Background: Motor as well as attentional skills are deficient in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The aim of the present study was to explore whether a short immersive rehabilitation therapy could improve motor and visuo-attentional capabilities in children with ADHD. Methods: Forty children with ADHD participated in this study; IQ-, sex- and age-matched children were splitted in two groups (G1 and G2) of twenty. An unpredictable random sequence was used to allocate a child to group G1 (trained group) or G2 (control group). Oculomotor and postural performance for both groups of children were objectively assessed twice (before and after 16 min) by using an eye tracker and platform. Group G1 only underwent 16 min of immersive rehabilitation therapy, while the control group (G2) had 16 min of resting. The immersive therapy consisted of performing physical movement while training visual discrimination, attention and spatial orientation skills. Results: After 16 min, significant improvements in the fixation area (p = 0.008) and in the number of catch-up saccades during pursuit eye movements (p < 0.001), as well as a smaller postural instability index (PII) (p < 0.001), were observed for the trained group (G1) only. Conclusions: These findings suggest that children with ADHD could benefit from a short immersive therapy to improve both visual–attention and motor performances. This new immersive therapy is a useful tool allowing a better integration of both visual and motor sensory inputs via the cortico/cerebellar network. Follow-up studies on a larger number of children with ADHD will be necessary to explore the eventual possible persistence of such a training effect and imaging works will help to understand where such adaptive mechanisms take place. Cervical cancer remains a significant global public health challenge, with human papillomavirus (HPV) as its primary cause. In response, the World Health Organization (WHO) launched a global strategy to eliminate cervical cancer by 2030 and, in its 2022 position paper, recommended a single-dose vaccination schedule. The objective of this review is to critically examine the current HPV vaccination landscape in China, including vaccination policies, immunization schedules, supply–demand dynamics, and the feasibility of transitioning to a single-dose regimen. By synthesizing recent developments in HPV virology, epidemiology, vaccine types, and immunization strategies, we identify both opportunities and barriers unique to the Chinese context. Results indicate that China primarily adheres to a three-dose vaccination schedule, with an optional two-dose schedule for girls aged 9–14, leaving a notable gap compared to the most recent WHO recommendation. The high prevalence of HPV types 52 and 58 contributes to a distinct regional infection pattern, underscoring the specific need for nine-valent vaccines tailored to China’s epidemiological profile. Despite the growing demand, vaccine supply remains inadequate, with an estimated annual shortfall of more than 15 million doses. This issue is further complicated by strong public preference for the nine-valent vaccine and the relatively high cost of vaccination. Emerging evidence supports the comparable efficacy and durable protection of a single-dose schedule, which could substantially reduce financial and logistical burdens while expanding coverage. This review advocates for the adoption of a simplified single-dose regimen, supported by catch-up strategies for older cohorts and the integration of HPV vaccination into China’s National Immunization Program (NIP). Sustained investment in domestic vaccine development and centralized procurement of imported vaccines may also possibly alleviate supply shortage. These coordinated efforts are critical for strengthening HPV-related disease prevention and accelerating China’s progress toward the WHO’s cervical cancer elimination targets. Full article

Introduction: In 2008, Mexico initiated its national HPV vaccination program targeting adolescent girls. This study aims to evaluate the current status of the program, analyzing trends in vaccine acquisition, administration, and coverage over a 16-year period. Materials and Methods: A retrospective longitudinal study was conducted using secondary data from 2008 to 2023. Official records from three major public health institutions—IMSS, ISSSTE, and SSA—were reviewed to assess HPV vaccine procurement and administration. Results: Significant fluctuations were identified in the number of doses acquired, administered, and the corresponding coverage rates. A marked decline was observed between 2019 and 2021, followed by a sharp increase in 2022 and 2023. Over the entire period, an estimated 6.8 million doses were not administered to the intended target population. Furthermore, 2.6 million doses were administered in excess of the number officially acquired, indicating possible discrepancies in data reporting or vaccine inventory management. Discussion: The findings revealed substantial inconsistencies in vaccine procurement, administration, and coverage across institutions. While IMSS and ISSSTE consistently reported coverage below the theoretical target, SSA occasionally exceeded expectations, potentially compensating for deficits elsewhere. Nevertheless, national coverage remained inadequate in several years, with notable disparities between institutions. These gaps highlight systemic weaknesses in program coordination, planning, and data transparency, contributing to millions of unvaccinated individuals. Conclusions: This study offers a comprehensive analysis of Mexico’s HPV vaccination program, uncovering critical irregularities in its implementation. Challenges include inaccurate target population estimation, inconsistencies between vaccine acquisition and administration, and limited data reliability. Despite some progress in recent years, particularly in the post-pandemic years, the program requires urgent restructuring. This includes implementing a national catch-up strategy, expanding vaccine eligibility, and strengthening surveillance systems to ensure equitable and effective coverage toward the elimination of cervical cancer. We have previously shown a difference between the gut microbiota composition of stunted and non-stunted children in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. The current study aimed to perform an intervention with a probiotic, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum IS-10506, and its UHT-treated postbiotic compared to placebo in order to accomplish catch-up growth in the stunted children, possibly through modulation of the gut microbiota. Apart from the maltodextrin (placebo), probiotic, and postbiotic in chocolate milk, all groups also received a functional and nutritional biscuit and had access to newly constructed water wells as well as soap to improve hygiene. The results show that independent of treatment, the stunted children had a significantly higher increase in height and zlen (corrected for age) compared with their age- and gender-matched controls but a significantly lower increase in weight. Several potential pathogenic taxa declined in all groups, among which was Escherichia/Shigella (adjusted.p = 6.44 × 10−15), but so did some beneficial taxa, such as Bifidobacterium and Akkermansia. Faecalibacterium, which was already higher in the stunted children at baseline, increased independent of treatment. Changes in the relative abundance of several taxa of the microbiota correlated with the changes in anthropometric measures. In conclusion, although there was no difference between the interventions, understanding the dynamics and the role of the gut microbiota in this process might allow healthcare providers to develop targeted nutritional strategies aimed at optimizing health outcomes for children at risk of stunting, thereby addressing a critical global health issue. Background and Objectives: Cervical cancer remains a critical public health challenge in Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EECA), where systemic barriers have hindered prevention efforts. This descriptive regional study evaluates progress toward achieving Target 1 of the WHO Global Strategy for Cervical Cancer Elimination—vaccinating 90% of girls by age 15—in 17 countries and territories. The research is situated within the context of the Regional Alliance for Cervical Cancer Prevention in EECA, a multi-stakeholder platform launched by UNFPA in 2021 to accelerate regional progress toward WHO targets. The Alliance supports countries through technical collaboration, shared learning, and political engagement. Therefore, as a secondary endpoint, the study explores possible correlations between national achievements and the post-2021 scale-up efforts supported by the Alliance. Methods: A standardized questionnaire, consolidated by United Nation Population Fund (UNFPA) technical experts, was disseminated in November 2024 to 17 national focal points, yielding 19 responses due to disaggregated submissions from Bosnia and Herzegovina. The survey collected data on HPV vaccination policies, delivery models, vaccine type, target populations, and coverage. Results: By late 2024, six countries had implemented HPV vaccination before 2021, while six more launched programs after the Regional Alliance’s formation in 2021. Coverage varied widely, from 0.2% in Brčko District to 99.3% in Uzbekistan. Most countries targeted girls aged 9–14, with increasing male inclusion and catch-up cohorts. Gardasil 4 was the most used vaccine, though Gardasil 9 is gaining ground. School-based and hybrid delivery strategies were associated with significantly higher coverage (p = 0.0121). Inferential analysis also showed significant variation by vaccine type (p = 0.0067) and a positive correlation with program maturity (ρ = 0.52, p = 0.067). However, findings should be interpreted considering limitations including reliance on self-reported country data and absence of independent validation. Conclusions: The results offer actionable insights into delivery models, gender inclusion, and regional disparities—supporting efforts to close the gap toward 2030 elimination targets in EECA Countries. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a significant challenge for pediatric endocrinologists, as children with CKD may present a variety of endocrine complications. Growth failure is common in CKD, and its severity is correlated with the degree of renal insufficiency. Management strategies include addressing reversible comorbidities, optimizing nutrition, and ensuring metabolic control. Kidney replacement therapy, including transplantation, determines a significant improvement in growth. According to a recent Consensus Statement, children with CKD stage 3—or on dialysis older >6 months—are eligible for treatment with recombinant growth hormone (rGH) in the case of persistent growth failure. Treatment with rGH may be considered for those with height between the 3rd and 10th percentile and persistent growth deceleration. In children who received kidney transplantation but continue to experience growth failure, initiation of GH therapy is recommended one year post-transplantation if spontaneous catch-up growth does not occur and steroid-free immunosuppression is not an option. In children with CKD, due to nephropathic cystinosis and persistent growth failure, GH therapy should be considered at all stages of CKD. Potential adverse effects and benefits must be regularly assessed during therapy. Treatment with GH is safe in children with CKD. However, its general efficacy is still controversial. All possible problems with a negative impact on growth should be timely addressed and resolved, whenever possible with a personalized approach to the patient. GH therapy may be useful in promoting catch-up growth in children with residual growth potential. Future research should focus on refining effective therapeutic strategies and establishing consensus guidelines to optimize growth outcomes in this population. Full article

Vaccine hesitancy is a common issue for children with immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) in China. The objective of this paper is to assess the immunization statuses of children with ITP, analyze the possible relationship between immunization and thrombocytopenia, and evaluate the safety of immunization after ITP remission. We included 186 children with an ITP history and followed up with them for two years after receiving re-immunization recommendations. The participants had an overall age-appropriate vaccine coverage of 57.9%. Vaccine-associated thrombocytopenia occurred in 99 (53.2%, 95% CI = 46.06–60.26) children ranging from 0 to 34 days following immunization, with 14 vaccines involved. One hundred and fifty-four (82.3%, 95% CI = 76.72–87.54) children were advised to restart immunization, whereas 32 (17.2%, 95% CI = 12.46–23.28) were advised to postpone partial or full vaccination. Following the follow-up, 150 (80.6%, 95% CI = 74.37–85.68) children completed the catch-up immunization, whereas 27 (14.5%, 95% CI = 10.17–20.30) partially completed it. Four patients with thrombocytopenia relapsed following the re-immunization. Incomplete catch-up immunization was related to the factors of chronic thrombocytopenia, vaccine-associated thrombocytopenia, and the relapse of ITP following re-immunization. ITP may occur after immunization with vaccines other than measles-containing vaccines. Re-immunization in children with ITP generally does not result in a relapse, regardless of whether the previous thrombocytopenia was vaccine-associated. Full article

China is striving to leverage the power of science and technology to green its agriculture and simultaneously enhance grain productivity. To assess the performance dynamics of the dual agricultural mission, this study presents the green growth rate of agriculture using the DEA-based Green Total Factor Productivity (GTFP) indicator, together with the growth rate of grain yields, and applies it to the case of Jiangsu, a major grain-producing province with a well-developed economy. It is found that Jiangsu’s agriculture has generally performed well during the implementation of the two major national strategies addressing green development and grain security, especially in northern Jiangsu, which is a major grain-producing area. In contrast, the phased fluctuations in green growth in agriculture in southern Jiangsu are more pronounced, with negative green growth even occurring during the green agriculture movement. Much of the volatility in agricultural green growth at the provincial, subregional and municipal levels is generated by the effects of the movement of the green technology frontier, which is led by the best practitioners. Accordingly, the possibility of improving the weak state of the catch-up effect on green growth is explored from the perspective of the Chinese government-led agricultural science and innovation system; it also traces the green agricultural initiatives in the main grain-marketing areas that have failed to deliver the expected green growth, and recommends a review of such policies and a refinement of the GTFP Index tool for assessing sustainable green growth. Excessive carbon emissions will cause the greenhouse effect and global warming, which is not conducive to environmental protection and sustainable development. In order to realize the goal of “carbon peak and carbon neutrality” as soon as possible, this paper utilizes the methodology provided by the IPCC to measure the carbon emissions and carbon intensity of China’s energy consumption. The classification method of carbon emission and the kernel density function method are used to explore the spatial and temporal evolution of regional carbon emissions. Based on the Log Mean Divided Index (LMDI) method, the drivers of China’s energy carbon emissions are measured. Based on the Tapio index function and the catch-up decoupling model, the decoupling status of Chinese provinces and the development gap with the benchmark provinces are examined. The results show that (1) China’s total energy carbon emissions show a “rising-declining-rising” trend from 2005 to 2021, and reach the first peak in 2013, totaling 1,484,984.406 million metric tons. China’s Hebei, Shanxi, and Shandong provinces have the highest energy carbon emissions. (2) China’s energy carbon emissions are influenced by multiple factors, and the contribution of each factor to energy carbon emissions is in the following order: economic development effect > energy intensity effect > energy structure effect > population size effect. (3) China’s catch-up provinces develop their economies at the expense of the environment and energy consumption. Full article

The World Health Organization (WHO) set the goal of 90% HPV vaccination coverage in the population to eliminate cervical cancer. Opportunistic vaccination is performed outside the free vaccination or catch-up programs. Both free and opportunistic HPV vaccination programs experienced slowdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this retrospective study, we aimed to identify the benefits and the obstacles of opportunistic vaccination among male and female individuals who took advantage of the “on-demand” service offered by San Raffaele Hospital in Milan from April 2018 to May 2023. The impact that the COVID-19 pandemic had on vaccination adherence was also analyzed. Data on a total of 527 subjects were collected from an in-house database and through personal interviews. Women in the cohort of older patients (over 25) adhered to the vaccination schedule more than younger women. Opportunistic vaccination request is influenced by the need of a gynecologist, a general practitioner, or public health clinic availability. Women also showed good adherence to screening, demonstrating awareness of the importance of cervical cancer secondary prevention despite vaccination. Opportunistic vaccination offers the possibility of including individuals excluded from the free vaccination campaigns, often already affected by lesions caused by HPV, providing increased viral clearance and faster lesion regression. The main limit remains the economic burden. Full article

Introduction: In Local Health Unit 7, human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccination campaigns for 12-year-olds have long been implemented by the vaccination services of the Department of Prevention. Due to the pressure of the COVID-19 pandemic on these services, an emergency vaccination campaign was directly managed by primary care pediatricians (PCPs). An initial evaluation of this experience was conducted. Materials and methods: Data on 12-year-olds assisted by PCPs belonging to the 2006 (pre-pandemic) and 2008 (pandemic) birth cohorts were extracted, along with HPV vaccination data. Health district, gender, citizenship, socioeconomic status, and PCPs were evaluated as possible influencing factors in a two-level logistic regression (second level: single PCP). Results: The HPV vaccination gap between males and females increased significantly for the 2008 birth cohort compared to the 2006 birth cohort (11 vs. 4 percentage points). As for PCPs, the vaccination uptake range was 4–71% for the 2008 birth cohort vs. 32–85% for the 2006 cohort. The proportion of variance explained at the second level was overall equal to 9.7% for the 2008 cohort vs. 3.6% for the 2006 cohort. Conclusions: The vaccination campaign carried out during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic increased the HPV vaccination gaps among Health Districts, genders, and individual PCPs, probably due to a lack of homogeneity in professional practices and attitudes toward HPV vaccination. Catch-up interventions are required in the immediate term, while an equity-lens approach should be taken for reprogramming the vaccination campaign. Greater involvement of schools and families could ensure a more equitable approach and a better uptake. Full article

Weak sustainability, WS, attempts a comprehensive notion of sustainability, sustaining human welfare directly, or equivalently, sustaining inclusive wealth, IW, sufficient to sustain welfare. Sustainability is, in principle, forever, and accordingly, IW is conceived and assessed in a very long-term context. Given that future outcomes are unobservable, IW assessments are conducted in terms of expectations. However, this introduces pervasive circular reasoning: the calculated value of IW assumes that our expectations will be met, but that is the question. Optimistic expectations (for example) increase calculated IW, which, in turn, increases our confidence that our society is on a sustainable path. Given the logical difficulties of projecting IW into the future, analysts resort to tracking IW at regular intervals through the recent past. This reduces, but does not eliminate, the circularity problem. The signals from tracking IW are less than perfect from a policy perspective: they are too aggregate, perhaps masking impending crises regarding particular resources until it is too late; and too dependent on imperfect markets; and they document the recent past, so policy managers are always playing catch-up. WS-based sustainability policy frameworks include WS-plus, which invokes ad hoc strong sustainability, SS, patches to address threatened resource crises. It may also be possible to allow a degree of WS flexibility for individual jurisdictions within the constraints of a global safe operating space, SOS. Full article

The aim of this review was to describe all of the mutations in the growth hormone receptor (GHR) and insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor (IGF1R) genes that have been discovered so far, and their possible impact on final body height, as well as their relationship with catch-up growth in children born small for gestational age (SGA). Mutations in the GHR gene were found to cause a body height below −2 SD, from the mean for sex and age, whereas the mutations in the IGF1R gene were associated with low body height and intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), and with being born SGA. After birth, when the child’s growth is not restricted by the intrauterine environment, the infant may develop its developmental potential and experience catch-up growth, which makes it possible to catch up with peers born appropriate for gestational age (AGA). Despite this, catch-up growth does not apply to all, but only to about 85% of SGA children, and its mechanism is unknown. Variants in NAA15 are closely related to neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). In this study, we investigated the spectrum and clinical features of NAA15 variants in a Chinese NDD cohort of 769 children. Four novel NAA15 pathogenic variants were detected by whole-exome sequencing, including three de novo variants and one maternal variant. The in vitro minigene splicing assay confirmed one noncanonical splicing variant (c.1410+5G>C), which resulted in abnormal mRNA splicing. All affected children presented mild developmental delay, and catch-up trajectories were noted in three patients based on their developmental scores at different ages. Meanwhile, the literature review also showed that half of the reported patients with NAA15 variants presented mild/moderate developmental delay or intellectual disability, and possible catch-up sign was indicated for three affected patients. Taken together, our study expanded the spectrum of NAA15 variants in NDD patients. The affected patients presented mild developmental delay, and possible catch-up developmental trajectories were suggested. Studying the natural neurodevelopmental trajectories of NDD patients with pathogenic variants and their benefits from physical rehabilitations are needed in the future for precise genetic counseling and clinical management. Longitudinal Association of Maternal Pre-Pregnancy BMI and Third-Trimester Glycemia with Early Life Growth of Offspring: A Prospective Study among GDM-Negative Pregnant Women

Intrauterine modifiable maternal metabolic factors are essential to the early growth of offspring. The study sought to evaluate the associations of pre-pregnancy BMI and third-trimester fasting plasma glucose (FPG) with offspring growth outcomes within 24 months among GDM-negative pregnant women. Four hundred eighty-three mother –offspring dyads were included from the Shanghai Maternal-Child Pairs Cohort. The pregnant women were categorized into four mutually exclusive groups according to pre-pregnancy BMI as normal or overweight/obesity and third-trimester FPG as controlled or not controlled. Offspring growth in early life was indicated by the BAZ (BMI Z-score), catch-up growth, and overweight/obesity. Among those with controlled third-trimester FPG, pre-pregnancy overweight/obesity significantly increased offspring birth weight, BAZ, and risks of overweight/obesity (RR 1.83, 95% CI 1.23 to 2.73) within 24 months. Those who had uncontrolled third-trimester FPG had a reduced risk of offspring overweight/obesity within 24 months by 47%. The combination of pre-pregnancy overweight/obesity and maternal uncontrolled third-trimester FPG increased 5.24-fold risk of offspring catch-up growth within 24 months (p < 0.05). Maternal pre-pregnancy overweight/obesity and uncontrolled third-trimester glycemia among GDM-negative women both have adverse effects on offspring growth within 24 months. With the combination of increasing pre-pregnancy BMI and maternal third-trimester FPG, the possibility of offspring catch-up growth increases. Full article
