This work presents a comparative study on the structural, microstructural, and functional properties of a novel lead-free solid solution based on (1−x)(0.95(Bi0.5Na0.5)TiO3–0.05BaTiO3)–x(0.5Ba0.7Ca0.3TiO3–0.5BaTi0.8Zr0.2O3), abbreviated as (1−x)(BNT–5BT)–xBCZT, with x values ranging from 0 to 0.20. Two different synthesis routes were evaluated: a direct route, where all raw materials were mixed and processed in a single step, and an indirect route, where BNT–5BT and BCZT were pre-synthesized separately and later combined. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the formation of single-phase perovskite structures, with progressively increasing tetragonality as x increased. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM/EDS) revealed dense microstructures and secondary rod-like phases whose morphology and amount evolved with composition. Dielectric measurements indicated an enhanced relaxor behavior with increasing BCZT content, evidenced by a shift in the TF–R with frequency. The direct route resulted in more efficient dopant incorporation, leading to stronger dielectric relaxation, reduced hysteresis losses, and improved energy storage performance. The maximum energy efficiency (η) reached 43.7% for x = 0.075 via the direct route, compared to 38.0% for the same composition prepared by the indirect route. The maximum recoverable energy density (Wrec) reached 0.42 J·cm−3 for x = 0.075 via the direct route (vs. 0.40 J·cm−3 for the indirect route), with corresponding peak energy efficiencies of 43.7% and 38.0%, respectively. These findings demonstrate that (1−x)(BNT–5BT)–xBCZT ceramics synthesized via the direct route constitute a promising and scalable approach for high-efficiency, lead-free dielectric capacitors. The development of dielectric capacitors with high energy-storage density and ultrafast discharge capability is essential for next-generation pulsed power systems. In this work, (Pb, La, Ho, Zr, Ti)O3 (PLZTH) ceramics were fabricated via medium-temperature sintering (950–1100 °C) combined with Ho3+ doping to systematically tailor their energy-storage properties. This processing strategy not only mitigates Pb volatilization but also enhances compatibility with base-metal electrodes such as Ni and Cu. In addition, Ho3+ ions exhibit amphoteric doping behavior, which contributes to the enhancement of relaxor characteristics and grain refinement. H4 ceramic delivers an outstanding recoverable energy-storage density (Wrec) of 0.91 J/cm3 and a high energy efficiency (η) of 87% under 216 kV/cm, along with a power density (PD) of 28.8 MW/cm3 and an ultrafast discharge time (t0.9) of only 4.97 ns at 180 kV/cm. This study not only proposes a viable route toward high-performance medium-temperature-sintered PLZT ceramics but also elucidates the effective mechanism of Ho3+ amphoteric doping in modulating the relaxor state and properties of perovskite-based ceramics. The (1−x)Ba0.96Ca0.04TiO3−xBi(Li1/3Zr2/3)O3 (x = 0.03–0.15) ceramics were fabricated via the traditional solid reaction method. Characterization results revealed that each component exhibited a pure perovskite structure, and the average grain size significantly diminishes with increasing x. The (1−x)Ba0.96Ca0.04TiO3−xBi(Li1/3Zr2/3)O3 ceramics exhibited prominent relaxor ferroelectric behavior, whose characteristic narrow hysteresis loops effectively enhanced the energy storage performance of the material. Most importantly, the composition with x = 0.10 demonstrated exceptional energy storage properties at 150 kV/cm, achieving a high recoverable energy storage density (Wrec = 1.91 J/cm3) and excellent energy efficiency (η = 90.87%). Under the equivalent electric field, this composition also displayed a superior pulsed discharge performance, including a high current density (871 A/cm2), a high power density (67.3 MW/cm3), an ultrafast discharge time (t0.9 = 109 ns), and a discharged energy density of 1.47 J/cm3. These results demonstrate that the (1−x)Ba0.96Ca0.04TiO3−xBi(Li1/3Zr2/3)O3 ceramic system establishes a promising design paradigm for the creation and refinement of next-generation dielectrics for pulse power applications. Dielectric capacitors have become a key component for energy storage systems, owing to their exceptional power density and swift charge–discharge performance. In a series of lead-free ferroelectric ceramic materials, BaSnxTi1-xO3 (BTS) received widespread attention due to its unique properties. However, BTS ceramics with high Sn content have high efficiency (η) but low recovery energy storage density (Wrec). We incorporated the Sm element into BTS ceramics and aimed to optimize both efficiency and recoverable energy density at moderate Sn content. With the synergistic effect between Sm and Sn, the optimal composition was found at 5% Sn content with 1% low-level Sm dopants, where the energy storage density reached 0.2310 J/cm3 at 40 kV/cm. Furthermore, the thermal stability of the ceramic was investigated using temperature-dependent dielectric spectroscopy, in situ XRD, and temperature-dependent hysteresis loops. With Sm doping, the fluctuation of Wrec decreased from 18.48% to 12.01%. In general, this work not only enhances the understanding of samarium dopants but also proposes strategies for developing lead-free ferroelectric ceramics with superior energy storage properties. Lead-free ceramic materials have been widely studied since dielectric capacitors became a key component for energy storage. In this work, we adopted defect dipole engineering and improved the energy storage performance of barium zirconate titanate (BZT) ceramics by doping them with MnO2. With the increase in Mn content, the hysteresis loop changed from a conventional loop to a pinned hysteresis loop, resulting in a decrease in remnant polarization (Pr). When x = 0.02, the recoverable energy storage density (Wrec) reached 0.1561 J/cm2 @ 40 kV/cm, a 59% increase from undoped BZT. Further, XPS and EPR analyses confirmed that many oxygen vacancies were generated. We also performed SEM and TEM characterization and observed the microstructures. These results are consistent with theories suggesting that the formation of the pinned hysteresis loop is attributable to oxygen vacancies and defect dipoles. Full article

BaTiO3-based lead-free ferroelectric films with a large recoverable energy density (Wrec) and a high energy efficiency (η) are crucial components for next-generation dielectric capacitors, which are used in energy conditioning and storage applications in integrated circuits. In this study, grain-engineered (Ba0.95,Sr0.05)(Zr0.2,Ti0.8)O3 (BSZT) ferroelectric thick films (~500 nm) were prepared on Si substrates. These films were deposited at 350 °C, 100 °C lower than the temperature at which the LaNiO3 buffer layer was deposited on Pt/Ti. This method reduced the (001) grain population due to a weakened interface growth mode, while promoting volume growth modes that produced (110) and (111) grains with a high polarizability. As a result, these films exhibited a maximum polarization of ~88.0 μC/cm2, a large Wrec of ~203.7 J/cm3, and a high energy efficiency η of 81.2% (@ 6.4 MV/cm). The small-field dielectric constant nearly tripled as compared with that of the same BSZT/LaNiO3 heterostructure deposited at the same temperature (350 °C or 450 °C). The enhanced linear dielectric response, delayed ferroelectric polarization saturation, and increased dielectric strength due to the nano-grain size, collectively contributed to the improved energy storage performance. This work provides a novel approach for fabricating high-performance dielectric capacitors for energy storage applications. Full article

Flexible thin-film capacitors have gained a lot of attention in energy storage applications because of their high energy storage densities and efficient charge–discharge performances. Among these materials, antiferroelectric compounds with low residual polarization and strong saturation polarization have shown great promise. However, their comparatively low breakdown strength continues to be a major issue restricting further developments in their energy storage performance. While La3+ doping has been explored as a means to enhance the energy storage capabilities of antiferroelectric thin films, the specific influence of La3+ on breakdown strength and the underlying mechanism of phase transitions have not been thoroughly investigated in existing research. In this study, Pb1−3x/2LaxZrO3 thin films were successfully synthesized and deposited on mica substrates via the sol–gel process. By varying the concentration of La3+ ions, a detailed examination of the films’ microstructures, electrical properties, and energy storage performances was carried out to better understand how La3+ doping influences both breakdown strength and energy storage characteristics. The results show that doping with La3+ significantly improves the breakdown strength of the films, reduces the critical phase transition electric field (EF-EA), and enhances their energy storage capabilities. Notably, the Pb0.91La0.06ZrO3 thin film achieved an impressive energy storage density of 34.9 J/cm3 with an efficiency of 58.3%, and at the maximum electric field strength of 1541 kV/cm, the recoverable energy density (Wrec) was 385% greater than that of the PbZrO3 film. Additionally, the film still maintains good energy storage performance after 107 cycles and 104 bending cycles. These findings highlight the potential of flexible antiferroelectric Pb0.91La0.06ZrO3 thin films for future energy storage applications. Full article

Dielectric capacitors with a high density of recoverable energy storage are extremely desirable for a variety of uses. However, these capacitors often exhibit lower breakdown strengths and energy efficiency compared to other materials, which poses significant challenges for their practical use. We report on a novel antiferroelectric ceramic system in the present study, (1 − x){0.97[0.985(0.93Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3–0.07BaTiO3)–0.015Er)]–0.03AlN}–xNaNbO3 (x = 0, 10 wt%, 20 wt%, 30 wt%, and 40 wt%), synthesized via a conventional solid-state reaction approach. Here, (Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3–BaTiO3) is denoted as BNT–BT. We observed that varying the NaNbO3 (NN) content gradually refined the grain size of the ceramics, narrowed their hysteresis loops, and transformed their phase structure from antiferroelectric to relaxor ferroelectric. These changes enhanced breakdown strength (Eb), thus increasing the performance of energy storage. Specifically, the recoverable energy density (Wrec) and energy storage efficiency ), respectively, reached 0.67–1.06 J/cm3 and 44–88% at electric fields of 110–155 kV/cm, with the highest performance observed at 30 wt% NN doping. Additionally, over a broad range of temperature and frequency, the 70 wt% {0.97[0.985(BNT–BT)–0.015Er]–0.03AlN}–30 wt% NN ceramic demonstrated exceptional stability in energy storage. These results demonstrate the significant potential of lead-free(1 − x)({0.97[0.985(BNT–BT)–0.015Er]–0.03AlN}–xNN ceramics for the applications of high-performance energy storage. Full article

In this research, we employed a high-entropy approach in tungsten-bronze-structured ferroelectric ceramics, preparing Sr0.4Ba0.6(Zr0.2Ti0.2Sn0.2Ta0.2Nb0.2)2 (denoted as SBN40-H) ceramics through the traditional solid-state reaction technique. By utilizing the high-entropy approach, the resulting SBN40-H ceramics demonstrated extremely fine grains, averaging 0.58 μm in size. Furthermore, these ceramics possessed a high bandgap of 3.35 eV, which, when combined with the small grain size, contributed to a remarkable breakdown strength of 570.01 kV/cm. The dielectric characteristics demonstrated typical relaxation behavior and outstanding temperature stability, with a capacitance temperature coefficient (TCC) of less than 5% within the temperature range of 111–317 °C. Additionally, the SBN40-H ceramics exhibit slim P–E loops with negligible hysteresis, which is considered to be related to the existence of weakly coupled relaxors. This results in exceptional overall energy-storage properties in the SBN40-H ceramics, exhibiting a notable recoverable energy density (Wrec) of 2.68 J/cm3 and an efficiency (η) of 93.7% at 390 kV/cm, and finally achieving a remarkable temperature stability in terms of energy-storage performance with variations in Wrec and η being less than 3.5% and 4.4% from 25 to 150 °C. It is worth noting that the high-entropy approach is highly effective in reducing grain size, increasing the breakdown field strength and enhancing the dielectric temperature stability of tungsten-bronze-structured ferroelectric ceramics. Relaxor ferroelectric film capacitors exhibit high power density with ultra-fast charge and discharge rates, making them highly advantageous for consumer electronics and advanced pulse power supplies. The Aurivillius-phase bismuth layered ferroelectric films can effectively achieve a high breakdown electric field due to their unique insulating layer ((Bi2O2)2+ layer)). However, designing and fabricating Aurivillius-phase bismuth layer relaxor ferroelectric films with optimal energy storage characteristics is challenging due to their inherently stable ferroelectric properties. In this work, lead-free CaBi4-xLaxTi4O15 films were synthesized using the sol–gel technique and a weakly coupled relaxor design. On one hand, the introduction of La3+ ions weaken the dipole–dipole interactions, thereby enhancing the relaxor behavior. Alternatively, the expansion of grain size is restricted to enhance the number of grain boundaries, which possess improved insulating properties. This leads to a higher breakdown electric field. The results indicate that CaBi4-xLaxTi4O15 (x = 1.0) films exhibit excellent recoverable energy storage density (70 J/cm3) and high energy efficiency (73%). Moreover, the film exhibited good temperature stability and frequency stability. This study not only identifies a promising material for dielectric film capacitors but also demonstrates that the energy storage capabilities of Aurivillius-phase bismuth layer ferroelectric films can be effectively modulated through a design incorporating weakly coupled relaxor characteristics. Resource-exhausted cities are cities where the ratio of exploited reserves to recoverable reserves exceeds 70%. Long-term energy extraction and consumption lead to weak economic growth, idle industrial land, and ecological imbalances. It is imperative to explore sustainable development paths that are green and low-carbon. The spatial characteristics of cities and the structure of energy networks are crucial foundations for low-carbon development and energy security in cities. The main research content includes three aspects: (1) The first involves the identification of the distribution characteristics of typical resource- exhausted cities worldwide. This mainly includes coal, oil, metallurgy, forestry, and non-metallic minerals. Among them, coal resource-exhausted cities are the most numerous, mainly distributed in China, Australia, the United States, etc. (2) The second includes an analysis of the spatial characteristics of resource-exhausted cities in China. This involves taking 24 resource-exhausted prefecture-level cities in China as the research objects, integrating geographic data such as Points of Interest (POIs), and using machine learning for accurate quantitative identification and spatial delineation of urban functions. The production space and ecological space of cities show an aggregated distribution pattern, while the living space is randomly distributed. (3) The third is based on urban energy consumption data, utilizing the modified gravity model and social network analysis (SNA), and analyzing the centrality/relevance, relationship density and frequency, and accessibility. The average degree of centrality of the 17 coal-related industries is 5.529, demonstrating the energy network structure of resource-exhausted cities. This paper provides data foundations and technical methods for achieving urban energy renewal, ecosystem stability, and optimized spatial structures. Full article

Ceramic capacitors have received great attention for use in pulse power systems owing to their ultra-fast charge–discharge rate, good temperature stability, and excellent fatigue resistance. However, the low energy storage density and low breakdown strength (BDS) of ceramic capacitors limit the practical applications of energy storage technologies. In this work, we present a series of relaxor ferroelectric ceramics (1−x) [0.94 Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 –0.06BaTiO3]– x Sr0.7Bi0.2TiO3 (1-x BNT-BT- x SBT; x = 0, 0.20, 0.225, 0.25, 0.275 and 0.30) with improved energy storage performances by combining relaxor and antiferroelectric properties. XRD, Raman spectra, and SEM characterizations of BNT-BT-SBT ceramics revealed a rhombohedral–tetragonal phase, highly dynamic polar nanoregions, and a reduction in grain size with a homogeneous and dense microstructure, respectively. A high dielectric constant of 1654 at 1 kHz and low remnant polarization of 1.39 µC/cm2 were obtained with the addition of SBT for x = 0.275; these are beneficial for improving energy storage performance. The diffuse phase transition of these ceramics displays relaxor behavior, which is improved with SBT and confirmed by modified the Curie–Weiss law. The combining relaxor and antiferroelectric properties with fine grain size by the incorporation of SBT enables an enhanced maximum polarization of a minimized P-E loop, leading to an improved BDS. As a result, a high recoverable energy density Wrec of 1.02 J/cm3 and a high energy efficiency η of 75.98% at 89 kV/cm were achieved for an optimum composition of 0.725 [0.94BNT-0.06BT]-0.275 SBT. These results demonstrate that BNT-based relaxor ferroelectric ceramics are good candidates for next-generation ceramic capacitors and offer a potential strategy for exploiting novel high-performance ceramic materials. Energy storage efficiency (η) and large recoverable energy density (Wre) are necessary for antiferroelectric materials in order to develop antiferroelectric-based dielectric capacitors with exceptional energy storage capacity. In the present paper, the effect of doping La3+ on the energy storage capacity of Pb1−xLax(Hf0.45Sn0.55)0.995O3 antiferroelectric ceramics was studied. Adjusting the content of La and changing the phase structure of PLHS from antiferroelectric to relaxor ferroelectric gradually, which narrowed its hysteresis loop, yielded a high energy storage efficiency of 81.9% and the maximum breakdown field strength of 200 kV/cm when x = 2 mol%. In addition, the recoverable energy density and energy storage efficiency both showed excellent temperature stability and frequency stability in the temperature range of 10–110 °C and the frequency range of 10–100 Hz, suggesting that Pb0.98La0.02(Hf0.45Sn0.55)0.995O3 are favorable materials candidates for the preparation of pulsed-power capacitors that can be used in a wide range of conditions. Over the past decades, Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 (NBT)-based ceramics have received increasing attention in energy storage applications due to their high power density and relatively large maximum polarization. However, their high remnant polarization (Pr) and low breakdown field strength are detrimental for their practical applications. In this paper, a new solid solution (1−x)Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3–xCaHfO3 (x = 0.04, 0.08, 0.12, 0.16) was constructed by introducing CaHfO3 into NBT, and thus was prepared using a conventional solid-state reaction. With the addition of CaHfO3, the disorder of the structure increased, A-site vacancies formed, and thus oxygen vacancies were suppressed due to the replacement of the Na+ by Ca2+, resulting in the enhanced relaxation behavior and the reduced Pr, the refined grain, and improved breakdown strength. Furthermore, an optimal recoverable energy storage density (Wrec) of 1.2 J/cm3 was achieved in 0.92Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3–0.08CaHfO3 ceramics under the breakdown strength of 140 kV/cm, which is mainly attributed to the resultant defect of Na+ vacancy. This study explores the potential of β-SnSe monolayers as a promising material for ozone (O3) sensing using density functional theory (DFT) combined with the non-equilibrium Green’s function (NEGF) method. The adsorption characteristics of O3 molecules on the β-SnSe monolayer surface were thoroughly investigated, including adsorption energy, band structure, density of states (DOSs), differential charge density, and Bader charge analysis. Post-adsorption, hybridization energy levels were introduced into the system, leading to a reduced band gap and increased electrical conductivity. A robust charge exchange between O3 and the β-SnSe monolayer was observed, indicative of chemisorption. Recovery time calculations also revealed that the β-SnSe monolayer could be reused after O3 adsorption. The sensitivity of the β-SnSe monolayer to O3 was quantitatively evaluated through current-voltage characteristic simulations, revealing an extraordinary sensitivity of 1817.57% at a bias voltage of 1.2 V. This sensitivity surpasses that of other two-dimensional materials such as graphene oxide. This comprehensive investigation demonstrates the exceptional potential of β-SnSe monolayers as a highly sensitive, recoverable, and environmentally friendly O3 sensing material. Full article
