measurements. The results conclusively demonstrate that vehicle movement in specific platoon configurations can lead to significant fuel and/or energy savings, as well as reductions in harmful emissions. This solution may be implemented in the future as an integral component of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs) and Intelligent Environmental Management Systems (IEMSs). Full article

Coke is an essential raw material in the blast furnace (BF) ironmaking process. Its moisture content significantly impacts BF ironmaking production. This study employs a coupled Computational Fluid Dynamics–Discrete Element Method (CFD-DEM) approach to simulate the drying process of wet coke within a coke silo (CS) dryer. Initially, the model was validated by comparing numerical results with experimental data from the literature. Subsequently, it investigated the gas flow dynamics, heat and mass transfer characteristics, and differences in drying behaviour across distinct dryer zones. Finally, the effects of inlet gas velocity and inlet gas temperature on the drying process were systematically quantified. Simulation results reveal that the bottom of the CS dryer exhibits a low-velocity laminar state, while the middle and upper regions display intense gas flow motion. Consequently, the bottom region exhibits insufficient particle drying in comparison to other zones, with the average particle moisture content decreasing by less than 20%. Under the continuous heat exchange between the hot gas and the particles, the moisture content of the particles decreases rapidly. Based on the drying rate behaviour, the drying process exhibits the following three different stages: the pre-heating period, the constant-rate period, and the falling-rate period. Compared to zones 1 and 3, zone 2 exhibits higher temperatures due to its high heat transfer efficiency, which significantly promotes a reduction in particle moisture content. An increase in inlet gas velocity enhances the particle drying rate and heat flux, accelerates moisture reduction, and raises the temperature. The impact of inlet gas velocity is most pronounced after the constant-rate period, with particle drying uniformity decreasing as the inlet gas velocity increases, consequently leading to a decline in drying quality. Increasing inlet gas temperature significantly increases particle temperature and heat flux throughout the drying period and accelerates the high-rate drying stage. These findings provide fundamental insights for further understanding and studying the coke drying process. Full article

Meissner’s corpuscles are essential mechanoreceptors that detect low-frequency vibrations. However, the internal fluid dynamic processes that convert directional mechanical stimuli into neural signals are not yet fully understood. This study aims to clarify the direction-specific sensing mechanism by analyzing internal fluid flow and shear stress distribution under different vibration modes. A biomimetic microfluidic platform was developed and coupled with a dynamic mesh computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model to simulate the response of the corpuscle to 20 Hz normal and tangential vibrations. The simulation results showed clear differences in fluid behavior. Normal vibration produced localized vortices and peak wall shear stress greater than 0.0054 Pa along the short axis. In contrast, tangential vibration generated stable laminar flow with a lower average shear stress of about 0.0012 Pa along the long axis. These results suggest that the internal structure of the Meissner corpuscle is important for converting mechanical inputs from different directions into specific fluid patterns. This study provides a physical foundation for understanding mechanotransduction and supports the design of biomimetic sensors with improved directional sensitivity for use in smart skin and soft robotic systems. Understanding the fluid storage and production mechanisms in sedimentary rocks is vital for optimising natural gas extraction and subsurface resource management. This study applies high-resolution X-ray computed tomography (≈15 μm) to digitise rock samples from onshore Cyprus, producing digital rock models from DICOM images. The workflow, including digitisation, numerical simulation of natural gas flow, and experimental validation, demonstrates strong agreement between digital and laboratory-measured porosity, confirming the methods’ reliability. Synthetic sand packs generated via particle-based modelling provide further insight into the gas storage mechanisms. A linear porosity–permeability relationship was observed, with porosity increasing from 0 to 35% and permeability from 0 to 3.34 mD. Permeability proved critical for production, as a rise from 1.5 to 3 mD nearly doubled the gas flow rate (14 to 30 fm3/s). Grain morphology also influenced gas storage. Increasing roundness enhanced porosity from 0.30 to 0.41, boosting stored gas volume by 47.6% to 42 fm3. Although based on Cyprus retrieved samples, the methodology is applicable to sedimentary formations elsewhere. The findings have implications for enhanced oil recovery, CO2 sequestration, hydrogen storage, and groundwater extraction. This work highlights digital rock physics as a scalable technology for investigating transport behaviour in porous media and improving characterisation of complex sedimentary reservoirs. Full article

This study uses the CREATETM-AV/Kestrel simulation software to model a towed jumper scenario using standard aircraft settings to quantify paratrooper stability and risk of contact during static line airborne operations. The focus areas of this study include a review of the technical build-up, which includes aircraft, paratrooper and static line modeling, plus preliminary functional checkouts executed to verify simulation performance. This research and simulation development effort is driven by the need to meet the analysis demands required to support the US Army Personnel Airdrop with static line length studies and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Joint Airdrop Capability Syndicate (JACS) with airdrop interoperability assessments. Each project requires the use of various aircraft types, static line lengths and exit procedures. To help meet this need and establish a baseline proof of concept (POC) simulation, simulation setups were developed for a towed jumper from both the C-130J and C-17 using a 20-ft static line to support US Army Personnel Airdrop efforts. Concurrently, the JACS is requesting analysis to support interoperability testing to help qualify the T-11 parachute from an Airbus A400M Atlas aircraft, operated by NATO nations. Due to the lack of an available A400M geometry, the C-17 was used to demonstrate the POC, and plans to substitute the geometry are in order when it becomes available. The results of a nominal Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation run using a C-17 and C-130J will be reviewed with a sample of the output to help characterize performance differences for the aircraft settings selected. The US Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Soldier Center (DEVCOM-SC) Aerial Delivery Division (ADD) has partnered with the US Air Force Academy (USAFA) High Performance Computing Research Center (HPCRC) to enable Modeling and Simulation (M&S) capabilities that support the Warfighter and NATO airdrop interoperability efforts. This study compares enhanced turbulence models in a natural river channel 3D simulation under extreme hydrometeorological conditions. Using ANSYS Fluent 2024 R1 and the Volume of Fluid scheme, five RANS closures were evaluated: realizable k–ε, Renormalization-Group k–ε, Shear Stress Transport k–ω, Generalized k–ω, and Baseline-Explicit Algebraic Reynolds Stress model. A segment of the Santa Catarina River in Monterrey, Mexico, defined the computational domain, which produced high-energy, non-repeatable real-world flow conditions where hydrometric data were not yet available. Empirical validation was conducted using surface velocity estimations obtained through high-resolution video analysis. Systematic bias was minimized through mesh-independent validation (<1% error) and a benchmarked reference closure, ensuring a fair basis for inter-model comparison. All models were realized on a validated polyhedral mesh with consistent boundary conditions, evaluating performance in terms of mean velocity, turbulent viscosity, strain rate, and vorticity. Mean velocity predictions matched the empirical value of 4.43 [m/s]. The Baseline model offered the highest overall fidelity in turbulent viscosity structure (up to 43 [kg/m·s]) and anisotropy representation. Simulation runtimes ranged from 10 to 16 h, reflecting a computational cost that increases with model complexity but justified by improved flow anisotropy representation. Results show that all models yielded similar mean flow predictions within a narrow error margin. However, they differed notably in resolving low-velocity zones, turbulence intensity, and anisotropy within a purely hydrodynamic framework that does not include sediment transport. Full article

The use of additive manufacturing (AM) has seen increased utilization over the last decade, thanks to well-documented advantages such as lower startup costs, reduced wastage, and the ability to rapidly prototype. The poor surface finish of unprocessed AM components is one of the major drawbacks of this technology, with the research literature suggesting a measurable impact on flow characteristics and burner operability. For instance, surface roughness has been shown to potentially increase resistance to boundary layer flashback—an area of high concern, particularly when utilizing fuels with high hydrogen content. A more detailed understanding of the underlying thermophysical mechanisms is, therefore, required. Computational fluid dynamics can help elucidate the impact of these roughness effects by enabling detailed data interrogation in locations not easily accessible experimentally. In this study, roughness effects on a generic gas turbine swirler were numerically modeled using a low-y+ detached eddy simulation (DES) approach. Three DES models were investigated utilizing a smooth reference case and two rough cases, the latter employing a literature-based and novel equivalent sand-grain roughness (ks) correlation developed for this work. Existing experimental isothermal and CH4 data were used to validate the numerical simulations. Detailed investigations into the effects of roughness on flow characteristics, such as swirl number and recirculation zone position, were subsequently performed. The results show that literature-based ks correlations are unsuitable for the current application. The novel correlation yields more promising outcomes, though its effectiveness depends on the chosen turbulence model. Moreover, it was demonstrated that, for identical ks values, while trends remained consistent, the extent to which they manifested differed under reacting and isothermal conditions. Full article

Explosions, including those from war weapons, terrorist attacks, etc., can lead to damage and overall collapse of bridges. However, there are no clear guidelines for anti-blast design and protective measures for bridges under blast loading in current bridge design specifications. With advancements in intelligent construction, precast segmental bridge piers have become a major trend in social development. There is a lack of full understanding of the anti-blast performance of precast segmental bridge piers. To study the engineering calculation method for blast load acting on a typical precast segmental reinforced concrete (RC) pier in near-field explosions, an air explosion test of the precast segmental RC pier is firstly carried out, then a fluid–structure coupling numerical model of the precast segmental RC pier is established and the interaction between the explosion shock wave and the precast segmental RC pier is discussed. A numerical simulation of the precast segmental RC pier in a near-field explosion is conducted based on a reliable numerical model, and the distribution of the blast load acting on the precast segmental RC pier in the near-field explosion is analyzed. The results show that the reflected overpressure on the pier and the incident overpressure in the free field are reliable. The simulation results are basically consistent with the experimental results (with a relative error of less than 8%), and the fluid–structure coupling model is reasonable and reliable. The explosion shock wave has effects of reflection and circulation on the precast segmental RC pier. In the near-field explosion, the back and side blast loads acting on the precast segmental RC bridge pier can be ignored in the blast-resistant design. The front blast loads can be simplified and equalized, and a blast-resistant design load coefficient (1, 0.2, 0.03, 0.02, and 0.01) and a calculation formula of maximum equivalent overpressure peak value (applicable scaled distance [0.175 m/kg1/3, 0.378 m/kg1/3]) are proposed, which can be used as a reference for the blast-resistant design of precast segmental RC piers. This study numerically investigates the effect of hydrofoil installation on the motion responses and ride comfort of a 20 m monohull vessel operating at 10 knots in regular waves. Linear seakeeping analysis (Maxsurf Motions) and nonlinear computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations (STAR-CCM+) are performed to compute response-amplitude operators (RAOs); for the bare hull, the two methods agree within 5%, confirming methodological reliability. The CFD results show that hydrofoils reduce heave and pitch amplitudes by approximately 16% on average. Motion Sickness Incidence (MSI) analysis indicates negligible seasickness under Gentle Breeze conditions, even during prolonged exposure; under Moderate conditions, no seasickness is predicted within 30 min across all encounter frequencies. Although linear analysis cannot directly estimate MSI for hydrofoil-fitted cases, the observed reductions in RAOs imply improved ride comfort. Overall, these findings demonstrate that hydrofoils can enhance motion stability and passenger comfort in small, low-speed vessels, providing quantitative evidence to support design applications. Radiation-induced intestinal injury (RIII), a severe complication of abdominopelvic radiotherapy, causes intestinal ischemia, ulcers, and necrosis, severely impacting patients’ quality of life. Currently, effective treatments are limited, and a specific cure remains elusive. Our previous research showed that lactoferrin (LF) can promote intestinal stem cell (ISC) proliferation and tissue repair; however, its oral administration is limited by rapid degradation in the gastric environment. In this study, we developed LF-loaded liposomal nanoparticles (Lip-LF) using a simple ethanol injection method. The optimal formulation (cholesterol/egg yolk lecithin ratio 2:8, LF concentration 12.5 mg/mL) achieved a drug-loading capacity of 6.8% and a narrow size distribution (0.2 < PDI < 0.4). In vitro experiments demonstrated that Lip-LF protected LF from pepsin degradation in simulated gastric fluid (SGF), retaining over 80% integrity after 120 min, while releasing in simulated intestinal fluid (SIF). In vivo imaging revealed prolonged gastrointestinal retention of Lip-LF compared to free LF. In a murine model of RIII (12 Gy whole-body irradiation), Lip-LF significantly restored villus counts, increased crypt height, and promoted goblet-cell regeneration. Immunohistochemical and qPCR analyses revealed enhanced ISCs proliferation and upregulation of repair-associated genes, including Pcna and Olfm4. These findings demonstrate that Lip-LF protects LF from gastric degradation and enhances its targeted delivery to the intestine, improving its therapeutic efficacy in repairing RIII. Lip-LF thus offers a promising strategy for managing RIII. Full article

The global shift towards cleaner energy sources is driving the adoption of hydrogen as an environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuels. Among the forms currently available, Liquid Hydrogen (LH2) offers high energy density and efficient storage, making it suitable for large-scale transport by rail. However, the flammability of hydrogen poses serious safety concerns, especially when transported through confined spaces such as railway tunnels. In case of an accidental LH2 release from a freight train, the rapid accumulation and potential ignition of hydrogen could cause catastrophic consequences, especially if freight and passenger trains are present simultaneously in the same tunnel tube. In this study, a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics model was developed to simulate the dispersion and explosion of LH2 following an accidental leak from a freight train’s cryo-container in a single-tube double-track railway tunnel, when a passenger train queues behind it on the same track. The overpressure results were analyzed using probit functions to estimate the fatality probabilities for the passenger train’s occupants. The analysis suggests that a significant number of fatalities could be expected among the passengers. However, shorter users’ evacuation times from the passenger train’s wagons and/or longer distances between the two types of trains might reduce the number of potential fatalities. The findings, by providing additional insight into the risks associated with LH2 transport in railway tunnels, indicate the need for risk mitigation measures and/or traffic management strategies. Low-Salinity Water Flooding (LSWF) has gained attention for its cost-effectiveness and environmental advantages, yet its underlying mechanisms remain not fully understood. Oil recovery in LSWF is primarily governed by interfacial dynamics and formation wettability. This research investigates the effects of seawater dilution in carbonate reservoirs through laboratory analyses and displacement experiments. Results show that oil recovery efficiency is largely driven by rock–fluid interactions rather than fluid–fluid interactions, with optimal brine concentrations enhancing wettability alteration, boundary flexibility, and mineral leaching. These findings highlight the importance of considering both fluid–rock interactions and mineral reactivity, rather than attributing recovery to a single mechanism. Molecular dynamics simulations further supported the experimental observations. Overall, the study emphasizes that early and well-designed low-salinity injection strategies can maximize LSWF performance. The results elucidate the key interaction mechanisms between surfactants and the various components of heavy oil through atomic-scale precision modeling and dynamic process tracking. These simulations clarify, at the microscopic level, the differences in displacement dynamics and efficiency of organic solvent systems toward different hydrocarbon components. Full article

Several experimental and numerical studies have been conducted on the towing behavior of floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs); however, these studies mainly focus on tension-leg platform (TLP) and semi-submersible designs with cylindrical features. The University of Maine’s VolturnUS+ concept is a cruciform-shaped barge-type FOWT with distinctive hydrodynamic properties that have not been characterized in previous research. This study presents basin-scale experiments that characterize the hydrodynamic drag properties of the VolturnUS+ platform, as well as observing the motion behavior of the platform and added resistance during towing in calm water and waves. The towing experiments are conducted in two towing configurations, with differing platform orientations and towline designs. The basin experiments are supplemented with a numerical study using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations to explore flow-induced motion (FIM) on the platform during towing. In both the experiments and the CFD simulations, it was determined that the towing configuration significantly impacted the drag and motion characteristics of the platform, with the cruciform shape producing FIM phenomena. Observations from the towing tests confirmed the feasibility of towing the VolturnUS+ platform in the two orientations. The results and observations developed from the experimental and numerical towing studies will be used to inform numerical models for planning towing operations, as well as develop informed recommendations for towing similar cruciform-shaped structures in the future. Improving Air Distribution Within Lettuce Plant Canopy by Employing Double-Channel Ventilation Cultivation System: Simulation and Experiment Study

In greenhouse and plant factory production, improper design of the ventilation system and increasing scales will lead to a stagnant airflow zone, which could inhibit plant growth and induce physiological disease, such as tipburn. To increase the airflow within the plant canopy, simplify the equipment complexity, and improve operation convenience, a cultivation system was designed to provide a constant airflow within the plant canopy by integrating ventilation ducts with cultivation tanks. A three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (ANSYS Fluent 2021R2) model was developed and validated through simulating the airflow distribution within the plant canopy under different intake air velocities. According to the simulated results, an intake air velocity of 10 m s−1 showed better airflow uniformity, and the proportion of the suitable zone reached the highest value of 83% at an intake air velocity of 20 m s−1. To validate the practical effectiveness of cultivation, a cultivation experiment was conducted. Five different canopy air velocities were set at 0 (CK), 0.35 (T1), 0.5 (T2), 0.65 (T3), and 0.8 (T4) m s−1, respectively. The results showed that the photosynthetic and transpiration rate, as well as the fresh and dry weights of lettuce plants (Lactuca sativa cv. ‘Tiberius’), increased by 17.8%, 21.7%, 29.6%, and 29.9%, respectively, under treatment T4 compared to those under the control, while the canopy air temperature and relative humidity decreased by 1.3 °C and 3.2%, respectively. The above results indicate that the newly designed cultivation system can be considered an effective system for improving lettuce plant growth and its canopy environment. Full article

Comparative Analysis of Local Flow Fields of Typical Inner Jet Holes-Type Reverse Circulation Drill Bit for Pneumatic Hollow-Through DTH Hammer Based on CFD Simulation

The reverse circulation drill bit is the key component for the efficient and smooth implementation of the pneumatic hollow-through down-the-hole (DTH) hammer reverse circulation continuous coring (sampling) technology. To obtain the structural form of a reverse circulation drill bit with better reverse circulation performance, revealing its local flow fields by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation is an effective approach. Taking the inner jet holes-type reverse circulation drill bit as the research object, three kinds of symmetrical and asymmetrical structures of inner jet holes were proposed. The CFD simulation results show that increasing the air volume supply and the number of inner jet holes leads to an increase in the velocity of air flow jet within the inner jet holes, an increase in the negative pressure formed in the central through channel below the inner jet holes, an enhancement of the reverse circulation performance and suction capacity formed by the reverse circulation drill bit, and an acceleration of the upward flow velocity of the rock cores (samples) located at the bottom of the borehole. Additionally, the reverse circulation performance formed by the reverse circulation drill bit with staggered arranged inner jet holes is superior to that of the reverse circulation drill bit with uniformly distributed inner jet holes. Under the same simulation conditions, the static pressure (i.e., negative pressure) and the upward flow velocity formed by the JB6 model are 2.34 kPa and 30.778 m/s higher than those formed by the JB3-3 model, while these two values formed by the JC6 model are 0.197 kPa and 3.689 m/s higher than those formed by the JB6 model, respectively. In conclusion, an asymmetric structural design would be more reasonable for the design of the inner jet holes-type reverse circulation drill bit. Full article
