The limitations of conventional diabetes management are increasingly evident. As a result, both type 1 and 2 diabetes in pediatric populations have become major global health concerns. As new technologies emerge, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), they offer new opportunities to improve diagnostic accuracy, treatment outcomes, and patient self-management. A PRISMA-based systematic review was conducted using PubMed, Web of Science, and BIREME. The research covered studies published up to February 2025, where twenty-two studies met the inclusion criteria. These studies examined machine learning algorithms, continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), closed-loop insulin delivery systems, telemedicine platforms, and digital educational interventions. AI-driven interventions were consistently associated with reductions in HbA1c and extended time in range. Furthermore, they reported earlier detection of complications, personalized insulin dosing, and greater patient autonomy. Predictive models, including digital twins and self-learning neural networks, significantly improved diagnostic accuracy and early risk stratification. Digital health platforms enhanced treatment adherence. Nonetheless, the barriers included unequal access to technology and limited long-term clinical validation. Artificial intelligence is progressively reshaping pediatric diabetes care toward a predictive, preventive, personalized, and participatory paradigm. Broader implementation will require rigorous multiethnic validation and robust ethical frameworks to ensure equitable deployment. Full article

The insect gut microbiome contributes to various host physiological processes and behaviors, such as digestion, nutrient absorption, immunity, mate choice, and fecundity. The social environment can shape gut microbial communities. Mixed-sex vs. female-only rearing is an important social context because it differs in exposure to the opposite sex and mating opportunities, which may in turn affect female physiology that may influence their gut microbiome. Despite the growing recognition of these social-microbial interactions, most studies have relied on 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing or qPCR, which provide only coarse taxonomic resolution and limited functional insight. In this study, we used whole-genome shotgun metagenomics to examine changes in microbial diversity and functional gene composition in the female field cricket Teleogryllus occipitalis (Serville) (Orthoptera: Gryllidae) reared under two social conditions: mixed-sex rearing and female-only rearing. Species richness and diversity analyses revealed that community composition separated between females from mixed-sex and female-only rearing. Functional profiling indicated higher relative abundances of genes annotated to nutrient processing and inter-bacterial competition in females from mixed-sex rearing, whereas females from female-only rearing showed relative enrichment of genes annotated to stress resistance and nitrogen fixation. These findings provide a genome-resolved foundation for testing how social rearing conditions covary with gut microbiome composition and functional potential in female crickets. Full article

Background/Objectives: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide and increasingly are recognized as a continuum of interconnected conditions rather than isolated entities. Methods: A structured narrative literature search was performed in PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar for publications from 2015 to 2025 using combinations of different keywords: “cardiovascular disease spectrum”, “multi-omics”, “precision cardiology”, “machine learning”, and “artificial intelligence in cardiology”. Results: Evidence was synthesized across seven major clusters of cardiovascular conditions, and across these domains, common biological pathways were mapped onto heterogeneous clinical phenotypes, and we summarize how multi-omics integration, AI-enabled imaging and digital tools contribute to improved risk prediction and more informed clinical decision-making within this spectrum. Conclusions: Interpreting cardiovascular conditions as components of a shared disease spectrum clarifies cross-disease interactions and supports a shift from organ- and syndrome-based classifications toward mechanism- and data-driven precision cardiology. The convergence of multi-omics, and AI offers substantial opportunities for earlier detection, individualized prevention, and tailored therapy, but requires careful attention to data quality, equity, interpretability, and practical implementation in routine care. Traditional routing algorithms optimizing for distance or travel time are inadequate for electric vehicles (EVs), which require energy-aware planning considering battery constraints and charging infrastructure. This work presents an energy-optimal routing system for EVs that integrates personalized consumption modeling with real-time environmental data. The system employs a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network to predict State-of-Charge (SoC) consumption from real-world driving data, learning directly from spatiotemporal features including velocity, temperature, road inclination, and traveled distance. Unlike physics-based models requiring difficult-to-obtain parameters, this approach captures nonlinear dependencies and temporal patterns in energy consumption. The routing framework integrates static map data, dynamic traffic conditions, weather information, and charging station locations into a weighted graph representation. Edge costs reflect predicted SoC drops, while node penalties account for traffic congestion and charging opportunities. An enhanced A* algorithm finds optimal routes minimizing energy consumption. Experimental validation on a Nissan Leaf shows that the proposed end-to-end SoC estimator significantly outperforms traditional approaches. The model achieves an RMSE of 36.83 and an R2 of 0.9374, corresponding to a 59.91% reduction in error compared to physics-based formulas. Real-world testing on various routes further confirms its accuracy, with a Mean Absolute Error in the total route SoC estimation of 2%, improving upon the 3.5% observed for commercial solutions. This article critically examines the growing interest in what most contemporary scholars consider still a new and underdeveloped mode of environmental storytelling in video games. Different models of games that provide strong narrative techniques within highly detailed, environmentally sophisticated land/soundscapes have been released over the last decade by well-known studios like Fullbright Productions, Giant Sparrow and Campo Santo. This new perspective will draw several critical questions formed from prior research in several foundational articles, the area of game studies and several journals directed at the question of how game spaces function as narrative devices. For example, an early 2016 article by John Barber for the Cogent Arts and Humanities, “Digital storytelling: New opportunities for humanities scholarship and pedagogy” was one of the first essays to explore how Fullbright’s well-known game Gone Home utilizes spatial design, object placement, and ambient details to convey stories without explicit narration. Gone Home, according to Barber and many others, continues to emphasize environmental storytelling as a form of semiotic communication—one where the “text” is the game world itself, inviting players to read and interpret more complex layers of literary meaning. Contemporary scholars have built on these more foundational studies to consider how AI and procedural generation further complicate narrative agency and structure in digital spaces, enabling the current study to consider what could be considered a distinctly post-AI theoretical perspective based upon these primary determinants: (a) how game environments may dynamically adapt narratives in response to player interaction and algorithmic input, and (b) the evolving notion of narrative agency in digital spaces where human and machine contributions intertwine in AI systems. The two chief aims of this proposal are thus to reconsider traditional environmental storytelling within new innovative, post-GenAI narrative frameworks and, looking at contemporary insights from leading examples in the field, deepen current academic understandings of narrative spaces in games from new narratological perspectives. Studies in this area seem uniquely valuable, given the rapid development of GenAI tools in creative content production and what appears to be a new epoch in narrative engagement in all interactive media. Brown algae of the Cystoseira genus are recognized as valuable sources of bioactive compounds, including polysaccharides. Within the framework of current restoration efforts regarding damaged Ericaria amentacea populations in the Mediterranean Sea, the valorization of apices derived from ex situ cultivation waste represents a sustainable opportunity for industrial and biomedical applications. In this study, sodium alginate (SA) was extracted from E. amentacea apex by-products using a hydrothermal–alkaline method and subsequently chemically characterized. FTIR analysis showed O-H, C-H, and COO- stretching compatible with commercial alginates, while 1H-NMR spectroscopy indicated high β-D-mannuronic acid content, with an M/G ratio of 2.33. The extracted SA displayed a molecular weight of 1 × 104 g/mol and a polydispersity index of 3.5. The bioactive properties of the SA extract were investigated in chemico and in vitro. SA exhibited remarkable antioxidant activity, showing significant DPPH and nitric oxide-radical-scavenging capacity. Furthermore, SA demonstrated a strong anti-inflammatory effect in LPS-stimulated macrophages through modulation of several inflammatory mediators (i.e., IL-6, IL-8/CXCL5, MCP-1, and TNF-α). In particular, SA promoted a striking iNOS gene expression inhibition, which, paired with its direct NO-scavenging ability, paves the way for future pharmacological use of E. amentacea derivatives, particularly if sustainably obtained from restoration activity waste. Efforts to improve efficiency and profitability on dairy farms have renewed focus on how culling practices affect herd sustainability and economic outcomes. This study surveyed decision-makers on 60 high-producing, freestall-housed dairy farms in Wisconsin, with a mean (SD) turnover rate of 36.0 (8.0)%. Using a structured questionnaire, we examined herd management, culling criteria, and motivations. Most farms (93%) used on-farm management systems to guide culling, yet only 48% used designated reports, relying instead on individual cow records. Milk production, infertility, and somatic cell count were the top culling criteria, with high milk yield cited as the most difficult factor in removal decisions. While 54% recorded the most obvious reason for culling, only 7% documented multiple causes. Cull cows were typically transported by third parties; 80% farms sent cows directly to slaughter, while 52% sent them to auction. One-third of farms sold cows for continued dairy use. Euthanasia was performed on 93% of farms, mostly by employees, with minimal veterinary input. The study aimed to investigate producer perspectives on the culling decision-making process on commercial dairy farms. The findings highlight opportunities for improved veterinary involvement and the use of structured herd-level reports to support more strategic culling decisions. Full article

In the pursuit of high-quality economic development, addressing the challenge of high pollution and carbon emissions has become a critical issue. The rapid advancement of digital technology offers novel opportunities and tools to effectively mitigate these challenges. This study examines how digital technology empowerment can enhance the effectiveness of low-carbon city pilot (LCCP) policies in mitigating high pollution and carbon emissions, thereby improving green economic efficiency (GEE), using data from 283 Chinese cities between 2006 and 2021. The method adopted is a DID framework tailored for settings with staggered treatment adoption. Our analysis focuses on the low-carbon city pilot initiative, examining its consequences and how it interacts with digital technology. The results indicate that (1) the LCCP policy significantly promotes green economic efficiency; (2) digital technology empowerment demonstrates a substantial positive moderating impact upon the policy outcome, thus considerably reinforcing low-emission pilot policies’ improvement effect on GEE; (3) there are regional variations in the policy effectiveness, with the eastern region showing the most pronounced improvement, followed by the central region, while the western region exhibits a relatively lower response. This study provides theoretical and empirical support for further integrating digital technology with low-carbon policies and advancing urban green and high-quality development. Full article

The electrification of transport is rapidly reshaping power distribution networks, introducing new technical, regulatory, and operational challenges for Distribution System Operators (DSOs). This article presents an international review of electromobility integration strategies, analyzing experiences from Europe, Canada, Australia, and Greece. It examines how DSOs address grid impacts through smart charging, vehicle-to-grid (V2G) services, and demand flexibility mechanisms, alongside evolving regulatory and market frameworks. European initiatives—such as Germany’s Energiewende and the UK’s Demand Flexibility Service—demonstrate how coordinated planning and interoperability standards can transform electric vehicles (EVs) into valuable distributed energy resources. Case studies from Canada and Greece highlight region-specific challenges, such as limited access in remote communities or island grid constraints, while Australia’s high PV penetration offers unique opportunities for PV–EV synergies. The findings emphasize that DSOs must evolve into active system operators supported by digitalization, flexible market design, and user engagement. The study concludes by outlining implementation barriers, policy implications, and a roadmap for DSOs. Full article

Research into Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPASs) has expanded rapidly, yet the competencies, knowledge, skills, and other attributes (KSaOs) required of RPAS pilots remain comparatively underexamined. This review consolidates existing studies addressing human performance, subject matter expertise, training practices, and accident causation to provide a comprehensive account of the KSaOs underpinning safe civilian and commercial drone operations. Prior research demonstrates that early work drew heavily on military contexts, which may not generalize to contemporary civilian operations characterized by smaller platforms, single-pilot tasks, and diverse industry applications. Studies employing subject matter experts highlight cognitive demands in areas such as situational awareness, workload management, planning, fatigue recognition, perceptual acuity, and decision-making. Accident analyses, predominantly using the human factors accident classification system and related taxonomies, show that skill errors and preconditions for unsafe acts are the most frequent contributors to RPAS occurrences, with limited evidence of higher-level latent organizational factors in civilian contexts. Emerging research emphasizes that RPAS pilots increasingly perform data-collection tasks integral to professional workflows, requiring competencies beyond aircraft handling alone. The review identifies significant gaps in training specificity, selection processes, and taxonomy suitability, indicating opportunities for future research to refine RPAS competency frameworks and support improved operational safety. Background: Radspherin® is a novel α-emitting radiopharmaceutical administered intraperitoneally following complete cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS-HIPEC) for peritoneal metastases. It delivers short-range radiation aimed at eliminating residual microscopic disease. This qualitative study explored how participants with colorectal cancer experienced participating in an early-phase clinical trial involving CRS-HIPEC followed by Radspherin®. Materials and Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten participants enrolled in a phase 1/2a trial involving CRS-HIPEC and intraperitoneal Radspherin®. The analysis was guided by a phenomenological and interpretive approach using reflexive thematic analysis. Results: Participants expressed a strong sense of motivation and hope tied specifically to receiving Radspherin®, which they perceived as an opportunity to improve their prognosis. Many also viewed participation as a contribution to future cancer research. None attributed complications or side effects to Radspherin®. Clear and supportive verbal communication from healthcare professionals was highly valued, while the written information was described as overwhelming. Despite fears of recurrence, most participants remained optimistic about regaining a meaningful life. While experiences with Radspherin® were largely positive, participants also described pain, fatigue, and prolonged recovery related to CRS-HIPEC, including ongoing functional and psychosocial challenges. Conclusions: Participants associated Radspherin® with hope and a therapeutic benefit but did not link it to their adverse events. Their willingness to participate in experimental treatment was shaped by trust in clinicians, clear communication, and a desire for extended survival. However, the burden of CRS-HIPEC-related side effects underscores the importance of tailored follow-up and support. Full article

Water scarcity constitutes a major global challenge. Biomimetic water collection materials, which mimic the efficient water capture and transport mechanisms, offer a crucial approach to addressing the water crisis. This review summarizes the research progress on biomimetic water collection materials, focusing on biological prototypes, operational mechanisms, and core aspects of biomimetic design. Typical water-collecting biological surfaces in nature exhibit distinctive structure–function synergy: spider silk achieves directional droplet transport via periodic spindle-knot structures, utilizing Laplace pressure difference and surface energy gradient; the desert beetle’s back features hydrophilic microstructures and a hydrophobic waxy coating, forming a fog-water collection system based on heterogeneous wettability; cactus spines enhance droplet transport efficiency through the synergy of gradient grooves and barbs; and shorebird beaks enable rapid water convergence via liquid bridge effects. These biological prototypes provide vital inspiration for the design of biomimetic water collection materials. Drawing on biological mechanisms, researchers have developed diverse biomimetic water collection materials. This review offers a theoretical reference for their structural design and performance enhancement, highlighting bio-inspiration’s core value in high-efficiency water collection material development. Additionally, this paper discusses challenges and opportunities of these materials, providing insights for advancing the engineering application of next-generation high-efficiency biomimetic water collection materials. The cut-off low that struck Valencia (Spain) on 29 October 2024, causing 229 deaths, underscored the pressing need to promote awareness and strengthen education on natural hazards, particularly among school-aged students. In this scenario, revising the school curriculum becomes essential to ensure that future generations are prepared to confront the challenges posed by climate change. This study examines how knowledge related to natural hazards is incorporated into the official curricula of Secondary (ages 12 to 16) and Baccalaureate education (ages 16 to 19), based on the Royal Decrees enacted since 2022. The study aims to determine which contents are included, the Specific Competencies addressed, and the pedagogical approaches employed (descriptive, preventive, or critical), while also evaluating the coherence of these elements across subjects and educational levels. Findings reveal a scarce and often fragmented presence of such contents, with a predominance of descriptive approaches and limited emphasis on prevention or critical reflection. The study concludes that risk education should be transversal, contextually grounded, and transformative. Current curricular gaps and that current gaps and overlaps represent an opportunity to reinforce territorial literacy and enhance students’ resilience. Full article

This study explores the opportunities, challenges, and sustainability prospects of multifunctional farms in Greece that have been officially certified by the state. Through qualitative field research involving semi-structured questionnaires with farm operators, the study examines general operational aspects, environmental practices, social engagement, cultural activities, digital presence, and perspectives on institutional frameworks and development potentials. Results indicate that multifunctional farms contribute to environmental sustainability, local identity, and rural–urban linkages through organic farming, circular resource use, educational programs, and cultural activities. At the same time, structural challenges—including bureaucratic hurdles, complex licensing, limited institutional support, and low digital capacity—restrict their potential. Participants emphasized the need for tailored regulations, networking, guidance, and marketing support. While the sample is small, reflecting a low response rate, the study provides rich, context-specific insights into multifunctional farm practices and highlights the necessity for flexible policies, digital capacity-building, and community-oriented strategies to enhance the socio-economic and environmental impact of these farms.
