Traditional stator-permanent magnet flux-reversal motors have the problems of large cogging torque, limited improvement of power density, and low fault-tolerant performance. Based on the traditional flux-reversal motor, this paper proposes a design scheme of a flux-reversal motor with a stator-segmented double-winding and double-sequence permanent magnet structure. The motor adopts a stator-segmented modular design, each independent stator segment is connected by permanent magnets, and a bipolar permanent magnet array is arranged on the teeth of the stator segment. Meanwhile, a double-winding system composed of independent power windings and fault-tolerant windings is configured to realize the dual characteristics of high power density and high reliability. A two-dimensional finite element model is established to simulate and analyze the motor, which verifies the feasibility of the motor structure design. The simulation results show that the motor has improved operation stability, better fault-tolerant performance, and theoretically lower maintenance cost, as well as being especially suitable for the petroleum and chemical industries, electric vehicles, aerospace, and other application fields with high requirements for motor reliability and power density. Droplet manipulation constitutes a fundamental operation in numerous bio-microfluidic applications, including but not limited to medical diagnostics and targeted drug delivery. Among the various technologies developed for this purpose, magnetic digital microfluidics (MDMF) has emerged as a compelling approach due to its inherent advantages of contamination-free actuation, low cost, and configurational flexibility. Nevertheless, conventional MDMF remains constrained by its reliance on bulky instrumentation and substantial power consumption for generating controllable magnetic fields, which limit its in-field applications. To address these limitations, this work presents a programmable and portable electromagnetic microfluidic droplet manipulation platform that synergistically integrates static and dynamic magnetic fields to enable non-contact, high-precision droplet control under ultra-low power conditions. The proposed system comprises an electromagnetic actuation module, a permanent magnet, and a glass substrate coated with Teflon film. The entire system is secured by a PMMA support structure, within which a glass substrate is mounted and spatially separated from the permanent magnet. The PMMA support is fabricated using a milling process, offering a simple manufacturing procedure and high structural reusability and reproducibility. The control logic is implemented on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) development board, facilitating fully autonomous operation powered by a standard battery. The platform operates at a low voltage of 3.5 V and a driving current of 180 mA, corresponding to a total power consumption of merely 0.63 W, while achieving robust manipulation of droplets in the volume range of 0.5 to 5 μL. A maximum average droplet velocity of up to 0.6 cm/s was attained under optimal conditions. The proposed platform offers a scalable and energy-efficient solution for portable droplet-based assays and holds significant promise for integration into point-of-care diagnostic tools and field-ready biochemical analysis systems. The platform demonstrates excellent operational stability and reproducibility, as validated by repeated actuation experiments with a positioning deviation of approximately 0.1 mm under optimized conditions. The increasing demand for electric power in hybrid electric aircraft platforms prompts the development of multi-megawatt generators featuring high specific power, compactness and intrinsic fault tolerance. Air-core machines constitute a promising solution to overcome the magnetic saturation and mass limitations of conventional iron-core designs. This paper presents a comparative electromagnetic design study of two air-core synchronous generator topologies for aircraft applications, namely a permanent magnet machine with a Halbach array rotor and an electrically excited synchronous machine featuring a high-temperature superconducting field winding. Both the generators are designed for identical output and adopt a double three-phase stator winding to enhance safety and redundancy. The Halbach array machine is used as the reference configuration representative of a technologically mature solution, whereas the superconducting generator targets high magnetic loadings by means of the superconducting excitation, to minimize the active volume. The solutions proposed in this paper are developed in the frame of a national (Italian) research project dedicated to the study of stages of multi-megawatt fault-tolerant aircraft generators. Floating roof seal integrity is critical for safety and emission control in petroleum storage tanks, yet current detection methods suffer from spark risks and operational inefficiencies. This study proposes an intrinsically safe, non-contact leakage detection system utilizing oil-swellable rubber actuators coupled with a linear magnetic transmission mechanism. By integrating quasi-static experiments with finite element simulations, we investigated the impact of permanent magnet geometry on transmission performance. The results establish a “thickness priority principle”, revealing that increasing magnet thickness nonlinearly enhances shear force and transmission efficiency, whereas increasing width yields diminishing returns due to magnetic flux leakage and added mass. Furthermore, comparative analysis demonstrates that optimized monolithic magnets significantly outperform arrayed configurations, achieving a 471% increase in shear force and a 3.7-fold improvement in transmission efficiency. Based on these findings, a practical detection device was designed and verified against API 650 standards. The proposed solution offers a reliable, electricity-free, and real-time monitoring method for early leakage detection in hazardous tank environments. Full article

This paper investigates the feasibility of an interior permanent magnet (IPM) rotor for 1 MW-class high-speed permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) in a hybrid propulsion system of electrified aviation. A double-layer IPM machine and a surface-mounted PM (SPM) benchmark machine with Halbach-array PMs, which are typically employed in aviation applications; are designed using the same design specifications, the same stator, double-three-phase winding layout, physical air-gap length, outer and inner diameters of rotor; and the same materials. The rotor robustness of the IPM machine using high-strength iron material has been verified through mechanical strength analysis with an outstanding safety factor margin. The electromagnetic performances of IPM and SPM benchmark machines are compared. It is found that the IPM design can achieve similar high torque/power density and high efficiency to the SPM benchmark machine, using 48% less rare-earth PM materials and a simpler rotor structure without a carbon fiber sleeve for easy manufacturing. The investigation confirms the feasibility of IPM topology for MW-class high-speed aviation propulsion machines for lower cost and more sustainable purposes. Full article

A capsule endoscope (CE) provides noninvasive access to the gastrointestinal tract, offering diagnostic information that cannot be obtained through external imaging alone. However, during the examination inside the stomach, the CE’s posture may change rapidly as it moves within a dynamically deforming organ, making it difficult to determine its orientation using only the onboard camera feedback. To address this problem, this study proposes a method that employs an external array of Hall Effect Sensors (HES) to estimate the capsule’s position and orientation in real time, based on the magnetic field generated by a permanent magnet (PM) embedded inside the capsule, without the need for any additional internal sensors. This approach introduces a unified magnetic actuation and localization framework that enables real-time 5-degree-of-freedom posture estimation using only the internal PM of the capsule. Furthermore, the proposed system features an integrated architecture capable of simultaneous actuation and localization. To enhance system practicality, the sensor module and communication board were combined into a single unit that employs a digital serial communication scheme, eliminating the need for analog to digital conversion of sensing signals. By avoiding additional onboard sensors and employing a PM-based actuation system, the proposed system simplifies hardware configuration by preserving capsule miniaturization and by eliminating the high power consumption and thermal issues associated with electromagnet-based actuation, while maintaining accurate real-time tracking performance. Through an optimization process, the system achieved a position error of less than 2 mm and an angular error within 2° over a sensing range of up to 60 mm. Repeated experiments further validated the system’s effectiveness and reliability under realistic operating conditions, demonstrating its feasibility for compact and clinically applicable active capsule endoscopy systems. To address the waste of mechanical energy from suspension vibrations during vehicle operation, this study proposes a vehicle suspension vibration energy harvester based on the piezoelectric effect and nonlinear magnetic coupling. It aims to recover the mechanical energy generated by suspension vibrations in the course of vehicle operation. The device adopts a multi-cantilever beam array structure. Permanent magnets are symmetrically arranged on the free ends of cantilevers and suspension springs, which enables non-contact excitation and system frequency regulation. It converts mechanical energy into electrical energy by virtue of the direct piezoelectric effect. A finite element simulation model was developed in the study. A dedicated vibration test platform was also constructed. Experimental results show the following performance: Under the operating conditions of 16.75 Hz excitation frequency and 10 kΩ load resistance, a single cantilever beam can generate a peak voltage of 9.59 V. Its maximum output power reaches 7.67 mW. Under simulated Class D road conditions and at a vehicle speed of 90 km/h, the array made up of eight cantilever beams delivers a total output power of 414.37 mW. This study provides a viable technical solution for vehicle suspension vibration energy recovery. It promotes the full utilization of wasted energy, and it is of great significance for advancing sustainable development in the transportation sector. Full article

In low-amplitude and low-frequency vibration environments, the energy harvesting efficiency of self-powered wireless sensor nodes is insufficient, limiting their long-term autonomous operation. To address this issue, a micro piezoelectric–electromagnetic hybrid energy harvester is designed, aiming to enhance energy capture efficiency through structural integration and parameter optimization. The study is conducted entirely through numerical simulations. A coaxial integrated architecture is adopted, combining a piezoelectric cantilever beam array with an electromagnetic induction module. The piezoelectric layer uses lead magnesium niobate–lead titanate (PMN-PT) solid solution material with a thickness of 0.2 mm. The electromagnetic module employs copper wire coils with a diameter of 0.08 mm, winding 1500–3000 turns, paired with N52-type neodymium–iron–boron (NdFeB) permanent magnets. To improve energy conversion efficiency, the optimization parameters include the length-to-thickness ratio of the cantilever beam, the mass of the tip mass, the number of coil turns, and the spacing of the permanent magnets. Each parameter is set at four levels for orthogonal experiments. A multi-physics coupling model is established using ANSYS Workbench 2023, covering structural dynamics, piezoelectric effects, and the electromagnetic induction module. The mesh size is set to 0.1 mm. The energy output characteristics are analyzed under vibration frequencies of 0.3–12 Hz and amplitudes of 0.2–1.0 mm. Simulation results show that the optimized hybrid harvester achieves 45% higher energy conversion efficiency than a single piezoelectric structure and 31% higher than a traditional separated hybrid structure within the 0.3–12 Hz low-frequency range. Under a 6 Hz frequency and 0.6 mm amplitude, the output power density reaches 3.5 mW/cm3, the peak open-circuit voltage is 4.1 V, and the peak short-circuit current is 1.3 mA. Under environmental conditions of 20–88% humidity and −15–65 °C temperature, the device maintains over 94% stability in energy output. After 1.2 million vibration cycles, structural integrity remains above 96%, and energy conversion efficiency decreases by no more than 5%. The proposed coaxial hybrid structure and multi-parameter orthogonal optimization method effectively enhance energy harvesting performance in low-amplitude, low-frequency environments. The simulation design parameters and analysis procedures provide a reference for the development of similar micro hybrid energy harvesters and support the performance optimization of self-powered wireless sensor nodes. This paper presents a 2D micro-conveyance device based on a 3 × 3 electromagnetic digital actuator array. This device allows the conveyed object to be moved between several discrete positions distributed in the xy-plane through a collaborative actuation of the digital actuators. Each digital actuator includes a mobile permanent magnet placed in a square cavity and can be moved between four discrete positions. An analytical model of the digital actuators was proposed and used to design the conveyance device. Then, a prototype was built using rapid prototyping techniques and was experimentally characterized. The reachable workspace of the conveyance device is 56 mm × 56 mm in the xy-plane, and the proposed architecture enables the workspace to be easily enlarged by adding elementary modules. The distance between two discrete positions is 4 mm, and the positioning repeatability was measured as 5.5 µm. The maximum conveyance velocity and transportable mass were found to be up to 16 mm.s−1 and 15 g, respectively. Full article

Lanthanide coordination polymers have been developed at a fast rate during the past two decades due to their appealing applications in the modern field of materials science and emerging technologies like luminescence, magnetism, sensing, gas adsorption, and catalysis. The role of lanthanides in imparting specific properties to the coordination polymers has been fully documented in extensive studies carried out by numerous research groups. It has been shown that because lanthanide(III) ions possess a variable coordination number, they readily build two-dimensional and three-dimensional architectures with definite channels, permanent pores, and distinct surface areas. Due to their strong oxophilic propensity and hard Lewis acid character, lanthanides favor the construction of stable coordination polymers and MOF configurations by strongly binding the coordinating groups of the organic linkers. Associated with palladium complexes, the lanthanide ions provide synergistic effects with Lewis acid sites, beneficial to the catalytic activity. These attractive characteristics of lanthanides enabled them to be fruitfully applied in Pd-Ln coordination polymers with catalytic properties. This review covers an array of Pd-Ln coordination polymers applied as heterogeneous catalysts in Suzuki–Miyaura C(sp2)-C(sp2) cross-coupling reactions. The activity and chemoselectivity of Pd(II) ions and Pd nanoparticles associated in coordination polymers with different lanthanides from a selected array of rare earth elements (Eu, Sm, Eu, Gd, Pr, Nd, Ce, La, or Tb) is discussed. High yields (>99%) are attained under optimized reaction conditions. The specific role of lanthanides and organic ligands in creating sustainable and recyclable heterogeneous Pd catalysts is evidenced. Mechanistic aspects of the C(sp2)-C(sp2) cross-coupling reactions are considered. The synergistic interaction between lanthanides and palladium as well as with the organic ligands is highlighted. To achieve global carbon-neutrality goals, magnetic levitation (maglev) technologies offer a promising pathway toward sustainable, energy-efficient transportation systems. In this study, a comprehensive methodology was developed to analyse and optimise the levitation performance of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) maglev systems. Several permanent magnet guideway (PMG) configurations were compared, and an optimised PMG Halbach array design was identified that enhances flux concentration and significantly improves levitation performance. To accurately model the electromagnetic interaction between the HTS bulk and the external magnetic field, finite element models based on the H-formulation were established in both two dimensions (2D) and three dimensions (3D). An HTS maglev demonstrator was built using YBCO bulks, and an experimental platform was constructed to measure levitation force. While the 2D model offers fast computation, it shows deviations from the measurements due to geometric simplifications, whereas the 3D model predicts levitation forces for the cylindrical bulk with much higher accuracy, with errors remaining below 10%. The strong agreement between experimental measurements and the 3D simulation across the entire force–height cycle confirms that the proposed model reliably reproduces the electromagnetic coupling and resulting levitation forces in HTS maglev systems. The paper provides a practical and systematic reference for the optimal design and experimental validation of HTS bulk-based maglev systems. Full article

This study addresses the issues with traditional rolling protection bearings in vertical magnetic levitation flywheel energy storage systems (FESSs), which are prone to impact, wear, and temperature rise under abnormal conditions, such as drops. It designed a permanent magnet axial protection bearing based on a Halbach array, utilizing N42SH permanent magnet material. The five-layer Halbach array achieved a maximum axial magnetic force of 86 KN and a maximum air gap magnetic flux density of 2.2 T, meeting the application requirements. Simulation results, combined with rotor drop dynamics and thermal analysis, show that under an 8000 rpm drop condition, the permanent magnet bearing reduces radial and axial contact forces by approximately 60% and 54%, respectively, and wear by around 70%. Additionally, the maximum system temperature decreases from 109 °C to 74 °C, with a 32% reduction in temperature rise. Friction experimental analysis indicates that low frequency, low load, and moderate temperatures improve friction stability and reduce wear. Overall, the permanent magnet axial protective bearing effectively mitigates drop impact, reduces friction heat and wear, and enhances the safety and reliability of the flywheel energy storage system under abnormal working conditions, providing valuable theoretical support and a design reference for engineering applications. Optimization Analysis of the Dynamic Performance of Permanent Magnet Levitation Vehicles Based on Magnetic Wheelset

The permanent magnet levitation (PML) transportation system utilizes Halbach arrays to achieve zero-power levitation. However, the system’s lateral negative stiffness characteristic leads to a significant increase in lateral force during operation, exacerbating lateral vibration and compromising system stability. Taking the Xingguo Line PML system as the research object, this study systematically analyzes the nonlinear characteristics of the levitation force and lateral force in a single-point levitation system through theoretical modeling, finite element simulation, and experimental validation. The concept of a ‘Magnetic Wheelset’ coupling the left and right levitation points of the bogie is proposed. The influence of five mounting forms—Aligned, X-type, Different center distance, Double V-type, and Single V-type—on the levitation performance of the Magnetic Wheelset is investigated. The coefficient of variation (CV) method is employed to evaluate force stability, and an optimal case is subsequently screened out using a dual-objective constraint approach that incorporates mean levitation force and lateral force thresholds. Results indicate that the X-type mounting at 25° is the optimal case. At 40 km/h, compared to the baseline Aligned configuration, the root mean square (RMS) values of the bogie’s vertical and lateral vibration accelerations are reduced by 14.7% and 23.8%, respectively. The vehicle’s vertical and lateral ride comfort indices decrease by 0.33 and 0.27, respectively, and the track beam’s vertical and lateral vibration accelerations are reduced by 19.4% and 13.3%. The methodology presented in this study provides a valuable reference for vibration suppression in PML systems. Full article

Efficient permanent magnets that are concomitantly economically viable are of paramount importance for allowing industrial stakeholders to maintain a growing and competitive advantage. This study provides a comprehensive overview of recent developments in the field of rare-earth-free nanocomposite permanent magnets based on hexaferrites. The basic phenomenology of exchange-spring-coupled nanocomposites, comprising hard and soft magnetic components, is thoroughly explained. The use of hexaferrites as a hard phase, serving as a viable alternative to rare-earth-based permanent magnets, is extensively discussed, taking economical, accessibility-related, and environmental aspects into consideration. State-of-the-Art architectures of hard–soft magnetic nanocomposites based on hexaferrites as the hard magnetic phase, ranging from typical nanocomposites to nanowire arrays and special core–shell-like morphologies, are explored in detail. The maximum energy product (BH)max, representing the quality indicator for permanent magnets, is investigated by taking into consideration various degrees of freedom, such as substitutions, geometry, size, shape, preparation, and processing conditions (annealing), volume fraction of magnetic phases, and interfaces. Promising strategies to overcome the present challenges (e.g., size control, coercivity–remanence trade-off, and optimization for large-scale production) are provided within the framework of future permanent magnet design. WISPFI Experiment: Prototype Development

Axions and axion-like particles (ALPs) are well-motivated dark matter (DM) candidates that couple with photons in external magnetic fields. The parameter space around m a 50 meV remains largely unexplored by haloscope experiments. We present the first prototype of Weakly Interacting Sub-eV Particles (WISP) Searches on a Fiber Interferometer (WISPFI), a table-top, model-independent scheme based on resonant photon–axion conversion in a hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (HC-PCF) integrated into a Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI). Operating near a dark fringe with active phase-locking, combined with amplitude modulation, the interferometer converts axion-induced photon disappearance into a measurable signal. A 2 W, 1550 nm laser is coupled with a 1 m-long HC-PCF placed inside a ∼2 T permanent magnet array, probing a fixed axion mass of m a 49 meV with a projected sensitivity of g a γ γ 1.3× 10 9 GeV−1 for a measurement time of 30 days. Future upgrades, including pressure tuning of the effective refractive index and implementation of a Fabry–Pérot cavity, could extend the accessible mass range and improve sensitivity, establishing WISPFI as a scalable platform to explore previously inaccessible regions of the axion parameter space.
