Ocean energy is an abundant, eco-friendly, and renewable energy resource that is useful for powering sensor networks connected to the maritime Internet of Things (MIoT). These sensor networks can be used to measure different marine environmental parameters that affect ocean infrastructure integrity and harm marine ecosystems. This ocean energy can be harnessed through hybrid nanogenerators that combine triboelectric nanogenerators, electromagnetic generators, piezoelectric nanogenerators, and pyroelectric generators. These nanogenerators have advantages such as high-power density, robust design, easy operating principle, and cost-effective fabrication. However, the performance of these nanogenerators can be affected by the wear of their main components, reduction of wave frequency and amplitude, extreme corrosion, and sea storms. To address these challenges, future research on hybrid nanogenerators must improve their mechanical strength, including materials and packages with anti-corrosion coatings. Herein, we present recent advances in the performance of different hybrid nanogenerators to harvest ocean energy, including various transduction mechanisms. Furthermore, this review reports potential applications of hybrid nanogenerators to power devices in marine infrastructure or serve as self-powered MIoT monitoring sensor networks. This review discusses key challenges that must be addressed to achieve the commercial success of these nanogenerators, regarding design strategies with advanced simulation models or digital twins. Also, these strategies must incorporate new materials that improve the performance, reliability, and integration of future nanogenerator array systems. Thus, optimized hybrid nanogenerators can represent a promising technology for ocean energy harvesting with application in the maritime industry. Full article

Flocculants are indispensable in water and wastewater treatment, enabling the aggregation and removal of suspended particles, colloids, and emulsions. However, the conventional development and application of flocculants rely heavily on empirical methods, which are time-consuming, resource-intensive, and environmentally problematic due to issues such as sludge production and chemical residues. Recent advances in machine learning (ML) have opened transformative avenues for the design, optimization, and intelligent application of flocculants. This review systematically examines the integration of ML into flocculant research, covering algorithmic approaches, data-driven structure–property modeling, high-throughput formulation screening, and smart process control. ML models—including random forests, neural networks, and Gaussian processes—have successfully predicted flocculation performance, guided synthesis optimization, and enabled real-time dosing control. Applications extend to both synthetic and bioflocculants, with ML facilitating strain engineering, fermentation yield prediction, and polymer degradability assessments. Furthermore, the convergence of ML with IoT, digital twins, and life cycle assessment tools has accelerated the transition toward sustainable, adaptive, and low-impact treatment technologies. Despite its potential, challenges remain in data standardization, model interpretability, and real-world implementation. This review concludes by outlining strategic pathways for future research, including the development of open datasets, hybrid physics–ML frameworks, and interdisciplinary collaborations. By leveraging ML, the next generation of flocculant systems can be more effective, environmentally benign, and intelligently controlled, contributing to global water sustainability goals. This study employs a mixed method. In-depth interviews and observational studies are among the data collection approaches used in qualitative research. The quantitative method measures the weight of respondents’ answers to the distributed questionnaire. The questionnaire, containing 82 items, was distributed to 202 tourists to collect their perceptions based on the 4A tourist components. The results indicate that tourists’ perceptions of attractions, accessibility, and ancillary services are generally positive. In contrast, perceptions of amenity services are less favorable. Using the scores from IFAS, EFAS, and the I-E matrix, the total weighted scores for IFAS and EFAS are 2.68 and 2.83, respectively. The appropriate strategy for BTV is one of aggressive growth in a position of strengths and opportunities. The study highlights key techniques, including the application of information technology in service and promotion, the strengthening of community and government roles, the development of infrastructure and facilities, the utilization of external resources, sustainable innovation, and the encouragement of local governments to issue regulations for halal tourism villages. By identifying drivers and barriers from an economic, environmental, social, and cultural perspective, the SWOT analysis results help design strategies that can make positive contributions to the development of sustainable, community-based halal tourism and digital information in the future. As Android malware grows increasingly sophisticated, traditional detection methods struggle to keep pace, creating an urgent need for robust, interpretable, and real-time solutions to safeguard mobile ecosystems. This study introduces YoloMal-XAI, a novel deep learning framework that transforms Android application files into RGB image representations by mapping DEX (Dalvik Executable), Manifest.xml, and Resources.arsc files to distinct color channels. Evaluated on the CICMalDroid2020 dataset using YOLO11 pretrained classification models, YoloMal-XAI achieves 99.87% accuracy in binary classification and 99.56% in multi-class classification (Adware, Banking, Riskware, SMS, and Benign). Compared to ResNet-50, GoogLeNet, and MobileNetV2, YOLO11 offers competitive accuracy with at least 7× faster training over 100 epochs. Against YOLOv8, YOLO11 achieves comparable or superior accuracy while reducing training time by up to 3.5×. Cross-corpus validation using Drebin and CICAndMal2017 further confirms the model’s generalization capability on previously unseen malware. An ablation study highlights the value of integrating DEX, Manifest, and Resources components, with the full RGB configuration consistently delivering the best performance. Explainable AI (XAI) techniques—Grad-CAM, Grad-CAM++, Eigen-CAM, and HiRes-CAM—are employed to interpret model decisions, revealing the DEX segment as the most influential component. These results establish YoloMal-XAI as a scalable, efficient, and interpretable framework for Android malware detection, with strong potential for future deployment on resource-constrained mobile devices. Background/Objectives: Accurate and accessible perioperative health information empowers patients and enhances recovery outcomes. Artificial intelligence tools, such as ChatGPT, have garnered attention for their potential in health communication. This study evaluates the accuracy and readability of responses generated by ChatGPT to questions commonly asked about breast cancer. Methods: Fifteen simulated patient queries about breast cancer surgery preparation and recovery were prepared. Responses generated by ChatGPT (4o version) were evaluated for accuracy by a pool of breast surgeons using a 4-point Likert scale. Readability was assessed with the Flesch–Kincaid Grade Level (FKGL). Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the findings. Results: Of the 15 responses evaluated, 11 were rated as “accurate and comprehensive”, while 4 out of 15 were deemed “correct but incomplete”. No responses were classified as “partially incorrect” or “completely incorrect”. The median FKGL score was 11.2, indicating a high school reading level. While most responses were technically accurate, the complexity of language exceeded the recommended readability levels for patient-directed materials. Conclusions: The model shows potential as a complementary resource for patient education in breast cancer surgery, but should not replace direct interaction with healthcare providers. Future research should focus on enhancing language models’ ability to generate accessible and patient-friendly content. Full article

Continuous monitoring of environmental and physiological parameters is essential for early diagnostics, real-time decision making, and intelligent system adaptation. Recent advancements in bio-microelectromechanical systems (BioMEMS) sensors have significantly enhanced our ability to track key metrics in real time. However, continuous monitoring demands sustainable energy supply solutions, especially for on-site energy replenishment in areas with limited resources. Artificial intelligence (AI), particularly large language models, offers new avenues for interpreting the vast amounts of data generated by these sensors. Despite this potential, fully integrated systems that combine self-powered BioMEMS sensing with AI-based analytics remain in the early stages of development. This review first examines the evolution of BioMEMS sensors, focusing on advances in sensing materials, micro/nano-scale architectures, and fabrication techniques that enable high sensitivity, flexibility, and biocompatibility for continuous monitoring applications. We then examine recent advances in energy harvesting technologies, such as piezoelectric nanogenerators, triboelectric nanogenerators and moisture electricity generators, which enable self-powered BioMEMS sensors to operate continuously and reducereliance on traditional batteries. Finally, we discuss the role of AI in BioMEMS sensing, particularly in predictive analytics, to analyze continuous monitoring data, identify patterns, trends, and anomalies, and transform this data into actionable insights. This comprehensive analysis aims to provide a roadmap for future continuous BioMEMS sensing, revealing the potential unlocked by combining materials science, energy harvesting, and artificial intelligence. Technological roadmaps are essential tools for managing and planning complex projects, especially in the rapidly evolving field of space exploration. Defined as dynamic schedules, they support strategic and long-term planning while coordinating current and future objectives with particular technology solutions. Currently, the available methodologies are mostly built on experts’ opinions and in just few cases, methodologies and tools have been developed to support the decision makers with a rational approach. In any case, all the available approaches are meant to draw “ideal” maturation plans. Therefore, it is deemed essential to develop an integrate new algorithms able to decision guidelines on “non-nominal” scenarios. In this context, Politecnico di Torino, in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA) and Thales Alenia Space–Italia, developed the Technology Roadmapping Strategy (TRIS), a multi-step process designed to create robust and data-driven roadmaps. However, one of the main concerns with its initial implementation was that TRIS did not account for time and budget estimates specific to the space exploration environment, nor was it capable of generating alternative development paths under constrained conditions. This paper discloses two main significant updates to TRIS methodology: (1) improved time and budget estimation to better reflect the specific challenges of space exploration scenarios and (2) the capability of generating alternative roadmaps, i.e., alternative technological maturation paths in resource-constrained scenarios, balancing financial and temporal limitations. The application of the developed routines to available case studies confirms the tool’s ability to provide consistent planning outputs across multiple scenarios without exceeding 20% deviation from expert-based judgements available as reference. The results demonstrate the potential of the enhanced methodology in supporting strategic decision making in early-phase mission planning, ensuring adaptability to changing conditions, optimized use of time and financial resources, as well as guaranteeing an improved flexibility of the tool. By integrating data-driven prioritization, uncertainty modeling, and resource-constrained planning, TRIS equips mission planners with reliable tools to navigate the complexities of space exploration projects. This methodology ensures that roadmaps remain adaptable to changing conditions and optimized for real-world challenges, supporting the sustainable advancement of space exploration initiatives. First-generation students can experience a cultural mismatch between their values and those that colleges and universities tend to prioritize. This mismatch can increase cognitive load, leaving fewer resources available for learning. Effective and long-lasting learning requires actively processing new information and connecting it to existing knowledge—an effort that demands significant cognitive resources. Value affirmation exercises, where students select and reflect upon values that are important to them, have shown promise in reducing cultural mismatch and improving performance on cognitive tasks. However, the impact of these exercises on the learning and recall of new information is less clear. The current study investigated whether a value affirmation exercise, completed before reading an educational passage, would improve memory recall for that passage in a sample of 400 first-generation and continuing-generation young adults, as compared to not affirming. Our results failed to provide evidence that value affirmation exercises impacted recall performance, regardless of whether participants affirmed independent values, interdependent values, or both. Given the importance and implications of this outcome for student learning, we discuss possible explanations for these null findings and suggest future directions in affirmation research. During the automated picking of table grapes, the automatic recognition and segmentation of grape pedicels, along with the positioning of picking points, are vital components for all the following operations of the harvesting robot. In the actual scene of a grape plantation, however, it is extremely difficult to accurately and efficiently identify and segment grape pedicels and then reliably locate the picking points. This is attributable to the low distinguishability between grape pedicels and the surrounding environment such as branches, as well as the impacts of other conditions like weather, lighting, and occlusion, which are coupled with the requirements for model deployment on edge devices with limited computing resources. To address these issues, this study proposes a novel picking point localization method for table grapes based on an instance segmentation network called Progressive Global-Local Structure-Sensitive Segmentation (PGSS-YOLOv11s) and a simple combination strategy of morphological operators. More specifically, the network PGSS-YOLOv11s is composed of an original backbone of the YOLOv11s-seg, a spatial feature aggregation module (SFAM), an adaptive feature fusion module (AFFM), and a detail-enhanced convolutional shared detection head (DE-SCSH). And the PGSS-YOLOv11s have been trained with a new grape segmentation dataset called Grape-⊥, which includes 4455 grape pixel-level instances with the annotation of ⊥-shaped regions. After the PGSS-YOLOv11s segments the ⊥-shaped regions of grapes, some morphological operations such as erosion, dilation, and skeletonization are combined to effectively extract grape pedicels and locate picking points. Finally, several experiments have been conducted to confirm the validity, effectiveness, and superiority of the proposed method. Compared with the other state-of-the-art models, the main metrics F1 score and mask mAP@0.5 of the PGSS-YOLOv11s reached 94.6% and 95.2% on the Grape-⊥ dataset, as well as 85.4% and 90.0% on the Winegrape dataset. Multi-scenario tests indicated that the success rate of positioning the picking points reached up to 89.44%. In orchards, real-time tests on the edge device demonstrated the practical performance of our method. Nevertheless, for grapes with short pedicels or occluded pedicels, the designed morphological algorithm exhibited the loss of picking point calculations. In future work, we will enrich the grape dataset by collecting images under different lighting conditions, from various shooting angles, and including more grape varieties to improve the method’s generalization performance. This paper presents a numerical simulation study evaluating carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) feasibility for the Turceni Power Plant in Oltenia, Romania, using the nearby depleted Bibești-Bulbuceni gas reservoir. A comprehensive reservoir model was developed using Petrel software, integrating geological and reservoir engineering data for the formations of the Bibești-Bulbuceni structure, which is part of the western Moesian Platform. The static model incorporated realistic petrophysical inputs for the Meotian reservoirs. Dynamic simulations were performed using Eclipse compositional simulator with Peng–Robinson equation of state for a CH4-CO2 system. The model was initialized with natural gas initially in place at 149 bar reservoir pressure, then produced through depletion to 20.85 bar final pressure, achieving 80% recovery factor. CO2 injection simulations modeled a phased 19-well injection program over 25 years, with individual well constraints of 100 bar bottom-hole pressure and 200,000 Sm3/day injection rates. Results demonstrate successful injection of a 60 Mt CO2, with final reservoir pressure reaching 101 bar. The modeling framework validates the technical feasibility of transforming Turceni’s power generation into a net-zero process through CCS implementation. Key limitations include simplified geochemical interactions and relying on historical data with associated uncertainties. This study provides quantitative evidence for CCS viability in depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs, supporting industrial decarbonization strategies. The strategy not only aligns with the EU’s climate-neutral policy but also enhances local energy security by repurposing existing geological resources. The findings highlight the potential of CCS to bridge the gap between current energy systems and a sustainable, climate-neutral future. Full article

The European Health Technology Assessment (HTA) regulation (HTAR) came into effect in January 2025 and impacts the HTA process in all European Member States. Member States must give due consideration to the joint clinical assessment (JCA) report. This may require adaptations at the national level. This paper describes the anticipated changes to the Dutch national HTA process and how the Dutch National Health Care Institute (Zorginstituut Nederland, ZIN) prepared for this, because sharing experience between Member States can be of general interest for future expansion of the EU HTAR. ZIN’s implementation activities were facilitated by a project-governance structure and by a continuous gap analysis of the current national assessment and appraisal process of medicinal products, resulting in a concrete action plan. The implementation of the HTAR has two major implications for ZIN’s HTA process, namely that the scoping phase starts much earlier and that the JCA report is the starting point for the national assessment. Gaps, challenges and issues were identified in the categories: information and knowledge, IT and template, communication and stakeholder engagement, capacity and resources, and financial aspects. Based on a thorough and well-defined implementation plan, ZIN is ready to implement the HTAR in national HTA processes and to take on (co-)assessor roles for JCA of medicinal products in 2025. Cross-validation and open research on future electric grids, particularly in their stability modeling and dynamic performance, can greatly benefit from high-fidelity, publicly available test cases, since access to dynamic response models of actual grid models is often limited due to legitimate security concerns. This paper presents a methodology for designing and validating the dynamic performance of large, IBR-heavy synthetic grids, that is, realistic but fictitious test cases. The methodology offers a comprehensive framework for creating dynamic models for both synchronous generators (SGs) and inverter-based resources (IBRs), focusing on realism, controllability, and flexibility. For realistic dynamic performance, the parameters in each dynamic model are sampled based on statistical data from benchmark actual grids, considering power system dynamics such as frequency and voltage control, as well as oscillation response. The paper introduces system-wide governor design, which improves the controllability of parameters in dynamic models, resulting in a more realistic frequency response. As an example, multiple case studies on a 2000-bus Texas synthetic grid are shown; these represent realistic dynamic performance under different transmission conditions in terms of frequency, voltage control, and oscillation response. Underwater acoustic (UWA) communication supports many critical applications but still faces several physical-layer signal processing challenges. In response, recent advances in machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) offer promising solutions to improve signal detection, modulation adaptability, and classification accuracy. These developments highlight the need for a systematic evaluation to compare various ML/DL models and assess their performance across diverse underwater conditions. However, most existing reviews on ML/DL-based UWA communication focus on isolated approaches rather than integrated system-level perspectives, which limits cross-domain insights and reduces their relevance to practical underwater deployments. Consequently, this systematic literature review (SLR) synthesizes 43 studies (2020–2025) on ML and DL approaches for UWA communication, covering channel estimation, adaptive modulation, and modulation recognition across both single- and multi-carrier systems. The findings reveal that models such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs), long short-term memory networks (LSTMs), and generative adversarial networks (GANs) enhance channel estimation performance, achieving error reductions and bit error rate (BER) gains ranging from 103 to 106. Adaptive modulation techniques incorporating support vector machines (SVMs), CNNs, and reinforcement learning (RL) attain classification accuracies exceeding 98% and throughput improvements of up to 25%. For modulation recognition, architectures like sequence CNNs, residual networks, and hybrid convolutional–recurrent models achieve up to 99.38% accuracy with latency below 10 ms. These performance metrics underscore the viability of ML/DL-based solutions in optimizing physical-layer tasks for real-world UWA deployments. Finally, the SLR identifies key challenges in UWA communication, including high complexity, limited data, fragmented performance metrics, deployment realities, energy constraints and poor scalability. It also outlines future directions like lightweight models, physics-informed learning, advanced RL strategies, intelligent resource allocation, and robust feature fusion to build reliable and intelligent underwater systems. Applying language models (LMs) and generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) to the study of Ancient Greek offers promising opportunities. However, it faces substantial challenges due to the language’s morphological complexity and lack of annotated resources. Despite growing interest, no systematic overview of existing research currently exists. To address this gap, a systematic literature review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 methodology. Twenty-seven peer-reviewed studies were identified and analyzed, focusing on application areas such as machine translation, morphological analysis, named entity recognition (NER), and emotion detection. The review reveals six key findings, highlighting both the technical advances and persistent limitations, particularly the scarcity of large, domain-specific corpora and the need for better integration into educational contexts. Future developments should focus on building richer resources and tailoring models to the unique features of Ancient Greek, thereby fully realizing the potential of these technologies in both research and teaching.
