The shift towards renewable resources has positioned agar, a natural seaweed polysaccharide, as a pivotal and sustainable material for developing next-generation energy storage technologies. This review highlights the transformative role of agar-based composites as a game-changing and eco-friendly platform for supercapacitors, batteries, and fuel cells. Moving beyond the traditional synthetic polymers, agar introduces a novel paradigm by leveraging its natural gelation, superior film-forming ability, and inherent ionic conductivity to create advanced electrolytes, binders, and matrices. The novelty of this field lies in the strategic fabrication of synergistic composites with polymers, metal oxides, and carbon materials, engineered through innovative techniques like electrospinning, solvent casting, crosslinking, 3D printing, and freeze-drying. We critically examine how these innovative composites are breaking new ground in enhancing device efficacy, flexibility, and thermal stability. Ultimately, this analysis not only consolidates the current landscape but also charts future pathways, positioning agar-based materials as a pivotal and sustainable solution for powering the future. Cellulose stands out as a promising alternative to conventional polymers in food packaging due to its abundance, renewability, biodegradability and structural robustness. Despite these advantages, its natural low resistance to water and fats limits its direct application, necessitating the use of protective coatings to enhance its functionality. In this context, the use of biopolymeric coatings such as poly(lactic acid) (PLA), starch, lignin, chitin and chitosan has emerged as a sustainable solution, providing effective barriers against moisture and oils. These coatings not only improve the functional performance of cellulosic substrates but also reduce reliance on fossil-based plastics, fostering compostable systems and supporting a circular economy. This review analyzes recent developments in biopolymer-coated cellulosic packaging materials, focusing on their resistance to water and fats. The aim is to assess their potential for sustainable food packaging applications. The findings highlight how these innovations contribute to global sustainability goals, such as reducing plastic waste, lowering carbon emissions, and decreasing dependence on non-renewable resources. Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) has emerged as a promising bio-electrochemical technology for sustainable CO2 conversion into valuable organic compounds since it uses living electroactive microbes to directly convert CO2 into value-added products. This review synthesizes advancements in MES from 2010 to 2025, focusing on the electrode materials, microbial communities, reactor engineering, performance trends, techno-economic evaluations, and future challenges, especially on the results reported between 2020 and 2025, thus highlighting that MES technology is now a technology to be reckoned with in the spectrum of biofuel technology production. While the current productivity and scalability of microbial electrochemical systems (MESs) remain limited compared to conventional CO2 conversion technologies, MES offers distinct advantages, including process simplicity, as it operates under ambient conditions without the need for high pressures or temperatures; modularity, allowing reactors to be stacked or scaled incrementally to match varying throughput requirements; and seamless integration with circular economy strategies, enabling the direct valorization of waste streams, wastewater, or renewable electricity into valuable multi-carbon products. These features position MES as a promising platform for sustainable and adaptable CO2 utilization, particularly in decentralized or resource-constrained settings. Recent innovations in electrode materials, such as conductive polymers and metal–organic frameworks, have enhanced electron transfer efficiency and microbial attachment, leading to improved MES performance. The development of diverse microbial consortia has expanded the range of products achievable through MES, with studies highlighting the importance of microbial interactions and metabolic pathways in product formation. Advancements in reactor design, including continuous-flow systems and membrane-less configurations, have addressed scalability issues, enhancing mass transfer and system stability. Performance metrics, such as the current densities and product yields, have improved due to exceptionally high product selectivity and surface-area-normalized production compared to abiotic systems, demonstrating the potential of MES for industrial applications. Techno-economic analyses indicate that while MES offers promising economic prospects, challenges related to cost-effective electrode materials and system integration remain. Future research should focus on optimizing microbial communities, developing advanced electrode materials, and designing scalable reactors to overcome the existing limitations. Addressing these challenges will be crucial for the commercialization of MES as a viable technology for sustainable chemical production. Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) offers a novel route to biofuels by directly converting CO2 and renewable electricity into energy carriers, bypassing the costly biomass feedstocks required in conventional pathways. With advances in electrode materials, reactor engineering, and microbial performance, MES could achieve cost-competitive, carbon-neutral fuels, positioning it as a critical complement to future biofuel technologies. Starch extracted from the domestically cultivated Scala potato variety was explored as a renewable resource for the formulation of biodegradable thermoplastic starch (TPS)/polylactic acid (PLA) blends intended for environmentally friendly food packaging applications. The isolated starch underwent comprehensive physicochemical and structural characterization to assess its suitability for polymer processing. TPS derived from Scala starch was compounded with PLA, both with and without citric acid (CA) as a green compatibilizer to enhance phase compatibility. The resulting polymer blends were systematically analyzed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflectance (FTIR–ATR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) to evaluate thermal and structural properties. Mechanical performance, water vapor permeability (WVP), water absorption (WA), and biodegradability in soil over 56 days were also assessed. The incorporation of citric acid improved phase miscibility, leading to enhanced structural uniformity, thermal stability, mechanical strength, and barrier efficiency. Bio-degradation tests confirmed the environmental compatibility of the developed blends. Overall, the results demonstrate the potential of Scala-based TPS/PLA systems, particularly those modified with citric acid, as viable candidates for sustainable food packaging, while highlighting the importance of further formulation optimization to balance functional and biodegradative performance. Growing environmental concerns and the depletion of fossil-based resources have accelerated the demand for sustainable alternatives in engineering and construction materials. Among these, bio-based composites have gained attention for their use of renewable and eco-friendly resources. Macadamia nutshells, typically treated as agricultural waste, possess high strength, brittleness, heat resistance, and fracture toughness, making them attractive candidates for structural applications. Australia alone contributes nearly 40% of global macadamia production, generating significant shell by-products that could be repurposed into high-value composites. This study investigates the development of novel composite cores and sandwich structures using macadamia nutshell particles reinforced in an epoxy polymer matrix. Two weight ratios (10% and 15%) and two particle sizes (200–600 µm and 1–1.18 mm) were employed, combined with laminating epoxy resin and hardener to fabricate composite cores. These cores were further processed into sandwich specimens with carbon fabric skins. Flexural and short beam shear (SBS) tests were conducted to evaluate the mechanical behaviour of the composites. The results demonstrate that higher filler content with fine particles achieved up to 15% higher flexural strength and 18% higher stiffness compared to coarser particle composites. Sandwich structures exhibited markedly improved interlaminar shear strength (8–15 MPa), confirming superior load transfer and durability. The results demonstrate that higher filler content and finer particles provided the most favourable mechanical performance, showing higher flexural strength, stiffness, and shear resistance compared to coarser particle formulations. Sandwich structures significantly outperformed core-only composites due to improved load transfer and resistance to bending and shear stresses, with the 15% fine-particle configuration emerging as the optimal formulation. By transforming macadamia nutshells into value-added composites, this research highlights an innovative pathway for waste utilisation, reduced environmental impact, and sustainable material development. The findings suggest that such composites hold strong potential for structural applications in construction and related engineering fields, especially in regions with abundant macadamia production. This study reinforces the role of agricultural by-products as practical solutions for advancing green composites and contributing to circular economy principles. Full article

Natural Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites (NFRPCs) are gaining attention as sustainable alternatives to conventional composite materials, due to their renewable origin, potential biodegradability, and possibly lower environmental impact. However, while technical advances in NFRPCs have progressed, the application of Circular Design (CD) strategies to their development remains underexplored. This paper presents a preliminary conceptual framework developed at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, aligning CD principles with the specific challenges and opportunities of NFRPCs. Building upon an extensive literature review, the study identifies and critically evaluates key design principles, tools, and strategies, assessing their relevance for guiding decision-making in this material context. The proposed framework offers guidance for integrating CD strategies from the earliest stages of product development, encompassing material selection, lifecycle mapping, and end-of-life planning. To assess its usability and practical value, the framework was tested through two academic case studies. The feedback gathered highlights both the framework’s potential as a learning and design support tool and the need for improved accessibility and clarity in Circular Design resources. Overall, this work contributes to bridging the gap between sustainable materials research and practical design application, offering a material-specific, adaptable, and bilingual resource for students, early-career engineers, and designers seeking to adopt circular practices. By combining systemic thinking with material-specific considerations, the framework fosters the development of more inclusive, regenerative, and ethically responsible design solutions. Full article

Due to the large amount of plastic waste that is currently produced, the demand for ecological solutions to this situation has been growing. Many research studies in recent years have focused on polylactic acid (PLA) as a biodegradable material made from renewable resources. The individual components of biodegradable materials should comply with the EN 13432 standard, which defines the properties of a “compostable” material. Careful selection of dyes and pigments is therefore important in terms of maintaining the biodegradability of the finished products. In this article, we focus on evaluating the flow properties of color masterbatches modified with inorganic biodegradable pigments. Two types of PLA were used as polymer pigment carriers, and titanium dioxide, carbon black, and two iron oxides were used as inorganic pigments. We monitored the effect of the type and concentration of pigments on the processability and rheological properties of the prepared color PLA masterbatches. The capillary viscometer and rotary rheoviscometer were used to determine rheological properties. The flow properties of color masterbatches containing 1 and 3 wt.% inorganic pigments with two types of pure polymers, PLA6100 and PLA175, were compared. We found that the color PLA masterbatches had good processability and satisfactory rheological properties, and therefore they are usable for further processing. Full article

The synthesis of bioplastics from renewable resources is essential for green living. PHBV (poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate)) is a biodegradable and biocompatible material ideal for various industrial applications. The impact of levulinic (LA), valeric acids (VA), and sodium propionate (SPr) as co-substrates in biomass and the synthesis of 3-hydroxy valerate (3HV) and co-polymerization of PHBV by Burkholderia thailandensis E264 (BtE264) was assessed. Thermogravimetric, XRD, NMR, and mechanical characterization were performed on the homopolymer (PHB) and co-polymer (PHBV), and compared to the PHBV-STD. BtE264 produced the co-polymer PHBV when adding any of the three co-substrates. LA showed a higher positive effect on microbial growth (8.4 g∙L−1) and PHBV production (3.91 g∙L−1), representing 78 and 22 mol % of 3HB and 3HV, respectively. The PHBV obtained with LA had a melting temperature (Tm) lower than the PHB homopolymer and presented lower values for melting enthalpies (ΔHf); the degree of crystallization and TGA values indicated that PHBV had better thermal stability. Additionally, FTIR and NMR revealed that BtE264 synthesizes PHBV with an organization in monomeric units (3HB-3HV), suggesting differentiated incorporation of the monomers, improving 3.4 times the break elongation the co-polymer’s tensile properties. This study highlights the co-substrates’ relevance in PHBV synthesis using BtE264 for the first time. Full article

Wax deposition, driven by the crystallization of long-chain n-alkanes, poses severe challenges across industries such as petroleum, oil and natural gas, food processing, and chemical manufacturing. This phenomenon compromises flow efficiency, increases energy demands, and necessitates costly maintenance interventions. Wax inhibitors, designed to mitigate these issues, operate by altering wax crystallization, aggregation, and adhesion over the pipelines. Classic wax inhibitors, comprising synthetic polymers and natural compounds, have been widely utilized due to their established efficiency and scalability. However, synthetic inhibitors face environmental concerns, while natural inhibitors exhibit reduced performance under extreme conditions. The advent of nano-based wax inhibitors has revolutionized wax management strategies. These advanced materials, including nanoparticles, nanoemulsions, and nanocomposites, leverage their high surface area and tunable interfacial properties to enhance efficiency, particularly in harsh environments. While offering superior performance, nano-based inhibitors are constrained by high production costs, scalability challenges, and potential environmental risks. In parallel, the development of “green” wax inhibitors derived from renewable resources such as vegetable oils addresses sustainability demands. These eco-friendly formulations introduce functionalities that reinforce inhibitory interactions with wax crystals, enabling effective deposition control while reducing reliance on synthetic components. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the mechanisms, applications, and comparative performance of classic and nano-based wax inhibitors. It highlights the growing integration of sustainable and hybrid approaches that combine the reliability of classic inhibitors with the advanced capabilities of nano-based systems. Future directions emphasize the need for cost-effective, eco-friendly solutions through innovations in material science, computational modeling, and biotechnology. Full article

Aromatic compounds are vital in both natural and synthetic chemistry, and they are traditionally sourced from non-renewable petrochemicals. However, plant biomass, particularly lignin, offers a renewable alternative source of aromatic compounds. Lignin, a complex polymer found in plant cell walls, is the largest renewable source of aromatic compounds, though its degradation remains challenging. Lignin can be chemically degraded through oxidation, acid hydrolysis or solvolysis. As an alternative, microorganisms, including fungi, could offer a sustainable alternative for breaking down lignin. The aromatic compounds released from lignin, by either microbial, chemical or enzymatic degradation, can be used by microorganisms to produce valuable compounds. Fungi possess unique enzymes capable of converting aromatic compounds derived from lignin or other sources into chemical building blocks that can be used in several industries. However, their aromatic metabolic pathways are poorly studied compared to bacterial systems. In the past, only a handful of genes and enzymes involved in the aromatic metabolic pathways had been identified. Recent advances in genomics, proteomics, and metabolic engineering are helping to reveal these metabolic pathways and identify the involved genes. This review highlights recent progress in understanding fungal aromatic metabolism, focusing on how Aspergillus niger converts plant-derived aromatic compounds into potentially useful products and the versatility of aromatic metabolism within the Aspergillus genus. Addressing the current knowledge gaps in terms of fungal pathways could unlock their potential for use in sustainable technologies, promoting eco-friendly production of chemical building blocks from renewable resources or bioremediation. The widespread use of conventional plastic in food packaging has raised serious environmental issues due to its persistence and poor biodegradability. With growing concerns over plastic pollution and its long-term ecological impact, researchers are increasingly turning to natural, renewable sources for sustainable alternatives. Agricultural waste, often discarded in large quantities, offers a valuable resource for producing biodegradable polymers. This review discusses the environmental burden caused by traditional plastics and explores how agricultural residues such as rice husks, corn cobs, and fruit peels can be converted into eco-friendly packaging materials. Various types of biopolymers sourced from agricultural waste, including cellulose, starch, plant and animal-based proteins, polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), and polylactic acid (PLA), are examined for their properties, benefits, and limitations in food packaging applications. Each material presents unique characteristics in terms of biodegradability, mechanical strength, and barrier performance. While significant progress has been made, several challenges remain, including cost-effective production, material performance, and compliance with food safety regulations. Looking ahead, innovations in material processing, waste management integration, and biopolymer formulation could pave the way for widespread adoption. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of current developments and future directions in the use of agricultural waste for sustainable packaging solutions, comparing their biodegradability and performance to conventional plastics. One of the world’s most sustainable solutions is to replace fossil-based polymers with biopolymers. The production of xanthan gum can be optimized using various renewable and cost-effective raw materials, which is a key focus in industrial biotechnology. Xanthan gum is a bioengineered thickening, stabilizing, and emulsifying agent. It has unique properties for use in many industries (food, biotechnology, petrochemicals, agricultural, cosmetics, wastewater treatment) and medical applications. It is tasteless, environmentally safe, non-toxic, and biodegradable. The biotechnological production of xanthan gum depends on several factors: bacterial strain development, culture medium preparation, carbon sources, fermentation parameters and modes, pH, temperature, recovery, purification, and quality control regulations. Bio-innovative strategies have been developed to optimize the production of xanthan gum. A variety of carbon and nitrogen sources, as well as alternative renewable sources, have been used in the production of xanthan gum. The aim of the present study was to optimize the xanthan gum yield using Xanthomonas campestris bacteria and different carbon (D-glucose, D-sorbitol, lactose, sucrose, D-mannitol, D-fructose, erythritol, coconut palm sugar, L-arabinose, unrefined cane sugar), various nitrogen (bacterial peptone, casein peptone, L-glutamic acid, L-arginine, L-methionine, L-tryptophan, malt extract, meat extract, L-phenylalanine, soy peptone) and alternative carbon (orange peels, tangerine peels, lemon peels, avocado peels, melon peels, apple peels, cellulose, xylose, xylitol) sources. The xanthan gum samples were analyzed using antioxidant methods. Our study showed that using L-glutamic acid as the carbon source for 72 h of bacterial fermentation of Xanthomonas campestris resulted in the highest xanthan gum yield: 32.34 g/L. However, using renewable resources, we achieved a very high concentration of xanthan gum in just 24 h of fermentation. According to the reducing power and DPPH methods, the highest antioxidant activities were measured for xanthan gum whose biosynthesis was based on renewable resources. Xanthan gum structures have been verified by FT-IR and 1H NMR analysis. The sustainable biotechnology study has the advantage of increasing the sustainable production of xanthan gum by using renewable alternative resources compared to other production processes. Xanthan gum continues to be a valuable biopolymer with a wide range of industrial applications while promoting environmentally friendly production practices. Full article

Membrane processes are extensively employed in a range of industrial and food applications. Due to growing environmental concerns and the introduction of regulatory measures, it is imperative to develop innovative membrane materials that can effectively replace petrochemical-based polymers, in line with the principles of a circular economy. The focus of this review is the use of polysaccharides for obtaining films/membranes for food and industrial applications using selected case studies. Besides the polysaccharides extracted from biomass, the valorization of agrifood residues and the use of plants adapted to arid lands (i.e., cactus) to produce polysaccharide films for food packaging is addressed. Moreover, microbial polysaccharides produced using renewable resources present a significant alternative to commercial hydrophilic membranes for gases and ethanol dehydration. To meet industry requirements, the mechanical and barrier properties of the films can be improved by the inclusion of inert impermeable fillers and/or the chemical modification of the polysaccharides. The adsorption of proteins, dyes, and pharmaceutical compounds using a cellulose-based polymer is discussed. Despite their unique characteristics, polysaccharide production costs are still higher than most synthetic polymers. This is a challenge that can be overcome by scaling up the production and by valorizing agro-industrial wastes and by-products to make the application of polysaccharide membranes/films in the food and industry sectors more widespread. The need to find sustainable solutions to conventional plastics has driven research into alternative materials, including bioplastics, which represent a promising option for reducing pollution and enhancing the value of renewable resources. In this study, bioplastics made from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and proteins extracted from the larvae of Black Soldier Fly (BSF), an insect capable of converting organic waste into high-value biomass, were produced and characterized. The proteins were obtained by hydrolysis of defatted BSF larvae with superheated water, avoiding harsh chemical reagents. Next, polymer films were fabricated by mixing PVA and hydrolyzed BSF proteins in different proportions and analyzed for morphological, physical-chemical, mechanical and biodegradability characteristics. The results obtained show that as the BSF protein content increases, the films show a reduction in thermal stability and mechanical properties, and also, they exhibit higher biodegradability, correlated with higher wettability, solubility and ability to absorb moisture. This research highlights the value of using organic waste-fed insects as a resource for bioplastic production, offering an alternative to traditional polymers and contributing to the transition to sustainable materials. Volatile C2–C5 olefins are important bulk chemicals in the polymer industry. Traditionally, C2–C5 olefins are produced from cracked petroleum resources using an energy-consuming and hazardous distillation method. Currently, volatile olefins can be produced from renewable biomass. To obtain polymer-grade volatile olefins from diversified resources, more sustainable and feasible separation techniques need to be developed. This review focuses on two updated separation techniques for C2–C5 olefins: (a) adsorption separation, which separates olefins through porous affinity, the pi complexation effect, and size-exclusion and gate-opening sieving, and (b) liquid absorption separation, which utilizes either organic solvents or ionic liquids for olefin separation. In this review, different separation techniques are compared in terms of their mechanisms and operation conditions in the separation of different types of C2–C5 olefins from variable resources, such as cracked ethylene/propylene/butylene/isoprene and bio-isoprene.
