The synthesis of “green ammonia” from “green hydrogen” represents a critical pathway for renewable energy integration and industrial decarbonization. This study investigates the green ammonia synthesis process using an axial–radial fixed-bed reactor equipped with three catalyst layers. A simplified two-dimensional physical model was developed, and a multiscale simulation approach combining computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) employed. The simulation results demonstrate that the majority of fluid flows axially through the catalyst beds, leading to significantly higher temperatures in the upper bed regions. The reactor exhibits excellent heat exchange performance, ensuring effective preheating of the feed gas. High-pressure zones are concentrated near the top and bottom gas outlets, while the ammonia mole fraction approaches 100% near the bottom outlet, confirming superior conversion efficiency. By integrating PINNs, the prediction accuracy was substantially improved, with flow field errors in the catalyst beds below 4.5% and ammonia concentration prediction accuracy above 97.2%. Key reaction kinetic parameters (pre-exponential factor k0 and activation energy Ea) were successfully inverted with errors within 7%, while computational efficiency increased by 200 times compared to traditional CFD. The proposed CFD–PINN integrated framework provides a high-fidelity and computationally efficient simulation tool for green ammonia reactor design, particularly suitable for scenarios with fluctuating hydrogen supply. The reactor design reduces energy per unit ammonia and improves conversion efficiency. Its radial flow configuration enhances operational stability by damping feed fluctuations, thereby accelerating green hydrogen adoption. By reducing fossil fuel dependence, it promotes industrial decarbonization. Full article

The transition to green energy in the transport sector is becoming a priority in the context of global climate challenges and the European Green Deal. This paper investigates the development of alternative fuelling stations, particularly electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure and hydrogen stations, across EU countries with a focus on Poland. It combines a policy and technology overview with a quantitative scientific analysis, offering a multidimensional perspective on green infrastructure deployment. A Pearson correlation analysis reveals significant links between charging station density and both GDP per capita and the share of renewable energy. The study introduces an original Infrastructure Accessibility Index (IAI) to compare infrastructure availability across EU member states and models Poland’s EV charging station demand up to 2030 under multiple growth scenarios. Furthermore, the article provides a comprehensive overview of biofuels, including first-, second-, and third-generation technologies, and highlights recent advances in hydrogen and renewable electricity integration. Emphasis is placed on life cycle considerations, energy source sustainability, and economic implications. The findings support policy development toward zero-emission mobility and the decarbonisation of transport systems, offering recommendations for infrastructure expansion and energy diversification strategies. Hydrogen produced from renewable sources has the potential to tackle various energy challenges, from allowing cost-effective transportation of renewable energy from production to consumption regions to decarbonizing intensive energy consumption industries. Due to its application versatility and non-greenhouse gaseous emissions characteristics, it is expected that hydrogen will play an important role in the decarbonization strategies set out for 2050. Currently, there are some barriers and challenges that need to be addressed to fully take advantage of the opportunities associated with hydrogen. The present work aims to characterize the state of the art of different hydrogen production, storage, transport, and distribution technologies, which compose the hydrogen value chain. Based on the information collected it was possible to conclude the following: (i) Electrolysis is the frontrunner to produce green hydrogen at a large scale (efficiency up to 80%) since some of the production technologies under this category have already achieved a commercially available state; (ii) in the storage phase, various technologies may be suitable based on specific conditions and purposes. Technologies of the physical-based type are the ones mostly used in real applications; (iii) transportation and distribution options should be viewed as complementary rather than competitive, as the most suitable option varies based on transportation distance and hydrogen quantity; and (iv) a single value chain configuration cannot be universally applied. Therefore, each case requires a comprehensive analysis of the entire value chain. Methodologies, like life cycle assessment, should be utilized to support the decision-making process. Full article

This study presents preliminary findings from an experimental campaign conducted on a pilot-scale green hydrogen production plant powered by a photovoltaic (PV) system. The integrated setup, implemented at the University “Mediterranea” of Reggio Calabria, includes renewable energy generation, hydrogen production via electrolysis, on-site storage, and reconversion through fuel cells. The investigation assessed system performance under different configurations (on-grid and selective stand-alone modes), focusing on key operational phases such as inerting, purging, pressurization, hydrogen generation, and depressurization. Results indicate a strong linear correlation between the electrolyser’s power setpoint and the pressure rise rate, with a maximum gradient of 0.236 bar/min observed at 75% power input. The system demonstrated robust and stable operation, efficient control of shutdown sequences, and effective integration with PV input. These outcomes support the technical feasibility of small-scale hydrogen systems driven by renewables and offer valuable reference data for calibration models and future optimization strategies. Excessive reliance on traditional energy sources such as coal, petroleum, and gas leads to a decrease in natural resources and contributes to global warming. Consequently, the adoption of renewable energy sources in power systems is experiencing swift expansion worldwide, especially in offshore areas. Floating solar photovoltaic (FPV) technology is gaining recognition as an innovative renewable energy option, presenting benefits like minimized land requirements, improved cooling effects, and possible collaborations with hydropower. This study aims to assess the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) associated with floating solar initiatives in offshore and onshore environments. Furthermore, the LCOE is assessed for initiatives that utilize floating solar PV modules within aquaculture farms, as well as for the integration of various renewable energy sources, including wind, wave, and hydropower. The LCOE for FPV technology exhibits considerable variation, ranging from 28.47 EUR/MWh to 1737 EUR/MWh, depending on the technologies utilized within the farm as well as its geographical setting. The implementation of FPV technology in aquaculture farms revealed a notable increase in the LCOE, ranging from 138.74 EUR/MWh to 2306 EUR/MWh. Implementation involving additional renewable energy sources results in a reduction in the LCOE, ranging from 3.6 EUR/MWh to 315.33 EUR/MWh. The integration of floating photovoltaic (FPV) systems into green hydrogen production represents an emerging direction that is relatively little explored but has high potential in reducing costs. The conversion of this energy into hydrogen involves high final costs, with the LCOH ranging from 1.06 EUR/kg to over 26.79 EUR/kg depending on the complexity of the system. Full article

Green hydrogen, produced via renewable-powered electrolysis, offers a promising path toward deep decarbonisation in energy systems. This study investigates the major technological, infrastructural, and economic challenges facing green hydrogen production in Jordan—a resource-constrained yet renewable-rich country. Key barriers were identified through a structured survey of 52 national stakeholders, including water scarcity, low electrolysis efficiency, limited grid compatibility, and underdeveloped transport infrastructure. Respondents emphasised that overcoming these challenges requires investment in smart grid technologies, seawater desalination, advanced electrolysers, and policy instruments such as subsidies and public–private partnerships. These findings are consistent with global assessments, which recognise similar structural and financial obstacles in scaling up green hydrogen across emerging economies. Despite the constraints, over 50% of surveyed stakeholders expressed optimism about Jordan’s potential to develop a competitive green hydrogen sector, especially for industrial and power generation uses. This paper provides empirical, context-specific insights into the conditions required to scale green hydrogen in developing economies. It proposes an integrated roadmap focusing on infrastructure modernisation, targeted financial mechanisms, and enabling policy frameworks. Full article

This article presents the development, integration, and experimental validation of a modular microgrid for sustainable hydrogen production, addressing global electricity demand and environmental challenges. The system was designed for initial validation in a thermoelectric power plant environment, with scalability to other applications. Centered on a six-compartment skid, it integrates photovoltaic generation, battery storage, and a liquefied petroleum gas generator to emulate typical cogeneration conditions, together with a high-purity proton exchange membrane electrolyzer. A supervisory control module ensures real-time monitoring and energy flow management, following international safety standards. The study also explores the incorporation of blockchain technology to certify the renewable origin of hydrogen, enhancing traceability and transparency in the green hydrogen market. The experimental results confirm the system’s technical feasibility, demonstrating stable hydrogen production, efficient energy management, and islanded-mode operation with preserved grid stability. These findings highlight the strategic role of hydrogen as an energy vector in the transition to a cleaner energy matrix and support the proposed architecture as a replicable model for industrial facilities seeking to combine hydrogen production with advanced microgrid technologies. Future work will address large-scale validation and performance optimization, including advanced energy management algorithms to ensure economic viability and sustainability in diverse industrial contexts. The MENA region, with its high solar potential and increasing investments in renewable energy, is transitioning away from fossil fuels toward more sustainable energy systems. To fully benefit from this transition and address issues such as intermittency and energy storage, “green” hydrogen is emerging as a key parameter. When produced using simple and cost-effective technologies like linear Fresnel reflector (LFR), it offers a practical solution. Therefore, assessing the potential of hydrogen production from LFR technology is essential to support the development of the energy sector and promote local industrial growth. This study investigates “green” hydrogen production using a 50 MW concentrated solar power (CSP) system based on LFR technology, where the CSP system generates electricity to power a proton exchange membrane electrolyzer for hydrogen production for three locations, including Ain Beni Mathar in Morocco, Assiout in Egypt, and Tabuk in Saudi Arabia. The results show that Tabuk achieved the highest annual hydrogen production (45.02 kg/kWe), followed by Assiout (38.72 kg/kWe) and Ain Beni Mathar (32.42 kg/kWe), with corresponding levelized costs of hydrogen (LCOH2) of 6.47 USD/kg, 6.84 USD/kg, and 7.35 USD/kg, respectively. In addition, several sensitivity analyses were conducted addressing the impact of thermal energy storage (TES) on the hydrogen production and costs, the effect of reduced investment costs resulting from the local manufacturing of LFR components, and the futuristic assumption of the electrolyzer cost drop. The integration of TES enhanced hydrogen output and reduced LCOH2 by up to 9%. Additionally, a future PEM electrolyzer costs projected for 2030 showed that LCOH2 could decrease by up to 1.3 USD/kg depending on site conditions. These findings demonstrate that combining TES with cost optimization strategies can significantly improve both technical performance and economic feasibility in the MENA region. Full article

To achieve climate goals and promote clean energy, China has introduced preferential VAT policies to promote the development of renewable energy power generation industries, but their actual impact on corporate profitability remains underexplored. This study innovatively applies a DID approach, enhanced with PSM and dynamic modeling, to evaluate the causal effects of VAT incentives on firm ROE. Using panel data from 98 listed power generation companies between 2010 and 2024, this study distinguishes treatment effects across the wind, solar, and hydrogen sectors, revealing significant heterogeneity. Unlike prior studies, it further investigates time-lagged impacts and fiscal efficiency indicators to assess policy sustainability. Results show that VAT incentives significantly enhance ROE for wind and solar firms, while the hydrogen sector exhibits weaker responses. These findings not only confirm the effectiveness of targeted tax incentives but also offer new insights for refining fiscal policies to better support sector-specific transitions toward renewable energy. This study provides empirical evidence for the design of China’s fiscal energy policy to maximize the growth of the renewable energy sector. More broadly, this study provides lessons for global green transition policies, illustrating how well-designed fiscal incentives can support sustainable energy development worldwide. Full article

In the current context, where environmental concerns are gaining increased attention, the transition toward sustainable urban mobility stands out as a necessary and responsible step. Technological advancements over the past decade have brought private autonomous vehicles, particularly those defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers Levels 4 and 5, into focus as promising solutions for mitigating road congestion and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, the extent to which Autonomous Vehicles can fulfill this potential depends largely on user acceptance, patterns of use, and their integration within broader green energy and sustainability policies. The present paper aims to develop an integrated conceptual model that links behavioral determinants to environmental outcomes, assessing how individuals’ intention to adopt private autonomous vehicles can contribute to sustainable urban mobility. The model integrates five psychosocial determinants—perceived usefulness, trust in technology, social influence, environmental concern, and perceived behavioral control—with contextual variables such as energy source, infrastructure availability, and public policy. These components interact to predict users’ intention to adopt AVs and their perceived contribution to urban sustainability. Methodologically, the study builds on a narrative synthesis of the literature and proposes a framework applicable to empirical validation through structural equation modeling (SEM). The model draws on established frameworks such as Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), Theory of Planned Behavior, and Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology, incorporating constructs including perceived usefulness, trust in technology, social influence, environmental concern, and perceived behavioral control, constructs later to be examined in relation to key contextual variables, including the energy source powering Autonomous Vehicles—such as electricity from mixed or renewable grids, hydrogen, or hybrid systems—and the broader policy environment (regulatory frameworks, infrastructure investment, fiscal incentives, and alignment with climate and mobility strategies and others). The research provides relevant directions for public policy and behavioral interventions in support of the development of clean and smart urban transport in the age of automation. Full article

Under the accelerating global energy restructuring and the deepening carbon neutrality strategy, hydrogen energy has emerged with increasing strategic value as a zero-carbon secondary energy carrier. Water electrolysis technology based on renewable energy is regarded as an ideal pathway for large-scale green hydrogen production. However, polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) conventional water electrolysis faces dual constraints in economic feasibility and scalability due to its high electrical energy consumption and reliance on noble metal catalysts. The mixed ionic-electronic conducting oxygen transport membrane (MIEC–OTM) reactor technology offers an innovative solution to this energy efficiency-cost paradox due to its thermo-electrochemical synergistic energy conversion mechanism and process integration. This not only overcomes the thermodynamic equilibrium limitations in traditional electrolysis but also reduces electrical energy demand by effectively coupling with medium- to high-temperature heat sources such as industrial waste heat and solar thermal energy. Therefore, this review, grounded in the physicochemical mechanisms of oxygen transport membrane reactors, systematically examines the influence of key factors, including membrane material design, catalytic interface optimization, and parameter synergy, on hydrogen production efficiency. Furthermore, it proposes a roadmap and breakthrough directions for industrial applications, focusing on enhancing intrinsic material stability, designing multi-field coupled reactors, and optimizing system energy efficiency. Green hydrogen production from water electrolysis (WE) is one of the most promising technologies to realize a decarbonized future and efficiently utilize intermittent renewable energy. Among the various WE technologies, the emerging anion exchange membrane (AEMWE) technology shows the greatest potential for producing green hydrogen at a competitive price. To achieve this goal, simple methods for the large-scale synthesis of efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts are needed. This paper proposes a very simple and scalable process for the synthesis of nanostructured NiCo- and NiFe-based electrode materials for a zero-gap AEMWE full cell. For the preparation of the cell anode, oxides with different Ni molar fractions (0.50 or 0.85) are synthesized by the sol–gel method, followed by calcination in air at different temperatures (400 or 800 °C). To fabricate the cell cathode, the oxides are reduced in a H2/Ar atmosphere. Electrochemical testing reveals that phase purity and average crystal size significantly influence cell performance. Highly pure and finely grained electrocatalysts yield higher current densities at lower overpotentials. The best performing membrane electrode assembly exhibits a current density of 1 A cm−2 at 2.15 V during a steady-state 150 h long stability test with 1 M KOH recirculating through the cell, the lowest series resistance at any cell potential (1.8 or 2.0 V), and the highest current density at the cut-off voltage (2.2 V) both at the beginning (1 A cm−2) and end of tests (1.78 A cm−2). The presented results pave the way to obtain, via simple and scalable techniques, cost-effective catalysts for the production of green hydrogen aimed at a wider market penetration by AEMWE. The integration of renewable energy with circular economy strategies offers effective pathways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while enhancing local energy independence. This study analyses three real-world projects implemented in Spain that exemplify this synergy. LIFE Smart Agromobility converts pig manure into biomethane to power farm vehicles, using anaerobic digestion and microalgae-based upgrading systems. Smart Met Value refines biogas from a wastewater treatment plant in Guadalajara to produce high-purity biomethane for the municipal fleet, demonstrating the viability of energy recovery from sewage sludge. The UNDERGY project addresses green hydrogen storage by repurposing a depleted natural gas reservoir, showing geochemical and geomechanical feasibility for seasonal underground hydrogen storage. Each project utilises regionally available resources to produce clean fuels—biomethane or hydrogen—while mitigating methane and CO2 emissions. Results show significant energy recovery potential: biomethane production can replace a substantial portion of fossil fuel use in rural and urban settings, while hydrogen storage provides a scalable solution for surplus renewable energy. These applied cases demonstrate not only the technical feasibility but also the socio-economic benefits of integrating waste valorisation and energy transition technologies. Together, they represent replicable models for sustainable development and energy resilience across Europe and beyond. Full article

Achieving climate neutrality goals is inseparable from the sustainable development of modern cities. Municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) are among the starting points when moving cities to Net-zero Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and climate neutrality. This study focuses on the analysis of the integration of green hydrogen (H2) and biomethane technologies in WWTPs, and on the impact of this integration on WWTPs’ energy neutrality. This study treats WWTP as an integrated energy system with certain inputs and outputs. Currently, such systems in most cases have a significantly negative energy balance, and, in addition, fossil fuel energy sources are used. Key findings highlight that the integration of green hydrogen production in WWTPs and the efficient utilization of electrolysis by-products can make such energy systems neutral or even positive. This study provides an analysis of the main technical presumptions for the successful integration of green hydrogen and biomethane production processes in WWTP. Furthermore, a case study of a real wastewater treatment plant is presented. Full article
