With the rapid development of video streaming services, adaptive bitrate (ABR) algorithms have become a core technology for ensuring optimal viewing experiences. Traditional ABR strategies, predominantly rule-based or reinforcement learning-driven, typically employ uniform quality assessment metrics that overlook users’ subjective preference differences regarding factors such as video quality and stalling. To address this limitation, this paper proposes an adaptive video bitrate selection system that integrates preference modeling with reinforcement learning. By incorporating a preference learning module, the system models and scores user viewing trajectories, using these scores to replace conventional rewards and guide the training of the Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) algorithm, thereby achieving policy optimization that better aligns with users’ perceived experiences. Simulation results on DASH network bandwidth traces demonstrate that the proposed optimization method improves overall Quality of Experience (QoE) by over 9% compared to other mainstream algorithms. Enhancing market integration levels is crucial for advancing sustainable regional collaborative development and achieving ecological protection and high-quality development goals within the Yellow River Basin, fostering a balance between economic efficiency, social equity, and environmental resilience. This study analyzed the retail price data of goods from prefecture-level cities in the Yellow River Basin from 2010 to 2022, employing the relative price method to measure the market integration index. Additionally, it examined the temporal and spatial evolution patterns and driving factors using the Dagum Gini coefficient and panel regression models. The results indicate the following. (1) The market integration index of the Yellow River Basin shows a fluctuating upward trend, with an average annual growth rate of 9.8%. The spatial pattern generally reflects a situation where the east is relatively high and the west is relatively low, as well as the south being higher than the north. (2) Regional disparities are gradually diminishing, with the overall Gini coefficient decreasing from 0.153 to 0.104. However, internal differences within the downstream and midstream areas have become prominent, and contribution rate analysis reveals that super-variable density has replaced between-group disparities as the primary source. (3) Upgrading the industrial structure and enhancing the level of economic development are the core driving forces, while financial support and digital infrastructure significantly accelerate the integration process. Conversely, the level of openness exhibits a phase-specific negative impact. We propose policy emphasizing the need to strengthen development in the upper reach of the Yellow River Basin, further improve interregional collaborative innovation mechanisms, and enhance cross-regional coordination among multicenter network nodes. Archaeological sites located on the edge of growing cities often struggle to reconcile heritage protection with rapid development. To understand this tension, we examined a 50.83 km2 zone around the Western Han Imperial Mausoleums in the Qin-Han New District. Using Landsat images from 1992, 2002, 2012, and 2022, this study applied supervised classification, land-use transfer matrices, and dynamic-degree analysis to trace three decades of land-use change. From 1992 to 2022, built-up land expanded by 29.85 percentage points, largely replacing farmland, which shrank by 35.64 percentage points and became fragmented. Forest cover gained a modest 5.78 percentage points and migrated eastward toward the mausoleums. Overall, urban growth followed a “spread–integrate–connect” pattern along major roads. This study interprets these trends through five interrelated drivers, including policy, planning, economy, population, and heritage protection, and proposes an integrated management model. The model links archaeological pre-assessment with land-use compatibility zoning and active community participation. Together, these measures offer a practical roadmap for balancing conservation and sustainable land management at imperial burial complexes and similar urban fringe heritage sites. Full article

Urban areas are responsible for most of Europe’s energy demand and emissions and urgently require building retrofits to meet climate neutrality goals. This study evaluates the energy efficiency potential of three public school buildings in western Macedonia, Greece—a cold-climate region with high heating needs. The buildings, constructed between 1986 and 2003, exhibited poor insulation, outdated electromechanical systems, and inefficient lighting, resulting in high oil consumption and low energy ratings. A robust methodology is applied, combining detailed on-site energy audits, thermophysical diagnostics based on U-value calculations, and a techno-economic assessment utilizing Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR), and SWOT analysis. The study evaluates a series of retrofit measures, including ceiling insulation, high-efficiency lighting replacements, and boiler modernization, against both technical performance criteria and financial viability. Results indicate that ceiling insulation and lighting system upgrades yield positive economic returns, while wall and floor insulation measures remain financially unattractive without external subsidies. The findings are further validated through sensitivity analysis and policy scenario modeling, revealing how targeted investments, especially when supported by public funding schemes, can maximize energy savings and emissions reductions. The study concludes that selective implementation of cost-effective measures, supported by public grants, can achieve energy targets, improve indoor environments, and serve as a replicable model of targeted retrofits across the region, though reliance on external funding and high upfront costs pose challenges. The lack of precise definitions in plastics-related terminology continues to hinder the development of coherent sustainability strategies across the materials value chain. This communication revisits current definitions of plastics, polymers, and bioplastics, distinguishing between source (bio-based vs. fossil-based), structure (synthetic vs. natural polymer), and degradation behaviour (persistent vs. compostable or biodegradable). It critiques ambiguous classifications promoted in policy and marketing discourse. It introduces the concept of “Zero-Trace Plastic” (ZTP) to refer to materials that are non-plastic substitutes intended for versatile plastic-like uses while guaranteeing no trace of synthetic plastics in their composition and no contribution to pollution across their lifecycle. The ZTPframework prioritises complete mineralisation without plastic or microplastics or chemical residues under real-world conditions. ZTP is proposed not as a replacement for existing biodegradability standards, but it helps distinguish between plastic and non-plastic biopolymers and works as a complementary benchmark for biodegradability that aligns with and extends them by incorporating environmental specificity and system-wide traceability. The paper proposes a harmonised terminology matrix and calls for coordinated efforts by international agencies and standardisation institutes, national bodies and industries to avoid using misleading terminologies like bioplastics, often used for greenwashing and to enhance circular material strategies. Background: Tobacco use is disproportionately high in rural areas, contributing to elevated cancer mortality, yet it often goes untreated due to limited access to care, high poverty and uninsured rates, and co-occurring substance use disorders (SUDs). This study explored the utility of using rapid qualitative analysis (RQA) to guide the adaptation of a tobacco-free workplace program (TFWP) in Texas healthcare centers serving adults with SUDs in medically underserved areas. Methods: From September–December 2023 and May–July 2024, we conducted 11 pre-implementation, virtual semi-structured group interviews focused on adapting the TFWP to local contexts (N = 69); 7 with providers (n = 34) and managers (n = 12) and 4 with patients (n = 23) in 6 healthcare centers. Two qualified analysts independently summarized transcripts, using RQA templates of key domains drawn from interview guides to summarize and organize data in matrices, enabling systematic comparison. Results: The main themes identified were minimal organizational tobacco cessation support and practices, and attitudinal barriers, as follows: (1) the need for program materials tailored to local populations; (2) limited tobacco cessation practices and partial policies—staff requested guidance on enhancing tobacco screenings and cessation delivery, and integrating new interventions; (3) contradictory views on treating tobacco use that can inhibit implementation (e.g., wanting to quit yet anxious that quitting would cause SUD relapse); and (4) inadequate environmental supports—staff requested treating tobacco-use training, patients group cessation counseling; both requested nicotine replacement therapy. Conclusions: RQA identified key areas requiring capacity development through participants’ willingness to adopt the following adaptations: program content (e.g., trainings and tailored educational materials), delivery methods/systems (e.g., adopting additional tobacco care interventions) and implementation strategies (e.g., integrating tobacco cessation practices into routine care) critical to optimizing TFWP fit and implementation. The study findings can inform timely formative evaluation processes to design and tailor similar intervention efforts by addressing site-specific needs and implementation barriers to enhance program uptake. Since the early 21st century, urban shrinkage has become a significant global phenomenon. Dongguan, in Guangdong Province, China, is known as a “world factory”. It experienced notable urban shrinkage following the 2008 financial crisis. However, the city demonstrated remarkable recovery and ongoing development in subsequent years. On that basis, this study focuses on the following three points: (1) identifying the spatiotemporal factors contributing to the growth and shrinkage of manufacturing cities, taking Dongguan as an example; (2) explaining the influencing factors of the growth and shrinkage of Dongguan City during three critical periods, 2008–2014 (post-crisis), 2015–2019 (as machinery replaced human work), and 2020–2023 (the COVID-19 pandemic and recovery); and (3) selecting representative towns and streets for on-site observation and investigation, analyzing the measures they have taken to cope with growth and shrinkage during different periods. The key findings include the following: (1) The spatial dynamics of growth and shrinkage in Dongguan show significant temporal patterns, with traditional manufacturing areas shrinking from 2008 to 2014, central urban areas recovering from 2015 to 2019, and renewed shrinkage from 2020 to 2023. However, some regions maintained stability through strategic innovations. (2) Various factors, particularly industrial upgrading and technological innovation, drove the urban dynamics, enhancing economic resilience. (3) The case study of Houjie Town revealed successful adaptive mechanisms supported by policy while facing challenges like labor mismatches and inadequate R&D investment. This research offers insights for improving urban resilience and promoting sustainable development in Dongguan. Full article

Past archaeological practices have resulted in a distorted history of Native American cultures based upon western-biased research. This has been especially apparent in the rock art of the Klamath Basin in southern Oregon and northern California. In response to this, Native and non-Native scholars are striving to develop a counter-discourse that both challenges and replaces western constructs in research on Native American communities. The result of this approach is a growing trend within the discipline that has come to be called “Indigenous Archaeology.” Critical to this approach is that Native voices are transported from the margins of the research to its center, where they are intended to replace the Western colonialist narrative. Unfortunately, Native American tribal communities have been the targets of federal assimilation policies for the past few centuries, and as a result, much of their cultural knowledge unwittingly carries forward this distorted past. In this paper I explore a framework built upon ethnographic accounts of shamanism and rock art, along with a robust familiarity with local myth, and how this provides a foundation of traditional cultural knowledge against which to compare and evaluate the interpretive statements made in contemporary tribal members about rock art and other sacred material culture. In Ukraine, SARS-CoV-2 detection and national genomic surveillance have been complicated by full-scale war, limited resources, and varying levels of public health infrastructure impacted across the country. Following the Spring of 2022, only a paucity of data have been reported describing the prevalence and variant dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 in the country. Comparative whole genome analysis has overtaken diagnostics as the new gold standard for detecting and tracing emerging variants while showing utility to rapidly inform diagnostics, vaccine strategies, and health policy. Herein, we provide an updated report characterizing the dynamics and prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 in Ukraine from 1 May 2022 to 31 March 2024. The present study extends previous reports for disease incidence Waves 1–4 in Ukraine with the addition herein of Waves 5, 6, and 7, occurring from August to November 2022 (Wave 5), February to May 2023 (Wave 6), and October 2023 to January 2024 (Wave 7). During the study period, the national Case Fatality Rate (CFR) fluctuated between 0.46% and 1.74%, indicating a consistent yet modest rate when compared to the global average. The epidemiological dynamics of Variants of Concern (VOCs) in Ukraine reflected global patterns over this period, punctuated by the rise of the BA.5 lineage and its subsequent replacement by the Omicron subvariants XBB and JN.1. Our analysis of variant dispersal patterns revealed multiple potential spatiotemporal introductions into Ukraine from Europe, Asia, and North America. Our results highlight the importance of ongoing genomic surveillance to monitor variant dynamics and support global efforts to control and mitigate COVID-19 disease risks as new variants arise. As Artificial Intelligence systems increasingly surpass or replace traditional human roles, institutions founded on beliefs in human cognitive superiority, moral authority, and procedural oversight encounter a more profound challenge than mere disruption: expiration. This paper posits that, instead of being outperformed, many legacy institutions are becoming epistemically misaligned with the realities of AI-driven environments. To clarify this change, the paper presents the Expiration Theory. This conceptual model interprets institutional collapse not as a market failure but as the erosion of fundamental assumptions amid technological shifts. In addition, the paper introduces the AI Pressure Clock, a diagnostic tool that categorizes institutions based on their vulnerability to AI disruption and their capacity to adapt to it. Through an analysis across various sectors, including law, healthcare, education, finance, and the creative industries, the paper illustrates how specific systems are nearing functional obsolescence while others are actively restructuring their foundational norms. As a conceptual study, the paper concludes by highlighting the theoretical, policy, and leadership ramifications, asserting that institutional survival in the age of AI relies not solely on digital capabilities but also on the capacity to redefine the core principles of legitimacy, authority, and decision-making. Healthy peatlands provide valuable ecosystem services. Peat extraction damages peatlands, leading to carbon emissions. One of the main reasons for peat extraction is for use in horticulture. Replacing peat with recycled organic materials in horticulture is critical to preserve the valuable ecosystems provided by peatlands and to establish more circular supply chains that are reliant on recycling rather than extraction. Despite the strong policy commitment and budget allocation to restore peatlands, the demand for peat-based growing media remains high and drives most of the peat demand. In our research, we mapped the growing media supply chain, held semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders representing different interests, and surveyed amateur gardeners in the UK to understand the bottlenecks experienced by each profile in ending peat use and how to overcome them. We employed semi-structured key expert surveys to understand the supply chain dynamics and consumer demand, informed by these early interviews and the previous literature, we prepared and distributed an online consumer survey and interviewed supply-side stakeholders to understand their perspectives. The findings indicate that the barriers of availability, cost, and performance are shared between the supply-and-demand-side stakeholders. A portfolio of financial, educational and logistic interventions is required to simultaneously support the supply side to accelerate the transformation of production and supply patterns and to aid the demand side to adapt to growing with compost of recycled organic materials. The policies promoting recycled organic material use in horticulture must be coordinated within the UK and with other parts of Europe focusing on the elimination of the peat content in products rather than peat extraction to avoid extraction and the associated destruction of peat stocks elsewhere. Mobile phone waste management is a growing environmental challenge, with improper disposal contributing to resource depletion, pollution and missed opportunities for material recovery. This study presents the findings of a dual-purpose survey (11,163 respondents) conducted in a wide academic context in Italy, aimed at both assessing mobile phones disposal behaviors and knowledge and raising awareness through structured educational prompts about sustainable e-waste management. The results reveal significant behavioral patterns and knowledge gaps across demographic groups. While most respondents (90.6%) own one phone, males tend to have more than females. Phones are replaced every 3–5 years by 48.8% of users and every 1–3 years by 36.7%, with students tending to replace them earlier. Only 20.2% replace their phone when irreparable while 46% replace them due to high repair costs. A large majority (92.3%) store old devices at home, forming an estimated urban mine of 29,799 unused phones. The awareness of hazardous components is higher than that of critical raw materials, with males more informed than females and students in scientific fields displaying greater awareness than those in humanities and health disciplines. The awareness of official take-back programs is particularly low, especially among younger generations. Notably, 90% reported increased awareness from the educational survey and 93.1% expressed willingness to use an on-campus e-waste collection system. These results highlight the role of universities as catalysts for sustainable behavior, supporting the design of targeted educational strategies and policy actions in line with circular economy principles and Sustainable Development Goal 12 “Responsible consumption and production”. This article examines the energy efficiency and climate impact of various heating methods commonly employed across industrial sectors. Fossil fuel combustion heat sources, which are predominantly employed for industrial heating, contribute significantly to atmospheric pollution and associated asset losses. The electrification of industrial heating has the potential to substantially reduce the total energy consumed in industrial heating processes and significantly mitigate the rate of global warming. Advances in electrical heating technologies are driven by enhanced energy conversion, compactness, and precision control capabilities, ensuring attractive financial payback periods for clean, energy-efficient equipment. These advancements stem from the use of improved performance materials, process optimization, and waste heat utilization practices, particularly at high temperatures. The technical challenges associated with large-scale, heavy-duty electric process heating are addressed through the novel innovations discussed in this article. Electrification and the corresponding energy efficiency improvements reduce the water consumed for industrial steam requirements. The article reviews new technologies that replace conventional process gas heaters and pressure boilers with efficient electric process gas heaters and instant steam generators, operating in the high kilowatt and megawatt power ranges with very high-temperature capabilities. Financial payback calculations for energy-optimized processes are illustrated with examples encompassing a range of comparative energy costs across various temperatures. The economics and implications of waste heat utilization are also examined in this article. Additionally, the role of futuristic, radical technical innovations is evaluated as a sustainable pathway that can significantly lower energy consumption without compromising performance objectives. The potential for a new paradigm of self-organization in processes and final usage objectives is briefly explored for sustainable innovations in thermal engineering and materials development. The policy implications and early adoption of large-scale, energy-efficient thermal electrification are discussed in the context of temperature segmentation for industrial-scale processes and climate-driven asset losses. Policy shifts towards incentivizing energy efficiency at the manufacturing level of heater use are recommended as a pathway for deep decarbonization. Full article

International waste policy promotes the reduction and re-use of waste materials, and in some cases, specifically calls for the use of recycled materials in pavements. In countries like Australia, most of the aircraft pavement network is constructed of flexible pavements. Consequently, understanding the opportunities for recycled materials in flexible aircraft pavements is paramount to increasing the technology uptake. This paper reviews opportunities for the incorporation of recycled materials in flexible airport pavement construction, specifically, their application to particle substitution in unbound and asphaltic layers, use in stabilization treatments, and use as a bitumen modifier. Additionally, environmental product declarations are reviewed to provide a range of typical environmental costs for each recycled material when considering material processing for incorporation into flexible pavements. These materials are compared to virgin material environmental costs to determine which recycled materials provide the highest environmental benefit potential. It was concluded that particle replacement in unbound layers with waste materials had a similar environmental cost to using virgin materials. However, the requirement to dispose of waste material to the landfill can be significantly reduced. For asphaltic layers, recycled asphalt pavement as an asphalt mixture replacement, fly ash as a hydrated lime replacement, and waste plastic and crumbed rubber as a virgin polymer replacement all are effective in reducing the environmental cost. To further increase the technology uptake, a risk-based approach for the implementation of waste materials in airport flexible pavements is recommended, which considers performance testing, the depth of the pavement layer, and the pavement functional area. Under the global context of addressing climate change and actively promoting energy transition, green power has become increasingly vital in the energy structure due to its clean and sustainable advantages. However, the development of green power’s environmental value faces multiple challenges that hinder its marketization. This study first systematically analyzes the current status of developing the environmental value of green power and identifies existing issues. Second, it designs a green power environmental value mechanism and constructs a quantitative model from the perspective of coal-fired power carbon abatement costs, analyzing the emission reduction value of green power in replacing different types of coal-fired power generation. The results show the following: (1) When power generation types are not differentiated, the environmental value exhibits significant seasonal variations. (2) The environmental value for coal-fired units above 300 MW is lower than the overall average, while that of gas-fired units falls between coal-fired units and the average; the environmental value of generating units with a capacity of 300 MW or less is the lowest, followed by that of unconventional coal-fired units. (3) The environmental value calculated based on the marginal carbon abatement cost of coal-fired units, is slightly higher than the tradable green certificate (TGC) price. This study provides policy support for promoting the low-carbon transition of the power sector and facilitating the development of a green power trading market. Full article
