Background/Objectives: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are chronic autoimmune conditions that impact the physical and psychological well-being of pediatric patients. While previous studies have shown a high prevalence of mental health challenges among youth with chronic conditions, the prevalence of mental health issues in Canadian pediatric patients with JIA and IBD remains unclear. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of documented mental health disorders and related medication use of youth with JIA or IBD at a tertiary care centre. Methods: We conducted a retrospective chart review of youths aged 12–17 diagnosed with JIA or IBD at McMaster Children’s Hospital (MCH) to understand the prevalence of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), separation anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder (SAD), obsessive–compulsive disorders (OCD), eating disorders, major depressive disorder (MDD), adolescent adjustment disorder, suicide attempt/suicide ideation, self-harm behaviour, substance use disorder, and attention deficit disorders (ADD). Results: We reviewed 429 patient charts, including 303 patients with IBD and 126 with JIA. Our findings identified 90 IBD patients and 20 JIA patients who had one or more documented mental health conditions. Proportionately, there was a higher prevalence of mental health conditions among IBD patients (30%) compared to JIA patients (16%). The most frequently observed conditions in both IBD and JIA patients were GAD (63%, 50%), ADD (33%, 35%), and MDD (29%, 15%). Conclusions: These findings highlight the critical need for early mental health screening and integrated care approaches that address both medical and psychosocial needs in adolescents with chronic illnesses. Future research should incorporate prospective study designs, include diverse geographic and demographic populations, and explore targeted interventions to improve mental and physical health outcomes in this vulnerable group. Football performance results from the dynamic interaction between physical, tactical, technical, and psychological dimensions—each of which also influences player well-being, recovery, and readiness. However, integrated monitoring approaches remain scarce, particularly in youth and sub-elite contexts. This systematic review screened 341 records from PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, with 46 studies meeting the inclusion criteria (n = 1763 players; age range: 13.2–28.7 years). Physical external load was reported in 44 studies using GPS-derived metrics such as total distance and high-speed running, while internal load was examined in 36 studies through session-RPE (rate of perceived exertion × duration), heart rate zones, training impulse (TRIMP), and Player Load (PL). A total of 22 studies included well-being indicators capturing fatigue, sleep quality, stress levels, and muscle soreness, through tools such as the Hooper Index (HI), the Total Quality Recovery (TQR) scale, and various Likert-type or composite wellness scores. Tactical behaviours (n = 15) were derived from positional tracking systems, while technical performance (n = 7) was assessed using metrics like pass accuracy and expected goals, typically obtained from Wyscout® or TRACAB® (a multi-camera optical tracking system). Only five studies employed multivariate models to examine interactions between performance domains or to predict well-being outcomes. Most remained observational, relying on descriptive analyses and examining each domain in isolation. These findings reveal a fragmented approach to player monitoring and a lack of conceptual integration between physical, psychological, tactical, and technical indicators. Future research should prioritise multidimensional, standardised monitoring frameworks that combine contextual, psychophysiological, and performance data to improve applied decision-making and support player health, particularly in sub-elite and youth populations. High Antenatal Psychosocial Risk Among Pregnant Women in Bulgaria: Evidence to Support Routine Mental-Health Screening

Background: Antenatal depression and anxiety contribute significantly to maternal morbidity and adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, structured screening and targeted interventions are largely absent from standard prenatal care in many Eastern European countries, including Bulgaria. This study examines the prevalence and psychosocial predictors of antenatal psychosocial risk using the validated Antenatal Risk Questionnaire–Revised (ANRQ-R) in a nationally underrepresented population. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 216 third-trimester pregnant women in Bulgaria. Data on sociodemographic characteristics, health behaviours, and reproductive history were collected. Multivariate logistic regression identified predictors of elevated psychosocial risk. Results: A total of 65.7% of participants met the criteria for elevated psychosocial risk. Significant risk factors included passive smoking exposure during pregnancy (OR = 5.03, p < 0.001), physical activity prior to pregnancy (OR = 1.81, p = 0.004), and a family history of hereditary disease (OR = 42.67, p < 0.001). Protective factors were better self-rated current health (OR = 0.37, p = 0.004), the presence of chronic illness (OR = 0.42, p = 0.049), previous childbirth experience (OR = 0.11, p = 0.032), and residence in Northwestern Bulgaria (OR = 0.31, p = 0.028). Despite the high prevalence of psychosocial vulnerability, only 9.5% of affected women sought professional help. Conclusions: While our findings point to important unmet needs in antenatal mental health, further research is required before national screening policies can be implemented. Pilot programs, cultural validation of tools, and system-level readiness assessments should precede broad adoption. Full article

Background: Anxiety and depression are among the most common mental health disorders affecting adolescents worldwide. Skipping breakfast is a prevalent dietary behaviour linked to inadequate nutrient intake, which may contribute to the development or exacerbation of mental health issues in this age group. Despite growing interest, a comprehensive synthesis of evidence on the association between breakfast omission and adolescent anxiety or depression remains limited. Objectives: This scoping review aimed to synthesise existing research on the association between skipping breakfast and the risk of anxiety and/or depression in adolescents. Methods: A systematic scoping review was conducted using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodological framework. A comprehensive search of PubMed, ProQuest, and EBSCOhost databases was performed, focusing on studies published in English between 2014 and 2024. Keywords included “skipping breakfast,” “risk,” “anxiety,” “depression,” and “adolescen*.” Studies were screened and selected based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: Out of 1671 initially identified studies, 12 met the inclusion criteria. The majority were cross-sectional (n = 9), with one prospective cohort study, one secondary data analysis, and one systematic review with meta-analysis. Most studies reported a significant association between breakfast skipping and increased risk of anxiety and depression in adolescents. Only one study reported no significant relationship between the two variables. Conclusions: This review underscores a consistent association between skipping breakfast and elevated risk of anxiety and depression among adolescents. While causality remains to be established, breakfast omission emerges as a modifiable lifestyle factor with potential public health implications. These findings highlight the need for prospective research, as well as the importance of community- and school-based health promotion strategies that advocate for regular and nutritious breakfast consumption as part of broader mental health support efforts. Although smart device use among children is increasing, most interventions overlook their cognitive and emotional development or rely too heavily on external control. Such approaches often overlook the developmental needs of children for emotional regulation and autonomy. Therefore, this study aims to propose a child-centred user experience (UX) framework to support digital self-regulation in preschool-aged children. The proposed system integrates multiple psychological theories—including Piaget’s concept of animistic thinking, executive function theory, Self-Determination Theory, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy—to support cognitive and emotional regulation during screen use. Key features include persistent visual cues to enhance time awareness and behavioural anticipation, narrative-based character interactions to foster empathy and agency, and ritualised closure routines supported by multimodal and tangible interaction elements. Developed as a mobile prototype, the system was iteratively refined through two-stage consultations with child and adolescent psychiatrists and a developmental psychologist, including formative design feedback and follow-up expert review. Their feedback provided preliminary validation of the system’s developmental validity and emotional coherence. These findings suggest that affectively attuned UX design is a viable alternative to conventional control-based screen-time interventions in early childhood. Full article

Suicide in children is a major global health crisis, with profound impacts on families, friends, and society. Understanding ways to ameliorate the rate of suicide attempt (SA) is critical given that it is a key factor in predicting future suicide risk. SA is the deliberate act of causing physical injury to oneself with the intent of death. The incidence of SA may be influenced by physical activity (PA). PA includes bodily movement via skeletal muscles that results in energy expenditure and physical fitness. While there is evidence to suggest that PA improves dysregulation of the parasympathetic nervous system which underpins the physiology of suicidal behaviour, evaluating the impact of PA on SA in children is required. Objectives: This systematic review aims to determine the relationship between PA and SA in children to inform alternative preventative and interventional strategies. Methods: This systematic review was registered with PROSPERO: CRD42023389415. Eight electronic databases were systematically searched. References were transferred to Covidence software for title and abstract screening and full text review were performed based on eligibility criteria: (1) children aged 6–18 years old; (2) participated in PA (individual, group exercise, or team sports); and (3) examined SA as a dependent variable. The JBI Checklist was used to measure the quality and level of bias of included studies. Results: Of the 2322 studies identified, 21 were included in the final analysis of the review. Twenty studies were cross-sectional in design, and one implemented a prospective study design. Thirteen studies (61.9%) yielded statistically significant results, indicating that increased PA, particularly team sport, may be associated with reduced odds of SA. There was some evidence to suggest that certain intensities and frequencies of PA may be beneficial to some and detrimental to other subgroups. Conclusions: The results suggest that PA may reduce the risk of suicide attempts. Although PA may be associated with reduced SA in children, future research is required, which (1) uses standardised outcome variables; (2) adopts longitudinal and experimental study designs; (3) explores qualitative research to determine distinctive factors that influence participation in PA not captured by quantitative research; and (4) examines different target populations such as children with a broad range of mental health issues. This study is titled “Success Factors in Transport Interventions: A Mixed-Method Systematic Review (1990–2022)”. The purpose of the systematic review is to (1) identify effective interventions for transitioning individuals from private car reliance to sustainable transport, (2) summarise psychosocial theories shaping transportation choices and identify enablers and barriers influencing sustainable mode adoption, and (3) determine the success factors for interventions promoting sustainable transport choices. The last search was conducted on 18 November 2022. Five databases (Scopus, Web of Science, MEDLINE, APA PsycInfo, and ProQuest) were searched using customised Boolean search strings. The identified papers were included or excluded based on the following criteria: (a) reported a modal shift from car users or cars to less CO2-emitting modes of transport, (b) covered the adoption of low-carbon transport alternatives, (c) comprised interventions to promote sustainable transport, (d) assessed or measured the effectiveness of interventions, or (e) proposed behavioural models related to mode choice and/or psychosocial barriers or drivers for car/no-car use. The identified papers eligible for inclusion were critically appraised using Sirriyeh’s Quality Assessment Tool for Studies with Diverse Designs. Inter-rater reliability was assessed using Cohen’s Kappa to evaluate the risk of bias throughout the review process, and low-quality studies identified by the quality assessment were excluded to prevent sample bias. Qualitative data were extracted in a contextually relevant manner, preserving context and meaning to avoid the author’s bias of misinterpretation. Data were extracted using a form derived from the Joanna Briggs Institute. Data transformation and synthesis followed the recommendations of the Joanna Briggs Institution for mixed-method systematic reviews using a convergent integrated approach. Of the 7999 studies, 4 qualitative, 2 mixed-method, and 30 quantitative studies successfully passed all three screening cycles and were included in the review. Many of these studies focused on modelling individuals’ mode choice decisions from a psychological perspective. In contrast, case studies explored various transport interventions to enhance sustainability in densely populated areas. Nevertheless, the current systematic reviews do not show how individuals’ inner dispositions, such as acceptance, intention, or attitude, have evolved from before to after the implementation of schemes. Of the 11 integrated findings, 9 concerned enablers and barriers to an individual’s sustainable mode choice behaviour. In addition, two integrated findings emerged based on the effectiveness of the interventions. Although numerous interventions target public acceptance of sustainable transport, this systematic review reveals a critical knowledge gap regarding their longitudinal impact on individuals and effectiveness in influencing behavioural change. However, the study may be affected by language bias as it only included peer-reviewed articles published in English. Due to methodological heterogeneity across the studies, a meta-analysis was not feasible. Further high-quality research is needed to strengthen the evidence. This systematic review is self-funded and has been registered on the International Platform of Registered Systematic Review and Meta-analysis Protocols (INPLASY; Registration Number INPLASY202420011). Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a growing global health concern due to its impact on maternal and infant health. GDM risk factors vary across populations, but international comparisons using standardised assessment tools are lacking. This study aimed to examine variations in risk factors, demographics and health behaviours among pregnant women at increased risk of GDM across four international sites and to investigate factors associated with maternal body mass index (BMI), a modifiable risk factor for GDM. This cross-sectional study included data from 804 pregnant women in Dublin (n = 213), Bristol (n = 205), Granada (n = 211) and Melbourne (n = 175) identified as having an increased risk of GDM, using the Monash GDM screening tool. Between-site differences were analysed using analysis of variance, Kruskal–Wallis and chi-square tests and factors associated with BMI at each site were examined using multiple linear regression. Despite standardised risk screening, significant heterogeneity was observed between sites in key GDM risk factors, including age (mean range 33.8–36.7 years), BMI (Melbourne 28.9 vs. Granada 26.9 kg/m2), physical activity (34.86–41.77 METs/week) and dietary intake (mean energy 1881–2136 kcal/day). Multiple factors were independently associated with BMI, including education level, ethnicity, health literacy and energy intake, with patterns varying by site. This study challenges the concept of a homogeneous “high-risk” GDM population by revealing substantial variations in risk factors and characteristics across different patient cohorts, highlighting the importance of developing context-sensitive approaches to GDM prevention. Background: It is common for patients with eating disorders (ED) to report traumatic experiences early in their lifetime. The objective of this study was to explore the presence and types of traumatic events and the comorbidity with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in a sample of adolescents with severe ED. Method: A total of 118 adolescents treated at our Eating Disorders Day Care Hospital (EDDCH) were systematically evaluated for depressive symptoms, disordered eating, early traumatic experiences, and presence of PTSD. Likewise, various clinical variables were collected including comorbidities, age upon ED diagnosis, number of hospital admissions, presence of non-suicidal self-injury, and suicide attempts. Results: Seventy-seven (65.3%) of adolescents of the total sample reported exposure to four or more traumatic events (bullying, psychological abuse, and sexual abuse being the most common). Fifty-seven of them (48.3% of the total sample) scored significantly high in PTSD assessment. Patients with ED and comorbid PTSD (PTSD+) presented higher disordered eating (p < 0.001) and depressive symptoms (p < 0.001) and also a higher prevalence of both non-suicidal self-injury (p = 0.031) and suicide attempts (p = 0.004). The depressive symptoms, measured with the CDI, emerged as an independent predictor of belonging to the PTSD+ group, explaining 22.9% of the variance. Conclusions: It is imperative to systematically screen adolescents with severe ED for traumatic events and PTSD, especially in patients presenting with more depressive symptoms and suicidal or non-suicidal self-injury behaviours, since this subset of patients could be at a higher risk of PTSD. Offering specific psychotherapeutic care targeting PTSD and/or posttraumatic symptoms in addition to the ED standard of care could arguably improve the prognosis of the ED in comorbid patients. Nickel’s durability and catalytic properties make it essential in the aerospace, automotive, electronics, and fuel cell technology industries. Wastewater analysis typically relies on sensitive but costly techniques such as ICP-MS, AAS, and ICP-AES, which require complex equipment and are unsuitable for on-site testing. This study introduces a novel screen-printed electrode array with 16 chemically and, optionally, electrochemically coated Au electrodes. Its electrochemical response to Ni2+ was tested using Na2SO3 and ChCl-EG deep eutectic solvents as electrolytes. Ni2+ solutions were prepared from NiCl2·6H2O, NiSO4·6H2O, and dry NiCl2. In Na2SO3, the linear detection ranges were 20–196 mM for NiCl2·6H2O and 89–329 mM for NiSO4·6H2O. High Ni2+ concentrations (10–500 mM) were used to simulate industrial conditions. Two linear ranges were observed, likely due to differences in electrochemical behaviour between NiCl2·6H2O and NiSO4·6H2O, despite the identical Na2SO3 electrolyte. Anion effects (Cl vs. SO42−) may influence response via complexation or ion pairing. In ChCl-EG, a linear range of 0.5–10 mM (R2 = 0.9995) and a detection limit of 1.6 µM were achieved. With a small electrolyte volume (100–200 µL), nickel detection in the nanomole range is possible. A key advantage is the array’s ability to analyze multiple analytes simultaneously via customizable electrode configurations. Future research will focus on nickel detection in industrial wastewater and its potential in the multiplexed analysis of toxic metals. Zingerone as a Neuroprotective Agent Against Cognitive Disorders: A Systematic Review of Preclinical Studies

Cognitive problems are associated with impaired learning ability and memory dysfunction. Neuroinflammation has been identified as an important factor in the progression of anxiety and depressive disorders. Zingerone is a phenolic alkanone derived from ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe), which is known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. A number of studies have investigated the effect of zingerone on neuroinflammation and cognitive impairment. However, this evidence has not been systematically reviewed. This study sought to systematically review the effect of zingerone on neuroinflammation and neurobehavioural changes associated with memory and learning impairment and anxiety-like and depressive-like behaviours. A systematic review was conducted using pre-defined search criteria on Google Scholar, Scopus and Web of Science. The records obtained were screened based on inclusion criteria, and data was extracted from the included studies. Out of the 482 studies that were identified, only 9 studies met the inclusion criteria. Neuroinflammatory markers such as interleukin 1β (IL-1β), interleukin 6 (IL-6), tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and ionized calcium binding adaptor molecule (IBA-1), as well as behavioural parameters including Morris water maze, Y-Maze, recognition test, passive avoidance test, elevated plus maze, sucrose preference test and forced swimming test were measured. Zingerone exhibited anti-neuroinflammatory effects by improving IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α levels. However, zingerone did not show any significant changes on activated microglia. The anti-neuroinflammatory mechanisms of zingerone were linked to the inhibition of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kB) activation and the NOD-like receptor family, pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome, as well as the reduction in neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS). The anxiolytic and anti-depressive effects of zingerone were also associated with an improvement in cortical cholinergic transmission, the mitigation of oxidative stress and the upregulation of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine. This review provides scientific evidence on the cognitive enhancing and neuroprotective mechanisms of zingerone, which may be beneficial for future experimental investigations. Full article

Road traffic accidents (RTAs) are a leading cause of physical injury worldwide, but they also frequently result in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This systematic review examines the prevalence, predictors, comorbidity, and treatment of PTSD among RTA survivors. Four electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, EBSCO, and ProQuest) were searched following PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Articles were included if reporting on the presence of post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of a road traffic accident in adults aged 18 years and older. Including peer-reviewed journal articles and awarded doctoral theses across all publication years, and written in English, Macedonian, Serbian, Bosnian, Croatian, and Bulgarian, identified 259 articles, and using Literature Evaluation and Grading of Evidence (LEGEND) assessment of evidence 96 were included in the final review, involving 50,275 participants. Due to the heterogeneity of findings, quantitative data were synthesized thematically rather than through meta-analytic techniques. Findings are reported from Random Control Trial (RCT) and non-RCT studies. PTSD prevalence following RTAs ranged widely across studies, from 20% (using Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, DSM-5 criteria) to over 45% (using International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, ICD-10 criteria) within six weeks post-accident (non-RCT). One-year prevalence rates ranged from 17.9% to 29.8%, with persistence of PTSD symptoms found in more than half of those initially diagnosed up to three years post-RTA (non-RCTs). Mild or severe PTSD symptoms were reported by 40% of survivors one month after the event, and comorbid depression and anxiety were also frequently observed (non-RCTs). The review found that nearly half of RTA survivors experience PTSD within six weeks, with recovery occurring over 1 to 3 years (non-RCTs). Even minor traffic accidents lead to significant psychological impacts, with 25% of survivors avoiding vehicle use for up to four months (non-RCT). Evidence-supported treatments identified include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) (RCTs and non-RCTs), Virtual Reality (VR) treatment (RCTs and non-RCTs), and Memory Flexibility training (Mem-Flex) (pilot RCT), all of which demonstrated statistically significant reductions in PTSD symptoms across validated scales. There is evidence for policy actions including mandatory and regular psychological screening post RTAs using improved assessment tools, sharing health data to better align early and ongoing treatment with additional funding and access, and support and interventions for the family for RTA comorbidities. The findings underscore the importance of prioritizing research on the psychological impacts of RTAs, particularly in regions with high incident rates, to understand better and address the global burden of post-accident trauma. Globally, 1–3% of the population has an intellectual disability, but some remain undiagnosed, resulting in limited access to essential health and social care services, poor health outcomes, and higher risks of homelessness, substance abuse, and imprisonment. A formal diagnosis enables early intervention and support. A scoping review was conducted to explore research on undiagnosed intellectual disability, screening processes, and identifying indicators. Method: The scoping review search was conducted using academic databases such as CINAHL, PsycINFO, Scopus, and PubMed, along with eight grey literature sources. In addition, the reference lists of the included studies were explored. Information specialists supported and guided the search process. The search included qualitative, quantitative, review, and mixed-method research studies published in English between 2000 and 2024. Two reviewers screened papers for eligibility by title, abstract, and full text. Result: A total of 11,475 papers were screened, with 57 papers from various countries included in the review. Indicators of intellectual disability were identified in three settings: (1) educational settings (preschool, primary, and secondary schools); (2) social care services, including homeless and community services; and (3) criminal services, such as courts, probation, and prisons, highlighting the wide applicability of findings. These indicators were linked to “experiences”, “behaviours”, “challenges”, and “observations”. Conclusion: This review emphasised the importance of early diagnosis by adopting appropriate assessment tools, which require national screening policies. It also highlighted the essential role of professionals working in intellectual disability services in identifying and supporting undiagnosed individuals, particularly within high-risk populations. Implication: The review’s findings will guide policy, practice, and research recommendations for enhancing the early identification of people with intellectual disabilities. Full article

The aim of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the sleep characteristics and behaviours of senior male, senior female, and under 21 (U21) male elite soccer players using athlete-specific questionnaires. During the preseason/early season period, 74 players from the English Premier League (n = 26, age 26 ± 5 y), Women’s Super League (n = 22, age 25 ± 5 y), and English Premier League 2 (n = 26, age 19 ± 1 y) completed the validated Athlete Sleep Screening Questionnaire (ASSQ) to obtain a sleep difficulty score (SDS) and the Athlete Sleep Behaviour Questionnaire (ASBQ) to obtain a global score and individual behaviours. We found that sleep difficulty scores were higher in senior females (5.9 ± 1.9) than senior males (4.1 ± 1.7) and U21 males (4.3 ± 1.2) (p ≤ 0.006), but no severe clinical problems were noted. Global sleep behaviour scores from the ASBQ were worse in senior males (37.9 ± 6.5) and senior females (40.6 ± 7.1) than male U21 players (33.6 ± 4.7) (p ≤ 0.021). Senior players consumed more alcohol and stimulants and felt that travel disrupted sleep; females went to bed thirstier, woke more for the bathroom, and ruminated more prior to sleep (all p < 0.05). In conclusion, senior female players reported more sleep difficulties than male senior and male U21 players. Behaviours such as pre-bed rumination, nutrition, and travel plans could be targeted to improve sleep quality in soccer players. Study limitations include data drawn from a single club in the off-season. Full article

Introduction: Chewing gum is a widespread, seemingly mundane behaviour that has been linked to diverse benefits such as improved cognitive performance, reduced stress, and enhanced alertness. While animal and human research indicate that mastication engages extensive sensorimotor networks and may also modulate higher-order cognitive and emotional processes, questions remain about the specific neural mechanisms involved. This review combines findings from neuroimaging studies—including fMRI, fNIRS, and EEG—that investigate how chewing gum alters brain activity in humans. Methods: Using a targeted search strategy, we screened the major databases (PubMed/Medline, Scopus, ResearchGate, Google Scholar, and Cochrane) from January 1980 to March 2025 for clinical studies published in English. Eligible studies explicitly measured brain activity during gum chewing using EEG, fNIRS, or fMRI. Results: After a title/abstract screening and a full-text review, thirty-two studies met the inclusion criteria for this review: 15 utilising fMRI, 10 using fNIRS, 2 using both fNIRS and EEG, and 5 employing EEG. Overall, the fMRI investigations consistently reported strong activation in bilateral motor and somatosensory cortices, the supplementary motor area, the insula, the cerebellum, and the thalamus, during gum chewing, with several studies also noting involvement of higher-order prefrontal and cingulate regions, particularly under stress conditions or when participants chewed flavoured gum. The fNIRS findings indicated that chewing gum increased oxygenated haemoglobin in the prefrontal cortex, reflecting heightened cortical blood flow; these effects were often amplified when the gum was flavoured or when participants were exposed to stressful stimuli, suggesting that both sensory and emotional variables can influence chewing-related cortical responses. Finally, the EEG studies documented transient increases in alpha and beta wave power during gum chewing, particularly when flavoured gum was used, and reported short-lived enhancements in vigilance or alertness, which tended to subside soon after participants ceased chewing. Conclusions: Neuroimaging data indicate that chewing gum reliably engages broad sensorimotor circuits while also influencing regions tied to attention, stress regulation, and possibly memory. Although these effects are often short-lived, the range of outcomes—from changes in cortical oxygenation to shifts in EEG power—underscores chewing gum’s capacity to modulate brain function beyond simple oral motor control. However, at this time, the neural changes associated with gum chewing cannot be directly linked to the positive behavioural and functional outcomes observed in studies that measure these effects without the use of neuroimaging techniques. Future research should address longer-term impacts, refine methods to isolate flavour or stress variables, and explore potential therapeutic applications for mastication-based interventions.
