A friction composite material which contains cellulose fiber, carbon fiber, wollastonite, graphite, and resin for use in oil-cooled friction units, hydromechanical boxes, and couplings was developed. The fabrication technique includes the formation of a paper layer based on the mixture of stated fibers via a wet-laid process, impregnation of the layer with phenolic resin, and hot pressing onto a steel carrier. The infrared spectra of the polymeric base (phenolic resin) were studied by solvent extraction. The structural-phase analysis of the obtained material was carried out by the SEM method, and the particle size distribution parameters of the composite components were estimated based on the images of the sample surface. The surface roughness parameters of the samples are as follows: Ra = 5.7 μm Rz = 31.4 μm. The tribotechnical characteristics of the material were tested in an oil medium at a load of 5.0 MPa and a rotation mode of 2000 rpm for 180 min in a pair with a steel 45 counterbody. The coefficient of friction of the developed material was 0.11–0.12; the degree of wear was 6.17 × 10−6 μm/mm. The degree of compression deformation of the composite is 0.36%, and the compressive strength is 7.8 MPa. The calculated kinetic energy absorbed and power level are 205 J/cm2 and 110 W/cm2, respectively. The main tribotechnical characteristics of the developed friction material correspond to industrial analogues. Full article

To enhance the wear resistance of laser-clad coatings, this study investigates the underlying modulation mechanisms of scanning speed on the microstructure and properties of TiC-TiB2-reinforced 316L stainless steel composite coatings. TiC/TiB2 particle-reinforced 316L stainless steel composite coatings were fabricated on 45# steel substrates via laser cladding. Our analysis reveals that scanning speed critically governs the thermal cycle of the melt pool, thereby modulating the coating’s microstructure and properties: Lower scanning speeds prolong melt pool duration, consequently intensifying ceramic particle dissolution, coarsening, and tendencies toward agglomeration and settling. Conversely, higher scanning speeds promote rapid solidification, which both preserves ceramic particles and refines the matrix grains. With increasing scanning speed, accelerated melt pool cooling rates drive a microstructural transition from coarse dendrites to refined equiaxed grains, accompanied by dramatically enhanced uniformity in ceramic particle distribution. Coatings deposited at higher scanning speeds exhibit a 22% increase in hardness compared to those at lower speeds. Wear resistance evolution parallels this hardness trend: at 480 mm/min scanning speed, wear reduction can be expected, with the wear volume decreasing by 58.60% and the friction coefficient reducing by 42.1% relative to 120 mm/min. Carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites are widely used in aerospace due to their excellent strength-to-weight ratio and tailorable properties. However, these properties critically depend on the CFRP curing cycle. The commonly adopted manufacturer-recommended curing cycle (MRCC), designed to accommodate the most conservative conditions, involves prolonged curing times and high energy consumption. To overcome these limitations, this study proposes an efficient and adaptable method to determine the optimal curing cycle. The effects of varying heating rates on resin dynamic and isothermal–exothermic behavior were characterized via reaction kinetics analysis using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and rheological measurements. The activation energy of the reaction system was substituted into the modified Sun–Gang model, and the parameters were estimated using a particle swarm optimization algorithm. Based on the curing kinetic behavior of the resin, CFRP compression molding process orthogonal experiments were conducted. A weighted scoring system incorporating strength, energy consumption, and cycle time enabled multidimensional evaluation of optimized solutions. Applying this curing cycle optimization method to a commercial epoxy resin increased efficiency by 247.22% and reduced energy consumption by 35.7% while meeting general product performance requirements. These results confirm the method’s reliability and its significance for improving production efficiency. Full article

Aiming at the lightweight design of a bridge-shed integration structure, this paper presents a three-layered absorbing system in which a part of the sand cushion is replaced by expanded polystyrene (EPS) geofoam and the reinforced concrete (RC) protective slab is arranged above the sand cushion to enhance the composite system’s safety. A three-dimensional Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics–Finite Element Method (SPH-FEM) coupled numerical model is developed in LS-DYNA (Livermore Software Technology Corporation, Livermore, CA, USA, version R13.1.1), with its validity rigorously verified. The dynamic response of rockfall impacts on the shed slab with composite cushions of various thicknesses is analyzed by varying the thickness of sand and EPS materials. To optimize the cushion design, a specific energy dissipation ratio (SEDR), defined as the energy dissipation rate per unit mass (η/M), is introduced as a key performance metric. Furthermore, the complicated interactional mechanism between the rockfall and the optimum-thickness composite system is rationally interpreted, and the energy dissipation mechanism of the composite cushion is revealed. Using logistic regression, the ultimate stress state of the reactive powder concrete (RPC) slab is methodically analyzed, accounting for the speed and mass of the rockfall. The results are indicative of the fact that the composite cushion not only has less dead weight but also exhibits superior impact resistance compared to the 90 cm sand cushions; the impact resistance performance index SEDR of the three-layered absorbing system reaches 2.5, showing a remarkable 55% enhancement compared to the sand cushion (SEDR = 1.61). Additionally, both the sand cushion and the RC protective slab effectively dissipate most of the impact energy, while the EPS material experiences relatively little internal energy build-up in comparison. This feature overcomes the traditional vulnerability of EPS subjected to impact loads. One of the highlights of the present investigation is the development of an identification model specifically designed to accurately assess the stress state of RPC slabs under various rockfall impact conditions. The dispersion behavior of ceramic particles in aluminum alloys during rapid solidification critically affects the resulting microstructure and mechanical performance. In this study, we investigated the nucleation and growth of Al3(Sc,Zr) on TiB2 surfaces in a 2TiB2/Al–8Ni–0.6Sc–0.1Zr alloy, fabricated via wedge-shaped copper mold casting and laser surface remelting. Thermodynamic calculations were employed to optimize alloy composition, ensuring sufficient nucleation driving force under rapid solidification conditions. The results show that the formation of Al3(Sc,Zr)/TiB2 composite interfaces is highly dependent on cooling rate and plays a pivotal role in promoting uniform TiB2 dispersion. At an optimal cooling rate (~1200 °C/s), Al3(Sc,Zr) nucleates heterogeneously on TiB2, forming core–shell structures and enhancing particle engulfment into the α-Al matrix. Orientation relationship analysis reveals a preferred (111)α-Al//(0001)TiB2 alignment in Sc/Zr-containing samples. A classical nucleation model quantitatively explains the observed trends and reveals the critical cooling-rate window for composite interface formation. This work provides a mechanistic foundation for designing high-performance aluminum-based composites with uniformly dispersed reinforcements for additive manufacturing applications. Full article

This study investigates the improvement effect and micro-mechanism of guar gum and palm fibers, two eco-friendly materials, on expansive soil. The study uses disintegration tests, unconfined compressive strength tests, triaxial compression tests, and SEM analysis to evaluate the enhancement of mechanical properties. The results show that the guar gum–palm fiber composite significantly improves the compressive and shear strength of expansive soil. The optimal ratio is 2% guar gum, 0.4% palm fiber, and 6 mm palm fiber length. Increasing fiber length initially boosts and then reduces unconfined compressive strength. Guar gum increases unconfined compressive strength by 187.18%, further improved by 20.9% with palm fibers. When fiber length is fixed, increasing palm fiber content increases and then stabilizes peak stress and shear strength (cohesion and internal friction angle), improving by 27.30%, 52.1%, and 12.4%, respectively, compared to soil improved with only guar gum. Micro-analysis reveals that guar gum enhances bonding between soil particles via a gel matrix, improving water stability and mechanical properties, while palm fibers reinforce the soil and inhibit crack propagation. The synergistic effect significantly enhances composite-improved soil performance, offering economic and environmental benefits, and provides insights for expansive soil engineering management. Aluminum matrix composites provide an ideal solution for lightweight brake disks, but conventional casting processes are prone to crack initiation due to inhomogeneous reinforcement dispersion, gas porosity, and inadequate toughness. To break the conventional trade-off between high wear resistance and low toughness of brake disks, this study fabricated a bimetallic structure of SiCp/Al–Fe–V–Si aluminum matrix composite and cast ZL101 alloy using friction stir lap welding (FSLW). Then, the microstructural evolution, mechanical properties, and tribological behavior of the FSLW joints were studied by XRD, SEM, TEM, tensile testing, and tribological tests. The results showed that the FSLW process homogenized the distribution of SiC particle reinforcements in the SiCp/Al–Fe–V–Si composites. The Al12(Fe,V)3Si heat-resistant phase was not decomposed or coarsened, and the mechanical properties were maintained. The FSLW process refined the grains of the ZL101 aluminum alloy through recrystallization and fragmented eutectic silicon, improving elongation to 22%. A metallurgical bond formed at the joint interface. Tensile fracture occurred within the ZL101 matrix, demonstrating that the interfacial bond strength exceeded the alloy’s load-bearing capacity. In addition, the composites exhibited significantly enhanced wear resistance after FSLW, with their wear rate reduced by approximately 40% compared to the as-received materials, which was attributed to the homogenized SiC particle distribution and the activation of an oxidative wear mechanism. Glass ionomer cements (GICs) are bioactive restorative materials valued for their sustained ion release and remineralisation capacity. However, their long-term interactions with sound enamel and dentine remain underexplored. This 12-month in vitro study aimed to evaluate microstructural and compositional changes in sound dental tissues adjacent to four GICs—Ketac Universal, Fuji IX and Equia Forte Fil (conventional GICs) and the advanced Glass Carbomer (incorporating hydroxyapatite nanoparticles)—using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Glass Carbomer uniquely formed hydroxyapatite nanoparticles and mineralised regions indicative of active biomineralisation—features not observed with conventional GICs. It also demonstrated greater fluoride uptake into dentine and higher silicon incorporation in both enamel and dentine. Conventional GICs exhibited filler particle dissolution and mineral deposition within the matrix over time; among them, Equia Forte released the most fluoride while Fuji IX released the most strontium. Notably, ion uptake was consistently higher in dentine than in enamel for all materials. These findings indicate that Glass Carbomer possesses superior bioactivity and mineralising potential which may contribute to the reinforcement of sound dental tissues and the prevention of demineralisation. However, further in vivo studies are required to confirm these effects under physiological conditions. Full article

This study investigates the impact of partially replacing cement with fly ash (FA) on the mechanical performance of fiber-reinforced rubberized concrete (FRRC) incorporating waste tyre rubber and recycled macro-synthetic fibers (MSF). FRRC mixtures were prepared with varying fly ash replacement levels (0%, 25%, and 50%), rubber aggregate contents (0%, 10%, and 20% by volume of fine aggregate), and macro-synthetic fiber dosages (0% to 1% by total volume). The fresh properties were evaluated through slump tests, while hardened properties including compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and flexural strength were systematically assessed. Results demonstrated that fly ash substitution up to 25% improved the interfacial bonding between rubber particles, fibers, and the cementitious matrix, leading to enhanced tensile and flexural performance without significantly compromising compressive strength. However, at 50% replacement, strength reductions were more pronounced due to slower pozzolanic reactions and reduced cement content. The inclusion of MSF effectively mitigated strength loss induced by rubber aggregates, improving post-cracking behavior and toughness. Overall, an optimal balance was achieved at 25% fly ash replacement combined with 10% rubber and 0.5% fiber content, producing a more sustainable composite with favorable mechanical properties while reducing carbon and ecological footprints. These findings highlight the potential of integrating industrial by-products and waste materials to develop eco-friendly, high-performance FRRC for structural applications, supporting circular economy principles and reducing the carbon footprint of concrete infrastructure. To address the growing demand for sustainable materials in advanced manufacturing, the objective of this study was to develop and characterize a novel 3D-printable biocomposite using ruminant-digested corn stover (DCS) as a reinforcement for polylactic acid (PLA). The methodology involved systematically optimizing DCS particle size (80–140 mesh) and loading concentration (5–20 wt.%), followed by fabricating composite filaments via melt extrusion and 3D printing test specimens. The resulting materials were comprehensively characterized for their morphological, physical, and mechanical properties. The optimal formulation, achieved with 120-mesh particles at 15 wt.% loading, exhibited a 15.6% increase in tensile strength to 64.17 MPa and a 21.1% enhancement in flexural modulus to 4.19 GPa compared to neat PLA. In addition to the mechanical improvements, the biocomposite offers an advantageous density reduction, enabling the fabrication of lightweight structures for resource-efficient applications. Comprehensive characterization revealed effective interfacial integration and uniform fiber dispersion, validating biological preprocessing as a viable method for unlocking the reinforcement potential of this abundant biomass. While the composite exhibits characteristic trade-offs, such as reduced impact strength, the overall performance profile makes it a promising candidate for structural applications in sustainable manufacturing. This research establishes a viable pathway for agricultural waste valorization, demonstrating that biological preprocessing can convert agricultural residues into value-added engineering materials for the circular bioeconomy. Bio-based polyurethane asphalt binder (PUAB) derived from castor oil (CO) is environmentally friendly and exhibits extended allowable construction time. However, CO imparts inherently poor mechanical performance to bio-based PUAB. To address this limitation, attapulgite (ATT) with fibrous nanostructures was incorporated. The effects of ATT on bio-based PUAB were systematically investigated, including cure kinetics, rotational viscosity (RV) evolution, phase-separation microstructures, dynamic mechanical properties, thermal stability, and mechanical performance. Experimental characterization employed Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Brookfield viscometry, laser scanning confocal microscopy, dynamic mechanical analysis, thermogravimetry, and tensile testing. ATT incorporation accelerated the polyaddition reaction conversion between isocyanate groups in polyurethane (PU) and hydroxyl groups in ATT. Paradoxically, it reduced RV during curing, prolonging allowable construction time proportionally with clay content. Additionally, ATT’s compatibilizing effect decreased bitumen particle size in PUAB, with scaling proportionally with clay loading. While enhancing thermal stability, ATT lowered the glass transition temperature and damping properties. Crucially, 1 wt% ATT increased tensile strength by 71% and toughness by 62%, while maintaining high elongation at break (>400%). The cost-effectiveness and significant reinforcement capability of ATT make it a promising candidate for producing high-performance bio-based PUAB composites. Full article

Aluminum chloride hydroxide served as the alumina precursor, while amorphous silica, obtained from rice husk, was directly incorporated into the alumina sol. Following synthesis, the material was calcined at 1000 °C, yielding an α-cristobalite form of silica and corundum-phase alumina. These hybrid particles were introduced into polymer composites at reinforcement levels of 1 wt.%, 3 wt.%, and 5 wt.%. Mechanical behavior was evaluated through three-point bending tests, Shore D hardness measurements, and controlled-energy impact testing. Among the formulations, the 3 wt.% composite exhibited optimal performance, displaying the highest flexural modulus and strength, along with enhanced impact resistance. Hardness increased with rising particle content. Fractographic analysis revealed that the 3 wt.% loading produced a notably rougher fracture surface, correlating with improved energy absorption. In contrast, the 5 wt.% composite, although harder than the matrix and other composites, exhibited diminished toughness due to particle agglomeration. Full article

Biodegradable polymer composites offer promising alternatives to petroleum-based plastics, supporting the principles of a zero waste and circular economy. This study investigates the reinforcing potential of alkali-treated wood flour derived from recycled pine (Pinus brutia Ten.) and poplar (Populus alba L.) waste wooden pallets in poly(lactic acid) (PLA) biocomposites. Wood flour was initially recovered through grinding and screening during recycling, followed by alkali treatment via a green chemistry approach to enhance interfacial bonding with the PLA matrix. The impact of alkali concentration and two fabrication methods—additive manufacturing (AM) and injection molding (IM)—on the properties of developed biocomposite materials was assessed through mechanical, physical, morphological, and thermal analyses. IM samples outperformed AM counterparts, with the IM PLA containing 30 wt% wood flour (alkali-treated with 10% solution) showing the highest mechanical gains: tensile (+71.35%), flexural (+64.74%), and hardness (+2.62%) compared to untreated samples. Moreover, the AM sample with 10 wt% wood flour and 10% alkali treatment showed a 49.37% decrease in water absorption compared to the untreated sample, indicating improved hydrophobicity. Scanning electron microscopy confirmed that alkali treatment reduced void content and enhanced morphological uniformity, while thermal properties remained consistent across fabrication methods. This work introduces a green composite using non-toxic materials and treatments, facilitating eco-friendly production aligned with zero waste and circular economy principles throughout the manufacturing lifecycle. In this work, the development of Al-based metal matrix composites (MMCs) is achieved using hybrid SiC and ZrO2 reinforcement particles for automotive applications. Powder metallurgy (PM) is employed with various combinations of important process parameters for the fabrication of MMCs. MMCs were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and a microhardness study. All XRD graphs adequately exhibit Al, SiC, and ZrO2 peaks, indicating that the hybrid MMC products were satisfactorily fabricated with appropriate mixing and sintering at all the considered fabrication conditions. Also, no impurity peaks were observed, confirming high composite purity. MMC products in all the XRD patterns, suitable for the desired applications. According to the SEM investigation, SiC and ZrO2 reinforcement components are uniformly scattered throughout Al matrix in all produced MMC products. The occurrence of Al, Si, C, Zr, and O in EDS spectra demonstrates the effectiveness of composite ball milling and sintering under all manufacturing conditions. Moreover, an increase in interfacial bonding of fabricated composites at a higher sintering temperature indicated improved physical properties of the developed MMCs. The highest microhardness value is 86.6 HVN amid all the fabricated composites at 7% silica, 14% zirconium dioxide, 500° sintering temperature, 90 min sintering time, and 60 min milling time. An integrated Particle Swarm Optimization–Support Vector Machine (PSO-SVM) model was developed to predict microhardness based on the input parameters. The model demonstrated strong predictive performance, as evidenced by low values of various statistical metrics for both training and testing datasets, highlighting the PSO-SVM model’s robustness and generalization capability. Specifically, the model achieved a coefficient of determination of 0.995 and a root mean square error of 0.920 on the training set, while on the testing set, it attained a coefficient of determination of 0.982 and a root mean square error of 1.557. These results underscore the potential of the PSO-SVM framework, which can be effectively leveraged to optimize process parameters for achieving targeted microhardness levels for the developed Al-SiC-ZrO2 Composites. Buckypapers in Polymer-Based Nanocomposites: A Pathway to Superior Thermal Stability

The thermal stability of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) materials is constrained by the low thermal conductivity of its polymer matrix, resulting in inefficient heat dissipation, local overheating, and accelerated degradation during thermal loads. To overcome these limitations, composite materials can be modified with buckypapers—thin, densely interconnected layers of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). In this study, sixteen 8552/IM7 prepreg plies were processed with up to nine buckypapers and strategically placed at various positions. The resulting nanocomposites were evaluated for manufacturability, material properties, and thermal resistance. The findings reveal that prepreg plies provide only limited matrix material for buckypaper infiltration. Nonetheless, up to five buckypapers, corresponding to 8 wt.% CNTs, can be incorporated into the material without inducing matrix depletion defects. This integration significantly enhances the material’s thermal properties while maintaining its mechanical integrity. The nanotubes embedded in the matrix achieve an effective thermal conductivity of up to 7 W/(m·K) based on theoretical modeling. As a result, under one-sided thermal irradiation at 50 kW/m2, thermo-induced damage and strength loss can be delayed by up to 20%. Therefore, thermal resistance is primarily determined by the nanotube concentration, whereas the arrangement of the buckypapers affects the material quality. Since this innovative approach enables the targeted integration of high particle fractions, it offers substantial potential for improving the safety and reliability of CFRP under thermal stress.
