Barn districts—ensembles of agricultural buildings situated at the edges of rural settlements—once played a key role in the spatial and economic organization of agrarian communities in Central Europe. Today, many of these structures remain marginalized and underexplored in contemporary landscape and heritage planning. This paper presents a comparative study of six barn districts in Poland’s Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, where vernacular construction, ecological adaptation, and local tradition shaped distinctive rural–urban interfaces. We applied a mixed-methods approach combining cartographic and archival analysis, field surveys, and interviews with residents and experts. The research reveals consistent patterns of landscape transformation, functional decline, and latent adaptive potential across varied morphological and material typologies. Despite differing levels of preservation, barn districts retain symbolic, spatial, and socio-cultural value for communities and local landscapes. The study emphasizes the importance of reintegrating these marginal heritage structures through adaptive reuse strategies rooted in the values of the New European Bauhaus—sustainability, aesthetics, and inclusion. The findings contribute to broader discussions on rural socio-ecological resilience and landscape-based development, highlighting how place-based strategies can bridge past identities with future-oriented spatial planning. Background: Midwifery’s Intangible Heritage was officially recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization on 6 December 2023, highlighting that elements of midwifery knowledge and practice, shaped over generations, constitute cultural heritage worth safeguarding. While previous studies have investigated midwives’ perceptions of professional identity, none have done so within the explicit framework of MIH. Objective: this study explored how midwives and student midwives in Cyprus perceive the intangible heritage of their profession and how it relates to their shared professional identity. Methods: A qualitative descriptive study was conducted between April and July 2023. Three focus groups were held, involving 22 participants: 15 registered midwives and 7 student midwives. A semi-structured interview guide consisting of 10 questions was used, developed by the lead author (M.P.) based on the literature and improvisation and finalized with the research team (E.H., S.V., N.M.) after expert input. Thematic analysis was performed inductively to identify recurrent themes. Results: Four major themes emerged: (1) key elements of Midwifery’s Intangible Heritage and their transmission across generations; (2) a sense of shared professional identity; (3) perceived threats to the midwifery profession; and (4) midwives’ expectations for the future of the profession. Conclusions: The findings reflect the historical background of midwifery in Cyprus and its contrast with contemporary practice, particularly within the context of the overmedicalization of birth and societal perceptions of midwifery in the socio-cultural setting. Safeguarding Midwifery’s Intangible Heritage requires both empowering women to seek midwifery-led care and enabling midwives to practice autonomously within their full professional scope. In addition, policymakers and educational bodies must support the preservation of midwives’ core skills through targeted educational curricula, structured mentorship, and continuous professional development. Serious games (SGs) have been widely employed in the digital preservation and transmission of architectural heritage. However, the key determinants and underlying mechanisms driving users’ continuance intentions toward ancient-architecture cultural heritage serious games (CH-SGs) have not been thoroughly investigated. Accordingly, a conceptual model grounded in the stimulus–organism–response (S–O–R) framework was developed to elucidate the affective and behavioral effects experienced by CH-SG users. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) and artificial neural networks (ANNs) were employed to capture both the linear and nonlinear relationships among model constructs. By integrating sufficiency logic (PLS-SEM) and necessity logic (necessary condition analysis, NCA), “must-have” and “should-have” factors were identified. Empirical results indicate that cultural authenticity, knowledge acquisition, perceived enjoyment, and design aesthetics each exert a positive influence—of varying magnitude—on perceived value, cultural identification, and perceived pleasure, thereby shaping users’ continuance intentions. Moreover, cultural authenticity and perceived enjoyment were found to be necessary and sufficient conditions, respectively, for enhancing perceived pleasure and perceived value, which in turn indirectly bolster CH-SG users’ sustained use intentions. By creating an immersive, narratively rich, and engaging cognitive experience, CH-SGs set against ancient architectural backdrops not only stimulate users’ willingness to visit and protect heritage sites but also provide designers and developers with critical insights for optimizing future CH-SG design, development, and dissemination. This research aims to determine the utilization levels of local products and the challenges and opportunities of creating a recognizable food-centered cultural identity based on collaborative networks developed between agriculture and tourism. This has the potential to strengthen collaborative entrepreneurship. It uniquely contributes to the existing literature by exploring the connections between agri-food and tourism, while proposing strategies to maximize business opportunities centered on food culture. Descriptive and inferential statistics are conducted based on primary data collected by distributing a questionnaire to 59 public and private organizations in the Peloponnese region in Greece, which has significant agricultural production but limited tourist flows. The results indicate a lack of collective action and business recognition of the value of regional food culture among participants. The human resources employed in tourism lack the skills to highlight traditional food heritage. The presence of structural and operational barriers undermines efforts to facilitate communication, manage suppliers, and enhance the visibility of products designated with Geographical Indications. This paper offers preliminary results; however, extensive future studies are needed to validate the findings fully. The study highlights key implications: Improved communication between stakeholders could enhance the management of the local food network. Agri-food and tourism businesses can develop educational programs and food-focused tourism packages that promote social cohesion and preserve cultural heritage. Full article

Currently, exploring digital immersive experiences is a new trend in the innovation and development of cultural tourism. This study addresses the growing demand for digital immersion in cultural tourism by examining the integration of spatial narrative and digitally gamified architectural scenarios. This study synthesizes an optimized framework for narrative design in digitally gamified architectural scenarios, integrating spatial narrative theory and feedback-informed design. The proposed model comprises four key components: (1) developing spatial narrative design methods for such scenarios; (2) constructing a spatial language system for spatial narratives using linguistic principles to organize narrative expression; (3) building a preliminary digitally gamified scenario based on the “Wuhu Jiaoji Temple Renovation Project” after architectural and environmental enhancements; and (4) optimization through thermal feedback experiments—collecting visitor trajectory heatmaps, eye-tracking heatmaps, and oculometric data. The results show that the optimized design, validated in the original game Dreams of Jiaoji, effectively enhanced spatial narrative execution by refining both on-site and in-game architectural scenarios. Post-optimization visitor feedback confirmed the validity of the proposed optimization strategies and principles, providing theoretical and practical references for innovative digital cultural tourism models and architectural design advancements. In the context of site-specific architectural conservation, this approach achieves two key objectives: the generalized interpretation of architectural cultural resources and their visual representation through gamified interactions. This paradigm not only enhances public engagement through enabling a multidimensional understanding of historical building cultures but also accelerates the protective reuse of heritage sites, allowing heritage value to be maximized through contemporary reinterpretation. The interdisciplinary methodology promotes sustainable development in the digital transformation of cultural tourism, fostering user-centered experiences and contributing to rural revitalization. Ultimately, this study highlights the potential use of digitally gamified architectural scenarios as transformative tools for heritage preservation, cultural dissemination, and rural community revitalization. Microbial Dynamics in a Musalais Wine Fermentation: A Metagenomic Study

This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the microbial dynamics involved in the fermentation process of traditional Musalais wine, an intangible cultural heritage of Xinjiang. Utilizing metagenomic sequencing, we identified 2894 microbial species, of which 494 persisted throughout the fermentation process. Saccharomyces cerevisiae was the dominant species, with its prevalence increasing from 97.35% in the early phase to 99.38% in the mid phase, before slightly decreasing to 98.79% in the late phase. Additionally, 24 non-Saccharomyces yeast species, including Hanseniaspora uvarum, Lachancea thermotolerans, and Torulaspora delbrueckii, were detected. Common species associated with other fermented foods, including Wickerhamomyces anomalus, Kluyveromyces marxianus, Saccharomyces eubayanus, and Zygosaccharomyces parabailii, were also identified. Notably, species not previously used in food fermentation, such as Saccharomyces jurei, Sodiomyces alkalinus, Vanrija pseudolonga, and Moesziomyces antarcticus, were also identified in this study. Furthermore, the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KO) and Gene Ontology (GO) revealed notable variations in metabolic pathways and enriched functional genes. In addition, a total of 82 volatile compounds were detected in the final product, with higher alcohols (60.12%), esters (37.80%), and organic acids (1.80%) being the most prevalent. These results offer important insights into microbial interactions and their influence on Musalais wine quality, laying the groundwork for optimizing the fermentation process. Full article

Aminotris(methylene phosphonic acid) (ATMP) and poly(acrylic acid) sodium salt (PAA) have shown favorable results in the treatment of porous building materials against weathering damage, showing promising potential as mixed-in additives during the production of lime-based mortars. This study investigates the impact of these additives on microstructure and mechanical properties. Additives were introduced in various concentrations to assess their influence on CaCO3 crystallization, porosity, strength, and carbonation behavior. Results revealed significant modifications in the morphology of CaCO3 precipitates, showing evidence of nanostructured CaCO3 aggregates and vaterite stabilization, thus indicating a non-classical crystallization pathway through the formation of amorphous CaCO3 phase(s), facilitated by organic occlusions. These nanostructural changes, resembling biomimetic calcitic precipitates enhanced mechanical performance by enabling plastic deformation and intergranular bridging. Increased porosity and pore connectivity facilitated CO2 diffusion towards the mortar matrix, contributing to strength development over time. However, high additive concentrations resulted in poor mechanical performance due to the excessive air entrainment capabilities of short-length polymers. Overall, this study demonstrates that the optimized dosages of ATMP and PAA can significantly enhance the durability and mechanical performance of lime-based mortars and suggests a promising alternative for the tailored manufacturing of highly compatible and durable materials for both the restoration of cultural heritage and modern sustainable construction. This paper presents the ReInHerit Toolkit, a collection of open-source interactive applications developed as part of the H2020 ReInHerit project. Informed by extensive surveys and focus groups with cultural professionals across Europe, the toolkit addresses key needs in the heritage sector by leveraging computer vision and artificial intelligence to enrich museum experiences through engaging, personalized interactions that enhance visitor learning. Designed to bridge the technology gap between larger institutions and smaller organizations, the ReInHerit Toolkit also promotes a sustainable, people-centered approach to digital innovation, supported by shared resources, training, and collaborative development opportunities accessible through the project’s Digital Hub. Historic districts of ancient towns serve as significant carriers of historical and cultural heritage while also being popular tourist destinations. Within the context of urbanization and organic renewal, the protection and development of historic districts have become crucial research topics. This study collects literature from the Web of Science database and applies manual screening to ensure relevance to the research theme. Using CiteSpace as an analytical tool, the study conducts a visual analysis from multiple perspectives, including keywords, writing time, authors, centrality, keyword clustering analysis, and timeline visualization. By constructing a knowledge graph, this research explores the key pathways and knowledge nodes in the organic renewal of spatial environments in historic districts of ancient towns. Based on literature clustering, the study categorizes research into four major aspects: heritage conservation, cultural and tourism development, spatial planning and design, and environmental enhancement. Based on this, universal strategies for the cultural and tourism development of historic districts in ancient towns are proposed. The research focus shifts from emphasizing cultural heritage preservation to the integrated development of culture and tourism. In the spatial development of historic districts, everyday life scenes should be incorporated while new technologies should be utilized to enhance environmental comfort. This paper summarizes the current research frontiers in this field and proposes future research trends, providing valuable references for scholars in related areas. Full article

Natural colorants, with their sustainable origins, offer a promising alternative for various applications. Advanced studies have unveiled the remarkable properties, resilience, and durability of these ancient dyes, which our ancestors developed through sustainable material processing. This serves as a testament to the potential of sustainable solutions in our field. As part of our research, we prepared three medieval temperas using gum arabic, parchment glue, and casein glue. These tempera were explicitly designed to protect the purples obtained from Chrozophora tinctoria extracts. A comprehensive multi-analytical approach guides our research on natural colorants. Central to this approach is the use of molecular fluorescence by microspectrofluorimetry, a key tool in our study. By analyzing the emission and excitation spectra in the visible range, we can identify specific formulations. This method is further supported by fingerprinting techniques, including Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography with Diode Array Detection (HPLC-DAD). These are further complemented by Fiber Optics Reflectance Spectroscopy (FORS) and colorimetry. Building on our understanding of orcein purples, we have extended our research to purples derived from Chrozophora tinctoria extracts. Our findings reveal the unique properties of Chrozophora tinctoria, which can be accurately distinguished from orcein purples, highlighting the distinctiveness of each. Full article

The European Charter for Wine Tourism (2005) promotes the sustainable development of tourism activities associated with viticulture. The document identifies the active role that wine-growing territories must play in the conservation, management, and valorization of their resources. This study aims to understand the degree of linkage that this Charter establishes with initiatives for the heritage of wine culture, specifically focusing on wine museums in Spain. It examines how these museums contribute to defining a tourism development program, constructing a common strategic vision, and encouraging cooperation between the social and economic agents involved in the territory. As case studies, the Vivanco Museum of Wine Culture (La Rioja), considered by World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) as the best in the world, and the Valdepeñas Wine Museum (Castilla-La Mancha), an example of rehabilitation and musealization in the region with the highest concentration of vineyards in the world, have been chosen. The results show that both museums exemplify management, development, and cooperation in their respective territories, aligning with the theoretical assumptions established in the Charter. Subfossil trees in growth position and their associated organic sediments serve as valuable archives of past ecologies, shedding light on coastal forest responses to post-Glacial sea-level rise. This paper offers an overview of the significance of drowned forests as both ecological and cultural records, with particular emphasis on Australian Indigenous connections to these landscapes. Indigenous use of and cultural connections to coastal trees and forests in Australian contexts are outlined, along with an overview of the formation and preservation processes of submerged forests and the methodological approaches used to study them. Case studies from across Australia illustrate the diversity of these records and their relevance to both science and heritage. The paper highlights the need for a regional database of subfossil trees and peats and underscores the importance of integrating Indigenous and scientific knowledge systems to deepen our understanding of environmental and cultural change. Scientific evaluation of architectural heritage value constitutes a crucial foundation for advancing effective conservation practices and guiding policy development. Fujian Tubao, a distinctive form of defensive vernacular architecture found in southeastern China, integrates military defense, residential functions, and clan-based social organization into a unified spatial structure, making it an important component of China’s regional cultural heritage. In response to current challenges of inadequate preservation and progressive loss of heritage value associated with Fujian Tubao, there is an urgent need to establish a systematic evaluation framework to support and inform conservation efforts. This study centered on Fujian Tubao and proposed a comprehensive value assessment system that could innovatively integrate Grounded Theory with the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). The Grounded Theory was first adopted to extract value dimensions of architectural heritage and their underlying connotations, thereby forming a value cognition system. Subsequently, the AHP was applied to assign quantitative weights and establish the priority order of each dimension, ultimately constructing a value evaluation system that could identify core objects for heritage conservation and clarify the hierarchy of their relative importance. This study achieved methodological integration in both the value extraction and evaluation stages, overcoming limitations of a single-method approach in dimension identification and weight assignment. The framework ensures logical consistency in value structuring and enhances the scientific validity of results. This study formulated a standardized and replicable evaluation framework tailored to the heritage value of Fujian Tubao. Cultural and ecological heritage is often an essential ingredient for sustainable urban and regional regeneration and needs to be properly managed for an environment-benign development. Many heritage-led areas in Europe, named here ‘cultural-ecological complexes’ (CECs), seek a sustainable, regenerative, and actionable strategy. Our study aims to identify successful CECs from the viewpoint of their transformative cultural potential, assessed through surveys among visitors and residents. The research focuses on the assessment of seven Cultural-Ecological Complexes (CECs) in Europe: Karlsborg (Sweden), Mark (Sweden), Larnaca (Cyprus), Basilicata (Italy), Huesca (Spain), Vojvodina (Serbia), and Sibiu (Romania/Moldova). The European areas under study are selected on the basis of their transformative cultural tourism profile and potential, with the aim of tracing a balanced, sustainable development and a positive regenerative or circular transition. Each CEC was analyzed based on its transformative cultural potential and sustainability impact using multivariate Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). Each region under consideration comprises a set of ‘information agents’, in particular visitors and residents, who may be regarded as informal stakeholders providing crucial or decisive information and guidelines on the sustainability situation in the region and on ways to proceed to transformative cultural tourism. This novel approach is essentially a form of citizen-based or agent-based co-creation. In our study, empirical information on the perceptions, preferences, and involvement of such agents was collected through systematically structured and consistently administered surveys among hundreds of participants (visitors, residents, etc.) in seven CECs in Europe. The research methodology is based on a blend of multivariate statistics (in particular, Principal Component Analysis—PCA) and spatial efficiency analysis (using Data Envelopment Analysis—DEA). The agents in each region are conceived of as spatial decision-making units (DMUs) in a DEA framework. Our DEA assessment model contains a multiscalar structure organized in a cascadic and interactive form with two constituents, namely cultural-ecological areas (CECs) and place-based information agents. The findings from this novel Multivariate DEA provide generic directives for an enhancement of the cultural-ecological performance for CECs and offer quantitative information for place-based efficiency-improving strategies of CECs in various contexts. Fungal biodiversity and ethnomycological knowledge are fundamental components of the biocultural identity of communities within the La Malinche National Park (PNM), a region of ecological and cultural significance in Mexico. This study documented the diversity of wild fungi and their uses in San Miguel Canoa, Puebla, through field excursions with local mushroom gatherers, interviews, and qualitative analysis. Key species such as Russula delica, Boletus aff. edulis, and Amanita basii were identified, playing a vital role in local gastronomy with traditional recipes like mole and pipián. Intergenerational knowledge transmission, crucial for identifying edible fungi and avoiding intoxications, highlights the importance of oral tradition. However, deforestation, illegal logging, and land-use change threaten fungal diversity, a problem exacerbated by the lack of effective conservation policies. The discussion highlights the interplay between biodiversity and culture, emphasizing the significance of the Wild Mushroom Fair organized by the Yolaltepetl collective as an effort to disseminate ethnomycological knowledge and promote the conservation of the PNM. Such community-driven initiatives represent a sustainable model that integrates environmental protection with cultural strengthening. The study concludes that protecting the PNM requires a holistic approach, merging ecological conservation with the recognition of biocultural knowledge. This is essential to preserve both biodiversity and cultural heritage, ensuring their sustainability for future generations. Full article
