The aim of the research presented in the article is to develop a method for modifying compound curves, i.e. geometric systems composed of two (or more) circular arcs with different radii, directed in the same direction and directly connected to each other. These curves are used when connecting two directions of the railway route where one circular arc is impossible due to permanent terrain obstacles. To solve the problem, an analytical method of designing track geometric systems was used, in which individual elements of these systems are described using mathematical equations. The modification itself involves introducing appropriate transition curves between the connecting arcs. Three possibilities for such a connection were presented, resulting from the method of considering conditions related to horizontal curvature of the track axis. A comparative analysis of the obtained solutions was conducted using the developed geometric test system. The analysis was based on the curvature values determined for the considered transition curves, after assuming varying lengths of these curves. For the recommended solution to the problem, it was necessary to verify the practical feasibility of horizontal ordinate values, which could not be too small relative to the implementation error. As stated, to limit the effects of this error, the transition curve lengths should be adjusted to specific geometric situations and excessively short curves should be avoided. As a result of the conducted research, the transition curve determined with strict curvature conditions was determined to be the most advantageous. It maintains curvature continuity along its entire length, there are no abrupt changes in curvature at the edges, and the changes in curvature along the length are much smoother than in the other curves considered. Therefore, this curve should be recommended for practical use. Full article

The operation of heavy-haul railway trains with large loads results in significant cracking issues in reinforced concrete beams. Atmospheric carbon dioxide, oxygen, and moisture from the atmosphere penetrate into the beam interior through these cracks, accelerating the carbonation of the concrete and the corrosion of the steel bars. The rust-induced expansion of steel bars further exacerbates the cracking of the beam. The interaction between environmental factors and beam cracks leads to a rapid decline in the durability of the beam. To address this issue, a multi-physics field coupling durability assessment method was proposed, considering concrete beam cracking, concrete carbonation, and steel bar corrosion. The interaction among these three factors is achieved through sequential coupling, using crack width, carbonation passivation time, and steel bar corrosion rate as interaction parameters. Using this method, the deterioration morphology and stiffness degradation laws of 8 m reinforced concrete beams under different load conditions, including those of heavy and light trains in heavy-haul railways, are compared and assessed. The analysis reveals that within a 100-year service cycle, the maximum relative stiffness reduction for beams on the heavy train line is 20.0%, whereas for the light train line, it is only 7.4%. The degree of structural stiffness degradation is closely related to operational load levels, and beam cracking plays a critical role in this difference. Full article

The extended operation of high-speed railways has led to an increased incidence of tunnel lining defects, with falling debris posing a significant safety threat. Within tunnels, single-train passage and trains-crossing events constitute the most frequent operational scenarios, both generating extreme aerodynamic environments that alter debris trajectories from free fall. To systematically investigate the aerodynamic differences and underlying mechanisms governing falling debris behavior under these two distinct conditions, a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model (debris–air–tunnel–train) was developed using an improved delayed detached eddy simulation (IDDES) turbulence model. Comparative analyses focused on the translational and rotational motions as well as the aerodynamic load coefficients of the debris in both single-train and trains-crossing scenarios. The mechanisms driving the changes in debris aerodynamic behavior are elucidated. Findings reveal that under single-train operation, falling debris travels a greater distance compared with trains-crossing conditions. Specifically, at train speeds ranging from 250–350 km/h, the average flight distances of falling debris in the X and Z directions under single-train conditions surpass those under trains crossing conditions by 10.3 and 5.5 times, respectively. At a train speed of 300 km/h, the impulse of CFx and CFz under single-train conditions is 8.6 and 4.5 times greater than under trains-crossing conditions, consequently leading to the observed reduction in flight distance. Under the conditions of trains crossing, the falling debris is situated between the two trains, and although the wind speed is low, the flow field exhibits instability. This is the primary factor contributing to the reduced flight distance of the falling debris. However, it also leads to more pronounced trajectory deviations and increased speed fluctuations under intersection conditions. The relative velocity (CRV) on the falling debris surface is diminished, resulting in smaller-scale vortex structures that are more numerous. Consequently, the aerodynamic load coefficient is reduced, while the fluctuation range experiences an increase. Full article

Optimizing passenger train line planning is a complex task that involves balancing operational costs and passenger service quality. This study investigates the adjustment and optimization of train line plans to better align with passenger demand and operational constraints, while minimizing systematic costs. These costs include train operation expenses (e.g., line usage fees and station service fees), passenger travel costs, and hidden costs such as imbalances in station stops. Line usage fees refer to charges for using railway tracks, whereas station service fees cover services provided at train stations. The optimization process employs a Simulated Annealing Algorithm to adjust train compositions, capacity configurations, and stop patterns to better match passenger demand. The results indicate a 13.89% reduction in the objective function value, reflecting improved overall efficiency. Notably, most costs are reduced, including train operating costs and passenger travel costs. However, ticketing service fees—which are calculated as a percentage of passenger fare revenue—increased slightly due to additional backtracking in passenger travel paths, which raised the total fare collected. Overall, the optimization improves the operational performance of the train network, enhancing both efficiency and service quality. Full article

Regarding the distortion correction problem of large field of view wide-angle cameras commonly used in railway visual inspection systems, this paper proposes a novel online calibration method for non-specially made cooperative calibration objects. Based on the radial distortion divisor model, first, the spatial coordinates of natural spatial landmark points are constructed according to the known track gauge value between two parallel rails and the spacing value between sleepers. By using the image coordinate relationships corresponding to these spatial coordinates, the coordinates of the distortion center point are solved according to the radial distortion fundamental matrix. Then, a constraint equation is constructed based on the collinear constraint of vanishing points in railway images, and the Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm is used to found the radial distortion coefficients. Moreover, the distortion coefficients and the coordinates of the distortion center are re-optimized according to the least squares method (LSM) between points and the fitted straight line. Finally, based on the above, the distortion correction is carried out for the distorted railway images captured by the camera. The experimental results show that the above method can efficiently and accurately perform online distortion correction for large field of view wide-angle cameras used in railway inspection without the participation of specially made cooperative calibration objects. The whole method is simple and easy to implement, with high correction accuracy, and is suitable for the rapid distortion correction of camera images in railway online visual inspection. Full article

Establishing a high-precision passenger flow prediction model is a critical and complex task for the optimization of urban rail transit systems. With the development of artificial intelligence technology, the data-driven technology has been widely studied in the intelligent transportation system. In this study, a neural network model based on the data-driven technology is established for the prediction of passenger flow in multiple urban rail transit stations to enable smart perception for optimizing urban railway transportation. The integration of network units with different specialities in the proposed model allows the network to capture passenger flow data, temporal correlation, spatial correlation, and spatiotemporal correlation with the dual attention mechanism, further improving the prediction accuracy. Experiments based on the actual passenger flow data of Beijing Metro Line 13 are conducted to compare the prediction performance of the proposed data-driven model with the other baseline models. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed prediction model achieves lower MAE and RMSE in passenger flow prediction, and its fitted curve more closely aligns with the actual passenger flow data. This demonstrates the model’s practical potential to enhance intelligent transportation system management through more accurate passenger flow forecasting. Full article

This paper provides a reliability analysis of selected components in the electrical power supply systems used for railway traffic control equipment. It includes rectifiers, controllers, inverters, generators, batteries, sensors, and switching elements. The study used failure data from power supply system elements on selected railway lines. The analysis was performed using a mathematical model based on Markov processes. Based on the findings, recommendations were made to improve safety levels. The results presented in the paper could serve as a valuable source of information for operators of power supply systems in railway traffic control, helping them optimize maintenance processes and increase equipment reliability. Real-time train rescheduling is a widely used strategy to minimize knock-on delays in railway networks. While recent research has introduced intelligent solutions to railway traffic management, the tight interdependence of train timetables and the intrinsic complexity of railway networks have hindered the scalability of these approaches to large-scale systems. This paper proposes a multi-agent system (MAS) that addresses these challenges by decomposing the network into single-junction levels, significantly reducing the search space for real-time rescheduling. The MAS employs a Condorcet voting-based collaborative approach to ensure global feasibility and prevent overly localized optimization by individual junction agents. This decentralized approach enhances both the quality and scalability of train rescheduling solutions. We tested the MAS on a railway network in the UK and compared its performance with the First-Come-First-Served (FCFS) and Timetable Order Enforced (TTOE) routing methods. The computational results show that the MAS significantly outperforms FCFS and TTOE in the tested scenarios, yielding up to a 34.11% increase in network capacity as measured by the defined objective function, thus improving network line capacity. Accurate diagnostics of the railway track axis are crucial for enabling higher operational speeds of rail vehicles. Consequently, assessment methods are under continuous refinement. The precision of mobile GNSS-based measurements is influenced by external factors such as terrain obstructions and satellite geometry. This study presents an innovative approach that continuously monitors a predefined multi-receiver GNSS configuration in real time to enhance positioning accuracy. Field experiments on operational railway lines demonstrate that the proposed method significantly improves measurement reliability and reduces uncertainty compared to the conventional CQ-based quality assessment. The algorithm underlying the proposed method is formulated through analytical equations, allowing it to be implemented in any programming environment. The method’s effectiveness is demonstrated by comparing the expanded uncertainty calculated using GNSS-provided data with that obtained through the proposed approach. Full article

This study employs Hannah Arendt’s (1958) the human condition as a philosophical framework to examine walking not merely as a physical activity but as a meaningful form of environmental consciousness. Homo faber, which denotes tool making, corresponds to the nature-based railway regeneration exemplified by the Gyeongui Line Forest Park in Seoul City, South Korea. By applying walking as a method, bifurcated themes are explored: a pedestrian-provision focus on walkability and an environmentally oriented focus consisting of nature and culture, supporting the notion that environmental elements are co-experienced through the embodied activity of walking. Thematic findings are supported by generalized additive models, grounded in a between-method triangulation attempt. The results confirm the interdependencies among the park’s environment, pedestrian satisfaction, and environmental consciousness. Specifically, the environment surrounding the park, which traverses natural and cultural elements, is strongly associated with both pedestrian satisfaction and environmental sensitivity. The research reifies walking as a fundamental human condition, encompassing labor, work, and action, while arguing for heuristic reciprocity between homo faber and nature, as well as framing walking as a sustainably meaningful urban intervention. This study contributes to maturing the theoretical understanding of walking as a vital human condition and suggests practical insights for pedestrian-centered spatial transformation. Full article

Cross-line operation and express–local train coordination are both crucial for enhancing the efficiency of multi-level urban rail transit systems. Most studies address suburban railway operations in isolation, overlooking coordination and inducing supply–demand mismatches that weaken system efficiency. This study addresses the joint optimization of cross-line operation and express–local scheduling by proposing a novel train timetable model. The model determines train service plans and departure times to minimize total system cost, including train operating and passenger travel costs. A space–time network represents integrated train–passenger interactions, and an extended adaptive large neighborhood search (E-ALNS) algorithm is developed to solve the model efficiently. Numerical experiments verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The E-ALNS achieves near-optimal solutions with less than 4% deviation from Gurobi. Comparative analysis shows that the proposed hybrid operation mode reduces total passenger travel cost by 6% and improves the cost efficiency ratio by 13% compared to independent operations. Sensitivity analyses further confirm the model’s robustness to variations in transfer walking time, passenger penalties, and waiting thresholds. This study provides a practical and scalable framework for optimizing train timetables in complex cross-line transit systems, offering insights for enhancing system coordination and passenger service quality. Background: High-voltage electrical injuries (HVEIs) represent a complex and life-threatening entity, frequently involving multi-organ damage. While traditionally linked to occupational hazards, train surfing—riding on moving trains—and train climbing—scaling stationary carriages—have emerged as increasingly common causes among adolescents. Popularized via social media, these behaviors expose individuals to the invisible danger of electric arcs from 15,000-volt railway lines, often resulting in extensive burns, cardiac complications, and severe trauma. This study presents a 30-year retrospective analysis comparing cardiac biomarkers and clinical outcomes in train-surfing injuries versus work-related HVEIs. Methods: All patients with confirmed high-voltage injury (≥1000 volts) admitted to a Level 1 burn center between 1994 and 2024 were retrospectively analyzed. Exclusion criteria comprised low-voltage trauma, suicide, incomplete records, and external treatment. Clinical and laboratory parameters—including total body surface area (TBSA), Abbreviated Burn Severity Index (ABSI), electrocardiogram (ECG) findings, intensive care unit (ICU) and hospital stay, mortality, and cardiac biomarkers (creatine kinase [CK], CK-MB, lactate dehydrogenase [LDH], aspartate transaminase [AST], troponin, and myoglobin)—were compared between the two cohorts. Results: Of 81 patients, 24 sustained train-surfing injuries and 57 were injured in occupational settings. Train surfers were significantly younger (mean 16.7 vs. 35.2 years, p = 0.008), presented with greater TBSA (49.9% vs. 17.9%, p = 0.008), higher ABSI scores (7.3 vs. 5.1, p = 0.008), longer ICU stays (53 vs. 17 days, p = 0.008), and higher mortality (20.8% vs. 3.5%). ECG abnormalities were observed in 51% of all cases, without significant group differences. However, all cardiac biomarkers were significantly elevated in train-surfing injuries at both 72 h and 10 days post-injury (p < 0.05), suggesting more pronounced cardiac and muscular damage. Conclusions: Train-surfing-related high-voltage injuries are associated with markedly more severe systemic and cardiac complications than occupational HVEIs. The significant biomarker elevation and critical care demands highlight the urgent need for targeted prevention, public awareness, and early cardiac monitoring in this high-risk adolescent population. Compared to road trucks, the use of trains to move goods along railway lines is a more sustainable freight transport system. In Norway, where several main lines are single tracks, the insufficient length of many of the existing passing loops considerably restricts the operational and economic benefits of long trains. This brief technical note revolves around the possible upgrade of the Røros line connecting Oslo and Trondheim to accommodate 650 m-long freight trains as an alternative to the heavily trafficked Dovre line. Pivoting on regulatory standards, this exploratory work identifies the minimum set of infrastructure modifications required to achieve the necessary increase in capacity by extending the existing passing loops and creating a branch line. The results indicate that 8 freight train routes can be efficiently implemented, in addition to the 12 existing passenger train routes. This brief technical note employs building information modeling software Trimble Novapoint edition 2024 to position the existing railway infrastructure on topographic data and visualize the suggested upgrade. Notwithstanding the limitations of this exploratory work, dwelling on capacity calculation and the design of infrastructure upgrades, the results demonstrate that modest and well-placed interventions can significantly enhance the strategic value of a single-track rail corridor. This brief technical note sheds light on the main areas to be addressed by future studies to achieve a comprehensive evaluation of the infrastructure upgrade, also covering technical construction and economic aspects. With China’s high-speed rail network undergoing rapid expansion, turnouts constitute critical elements whose safety and stability are essential to railway operation. At present, the efficiency of wheel–rail force safety monitoring conducted in the small hours reserved for the construction and maintenance of operating lines without marking train operation lines is relatively low. To enhance the efficiency of turnout safety monitoring, in this study, a three-dimensional BIM model of the No. 42 turnout was established and a corresponding wheel–rail force monitoring scheme was devised. Collision detection for monitoring equipment placement and construction process simulation was conducted using Navisworks, such that the rationality of cable routing and the precision of construction sequence alignment were improved. A train wheel–rail force analysis program was developed in MATLAB R2022b to perform signal filtering, and static calibration was applied to calculate key safety evaluation indices—namely, the coefficient of derailment and the rate of wheel load reduction—which were subsequently analyzed. The safety of the No. 42 turnout and the effectiveness of the proposed monitoring scheme were validated, theoretical support was provided for train operational safety and turnout maintenance, and technical guidance was offered for whole-life-cycle management and green, sustainable development of railway infrastructure. Concept of an Integrated Urban Public Transport System Linked to a Railway Network Based on the Principles of a Timed-Transfer Timetable in the City of Prievidza

Urban public transport represents a fundamental pillar of a sustainable transport system and a key subsystem within the broader mobility framework in urban environments. This paper focuses on the analysis and optimization of the public transport system in the city of Prievidza and the nearby town of Bojnice in Slovakia, which currently face challenges such as low system attractiveness, operational inefficiency, and weak integration with regional railway transport. This study presents the results of a comprehensive analysis of existing public transport services in Prievidza and Bojnice, including an assessment of passenger flows, line network structure, transfer connections, and operational parameters. Based on the identified deficiencies, a new urban public transport network system is proposed, emphasizing direct links to the railway network. This methodology is developed in the context of an integrated timed-transfer timetable, with defined system time slots at the main transfer hub and a newly designed line network with standardized paths and regular intervals. The proposed system ensures significantly improved connectivity between urban transport and rail services, reduces deadhead kilometres, lowers the number of required vehicles, and leads to a reduction in operational costs by up to 20%. The resulting model serves as a transferable example of efficient service planning in medium-sized cities, with a focus on functional integration, operational efficiency, and sustainable urban development.
