This paper presents the design, implementation, and experimental validation of a Condition Monitoring (CM) circuit for SiC-based Power Electronics Converters (PECs). The paper leverages in situ drain–source resistance (Rds,on) measurements, interfaced with cloud connectivity for data processing and lifetime assessment, addressing key limitations in current state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods. Traditional approaches rely on expensive data acquisition systems under controlled laboratory conditions, making them unsuitable for real-world applications due to component variability, time delay, and noise sensitivity. Furthermore, these methods lack cloud interfacing for real-time data analysis and fail to provide comprehensive reliability metrics such as Remaining Useful Life (RUL). Additionally, the proposed CM method benefits from noise mitigation during switching transitions by utilizing delay circuits to ensure stable and accurate data capture. Moreover, collected data are transmitted to the cloud for long-term health assessment and damage evaluation. In this paper, experimental validation follows a structured design involving signal acquisition, filtering, cloud transmission, and temperature and thermal degradation tracking. Experimental testing has been conducted at different temperatures and operating conditions, considering coolant temperature variations (40 °C to 80 °C), and an output power of 7 kW. Results have demonstrated a clear correlation between temperature rise and Rds,on variations, validating the ability of the proposed method to predict device degradation. Finally, by leveraging cloud computing, this work provides a practical solution for real-world Wide Band Gap (WBG)-based PEC reliability and lifetime assessment. Full article

Modular multilevel converters (MMCs) are widely used in power-conversion applications, including distributed energy storage integration, because of their scalability, high efficiency, and reduced harmonic distortion. Integrating battery storage systems into MMC submodules using dual active bridge (DAB) converters provides electrical isolation and reduces voltage stress, harmonics, and common-mode issues. However, voltage fluctuations due to the battery state of charge can compromise the zero-voltage switching (ZVS) operation of a DAB and increase the reactive power circulation, leading to higher losses and reduced system performance. To address these challenges, this study investigated an active control strategy for submodule voltage regulation in an MMC with DAB-based battery integration. Assuming single-phase-shift modulation, two control strategies were evaluated. The first strategy regulated the DAB voltage on one side to match the battery voltage on the other, scaled by the high-frequency transformer turns ratio, which facilitated the ZVS operation and reduced the reactive power. The second strategy optimized this voltage to minimize the total power-conversion losses. The proposed control strategies improved the efficiency, particularly at low power levels, achieving several percentage points of improvement compared to maintaining a constant voltage. Full article

This work presents a comprehensive study of the structural, luminescent, and photoconversion properties of epitaxial composite phosphor converters based on single crystalline films of Ce3+-activated Ca2−xY1+xMg1+xSc1−xSi3O12:Ce (x = 0–0.25) (CYMSSG:Ce) garnet, grown using the liquid phase epitaxy (LPE) method on single-crystal Y3Al5O12 (YAG) and YAG:Ce substrates. The main goal of this study is to elucidate the structure–composition–property relationships that influence the photoluminescence and photoconversion efficiency of these film–substrate composite converters, aiming to optimize their performance in high-power white light-emitting diode (WLED) applications. Systematic variation in the Y3+/Sc3+/Mg2+ cationic ratios within the garnet structure, combined with the controlled tuning of film thickness (ranging from 19 to 67 µm for CYMSSG:Ce/YAG and 10–22 µm for CYMSSG:Ce/YAG:Ce structures), enabled the precise modulation of their photoconversion properties. Prototypes of phosphor-converted WLEDs (pc-WLEDs) were developed based on these epitaxial structures to assess their performance and investigate how the content and thickness of SCFs affect the colorimetric properties of SCFs and composite converters. Clear trends were observed in the Ce3+ emission peak position, intensity, and color rendering, induced by the Y3+/Sc3+/Mg2+ cation substitution in the film converter, film thickness, and activator concentrations in the substrate and film. These results may be useful for the design of epitaxial phosphor converters with tunable emission spectra based on the epitaxially grown structures of garnet compounds. Full article

As the range of applications for amphibious robots expands, higher demands are being placed on their working time and working range. This paper proposed a power supply system for an amphibious robot based on wave energy generation, which can convert wave energy into electric energy to enhance endurance. First, the no-load induced electromotive force, magnetic line distribution vector diagrams, and magnetic density cloud diagrams of the cylindrical and flat generators were compared by finite element simulation, which determined that the cylindrical structure has better power generation performance. Then, the electromagnetic parameters of the cylindrical generator were analyzed using Ansys Maxwell, and the final dimensions were determined. Finally, the wave motion was simulated using a swing motor, and the effects of different cutting speeds for the actuator before and after rectification, as well as series-parallel capacitance on the power generation performance of the designed generator, were experimentally analyzed. This provides a potential solution to enhance the working time and working range of amphibious robots. Full article

Dual-active bridge (DAB) converters have emerged as a preferred topology in electric vehicle charging and energy storage applications, owing to their structurally symmetric configuration and intrinsic galvanic isolation capabilities. However, conventional triple-phase shift (TPS) control strategies face significant challenges in maintaining high efficiency across ultra-wide output voltage and load ranges. To exploit the inherent structural symmetry of the DAB topology, a symmetric optimization strategy based on triple-phase shift (SOS-TPS) is proposed. The method specifically targets the forward buck operating mode, where an optimization framework is established to minimize the root mean square (RMS) current of the inductor, thereby addressing both switching and conduction losses. The formulation explicitly incorporates zero-voltage switching (ZVS) constraints and operating mode conditions. By employing the Karush–Kuhn–Tucker (KKT) conditions in conjunction with the Lagrange multiplier method (LMM), the refined control trajectories corresponding to various power levels are analytically derived, enabling efficient modulation across the entire operating range. In the medium-power region, full-switch ZVS is inherently satisfied. In the low-power operation, full-switch ZVS is achieved by introducing a modulation factor λ, and a selection principle for λ is established. For high-power operation, the strategy transitions to a conventional single-phase shift (SPS) modulation. Furthermore, by exploiting the inherent symmetry of the DAB topology, the proposed method reveals the symmetric property of modulation control. The modulation strategy for the forward boost mode can be efficiently derived through a duty cycle and voltage gain mapping, eliminating the need for re-derivation. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed SOS-TPS strategy, a 2.3 kW experimental prototype was developed. The measured results demonstrate that the method ensures ZVS for all switches under the full load range, supports ultra-wide voltage conversion capability, substantially suppresses RMS current, and achieves a maximum efficiency of 97.3%. Short-circuit current is a key characteristic value for synchronous generator-based power systems. It is employed for different applications during the planning and operation phases. The proportion of converter-interfaced units is increasing in order to integrate more renewable energy sources into the system. These units have different fault current characteristics due to their physical properties and operation strategies. Consequently, the network’s short-circuit current profile is changing, both in terms of magnitude and injection time. Therefore, accurately estimating fault currents is crucial for reliable power system planning and operation. Traditionally, two calculation methods are employed: the equivalent voltage source (IEC 60909/VDE 0102) and the superimposition (complete) method. In this work, the assumptions, simplifications, and limitations from both types of methods are addressed. As a result, a new load-flow-based method is presented, improving the static modeling of generating units and the accuracy in the estimation of short-circuit currents. The method is tested for mixed generation types comprising of synchronous generators, and grid-following (current source) and grid-forming (voltage source before and current source after the current limit) converters. All methods are compared against detailed time-domain RMS simulations using a modified IEEE-39 bus system and a real network from ENTSO-E. It is shown that the proposed method provides the best accuracy in the calculation of initial short-circuit currents for converter-based power systems. Full article

Reliable wave prediction plays a significant role in wave energy converter (WEC) research, but there are still prediction errors that would increase the uncertainty for the power grid and reduce the power quality. The efficiency and stability of the power take-off (PTO) system are also important research topics in WEC applications. In order to solve the above-mentioned problems, this paper presents a model predictive control (MPC) method composed of a prediction error compensation controller and a PTO optimization controller. This work aims to address the limitations of existing wave prediction methods and improve the efficiency and stability of hydraulic PTO systems in WECs. By controlling the charging and discharging of the accumulator, the power quality is enhanced by reducing grid frequency fluctuations and voltage flicker through prediction error compensation. In addition, an efficient and stable hydraulic PTO system can be obtained by keeping the operation pressure of the hydraulic motor at the optimal range. Thus, smoother power output minimizes grid-balancing penalties and storage wear, and stable hydraulic pressure extends PTO component lifespan. Finally, comparative numerical simulation studies are provided to show the efficacy of the proposed method. The results validate that the dual-controller MPC framework reduces power deviations by 74.3% and increases average power generation by 31% compared to the traditional method. Full article

Banana Fusarium wilt (BFW, also known as Panama disease) is a highly infectious and destructive disease that threatens global banana production, requiring early recognition for timely prevention and control. Current monitoring methods primarily rely on continuous variable features—such as band reflectances (BRs) and vegetation indices (VIs)—collectively referred to as basic features (BFs)—which are prone to noise during the early stages of infection and struggle to capture subtle spectral variations, thus limiting the recognition accuracy. To address this limitation, this study proposes a discretized enhanced feature (EF) construction method, the automated kernel density segmentation-based feature construction algorithm (AutoKDFC). By analyzing the differences in the kernel density distributions between healthy and diseased samples, the AutoKDFC automatically determines the optimal segmentation threshold, converting continuous BFs into binary features with higher discriminative power for early-stage recognition. Using UAV-based multi-spectral imagery, BFW recognition models are developed and tested with the random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), and Gaussian naïve Bayes (GNB) algorithms. The results show that EFs exhibit significantly stronger correlations with BFW’s presence than original BFs. Feature importance analysis via RF further confirms that EFs contribute more to the model performance, with VI-derived features outperforming BR-based ones. The integration of EFs results in average performance gains of 0.88%, 2.61%, and 3.07% for RF, SVM, and GNB, respectively, with SVM achieving the best performance, averaging over 90%. Additionally, the generated BFW distribution map closely aligns with ground observations and captures spectral changes linked to disease progression, validating the method’s practical utility. Overall, the proposed AutoKDFC method demonstrates high effectiveness and generalizability for BFW recognition. Its core concept of “automatic feature enhancement” has strong potential for broader applications in crop disease monitoring and supports the development of intelligent early warning systems in plant health management. This study presents the design, fabrication, and performance assessment of a novel, small-scale (30–70 W), hybrid ocean energy system that captures energy from wave-induced heave motion using a point-absorber buoy and from ocean currents via a vertical axis water turbine (VAWT). Key innovations include a custom designed and built dual-rotor generator that accepts independent mechanical input from both subsystems without requiring complex mechanical coupling and a bi-directional mechanical motion rectifier with an overdrive. Numerical simulations using ANSYS AQWA (2024R2) and QBLADE(2.0.4) guided the design optimization of the buoy and turbine, respectively. Wave resource assessment for the Khobar coastline, Saudi Arabia, was conducted using both historical data and field measurements. The prototype was designed and built using readily available 3D-printed components, ensuring cost-effective construction. This mechanically simple system was tested in both laboratory and outdoor conditions. Results showed reliable operation and stable power generation under simultaneous wave and current input. The performance is comparable to that of existing hybrid ocean wave–current energy converters that employ more complex flywheel or dual degree-of-freedom systems. This work provides a validated pathway for low-cost, compact, and modular hybrid ocean energy systems suited for remote coastal applications or distributed marine sensing platforms. Full article

Photovoltaic panels have become a promising solution for generating renewable energy and reducing our reliance on fossil fuels by capturing solar energy and converting it into electricity. The effectiveness of this conversion depends on several factors, such as the quality of the solar panels and the amount of solar radiation received in a specific region. This makes accurate solar irradiance forecasting essential for planning and managing efficient solar power systems. This study examines the application of machine learning (ML) models for accurately predicting global horizontal irradiance (GHI) using a three-year dataset from six distinct photovoltaic stations: NELHA, ULL, HSU, RaZON+, UNLV, and NWTC. The primary aim is to identify optimal shared features for GHI prediction across multiple sites using a 30 min time shift based on autocorrelation analysis. Key features identified for accurate GHI prediction include direct normal irradiance (DNI), diffuse horizontal irradiance (DHI), and solar panel temperatures. The predictions were performed using tree-based algorithms and ensemble learners, achieving R2 values exceeding 95% at most stations, with NWTC reaching 99%. Gradient Boosting Regression (GBR) performed best at NELHA, NWTC, and RaZON, while Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) excelled at ULL and UNLV. CatBoost was optimal for HSU. The impact of time-shifting values on performance was also examined, revealing that larger shifts led to performance deterioration, though MLP performed well under these conditions. The study further proposes a stacking ensemble approach to enhance model generalizability, integrating the strengths of various models for more robust GHI prediction. Full article

Matrix converters (MC) offer a compact, bidirectional solution for power conversion; however, achieving precise reactive power control at the input terminals remains challenging under varying operating conditions. This paper presents an enhanced Singular Value Decomposition modulation technique (e-SVD) as a solution tailored to optimize reactive power management on the MC input side, enabling both active and reactive power control regardless of the power factor. The proposed method achieves input reactive power control based on a reactive power gain, a quantity derived from the apparent output power and defined by a mathematical expression involving electrical parameters and control variables. Experimental tests carried out on a low-power MC prototype to validate the proposal show that the measured reactive power gain closely aligns with theoretical predictions from the mathematical expressions. Overall, the proposed e-SVD modulation technique lays the foundation for more reliable reactive power regulation in applications such as microgrids and distributed generation systems, contributing to the development of smarter and more resilient energy infrastructures. This paper aims to analyze the performance of a tilt-rotor fixed-wing RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft System) using a segmented approach, focusing on a nominal mission for SAR (Search and Rescue) applications. The study employs optimization techniques tailored to each segment to meet power consumption requirements, and the results highlight the accuracy of the physical characterization, which incorporates nonlinear propulsive and aerodynamic models derived from wind tunnel test campaigns. Critical segments for this nominal mission, such as the vertical take off or the transition from vertical to horizontal flight regimes, are addressed to fully understand the performance response of the aircraft. The proposed framework integrates experimental models into trajectory optimization procedures for each segment, enabling a realistic and modular analysis of energy use and aerodynamic performance. This approach provides valuable insights for both flight control design and future sizing iterations of convertible UAVs (Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles). Full article

The transition to electric mobility has significantly increased the demand for lithium-ion batteries, raising concerns about their end-of-life management. Therefore, this study presents the design, development and first implementation steps of a stationary energy storage system utilizing second-life electric vehicle (EV) batteries. These batteries, no longer suitable for traction applications due to a reduced state of health (SoH) below 80%, retain sufficient capacity for less demanding stationary applications. The proposed system is designed to be flexible and scalable, serving both research and commercial purposes. Key challenges include heterogeneous battery characteristics, safety considerations due to increased internal resistance and battery aging, and the need for flexible power electronics. An optimized dual active bridge (DAB) converter topology is introduced to connect several batteries in parallel and to ensure efficient bidirectional power flow over a wide voltage range. A first prototype, rated at 50 kW, has been built and tested in the laboratory. This study contributes to sustainable energy storage solutions by extending battery life cycles, reducing waste, and promoting economic viability for industrial partners. Full article

This paper presents a standalone system that utilizes a capacitive isolated series resonant converter using an extremum-seeking control algorithm to extract the maximum power from PV panels. While resonant converters have been used for battery charging applications, series resonant converters that utilize capacitive galvanic isolation have not been sufficiently explored, and their design considerations for battery charging have not been established. In addition, extremum-seeking control algorithms have been explored for maximum power point tracking using PWM converters, but not using PFM converters such as resonant converters. This paper lays out the advantages of using an extremum-seeking-based control algorithm with resonant converters, specifically series resonant converters, and it presents simulation results of a 200 W standalone battery charging system to validate the stated benefits. This paper presents the design and implementation of a high-efficiency, full silicon carbide (SiC)-based center-tapped phase-shifted full-bridge (PSFB) converter for NiCd battery charging applications in railway systems. The converter utilizes SiC MOSFET modules on the primary side and SiC diodes on the secondary side, resulting in significant efficiency improvements due to the superior switching characteristics and high-temperature tolerance inherent in SiC devices. A nanocrystalline-cored center-tapped transformer is optimized to minimize voltage stress on the rectifier diodes. Additionally, the use of a nanocrystalline core provides high saturation flux density, low core loss, and excellent permeability, particularly at high frequencies, which significantly enhances system efficiency. The converter also compensates for temperature fluctuations during operation, enabling a wide and adjustable output voltage range according to the temperature differences. A prototype of the 10-kW, 50-kHz PSFB converter, operating with an input voltage range of 700–750 V and output voltage of 77–138 V, was developed and tested both through simulations and experimentally. The converter achieved a maximum efficiency of 97% and demonstrated a high power density of 2.23 kW/L, thereby validating the effectiveness of the proposed design for railway battery charging applications.
