This study presents a simulation-based damage modeling and fatigue risk assessment of a reusable ceramic matrix composite thruster designed for short-duration, green bipropellant propulsion systems. The thruster is constructed from a fiber-reinforced ultra-high temperature ceramic matrix composite composed of zirconium diboride, silicon carbide, and carbon fibers. Time-resolved thermal and structural simulations are conducted on a validated thruster geometry to characterize the severity of early-stage thermal shock, stress buildup, and potential degradation pathways. Unlike traditional fatigue studies that rely on empirical fatigue constants or Paris-law-based crack-growth models, this work introduces a simulation-derived stress-margin envelope methodology that incorporates ±20% variability in temperature-dependent material strength, offering a physically grounded yet conservative risk estimate. From this, a normalized risk index is derived to evaluate the likelihood of damage initiation in critical regions over the 0–10 s firing window. The results indicate that the convergent throat region experiences a peak thermal gradient rate of approximately 380 K/s, with the normalized thermal shock index exceeding 43. Stress margins in this region collapse by 2.3 s, while margin loss in the flange curvature appears near 8 s. These findings are mapped into green, yellow, and red risk bands to classify operational safety zones. All the results assume no active cooling, representing conservative operating limits. If regenerative or ablative cooling is implemented, these margins would improve significantly. The framework established here enables a transparent, reproducible methodology for evaluating lifetime safety in ceramic propulsion nozzles and serves as a foundational tool for fatigue-resilient component design in green space engines. Many low-temperature applications, such as rocket engines and liquefied natural gas (LNG) transport pumps, necessitate ultra-low-temperature operational environments. In these conditions, the properties of lubricating oils and greases are significantly influenced by temperature, leading to the widespread adoption of solid lubrication. Currently, there is no international research regarding the influence of bearing coatings on the subsurface stress distribution in raceways. The Lundberg–Palmgren (L-P) theory states that subsurface stress variations govern bearing lifespan. Therefore, this paper utilizes existing formulas and Python programming to calculate the subsurface stress field of the inner raceway in a MoS2 solid-lubricated angular contact ball bearing. Furthermore, it analyzes the impacts of factors such as coating material properties, slide-to-roll ratio, traction coefficient, and load on its subsurface stress field. The results reveal that for solid-lubricated ball bearings, as the load increases, the maximum subsurface stress shifts closer to the center of the contact area, and the maximum subsurface shear stress becomes more concentrated. As the traction coefficient increases, the stress on the XZ-plane side increases and its position moves closer to the surface, while the opposite trend is observed on the other side. Additionally, the maximum value of the subsurface von Mises stress is approximately 0.64P0, and the maximum value of the orthogonal shear stress component τyz in the subsurface is approximately 0.25P0. Experimental research was conducted to characterize the ignition delay time and combustion performance of non-toxic reactants as a possible replacement for highly toxic fuels, such as hydrazine. The liquid fuel and oxidizer were N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) and white fuming nitric acid (WFNA), respectively. The hypergolic ignition delay of the reactants was determined using 100% TMEDA with either >90% or >99.5% WFNA that was distilled, titrated, and droplet-tested in a laboratory setting while controlling the parameters that affect the quality of the yielded product. It was observed that >90% WFNA had three times longer average ignition delay than >99.5% WFNA with both mixtures producing ignition delay times less than 20 ms. Based upon the demonstrated hypergolic droplet test results, a fluid delivery feed system and hypergolic heavyweight bipropellant rocket engine were designed and fabricated to characterize the combustion efficiency of these non-toxic reactants. The rocket injector and characteristic length differed while operating under similar flow conditions to evaluate combustion efficiency. Results demonstrated similar engine performance between both cases of WFNA with improvements of over 30% in combustion efficiency with increased characteristic length. To meet the growing demand for space launches and overcome the limitations of land-based launches, the scientific research community is committed to developing safer and more flexible offshore rocket launch technologies. Their core carriers—marine platforms—are directly exposed to the dynamic and variable marine environment. The complex coupling effects of wind, waves, and currents impose severe challenges upon these platforms, causing complex phenomena such as severe rocking. These phenomena pose severe threats to and significantly interfere with the stability and normal execution of offshore rocket launch operations. This study employs CFD simulation software to analyze liquid sloshing within a cylindrical tank, both with and without baffles. Following validation of the natural frequency, the analysis focuses on the suppression effect of different baffle positions and configurations on tank sloshing. The numerical simulation results indicate the following: Incorporating baffles alters the natural frequency of liquid sloshing within the tank and effectively suppresses the free surface motion. The suppression of the wave surface motion improves as the baffle is positioned closer to the free surface and as the number of perforations in the baffle increases. However, when the number of perforations exceeds a certain threshold, further increasing it yields negligible improvement in the suppression of the sloshing wave surface motion. Full article

Fin-stabilized guided rockets exhibit ballistic characteristics such as low initial velocity, high flight altitude, and long flight duration, which render their impact point accuracy and flight stability highly susceptible to the influence of wind. In this paper, the four-dimensional nonlinear angular motion equations describing the changes in attack angle and the law of axis swing of a dual-spin rocket are established, and the phase trajectory and equilibrium point stability characteristics of the nonlinear angular motion system under windy conditions are analyzed. Aiming at the problem that the equilibrium point of the angular motion system cannot be solved analytically with the change in wind speed, a phase trajectory projection sequence method based on the Poincaré cross-section and stroboscopic mapping is proposed to analyze the effect of wind on the angular motion bifurcation characteristics of a dual-spin rocket. The possible instability of angular motion caused by nonlinear aerodynamics under strong wind conditions is explored. This study is of reference significance for the launch control and aerodynamic design of guided rockets in complex environments. Full article

Hydrazine, a highly toxic and reactive compound widely used as rocket fuel, poses significant environmental and health risks, particularly in long-term space missions. This study investigates the cometabolic capacity of Chlorella vulgaris and seven extremophilic Bacillus spp. strains—isolated from the arid Dead Sea region—to tolerate and degrade hydrazine at concentrations up to 25 ppm. The microalga C. vulgaris reduced hydrazine levels by 81% within 24 h at 20 ppm, while the Bacillus isolates achieved an average reduction of 45% over 120 h. Identified strains included B. licheniformis, B. cereus, and B. atrophaeus. Co-culture experiments demonstrated that C. vulgaris and B. cereus (isolate ISO-36) stably coexisted without antagonistic effects, suggesting a synergistic detoxification interaction. Flow cytometry revealed that most bacteria transitioned into spores under stress, highlighting a survival adaptation. Titanium, representing a biocompatible material common in aerospace hardware, did not inhibit microbial growth or hydrazine degradation. These findings underscore the potential of Dead Sea-derived microbial consortia for cometabolic hydrazine detoxification and support the feasibility of converting spacecraft components into functional photobioreactors. This approach offers dual-use benefits for space missions and industrial wastewater treatment. Future studies should investigate degradation pathways, stress resilience, and bioreactor scale-up. Solid propellant grain, as a typical polymer, are the thrust generation devices and core load-bearing components of solid rocket motor (SRM) and are also known as SRM grain. They are constantly exposed to extreme service environments such as high temperatures, high pressures, and dynamic shocks, and have a relatively high failure rate in the field use of SRM. Its life and reliability are the shortcomings that restrict the improvement of weapons and equipment capability in China at present. This paper summarizes the typical fault types of SRM grain at present, and compares and analyzes the research progress of reliability design and analysis technology, reliability optimization technology, life test technology and reliability evaluation technology of SRM grain at home and abroad; This paper analyzes the deficiencies and reasons in the research and application of SRM grain reliability technology in China, and points out the technical difficulties and challenges faced by the integrated design of performance and reliability of SRM independent innovation design according to the needs of the forward research and development system of SRM. Based on the existing design level and industrial foundation in China, the basic research suggestions that should be carried out to consolidate the design ability of SRM grain in China are given. Low regression rate is the most critical issue for the development and application of hybrid rocket motors (HRMs). Paraffin-based fuels are potential candidates for HRMs due to their high regression rates but adding polymers to improve strength results in insufficient regression rates for HRMs applications. In this work, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling and analysis were used to investigate the mixing and combustion of gaseous fuels and oxidizers in HRMs for various fuel grains and injector combinations. In addition, the regression rate characteristics and combustion efficiency were evaluated using a ground test. The results showed that the swirling flow with both high mixing intensity and high velocity could be formed by using the swirl injector. The highest mixing degree attained for the star-swirl grain and swirl injector was 86%. The reported combustion efficiency calculated by the CFD model attained a maximum of 93% at the nozzle throat. In addition, a spatially averaged regression rate of 1.40 mm·s−1 was achieved for the star-swirl grain and swirl injector combination when the mass flux of N2O was 89.94 kg·m−2·s−1. This is around 191% higher than the case of non-swirling flow. However, there were obvious local regression rate differences between the root of the star and the slot. The regression rate increase was accompanied by a decrease in the combustion efficiency for the strong swirling flow condition due to the remarkable higher mass flow rate of gasified fuels. It was shown that the nano-sized aluminum was unfavorable for the combustion efficiency, especially under extreme fuel-rich conditions. Full article

Liquid rocket engines occasionally experience abnormal phenomena with unclear mechanisms, causing difficulty in design improvements. To address the above issue, a data mining method that combines ante hoc explainability, post hoc explainability, and prediction accuracy is proposed. For ante hoc explainability, a feature selection method driven by data, models, and domain knowledge is established. Global sensitivity analysis of a physical model combined with expert knowledge and data correlation is utilized to establish the correlations between different types of parameters. Then a two-stage optimization approach is proposed to obtain the best feature subset and train the prediction model. For the post hoc explainability, the partial dependence plot (PDP) and SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) analysis are used to discover complex patterns between input features and the dependent variable. The effectiveness of the hybrid feature selection method and its applicability under different noise combinations are validated using synthesized data from a high-fidelity simulation model of a pressurization system. Then the analysis of the causes of a large vibration phenomenon in an active engine shows that the prediction model has good accuracy, and the feature selection results have a clear mechanism and align with domain knowledge, providing both accuracy and interpretability. The proposed method shows significant potential for data mining in complex aerospace products. Full article

This study investigates the energy performance of paraffin-based hybrid fuels enhanced with potassium nitrate (KNO3), ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3), aluminum (Al), titanium (Ti), and stearic acid additives. The fuels were evaluated using thermochemical calculations via ProPEP3 Version 1.0.3.0 software, revealing significant improvements in specific impulse (Isp) and combustion temperature. While formulations with nitrates and aluminum exhibited noticeable increases in combustion efficiency and thermal output, titanium-containing mixtures provided moderate improvements. Stearic acid improved fuel processability and provided a stable burning profile without significant energy penalties. These findings demonstrate that suitable combinations of additives can substantially improve the energy output of paraffin-based hybrid fuels, making them more viable for aerospace propulsion applications. Increased market demand for plant herbs has prompted growers to ensure a continuous and assured supply of superior nutritional quality over the years. Apart from the nutritional value, culinary herbs contain phytochemical benefits that can improve human health. However, a significant amount of research has focused on enhancing yield, frequently overlooking the impact of production practices on the antioxidant and phytonutritional content of the produce. Thus, the study aimed to evaluate the yield, phytonutrients, and essential mineral profiling in selected aromatic herbs and their intricate role in nutritional quality when grown under different production systems. Five selected aromatic herbs (coriander, rocket, fennel, basil, and moss-curled parsley) were evaluated at harvest when grown under three production systems: in a gravel-film technique (GFT) hydroponic system and in soil, both under the 40% white shade-net structure, as well as in a soilless medium using sawdust under a non-temperature-controlled plastic tunnel (NTC). The phytonutritional quality properties (total phenolic, flavonoids, β-carotene-linoleic acid, and condensed tannins contents) as well as 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) were assessed using spectrophotometry, while vitamin C and β-carotene were analyzed using HPLC-PDA, and leaf mineral content was evaluated using ICP-OES (Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry). The results show that the health benefits vary greatly owing to the particular culinary herb. The fresh leaf mass (yield) of coriander, parsley, and rocket was not significantly affected by the production system, whereas basil was high in soil cultivation, followed by GFT. Fennel had a high yield in the GFT system compared to in-soil and in-soilless cultivation. The highest levels of vitamin C were found in basil leaves grown in GFT and in soil compared to the soilless medium. The amount of total phenolic and flavonoid compounds, β-carotene, β-carotene-linoleic acid, and DPPH, were considerably high in soil cultivation, except on condensed tannins compared to the GFT and soilless medium, which could be a result of Photosynthetic Active Radiation (PAR) values (683 μmol/m2/s) and not favoring the accumulation of tannins. Overall, the mineral content was greatly influenced by the production system. Leaf calcium and magnesium contents were highly accumulated in rockets grown in the soilless medium and the GFT hydroponic system. The results have highlighted that growing environmental conditions significantly impact the accumulation of health-promoting phytonutrients in aromatic herbs. Some have positive ramifications, while others have negative ramifications. As a result, growers should prioritize in-soil production systems over GFT (under the shade-net) and soilless cultivation (under NTC) to produce aromatic herbs to improve the functional benefits and customer health. Mid-altitude sounding rockets are essential for atmospheric research and suborbital experimentation, where aerodynamic optimization and structural integrity are crucial for achieving targeted apogees. This study uses OpenRocket v23.09 for preliminary flight performance prediction and SolidWorks 2024 to integrate aerodynamic and structural analyses through Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA). SolidWorks Flow Simulation and SolidWorks Simulation are used to assess how nose cone and fin geometries, as well as thermal deformation, influence flight performance. Among nine tested configurations, the ogive nose cone with trapezoidal fins achieved the highest simulated apogee of 2639 m, with drag coefficients of 0.480 (OpenRocket) and 0.401 (SolidWorks Flow Simulation). Thermal–structural analysis revealed a maximum nose tip displacement of 0.7249 mm for the rocket with the ogive nose cone, leading to an increasing drag coefficient of 0.404. However, thermal deformation of the ellipsoid nose cone led to a reduction in the drag coefficient from 0.419 to 0.399, even though it exhibited a slightly higher maximum displacement of 0.7443 mm. Mesh independence was confirmed with outlet velocity deviations below 1% across refinements. These results highlight the importance of integrated CFD–FEA approaches, geometric optimization, and material resilience for enhancing the aerodynamic performance of subsonic sounding rockets. The increasing demand for versatile and sustainable propulsion systems has intensified research into green propellants and advanced thrust modulation technologies. This study presents the development and testing of a throttleable rocket engine utilizing 98% hydrogen peroxide by mass as the oxidizer and butyl alcohol (as isomers n-butanol) as the fuel. Combining the environmental benefits of green propellants with variable thrust capabilities, the system addresses the challenges of modern space missions. Butyl alcohol was selected for its low toxicity, safety, storability, and favorable combustion performance, making it a strong candidate for future applications. The engine was designed to deliver a nominal thrust of 6 kN with the capability to throttle down to 1.2 kN. Experiments investigated the effects of pintle injector positions, supply pressures, and combustion chamber parameters on performance. Results demonstrated stable and efficient combustion across a wide operating range, highlighting the critical role of injector design and chamber geometry in ensuring consistent thrust and combustion efficiency. This research validates the potential of hydrogen peroxide and butyl alcohol as a sustainable propellant pair, particularly for planetary landers requiring precise thrust modulation for controlled descent. It marks a significant step in advancing sustainable propulsion technologies, contributing to the future of planetary exploration and interplanetary mission capabilities. Full article

Duplex ball bearings are common components in space satellite mechanisms, and their behaviour impacts the overall performance and reliability of these systems. During rocket launches, these bearings suffer high vibrational loads, making their dynamic response essential for their survival. To predict the dynamic behaviour under vibration, simulations and experimental tests are performed. However, published models for space applications fail to capture the variations observed in test responses. This study presents a multi-degree-of-freedom nonlinear multibody model of a hard-preloaded duplex space ball bearing, particularized for this work to the case in which the outer ring is attached to a shaker and the inner ring to a test dummy mass. The model incorporates the Hunt and Crossley contact damping formulation and employs quaternions to accurately represent rotational dynamics. The simulated model response is validated against previously published axial test data, and its response under step, sine, and random excitations is analysed both in the case of radial and axial excitation. The results reveal key insights into frequency evolution, stress distribution, gapping phenomena, and response amplification, providing a deeper understanding of the dynamic performance of space-grade ball bearings. Composition Design of a Novel High-Temperature Titanium Alloy Based on Data Augmentation Machine Learning

The application fields of high-temperature titanium alloys are mainly concentrated in the aerospace, defense and military industries, such as the high-temperature parts of rocket and aircraft engines, missile cases, tail rudders, etc., which can greatly reduce the weight of aircraft while resisting high temperatures. However, traditional high-temperature titanium alloys containing multiple types of elements (more than six) have a complex impact on the solidification, deformation, and phase transformation processes of the alloys, which greatly increases the difficulty of casting and deformation manufacturing of aerospace and military components. Therefore, developing low-component high-temperature titanium alloys suitable for hot processing and forming is urgent. This study used data augmentation (Gaussian noise) to expedite the development of a novel quinary high-temperature titanium alloy. Utilizing data augmentation, the generalization abilities of four machine learning models (XGBoost, RF, AdaBoost, Lasso) were effectively improved, with the XGBoost model demonstrating superior prediction accuracy (with an R2 value of 0.94, an RMSE of 53.31, and an MAE of 42.93 in the test set). Based on this model, a novel Ti-7.2Al-1.8Mo-2.0Nb-0.4Si (wt.%) alloy was designed and experimentally validated. The UTS of the alloy at 600 °C was 629 MPa, closely aligning with the value (649 MPa) predicted by the model, with an error of 3.2%. Compared to as-cast Ti1100 and Ti6242S alloy (both containing six elements), the novel quinary alloy has considerable high-temperature (600 °C) mechanical properties and fewer components. The microstructure analysis revealed that the designed alloy was an α+β type alloy, featuring a typical Widmanstätten structure. The fracture form of the alloy was a mixture of brittle and ductile fracture at both room and high temperatures. Full article
