In recent years, food safety concerns associated with veterinary drug residues have aroused significant public attention, highlighting the critical need for continuous monitoring in both animal-derived foods and the environment to safeguard public health. Medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA), a major anabolic steroid widely used in animal husbandry, poses potential human health risks according to recent studies. Although conventional analytical techniques based on chromatography and immunological assays are effective, they often suffer from complex operations, the need for skilled personnel, high cost, and time consumption. To overcome these limitations, electrochemical immunosensors modified with advanced nanomaterials offer a promising alternative. Herein, a highly sensitive electrochemical immunosensor was developed for trace MPA detection utilizing core–shell SiO2-PEI@Ag nanoparticles as the sensing matrix. In this nanocomposite, the structural synergy between the SiO2 core and outer Ag NPs shell not only provides a high-density platform for specific antibody immobilization, but also drastically expands the electroactive surface area and accelerates electron transfer to maximize signal amplification. Benefiting from these synergistic advantages, the constructed immunosensor exhibited a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.014 ng/mL and a wide linear range of 0.03–100 ng/mL. Furthermore, the recovery rates in pork and milk samples were 91.32–97.29% and 95.14–102.54%, respectively. In addition, negligible cross-reaction was observed toward structurally related steroid hormones related to MPA and common antibiotics. The immunosensor shows good stability, reproducibility, and accuracy, demonstrating great potential as a promising candidate to complement conventional tools for future MPA residue screening. The digitalization of healthcare systems has transformed the production, storage, and sharing of clinical information. While electronic health records (EHRs) enhance care efficiency, accessibility, and continuity, they simultaneously introduce complex ethical, legal, and cybersecurity challenges that directly affect patient interests. This narrative review examines the emerging rights associated with digital health records, particularly the right to privacy and the right to be forgotten, alongside threats to confidentiality, cybersecurity, and patient safety. A comprehensive literature search was conducted across PubMed, Web of Science, MEDLINE, and the Cochrane Library. First, the right to be forgotten appears particularly relevant for oncological patients facing financial discrimination and for individuals asserting gender identity rights, yet it cannot be unconditionally extended to genetic data, given its relevance to relatives and future generations. Second, confidentiality risks are amplified by re-identification vulnerabilities, unauthorized access by personnel, and the broad connectivity of digital systems. Third, the secondary use of data from EHRs, including artificial intelligence (AI) integration, commercial exploitation, and large language model training, raises substantial privacy concerns. Fourth, ransomware, phishing, and data breaches can erode patient trust. In this article, we analyze these issues within the evolving European regulatory framework, highlighting the tension between individual privacy rights and broader public interests. We argue that robust data protection must be balanced with scientific progress and that this requires opt-in consent frameworks, staff training, and transparent AI governance. Full article

This study aims to assess the impact of the October 2023 Gaza War on water and sanitation systems and propose actionable solutions for effective management. The study adopted a mixed-methods approach (quantitative and qualitative). Primary data were collected through semi-structured interviews, targeted questionnaires, and direct field observations. Secondary data were gathered from reports by international organizations (UNRWA, OCHA, WHO), Palestinian authorities, academic research, in addition to satellite imagery and Geographic Information System (GIS) data for damage assessment. The results showed that the institutional level of emergency preparedness before the war varied significantly. Despite the existence of pre-developed emergency plans (mean score 3.26, relative weight 65.28%, p = 0.0355), there were significant shortcomings in practical staff training (mean score 2.64, relative weight 52.83%, p = 0.006), logistical readiness, and the activation of international partnerships. The study also revealed major challenges faced in providing water and sanitation services during the war, including fuel and resource shortages, safety risks for field teams, weak coordination with security agencies, lack of materials and equipment, insufficient emergency funding, coordination gaps, staff displacement, communication breakdowns, difficulty accessing water sources, area division and blockade, and loss of personnel. Specifically, the inability to access water sources was a critical challenge (mean score 4.30, relative weight 86.04%, p < 0.0001), as was indiscriminate shelling impacting field team safety (mean score 4.19, relative weight 83.77%, p < 0.0001) and lack of materials and equipment (mean score 4.15, relative weight 83.02%, p < 0.0001). Residents reported water availability only every 10–15 days, and over 70% of water and sanitation systems were damaged. While funding proposals were being prepared (mean score 3.26, relative weight 65.28%, p = 0.02), weaknesses in reporting systems and coordination of roles were observed (mean score 2.55, relative weight 50.94%, p < 0.0001). The research contributes to guiding local and international efforts towards reconstruction, enhancing resilience, and ensuring the provision of safe drinking water and adequate sanitation for the affected population, thereby reducing the risks of waterborne diseases and improving public health. Mosquito control personnel work within health departments, public works, private companies, and other agencies. These essential outdoor workers have highly specialized training and are faced with a variety of potential health and safety hazards (e.g., arthropod bites and stings, exposure to insecticides and other chemicals, working with heavy equipment, noise, heat, solar ultraviolet radiation, slips, trips, and/or falls). Mosquito control personnel undergo employer-provided and other types of training on a variety of topics from regulatory updates to new surveillance and control techniques that are required for safety purposes and to maintain their applicator license. Here, an exploratory baseline survey was conducted among members of the North Carolina Mosquito and Vector Control Association (NCMVCA) and the Virginia Mosquito Control Association (VMCA). There was a 28% response rate so results should be interpreted with caution in this pilot study. Most respondents reported utilizing ultra-low volume insecticide application equipment for controlling adult mosquitoes. Backpack sprayers were utilized by less than half of respondents. Those who reported using respirators showed higher concern about insecticide-related health effects than those who did not use respirators. Outdoor workers encounter various potential hazards and utilize several forms of personal protective equipment to reduce risks. This baseline work can be considered a starting point for implementing and strengthening occupational safety and health awareness and preventive measures for mosquito control workers. Knowledge of health and safety hazards can reduce workplace risk. Full article

Bacterial infections pose a persistent global threat to public health, driving the demand for rapid, sensitive, and specific detection technologies applicable to disease diagnosis, food safety, and environmental monitoring. Conventional methods like plate culture and polymerase chain reaction are often hampered by lengthy procedures, dependence on complex instrumentation, and requirements for specialized personnel. The emergence of nanozymes and nanomaterials with enzyme-like catalytic activities has introduced a paradigm shift in biosensing, offering superior stability, cost-effectiveness, and tunable functionality compared to their natural counterparts. This review provides a comprehensive and systematic analysis of the latest advancements in nanozyme-mediated bacterial detection. It is structured around the primary signal transduction modalities: colorimetric, fluorescence, electrochemical, and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) analyses. For each approach, we outline the fundamental design principles, which commonly integrate a synergistic cascade of specific recognition, catalytic signal amplification, and signal readout, and present representative applications for detecting key pathogens like Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella, and Listeria monocytogenes in complex samples. We evaluate and contrast the advantages, analytical performance, and appropriateness of these different platforms for various practical scenarios. Finally, we address current challenges, including achieving high specificity in complex matrices, precise modulation of nanozyme activity, and method standardization. Perspectives on future research directions aimed at developing next-generation, high-performance, and potentially portable bacterial detection systems are also provided. Full article

In response to inherent occupational and operational stress in public safety personnel (PSP), multiple policies and interventions have been implemented, often with sparse or low-quality research. The National Standard of Canada for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace (the Standard) is a comprehensive framework aimed at promoting mental health and preventing psychological harm in Canadian workplaces. This longitudinal multiple-cohort implementation science project describes mental health strategies implemented and associated organizational outcomes across five PSP organizations implementing change within the standard framework. Data were collected at two levels over a three-year span from the five public safety organizations that identified priority areas for improvement within the Standard based on local data and consultations. The organization selected and implemented a range of proactive mental health interventions, including resiliency training. Individual pre-post surveys assessed a variety of mental health disorders and work-related items. Annual organizational data included sick leave hours and extended health benefits for psychological services. Survey responses were aggregated at the organizational level. Rank-based correlation analyses (Kendall’s tau) described associations among occupational stress, work engagement, stigma, and organizational indicators. Organizations demonstrated multiple indicators of progress in meeting the Standard. Post-mental health symptom scores were positively correlated with extended health costs. Higher organizational stress scores were associated with higher extended health costs (psychological) (τ = 1.0 at pre-intervention; 0.67 post-intervention). Positive changes in organizational stress scores and higher engagement scores over the implementation process were both associated with lower average extended health costs (τ = 1.0/−1.0 respectively). Resilience scores were inversely related to health costs (τ = −0.67), consistent with the protective role of resilience. The Standard can serve as a framework for improving workplace health and safety when integrated with multi-modal action plans and structured resilience programs. Full article

Background/Objectives: Uncorrected refractive errors (UREs) are a primary cause of preventable visual impairment in children globally, impacting education and quality of life. In Jakarta, prevalence has surged to 40% post-pandemic, categorizing it as a serious public health problem. This study aimed to develop and validate the CIPSEL questionnaire as a rapid, culturally adapted screening tool for identifying visual impairment consistent with possible UREs among Indonesian school-aged children. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in South Jakarta with 131 students aged 8–12 years. The 10-item CIPSEL questionnaire, exploring visual behaviors and symptoms, was administered via face-to-face interviews. Visual acuity was assessed using a standard Snellen chart by medical personnel blinded to the questionnaire results. Diagnostic accuracy was assessed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, with optimal thresholds determined via the Youden Index and the shortest distance to (0, 1). Results: Visual impairment was identified in 26 students (19.8%). Mean CIPSEL scores were significantly higher in students with visual impairment (4.73) compared to those with normal vision (1.95). ROC analysis showed considerable diagnostic accuracy with an AUC of 0.887 (95% CI: 0.829–0.946). A safety-first cutoff of 2.5 prioritized sensitivity (96.2%), while a balanced cutoff of 3.5 provided 80.8% sensitivity and 79.0% specificity. A tiered risk system (Low, Medium, and High) demonstrated a robust statistical association with actual clinical findings (Cramer’s V = 0.534, p < 0.001). Conclusions: CIPSEL is a reliable and scalable screening tool for the early detection of visual impairment in Indonesian children. Its tiered risk stratification framework facilitates nuanced clinical decision-making and efficient resource allocation in school-based settings. Its accessibility for non-medical personnel and potential for digital integration support national efforts toward universal eye health. Full article

Public Safety Personnel (PSP) face numerous potentially psychologically traumatic events in the line of duty. Resilience courses intended to mitigate the effects of operational stress injuries in this population—many of which are available online—have proliferated in recent years. An environmental scan yielded 15 courses that met all inclusion criteria. Courses were required to be offered for $250 or less and had to be created and/or hosted in Canada. Courses focused on individual (n = 7), family (n = 2), or workplace (n = 6) resilience. A qualitative content analysis was conducted. Data were extracted from public-facing documents and course materials, and supplemented by additional text materials and contacting program staff for clarification, when necessary. Coding and synthesis were completed in iterative team meetings. Courses were compared across numerous dimensions, including focus, intended audience, cost, enrollment details, length, instructional style, customization for PSP, and completion requirements. Nearly half of the courses (46.7%) were available free of charge. Outcome data were available for four of the courses, with most studies showing initial gains in resilience, skills, knowledge, attitudes, intentions, and/or behaviors, but with evidence of skill decay over time. The potential benefit of short refresher sessions warrants further investigation. Full article

In public safety scenarios, the precise detection and positioning of prohibited weapons such as firearms and knives along with the involved personnel are the core pre-requisite technologies for violent risk warning and emergency response. However, in security surveillance scenarios, there are common problems such as object occlusion, difficulty in capturing small-sized weapons, and complex background interference, which lead to the shortcomings of existing general object detection models in the tasks of detecting and locating security-related objects, including poor adaptability, low detection accuracy, and insufficient robustness in complex scenarios. Therefore, this paper proposes a threat object detection framework for security scenarios (PDGV-DETR) based on adaptive dynamic convolution and cross-scale semantic fusion, specifically optimized for the detection and positioning tasks of weapons and personnel objects in static security surveillance images. This research focuses on category recognition at the object level and pixel-level spatial positioning, and does not involve the classification and identification of violent behaviors based on temporal information. There are clear technical boundaries and scene limitations between the two. This framework is optimized through three core modules: designing a dynamic hierarchical channel interaction convolution module to reduce computational complexity while enhancing the ability to detect occluded and incomplete objects; constructing an improved bidirectional hybrid feature pyramid network, combining the cross-scale fusion module to strengthen multi-scale feature expression, and adapting to the simultaneous detection requirements of small weapon objects and large personnel objects; and introducing a global semantic weaving and elastic feature alignment network to solve the problem of low discrimination between objects and complex backgrounds. Under the same experimental configuration, the proposed model is verified against current mainstream models on typical datasets: on a dataset of 2421 conflict scene personnel violent images, the peak average precision mAP50 of PDGV-DETR reached 85.9%. Through statistical verification, compared with the baseline model RT-DETR with an average value ± standard deviation of 0.840 ± 0.007, the average value ± standard deviation of PDGV-DETR reached 0.858 ± 0.004, demonstrating statistically significant performance improvement, with a p-value less than 0.01. This model can accurately complete the task of locating the object area of personnel, and compared with the deformable DETR, the accuracy improvement rate reached 15.1%.; on the weapon-specific dataset OD-WeaponDetection, the mAP for gun and knife detection reached 93.0%, improving by 2.2% compared to RT-DETR. Compared to the performance fluctuations of other general object detection models in complex security scenarios, PDGV-DETR not only has better detection and positioning accuracy for security-related objects, but also significantly improves the generalization and stability of the model. The results show that PDGV-DETR effectively balances the accuracy of positioning, detection, and computational efficiency, accurately completing end-to-end detection and positioning of weapon and personnel objects in static security surveillance images, demonstrating highly competitive performance in the detection and positioning of security-related objects in security scenes, providing core object-level pre-processing technology support for scenarios such as public area monitoring, intelligent video monitoring, and early warning of violent risks, and providing basic data for subsequent violent behavior recognition based on temporal data. Firefighters and correctional workers are highly exposed to potentially traumatic events, but research shows that resiliency training may help support their mental health. Both occupations remain men-dominated and highly masculinized, creating challenges for women public safety personnel (PSP) and reinforcing stigma about mental health as a feminized topic. This exploratory qualitative study examines the gender dynamics of peer resiliency training for firefighters and correctional officers in Canada. Based on interviews with 10 trainers from three provinces, we developed three key themes. First, mental health is constructed as a “feminine” topic, which may create access barriers for men, but also for women who wish to avoid marginalization. Second, gendered beliefs shape perceptions of trainers’ credibility and skills. Men trainers are respected for performing masculinity, while respect for women trainers stems from stereotypes about their maternal “nature”. Such beliefs may increase respect for mental health topics while further entrenching gendered stereotypes. Third, a gender stereotyping paradox exists regarding the roles of women in these occupations. That is, mental health training may provide a leadership pathway for women PSP while simultaneously “pigeonholing” them into emotional-labour roles. We conclude that peer resiliency training is best positioned as the responsibility of both men and women. Full article

Controlling radiation doses at potential radioactive facilities is critical to ensuring the safety of both personnel and the public. At the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab), multiple sensors are deployed around the three experimental halls to monitor key parameters, including single-beam current, energy levels, current leakage, and radiation values during accelerator operations. In this study, we developed a Multi-task Transformer model, MTL_TX, to accurately estimate radiation doses at sensor locations based on historical data, with the aim of enhancing safety in accelerator facilities and surrounding public areas. To improve estimation accuracy, we integrated two innovative components into the proposed model: hierarchical feature embedding (HFE) and multi-level decomposition attention (MDA). Additionally, the multi-task learning (MTL) framework effectively leverages correlations among multiple sensors, enabling individual estimations for each sensor. MTL_TX achieved outstanding results on data collected in 2018, with an MSE of 0.1464, an RMSE of 0.2353, and an R2 score of 0.8584. Furthermore, when trained on 2018 data, MTL_TX exhibited excellent generalization capability to unseen datasets from 2016 to 2019, achieving an MSE of 0.1407, an RMSE of 0.2263, and an R2 score of 0.8831. These results demonstrate a significant improvement over existing state-of-the-art models. Full article

Gyrovirus galga 1 (GyG1) can infect a variety of animals and humans, but prevention and control strategies are limited, which endangers the healthy development of the poultry breeding industry and has a potential impact on public health safety. The live poultry market (LPM) connects the production and consumption ends, and the pathogen may spread across regions through transportation and personnel flow. To understand the prevalence of GyG1 in Guangxi, 3482 samples from LPMs, namely, 2693 chicken throat and cloacal swabs and 789 environmental samples collected in Guangxi from December 2019 to December 2024, were assayed by PCR. The results revealed that GyG1 was present in chicken and environmental samples from LPMs in Guangxi, China, with positivity rates of 17.08% and 13.31%, respectively. Eight GyG1-positive samples were randomly selected, including 5 chicken swab samples and 3 environmental samples for whole-genome amplification. The amino acids encoded by the three ORFs were analysed, and some mutation sites unique to these 8 variants were found. The homology between the 8 GyG1 genomes and 36 reference sequences was 96.8–99.8%. The homology of the VP1 gene sequence was 96.5–99.9%, and the homology of the amino acid sequence was 99.4–100%. A phylogenetic tree was constructed on the basis of the 8 GyG1 genomes and 36 GyG1 reference genome sequences from 14 different species (8 from zoos) in this study. The 44 sequences were divided into three branches constituting groups A, B and C, with the 8 novel strains classified into group A2. Recombination analysis predicted that two recombination events in the GyG1 sequence were associated with the emergence of Guangxi strain GX-AGV2-202109-5. This study clarified the prevalence and molecular characteristics of GyG1 in LPMs in Guangxi, China, were clarified for the first time, providing important data supporting the prevention and control of GyG1 infection and providing a reference for further understanding the epidemiology and genetic diversity of GyG1. The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the urgent need for rapid, reliable, and safe laboratory workflows that ensure both diagnostic accuracy and biosafety for laboratory personnel. We developed a comprehensive approach for SARS-CoV-2 detection using saliva-based RT-qPCR that spans the entire process from sample transfer to final disposal. This workflow integrates biosafety principles with efficient diagnostic procedures, ensuring safe handling, minimized exposure risks, and reliable molecular testing. Critical components included biosecurity, standardized protocols for sample receipt, secure transfer, safe processing, and environmentally responsible disposal. By applying a holistic safety framework, we not only protected laboratory staff during the pandemic but also established a model that can inform preparedness for future emerging infectious disease threats. This approach demonstrates how laboratory safety and diagnostic efficiency can be simultaneously achieved, offering a reference for institutions seeking to balance biosafety and public health needs in outbreak situations. Objectives: Public safety personnel, such as police and firefighters, face high physical demands during emergencies, including compressions-only cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) under fatigue. This study aimed to evaluate a High-Intensity Functional Training (HIFT) program, the Public Safety Heroes Workout (PUSH), designed to enhance emergency readiness. Methods: Fifteen active-duty public safety officers participated in a pilot study. The PUSH workout included tasks like sandbag carries and burpee box jumps, interspersed with chest compressions (CC). Physiological responses, including lactate levels, heart rate, and Compressions-only CPR quality, were measured. Results: The PUSH workout induced significant metabolic stress, with lactate levels rising from 2.2 to 14.8 mmol·L−1. Heart rates peaked at 170 bpm, indicating high cardiovascular demand. Compressions-only CPR quality remained high, with firefighters outperforming police in compression rate. Conclusions: The PUSH workout effectively simulates the physical demands of emergency situations, enhancing readiness and compressions-only CPR performance under fatigue. This training model could be applied to other first responders and CrossFit® athletes. Full article

Objectives: This study investigates empathy levels among the public safety personnel and their relationship with current selection indicators (morphological, neuromuscular, and psychological characteristics), highlighting the importance of the topic and its potential for further research. Methods: The research was conducted on a sample of 136 police and national security students. The cross-sectional design was applied. Empathy was assessed with the Interpersonal Reactivity Index. Basic morphological characteristics were measured with a portable stadiometer and the InBody 720 device. Neuromuscular characteristics were measured using a handgrip strength test with a sliding device that measures isometric finger flexor force. Psychological characteristics were assessed using the Big Five Plus Two, the Mental Toughness Index, and the Dark Triad Dirty Dozen questionnaires. Results: Numerous significant differences between female and male participants, as well as gender-specific correlation patterns, were revealed. Female participants expressed more fantasy (3.23 ± 1.05), empathic concern (3.71 ± 0.75), and personal distress (1.76 ± 0.67) than males (2.84 ± 0.84; 3.37 ± 0.71; 1.5 ± 0.53). Among them, negative correlations of psychological distress with conscientiousness (ρ = −0.66) and mental toughness (ρ = −0.59) stand out. Conclusions: This study indicates the possible existence of correlations between empathy, neuromuscular, morphological, and psychological characteristics in public safety personnel of both genders, with gender-specific patterns. Results indicate opportunities for further research aimed at improving the efficiency of the existing selection system. Full article
