One of the fundamental goals of contemporary mobility is to optimize transport processes in urban areas. The solution in this area seems to be the implementation of the idea of sustainable transport systems based on the Smart City concept. The article presents a case study—an assessment of the possibilities of changing mobility habits based on the idea of sustainable urban transport, taking into account the criterion of energy consumption of individual means of transport. The analyses are based on a comparison of selected means of transport occurring in the urban environment according to several key parameters for the optimization and efficiency of transport processes, i.e., cost, time, travel comfort, and impact on the natural environment, while simultaneously linking them to the criterion of energy consumption of individual means of transport. The analyzed parameters currently constitute the most important group of challenges in the area of shaping and planning optimal and sustainable urban transport. The presented research was used to indicate the connections between various areas of optimization of the transport process and the energy efficiency of individual modes of transport. Analyses have shown that the least time-consuming process of urban mobility is associated with the highest level of CO2 emissions and, at the same time, the highest level of energy efficiency. However, combining public transport with other means of transport can meet most of the transport expectations of city residents, also in terms of energy optimization. The research results presented in the article can contribute to the creation of a strategy for the development of the transport network based on the postulates of increasing the optimization and efficiency of individual means of transport in urban areas. At the same time, recognizing the criterion of energy intensity of means of transport as leading in the development of sustainable urban mobility. Thus, confirming the important role of existing transport systems in the process of shaping and planning sustainable urban mobility in accordance with the idea of Smart City. Full article

Bacterial communities within the female upper genital tract may influence the risk of ovarian cancer. In this retrospective cohort pilot study, we aim to detect different communities of bacteria between ovarian cancer and normal controls using topic modeling, a natural language processing tool. RNA was extracted and analyzed using the VITCOMIC2 pipeline. Topic modeling assessed differences in bacterial communities. Idatuning identified an optimal latent topic number and Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) assessed topic differences between high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC) and controls. Results were validated using The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) HGSOC dataset. A total of 801 unique taxa were identified, with 13 bacteria significantly differing between HGSOC and normal controls. LDA modeling revealed a latent topic associated with HGSOC samples, containing bacteria Escherichia/Shigella and Corynebacterineae. Pathway analysis using KEGG databases suggest differences in several biologic pathways including oocyte meiosis, aldosterone-regulated sodium reabsorption, gastric acid secretion, and long-term potentiation. These findings support the hypothesis that bacterial communities in the upper female genital tract may influence the development of HGSOC by altering the local environment, with potential functional implications between HGSOC and normal controls. However, further validation is required to confirms these associations and determine mechanistic relevance. Full article

This study introduces a novel methodology for assessing ice-jam flood hazards along river channels. It employs empirical equations that relate non-dimensional ice-jam stage to discharge, enabling the generation of an ensemble of longitudinal profiles of ice-jam backwater levels through Monte-Carlo simulations. These simulations produce non-exceedance probability profiles, which indicate the likelihood of various flood levels occurring due to ice jams. The flood levels associated with specific return periods were validated using historical gauge records. The empirical equations require input parameters such as channel width, slope, and thalweg elevation, which were obtained from bathymetric surveys. This approach is applied to assess ice-jam flood hazards by extrapolating data from a gauged reach at Fort Simpson to an ungauged reach at Jean Marie River along the Mackenzie River in Canada’s Northwest Territories. The analysis further suggests that climate change is likely to increase the severity of ice-jam flood hazards in both reaches by the end of the century. This methodology is applicable to other cold-region rivers in Canada and northern Europe, provided similar fluvial geomorphological and hydro-meteorological data are available, making it a valuable tool for ice-jam flood risk assessment in other ungauged areas. Branched-Chain Amino Acids Combined with Exercise Improves Physical Function and Quality of Life in Older Adults: Results from a Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial

This pilot, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial investigated the effects of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs)—provided in a 2:1:1 ratio of leucine:isoleucine:valine—combined with exercise on fatigue, physical performance, and quality of life in older adults. Twenty participants (63% female; BMI: 35 ± 2 kg/m2; age: 70.5 ± 1.2 years) were randomized to 8 weeks of either exercise + BCAAs (100 mg/kg body weight/d) or exercise + placebo. The program included moderate aerobic and resistance training three times weekly. Physical function was assessed using handgrip strength, chair stands, gait speed, VO2 max, and a 400 m walk. Psychological health was evaluated using the CES-D, Fatigue Assessment Scale (FAS), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), and global pain, fatigue, and quality of life using a visual analog scale (VAS). Significant group x time interactions were found for handgrip strength (p = 0.03), chair stands (p < 0.01), and 400 m walk time (p < 0.01). Compared to exercise + placebo, exercise + BCAAs showed greater improvements in strength, mobility, and endurance, along with reductions in fatigue (−45% vs. +92%) and depressive symptoms (−29% vs. +5%). Time effects were also observed for ISI (−30%), FAS (−21%), and VAS quality of life (16%) following exercise + BCAA supplementation. These preliminary results suggest that BCAAs combined with exercise may be an effective way to improve physical performance and reduce fatigue and depressive symptoms in older adults. Full article

Social trust has been linked to the development and severity of depression, but trust is a complex, multidimensional construct. This study examines the extent to which two distinct forms of trust, general trust and specific trust, predict depressive symptoms. Drawing on longitudinal data from the Directorate of Health’s national surveys conducted in 2007 and 2009, the analysis includes responses from 3211 Icelanders selected through a stratified random sample. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS), while specific trust captured trust in close relationships, and general trust measured broader perceptions of trustworthiness in others. The two forms of trust together explained 7.6% of the variance in depressive symptoms, with specific trust contributing a substantially greater share. Both remained significant predictors after controlling for prior depression and physical health. These findings highlight the protective role of specific trust and suggest that general trust, an indicator of broader social capital, may also help buffer against depression. The results underscore the relevance of trust as a public health resource and support continued research into social determinants of mental health in Iceland. Full article

Faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is an emerging therapy for gastrointestinal and neurological disorders, acting via the microbiota–gut–brain axis. Altering gut microbial composition may influence cognitive function, but this has not been tested in cognitively healthy adults. This randomised, double-blinded, placebo-controlled pilot trial investigates whether FMT is feasible and improves cognition in adults with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Participants receive a single dose of FMT or placebo via rectal retention enema. Cognitive performance is the primary outcome, assessed using the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB). Secondary outcomes include IBS symptom severity and mood. Tertiary outcomes include microbiome composition and plasma biomarkers related to inflammation, short-chain fatty acids, and tryptophan metabolism. Outcomes are assessed at baseline and at one, three, six, and twelve months following treatment. We hypothesise that FMT will lead to greater improvements in cognitive performance than placebo, with benefits extending beyond practice effects, emerging at one month and persisting in the long term. The findings will contribute to evaluating the safety and efficacy of FMT and enhance our understanding of gut–brain interactions. Full article

The 2020 southern Puerto Rico earthquake sequence highlighted the severe seismic vulnerability of informally constructed two-story reinforced concrete (RC) houses. This study examines the failure mechanisms of these structures and assesses the effectiveness of first-floor RC shear-wall retrofitting. Nonlinear pushover and dynamic time–history analyses were performed using fiber-based distributed plasticity models for RC frames and nonlinear macro-elements for second-floor masonry infills, which introduced a significant inter-story stiffness imbalance. A bi-directional seismic input was applied using spectrally matched, near-fault pulse-like ground motions. The findings for the as-built structures showed that stiffness mismatches between stories, along with substantial strength and stiffness differences between orthogonal axes, resulted in concentrated plastic deformations and displacement-driven failures in the first story—consistent with damage observed during the 2020 earthquakes. Retrofitting the first floor with RC shear walls notably improved the performance, doubling the lateral load capacity and enhancing the overall stiffness. However, the retrofitted structures still exhibited a concentration of inelastic action—albeit with lower demands—shifted to the second floor, indicating potential for further optimization. Endoscopic Ultrasound-Guided Drainage for Post-Pancreatitis and Post-Surgical Peripancreatic Collections: A Retrospective Evaluation of Outcomes and Predictors of Success

Background: Peripancreatic collections (PPCs) are a frequent and severe complication of acute and chronic pancreatitis, as well as pancreatic surgery, often requiring interventions to treat and prevent infection, gastric obstruction, and other complications. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided drainage has emerged as a minimally invasive alternative to surgical and percutaneous approaches, offering reduced morbidity and shorter recovery times. However, the effectiveness of EUS-guided drainage in post-surgical PPCs remains underexplored. Methods: This retrospective, single-center study evaluated the technical and clinical outcomes of EUS-guided drainage in patients with PPCs between October 2021 and December 2024. Patients were categorized as having post-pancreatitis or post-surgical PPCs. Technical success, clinical success, complications, recurrence rates, and the need for reintervention were assessed. Results: A total of 50 patients underwent EUS-guided drainage, including 42 (84%) with post-pancreatitis PPCs and 8 (16%) with post-surgical PPCs. The overall technical success rate was 100%, with clinical success achieved in 96% of cases. Lumen-apposing metal stents (LAMSs) were used in 84% of patients, including 7.1% as a dual-gate salvage strategy after the failure of double-pigtail drainage. The complication rate was 24%, with infection being the most common (16%). The recurrence rate was 25%, with no significant difference between post-pancreatitis and post-surgical cases. Patients with walled-off necrosis had a significantly higher reintervention rate (35%) than those with pseudocysts (18%; p = 0.042). Conclusions: EUS-guided drainage is a highly effective and safe intervention for PPCs, including complex post-surgical cases. The 100% technical success rate reinforces its reliability, even in anatomically altered post-surgical collections. While recurrence rates remain a consideration, EUS-guided drainage offers a minimally invasive alternative to surgery, with comparable outcomes in both post-pancreatitis and post-surgical patients. Future multi-center studies should focus on optimizing treatment strategies and reducing recurrence in high-risk populations. Full article

Prediction Analysis of Integrative Quality Zones for Corydalis yanhusuo W. T. Wang Under Climate Change: A Rare Medicinal Plant Endemic to China

Corydalis yanhusuo W. T. Wang, commonly known as Yanhusuo, is an important and rare medicinal plant resource in China. Its habitat integrity is facing severe challenges due to climate change and human activities. Establishing an integrative quality zoning system for this species is of significant practical importance for resource conservation and adaptive management. This study integrates multiple data sources, including 121 valid distribution points, 37 environmental factors, future climate scenarios (SSP126 and SSP585 pathways for the 2050s and 2090s), and measured content of tetrahydropalmatine (THP) from 22 sampling sites. A predictive framework for habitat suitability and spatial distribution of effective components was constructed using a multi-model coupling approach (MaxEnt, ArcGIS spatial analysis, and co-kriging method). The results indicate that the MaxEnt model exhibits high prediction accuracy (AUC > 0.9), with the dominant environmental factors being the precipitation of the wettest quarter (404.8~654.5 mm) and the annual average temperature (11.8~17.4 °C). Under current climatic conditions, areas of high suitability are concentrated in parts of Central and Eastern China, including the Sichuan Basin, the middle–lower Yangtze plains, and coastal areas of Shandong and Liaoning. In future climate scenarios, the center of suitable areas is predicted to shift northwestward. The content of THP is significantly correlated with the mean diurnal temperature range, temperature seasonality, and the mean temperature of the wettest quarter (p < 0.01). A comprehensive assessment identifies the Yangtze River Delta region, Central China, and parts of the Loess Plateau as the optimal integrative quality zones. This research provides a scientific basis and decision-making support for the sustainable utilization of C. yanhusuo and other rare medicinal plants in China. Full article

The depletion of water resources caused by climate change and human activities is a pressing global issue. Lake Ereen is one of the ten natural landmarks of the Gobi-Altai of western Mongolia is included in the list of “important areas for birds” recognized by the international organization Birdlife. However, the construction of the Taishir Hydroelectric Power Station, aimed at supplying electricity to the western provinces of Mongolia, had a detrimental effect on the flow of the Zavkhan River, resulting in a drying-up and pollution of Lake Ereen, which relies on the river as its water source. This study assesses the pollution levels in Ereen Lake and determines the feasibility of its rehabilitation by redirecting the flow of the Zavkhan River. Field studies included the analysis of water quality, sediment contamination, and the composition of flora. The results show that the concentrations of ammonium, chlorine, fluorine, and sulfate in the lake water exceed the permissible levels set by the Mongolian standard. Analyses of elements from sediments revealed elevated levels of arsenic, chromium, and copper, exceeding international sediment quality guidelines and posing risks to biological organisms. Furthermore, several species of diatoms indicative of polluted water were discovered. Lake Ereen is currently in a eutrophic state and, based on a water quality index (WQI) of 49.4, also in a “polluted” state. Mass balance calculations and box model analysis determined the period of pollutant replacement for two restoration options: drying-up and complete removal of contaminated sediments and plants vs. dilution-flushing without direct interventions in the lake. We recommend the latter being the most efficient, eco-friendly, and cost-effective approach to rehabilitate Lake Ereen. Full article

Wild edible fruit plants are integral to the cultural, nutritional, medicinal, and economic practices of Indigenous Isan communities in Roi Et Province, northeastern Thailand, a region characterized by plateau and lowland topography and a tropical monsoon climate. This study aimed to document the diversity, traditional uses, phenology, and conservation status of these species to inform sustainable management and conservation efforts. Field surveys and ethnobotanical interviews with 200 informants (100 men, 100 women; random ages) were conducted across 20 local communities to identify species diversity and usage patterns, while phenological observations and conservation assessments were performed to understand reproductive cycles and species vulnerability between January and December 2023. A total of 68 species from 32 families were recorded, with peak flowering in March–April and fruiting in May–June. Analyses of Species Use Value (0.19–0.48) and Relative Frequency of Citation (0.15–0.44) identified key species with significant roles in food security and traditional medicine. Uvaria rufa had the highest SUV (0.48) and RFC (0.44). Informant consensus on medicinal applications was strong for ailments such as gastrointestinal and lymphatic disorders. Economically important species were also identified, with some contributing notable income through local trade. Conservation proposed one species as Critically Endangered and several others as Vulnerable. The results highlight the need for integrated conservation strategies, including community-based initiatives and recognition of Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs), to ensure the preservation of biodiversity, traditional knowledge, and local livelihoods. Several chronic inflammatory processes are currently being studied in relation to other systems to better understand the regulation mechanisms and identify potential therapeutic targets. A significant body of evidence supports the role of the nervous system in regulating various immunological processes. This study investigates the relationship between pterygia and the sympathetic nervous system, focusing on their interaction in the inflammatory response and fibrogenic process. Sixteen surgical specimens of primary pterygia and four conjunctival tissue samples were examined, and their morphology was analyzed using hematoxylin–eosin and Masson’s trichrome stains. The gene expression of adrenergic receptors, as well as inflammatory and fibrogenic cytokines, was also assessed. Additionally, both adrenergic receptors and tyrosine hydroxylase were found to be localized within the tissues according to immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence techniques. Increased expression of proinflammatory, fibrogenic, and adrenergic genes was observed in the pterygium compared to the healthy conjunctiva. Adrenergic receptors and tyrosine hydroxylase were localized in the basal region of the epithelium and within blood vessels, closely associated with immune cells. Neuroimmunomodulation plays a key role in the pathogenesis of pterygia by activating the sympathetic nervous system. At the intravascular level, norepinephrine promotes the migration of immune cells, thereby sustaining inflammation. Additionally, sympathetic nerve fibers located at the subepithelial level contribute to epithelial growth and the fibrosis associated with pterygia. Full article

Effects of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy-Based Educational Intervention Addressing Fine Particulate Matter Exposure on the Mental Health of Elementary School Children

Objectives: This study assessed the effectiveness of a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)-based fine dust education program, grounded in the Health Belief Model (HBM), on elementary students’ fine dust knowledge, related behaviors, and mental health (depression, anxiety, stress, sleep quality). Methods: From September to November 2024, 95 students (grades 4–6) living near a coal-fired power plant in midwestern South Korea were assigned to either an intervention group (n = 44) or a control group (n = 51). The intervention group completed a three-session CBT-based education program; the control group received stress management education. Assessments were conducted at weeks 1, 2, 4, and 8 using standardized mental health and behavior scales (PHQ: Patient Health Questionnaire, GAD: Generalized Anxiety Disorder Assessment, PSS: Perceived Stress Scale, ISI: Insomnia Severity Index). Results: A chi-square test was conducted to compare pre- and post-test changes in knowledge and behavior related to PM2.5. The intervention group showed significant improvements in seven fine dust-related knowledge and behavior items (e.g., PM2.5 awareness rose from 33.3% to 75.0%; p < 0.05). The control group showed limited gains. Regarding mental health, based on a mixed-design ANCOVA, anxiety scores significantly declined over time in the intervention group, with group and interaction effects also significant (p < 0.05). Depression scores showed time effects, but group and interaction effects were not significant. No significant changes were observed for stress, sleep, or group × PM2.5 interactions. Conclusions: The CBT-based education program effectively enhanced fine dust knowledge, health behaviors, and reduced anxiety among students. It presents a promising, evidence-based strategy to promote environmental and mental health in school-aged children. Full article

CPAP Use and Retinal Disease Risk in Obstructive Apnea: A Cohort Study

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common condition associated with intermittent hypoxia, systemic inflammation, and vascular dysfunction; mechanisms implicated in retinal disease pathogenesis. This real-world retrospective cohort study used data from the TriNetX Research Network to assess whether continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy reduces retinal disease incidence among adults with OSA and BMI between 25.0 and 30.0 kg/m2. After 1:1 propensity score matching, 101,754 patients were included in the analysis. Retinal outcomes included diabetic retinopathy (DR), age-related macular degeneration (AMD), retinal vein occlusion (RVO), and central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). CPAP use was associated with a modest but statistically significant reduction in DR (3.2% vs. 3.4%, RR: 0.922, p = 0.016) and AMD (2.1% vs. 2.3%, RR: 0.906, p = 0.018), while no significant differences were found for RVO or CSC. These findings support prior evidence linking CPAP to improved retinal microvascular health and suggest a protective effect against specific retinal complications. Limitations include a lack of data on CPAP adherence, OSA severity, and imaging confirmation. Still, this study highlights the importance of interdisciplinary care between sleep and eye health, and the need for further prospective studies to validate CPAP’s role in preventing retinal disease progression in OSA patients. The objective of this work is to evaluate how spent catalyst from fluid catalytic cracking (SCFCC) affects the physical, mechanical and durability properties of fly ash (FA) and blast furnace slag (BFS)-based alkali-activated materials (AAMs). Recycling of SCFCC by integrating it in a AAM matrix offers several advantages: valorization of the material, reducing its disposal in landfills and the landfill cost, and minimizing the environmental impact. Mineralogical, physical and mechanical characterization were carried out. The durability of the specimens was studied by performing acid attack and thermal stability tests. Mass variation, compressive strength and porosity parameters were determined to assess the durability. BFS- and FA-based AAMs have a different chemical composition, which contribute to variations in microstructure and physical and mechanical properties. Acid neutralization capacity was also determined to analyse the acid attack results. Porosity, including the pore size distribution, and the acid neutralization capacity are crucial in explaining the resistance of the AAMs to sulfuric acid attack and thermal degradation. Herein, a novel route was explored, the use of SCFCC to enhance the durability of AAMs under harsh operating conditions since results show that the compositions containing SCFCC showed lower strength decay due to the lower macroporosity proportions in these compositions.
