Public transport companies are aware that the success of their operations largely depends on the proper sizing and optimization of their processes. Among the key activities are the maintenance and repair of the vehicle fleet. This paper presents the application of mathematical optimization methods from the field of operations research to improve the efficiency of service workshops for bus maintenance and repair. Based on an analysis of collected data using queueing theory, the authors assessed the current system performance and found that the queueing system still has spare capacity and could be downsized, which aligns with the company’s management goals. Specifically, the company plans to reduce the number of bus repair service stations (servers in a queueing system). The main question is whether the system will continue to function effectively after this reduction. Three specific downsizing solutions were proposed and evaluated using queueing theory methods: extending the daily operating hours of the workshops, reducing the number of arriving buses, and increasing the productivity of a service station (server). The results show that, under high system load, only those solutions that increase the productivity of individual service stations (servers) in the queueing system provide optimal outcomes. Other solutions merely result in longer queues and associated losses due to buses waiting for service, preventing them from performing their intended function and causing financial loss to the company. Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) and Group Rapid Transit (GRT) are classes of fully automated public transport systems, where passengers can travel in small vehicles on an interconnected, grade-separated network of guideways, non-stop, from origin to destination. PRT and GRT are considered sustainable as they are low-emission and able to attract car drivers. The parameterized cost modeling framework developed in this paper has the advantage that profitability of different PRT/GRT systems can be rapidly verified in a transparent way and in function of a variety of relevant system parameters. This framework may contribute to a more transparent, rapid, and low-cost evaluation of PRT/GRT schemes for planning and decision-making purposes. The main innovation is the introduction of the “peak hour network saturation” S: the number of vehicles in circulation during peak hour divided by the maximum number of vehicles running at line speed with minimum time headways. It is an index that aggregates the main uncertainties in the planning process, namely the demand level relative to the supply level. Furthermore, a maximum S can be estimated for a PRT/GRT project, even without a detailed demand estimation. The profit per trip is analytically derived based on S and a series of more certain parameters, such as fares, capital and maintenance costs, daily demand curve, empty vehicle share, and physical properties of the system. To demonstrate the ability of the framework to analyze profitability in function of various parameters, we apply the methods to a single vehicle PRT, a platooned PRT, and a mixed PRT/GRT. The results show that PRT services with trip length proportional fares could be profitable already for S>0.25. The PRT capacity, profitability, and robustness to tripled infrastructure costs can be increased by vehicle platooning or GRT service during peak hours. Full article

Urban population growth is intensifying pressure on mobility systems, with road transportation contributing to environmental and sustainability challenges. Policymakers must navigate complex uncertainties in addressing rising mobility demand while pursuing sustainability goals. Advanced technologies offer promise, but their real-world effectiveness in urban contexts remains underexplored. This meta-review comprised three complementary studies: a broad analysis of sustainable mobility with Norwegian case studies, and systematic literature reviews on digital twins and Big Data/AI applications in urban mobility, covering the period of 2019–2024. Using structured criteria, we synthesised findings from 72 relevant articles to identify major trends, limitations, and opportunities. The findings show that mobility policies often prioritise technocentric solutions that unintentionally hinder sustainability goals. Digital twins show potential for traffic simulation, urban planning, and public engagement, while machine learning techniques support traffic forecasting and multimodal integration. However, persistent challenges include data interoperability, model validation, and insufficient stakeholder engagement. We identify a hierarchy of mobility modes where public transit and active mobility outperform private vehicles in sustainability and user satisfaction. Integrating electrification and automation and sharing models with data-informed governance can enhance urban liveability. We propose actionable pathways leveraging Big Data and AI, outlining the roles of various stakeholders in advancing sustainable urban mobility futures. Full article

This paper presents a comprehensive analysis comparing the implementation of electric and diesel buses for public transport services in the low-density area of the City of Jastrebarsko in Croatia. It utilizes a multidimensional approach and incorporates direct and indirect costs, such as vehicle acquisition, operation, charging, maintenance, and environmental impact costs during the lifecycle of the buses. The results show that, despite the higher initial investment in electric buses, these vehicles offer savings, especially when coupled with significantly reduced emissions of pollutants, which decreases indirect costs. However, local contexts differ, leading to a need to revise whether or not a municipality can finance the procurement and operations of such a fleet. The paper utilizes a robust methodological framework, integrating a proposal based on real-world data and demand and combining it with predictive analytics to forecast long-term benefits. The findings of the paper support the introduction of buses as a sustainable solution for Jastrebarsko, which provides insights for public transport planners, urban planners, and policymakers, with a discussion about the specific issues regarding the introduction, procurement, and operations of buses of different propulsion in a low-density area. Indonesia’s worsening air pollution and traffic emissions have thrust electric vehicles (EVs) into the spotlight, but what really drives Indonesians to make the switch? This study integrates Protection Motivation Theory with green branding and policy frameworks to explain electric vehicle (EV) adoption in Indonesia. Using a nationwide survey (n = 986) and partial-least-squares structural-equation modeling, we test how environmental awareness, consumer expectancy, threat appraisal, and coping appraisal shape adoption both directly and through green brand image (GBI), while perceived policy incentives moderate the GBI–adoption link. The model accounts for 54% of the variance in adoption intention. These findings highlight that combining public awareness campaigns, compelling green brand messaging, and carefully calibrated policy incentives is essential for accelerating Indonesia’s transition to cleaner transport. Urban transport is a key driver of greenhouse gas emissions in Europe, making its decarbonization essential to achieving EU climate neutrality targets. This study examines how European strategies, such as the Green Deal, the Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy, and the Fit for 55 package, are reflected in Romania’s transport policies, with a focus on implementation challenges and urban outcomes in Bucharest. By combining policy analysis, stakeholder mapping, and comparative mobility indicators, the paper critically assesses Bucharest’s current reliance on private vehicles, underperforming public transport satisfaction, and limited progress on active mobility. The study develops a context-sensitive reform framework for the Romanian capital, grounded in transferable lessons from Western and Central European cities. It emphasizes coordinated metropolitan governance, public trust-building, phased car-restraint measures, and investment alignment as key levers. Rather than merely cataloguing policy intentions, the paper offers practical recommendations informed by systemic governance barriers and public attitudes. The findings will contribute to academic debates on urban mobility transitions in post-socialist cities and provide actionable insights for policymakers seeking to operationalize EU decarbonization goals at the metropolitan scale. The Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB) has implemented various policies to reduce car use and promote more sustainable mobility. Initiatives such as superblocks, Low Emission Zones (LEZs), and the Bicivia network aim to transform the urban model in response to environmental and congestion challenges. However, the high reliance on private vehicles for intermunicipal travel, uneven infrastructure, and social resistance to certain changes remain significant issues. This study examines the evolution of mobility patterns and assesses the effectiveness of the above policies in fostering real and sustainable change. A mixed-methods approach was adopted, which combined an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) of 2011–2024 data, trend linear regression, and a comparative international analysis. The EFA identified four key structural dimensions: traditional transport infrastructure, active mobility and bus lines, public bicycles and mixed use, and transport efficiency and punctuality. The findings reveal a clear reduction in private car use and an increase in sustainable modes of transport. This indicates that there are prospects for future transformation. Nonetheless, challenges persist in intermunicipal mobility and the public acceptance of the measures. This study provides empirical and comparative evidence and emphasizes the need for integrated metropolitan governance to achieve a resilient and sustainable urban model. Full article

The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between visual functions and road traffic accidents (RTAs) by meta-analysis of observational studies. The analysis included all drivers of motor vehicles, regardless of age, and those using private or public transport. Self-reported visual outcomes were excluded. The risk of RTA in patients with reduced visual acuity was observed in commercial drivers in cross-sectional studies (PR 1.54, 95% CI 1.26–1.88), but not in private drivers in cohort (RR 1.04, 95% CI 0.74–1.46) or case–control studies (OR 1.04, 95% CI 0.78–1.40). A non-statistically significant association between colour vision defects and RTA was observed in cross-sectional studies (PR 1.50, 95% CI 0.91–2.45). No evidence was found for an increased risk of accidents in people with reduced stereopsis. In older adults with abnormal contrast sensitivity, a weak risk of RTA was observed in cohort studies. Evidence from low-quality cross-sectional studies suggests an increased risk of RTAs among commercial drivers with reduced visual acuity. The few case–control and cohort studies identified did not show an association between accident occurrence and visual function. Attention needs to be paid to this issue to facilitate the conduct of high-quality research that can support the development of road safety policies. Full article

Large-scale events, such as festivals and public gatherings, pose serious problems in terms of traffic congestion, slow transaction processing, and security risks to transportation planning. This study proposes a blockchain-based solution for enhancing the efficiency and security of intelligent transport systems (ITS) by utilizing state channels and rollups. Throughput is optimized, enabling transaction speeds of 800 to 3500 transactions per second (TPS) and delays of 5 to 1.5 s. Prevent data tampering, strengthen security, and enhance data integrity from 89% to 99.999%, as well as encryption efficacy from 90% to 98%. Furthermore, our system reduces congestion, optimizes vehicle movement, and shares real-time, secure data with stakeholders. Practical applications include fast and safe road toll payments, faster public transit ticketing, improved emergency response coordination, and enhanced urban mobility. The decentralized blockchain helps maintain trust among users, transportation authorities, and event organizers. Our approach extends beyond large-scale events and proposes a path toward ubiquitous, Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven decision-making in a broader urban transit network, informing future operations in dynamic traffic optimization. This study demonstrates the potential of blockchain to create more intelligent, more secure, and scalable transportation systems, which will help reduce urban mobility inefficiencies and contribute to the development of resilient smart cities. Electric buses are key in the strategy towards a greenhouse-gas-neutral fleet. However, their restrictions in terms of range and refueling as well as their increased price point present new challenges for public transport companies. This study aims to address, based on real-world operational data, how energy consumption and charging behavior affect battery aging and how operational strategies can be optimized to extend battery life under realistic conditions. This article presents an energy consumption analysis with respect to ambient temperatures and average vehicle speed based exclusively on real-world data of an urban bus fleet, providing a data foundation for range forecasting and infrastructure planning optimized for public transport needs. Additionally, the State of Charge (SOC) window during operation and vehicle idle time as well as the charging power were analyzed in this case study to formulate recommendations towards a more battery-friendly treatment. The central research question is whether battery-friendly operational strategies—such as reduced charging power and lower SOC windows—can realistically be implemented in daily public transport operations. The impact of the recommendations on battery lifetime is estimated using a battery aging model on drive cycles. Finally, the reduction in CO2 emissions compared to diesel buses is estimated. Accurately estimating the energy consumption of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in real-world delivery scenarios remains a critical challenge, particularly when UAVs operate in complex urban environments and are coupled with public transportation systems. Most existing models rely on oversimplified assumptions or static mission profiles, limiting their applicability to realistic, scalable drone-based logistics. In this paper, we propose a physically-grounded and scenario-aware energy sizing methodology for UAVs operating as part of a last-mile delivery system integrated with a city’s bus network. The model incorporates detailed physical dynamics—including lift, drag, thrust, and payload variations—and considers real-time mission constraints such as delivery execution windows and infrastructure interactions. To enhance the realism of the energy estimation, we integrate computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations that quantify the impact of surrounding structures and moving buses on UAV thrust efficiency. Four mission scenarios of increasing complexity are defined to evaluate the effects of delivery delays, obstacle-induced aerodynamic perturbations, and early return strategies on energy consumption. The methodology is applied to a real-world transport network in Belfort, France, using a graph-based digital twin. Results show that environmental and operational constraints can lead to up to 16% additional energy consumption compared to idealized mission models. The proposed framework provides a robust foundation for UAV battery sizing, mission planning, and sustainable integration of aerial delivery into multimodal urban transport systems. Full article

The energy transition toward greater electrification leads to incentives in public transportation fed by catenary-powered networks. In this context, emerging technological devices such as in-motion-charging vehicles and electric vehicle charging points are expected to be operated while connected to trolleybus networks as part of new electrification projects, resulting in a significant demand for power. To enable a significant increase in electric transportation without compromising technical compliance for voltage and current at grid systems, the implementation of stationary battery energy storage systems (BESSs) can be essential for new electrification projects. A key challenge for BESSs is the selection of the optimal converter topology for charging their batteries. Ideally, the chosen converter should offer the highest efficiency while minimizing size, weight, and cost. In this context, a modular dual-active-bridge converter, considering its operation as a full-power converter (FPC) and a partial-power converter (PPC) with module-shedding control, is analyzed in terms of operation efficiencies and thermal behavior. The goal is to clarify the advantages, disadvantages, challenges, and trade-offs of both power-processing techniques following future trends in the electric transportation sector. The results indicate that the PPC achieves an efficiency of 98.58% at the full load of 100 kW, which is 1.19% higher than that of FPC. Additionally, higher power density and cost effectiveness are confirmed for the PPC. Full article

The global shift toward sustainable transportation has gained increasing interest, promoting the use of electric vehicles (EVs) as an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional vehicles as a result of a complex interaction between economic incentives, social dynamics, and environmental imperatives. This study is based on the Extended Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT2) to understand the key factors influencing consumers’ intentions in the Sultanate of Oman toward adopting electric vehicles. It is based on a mixed methodology combining quantitative data from a questionnaire of 448 participants, analyzed using ordinal logistic regression, with qualitative thematic analysis of in-depth interviews with 18 EV owners. Its results reveal that performance expectations, trust in EV technology, and social influence are the strongest predictors of EV adoption intentions in Oman. These findings suggest that some issues related to charging infrastructure, access to maintenance services, and cost-benefit ratio are key considerations that influence consumers’ intention to accept and use EVs. Conversely, recreational motivation is not a statistically significant factor, which suggests that consumers focus on practical and economic motivations when deciding to adopt EVs rather than on their enjoyment of driving the vehicle. The findings of this study provide valuable insights for decision-makers and practitioners to understand public perceptions of electric vehicles, enabling them to design effective strategies to promote the adoption of these vehicles in the emerging sustainable transportation market of the future. This study aims to estimate the CO2 emissions and carbon footprint of the public transport bus fleet in Bucharest, with a comparative analysis of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated by diesel and electric buses of the Bucharest Public Transport Company (STB S.A.) in the period 2021–2024, after the modernization of the fleet through the introduction of 130 hybrid buses and 58 electric buses. In 2024, the introduction of electric buses and the reduction in diesel bus mileage reduced GHG emissions by almost 13% compared to 2023, saving over 11 kilotons of CO2e. There was also a 2.68% reduction in the specific carbon footprint compared to the previous year, which is clear evidence of the potential of electric vehicles in achieving decarbonization targets. We have also developed two strategies, one for 2025 and one for the period 2025–2030, replacing the aging fleet with electric vehicles. This demonstrates the relevance of electric transport integrated into the sustainable development strategy for urban mobility systems and alignment with European standards, including improving air quality and living standards. Urban traffic congestion poses persistent challenges to mobility, public safety, and governance efficiency in metropolitan areas. This study proposes an intelligent traffic flow forecasting framework based on an extended Long Short-Term Memory (xLSTM) model, specifically designed for real-time congestion prediction and proactive police dispatch support. Utilizing a real-world dataset collected from over 300 vehicle detector (VD) sensors, the proposed model integrates vehicle volume, speed, and lane occupancy data at five-minute intervals. Methodologically, the xLSTM model incorporates matrix-based memory cells and exponential gating mechanisms to enhance spatio-temporal learning capabilities. Model performance is evaluated using multiple metrics, including congestion classification accuracy, F1-score, MAE, RMSE, and inference latency. The xLSTM model achieves a congestion prediction accuracy of 87.3%, an F1-score of 0.882, and an average inference latency of 41.2 milliseconds—outperforming baseline LSTM, GRU, and Transformer-based models in both accuracy and speed. These results validate the system’s suitability for real-time deployment in police control centers, where timely prediction of traffic congestion enables anticipatory patrol allocation and dynamic signal adjustment. By bridging AI-driven forecasting with public safety operations, this research contributes a validated and scalable approach to intelligent transportation governance, enhancing the responsiveness of urban mobility systems and advancing smart city initiatives.
