Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication is a fundamental technology in the development of intelligent transportation systems, encompassing vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), infrastructure (V2I), and pedestrian (V2P) communications. This technology enables connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) to interact with their surroundings, significantly enhancing road safety, traffic efficiency, and driving comfort. However, as V2X communication becomes more widespread, it becomes a prime target for adversarial and persistent cyberattacks, posing significant threats to the security and privacy of CAVs. These challenges are compounded by the dynamic nature of vehicular networks and the stringent requirements for real-time data processing and decision-making. Much research is on using novel technologies such as machine learning, blockchain, and cryptography to secure V2X communications. Our survey highlights the security challenges faced by V2X communications and assesses current ML and blockchain-based solutions, revealing significant gaps and opportunities for improvement. Specifically, our survey focuses on studies integrating ML, blockchain, and multi-access edge computing (MEC) for low latency, robust, and dynamic security in V2X networks. Based on our findings, we outline a conceptual framework that synergizes ML, blockchain, and MEC to address some of the identified security challenges. This integrated framework demonstrates the potential for real-time anomaly detection, decentralized data sharing, and enhanced system scalability. The survey concludes by identifying future research directions and outlining the remaining challenges for securing V2X communications in the face of evolving threats. Full article

Urban population growth is intensifying pressure on mobility systems, with road transportation contributing to environmental and sustainability challenges. Policymakers must navigate complex uncertainties in addressing rising mobility demand while pursuing sustainability goals. Advanced technologies offer promise, but their real-world effectiveness in urban contexts remains underexplored. This meta-review comprised three complementary studies: a broad analysis of sustainable mobility with Norwegian case studies, and systematic literature reviews on digital twins and Big Data/AI applications in urban mobility, covering the period of 2019–2024. Using structured criteria, we synthesised findings from 72 relevant articles to identify major trends, limitations, and opportunities. The findings show that mobility policies often prioritise technocentric solutions that unintentionally hinder sustainability goals. Digital twins show potential for traffic simulation, urban planning, and public engagement, while machine learning techniques support traffic forecasting and multimodal integration. However, persistent challenges include data interoperability, model validation, and insufficient stakeholder engagement. We identify a hierarchy of mobility modes where public transit and active mobility outperform private vehicles in sustainability and user satisfaction. Integrating electrification and automation and sharing models with data-informed governance can enhance urban liveability. We propose actionable pathways leveraging Big Data and AI, outlining the roles of various stakeholders in advancing sustainable urban mobility futures. Full article

The automatic detection of traffic accidents plays an increasingly vital role in advancing intelligent traffic monitoring systems and improving road safety. Leveraging computer vision techniques offers a promising solution, enabling rapid, reliable, and automated identification of accidents, thereby significantly reducing emergency response times. This study proposes an enhanced version of the YOLO11 architecture, termed YOLO11-AMF. The proposed model integrates a Mamba-Like Linear Attention (MLLA) mechanism, an Asymptotic Feature Pyramid Network (AFPN), and a novel Focaler-IoU loss function to optimize traffic accident detection performance under complex and diverse conditions. The MLLA module introduces efficient linear attention to improve contextual representation, while the AFPN adopts an asymptotic feature fusion strategy to enhance the expressiveness of the detection head. The Focaler-IoU further refines bounding box regression for improved localization accuracy. To evaluate the proposed model, a custom dataset of traffic accident images was constructed. Experimental results demonstrate that the enhanced model achieves precision, recall, mAP50, and mAP50–95 scores of 96.5%, 82.9%, 90.0%, and 66.0%, respectively, surpassing the baseline YOLO11n by 6.5%, 6.0%, 6.3%, and 6.3% on these metrics. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed enhancements and suggest the model’s potential for robust and accurate traffic accident detection within real-world conditions. This paper introduces a robust and efficient Localized Spline-based Path-Planning (LSPP) algorithm designed to enhance autonomous vehicle navigation on highways. The LSPP approach prioritizes smooth maneuvering, obstacle avoidance, passenger comfort, and adherence to road constraints, including lane boundaries, through optimized trajectory generation using quintic spline functions and a dynamic speed profile. Leveraging real-time data from the vehicle’s sensor fusion module, the LSPP algorithm accurately interprets the positions of surrounding vehicles and obstacles, creating a safe, dynamically feasible path that is relayed to the Model Predictive Control (MPC) track-following module for precise execution. The theoretical distinction of LSPP lies in its modular integration of: (1) a finite state machine (FSM)-based decision-making layer that selects maneuver-specific goal states (e.g., keep lane, change lane left/right); (2) quintic spline optimization to generate smooth, jerk-minimized, and kinematically consistent trajectories; (3) a multi-objective cost evaluation framework that ranks competing paths according to safety, comfort, and efficiency; and (4) a closed-loop MPC controller to ensure real-time trajectory execution with robustness. Extensive simulations conducted in diverse highway scenarios and traffic conditions demonstrate LSPP’s effectiveness in delivering smooth, safe, and computationally efficient trajectories. Results show consistent improvements in lane-keeping accuracy, collision avoidance, enhanced materials wear performance, and planning responsiveness compared to traditional path-planning methods. These findings confirm LSPP’s potential as a practical and high-performance solution for autonomous highway driving. Full article

Accurate side road detection is essential for traffic management, urban planning, and vehicle navigation. However, existing research mainly focuses on road network construction, lane extraction, and intersection identification, while fine-grained side road detection remains underexplored. Therefore, this study proposes a road segment-level side road detection method based on crowdsourced trajectory data: First, considering the geometric and dynamic characteristics of trajectories, SRDet introduces a trajectory lane-change pattern recognition method based on mutation intervals to distinguish the heterogeneity of lane-change behaviors between main and side roads. Secondly, combining geometric features with spatial statistical theory, SRDet constructs multimodal features for trajectories and road segments, and proposes a potential side road segment classification model based on random forests to achieve precise detection of side road segments. Finally, based on mutation intervals and potential side road segments, SRDet utilizes density peak clustering to identify main and side road access points, completing the fitting of side roads. Experiments were conducted using 2021 Beijing trajectory data. The results show that SRDet achieves precision and recall rates of 84.6% and 86.8%, respectively. This demonstrates the superior performance of SRDet in side road detection across different areas, providing support for the precise updating of urban road navigation information. Full article

The integration of autonomous vehicles (AVs) into urban transportation systems has significant potential to enhance traffic efficiency and reduce environmental impacts. This study evaluates the impact of different AV penetration scenarios (0%, 10%, 30%, 50%) on traffic performance and carbon emissions along Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Road in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Using microscopic simulation (SUMO) based on real-world datasets, we assess key performance indicators such as travel time, stop frequency, speed, and CO2 emissions. Results indicate notable improvements with increasing AV deployment, including up to 25.5% reduced travel time and 14.6% lower emissions at 50% AV penetration. Coordinated AV behavior was approximated using adjusted simulation parameters and Python-based APIs, effectively modeling vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I), and vehicle-to-network (V2N) communications. These findings highlight the benefits of harmonized AV–human vehicle interactions, providing a scalable and data-driven framework applicable to smart urban mobility planning. Full article

Traffic conditions are a key factor in our society, contributing to quality of life and the economy, as well as access to professional, educational, and health resources. This emphasizes the need for a reliable road network to facilitate traffic fluidity across the nation and improve mobility. Reaching these characteristics demands good traffic volume prediction methods, not only in the short term but also in the long term, which helps design transportation strategies and road planning. However, most of the research has focused on short-term prediction, applied mostly to short-trip distances, while effective long-term forecasting, which has become a challenging issue in recent years, is lacking. The team proposes a traffic prediction method that leverages K-means clustering, long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network, and Fourier transform (FT) for long-term traffic prediction. The proposed method was evaluated on a real-world dataset from the U.S. Travel Monitoring Analysis System (TMAS) database, which enhances practical relevance and potential impact on transportation planning and management. The forecasting performance is evaluated with real-world traffic flow data in the state of California, in the western USA. Results show good forecasting accuracy on traffic trends and counts over a one-year period, capturing periodicity and variation. Full article

Wildlife–vehicle collisions (WVCs) remain a significant cause of animal mortality worldwide, particularly in regions experiencing rapid road network expansion. During the COVID-19 pandemic, a number of studies reported decreased WVC rates, attributing this trend to reduced traffic volumes. However, the validity of the simplified assumption that “fewer vehicles means fewer collisions” remains underexplored from a mechanistic perspective. This study aims to reevaluate that assumption using two simulation-based models that incorporate both the physics of vehicle movement and behavioral parameters of road-crossing animals. Employing an inverse modeling approach with quasi-realistic traffic scenarios, we quantify how vehicle speed, spacing, and animal hesitation affect collision likelihood. The results indicate that approximately 10% of modeled cases contradict the prevailing assumption, with collision risk peaking at intermediate traffic densities. These findings challenge common interpretations of WVC dynamics and underscore the need for more refined, behaviorally informed mitigation strategies. We suggest that integrating such approaches into road planning and conservation policy—particularly under the European Union’s ‘Vision Zero’ framework—could help reduce wildlife mortality more effectively in future scenarios, including potential pandemics or mobility disruptions. This study examines the safety and cost-effectiveness of implementing shoulder rumble strips (SRS) and road lighting on Saudi Arabian freeways, providing insights into their roles in fostering sustainable transport systems. By leveraging the Highway Safety Manual (HSM) framework, this research develops localized Crash Modification Factors (CMFs) for these interventions, ensuring evidence-based and context-specific evaluations. Data were collected for two periods—pre-pandemic (2017–2019) and post-pandemic (2021–2022). For each period, we obtained traffic crash records from the Saudi Highway Patrol database, traffic volume data from the Ministry of Transport and Logistic Services’ automated count stations, and roadway characteristics and pavement-condition metrics from the National Road Safety Center. The findings reveal that SRS reduces fatal and injury run-off-road crashes by 52.7% (CMF = 0.473) with a benefit–cost ratio of 14.12, highlighting their high cost-effectiveness. Road lighting, focused on nighttime crash reduction, decreases such crashes by 24% (CMF = 0.760), with a benefit–cost ratio of 1.25, although the adoption of solar-powered lighting systems offers potential for greater sustainability gains and a higher benefit–cost ratio. These interventions align with global sustainability goals by enhancing road safety, reducing the socio-economic burden of crashes, and promoting the integration of green technologies. This study not only provides actionable insights for achieving KSA Vision 2030’s target of improved road safety but also demonstrates how engineering solutions can be harmonized with sustainability objectives to advance equitable, efficient, and environmentally responsible transportation systems. Large-scale events, such as festivals and public gatherings, pose serious problems in terms of traffic congestion, slow transaction processing, and security risks to transportation planning. This study proposes a blockchain-based solution for enhancing the efficiency and security of intelligent transport systems (ITS) by utilizing state channels and rollups. Throughput is optimized, enabling transaction speeds of 800 to 3500 transactions per second (TPS) and delays of 5 to 1.5 s. Prevent data tampering, strengthen security, and enhance data integrity from 89% to 99.999%, as well as encryption efficacy from 90% to 98%. Furthermore, our system reduces congestion, optimizes vehicle movement, and shares real-time, secure data with stakeholders. Practical applications include fast and safe road toll payments, faster public transit ticketing, improved emergency response coordination, and enhanced urban mobility. The decentralized blockchain helps maintain trust among users, transportation authorities, and event organizers. Our approach extends beyond large-scale events and proposes a path toward ubiquitous, Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven decision-making in a broader urban transit network, informing future operations in dynamic traffic optimization. This study demonstrates the potential of blockchain to create more intelligent, more secure, and scalable transportation systems, which will help reduce urban mobility inefficiencies and contribute to the development of resilient smart cities. Background/Objectives: Aging is often accompanied by physical and cognitive decline, affecting older adults’ mobility. Virtual reality (VR) offers innovative opportunities to safely practice everyday tasks, such as street crossing. This study was designed as a feasibility and pilot study to explore acceptance, usability, and preliminary effects of a VR-based road-crossing intervention for older adults. It investigates the use of virtual reality (VR) as an innovative training tool to support senior citizens in safely navigating everyday challenges such as crossing roads. By providing an immersive environment with realistic traffic scenarios, VR enables participants to practice in a safe and controlled setting, minimizing the risks associated with real-world road traffic. Methods: A VR training application called “Wegfest” was developed to facilitate targeted road-crossing practice. The application simulates various scenarios commonly encountered by older adults, such as crossing busy streets or waiting at traffic lights. The study applied a single-group pre-post design. Outcomes included the Timed Up and Go test (TUG), Falls Efficacy Scale-International (FES-I), and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Results: The development process of “Wegfest” demonstrates how a highly realistic street environment can be created for VR-based road-crossing training. Significant improvements were found in the Timed Up and Go test (p = 0.002, d = 0.784) and fall-related self-efficacy (FES-I, p = 0.005). No change was observed in cognitive function (MoCA, p = 0.56). Participants reported increased subjective safety (p < 0.001). Discussion: The development of the VR training application “Wegfest” highlights the feasibility of creating realistic virtual environments for skill development. By leveraging immersive technology, both physical and cognitive skills required for road-crossing can be effectively trained. The findings suggest that “Wegfest” has the potential to enhance the mobility and safety of older adults in road traffic through immersive experiences and targeted training interventions. Conclusions: As an innovative training tool, the VR application not only provides an engaging and enjoyable learning environment but also fosters self-confidence and independence among older adults in traffic settings. Regular training within the virtual world enables senior citizens to continuously refine their skills, ultimately improving their quality of life. Full article

Xylosalsola chiwensis (Popov) Akhani & Roalson is listed in the Red Data Book of Kazakhstan as a rare species with a limited distribution, occurring in small populations in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. The aim of this study is to deepen the understanding of the ecological conditions of its habitats, the floristic composition of its associated plant communities, the species’ morphological and anatomical characteristics, and its molecular phylogeny, as well as to identify the main threats to its survival. The ecological conditions of the X. chiwensis habitats include coastal sandy plains and the slopes of chinks and denudation plains with gray–brown desert soils and bozyngens on the Mangyshlak Peninsula and the Ustyurt Plateau at altitudes ranging from −3 to 270 m above sea level. The species is capable of surviving in arid conditions (less than 100 mm of annual precipitation) and under extreme temperatures (air temperatures exceeding 45 °C and soil surface temperatures above 65 °C). In X. chiwensis communities, we recorded 53 species of vascular plants. Anthropogenic factors associated with livestock grazing, industrial disturbances, and off-road vehicle traffic along an unregulated network of dirt roads have been identified as contributing to population decline and the potential extinction of the species under conditions of unsustainable land use. The morphometric traits of X. chiwensis could be used for taxonomic analysis and for identifying diagnostic morphological characteristics to distinguish between species of Xylosalsola. The most taxonomically valuable characteristics include the fruit diameter (with wings) and the cone-shaped structure length, as they differ consistently between species and exhibit relatively low variability. Anatomical adaptations to arid conditions were observed, including a well-developed hypodermis, which is indicative of a water-conserving strategy. The moderate photosynthetic activity, reflected by a thinner palisade mesophyll layer, may be associated with reduced photosynthetic intensity, which is compensated for through structural mechanisms for water conservation. The flow cytometry analysis revealed a genome size of 2.483 ± 0.191 pg (2n/4x = 18), and the phylogenetic analysis confirmed the placement of X. chiwensis within the tribe Salsoleae of the subfamily Salsoloideae, supporting its taxonomic distinctness. To support the conservation of this rare species, measures are proposed to expand the area of the Ustyurt Nature Reserve through the establishment of cluster sites. Full article

Traffic congestion poses a significant challenge to modern urban environments, impacting both driver satisfaction and road safety. This paper investigates the effectiveness of a smart traffic light system (STL), a solution developed under the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) initiative by the Ministry of Works Malaysia, to address these issues in Malaysia. The system integrates a network of sensors, AI-enabled cameras, and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology to gather real-time data on traffic volume and vehicle classification at congested intersections. This data is utilized to dynamically adjust traffic light timings, prioritizing traffic flow on heavily congested roads while maintaining safety standards. To evaluate the system’s performance, a comprehensive study was conducted at a selected intersection. Traffic patterns were automatically analyzed using camera systems, and the performance of the STL was compared to that of traditional traffic signal systems. The average travel time from the start to the end intersection was measured and compared. Preliminary findings indicate that the STL significantly reduces travel times and improves overall traffic flow at the intersection, with average travel time reductions ranging from 7.1% to 28.6%, depending on site-specific factors. While further research is necessary to quantify the full extent of the system’s impact, these initial results demonstrate the promising potential of STL technology to enhance urban mobility and more efficient and safer roadways by moving beyond traditional traffic signal functionalities. Heavy Metals in Leafy Vegetables and Soft Fruits from Allotment Gardens in the Warsaw Agglomeration: Health Risk Assessment

Vegetables and fruits grown in urban areas pose a potential threat to human health due to contamination with heavy metals (HMs). This study aimed to identify and quantify the concentrations of heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd) in tomatoes, leafy vegetables, and fruits collected from 16 allotment gardens (AGs) located in Warsaw. A total of 112 samples were analyzed (72 vegetable and 40 fruit samples). Vegetables from AGs accumulated significantly higher levels of HMs than fruits. Leafy vegetables, particularly those cultivated near high-traffic roads, exhibited markedly elevated levels of Pb, Cd, and Zn compared to those grown in peripheral areas. Lead concentrations exceeded permissible limits by six to twelve times, cadmium by one to thirteen times, and zinc by 0.7 to 2.4 times. Due to high levels of Pb and Cd, tomatoes should not be cultivated in urban environments. Regardless of location, only trace amounts of HMs were detected in fruits. The greatest health risk is associated with the consumption of leafy vegetables. Lettuce should be considered an indicator plant for assessing environmental contamination. The obtained Hazard Index (HI) values indicate that only the tested fruits are safe for consumption. Meanwhile, the values of the Hazard Quotient (HQ) indicate no health risk associated with the consumption of lettuce, cherries, and red currants. Among the analyzed elements, Pb showed a higher potential health risk than other metals. This study emphasizes the need for continuous monitoring of HM levels in urban soils and the establishment of baseline values for public health purposes. Remediation of contaminated soils and the implementation of safer agricultural practices are recommended to reduce the exposure of urban populations to the risks associated with the consumption of contaminated produce. In addition, the safety of fruits and vegetables grown in urban areas is influenced by the location of the AGs and the level of industrialization of the agglomeration. Therefore, the safety assessment of plant products derived from AGs should be monitored on a continuous basis, especially in vegetables. Full article

Traditional collision risk warning methods primarily focus on vehicle-to-vehicle collisions, neglecting conflicts between vehicles and vulnerable road users (VRUs) such as pedestrians, while the difficulty in predicting pedestrian trajectories further limits the accuracy of collision warnings. To address this problem, this study proposes a vehicle-to-everything-based (V2X) multi-fusion vehicle–pedestrian collision warning method, aiming to enhance the traffic safety protection for VRUs. First, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle aerial imagery combined with the YOLOv7 and DeepSort algorithms is utilized to achieve target detection and tracking at unsignalized intersections, thereby constructing a vehicle–pedestrian interaction trajectory dataset. Subsequently, key foundational modules for collision warning are developed, including the vehicle trajectory module, the pedestrian trajectory module, and the risk detection module. The vehicle trajectory module is based on a kinematic model, while the pedestrian trajectory module adopts an Attention-based Social GAN (AS-GAN) model that integrates a generative adversarial network with a soft attention mechanism, enhancing prediction accuracy through a dual-discriminator strategy involving adversarial loss and displacement loss. The risk detection module applies an elliptical buffer zone algorithm to perform dynamic spatial collision determination. Finally, a collision warning framework based on the Monte Carlo (MC) method is developed. Multiple sampled pedestrian trajectories are generated by applying Gaussian perturbations to the predicted mean trajectory and combined with vehicle trajectories and collision determination results to identify potential collision targets. Furthermore, the driver perception–braking time (TTM) is incorporated to estimate the joint collision probability and assist in warning decision-making. Simulation results show that the proposed warning method achieves an accuracy of 94.5% at unsignalized intersections, outperforming traditional Time-to-Collision (TTC) and braking distance models, and effectively reducing missed and false warnings, thereby improving pedestrian traffic safety at unsignalized intersections.
