Recent Advances of Hybrid Nanogenerators for Sustainable Ocean Energy Harvesting: Performance, Applications, and Challenges

Ocean energy is an abundant, eco-friendly, and renewable energy resource that is useful for powering sensor networks connected to the maritime Internet of Things (MIoT). These sensor networks can be used to measure different marine environmental parameters that affect ocean infrastructure integrity and harm marine ecosystems. This ocean energy can be harnessed through hybrid nanogenerators that combine triboelectric nanogenerators, electromagnetic generators, piezoelectric nanogenerators, and pyroelectric generators. These nanogenerators have advantages such as high-power density, robust design, easy operating principle, and cost-effective fabrication. However, the performance of these nanogenerators can be affected by the wear of their main components, reduction of wave frequency and amplitude, extreme corrosion, and sea storms. To address these challenges, future research on hybrid nanogenerators must improve their mechanical strength, including materials and packages with anti-corrosion coatings. Herein, we present recent advances in the performance of different hybrid nanogenerators to harvest ocean energy, including various transduction mechanisms. Furthermore, this review reports potential applications of hybrid nanogenerators to power devices in marine infrastructure or serve as self-powered MIoT monitoring sensor networks. This review discusses key challenges that must be addressed to achieve the commercial success of these nanogenerators, regarding design strategies with advanced simulation models or digital twins. Also, these strategies must incorporate new materials that improve the performance, reliability, and integration of future nanogenerator array systems. Thus, optimized hybrid nanogenerators can represent a promising technology for ocean energy harvesting with application in the maritime industry. Full article

Underwater towed systems (UTSs) are widely used in underwater exploration and oceanographic data acquisition. However, the heave motion information of the towing ship is usually affected by the measurement transmitting delay, sensor noise and surface waves, which will result in uncontrolled depth variation of the towed vehicle, so as to adversely affect the monitoring performance and mechanical robustness of the UTS. To resolve this problem, a heave motion prediction approach based on sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) incorporated with empirical mode decomposition (EMD) for the UTS is proposed in this paper. With the proposed approach, a heave motion model of the towing ship with random waves is firstly developed based on strip theory. Meanwhile, the EMD is employed to eliminate the high-frequency noise of the measurement data to restore low-frequency towing ship motion. And then, the SBL is utilized to train the weight parameters in the built model to predict the heave motion, which not only reconstruct the heave motion from non-stationary sensor signals with noise but also prevent overfitting. Furthermore, the depth compensation of the towed vehicle is then performed using the predicted heave motion. Finally, experimental results demonstrate that the proposed EMD-SBL method significantly improves both the prediction accuracy and model adaptability under various sea conditions, and it also guarantees that the maximum prediction depth error of the heave motion does not exceed 1 cm. Ship seismic wave signals represent one of the most critical physical field characteristics of vessels. To achieve the high-precision detection of ship seismic wave field signals in marine environments, an underwater seismic wave signal detection system was designed. The system adopts a three-stage architecture consisting of watertight instrument housing, a communication circuit, and a buoy to realize high-capacity real-time data transmissions. The host computer performs the collaborative optimization of multi-modal hardware architecture and adaptive signal processing algorithms, enabling the detection of ship targets in oceanic environments. Through verification in a water tank and sea trials, the system successfully measured seismic wave signals. An improved ALE-LOFAR (Adaptive Line Enhancer–Low-Frequency Analysis) joint framework, combined with DEMON (Demodulation of Envelope Modulation) demodulation technology, was proposed to conduct the spectral feature analysis of ship seismic wave signals, yielding the low-frequency signal characteristics of vessels. This scheme provides an important method for the covert monitoring of shallow-sea targets, providing early warnings of illegal fishing and ensuring underwater security. Full article

The Advanced Topographic Laser Altimeter System (ATLAS) on the Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) employs a photon-counting detection mode with a 532 nm laser to obtain high-precision Earth surface elevation data and offers a new remote sensing method for nearshore bathymetry. The key issues in using ATLAS ATL03 data for bathymetry are achieving automatic and accurate extraction of signal photons in different water environments. Especially for areas with sharply fluctuating topography, the interaction of various impacts, such as topographic fluctuations, sea waves, and laser pulse direction, can result in a sharp change in photon density and distribution at the seafloor, which can cause the signal photon detection at the seafloor to be misinterpreted or omitted during analysis. Therefore, an improved size and direction adaptive filtering (ISDAF) method was proposed for nearshore bathymetry using ATLAS ATL03 data. This method can accurately distinguish between the original photons located above the sea surface, on the sea surface, and the seafloor. The size and direction of the elliptical density filter kernel automatically adapt to the sharp fluctuations in topography and changes in water depth, ensuring precise extraction of signal photons from both the sea surface and the seafloor. To evaluate the precision and reliability of the ISDAF, ATLAS ATL03 data from different water environments and seafloor terrains were used to perform bathymetric experiments. Airborne LiDAR bathymetry (ALB) data were also used to validate the bathymetric accuracy and reliability. The experimental findings show that the ISDAF consistently exhibits effectiveness in detecting and retrieving signal photons, regardless of whether the seafloor terrain is stable or dynamic. After applying refraction correction, the high accuracy of bathymetry was evidenced by a strong coefficient of determination (R2) and a low root mean square error (RMSE) between the ICESat-2 bathymetry data and ALB data. This research offers a promising approach to advancing remote sensing technologies for precise nearshore bathymetric mapping, with implications for coastal monitoring, marine ecology, and resource management. During prolonged deployment, deep-sea acoustic submerged buoys may undergo displacement and torsional deformation of their main floating body under turbulent flows, which degrades the quality of acquired sensor data and introduces vibration-induced noise that interferes with acoustic measurements. This paper presents a novel structural design for acoustic buoy main bodies based on hydrodynamic principles. We performed fluid-structure interaction (FSI) simulations to evaluate the dynamic response characteristics of the structure in deep-sea conditions, including computational analysis of velocity and pressure field distributions surrounding the buoy. Leveraging pressure data derived from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, we developed an innovative vibration noise quantification methodology. This approach employs plane wave excitation with equivalent pressure magnitude to simulate hydrodynamic loading effects while incorporating tripartite coupling mechanisms among fluid, structural, and acoustic domains. The simulated vibration noise profiles establish environmental baseline noise levels for onboard acoustic monitoring instruments, thereby enhancing measurement fidelity. Full article

Coastal and maritime regions and their entities face accelerated degradation due to the combined effects of environmental stressors and anthropogenic activities. Coastal degradation can be identified, visualized and estimated through periodic monitoring over a region of interest using earth observation, climate, meteorological, seasonal, waves, sea level rising, and other ocean- and maritime-related datasets. Usually, these datasets are provided through different sources, in different structures or data types; in many cases, a complete dataset can be large in size and needs some kind of preprocessing (information filtering) before use in the intended application. Recently, the term data cube introduced in the scientific community and frameworks like Google Earth Engine and Open Data Cubes have emerged as a solution to earth observation data harmonization, federation, and exchange framework; however, these sources either completely lack the ability to process climate, meteorological, waves, sea lever rising, etc., data from open sources, like CORDEX and WCRP, or preprocessing is required. This study describes and utilizes the Ocean-DC framework for modular earth observation and other data types to resolve major big data challenges. Compared to the already existing approaches, the Ocean-DC framework harmonizes several types of data and generates ready-to-use data cubes products, which can be merged together to produce high-dimensionality visualization products. To prove the efficiency of the Ocean-DC framework, a case study at Crete Island, emphasizing the Port of Heraklion, demonstrates the practical utility by revealing degradation trends via time-series analysis of several related remote sensing indices calculated using the Ocean-DC framework. The results show a significant reduction in processing time (up to 89%) compared to traditional remote sensing approaches and optimized data storage management, proving its value as a scalable solution for environmental resilience, highlighting its potential use in early warning systems and decision support systems for sustainable coastal infrastructure management. Bilateral teleoperation systems have been widely used in many fields of robotics, such as industrial manipulation, medical treatment, space exploration, and deep-sea operation. Delays in communication, known as an inevitable issues in practical implementation, especially for long-distance operations and challenging communication situations, can destroy system passivity and potentially lead to system failure. In this work, we address the time-delayed three-channel teleoperation design problem to guarantee system passivity and achieve high transparency simultaneously. To realize this, the three-channel teleoperation structure is first reformulated to form a two-channel-like architecture. Then, the wave variable technique is used to handle the communication delay and guarantee system passivity. Two novel wave variable compensators are proposed to achieve delay-minimized system transparency, and energy reservoirs are employed to monitor and regulate the energy introduced via these compensators to preserve overall system passivity. Numerical studies confirm that the proposed method significantly improves both kinematic and force tracking performance, achieving near-perfect correspondence with only a single-trip delay. Quantitative analyses using Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), and Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) metrics show substantial error reductions compared to conventional wave variable and direct transmission-based three-channel teleoperation approaches. Moreover, statistical validation via the Mann–Whitney U test further confirms the significance of these improvements in system performance. The proposed design guarantees passivity with any passive human operator and environment without requiring restrictive assumptions, offering a robust and generalizable solution for teleoperation tasks with communication time delay. The southern Baltic Sea is characterized by highly variable weather conditions, particularly in autumn and winter, when storms, strong westerly winds, and temporary sea ice formation disrupt maritime operations. This study presents a climatographic overview and evaluates key hydrometeorological factors that influence the safe and efficient use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as bunkering fuel in the region. The analysis draws on long-term meteorological and hydrological datasets (1971–2020), including satellite observations and in situ measurements. It identifies operational constraints, such as wind speed, wave height, visibility, and ice cover, and assesses their impact on LNG logistics and terminal functionality. Thresholds for safe operations are evaluated in accordance with IMO and ISO safety standards. An ice severity forecast for 2011–2030 was developed using the ECHAM5 global climate model under the A1B emission scenario, indicating potential seasonal risks to LNG operations. While baseline safety criteria are generally met, environmental variability in the region may still cause temporary disruptions. Findings underscore the need for resilient port infrastructure, including anti-icing systems, heated transfer equipment, and real-time environmental monitoring, to ensure operational continuity. Integrating weather forecasting into LNG logistics supports uninterrupted deliveries and contributes to EU goals for energy diversification and emissions reduction. The study concludes that strategic investments in LNG infrastructure—tailored to regional climatic conditions—can enhance energy security in the southern Baltic, provided environmental risks are systematically accounted for in operational planning. The remote sensing inversion of internal solitary waves (ISWs) enables the retrieval of ISW parameters and facilitates the analysis of their spatial variability. In this study, we utilize continuous optical imagery from the FY-4B satellite to extract real-time ISW propagation speeds throughout their evolution from generation to shoaling. ISW parameters are retrieved in the northern South China Sea based on the quantitative relationship between sea surface current divergence and ISW surface features in optical imagery. The inversion method employs a fully nonlinear equation with continuous stratification to account for the strongly nonlinear nature of ISWs and uses the propagation speed extracted from continuous imagery as a constraint to determine a unique solution. The results show that as ISWs propagate from deep to shallow waters in the northern South China Sea, their statistically averaged amplitude initially increases and then decreases, while their propagation speed continuously decreases with decreasing depth. The inversion results are consistent with previous in situ observations. Furthermore, a three-day consecutive remote sensing tracking analysis of the same ISW revealed that the spatial variation in its parameters aligned well with the abovementioned statistical results. The findings provide an effective inversion approach and supporting datasets for extensive ISW monitoring. Full article

Phytoplankton size classes (PSC), which categorize phytoplankton into pico- (<2 µm), nano- (2–20 µm), and microphytoplankton (>20 µm), have been widely used to describe functional group responses to environmental variability. Distribution of PSCs heavily influences marine ecosystems and biogeochemical processes. Despite the importance of PSC distributions, especially in the face of climate change, long-term studies on PSC variability and its driving factors are lacking. This study aimed to identify the key environmental drivers affecting summer PSC variability in the northern East China Sea (NECS) by analyzing 27 years (1998–2024) of satellite-derived data. Statistical analyses using random forest and multiple linear regression models revealed that euphotic depth (Zeu) and suspended particulate matter (SPM) were the primary factors influencing PSC variation; deeper Zeu values favored smaller picophytoplankton, whereas higher SPM concentrations supported larger PSCs. Long-term trend analysis showed a clear shift toward increasing picophytoplankton contributions (+2.4% per year), with corresponding declines in nano- and microphytoplankton levels (2.2% and 0.4% annually, respectively). These long-term changes are hypothesized to result from a persistent decline in SPM concentrations, which modulate light attenuation and nutrient dynamics in the euphotic zone. Marine heat waves intensify these shifts by promoting picophytoplankton dominance through enhanced stratification and reduced nutrient availability. These findings underscore the need for continuous monitoring to inform ecosystem management and predict the impacts of climate change in the NECS. Full article

Autonomous unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) offer transformative potential for collecting marine meteorological data under extreme weather conditions, yet their capability to provide reliable solar radiation measurements during typhoons remains underexplored. This study evaluates shortwave downward radiation (SWDR) data obtained by a solar-powered USV (developed by IAP/CAS, Beijing, China) that successfully traversed Typhoon Sinlaku (2020), compared with Himawari-8 satellite products. The SUSV acquired 1 min resolution SWDR measurements near the typhoon center, while satellite data were collocated spatially and temporally for validation. Results demonstrate that the USV maintained uninterrupted operation and power supply despite extreme sea states, enabling continuous radiation monitoring. After averaging, high-frequency SWDR data exhibited minimal bias relative to Himawari-8 to mitigate wave-induced attitude effects, with a mean bias error (MBE) of 13.64 W m−2 under cloudy typhoon conditions. The consistency between platforms confirms the SUSV’s capacity to deliver accurate in situ radiation data where traditional observations are scarce. This work establishes that autonomous SUSVs can critically supplement satellite validation and improve radiative transfer models in typhoon-affected oceans, addressing a key gap in severe weather oceanography. Wave energy converters (WECs) harness the untapped power of ocean waves to generate renewable energy, offering a promising solution to sustainable energy. An optimal WEC control strategy is essential to maximize power capture that dynamically adjusts system parameters in response to rapidly changing sea states. This study presents a novel control approach that leverages neural networks to estimate sea states from onboard WEC measurements such as position, velocity, and force. Using a point absorber WEC device as a test platform, our proposed approach estimates sea states in real-time and subsequently adjusts PID controller gains to maximize energy extraction. Simulation results across diverse sea conditions demonstrate that our strategy eliminates the need for external wave monitoring equipment while maintaining power capture efficiency. The results show that our neural network-based control technique can improve power capture by 25.6% while significantly reducing system complexity. This approach offers a practical alternative for WEC deployments where direct wave measurements are either infeasible or cost prohibitive. Full article

Bearing Capacity of Offshore Wind Power Suction Bucket with Supports Under Extreme Wind and Waves

In this study, we analyzed an offshore wind turbine suction bucket foundation with supports, referred to as the supported suction bucket foundation. A numerical model of a typical 3MW wind turbine suction bucket foundation was established, and the accuracy of the numerical modeling method was validated. The daily wind and wave extreme data for 2022 monitored by a station in the eastern China Sea were converted into loads and applied to the conventional and supported suction bucket foundations. The bearing capacity of the two bucket foundations was, thus, compared and analyzed. The results show that the supported suction bucket foundation reduces the foundation displacement and amplitude. Also, the support structure effectively reduces the soil displacement around the bucket. The maximum displacement of the outer soil of the bucket decreases by about 89.8%, while that of the inner soil of the bucket decreases by about 70.7%. Increasing the supports can reduce the separation of the top lid from the inner soil below it. Further, the supported suction bucket foundation can effectively reduce the plastic strain of the soil around the bucket and reduce the plastic strain difference between the inner and outer soil of the bucket. The need for real-time and scalable oceanographic monitoring has become crucial for coastal management, marine traffic control and environmental sustainability. This study investigates the integration of sensor technology into marine cables to enable real-time monitoring, focusing on tidal cycles and wave characteristics. A 2000 m cable demonstrator was deployed off the coast of Portugal, featuring three active repeater nodes equipped with pressure sensors at varying depths. The goal was to estimate hourly wave periods using fast Fourier transform and calculate significant wave height via a custom peak detection algorithm. The results showed strong coherence with tidal depth variations, with wave period estimates closely aligning with forecasts. The wave height estimations exhibited a clear relationship with tidal cycles, which demonstrates the system’s sensitivity to coastal hydrodynamics, a factor that numerical models designed for open waters often fail to capture. The study also highlights challenges in deep-water monitoring, such as signal attenuation and the need for high sampling rates. Overall, this research emphasises the scalability of sensor-integrated smart marine cables, offering a transformative opportunity to expand oceanographic monitoring capabilities. The findings open the door for future real-time ocean monitoring systems that can deliver valuable insights for coastal management, environmental monitoring and scientific research. Full article

The response of large temporary working platforms for cross-sea bridges under the action of strong wind and waves with large tidal ranges is one of the key issues in offshore engineering. Based on a grand offshore bridge project in Fujian Province of China, on-site monitoring tests were carried out on a temporary working platform. A high-precision and fully automatic monitoring system was adopted to conduct the all-weather and high-frequency monitoring on vibrations, responses, and sea conditions of the platform, enabling us to grasp its structural mechanical characteristic and ensuring the platform safety. The results show that, under the severe sea conditions of typhoons, the stress of the platform structure increases significantly with the increase in the tidal range and reaches its maximum value at the high tide level. The inclination angle changes violently at the high tide level, while the amplitude of inclination angle change is relatively small at the low tide level. The effective value of the platform displacement under the severe sea conditions of typhoon meteorology is much larger than that under normal sea conditions. Compared with the low tide level, the acceleration of the offshore temporary work platform changes more drastically at the high tide level under severe sea conditions. Under severe sea conditions, the tidal level has a significant impact on the frequency corresponding to the peak value of the acceleration power spectrum of the offshore temporary platform.
