The incorporation of crumb rubber derived from waste tires in asphalt pavements has gained increasing attention as a strategy to enhance performance while reducing environmental impacts, particularly in cold regions such as the Midwestern United States, where pavements are subjected to severe thermal stresses and freeze–thaw cycles. Despite the numerous performance benefits observed in previous laboratory-scale studies, field demonstrations can play a critical role in validating the use of recycled waste tires as asphalt additives. This study examines the performance benefits and environmental impacts of incorporating recycled tire rubber into asphalt mixtures via a dry modification process for cold-climate applications. Building on these findings, this paper is based on a full-scale field demonstration of a dry-process rubber-modified asphalt pavement constructed in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Performance testing was conducted at both the binder and mixture levels, and field cores were collected during the construction of field sections. To complement the performance evaluation, a life-cycle assessment (LCA) was conducted to quantify the environmental impacts of rubber-modified asphalt and conventional asphalt. The results indicate that successful rubber incorporation, combined with improved low-, intermediate-, and high-temperature performance, enhances long-term durability compared with control sections. Moreover, despite slightly higher initial environmental impacts associated with rubber incorporation, improved durability and reduced maintenance frequency can lead to lower life-cycle impacts over the long term. The findings highlight the potential of rubber-modified asphalt as a sustainable, resilient solution for cold-region pavements, offering practical insights for agencies seeking to balance performance and environmental impacts in future infrastructure design. The incorporation of ground tire rubber (GTR) into elastomeric compounds offers a sustainable route for recycling end-of-life tires; however, its effect on the structure–property relationships governing mechanical and dielectric performance remains insufficiently understood. In this study, NR/SBR composites containing 0–50 phr of devulcanized GTR were prepared and characterized through Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), swelling analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), mechanical testing, and broadband dielectric spectroscopy. FTIR and swelling results revealed enhanced matrix–GTR interaction at intermediate GTR loadings (10–20 phr), evidenced by an increased intensity of sulfur-related bands and reduced swelling degree, indicating partial chemical integration of the recycled phase into the elastomer network. Mechanical testing showed that increasing GTR content increased stiffness at high loadings, while tensile strength, elongation at break, and toughness progressively decreased due to interfacial debonding mechanisms. TGA demonstrated that the main degradation temperature of the NR/SBR matrix remained essentially unchanged (418–425 °C) across all formulations, confirming preservation of thermal stability despite increasing structural heterogeneity. Dielectric spectroscopy (10−2–3 × 106 Hz, 40–120 °C) revealed pronounced Maxwell–Wagner–Sillars interfacial polarization and thermally activated charge transport, with conductivity increasing with GTR content without evidence of electrical percolation, even at 50 phr. The results demonstrate that the performance of NR/SBR/GTR/SiO2 composites is primarily controlled by the interfacial structure generated by the recycled phase. Intermediate GTR contents (10–20 phr) provide the most effective matrix–GTR interaction, while higher loadings mainly affect mechanical integrity and dielectric response through increased structural heterogeneity. These findings provide practical guidelines for designing sustainable elastomeric compounds with high recycled content while maintaining thermal stability and controlled electrical insulation properties. This research investigates the formation and behavior of sustainable crumb rubber-modified gypsum–cement–pozzolan (GCP) composites, with a view to their use in a broad concept for construction. GCP binders are gaining attention as a low-carbon replacement for Portland cement, and the addition of recycled rubber helps the achievement of circular economy goals and potentially increases durability. The present research evaluates the impact of crumb rubber (CR) on the mechanical strength, water absorption, dimensional stability, and freeze–thaw resistance of 3D-printed GCP-rubber composites. Composite blends of variable proportions of crumb rubber were prepared at constant binder ratios. Mechanical properties were defined by prism specimens (40 × 40 × 160 mm) by the flexural and compressive strengths, and deformation was determined by micrometers to measure longitudinal strain as a function of curing. Water absorption was determined prior to freeze–thaw cycling to define pore saturation. Durability was investigated using two approaches: (1) controlled freeze–thaw experiments on cube specimens, with XF1 grade performance achieved, and (2) ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) testing of specimens 3D-printed for assessing internal structural change after long-term frost exposure. Results showed that compressive strength decreased moderately (10–20%) with increasing rubber content from 17% up to 50%, while flexural strength improved up to 15%, showing the elastomeric action of CR. Water absorption was reduced by 5–8% in the rubber-modified blends due to the hydrophobic character of rubber. Deformation tests also confirmed minimum length variation (<0.02%) during curing. Freeze–thaw durability was enormously improved, and test specimens retained more than 95% of initial strength. UPV measurements detected only a relatively modest velocity drop (~50 m/s) after 36 days cycling with subsequent stabilization up to 200 days, demonstrating long-term internal structure with minimal progressive damage. In summary, the findings demonstrate that GCP composites with crumb rubber incorporated are printable, dimensionally stable, and capable of freeze–thaw degradation resistance. Despite a moderate loss of compressive strength, the balance of introduced durability and sustainability suggests their competence as viable materials for additive manufacturing in construction. As an emerging tire wear-derived environmental contaminant, 6PPD-quinone (6PPDQ) has raised significant concerns regarding its neurotoxic potential, particularly for children exposed to recycled tire crumb rubber in playgrounds. However, the molecular mechanisms by which 6PPDQ influences neurological disorders such as epilepsy remain poorly understood. In this study, we employed an integrative framework combining network toxicology, bulk analysis of human epileptic brain tissues, Mendelian randomization, and molecular dynamics simulations to elucidate these mechanisms. Our findings, validated through CETSA-WB and SPR, identify 6PPDQ as a direct ligand that binds to and stabilizes neuronal TP53. Through a synergistic double-hit mechanism, 6PPDQ directly engages the TP53 pathway while simultaneously triggering microglial interleukin-6 secretion. These converging pathways lead to the suppression of the master antioxidant regulator Nrf2, resulting in glutathione depletion, excessive reactive oxygen species accumulation, and exacerbated neuronal damage under excitotoxic stress. Experimental validation using glutamate-induced HT22 cell models and microglia–neuron crosstalk systems confirmed that targeting the TP53/Nrf2 axis or scavenging ROS significantly attenuates 6PPDQ-induced neurotoxicity. Our findings highlight critical risks to pediatric neurological health posed by tire-derived contaminants and identify the TP53/Nrf2 axis as a promising therapeutic target. Furthermore, this work provides a robust scientific basis for refining risk assessment frameworks and developing regulatory strategies to mitigate environmental exposure to 6PPDQ. Full article

This study evaluates the performance of recycled, long-term-aged rubber-modified asphalt (RMA) mixtures rejuvenated with soybean oil. Crumb rubber is widely used in asphalt mixtures for its ability to enhance elasticity, crack resistance, and durability. However, long-term aging leads to oxidative hardening, increased stiffness, and reduced cracking resistance, creating a need for effective rejuvenation strategies. To simulate extended field aging, plant-produced RMA mixtures were conditioned at 85 °C for five and ten days and subsequently treated with 10% soybean oil by binder weight. Mechanical performance was assessed using the Disc-Shaped Compact Tension test, Indirect Tensile Asphalt Cracking Test, Hamburg Wheel Tracking Test, and Rapid Shear Rutting Test. Rejuvenation effectively reversed aging-related deterioration, increasing fracture energy by 137–211% and improving cracking tolerance indices by 22–104%, thereby restoring or surpassing the cracking performance of unaged RMA mixtures. This improvement in flexibility was accompanied by reduced rutting resistance, with rutting tolerance indices decreasing by 52–70%, consistent with the softening effect of bio-based oils. Performance space diagrams further illustrated the trade-off between enhanced cracking resistance and increased rut susceptibility. Overall, the results demonstrate that soybean oil provides strong restorative capabilities for aged RMA mixtures, but achieving balanced field performance requires optimization of rejuvenator dosage. Waste tire disposal and high-ground-stress soft rock roadway instability are pressing global challenges. This study develops sustainable rubber granule concrete (RGC) using waste tire rubber as a key component, aiming to realize waste valorization and floor heave control. RGC’s mechanical properties (uniaxial/triaxial compression, compressibility, ductility) were systematically tested, and its pressure relief mechanism was validated via finite element analysis (ABAQUS/FLAC) and 60-day field monitoring. Results show that RGC with optimal parameters (12% rubber content, 3–4 GPa elastic modulus, 250–350 mm thickness) achieves 64% bottom stress reduction and >40% displacement control. The material’s excellent energy absorption and flexibility address the brittleness of conventional concrete, ensuring stable support in high-stress environments. This work provides a sustainable, cost-effective concrete modification strategy, bridging waste recycling and geotechnical engineering, with broad implications for low-intensity, high-toughness material applications. The construction sector consumes significant amounts of natural resources and contributes substantially to global CO2 emissions, making it necessary to develop materials with a reduced environmental impact. In this context, the valorization of reusable industrial waste as secondary raw materials represents a strategic direction for applying circular economy principles and for decarbonizing the construction materials industry. The scientific problem addressed in this review is the urgent need to develop construction materials with a reduced environmental footprint, given that the construction sector is a major consumer of natural resources and a significant contributor to global CO2 emissions. This challenge requires the identification and critical evaluation of sustainable solutions that support decarbonization and the transition toward a circular economy. The main findings indicate that the valorization of industrial waste offers high decarbonization potential: supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), such as ground granulated blast furnace slag and fly ash, can reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 20–50%, while alkali-activated binders and geopolymers achieve reductions of 40–80% compared to Portland cement. These materials also enhance durability, extending service life by 10–20% in aggressive environments, although early-age strength may decrease by 10–30%; recycled aggregates derived from construction and demolition waste (CDW) can substitute up to 100% of natural aggregates, while rubber fibers can increase impact resistance by 30–50% and reduce density by 10–20%. However, key limitations relate to waste variability, heavy metal leaching risks (requiring immobilization efficiencies > 90%), and the relatively low technological maturity of many solutions (TRL < 7), leading to the TRL–CO2 paradox and highlighting the need for standardization and performance-based regulatory frameworks. The synthesized results indicate that the appropriate integration of industrial waste enables a significant reduction in clinker content, lowers associated CO2 emissions, and decreases primary energy consumption while maintaining physical–mechanical properties and durability characteristics comparable to or in some cases superior to those of traditional materials, if mix design is based on clear performance criteria, stratified according to the type of waste, dosage used, curing regime, binder chemistry, and the target application. This research aims to study the compressive behavior of concrete with partial replacement of fine aggregate by recycled rubber. In addition, the mechanical capacity of these concretes will be analyzed when reinforced by carbon fibers (CFRP) and basalt (BFRP) confinement. To carry out the work, 48 cylindrical test specimens were made, corresponding to 4 mixes, with different percentages of recycled rubber by volume (0%, 10%, 20%, and 30%). The compressive behavior of unreinforced concrete with and without recycled rubber, reinforced concrete made from concrete with and without recycled rubber previously taken to failure, and reinforced concrete with and without recycled rubber without prior failure were evaluated in order to assess the influence of concrete quality before placing the reinforcement. The results show that replacing fine aggregate with recycled rubber in concrete reduces its strength and stiffness, increasing its ductility, with the optimum replacement percentage being 10%. On the other hand, confining concrete with FRP (BFRP and CFRP) improves its strength and ductility compared to unconfined concrete, obtaining similar values regardless of the initial strength of the reinforcing concrete. Confining concrete with CFRP achieves strength improvements of 26% compared to reinforcement with BFRP. Full article

This paper presents a systematic review of compression casting concrete (CCC) based on a comprehensive literature retrieval from the Web of Science, covering publications from 2020 to 2026. CCC applies pressure on fresh concrete to expel excess internal water and air, driving the cement paste to fully penetrate the aggregate pores, which can significantly optimize the micro- and macro-properties of concrete. With environmental friendliness and resource-saving merits, CCC has become a global research hotspot in the field of civil engineering and construction. Research contributions have been made by scholars from China, Australia, Pakistan, France, the UK, India, Italy and other regions. This paper systematically elaborates the basic principles and core advantages of the compression casting technology, focusing on the analysis of key research directions, including mechanical properties, ductility improvement, durability, solid waste resource utilization (waste rubber particles, recycled concrete aggregates), compression-casting-reinforced concrete members and special-purpose preparation equipment. It analyzes the advantages and disadvantages from both micro and macro perspectives and demonstrates the engineering application feasibility and development potential of this technology. It is concluded that the mechanical properties of CCC with compressive strength exceeding 60 MPa still require further in-depth investigation, compression casting technology improves the utilization efficiency of red mud, durability research on CCC remains insufficient, and specialized equipment for large-scale reinforced concrete CCC members needs further development. There are no unique and universally accepted procedures for the determination of the maximum and minimum void ratios, emax and emin. This issue is particularly pertinent in the characterisation of the alternative sustainable materials examined in this study: well-graded tyre-derived aggregate (TDA), recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) and their mixtures (RCA-TDA), with a rubber content by weight of ΧM = 11, 23 and 55%. Uniformly graded TDA–sand mixtures with ΧM = 0, 15, 27, 42, and 100% were also considered. The results from dry and moist samples were compared with void ratios obtained after Proctor compaction and static loading. It was found that, in contrast to vibration for sand and sand–TDA mixtures, the most efficient densification techniques involve impact compaction at the optimum water content for RCA and RCA-TDA and static loading for TDA. Inversion of dry RCA, TDA and RCA-TDA samples in a graduated cylinder was the most effective to consistently achieve emax but induced visible segregation. Unlike sand–rubber mixtures, well-graded RCA-TDA did not exhibit a threshold rubber content at which emax and emin fell below those of RCA and TDA alone, suggesting reduced segregation. The findings offer practical guidance for improving specimen preparation reproducibility in the laboratory. Full article

This paper develops a shock-absorbing asphalt mixture for pedestrian pavements that mitigates the impact of normal walking on pedestrians’ bodies by incorporating crumb rubber from recycled tires to produce a soft mixture. This aims to reduce injuries to vulnerable road users, enable the rethinking of urban pavement designs, and address the major challenges facing societies, ultimately achieving more sustainable, resilient, and safer cities. To promote land sustainability, the designed asphalt mixture should be pervious, allowing water to infiltrate into the underlying soil. The development of the asphalt mixture followed an experimental methodology that involved formulating asphalt mixtures with conventional bitumen, polymer-modified bitumen, and bituminous emulsion. The shock-absorbing capability was evaluated by measuring the deformation of the asphalt mixture over time in response to a falling weight from a Light Falling Weight Deflectometer. Permeability capabilities were assessed through the permeability test. Subsequently, the asphalt mixture was characterized according to its macrotexture, friction, air void content, rutting resistance, and stiffness to assess its suitability as a walking surface material. Results indicate that increasing rubber content enhances deformation capacity and improves cushioning but reduces stiffness. Among the solutions, mixtures with polymer-modified bitumen and intermediate rubber content achieved the balance between impact attenuation and mechanical performance. Full article

Co-pyrolysis of polyolefins (LDPE, PP, PS) mixed with silicone rubber (SR) was investigated using a laboratory-scale pyrolysis apparatus to evaluate product composition, synergistic interactions, and siloxane recovery potential. Synergistic effects were assessed by comparing experimental mass balances and product distributions with calculated values derived from individual polymer pyrolysis. Co-pyrolysis resulted in a reduction in liquid yield and an increase in gaseous products and solid residue compared to calculated values, with liquid yields decreasing by up to ≈15 wt% at high SR content. This shift was accompanied by an enrichment in lighter hydrocarbons in both phases, reaching up to a ≈18% relative increase at high SR content, and by a redistribution towards smaller cyclic siloxanes. Chromatographic analysis confirmed that no new compounds were formed, but the proportion of low molecular weight species increased with silicone content. These effects are attributed to the distinct thermal behavior of the polymers, as silicone rubber does not melt but becomes brittle, allowing molten polyolefins to infiltrate surface cracks and prolong residence time, thereby promoting secondary cracking. Furthermore, recovery of hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane (D3), the primary silicone pyrolysis product, was demonstrated from the liquid co-pyrolysis products via solvent-assisted filtration using ethanol, achieving purities above 99.5% and recovery rates up to ≈75% compared to other possible methods. These findings provide insights into co-pyrolysis behavior and offer a basis for developing strategies for the recovery of siloxane and advanced recycling of mixed polymer waste. Full article

The synergistic utilization of waste plastics and tires in asphalt modification is a highly promising sustainable strategy. However, the differential impacts of distinct plastic molecular architectures on the performance and network evolution of rubber-modified asphalt remain fundamentally unclear. This study systematically investigated the physical, rheological, and microstructural properties of composite asphalts modified with desulfurized rubber powder (DRP) and four representative plastics: polyethylene (PE), styrene–isoprene–styrene (SIS), styrene–ethylene–butylene–styrene (SEBS), and styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS). Furthermore, the pavement performance of the asphalt mixtures prepared via dry and wet methods was comparatively evaluated. Microstructural and spectroscopic analyses revealed that the composite modification was primarily governed by physical blending and swelling. The non-polar, semi-crystalline PE resulted in severe phase separation and extreme low-temperature brittleness. Conversely, the saturated hydrogenated mid-blocks of SEBS endowed the asphalt with the highest high-temperature rutting resistance but severely compromised its low-temperature stress relaxation. Remarkably, SBS interacted synergistically with DRP to form a highly homogeneous and densely interwoven three-dimensional network, thereby achieving an optimal viscoelastic balance, outstanding storage stability, and superior low-temperature ductility. Pavement performance tests further demonstrated that the wet method significantly outperformed the dry method for block copolymers by facilitating sufficient pre-swelling. Overall, the SBS-DRP composite-modified asphalt prepared via the wet method exhibited the most exceptional and balanced comprehensive pavement performance, providing a robust theoretical foundation for the sustainable and high-value recycling of multi-source solid wastes in paving engineering. The increasing demand for sustainable materials in electrical engineering has encouraged the substitution of conventional fillers in epoxy insulation with recycled industrial by-products. This study investigates the potential use of waste tire rubber particles and zinc oxide recovered from electric arc furnace dust as eco-friendly fillers for epoxy resins in high-voltage insulation applications. Four material variants were fabricated: pure epoxy, epoxy with 10 wt% ZnO (0.7 mm thickness), epoxy with 10 wt% tire rubber (0.9 mm thickness), and epoxy with 20 wt% tire rubber (0.9 mm thickness). The breakdown voltage of each composite was measured under AC voltage. Results indicate that filler type and concentration influence breakdown behavior within each thickness group. The 10 wt% ZnO-filled epoxy exhibited a moderate enhancement in breakdown voltage compared with pure epoxy of the same thickness, consistent with interfacial modifications commonly observed in oxide-filled epoxy systems. Conversely, tire rubber fillers led to reduced breakdown performance, likely due to increased dielectric heterogeneity introduced by the elastomeric phase. No direct comparison between ZnO- and rubber-filled systems was performed due to differences in manufacturable sample thickness. The findings contribute to the evaluation of recycled fillers in dielectric composite systems within a circular-economy framework. Full article
