Oak wood is a popular construction material in Europe. In the course of its service life, this wood is subject to structural changes resulting from the environmental conditions to which it is exposed, in addition to the effects of aging. Samples of naturally occurring historic European oak (Quercus robur L.) were obtained from foundation piles that were utilized to reinforce the riverbanks in Poland, the Vistula River basin, dating to the 2nd century, as well as from a 14th-century settlement on the river in Slupsk. Reference wood was also obtained from contemporary harvesting operations in the vicinity of Slupsk, Poland. The presence of structural changes resulting from partial wood degradation was confirmed through the utilization of FTIR spectroscopy analysis, SEM with BSD microscopy, and chromatic parameters. The differences in the color of historic and reference wood were significant (based on Kruskal–Wallis test = 46.38, where p < 0.001). The results of chemical analysis showed an increase in the proportion of lignin and a decrease in carbohydrate components for the old wood. A higher degree of change in lignin content was observed in historic wood (32–38%) compared to the fresh wood sample (25%). In recent years, the increasing complexity of shield tunneling environments has made it critical to control the deformation of adjacent excavation structures and surrounding soils. This study employs numerical simulation using MIDAS GTS/NX to comprehensively analyze the spatial interaction factors between shield tunnels and wall-pile-anchor-supported foundation pits. Structural parameters of the retaining system and tunneling conditions are also evaluated to identify the key factors influencing construction-induced deformation. The results show that the maximum settlement of the adjacent retaining wall occurs when the tunnel burial depth reaches 1.4L, where L is the height of the diaphragm wall. In addition, when the horizontal distance between the tunnel and the excavation is less than 0.75D (D being the tunnel diameter), significant settlement deformation is observed in the nearby support structures. A linear correlation is also identified between the variation in tunnel crown settlement and the excavation depth of the overlying pit during tunnel undercrossing. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis indicates that increasing the embedment depth of the diaphragm wall effectively reduces horizontal displacement at the wall base. Increasing the wall thickness decreases displacement in the upper section of the wall. Similarly, increasing pile diameter and anchor length and diameter, while reducing the inclination angle of anchors, are all effective in minimizing the lateral displacement of the support structure. Green and low-carbon filling materials, primarily composed of dredged waste fills, are commonly used in the foundation of coastal highways. These materials possess high water content and under-consolidation characteristics, which can lead to differential settlement between piles and the surrounding environment. However, mechanical models of negative friction in piles within recycled dredged waste fills are insufficiently developed and presented. A mechanical model for the negative friction of a single pile in a composite foundation, consisting of dredged waste fills and other materials, is established based on the load transfer method. Through centrifugal model testing and numerical simulations, the development of negative friction and the migration pattern of the neutral point are analyzed and clarified. The results show that the theoretical model based on improved transfer function can effectively predict the neutral point position and negative friction value (average relative error < 6.5%). The theoretical analysis and experimental results indicate that the downward load due to negative friction increases nonlinearly. The loading strength exhibits a clear relationship with the consolidation process. Additionally, the dynamic evolution of the neutral point position is strongly correlated with consolidation of dredged fills. The size of pile foundation significantly influences the distribution of negative friction. Results show that the increment in negative friction for a pile with a 1.05 m diameter is 7.3% higher than that for a pile with a 1.5 m diameter. Smaller-diameter piles are more susceptible to negative friction due to the higher friction strength per unit area. The negative frictional resistance will enter a stable period after 50 months of settlement. The investigation can provide significant references for the design of pile foundations in areas with reclaimed materials, improving the stability and safety of pile foundations in practical engineering. Designing deep foundations in densely urbanized areas presents significant challenges due to complex soil conditions, high groundwater levels, and the proximity of sensitive infrastructure. This study addresses these challenges through the development and numerical analysis of a combined pile–raft foundation (CPRF) system for a 75 m tall hotel tower in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The construction site is characterized by heterogeneous soil layers and is located adjacent to a historic quay wall and bridge abutments, necessitating strict deformation control and robust structural performance. A comprehensive three-dimensional finite element model was developed using PLAXIS 3D to simulate staged construction and soil–structure interaction (SSI). The CPRF system comprises a 2 m thick triangular raft and 34 large-diameter bored piles (1.5 m in diameter, 40–45 m in length), designed to achieve a load-sharing ratio of 0.89. The raft contributes significantly to the overall bearing capacity, reducing bending moments and settlement. The predicted settlement of the high-rise structure remains within 45 mm, while displacement of adjacent heritage structures does not exceed critical thresholds (≤30 mm), ensuring compliance with serviceability criteria. The study provides validated stiffness parameters for superstructure design and demonstrates the effectiveness of CPRF systems in mitigating geotechnical risks in historically sensitive urban environments. By integrating advanced numerical modeling with staged construction simulation and heritage preservation criteria, the research contributes to the evolving practice of performance-based foundation design. The findings support the broader applicability of CPRFs in infrastructure-dense settings and offer a methodological framework for future projects involving complex SSI and cultural heritage constraints. This paper addresses the issue of reduced lifespan of coastal concrete piles due to chloride ion corrosion. A combination of concrete mix optimization and pile geometry improvement measures is proposed. Based on the diffusion coefficient optimization of Fick’s second law, the service life prediction of concrete piles in corrosive environments is completed. The results show that, compared to single slag incorporation and the “slag-fly ash” dual-component mix, the “slag-fly ash-corrosion inhibitor” triple-component concrete achieves a 28-day compressive strength of 67.4 MPa, and the chloride ion diffusion coefficient is reduced to 1.14 × 10−12 m2/s, significantly improving overall performance. Finite element simulations reveal that, compared to ordinary square piles, cut-corner square piles can effectively alleviate stress concentration at the pile tip and reduce settlement. The maximum stress is 3.94 MPa, and the settlement is 22.64 mm, representing reductions of about 16.3% and 15.5%, respectively, compared to ordinary square piles. Concrete service life prediction confirms that the concrete with corrosion inhibitors has a predicted service life of 31.5 years, extending 7.4 years and 13.3 years longer than the single slag and the “slag-fly ash” dual-component groups, respectively. The “material-structure” optimization theory proposed in this study provides a theoretical basis and technical path for the long-life design of coastal engineering pile foundations. Full article

This study presents a numerical and experimental evaluation of axial load transfer mechanisms in deep foundations constructed in stratified cohesive soils in İzmir, Türkiye. A full-scale bi-directional static load test equipped with strain gauges was conducted on a barrette pile to investigate depth-dependent mobilization of shaft resistance. A finite element model was developed and calibrated using field-observed load–settlement and strain data to replicate the pile–soil interaction and deformation behavior. The analysis revealed a shaft-dominated load transfer behavior, with progressive mobilization concentrated in intermediate-depth cohesive layers. Sensitivity analysis identified the undrained stiffness (Eu) as the most influential parameter governing pile settlement. A strong polynomial correlation was established between calibrated Eu values and SPT N60, offering a practical tool for preliminary design. Additionally, strain energy distribution was evaluated as a supplementary metric, enhancing the interpretation of mobilization zones beyond conventional stress-based methods. The integrated approach provides valuable insights for performance-based foundation design in layered cohesive ground, supporting the development of site-calibrated numerical models informed by full-scale testing data. A novel prefabricated pile foundation is presented to improve the disaster resistance of the pole line. Bearing performance analysis of prefabricated inclined pile foundations for electric poles under downward pressure-horizontal loading is carried out, and the effects of prefabricated foundation dimensions and pile inclination on the horizontal load–displacement curves at the top of the poles, the horizontal displacement and settlement at the top of the piles, the horizontal displacement and tilt rate of the poles’ bodies and piles bending moments are investigated. The findings indicate the following: as the prefabricated foundation size grows, the bearing capacity of the foundation improves, and the anti-overturning ability of the electric pole improves; the foundation size increases from 0.9 m to 1.35 m, the anti-overturning bearing capacity of the foundation increases by 15.77%, the maximum bending moment of the foundation pile body increases by 19.7%, and the maximum bending moment occurs at about 0.2 m of the pile body; the bearing capacity of inclined piles is larger than that of straight piles—with an increase in the pile inclination angle, the foundation bearing performance increases, and the overturning bearing capacity of the poles increases; the pile inclination angle grows from 0° to 20°, the overturning bearing performance of the foundation increases by 19.2%, the maximum bending moment of the foundation piles reduces by 21.2%, and the maximum of the bending moment occurs at the pile body at a position of about 0.2 m. Field foundation pile loading tests were conducted in the context of an actual bridge pile foundation project. The test data were analyzed to determine the reasons for the variation in the complex geological conditions of the seashore. Moreover, finite element analysis was conducted to evaluate the influence of pile length and diameter on the settlement of coastal friction foundation piles. Increasing the pile length from 65 m to 75 m reduced the settlement by 25.7%, while increasing the diameter from 1.5 m to 2.0 m led to a 35.9% reduction. Increasing the pile spacing reduced the amount of structural settlement. Group pile foundation pile spacings should be 2.5–3.0 D. Pile group superposition reduced the most obvious effects and the settlement reduction rate was the fastest. Under seismic conditions, the pile group foundation exhibited 5.60 times greater horizontal displacement, 3.57 times higher bending moment, and 5.30 times increased shear force relative to static loading. The formula for predicting the settlement of oversized friction pile group foundations was modified based on settlement values calculated using finite elements. The revised formula is suitable for calculating the settlement of friction pile group foundations in coastal areas. Full article

To address the issue of structural tilting caused by uneven foundation settlement in soft soil areas, this study combined a specific engineering case to conduct numerical simulations of the rectification process for an inclined reinforced concrete building using ABAQUS finite element software. Micropile-raft combined jacking technology was employed, applying staged jacking forces (2400 kN for Axis A, 2200 kN for Axis B, and 1700 kN for Axis C) with precise control through 20 incremental steps. The results demonstrate that this technology effectively halted structural tilting, reducing the maximum inclination rate from 0.51% to 0.05%, significantly below the standard limit. Post-rectification, the peak structural stress decreased by 42%, and displacements were markedly reduced. However, the jacking process led to a notable increase in the column axial forces and directional changes in beam bending moments, reflecting the dynamic redistribution of internal forces. The study confirms that micropile-raft combined jacking technology offers both controllability and safety, while optimized counterforce pile layouts enhance the long-term stability of the rectification system. Based on stress and displacement cloud analysis, a monitoring scheme is proposed, forming an integrated “rectification-monitoring-reinforcement” solution, which provides a technical framework for building rectification in soft soil regions. This study investigates the behavior and performance of a newly proposed cone-top pile foundation designed to improve stability in layered, deformable, or strain-sensitive soils. Traditional shallow and uniform conical foundations often suffer from excessive settlement and reduced capacity when subjected to vertical loads and horizontal soil deformations. To address these limitations, a hybrid foundation was developed that integrates an inverted conical base with a central pile shaft and a rolling joint interface between the foundation and the superstructure. Laboratory model tests, full-scale field loading experiments, and axisymmetric numerical simulations using Plaxis 2D (Version 8.2) were conducted to evaluate the foundation’s bearing capacity, settlement behavior, and load transfer mechanisms. Results showed that the cone-top pile foundation exhibited lower settlements and higher load resistance than columnar foundations under similar loading conditions, particularly in the presence of horizontal tensile strains. The load was effectively distributed through the conical base and transferred into deeper soil layers via the pile shaft, while the rolling joint reduced stress transmission to the structure. The findings support the use of cone-top pile foundations in soft soils, seismic areas and areas affected by underground mining, where conventional designs may be inadequate. This study provides a validated and practical design alternative for challenging geotechnical environments. Full article

Taking the shield construction of Xiamen Metro Line 2 tunnel side-crossing the Tianzhushan overpass and under-crossing the Shen-Hai Expressway as the engineering background, FLAC3D 6.0 software was used to examine the deformation of adjacent structures based on shield construction parameters in upper-soft and lower-hard strata. The reliability of the numerical simulation results was verified by comparing measured and predicted deformations. The study results indicate that deformation of the pile will occur during the construction of the tunnel shield next to the pile foundation. The shape of the pile deformation curve in the horizontal direction is significantly influenced by the distance from the pile foundation to the adjacent tunnel’s centerline, as well as by soil bin pressure, grouting layer thickness, and stress release coefficient. During the tunnel shield construction beneath the expressway, increasing the soil bin pressure, the grouting layer thickness, and reducing the stress release coefficient can effectively minimize surface deformation and differential settlement on both sides of the deformation joints between the bridge and the roadbed. The practice shows that, by optimizing shield construction parameters in upper-soft and lower-hard strata, the deformation of nearby bridges and pavements can be kept within allowable limits. This is significant for reducing construction time and costs. The findings offer useful references for similar projects. Full article

The Deep Cement Mixing Integrated Drilling, Mixing, and Jetting (DMJ) technique was innovatively developed by incorporating high-pressure jetting apertures into the mixing blades to enhance the bearing capacity of deep cement-mixed piles. In this study, the bearing characteristics of DMJ pile composite foundations under embankment loading are investigated using numerical simulation. Through comparative simulations involving various pile configurations, the results demonstrate that DMJ pile composite foundations exhibit significantly enhanced settlement control compared to conventional deep mixing piles. Notably, under identical area replacement ratios, the use of DMJ piles reduces total foundation settlement by approximately 30%. Furthermore, the findings indicate that larger pile diameters and smaller spacing are particularly effective in minimizing settlement. In terms of load transfer efficiency, DMJ piles are capable of transmitting embankment loads to depths of up to 15 m, surpassing the 10 m transfer depth observed in conventional pile systems. An analysis of excess pore water pressure further reveals that DMJ piles promote more effective dissipation, highlighting their superior performance in maintaining foundation stability under embankment loading. Pile–raft foundations are widely used in soft soil engineering due to their good integrity and high stiffness. However, traditional design methods independently design pile–raft foundations and superstructures, ignoring their interaction. This leads to significant deviations from actual conditions when the superstructure height increases, resulting in excessive costs and adverse effects on building stability. This study experimentally investigates the interaction characteristics of pile–raft foundations and superstructures in soft soil under different working conditions using a 1:10 geometric similarity model. The superstructure is a cast-in-place frame structure (beams, columns, and slabs) with bamboo skeletons with the same cross-sectional area as the piles and rafts, cast with concrete. The piles in the foundation use rectangular bamboo strips (side length ~0.2 cm) instead of steel bars, with M1.5 mortar replacing C30 concrete. The raft is also made of similar materials. The results show that the soil settlement significantly increases under the combined action of the pile–raft and superstructure with increasing load. The superstructure stiffness constrains foundation deformation, enhances bearing capacity, and controls differential settlement. The pile top reaction force exhibits a logarithmic relationship with the number of floors, coordinating the pile bearing performance. Designers should consider the superstructure’s constraint of the foundation deformation and strengthen the flexural capacity of inner pile tops and bottom columns for safety and economy. Full article

Bridge Deformation Monitoring Combining 3D Laser Scanning with Multi-Scale Algorithms

To address the inefficiencies and limited spatial resolution of traditional single-point monitoring techniques, this study proposes a multi-scale analysis method that integrates the Multi-Scale Model-to-Model Cloud Comparison (M3C2) algorithm with least-squares plane fitting. This approach employs the M3C2 algorithm for qualitative full-field deformation detection and utilizes least-squares plane fitting for quantitative feature extraction. When applied to the approach span of a cross-river bridge in Hubei Province, China, this method leverages dense point clouds (greater than 500 points per square meter) acquired using a Leica RTC360 scanner. Data preprocessing incorporates curvature-adaptive cascade denoising, achieving over 98% noise removal while retaining more than 95% of structural features, along with octree-based simplification. By extracting multi-level slice features from bridge decks and piers, this method enables the simultaneous analysis of global trends and local deformations. The results revealed significant deformation, with an average settlement of 8.2 mm in the left deck area. The bridge deck exhibited a deformation trend characterized by left and higher right in the vertical direction, while the bridge piers displayed noticeable tilting, particularly with the maximum offset of the rear pier columns reaching 182.2 mm, which exceeded the deformation of the front pier. The bridge deck’s micro-settlement error was ±1.2 mm, and the pier inclination error was ±2.8 mm, meeting the Chinese Highway Bridge Maintenance Code (JTG H11-2004) and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) standards, and the multi-scale algorithm achieved engineering-level accuracy. Utilizing point cloud densities >500 pt/m2, the M3C2 algorithm achieved a spatial resolution of 0.5 mm, enabling sub-millimeter full-field analysis for complex scenarios. This method significantly enhances bridge safety monitoring precision, enhances the precision of intelligent systems monitoring, and supports the development of targeted systems as pile foundation reinforcement efforts and as improvements to foundations. Marine soft clay is characterized by a high water content and low strength, exhibiting pronounced creep deformation under long-term loading that threatens the serviceability and durability of coastal infrastructure. Accordingly, this study develops a creep constitutive model that combines elastic, plastic, and viscous effects and quantitatively evaluates time-dependent deformation under varying water contents and stress levels to provide reliable prediction tools for tunnel, excavation, and pile-foundation design. Cyclic creep tests were carried out on reconstituted marine soft clay with water contents of 40–60% and stress ratios of 0.4–1.2 using a pneumatic, fully digital, closed-loop triaxial apparatus. A “nonlinear spring–Bingham slider–dual viscous dashpot in parallel with a standard Kelvin dashpot” element assembly was proposed, and the complete stress–strain relationship was derived. Experimental data were fitted with Python to generate a creep-strain polynomial and verify the model accuracy. The predicted–measured creep difference remained within 10%, and the surface-fit coefficient of determination reached R2 = 0.97, enabling rapid estimation of deformation for the given stress and time conditions. The findings offer an effective method for the precise long-term settlement prediction of marine soft clay and significantly enhance the reliability of the deformation assessments in coastal civil-engineering projects.
