Measuring the service levels and spatial equity of urban parks constitutes a core research topic within the field of environmental justice. Against the backdrop of low-carbon urban transformation and sustainable development, this study constructs an ecological supply indicator calculation model for parks based on landscape ecology theory. Leveraging spatio-temporal big data such as Points of Interest (POI) and second-hand property transactions, it establishes a demand evaluation indicator system centered on human activity intensity. The study employs the Gini coefficient and location entropy to gauge the spatial equity of park supply–demand balance, utilizing the Z-score method to classify supply–demand matching types. An empirical case study is conducted in Shenzhen. Findings indicate that despite Shenzhen possessing abundant global-scale park resources, a Gini coefficient of 0.489 reveals significant deficiencies in the equitable provision of park services, with spatial distribution exhibiting pronounced social stratification. Specifically: (1) location entropy values exhibit an east-high, west-low spatial pattern; (2) areas with high location entropy are predominantly concentrated in Dapeng New District, rich in green space resources, where supply exceeds demand, creating an imbalance; and (3) areas with low locational entropy values are predominantly distributed in industrial clusters such as western Bao’an and western Longgang, exhibiting contradictory characteristics of low supply and high demand. Overall, the distribution of park and green space resources exhibits a polarized pattern. Full article

As artificial intelligence (AI) changes educational practices, understanding what sustains pre-service teachers’ generative AI use beyond initial adoption becomes important. However, existing research mainly focuses on initial acceptance rather than continuance intention, which is a more realistic indicator for sustainable technology integration. This study drew on an integrated framework including psychological (GAI anxiety, GAI self-efficacy), contextual (facilitating conditions, social influence), and perceptual factors (perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness) to examine pre-service teachers’ continuance intention toward GAI in future teaching. Survey data from 549 Chinese pre-service teachers were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA). Results showed that GAI self-efficacy had the strongest positive associations with both perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness. GAI anxiety negatively influenced both perceptions. However, facilitating conditions did not significantly relate to perceived usefulness. The fsQCA identified six configurational pathways clustered into the following three patterns: intrinsic value driven, efficacy capability driven, and external support driven. These findings suggest that teacher education programs should prioritize building GAI self-efficacy and supportive peer environments and not focus solely on infrastructure provision. Full article

Early childhood intervention and education play a central role in promoting equity, developmental outcomes, and long-term well-being for all children, particularly those experiencing those with disabilities or refugee status. In Türkiye, children at this intersection face compounded barriers to inclusive early childhood education (ECE). This paper examines how disability, and forced migration intersect to shape access to early childhood services in Türkiye, analyzing legal frameworks, programs, implementation gaps, and contextual factors. A review of policy documents, research, and program evaluations, reveals that while Türkiye has established foundational policies and achieved progress, structural barriers and governance fragmentation limit equitable service provision. The study adopts an intersectional framework and Guralnick’s Developmental Systems Model to identify leverage points for reform. The findings underscore the critical need for integrated service systems, strengthened cross-sectoral coordination, and targeted support mechanisms for families experiencing intersecting vulnerabilities in Türkiye, a country that ranks among the top five hosts of the world’s largest refugee populations. Background: Parents of school-age children with neurodevelopmental and conduct difficulties face elevated stress, reduced self-efficacy and relational strain, yet evidence for scalable, school-embedded support remains limited. Drawing on mentalization theory—which emphasises parents’ capacity to understand behaviour in terms of underlying mental states—this mixed-methods study evaluated a weekly parent learning group integrating psychoeducation, mentalization-based practice and peer support, delivered within an alternative provision school. Methods: A group of twelve parents who attended at least six sessions completed retrospective pretest–posttest questionnaires assessing parental reflective functioning (PRFQ) and parenting self-efficacy (PSOC). Semi-structured interviews explored parents’ subjective experiences and perceived changes in parent–child interactions and parent–school relationships. Quantitative outcomes were analysed using paired t-tests and effect sizes; qualitative data underwent reflexive thematic analysis. Results: Quantitative analyses revealed statistically significant improvements in parental reflective functioning and self-efficacy. Pre-mentalizing scores decreased substantially (d = 1.34), indicating reductions in non-mentalizing, while interest and curiosity about children’s mental states increased markedly (d = 1.83). Parenting self-efficacy improved significantly (d = 1.61). Although a reduction in excessive certainty about mental states approached significance (d = 0.63, p = 0.053), trends suggested greater epistemic balance. Qualitative analysis identified six themes elucidating mechanisms of change, including enhanced mentalizing capacity, reduced parental stress, transformed parent–child interactions and facilitation style as a critical active ingredient. Integration of findings suggests that psychoeducational content provided conceptual grounding for understanding behaviour, facilitator modelling scaffolded reflective practice, and relational safety within the group enabled authentic engagement with challenging experiences. Conclusions: These preliminary findings indicate that a school-based parent learning group combining psychoeducation, mentalization-based practice and peer support is feasible and associated with meaningful improvements in parental reflective functioning and self-efficacy. Parent narratives of transformed relational practices and shifts from reactive to reflective engagement echo broader literature demonstrating that group-delivered mentalization-oriented programmes can enhance reflective capacities and caregiving quality in diverse family contexts. The school setting may extend the reach of such interventions to families not engaged with clinical services and support collaborative parent–school partnerships. Future research should employ larger, controlled designs, incorporate observational and child outcome measures, and explore scalability across educational contexts. Full article

This study systematically analyzes the spatio-temporal evolution, trade-offs, synergies and driving mechanisms of five ecosystem services (ESs) in Fujian Province (carbon storage, CS; habitat quality, HQ; sediment delivery ratio, SDR; water yield, WY; food provision, FP) based on multi-source data from 2003, 2013 and 2023 by adopting the InVEST model, Spearman correlation analysis, geographically weighted regression (GWR), self-organizing maps (SOM) and geographic detectors. Results show that: (1) ESs present a spatial pattern of “high in northwest and low in southeast” in Fujian; CS, HQ and FP show an overall decline, while SDR and WY increase significantly. (2) ES trade-offs and synergies have obvious scale effects and spatial heterogeneity, with stronger relationship intensity at the county level than the grid level, and FP generally shows a trade-off relationship with other services. (3) Land use is the key driving factor for CS, FP and HQ; precipitation dominates the changes in WY and SDR; and dual-factor interactions generally enhance the explanatory power of ES changes. The findings enrich the theoretical system of multi-scale ES trade-off and synergy research under rapid urbanization and provide a scientific basis for sustainable territorial spatial planning and differentiated ecological governance in Fujian. Meanwhile, the research framework can serve as a reference for ES management in other coastal mountainous regions worldwide, contributing to the realization of regional sustainable development goals (SDGs). Agricultural biomass recycling efficiency is central to advancing the green and sustainable transition of agriculture. Drawing on panel data for 30 Chinese provinces from 2019 to 2023, this study measures recycling efficiency using a three-stage super-efficiency SBM model with undesirable output and examines its determinants with a panel Tobit model. The second-stage SFA indicates that the effects of external conditions on input slacks are input-specific. In particular, GDP is statistically significant only in the biomass-generation slack equation, whereas topographic relief and rural road network density do not show robust associations with any slack measure once controls are included. After removing the influence of environmental factors and random shocks, the overall national level of agricultural biomass recycling efficiency remains moderate. The national mean Stage 3 efficiency decreased from 0.586 in 2019 to 0.427 in 2022 and recovered to 0.543 in 2023. The five-year average was 0.510, which is close to the Stage 1 average of 0.503. Spatial analysis indicates weak global spatial autocorrelation, with only occasional local clustering. The efficiency centroid oscillated during the study period rather than following a one-way migration path, with a total displacement of 70.05 km. The determinant analysis indicates that the number of specialised agricultural machinery has the most stable positive association with recycling efficiency, while other policy, market, and human capital variables do not show robust significance in the short panel. These findings underline the need to align equipment deployment and collection systems with local terrain and transport conditions, expand machinery leasing and service provision, and strengthen capacity building in low-efficiency regions. Establishing a national information sharing and dispatch platform would facilitate cross-regional resource flows and more efficient allocation, while improving local service outlets would make participation more convenient for farmers and reduce transaction costs. Microplastic pollution has become widespread in aquatic ecosystems worldwide; however, its consequences for ecosystem service provision and fisheries’ long-term sustainability remain poorly integrated across scientific disciplines. While previous reviews have primarily focused on sources, distribution patterns, and toxicological responses, this review advances the field by synthesizing existing evidence through an ecosystem-service framework. Specifically, it integrates organism-level biological responses with population dynamics and fishery productivity to evaluate how microplastic exposure may influence provisioning, regulating, and supporting services. It also critically provides patterns of sublethal effects, trophic transfer dynamics, and interactions with co-stressors. Particular attention is given to the challenge of scaling from physiological responses to measurable impacts on biomass production, recruitment stability, and habitat functionality. To clarify these linkages, the review provides a structured synthesis of service pathways connecting microplastic exposure to fishery-relevant outcomes and highlights priority research gaps necessary for quantitative risk assessment. In conclusion, advancing sustainability assessments requires long-term, field-based integration of ecotoxicology, population modeling, and ecosystem process metrics. By reframing microplastic pollution within a service-delivery context, this review offers a focused analytical foundation for evaluating its significance to sustainable fisheries and aquatic resource governance. Urban sprawl promotes significant changes in land use and occupation by interfering with the dynamics of functional ecosystems. Among other things, it encourages forest fragmentation, the degradation of woodland edges, and altered habitat integrity. This study aims to propose a simplified and low-cost methodological framework that integrates open data and open-source tools to monitor the potential of ecosystem services (ESs) at the municipal scale. Guided by the hypothesis that rapid suburbanization leads to measurable declines in ecological integrity, the InVEST Habitat Quality model was used as a proxy to analyze the landscape’s capacity to support ES. The procedure included data acquisition and organization, land use reclassification, and scores for the threats and sensitivities, implemented through the InVEST software 3.14.2. Results indicated that urban areas more than doubled between 1985 and 2005, while habitat quality scores declined across Campinas, reflecting a decrease in the potential for ES provision. Urban expansion, mainly concentrated in the central region, occurred at the expense of agricultural and pasture areas. Forest remnants, which currently occupy only 8.5% of the municipal territory, are small and fragmented, intensifying edge effects and reducing the potential capacity to provide regulatory ES. Fragmentation and adjacent land use changes limit these habitats’ capacity to provide ES. The proposed methodology demonstrates the potential for simple and reproducible monitoring of ecosystem services at the municipal scale, providing support to local governments with limited financial and technical capacity in geospatial data processing. This framework enables municipalities to incorporate environmental indicators into planning tools, offering a scalable approach for monitoring ecosystem dynamics in urbanized regions. Full article

As network slicing gains traction in cloud computing environments, efficient management and orchestration systems are required to realize the benefits of this technology. These systems must enable dynamic provisioning and resource optimization of virtualized services spanning multiple network slices. Nevertheless, the common resource overprovisioning practice implemented by service providers leads to the inefficient use of resources, limiting the ability of Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to rent new network slices to more vertical customers. Hence, efficient resource allocation mechanisms are essential to achieve optimal network performance and cost-effectiveness. This paper proposes a predictive model for network slice resource optimization based on resource sharing between Virtualized Network Functions (VNFs). The model employs deep learning models based on Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and Transformers for CPU resource usage prediction and a reactive algorithm for resource sharing between VNFs. The model is powered by a telemetry system proposed as an extension of the 3GPP network slice management architectural framework. The extended architectural framework enhances the automation and optimization of the network slice lifecycle management. The model is validated through a practical use case, demonstrating the effectiveness of the resource sharing algorithm in preventing VNF overload and predicting resource usage accurately. The findings demonstrate that the sharing mechanism enhances resource optimization and ensures compliance with service level agreements, mitigating service degradation. This work contributes to the efficient management and utilization of network resources in 5G networks and provides a basis for further research in network slice resource optimization. Full article

Land use and land cover change (LULCC) constitutes a major challenge to sustainability worldwide. This also applies to Japan, where urbanization in coastal lowlands is contrasted with widespread agricultural abandonment in rural landscapes. In this systematic review we synthesized the main LULCC trajectories, their driving forces, and specific effects in Japan from 1994 to 2024. Following PRISMA guidelines, 158 peer-reviewed articles were analyzed using quantitative co-occurrence analyses, Chi-squared tests, and Sankey diagrams to map land-use flows. Two dominant and opposing trajectories were confirmed: urban expansion and agricultural abandonment. The most significant land transition flow involved the conversion of agricultural land to forests/natural vegetation, while the conversion of agricultural land to built-up areas came in second place. These transitions were primarily driven by economic and demographic factors, but reforestation trends were strongly influenced by policy and institutional factors (35.70%), reflecting national regreening initiatives. Ecological and biodiversity impacts of LULCC were the most often documented effects (>40% of records). While the published literature describes trends in land-use transformations, the mechanistic understanding of LULCC remains limited. There is an urgent need to move toward process-based predictive modeling that integrates socio-economic variables. Future policies should balance urban density management with the strategic use of rural abandonment for ecosystem services provision and climate mitigation. Full article

Species composition is an important indicator for the condition, functioning, and ecosystem service provision of salt marshes, making the mapping of species composition valuable for their management. Previous studies have demonstrated that the combined use of unoccupied aerial vehicle (UAV)-mounted multispectral cameras and machine learning (ML) can provide effective mapping of vegetation communities in these habitats. However, to date, these studies have predominantly focused on relatively species-poor salt marshes in North America. There has been no published testing of these combined UAV-ML methods in the salt marshes of northwestern Europe, which contain different often more diverse assemblages. Consequently, this study investigated whether applying recent methodological advances can accurately map National Vegetation Classification communities in three locations in the United Kingdom, each comprising two salt marsh sites, one established and one restored. Sites consisted of a mix of established and restored salt marshes of different ages, enabling a complementary assessment of how these methods perform in communities at different stages of development. The applied random forest ML models were found to produce highly accurate maps of salt marsh vegetation communities, with a mean overall accuracy of 94.7%. No relationship was found between the age of restoration sites and the accuracy of the classifications, showing these methods may be applied at a range of stages of community development and offer wider applicability for saltmarsh management and monitoring. The findings of this study demonstrate that advances in the combined use of drones and machine learning provide a readily transferrable method for mapping standardised vegetation communities in both established and restored northwestern European salt marshes and therefore likely other salt marshes globally. Consequently, this study demonstrates that both researchers and practitioners may confidently use these methods to create improved assessments of both marsh condition and function. Full article

The rapid convergence of the Internet of Things (IoT) and decentralized finance (DeFi) is reshaping the digital economy by enabling autonomous, trustless, and value-driven interactions among connected devices. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of the emerging paradigm that combines IoT’s pervasive sensing and communication capabilities with DeFi’s programmable financial infrastructure. We first discuss the motivation behind this convergence and explore key opportunities, including autonomous machine-to-machine (M2M) payments, decentralized data marketplaces, and trustless IoT service provisioning. Despite its potential, IoT–DeFi integration introduces significant security and privacy challenges related to smart contract vulnerabilities, consensus protocol risks, oracle manipulation, and constrained device capabilities. We review existing mitigation approaches such as lightweight cryptography, secure contract design, and decentralized identity management, and critically assess their limitations in heterogeneous, resource-limited environments. Building on this analysis, identify research gaps and propose future directions emphasizing formal verification of IoT-integrated smart contracts, robust oracle design, interoperability frameworks, and privacy-preserving trust models. This survey systematically maps opportunities, threats, and open issues. In doing so, it guides researchers and practitioners toward building secure, scalable, and energy-efficient IoT–DeFi ecosystems for next-generation decentralized applications. Full article

Thermal Energy Storage in Renewable Energy Communities: A State-of-the-Art Review

Renewable Energy Communities (RECs) are recognized as effective collective models to accelerate decarbonization through shared renewable generation, consumption, and local flexibility provision. However, their large-scale deployment remains constrained by the temporal mismatch between variable renewable generation and strongly time-dependent demand, particularly in buildings where heating and cooling dominate final energy use. This state-of-the-art review provides an integrated and comparative assessment of Thermal Energy Storage (TES) and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) within RECs, with explicit focus on power-to-heat (PtH) pathways and phase change material (PCM)-based cooling storage. Based on a structured analysis of the peer-reviewed literature published between 2015 and 2025, the review shows that TES represents a cost-effective and durable complement to electrochemical storage in heating- and cooling-dominated communities. Reported results indicate that TES integration can reduce peak electrical demand by 20–35%, increase local renewable self-consumption by 15–40%, and significantly lower required battery capacity in hybrid configurations. While BESS remains indispensable for short-term electrical balancing and fast-response grid services, TES offers lower costs per kWh stored, longer operational lifetimes (often exceeding 25–40 years), and lower lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions, typically 70–85% lower than those of BESS when thermal energy is used directly. Among TES technologies, PCM-based systems demonstrate particular effectiveness in cooling-dominated RECs, enabling peak cooling power reductions of up to 30% through diurnal load shifting. Across climatic contexts, the literature converges on hybrid TES–BESS architectures as the most robust storage solution, with reported reductions in grid imports and renewable curtailment of up to 35–40%. In addition, TES uniquely enables seasonal energy shifting, for which no cost-competitive electrochemical alternative currently exists. Despite these advantages, the review identifies persistent gaps related to the limited availability of long-term operational data and the need for empirical validation of hybrid control strategies. Future research should prioritize multi-year field demonstrations, advanced data-driven energy management, and policy frameworks that explicitly recognize thermal flexibility and sector coupling within Renewable Energy Communities. Due to environmental challenges, the global luxury hospitality industry faces increasing pressure to reduce its consumption of natural resources while maintaining service quality. In this paper a conceptual study is conducted to identify three primary problems of the tourism industry and highlight their impact on sustainable water resources and ecosystems: excessive water, electricity and towel/linen consumption in luxury hotels and resorts. This paper proposes a solution that uses a digital smart meter system linked to guest rooms. It is activated upon check-in, and guest participation is optional. It uses tangible or intangible incentives—such as discounts upon departure for future stays or for hotel laundry/meals/beverages—that rationalize consumption without affecting the quality of basic services. This approach may be implemented either independently by a single hotel or collaboratively through strategic alliances among multiple hotels, thus enabling customers to redeem their incentives/credits at any participating property. Guests are grouped into three consumption levels: high-saving guests (high incentives), average-saving guests (average incentives) and third-level guests (low/below-average incentives). Adopting this approach helps luxury hotels/resorts reduce their operational costs and enhance their image by applying green marketing in practice. Moreover, this conceptual paper proposes the provision of badges, including international environmental certifications, to hotels that adopt this responsible approach. Redefining Policy Effectiveness in the Digital Era: From Corporate Scaling to Inclusive Employment Growth—Evidence from China’s National Cultural Demonstration Zones

Public cultural services are traditionally viewed as welfare provisions. However, this perspective overlooks their productive externalities as critical social infrastructure. This study treats China’s National Public Cultural Service System Demonstration Zone program as a quasi-natural experiment to examine its economic performance. The analysis utilizes panel data from 280 prefecture-level cities between 2008 and 2021 and employs a multi-period difference-in-differences model. Results show that the policy successfully increased employment in the cultural sector. This was achieved by enabling flexible labor opportunities through digital platforms and government procurement, rather than through significant growth in formal enterprises. We term this structural divergence De-organized Growth. Mechanism analysis confirms that Fiscal-Digital Synergy drives this phenomenon. Effective collaboration between government funding and digital technology activates cultural consumption on the demand side and facilitates disintermediation on the supply side. Crucially, we identify a nonlinear Digital Exclusion Trap. In this trap, fiscal support is ineffective or even counterproductive in regions falling below a critical digital infrastructure threshold. The findings suggest that the equalized provision of public culture serves as a productive input for achieving UN Sustainable Development Goal 8 regarding decent work. We advocate for a shift in governance paradigms from traditional administration to a strategic purchaser role. This role leverages digital platforms to foster a more inclusive labor market.
