This study analyzes the impact of geometric variations induced by the manufacturing process on the aerodynamic efficiency of an airfoil used in the design of a 3 kW wind turbine blade. For this purpose, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was implemented, and the results were compared with those obtained using QBlade software. After blade fabrication, experimental evaluation was performed using the laser triangulation technique, enabling the reconstruction of the deformed airfoils and their comparison with the original geometry. Additional CFD simulations were carried out on the manufactured airfoil to quantify the loss of aerodynamic efficiency due to geometrical deformations. The results show that the geometric deviations significantly affect the aerodynamic coefficients, generating a decrease in the lift coefficient and an increase in the drag coefficient, which negatively impacts the airfoil aerodynamic efficiency. A 14.9% reduction in the rotor power coefficient was observed with the deformed airfoils compared to the original design. This study emphasizes the importance of quality control in wind turbine blade manufacturing processes and its impact on turbine power performance. In addition, the findings can contribute to the development of design compensation strategies to mitigate the adverse effects of geometric imperfections on the aerodynamic performance of wind turbines. This paper proposes a novel hierarchical control architecture that combines Model Predictive Control (MPC) with Explicit Model-Following Control (EMFC) to enable accurate and efficient trajectory tracking for quadrotor electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft operating in urban environments. The approach addresses the challenges of strong nonlinear dynamics, multi-axis coupling, and stringent safety constraints by separating the planning task from the fast-response control task. The MPC layer generates constrained velocity and yaw rate commands based on a simplified inertial prediction model, effectively reducing computational complexity while accounting for physical and operational limits. The EMFC layer then compensates for dynamic couplings and ensures the rapid execution of commands. A high-fidelity simulation model, incorporating rotor flapping dynamics, differential collective pitch control, and enhanced aerodynamic interference effects, is developed to validate the controller. Four representative ADS-33E-PRF tasks—Hover, Hovering Turn, Pirouette, and Vertical Maneuver—are simulated. Results demonstrate that the proposed controller achieves accurate trajectory tracking, stable flight performance, and full compliance with ADS-33E-PRF criteria, highlighting its potential for autonomous urban air mobility applications. This paper aims to analyze the performance of a tilt-rotor fixed-wing RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft System) using a segmented approach, focusing on a nominal mission for SAR (Search and Rescue) applications. The study employs optimization techniques tailored to each segment to meet power consumption requirements, and the results highlight the accuracy of the physical characterization, which incorporates nonlinear propulsive and aerodynamic models derived from wind tunnel test campaigns. Critical segments for this nominal mission, such as the vertical take off or the transition from vertical to horizontal flight regimes, are addressed to fully understand the performance response of the aircraft. The proposed framework integrates experimental models into trajectory optimization procedures for each segment, enabling a realistic and modular analysis of energy use and aerodynamic performance. This approach provides valuable insights for both flight control design and future sizing iterations of convertible UAVs (Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles). Full article

This paper presents a CFD-based method for the aerodynamic design of a high-pressure compressor rotor blisk, taking into account manufacturing constraints. Focus is placed on the influence of geometric deviations caused by the dynamic constraints of the milling machine. Special attention is given to the leading edge region of the blade, where high curvature results in increased sensitivity in both aerodynamic behavior and manufacturability. The generic blisk geometry on which this study is based is characterized by an elliptical leading edge. For the optimization, the leading edge is described by Bézier curves that transition smoothly to the suction and pressure sides with continuous curvature and a non-dimensional length ratio. In steady-state RANS parameter studies, the length ratio is systematically varied while the chord length is kept constant. For the aerodynamic evaluation of the design’s key performance parameters such as blade pressure distribution, total pressure loss and compressor efficiency are considered. To evaluate the machine dynamics for a given design, compliance with the nominal feed rate and the deviation between the planned and actual tool tip positions were used as evaluation parameters. Compared to the reference geometry with an elliptical leading edge, the purely aerodynamic optimization achieved an isentropic efficiency improvement of +0.24 percentage points in the aerodynamic design point and a profile deviation improvement of 3 µm in the 99th quantile. The interdisciplinary optimization achieved an improvement of +0.20 percentage points and 30 µm, respectively. This comparative study illustrates the potential of multidisciplinary design approaches that balance aerodynamic performance goals with manufacturability via a novel approach for Design-to-Manufacture-to-Design. The turbine rotor is a core component in many energy conversion systems, where it is subjected to loads such as aerodynamic and centrifugal forces that make it highly susceptible to damage. Consequently, the reliability of the turbine rotor ranks among the key aspects of concern. This paper proposes an efficient approach based on the kriging model to conduct the reliability analysis of a turbine rotor. First, a parametric model of the turbine rotor was established. This parametric model was subsequently applied in a multifactor fluid–structure interaction model used to analyze the working performance of the turbine rotor. Finally, a kriging surrogate model was built and applied using these data in combination with various reliability analysis methods to analyze the structural reliability and reliability sensitivities of the turbine rotor. Furthermore, the reliability sensitivity results indicated that the outlet pressure had the greatest impact on rotor reliability. Thus, the proposed method was shown to have practical application value in the reliability analysis of the rotor structure. Full article

A standard approach to design begins with scaling up state-of-the-art machines to new target dimensions, moving towards larger rotors with lower specific energy to maximize revenue and enable power production in lower wind speed areas. This trend is particularly crucial in floating offshore wind in the Mediterranean Sea, where the high levelized cost of energy poses significant risks to the sustainability of investments in new projects. In this context, the conventional approach of scaling up machines designed for fixed foundations and strong offshore winds may not be optimal. Additionally, modern large-scale wind turbines for offshore applications face challenges in achieving high aerodynamic performance in thick root regions. This study proposes a holistic optimization framework that combines multi-fidelity analyses and tools to address the new challenges in wind turbine rotor design, accounting for the novel demands of this application. The method is based on a modular optimization framework for the aerodynamic design of a new wind turbine rotor, where the cost function block is defined with the aid of a model reduction strategy. The link between the full-order model required to evaluate the target rotor’s performance, the physical aspects of blade aerodynamics, and the optimization algorithm that needs several evaluations of the cost function is provided by the definition of a surrogate model (SM). An intelligent SM definition strategy is adopted to minimize the computational effort required to build a reliable model of the cost function. The strategy is based on the construction of a self-adaptive, automatic refinement of the training space, while the particular SM is defined by the use of stochastic radial basis functions. The goal of this paper is to describe the new aerodynamic design strategy, its performance, and results, presenting a case study of a 15 MW wind turbine blades optimized for specific deepwater sites in the Mediterranean Sea. For the airfoil in freestream, the pressure difference between the upper and lower surfaces and the variations in pressure gradients are significant at its leading edge area. Under reasonable deflections, the active leading edge can effectively change airfoil aerodynamic loads, which helps to improve the rotor aerodynamic performance. In this paper, a modeling method for an airfoil with an active leading edge was developed to calculate its aerodynamic loads. The pitch motion of the rotor blade and the leading edge deflections were taken into account. Firstly, simulations of steady and unsteady flow for the airfoil with an active leading edge were conducted under different boundary conditions and with different leading edge deflection movement. Secondly, the rational function approximation (RFA) was employed to establish the relationship between aerodynamic loads and airfoil/active leading edge deflections. Then, coefficient matrices of the RFA approach were identified based on a limited number of high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results. Finally, an aerodynamic model of the airfoil with an active leading edge was developed, and its accuracy was validated by comparing it to the high-fidelity CFD results. Comparative results reveal that the developed model can calculate the aerodynamic loads of an airfoil with an active leading edge accurately and efficiently when applied appropriately. The modeling method can be used in aerodynamic load calculations and the aeroelastic coupling analysis of a rotor with active control devices. Full article

As designers push engine efficiency closer to thermodynamic limits, the analysis of flow instabilities developed in a high-pressure turbine (HPT) is crucial to minimizing aerodynamic losses and optimizing secondary air systems. Purge flow, while essential for protecting turbine components from thermal stress, significantly impacts the overall efficiency of the engine and is strictly connected to cavity modes and rim-seal instabilities. This paper presents an experimental investigation of these instabilities in an HPT stage, tested under engine-representative flow conditions in the short-duration turbine rig of the von Karman Institute. As operating conditions significantly influence instability behavior, this study provides valuable insight for future turbine design. Fast-response pressure measurements reveal asynchronous flow instabilities linked to ingress–egress mechanisms, with intensities modulated by the purge rate (PR). The maximum strength is reached at PR = 1.0%, with comparable intensities persisting for higher rates. For lower PRs, the instability diminishes as the cavity becomes unsealed. An analysis based on the cross-power spectral density is applied to quantify the characteristics of the rotating instabilities. The speed of the asynchronous structures exhibits minimal sensitivity to the PR, approximately 65% of the rotor speed. In contrast, the structures’ length scale shows considerable variation, ranging from 11–12 lobes at PR = 1.0% to 14 lobes for PR = 1.74%. The frequency domain analysis reveals a complex modulation of these instabilities and suggests a potential correlation with low-engine-order fluctuations. Full article

This article represents a full estimation of helicopter rotor aerodynamic characteristics in ground effect conditions through the application of a coupled empirical blade element–momentum theory algorithm. The main focus of this research includes the evaluation of the required weighted power coefficients CPσ for a hovering state in close proximity to obstacles and their relation to the weighted thrust force coefficients’ values CTσ, varying the relative distance from the helicopter rotational plane to the ground surface HR and the rotor’s collective pitch angle (θ). The represented numerical and experimental results show that an increase in the collective pitch angles (θ) leads to a rise in the generated weighted thrust force coefficients CTσ and in the weighted power coefficients CPσ for every individual fixed normalized distance from the ground surface HR. Moreover, a decline in the relative distance from the ground HR requires less power to keep the rotation going in hover. The dependencies indicate that the ground effect zone covers a distance of up to 2R from the rotational plane to the ground surface. Full article

This paper details the development of a full turbine model and ensuing aero-servo-elastic analysis of the International Energy Agency’s 15MW Reference Wind Turbine. This model provides the means to obtain realistic turbine performance data, of which normal and tangential blade loads are extracted and applied to a simplified drivetrain model developed expressly to quantify the shaft eccentricities caused by aerodynamic loading, thus determining the impact of aerodynamic loading on the generator structure. During this process, a method to determine main bearing stiffness values is presented, and values for the IEA-15MW-RWT obtained. It was found that wind speeds in the region of turbine cut-out induce shaft eccentricities as high as 56%, and that tangential loading has a significant contribution to shaft eccentricities, increasing deflection at the generator area by as much as 106% at high windspeeds, necessitating its inclusion. During a subsequent generator structure optimisation, the shaft eccentricities caused by the loading scenarios examined in this paper were found to increase the necessary mass of the rotor structure by 40%, to meet the reduced airgap clearance. Bioinspired morphing offers a powerful route to higher aerodynamic and hydrodynamic efficiency. Birds reposition feathers, bats extend compliant membrane wings, and fish modulate fin stiffness, tailoring lift, drag, and thrust in real time. To capture these advantages, engineers are developing airfoils, rotor blades, and hydrofoils that actively change shape, reducing drag, improving maneuverability, and harvesting energy from unsteady flows. This review surveys over 296 studies, with primary emphasis on literature published between 2015 and 2025, distilling four biological archetypes—avian wing morphing, bat-wing elasticity, fish-fin compliance, and tubercled marine flippers—and tracing their translation into morphing aircraft, ornithopters, rotorcraft, unmanned aerial vehicles, and tidal or wave-energy converters. We compare experimental demonstrations and numerical simulations, identify consensus performance gains (up to 30% increase in lift-to-drag ratio, 4 dB noise reduction, and 15% boost in propulsive or power-capture efficiency), and analyze materials, actuation, control strategies, certification, and durability as the main barriers to deployment. Advances in multifunctional composites, electroactive polymers, and model-based adaptive control have moved prototypes from laboratory proof-of-concept toward field testing. Continued collaboration among biology, materials science, control engineering, and fluid dynamics is essential to unlock robust, scalable morphing technologies that meet future efficiency and sustainability targets. This study investigates an aerodynamic optimization framework inspired by marine biological morphology, utilizing the sailfish profile as a basis for airfoil configuration. Through Latin hypercube experimental design combined with optimization algorithms, four key geometric variables governing the airfoil’s hydrodynamic characteristics were systematically analyzed. Parametric studies revealed that pivotal factors including installation angle significantly influenced the fluid dynamic performance metrics of lift generation and pressure drag. Response surface methodology was employed to establish predictive models for these critical performance indicators, effectively reducing computational resource consumption and experimental validation costs. The refined bio-inspired configuration demonstrated multi-objective performance improvements compared to the baseline configuration, validating the computational framework’s effectiveness for hydrodynamic profile optimization studies. Furthermore, a coaxial dual-rotor vertical axis turbine configuration was developed, integrating centrifugal and axial-flow energy conversion mechanisms through a shared drivetrain system. The centrifugal rotor component harnessed tidal current kinetic energy while the axial-flow rotor module captured wave-induced potential energy. Transient numerical simulations employing dynamic mesh techniques and user-defined functions within the Fluent environment were conducted to analyze rotor interactions. Results indicated the centrifugal subsystem demonstrated peak hydrodynamic efficiency at a 25° installation angle, whereas the axial-flow module achieves optimal performance at 35° blade orientation. Parametric optimization revealed maximum energy extraction efficiency for the centrifugal rotor occurs at λ = 1.25 tip-speed ratio under Re = 1.3 × 105 flow conditions, while the axial-flow counterpart attained optimal performance at λ = 1.5 with Re = 5.5 × 104. This synergistic configuration demonstrated complementary operational characteristics under marine energy conversion scenarios. Full article

In this paper, the aerodynamic performance of an improved hybrid vertical-axis wind turbine is investigated, and the performance of the hybrid turbine at high tip–speed ratios is significantly enhanced by adding a spoiler at the end of the inner rotor. The improved design increases the average torque coefficient by 7.4% and the peak power coefficient by 32.4%, which effectively solves the problem of power loss due to the negative torque of the inner rotor in the conventional hybrid turbine at high TSR; the spoiler improves the performance of the outer rotor in the wake region by optimizing the airflow distribution, reducing the counter-pressure differential, lowering the inner rotor drag and at the same time attenuating the wake turbulence intensity. The study verifies the validity of the design through 2D CFD simulation, and provides a new idea for the optimization of hybrid wind turbines, which is especially suitable for low wind speed and complex terrain environments, and is of great significance for the promotion of renewable energy technology development. Optimal Process Control for Rotor Speed Recovery and Secondary Frequency Drop Mitigation in Wind Turbine Frequency Regulation

Driven by the demand for low-carbon and sustainable development, power systems are increasingly transitioning toward higher proportions of renewable energy and power-electronic interfaces, leading to a growing requirement for wind turbines to provide inertia support and frequency regulation (FR). Wind turbine kinetic energy-based FR inherently involves a trade-off between rotor speed recovery and grid stability: aggressive acceleration exacerbates the secondary frequency drop (SFD), while suppressing SFD prolongs rotor speed recovery. This study aims to resolve this dynamic coupling conflict and optimize the rotor speed recovery process by employing a segmented rotor speed recovery strategy. Firstly, a detailed wind farm-integrated frequency response model is developed. Leveraging its identified speed recovery dynamics, a five-dimensional rotor speed recovery evaluation framework is established. Subsequently, guided by this evaluation framework, a segmented rotor speed recovery control strategy is designed. Finally, three validation scenarios—a single wind turbine, 10% wind power penetration, and 30% wind power penetration—are constructed to evaluate the proposed strategy. Comparative analysis demonstrates that the proposed segmented rotor speed recovery strategy reduces aerodynamic power recovery time by 28.5% and power disturbance by 47.3% in an operational scenario with 30% wind power penetration, effectively achieving synergistic coordination of recovery acceleration and SFD suppression. With the increasing capacity of wind turbines, key components including the rotor diameter, tower height, and tower radius expand correspondingly. This heightened inertia extends the response time of pitch actuators during rapid wind speed variations occurring above the rated wind speed. Consequently, wind turbines encounter significant output power oscillations and complex structural loading challenges. To address these issues, this paper proposes a novel pitch control strategy combining an effective wind speed estimation with the inverse system method. The developed control system aims to stabilize the power output and rotational speed despite wind speed fluctuations. Central to this approach is the estimation of the aerodynamic rotor torque using an extended Kalman filter (EKF) applied to the drive train model. The estimated torque is then utilized to compute the effective wind speed at the rotor plane via a differential method. Leveraging this wind speed estimate, the inverse system technique transforms the nonlinear wind turbine dynamics into a linearized, decoupled pseudo-linear system. This linearization facilitates the design of a more agile pitch controller. Simulation outcomes demonstrate that the proposed strategy markedly enhances the pitch response speed, diminishes output power oscillations, and alleviates structural loads, notably at the tower base. These improvements bolster operational safety and stability under the above-rated wind speed conditions. Full article
