Invasive species are a recurring global problem, and the water hyacinth (Pontederia crassipes) is a well-known example. Various strategies have been explored to manage its spread, including its use as an agricultural amendment. However, when P. crassipes biomass is incorporated into soil and undergoes degradation, it may increase soil conductivity and promote metal leaching, potentially affecting soil biota, particularly microbiota. Saprophytic fungi play a key role in the decomposition and renewal of organic matter, and their resilience to stressors is crucial for maintaining soil function. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of P. crassipes biomass extracts on the saprophytic fungus Trametes versicolor by evaluating fungal growth and metabolic changes [including sugar content, phosphatase enzymatic activity, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production]. The fungus was exposed for 8 days to a dilution series of extracts (100%—undiluted, to 3.13%) prepared from P. crassipes biomass collected at five locations in Portuguese wetlands. Two sites were in the south, within a Mediterranean climate (Sorraia and Estação Experimental António Teixeira), and three were in the north, within an Atlantic climate (São João de Loure, Pateira de Fermentelos, and Vila Valente), representing both agricultural-runoff–impacted areas and recreational zones. Extracts were used to simulate a worst-case scenario. All extracts have shown high conductivity (≥15.4 mS/cm), and several elements have shown a high soluble fraction (e.g., K, P, As, or Ba), indicating substantial leaching from the biomass to the extracts. Despite this, T. versicolor growth rates were generally not inhibited, except for exposure to the São João de Loure extract, where an EC50 of 45.3% (extract dilution) was determined and a significant sugar content decrease was observed at extract concentrations ≥25%. Possibly due to the high phosphorous leachability, both acid and alkaline phosphatase activities increased significantly at the highest percentages tested (50% and 100%). Furthermore, ROS levels increased with increasing extract concentrations, yet marginal changes were observed in growth rates, suggesting that T. versicolor may efficiently regulate its intracellular redox balance under stress conditions. Overall, these findings indicate that the degradation of P. crassipes biomass in soils, while altering chemical properties and releasing soluble elements, may not impair and could even boost microbiota, namely saprophytic fungi. This resilience highlights the potential ecological benefit of saprophytic fungi in accelerating the decomposition of invasive plant residues and contribution to soil nutrient cycling and ecosystem recovery. This study introduces a new integral operator Ip,μδ that extends the traditional Rafid operator to meromorphic p-valent functions. Using this operator, we define and investigate two new subclasses: Σp+δ,μ,α, consisting of functions with nonnegative coefficients, and Σp+δ,μ,α,c, which further fixes the second positive coefficient. For these classes, we establish a necessary and sufficient coefficient condition, which serves as the foundation for deriving a set of sharp results. These include accurate coefficient bounds, distortion theorems for functions and derivatives, and radii of starlikeness and convexity of a specific order. Furthermore, we demonstrate the closure property of the class Σp+δ,μ,α,c, identify its extreme points, and then construct a neighborhood theorem. All the findings presented in this paper are sharp. To demonstrate the practical utility of our symmetric operator paradigm, we apply it to a canonical fractional electrodynamics problem. We demonstrate how sharp distortion theorems establish rigorous, time-invariant upper bounds for a solitary electrostatic potential and its accompanying electric field, resulting in a mathematically guaranteed safety buffer against dielectric breakdown. This study develops a symmetric and consistent approach to investigating the geometric characteristics of meromorphic multivalent functions and their applications in physical models. Full article

In this paper, we derive novel results concerning third-order differential subordinations for meromorphic functions, utilizing a newly defined linear operator that involves the inverse of the Legendre chi function in conjunction with the Mittag-Leffler identity. To establish these results, we introduce several families of admissible functions tailored to this operator and formulate sufficient conditions under which the subordinations hold. Our study presents three fundamental theorems that extend and generalize known results in the literature. Each theorem is accompanied by rigorous proofs and further supported by corollaries and illustrative examples that validate the applicability and sharpness of the derived results. In particular, we highlight special cases and discuss their implications through both analytical evaluations and graphical interpretations, demonstrating the strength and flexibility of our framework. This work contributes meaningfully to the field of geometric function theory by offering new insights into the behavior of third-order differential operators acting on p-valent meromorphic functions. Furthermore, the involvement of the Mittag-Leffler function positions the results within the broader context of fractional calculus, suggesting potential for applications in the mathematical modeling of complex and nonlinear phenomena. We hope this study stimulates further research in related domains. Full article

In order to develop an efficient, environmentally friendly heavy metal ions adsorbent, the amino-modified expanded vermiculite-supported nano zero-valent iron (nZVI@PEI/EVMT) was prepared by using polyethyleneimine (PEI) as the functional reagent and expanded vermiculite (EVMT) as the carrier. The characterization results of nZVI@PEI/EVMT confirm that the PEI modification did not destroy the crystal configuration of EVMT, and when nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) was successfully loaded onto the PEI/EVMT surface, the value of saturation magnetic field was 41.5 emu/g, which could be separated from solution with magnet. The performance of Cr(VI) adsorption onto nZVI@PEI/EVMT was studied, showing that the ideal mass ratio for nZVI@PEI/EVMT was 1:1, and the removal capacity was largest when solution pH was 2. After four adsorption–desorption cycles, the adsorption amounts remained 40.1 mg/g. The Cr(VI) adsorption onto nZVI@PEI/EVMT was more consistent with a pseudo-second-order kinetics equation. Isotherm adsorption data accord with the Langmuir model, which suggests that the adsorption was the monolayer, the maximum adsorption amount was 116.2 mg/g at 30 °C and pH 2, and the adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic. It was inferred that the adsorption mechanisms included electrostatic attraction, reduction, chemical complexation, and co-precipitation. Full article

Interest in the combination of ferrates and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for wastewater treatment has increased, as revealed in this systematic review. In this study, the multiple functions of Fe(VI) in ferrate-based AOPs are summarized based on the Fe species. Various enhanced oxidation pathways are achieved through electron capture by Fe(VI), oxidation by Fe(V) and Fe(IV), or the catalytic effects of Fe(III) and Fe(II). The different contributions of high-valent Fe species and general reactive oxidation species are highlighted by analyzing the results of quenching, methyl phenyl sulfoxide probing, and electron paramagnetic resonance analysis. Methods that are used to adjust the Fe species, including changing the reaction pH, oxidant dosage, dosing pattern, and the addition of reducing or complexing additives, can influence the enhancement efficiency of micropollutant treatment from the perspective of determining the transformation from Fe(VI) to Fe(V) and Fe(IV) with higher reactivity or Fe(III) and Fe(II) circulation. Future studies should focus on the in situ production of high-valent Fe and oxidation pathway-based adjustments in Fe(VI)-AOP techniques. Full article

A stabilized biochar (BC)–nano-scale zero-valent iron (nZVI) composite (BC-nZVI@Cell-g-PAA) was prepared using cellulose-grafted polyacrylic acid (Cell-g-PAA) as the raw material through in situ polymerization and liquid-phase reduction methods for the remediation of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI))-contaminated water. BC-nZVI@Cell-g-PAA was characterized by XRD, FT-IR, SEM, BET, TEM, and XPS. According to the batch experiments, under optimized conditions (Cr(VI) concentration of 50 mg/L, pH = 3, and dosage of 2 g/L), the BC-nZVI@Cell-g-PAA composite achieved maximum Cr(VI) removal efficiency (99.69%) within 120 min. Notably, BC, as a carrier, achieved a high dispersion of nZVI through its porous structure, effectively preventing particle agglomeration and improving reaction activity. Simultaneously, the functional groups on the surface of Cell-g-PAA provided excellent protection for nZVI, significantly suppressing its oxidative deactivation. Furthermore, the composite effectively reduced Cr(VI) to insoluble trivalent chromium(Cr(III)) species and stabilized them on its surface through immobilization. The synergistic effects of physical adsorption and chemical reduction greatly contributed to the removal efficiency of Cr(VI). Remarkably, the composite exhibited excellent reusability with a removal efficiency of 62.4% after five cycles, demonstrating its potential as a promising material for remediating Cr(VI)-contaminated water. In conclusion, the BC-nZVI@Cell-g-PAA composite not only demonstrated remarkable efficiency in Cr(VI) removal but also showcased its potential for practical applications in environmental remediation, as evidenced by its sustained performance over multiple reuse cycles. Moreover, Cr(VI), a toxic and carcinogenic substance, poses significant risks to aquatic ecosystems and human health, underscoring the importance of developing effective methods for its removal from contaminated water. The present article aims to significantly improve geometric function theory by making an important contribution to p-valent meromorphic and analytic functions. It focuses on subordination, which describes the relationships of analytic functions. In order to achieve this, we utilize a technique that is based on the properties of differential subordination. This approach, which is one of the most recent developments in this field, may obtain a number of conclusions about differential subordination for p-valent meromorphic functions described by the new operator IHp,q,s j,pν1,n,α,lJ(ζ)  within the porous unit disk Δ. Numerous mathematical and practical issues involving orthogonal polynomials, such as system identification, signal processing, fluid dynamics, antenna technology, and approximation theory, can benefit from the results presented in this article. The knowledge and comprehension of the unit’s analytical functions and its interacting higher relations are also greatly expanded by this text. Full article

One of the most widely employed methods for adsorption is the utilization of biochar produced during pyrolysis. Biochar has attracted considerable attention due to its oxygen-containing functional groups and relatively high specific surface area. In alignment with the principles of cleaner production, the sludge generated from sewage treatment plants is typically classified as waste. However, it can be effectively repurposed as an adsorbent following pyrolysis and subsequent nanoparticle modification. This environmentally friendly approach presents an ecological alternative to conventional water treatment methods. The objective of this study is to evaluate the efficiency of batch adsorption for the removal of phosphate from wastewater using both unmodified and modified sewage sludge biochars (SSBs) that were produced at various temperatures (300 °C, 400 °C, 500 °C, and 600 °C) and modified with zero-valent iron nanoparticles (nZVI-SSB300, nZVI-SSB400, nZVI-SSB500, and nZVI-SSB600). The findings indicate that biochar modified with functional nanoparticles is a highly effective adsorbent for the removal of phosphate from wastewater. As demonstrated by the research results, the adsorption capacity of modified biochar is approximately 3 to 3.5 times greater than that of the unmodified variants. The phosphate removal efficiency with modified biochars was optimal with nZVI-SSB600. In experiments with a phosphate concentration (25 mg/L), the modified sorbent biochar exhibited an equilibrium adsorption capacity of 23.74 mg/g, translating to a phosphate removal efficiency of 60%. Under similar test conditions, at an initial phosphate concentration of 50 mg/L, the adsorption capacity improved to 25.67 mg/g (75% efficiency); at 75 mg/L, it reached 27.97 mg/g (80%); at 100 mg/L, it was 28.44 mg/g (85%); and at 125 mg/L, it achieved 29.48 mg/g (89%). The models confirmed the observed adsorption behavior, yielding a maximum phosphate adsorption capacity (qe) of 19.00 mg/g for the 600 °C pyrolysis of modified biochar at the primary phosphate concentration (25 mg/L). Furthermore, this study indicates that the influence of solution pH on phosphate adsorption remains stable and maximal (nZVI-SSB600, ranging from 16.87 to 20.46 mg/g) within the pH range of 3 to 8. On average, the modified biochar (nZVI-SSB) demonstrated 20 to 30% superior adsorption performance compared to the unmodified biochar (SSB). Additionally, significant differences were noted between various ambient temperatures, ranging from 5 °C to 25 °C. As the ambient temperature increased, the sorption capacity of the adsorbent exhibited a considerable improvement. With a primary concentration of phosphate (100 mg/g) at 5 °C, the adsorption capacity of nZVI-SSB600 was measured at 7.99 mg/g; this increased to 14.33 mg/g at 10 °C, 21.79 mg/g at 20 °C, and 28.44 mg/g at 25 °C. This research highlights the potential application of biochar in wastewater treatment for phosphate removal, simultaneously enabling the effective utilization of generated sewage sludge waste through pyrolysis and coating with zero-iron nanoparticles, resulting in a sustainable solution. Phosphorus deficiency critically constrains crop growth. Soil microbial diversity, which is crucial for maintaining terrestrial ecosystem integrity, plays a key role in promoting soil P cycling. Therefore, it is imperative to understand the survival strategies of microorganisms under P-limited conditions and explore their roles in community regulation. We initiated a comprehensive, long-term, in situ wheat field experiment to measure soil physicochemical properties, focusing on the different forms of soil inorganic P. Subsequently, 16S rRNA and ITS marker sequencing was employed to study changes in soil microbial abundance and community structure and predict functional alterations. The results showed that soil water and P deficiencies significantly affected wheat growth and development, soil physicochemical properties, and microbial diversity and function. Prolonged P deficiency lowered soil pH, significantly increasing phosphatase content (58%) under W1 (normal irrigation) conditions. Divalent calcium phosphate decreased significantly under W0 (lack of irrigation) and W1 conditions, and the most stable ten-valent calcium phosphate began to transform under W0 conditions. Soil microbial diversity increased (e.g., Proteobacteria and Vicinamibacterales) and enhanced the transport capacity of bacteria. P deficiency affected the coexistence networks between bacteria and fungi, and SEM (structural equation modeling) analysis revealed a stronger correlation in bacteria (r2 = 0.234) than in fungi (r2 = 0.172). In soils deprived of P for 7 years, the soil P content and forms were coupled with microbial changes. Microorganisms exhibited community and functional changes in response to low-phosphorus soil, concurrently influencing soil P status. This study enhances our understanding of rhizospheric processes in soil P cycling under microbial feedback, particularly the impact of microbial interactions on changes in soil P forms under P-limited conditions. This study is concerned with the class of p-valent meromorphic functions, represented by the series f(ζ)=ζp+k=1pdkζk, with the domain characterized by 0<|ζ|<1. We apply an Erdelyi–Kober-type integral operator to derive two recurrence relations. From this, we draw specific conclusions on differential subordination and differential superordination. By looking into suitable classes of permitted functions, we obtain various outcomes, including results analogous to sandwich-type theorems. The operator used can provide generalizations of previous operators through specific parameter choices, thus providing more corollaries. Full article
