The scope and scale of commercial captive lion breeding (CLB) in South Africa have rapidly increased since the 1990s. We conducted a qualitative systematic review using the PRISMA protocol to determine whether CLB provides a sustainable supply side intervention to reduce pressure on wild lion populations. A search was performed using three academic databases for sources published between 2008 and 2023. We collated and reviewed the data using an evaluation framework to determine the potential benefits and threats of CLB in the context of conservation. Among the 126 peer-reviewed and 37 grey literature articles identified, we found evidence suggesting that the framework’s criteria were not fully met, raising concerns that CLB may facilitate the demand for lions, their parts, and derivatives. Our findings further indicate a reasonable cause to doubt that the CLB provides a sustainable supply side intervention to meet the commercial demand for lions, their parts, and derivatives. This could adversely impact conservation of wild lion populations. We conclude that further research is required to effectively evaluate the purported conservation benefits of CLB. These insights may also have implications for the policy and governance of commercial predator breeding operations in South Africa and globally. Full article

Background/Objective: Executive functions (EFs) are essential in the daily management of arthritis, as they influence treatment adherence, decision-making, and the ability to cope with disease-related challenges. The objective of this study was to compare EFs alongside functional status and quality of life in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and examine their associations with disease activity and clinical variables. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 140 patients (70 RA, 70 PsA) were assessed using the Stroop-TBAG, Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), and Adult Executive Functioning Inventory (ADEXI). Functional status and quality of life were measured with the Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ) and WHOQOL-BREF, respectively. Correlations with disease activity (DAS28-CRP), age, and disease duration were examined. Results: RA patients had significantly higher disease activity and longer disease duration. They showed poorer performance on the Stroop Test (color–word time: 61.6 ± 14.8 vs. 52.4 ± 10.9 s, p < 0.001; errors: 3.2 ± 2.1 vs. 2.1 ± 1.5, p = 0.001), more WCST perseverative errors (p = 0.002), and higher ADEXI inhibition scores (13.9 ± 2.5 vs. 12.9 ± 3.0, p = 0.013). DAS28-CRP was correlated with EF impairments, disability, and poorer quality of life in RA (p < 0.05). In PsA, EFs remained relatively stable, although higher disease activity was associated with worse HAQ scores (p = 0.001). Treatment type was not linked to EF, but patients on combination therapy reported lower physical (p = 0.009) and psychological (p = 0.014) quality of life, along with higher HAQ scores (p = 0.016). Conclusions: This study revealed that patients with RA exhibit more pronounced executive dysfunction, along with lower ADL skills and quality of life compared to those with PsA. These findings highlight the need for multidimensional assessment strategies in inflammatory arthritis, especially in RA, where cognitive and functional outcomes are closely tied to clinical burden. Obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and steatohepatitis associated with metabolic dysfunction (MASLD) are on the rise and pose serious health challenges worldwide. In recent years, researchers have gained a better understanding of the important role of the gut microbiota in the development and progression of these diseases. Intestinal dysbiosis can contribute to the occurrence of increased intestinal permeability, inflammation and reduced numbers of commensal bacteria. In obesity, these changes contribute to chronic low-grade inflammation and deregulated metabolism. In MASLD, gut microbiota dysbiosis can promote liver fibrosis and impair bile acid metabolism, while in T2DM, they are associated with impaired glycemic control and insulin resistance. Regular physical activity has a positive effect on the composition of the gut microbiota, increasing its diversity, modulating its metabolic functions, strengthening the intestinal barrier and reducing inflammation. These findings suggest that exercise and microbiota-targeted interventions may play an important role in the prevention and treatment of metabolic diseases. Full article

Mediating Impact of Intranasal Oxytocin on the Interaction Between Irritability and Reactive Aggression in Youth with Severe Irritability

Objective: Irritability and reactive aggression are transdiagnostic features that are predictive of adverse long-term outcomes. This investigation examined whether intranasal oxytocin administration impacts the interaction between irritability and reactive aggression, and whether these effects can be detected at a neural level via a facial expression processing task during functional MRI (fMRI). Methods: In this study, 40 children and adolescents with severe irritability and psychiatric diagnoses of disruptive mood and behavioral disorders were assigned to either intranasal oxytocin or placebo administration over a 3-week period in a randomized, double-blind trial (ClinicalTrials, NCT02824627). Clinical measures and fMRI during a facial expression processing task were collected pre- and post-intervention. Brain regions sensitive to oxytocin administration were determined using whole-brain statistical analyses, with post hoc analyses to determine whether changes in the neural activity mediated the relationship between changes in irritability and reactive aggression across the intervention period. Results: Youth who received intranasal oxytocin administration exhibited significant decreases in irritability and reactive aggression compared to their counterparts in the placebo group. Further, oxytocin administration was associated with significant increases in neural activity in the right superior prefrontal cortex, which fully mediated the relationship between improvements in irritability and improvements in reactive aggression. Conclusions: Intranasal oxytocin significantly reduced irritability and reactive aggression in youth, as well as neural activity in the prefrontal cortex, such that increases in the cortical activity fully mediated the relationship between changes in irritability and reactive aggression. Taken together, these findings may reflect oxytocin-related enhancements in emotional regulation in youth with severe irritability, a potential therapeutic mechanism for mitigating reactive aggression. With rapid global aging, the community environment has become a critical factor influencing cognitive health in older adults. However, most existing studies focus on single environmental attributes and rely on linear analytical methods, which fail to capture the complex and synergistic effects of community features. Guided by an integrated theoretical perspective on environmental psychology, aging, and cognitive health, this study examines how multiple community environmental factors jointly affect cognitive function in elderly people. A case study was conducted among 215 older residents in Shanghai, China. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) identified the following five key dimensions of community environment: pedestrian friendliness, blue–green spaces, infrastructure, space attractiveness, and safety. We then applied both Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) and Fuzzy Set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) to reveal linear and configurational relationships. The findings showed that pedestrian friendliness, blue–green spaces, and space attractiveness significantly enhance cognitive health, while fsQCA highlighted multiple pathways that underscore the non-linear and synergistic interactions among environmental features. These results provide theoretical insights into the mechanisms linking community environments and cognitive function and offer practical guidance for designing age-friendly communities. Full article

This systematic review aims to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of the most effective identification protocols used to detect giftedness in primary school students, intended to be used by teachers, parents, and diagnostic professionals. This review, registered in PROSPERO (CRD420251064093), analyzed studies published between 2019 and 2024 in the PsycINFO, Web of Science, and Scopus databases. It included articles published in English or Spanish and focused on multidisciplinary fields. A total of 17 studies were selected and evaluated for quality using the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale. The findings highlight the effectiveness of using multiple tools in the identification process, grouped into teacher nominations, family nominations, and tools for diagnostic professionals. This multidimensional approach helps reduce false negatives and supports the identification of underrepresented and twice-exceptional students. In conclusion, the identification of giftedness should be grounded in methods that prioritize general cognitive abilities over IQ scores and academic achievements. Full article

Focal chondral defects of the knee are a common cause of pain and functional limitation in active individuals and may predispose to early degenerative joint changes. Given the limited regenerative capacity of hyaline cartilage, biologically based surgical strategies have emerged to promote tissue repair and restore joint function. This narrative review critically examines current treatment approaches that rely on autologous cell sources and scaffold-supported regeneration. Particular emphasis is placed on techniques that stimulate endogenous repair or support chondrocyte-based tissue restoration through the use of autologous biomaterial constructs. The influence of lesion morphology, joint biomechanics, and patient-specific variables on treatment selection is discussed in detail, focusing on the differences between tibiofemoral and patellofemoral involvement. Biologically driven approaches have shown promising mid- to long-term outcomes in selected patients, and are increasingly favoured over traditional methods in specific clinical scenarios. However, the literature remains limited by heterogeneity in study design, follow-up duration, and outcome measures. This review aims to provide an evidence-based, morphology-informed framework to support the clinical decision-making process in the management of knee cartilage defects. Full article

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) remains significantly underdiagnosed in women, resulting in a persistent gender gap with important clinical, functional, and psychosocial implications. This narrative review explores the multifactorial barriers contributing to diagnostic disparities, including the male-oriented structure of current diagnostic criteria, the prevalence of co-occurring psychiatric conditions, and the phenomenon of social camouflaging shaped by culturally reinforced gender norms. These factors frequently lead to delayed identification, clinical misinterpretation, and suboptimal care. The review synthesizes evidence from clinical, psychological, and sociocultural research to demonstrate how the under-recognition of ASD in women impacts mental health outcomes, access to education, occupational stability, and overall quality of life. Special emphasis is placed on the consequences of missed or late diagnoses for healthcare delivery and the educational needs of clinicians involved in ASD assessment and care. This article concludes with actionable, evidence-based recommendations for enhancing diagnostic sensitivity, developing gender-responsive screening strategies, and integrating training on female autism presentation into medical and allied health education. Addressing these challenges is essential to reducing diagnostic inequities and ensuring timely, accurate, and person-centered care for autistic women throughout their lifespan. Full article

Background: Clinical assessment of balance and postural disorders is usually carried out through several common practices including tests such as the Subjective Visual Vertical (SVV) and Limit of Stability (LOS). Nowadays, several cutting-edge technologies have been proposed as supporting tools for stability evaluation. Extended Reality (XR) emerges as a powerful instrument. This proof-of-concept study aims to assess the feasibility and potential clinical utility of a novel MR-based framework integrating HoloLens 2, Wii Balance Board, and Azure Kinect for multimodal balance assessment. An innovative test is also introduced, the Innovative Dynamic Balance Assessment (IDBA), alongside an MR version of the SVV test and the evaluation of their performance in a cohort of healthy individuals. Results: All participants reported SVV deviations within the clinically accepted ±2° range. The IDBA results revealed consistent sway and angular profiles across participants, with statistically significant differences in posture control between opposing target directions. System outputs were consistent, with integrated parameters offering a comprehensive representation of postural strategies. Conclusions: The MR-based framework successfully delivers integrated, multimodal measurements of postural control in healthy individuals. These findings support its potential use in future clinical applications for balance disorder assessment and personalized rehabilitation. Full article

Electric bikes (e-bikes) offer a low-carbon, space-efficient solution for campus mobility, yet their sustainable potential is increasingly challenged by patterns of non-compliant use, including speeding, informal parking, and unauthorized charging. This study integrates the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to examine the cognitive and contextual factors that shape such behaviors among university students. Drawing on a survey of 408 e-bike users and structural equation modeling, the results show that non-compliance is primarily driven by perceived usefulness, ease of action, and behavioral feasibility, with affective and normative factors playing indirect, reinforcing roles. Importantly, actual behavior is influenced not only by intention but also by students’ perceived capacity to act within low-enforcement environments. These findings highlight the need to align behavioral perceptions with sustainability goals. The study contributes to sustainable mobility governance by clarifying key psychological pathways and offering targeted insights for designing perception-sensitive interventions in campus transport systems. Furthermore, by promoting compliance-oriented campus mobility, this research highlights a pathway toward enhancing the resilience of transport systems through behavioral adaptation within semi-regulated environments. The present study explores the innovative application of virtual reality (VR) in conducting the Radial Arm Maze (RAM) task, a performance-based test traditionally utilized for assessing spatial memory. This study aimed to develop a gamified version of the RAM implemented in immersive VR and investigate the interaction between the sense of presence, movement features, and performance within the RAM. We developed software supporting a head-mounted display (HMD), addressing prior limitations in the scientific literature concerning user interaction, data collection accuracy, operational flexibility, and immersion level. This study involved a sample of healthy young adults who engaged with the immersive VR version of the RAM, examining the influence of VR experience variables (sense of presence, motion sickness, and usability) on RAM performance. Notably, it also introduced the collection and analysis of movement features within the VR environment to ascertain their impact on performance outcomes and their relationship with VR experience variables. The VR application developed is notable for its user-friendliness, adaptability, and integration capability with physiological monitoring devices, marking a significant advance in utilizing VR for cognitive assessments. Findings from our study underscore the importance of VR experience factors in RAM performance, highlighting how a heightened sense of presence can predict better performance, thereby emphasizing engagement and immersion as crucial for task success in VR settings. Additionally, this study revealed how movement parameters within the VR environment, specifically speed and directness, significantly influence RAM performance, offering new insights into optimizing VR experiences for enhanced task performance. Method: To address the challenge of low recognition accuracy in small-sample, single-channel epileptic electroencephalogram (EEG) signals, this study proposes an automated seizure detection method using a micro-capsule network. First, we propose a dimensionality-increasing transformation technique for single-channel EEG signals to meet the network’s input requirements. Second, a streamlined micro-capsule network is designed by optimizing and simplifying the framework’s architecture. Finally, EEG features are encoded as feature vectors to better represent spatial hierarchical relationships between seizure patterns, enhancing the framework’s adaptability and improving detection accuracy. Result: Compared to existing EEG-based detection methods, our approach achieves higher accuracy on small-sample datasets while maintaining a reduction in computational complexity. Conclusions: By leveraging its micro-capsule network architecture, the framework demonstrates superior classification accuracy when analyzing single-channel epileptiform EEG signals, significantly outperforming both convolutional neural network-based implementations and established machine learning methodologies. WAIS-IV Cognitive Profiles in Italian University Students with Dyslexia

This study investigated the cognitive profiles of Italian university students with dyslexia using the WAIS-IV, comparing them to peers without specific learning disorders. Seventy-one participants took part: 36 with a diagnosis of dyslexia and 35 matched controls. While dyslexic adults showed lower Full Scale IQ (FSIQ) scores compared to controls, their scores remained within the average range. They showed deficits in Working Memory Index (WMI) and Processing Speed Index (PSI) but performed similarly to controls in Verbal Comprehension Index (VCI) and Perceptual Reasoning Index (PRI). Significant group differences also emerged in Arithmetic Reasoning, Symbol Search, and Coding subtests. Logistic regression identified WMI and PSI as the most reliable predictors of dyslexia, showing a good predictive value in discriminating between adults with and without dyslexia. Additionally, dyslexic adults displayed lower Cognitive Proficiency Index (CPI) scores relative to their General Ability Index (GAI), and lower FSIQ scores compared to controls. Overall, dyslexic adults exhibit a distinctive cognitive profile with strengths and weaknesses. This pattern can aid in dyslexia diagnosis, particularly in individuals who have compensated through extensive reading experience in a highly regular orthography. Full article

Early Childhood Education Quality for Toddlers: Understanding Structural and Process Quality in Chilean Classrooms

Despite extensive research on early childhood education (ECE) quality at the preschool level, toddler settings remain comparatively understudied, particularly in Chile and Latin America. Research suggests that quality ECE strengthens child development, while low-quality services can be harmful. ECE quality comprises structural features like ratios and classroom resources, and process features related to interactions within classrooms. This study examines how process and structural quality indicators are related in nurseries serving disadvantaged backgrounds. Data were collected from 51 Chilean urban classrooms serving children aged 12–24 months. Classrooms were evaluated using the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) for toddlers, questionnaires, and checklists. Latent Profile Analysis identified process quality patterns, while multinomial regression examined associations with structural quality indicators. The results revealed low-to-moderate process quality across classrooms (M = 4.78 for Emotional and Behavioral Support; M = 2.35 for Engaged Support for Learning), with three distinct quality clusters emerging. Marginally significant differences were found between high- and low-performing clusters regarding classroom space (p = 0.06), number of toys (p = 0.08), and staff educational credentials (p = 0.01–0.07). No significant differences emerged for group sizes or adult-to-child ratios, which are heavily regulated in Chile. These findings underscore the need to strengthen quality assurance mechanisms ensuring all children access quality ECE. Full article
