This study conducts a numerical simulation of the working performance of a single horizontal shaft forced mixer using the Discrete Element Method (DEM). It systematically investigates the effects of blade installation angle, feeding method, mixing speed, and coarse aggregate particle size on the mixing uniformity. A 1:2 scale model was developed, incorporating Newton’s laws of motion and a soft-sphere contact model to simulate the particle trajectories and interactions during mixing. The results indicate that top–bottom feeding enhances mixing efficiency significantly by forming vertical convective circulation, achieving a mixing uniformity above 0.9. A moderate rotation speed of 30 rpm provides the best balance between energy consumption and mixing performance. As the coarse aggregate size increases (from 9 mm to 15 mm), the enhanced particle inertia leads to a decrease in mixing uniformity (from 0.9 to 0.6). Additionally, the discrepancy between simulation and experimental results is less than 0.1, validating the reliability of the model. This research offers theoretical guidance for the structural optimization and parameter selection of single-shaft mixers, contributing to improved mixing efficiency and concrete quality in engineering applications. Due to the structural aspects of the wind turbine, such as wind shear and tower shadow effects, the output power of the wind turbine has periodic fluctuations, known as 3P fluctuations. These fluctuations can reduce overall power generation and deteriorate power quality. In this context, this paper proposes a power smoothing control method that utilizes rotor inertia and a DC-link capacitor as small-scale energy storage devices. First, the typical energy storage capacities of the rotor’s rotational kinetic energy and the DC-link capacitor’s electrostatic energy are analyzed to assess their smoothing potential. Secondly, a control method is presented to apply the rotor and the DC-link capacitor as small-scale energy storage, with the smoothing frequency range allocated according to their respective storage capacities. Finally, the proposed method is compared with the conventional maximum power point tracking (MPPT) method and the 3P-notch filter method. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified through MATLAB/Simulink simulations, demonstrating its capability to mitigate periodic power fluctuations. The results showed that the proposed control method is applicable, reliable, and effective in mitigating periodic power fluctuations. Full article

Rotating machinery is essential in various industrial fields, and growing demands for high performance under harsh operating conditions have heightened interest in fault diagnosis and prognostic technologies. However, a major challenge in fault diagnosis research lies in the scarcity of data, primarily due to the inability to deliberately introduce faults into machines during actual operation. In this study, a physical model is proposed to realistically simulate the system behavior of a ship’s turbo-rotating machinery by coupling the torsional and lateral vibrations of the rotor. While previous studies employed simplified single-shaft models, the proposed model adopted gear mesh interactions to reflect the coupling behavior between shafts. Furthermore, the time-domain response of the system is analyzed through state-space transformation. The proposed model was applied to simulate imbalance and gear teeth damage conditions that may occur in marine turbo-rotating systems and the results were compared with those under normal operating conditions. The analysis confirmed that the model effectively reproduces fault-induced dynamic characteristics. By enabling rapid implementation of various fault conditions and efficient data acquisition data, the proposed model is expected to contribute to enhancing the reliability of fault diagnosis and prognostic research. Gas turbines in land-based microgrids and shipboard-isolated power grids frequently face operational challenges, such as the startup and shutdown of high-power equipment and sudden load fluctuations, which significantly impact their performance. To examine the dynamic behavior of gas turbines under transitional operating conditions, a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamic simulation is employed to create a model of the gas turbine rotor, incorporating thermal inertia, which is then analyzed in conjunction with three-dimensional finite element methods. The governing equations of the flow field are discretized, providing results for the flow and temperature fields throughout the entire flow path. A hybrid approach, combining temperature differences and heat flux density, is applied to set the thermal boundary conditions for the walls, with the turbine’s operational state determined based on the direction of heat transfer. Additionally, mesh division techniques and turbulence models are selected based on the geometric dimensions and operating conditions of the compressor and turbine. The simulation results reveal that thermal inertia induces a shift in the dynamic characteristics of the rotor components. Under the same heat transfer conditions, variations in rotational speed have a minimal impact on the shift in the characteristic curve. The working fluid temperature inside the compressor components is lower, with a smaller temperature difference from the wall, resulting in less intense heat transfer compared to the turbine components. Overall, heat transfer accounts for only about 0.1% of the total enthalpy at the inlet. When heat exchange occurs between the working fluid and the walls, around 6–15% of the exchanged heat is converted into changes in technical work, with this percentage increasing as the temperature difference rises. With the increasing capacity of wind turbines, key components including the rotor diameter, tower height, and tower radius expand correspondingly. This heightened inertia extends the response time of pitch actuators during rapid wind speed variations occurring above the rated wind speed. Consequently, wind turbines encounter significant output power oscillations and complex structural loading challenges. To address these issues, this paper proposes a novel pitch control strategy combining an effective wind speed estimation with the inverse system method. The developed control system aims to stabilize the power output and rotational speed despite wind speed fluctuations. Central to this approach is the estimation of the aerodynamic rotor torque using an extended Kalman filter (EKF) applied to the drive train model. The estimated torque is then utilized to compute the effective wind speed at the rotor plane via a differential method. Leveraging this wind speed estimate, the inverse system technique transforms the nonlinear wind turbine dynamics into a linearized, decoupled pseudo-linear system. This linearization facilitates the design of a more agile pitch controller. Simulation outcomes demonstrate that the proposed strategy markedly enhances the pitch response speed, diminishes output power oscillations, and alleviates structural loads, notably at the tower base. These improvements bolster operational safety and stability under the above-rated wind speed conditions. Full article

Composite rotors, attributing to their leveraging characteristics of the light weight, high strength, high rigidity, corrosion resistance, and low noise, can significantly reduce the moment of inertia and enhance equipment operational efficiency. Using carbon fiber/glass fiber hybrid-reinforced resin–matrix composites as the rotor base material, the radial stability of a rotor can be effectively increased by regulating the fiber volume content. Meanwhile, the introduction of glass fiber not only enables the transition between the metal hub and composite rim but also optimizes the cost structure of the composite system, overcoming the economic bottleneck of single carbon fiber-reinforced resin–matrix composite rotors. This paper employs the finite element method to analyze a three-dimensional model of a composite rotor, investigating the performance of its metal hub and hybrid-reinforced resin–matrix composite rim. According to the radial stress distribution of the composite rotor during operation, the mixing ratio of carbon fiber/glass fiber is adjusted. The high-speed rotation condition of the composite rotor at 18,000 revolutions per minute is simulated to verify its safety and reliability. Full article

Maintaining a spacecraft’s center of mass at the origin of a body-fixed coordinate system is often key to precision trajectory tracking. Typically, the inertia matrix is estimated and verified with preliminary ground testing. This article presents groundbreaking preliminary results and significant findings from on-orbit space experiments validating recently proposed methods as part of a larger study over multiple years. Time-varying estimates of inertia moments and products are used to reveal time-varying estimates of the location of spacecraft center of mass using geosynchronous orbiting test satellites proposing a novel two-norm optimal projection learning method. Using the parallel axis theorem, the location of the mass center is parameterized using the cross products of inertia, and that information is extracted from spaceflight maneuver data validating modeling and simulation. Mass inertia properties are discerned, and the mass center is experimentally revealed to be over thirty centimeters away from the assumed locations in two of the three axes. Rotation about one axis is found to be very well balanced, with the center of gravity lying on that axis. Two-to-three orders of magnitude corrections to inertia identification are experimentally demonstrated. Combined-axis three-dimensional maneuvers are found to obscure identification compared with single-axis maneuvering as predicted by the sequel analytic study. Mass center location migrates 36–95% and subsequent validating experiments duplicate the results to within 0.1%. Full article

Snowboard Big Air (SBA), recognized as an Olympic discipline since 2018, emphasizes maneuver difficulty as a key scoring criterion, requiring athletes to integrate technical skill with adaptive responses to dynamic environments in order to perform complex aerial rotations. The takeoff phase is critical, determining both flight trajectory and rotational performance through coordinated lower limb extension and upper body movements. Despite advances in motion analysis technology, quantitative assessment of key takeoff parameters remains limited. This study investigates parameters related to performance, joint kinematics, and rotational kinetics during the SBA takeoff phase to identify key factors for success and provide practical guidance to athletes and coaches. Eleven athletes from the Chinese national snowboard team performed multiple backside tricks (720°, 1080°, 1440°, and 1800°) at an outdoor dry slope with airbag landings. Three-dimensional motion capture with synchronized cameras was used to collect data on performance, joint motion, and rotational kinetics during takeoff. The results showed significant increases in most measured metrics with rising trick difficulty from 720° to 1800°. The findings reveal that elite SBA athletes optimize performance in high-difficulty maneuvers by increasing the moment of inertia, maximizing propulsion, and refining joint kinematics to enhance rotational energy and speed. These results suggest that training should emphasize lower limb power, core and shoulder strength, flexibility, and coordination to maximize performance in advanced maneuvers. Full article

Unlike diesel generators or energy storage systems, photovoltaic (PV) arrays lack inherent rotational inertia and have output limitations due to their operational environmental dependencies. These characteristics restrict their suitability as primary power system backbone components. This study proposes a grid-forming (GF) control strategy for PV inverters in low voltage grid (LVG) using a model predictive control (MPC) approach. The proposed method introduces a novel predictive model accounting for capacitor dynamics to precisely regulate both AC-side output voltage and DC-side voltage. Furthermore, in this paper, P-V droop control replaces the traditional frequency regulation, achieving the real-time balance of DC/AC power and seamless sharing of multiple photovoltaic power sources. By integrating a modified cost function, the controller can flexibly switch between maximum power point tracking (MPPT) mode and power reserve mode according to varying output demands. The proposed strategy can provide advanced frequency stability, MPPT accuracy, and fast dynamic response under rapidly changing solar irradiance and load conditions. Simulation and experimental tests are carried out to validate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy. Full article

Marine diesel engines face persistent challenges in balancing transient black smoke emissions and maneuverability under low-speed conditions due to inherent limitations of single turbocharger systems, such as high inertia and delayed intake response, compounded by control strategies prioritizing steady-state efficiency. To address this gap, this study proposes a dual -turbocharger dynamic matching framework integrated with a speed–pitch synergistic control strategy—the first mechanical-control co-design solution for transient emission suppression. By establishing a λ-opacity correlation model and a multi-physics ship–engine–propeller simulation platform, we demonstrate that the Type-C dual turbocharger reduces rotational inertia by 80%, shortens intake pressure buildup time to 25.8 s (54.7% faster than single turbochargers), and eliminates high-risk black smoke regions (maintaining λ > 1.5). The optimized system reduces the fuel consumption rate by 12.9 g·(kW·h)−1 under extreme loading conditions and decreases the duration of high-risk zones by 74.4–100%. This study provides theoretical and practical support for resolving the trade-off between transient emissions and maneuverability in marine power systems through synergistic innovations in mechanical design and control strategies. The application of fractional calculus in power electronics modeling provides an innovative method for improving inverter performance. This paper presents a three-phase inverter topology with fractional-order LC filter characteristics, analyzes its frequency response, and develops mathematical models in both stationary and rotating reference frames. Based on these models, a dual closed-loop decoupling control strategy for voltage and current is designed to enhance system stability and dynamic performance. In the power control loop, fractional-order virtual synchronous generator control (FOVSG) is employed. Observations show that increasing the fractional-order of the rotor leads to a higher transient frequency variation rate. To address this, an adaptive rotational inertia control scheme is integrated into the FOVSG structure (ADJ-FOVSG), enabling real-time adjustment of inertia to suppress transient frequency fluctuations. Experimental results demonstrate that when the reference active power changes, ADJ-FOVSG effectively suppresses power overshoot. Compared to traditional VSG, ADJ-FOVSG reduces the power regulation time by approximately 34.5% and decreases the peak frequency deviation by approximately 37.2%. Compared to the adaptive rotational inertia control in traditional VSG, ADJ-FOVSG improves regulation time by about 24% and reduces peak frequency deviation by roughly 24.4%. Full article

To address the challenge of virtual synchronous generator (VSG) control technology in simultaneously achieving transient oscillation suppression and steady-state accuracy, as well as the poor anti-interference capability of fixed damping parameters under scenarios such as sudden changes in the short-circuit ratio (SCR), this paper proposes a transient damping optimization VSG control strategy based on a dissipative Hamiltonian neural network (DHNN) adaptive mechanism. Without affecting the original droop characteristics and rotational inertia, a transient damping feedback (TDF) branch is introduced to provide an additional damping ratio for the system to suppress low-frequency oscillations. The TDF control directly acts on the rotor motion equation through active-power low-frequency component feedback, featuring a simple structure without requiring complex computations. A small-signal model was established to quantitatively analyze the oscillation suppression mechanism. Furthermore, the dissipative Hamiltonian neural network (DHNN) was employed to dynamically optimize TDF parameters, ensuring a robust system performance under disturbances. The simulation and experimental results ultimately validated the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy. Full article

The variable-speed operation mode of pumped storage units improves the regulation performance and endows the units with characteristics such as isolation from the power grid, thereby affecting the system stability. This study establishes a detailed mathematical model for the connection of doubly fed induction generator-based variable-speed pumped storage (DFIG-VSPS) to a single-machine infinite bus system under power generation conditions in the synchronous rotation direct-quadrature-zero coordinate system. The introduction of the eigenvalue method to analyze the small-disturbance stability of doubly fed variable-speed pumped storage units and the use of participation factors to calculate the degree of influence of each state variable on the small-disturbance stability of the units are innovations of this study. The participation factor enhances flexibility, continuity, and efficiency in doubly fed variable-speed pumped storage by optimizing dynamic power paths and enabling multi-objective control coordination. While eigenvalue analysis is not new, this study is the first to apply it with participation factors to DFIG-VSPS, addressing gaps in prior simplified models. Furthermore, based on the changes in the characteristic root trajectories, the influence of changes in the speed control system parameters and converter controller parameters on the system stability was determined. Finally, the conclusions obtained were verified through simulation. The results indicate that increasing the time constant of water flow inertia poses a risk of system instability, and the increase in proportional parameters and decrease in integral parameters of the power outer loop controller significantly affect the system stability. Firstly, the Reynolds equation considering gas inertia force is theoretically deduced in the cylindrical coordinate system, and then a mathematical model of aerostatic thrust bearing with three degrees of freedom (3-DOF) is constructed. Firstly, the Reynolds equation considering gas inertia force is theoretically deduced in the cylindrical coordinate system, and then a mathematical model of aerostatic thrust bearing with three degrees of freedom (3-DOF) is constructed. Secondly, the Reynolds equation and velocity control equation are solved by the finite difference method (FDM), and the characteristics of gas pressure and velocity distribution in the gas film under steady-state conditions are revealed. On this basis, in the single-factor analysis, the bearing capacity error and recovery torque error caused by the inertia force term are quantitatively analyzed. It is found that the bearing rotating speed has a significant influence on the inertial force error, and the bearing radius also has a certain influence on the inertial force error, while the initial clearance, gas supply pressure, and torsion angle have relatively little influence on the inertial force error. Finally, in the multi-factor analysis, the sample regression equation of relative error of bearing capacity and relative error of restoring torque is established by using the multiple regression analysis method. By comparing the estimated values with the simulation results, the validity of the constructed regression equation is verified. Full article

This study examines the flow dynamics of synovial fluid within a lubricated knee joint during movement, incorporating the effect of inertia and linear re-absorption at the synovial membrane. The fluid behavior is modeled using a couple-stress fluid framework, which accounts for mechanical phenomena and employs a lubricated membrane. synovial membrane plays a crucial role in reducing drag and enhancing joint lubrication for the formation of a uniform lubrication layer over the cartilage surfaces. The mathematical model of synovial fluid flow through the knee joint presents a set of non-linear partial differential equations solved by a recursive approach and inverse method through the software Mathematica 11. The results indicate that synovial fluid flow generates high pressure and shear stress away from the entry point due to the combined effects of inertial forces, linear re-absorption, and micro-rotation within the couple-stress fluid. Axial flow intensifies at the center of the knee joint during activity in the presence of linear re-absorption and molecular rotation, while transverse flow increases away from the center and near to synovium due to its permeability. These findings provide critical insights for biomedical engineers to quantify pressure and stress distributions in synovial fluid to design artificial joints. Full article
