Traditionally, the surface suspended particulate matter (SPM) and freshwater fluxes have been computed using in situ SPM, salinity, and current measurements or through the numerical modeling. In this study, satellite-derived SPM concentration, ocean current, and sea surface salinity (SSS) are used to demonstrate the capability to characterize and quantify the surface SPM flux and freshwater flux in the Yellow Sea (YS) and East China Sea (ECS). The different routes for SPM and freshwater to transport from the coastal region to the interior ECS are identified. The seasonal and interannual SPM and freshwater fluxes from the coastal region of the ECS are further characterized and quantified. The average SPM flux reaches ~0.3–0.4 g m−2 s−1 along the route. The SPM and the freshwater fluxes in the region show different seasonality. The intensified SPM flux from the ECS coast to the offshore in winter is one order higher than the SPM flux in summer, while the offshore freshwater flux peaks in summer and weakens significantly in winter. Particularly, we found that the SPM and SSS features in the ECS changed in response to the 2020 summer Yangtze River flood event. These spatial and temporal changes for SPM and SSS in the ECS in the 2020 summer and early autumn were attributed to the anomalous surface SPM and freshwater fluxes in the same period. Full article

The formation and evolution of haze layers in planetary atmospheres play a critical role in shaping their chemical composition, radiative balance, and optical properties. In the outer solar system, the atmospheres of Titan and the giant planets exhibit a wide range of compositional and seasonal variability, creating environments favorable for the production of complex organic molecules under low-temperature conditions. Among them, Uranus—the smallest of the ice giants—has, since Voyager 2, emerged as a compelling target for future exploration due to unanswered questions regarding the composition and structure of its atmosphere, as well as its ring system and diverse icy moon population (which includes four possible ocean worlds). Titan, as the only moon to harbor a dense atmosphere, presents some of the most complex and unique organics found in the solar system. Central to the production of these organics are chemical processes driven by low-energy photons and electrons (<50 eV), which initiate reaction pathways leading to the formation of organic species and gas phase precursors to high-molecular-weight compounds, including aerosols. These aerosols, in turn, remain susceptible to further processing by low-energy UV radiation as they are transported from the upper atmosphere to the lower stratosphere and troposphere where condensation occurs. In this review, I aim to summarize the current understanding of low-energy (<50 eV) photon- and electron-induced chemistry, drawing on decades of insights from studies of Titan, with the objective of evaluating the relevance and extent of these processes on Uranus in anticipation of future observational and in situ exploration. Simulations are conducted using a microscale model framework to quantify differences in projected Annual Energy Production (AEP), Capacity Factor (CF) and wake losses for large offshore wind farms that arise due to different input datasets, installed capacity density (ICD) and/or wake parameterizations. Differences in CF (and AEP) and wake losses that arise due to the selection of the wake parameterization have the same magnitude as varying the ICD within the likely range of 2–9 MW km−2. CF simulated with most wake parameterizations have a near-linear relationship with ICD in this range, and the slope of the dependency on ICD is similar to that in mesoscale simulations with the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. Microscale simulations show that remotely generated wakes can double AEP losses in individual lease areas (LA) within a large LA cluster. Finally, simulations with the Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere-Wave-Sediment Transport (COAWST) model are shown to differ in terms of wake-induced AEP reduction from those with the WRF model by up to 5%, but this difference is smaller than differences in CF caused by the wind farm parameterization used in the mesoscale modeling. Enhanced evaluation of mesoscale and microscale wake parameterizations against observations of climatological representative AEP and time-varying power production from wind farm Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) data remains critical to improving the accuracy of predictive AEP modeling for large offshore wind farms. The long-term trend of coastal upwelling under global warming has been a research focus in recent years. Based on datasets including sea surface temperature (SST), sea surface wind, air–sea heat fluxes, ocean currents, and sea level pressure, this study explores the long-term trend and underlying mechanisms of the Oman coastal upwelling intensity in summer during 1993–2018. The results indicate a persistent decrease in SST within the Oman upwelling region during this period, suggesting an intensification trend of Oman upwelling. This trend is primarily driven by the strengthened positive wind stress curl (WSC), while the enhanced net shortwave radiation flux at the sea surface partially suppresses the SST cooling induced by the strengthened positive WSC, and the effect of horizontal oceanic heat transport is weak. Further analysis revealed that the increasing trend in the positive WSC results from the nonuniform responses of sea level pressure and the associated surface winds to global warming. There is an increasing trend in sea level pressure over the western Arabian Sea, coupled with decreasing atmospheric pressure over the Arabian Peninsula and the Somali Peninsula. This enhances the atmospheric pressure gradient between land and sea, and consequently strengthens the alongshore winds off the Oman coast. However, in the coastal region, wind changes are less pronounced, resulting in an insignificant trend in the alongshore component of surface wind. Consequently, it results in the increasing positive WSC over the Oman upwelling region, and sustains the intensification trend of Oman coastal upwelling. Full article

With the rapid progression of global industrialization and urbanization, emerging contaminants (ECs) have become pervasive in environmental media, posing considerable risks to ecosystems and human health. While multidisciplinary evidence continues to accumulate regarding their environmental persistence and bioaccumulative hazards, critical knowledge gaps persist in understanding their spatiotemporal distribution, cross-media migration mechanisms, and cascading ecotoxicological consequences. This review systematically investigates the global distribution patterns of ECs in aquatic environments over the past five years and evaluates their potential ecological risks. Furthermore, it examines the performance of various treatment technologies, focusing on economic cost, efficiency, and environmental sustainability. Methodologically aligned with PRISMA 2020 guidelines, this study implements dual independent screening protocols, stringent inclusion–exclusion criteria (n = 327 studies). Key findings reveal the following: (1) Occurrences of ECs show geographical clustering in highly industrialized river basins, particularly in Asia (37.05%), Europe (24.31%), and North America (14.01%), where agricultural pharmaceuticals and fluorinated compounds contribute disproportionately to environmental loading. (2) Complex transboundary pollutant transport through atmospheric deposition and oceanic currents, coupled with compound-specific partitioning behaviors across water–sediment–air interfaces. (3) Emerging hybrid treatment systems (e.g., catalytic membrane bioreactors, plasma-assisted advanced oxidation) achieve > 90% removal for recalcitrant ECs, though requiring 15–40% cost reductions for scalable implementation. This work provides actionable insights for developing adaptive regulatory frameworks and advancing green chemistry principles in environmental engineering practice. Full article

Mesoscale coastal eddies are key components of ocean circulation, mediating the transport of heat, nutrients, and marine debris. The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission provides high-resolution sea surface height data, offering a novel opportunity to improve the observation and characterization of these features, especially in coastal regions where conventional altimetry is limited. In this study, we investigate a mesoscale anticyclonic coastal eddy observed southwest of Mallorca Island, in the Balearic Sea, to assess the impact of SWOT-enhanced altimetry in resolving its structure and dynamics. Initial eddy identification is performed using satellite ocean color imagery, followed by a qualitative and quantitative comparison of multiple altimetric datasets, ranging from conventional nadir altimetry to wide-swath products derived from SWOT. We analyze multiple altimetric variables—Sea Level Anomaly, Absolute Dynamic Topography, Velocity Magnitude, Eddy Kinetic Energy, and Relative Vorticity—highlighting substantial differences in spatial detail and intensity. Our results show that SWOT-enhanced observations significantly improve the spatial characterization and dynamical depiction of the eddy. Furthermore, Lagrangian transport simulations reveal how altimetric resolution influences modeled transport pathways and retention patterns. These findings underline the critical role of SWOT in advancing the monitoring of coastal mesoscale processes and improving our ability to model oceanic transport mechanisms. Full article

By utilizing daily precipitation data from 400 meteorological stations in the Yellow River Basin (YRB) of China, atmospheric and oceanic reanalysis data, this study investigates the climatological characteristics, leading modes, and relationships with atmospheric circulation and sea surface temperature (SST) of summer extreme precipitation in the YRB from 1981 to 2020 through the extreme precipitation metrics and Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis. The results indicate that both the frequency and intensity of extreme precipitation exhibit an eastward and southward increasing pattern in terms of climate state, with regions of higher precipitation showing greater interannual variability. When precipitation in the YRB exhibits a spatially coherent enhancement pattern, high latitudes exhibits an Eurasian teleconnection wave train that facilitates the southward movement of cold air. Concurrently, the northward extension of the Western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH) enhances moisture transport from low latitudes to the YRB, against the backdrop of a transitioning SST pattern from El Niño to La Niña. When precipitation in the YRB shows a “south-increase, north-decrease” dipole pattern, the southward-shifted Ural high and westward-extended WPSH converge cold air and moist in the southern YRB region, with no dominant SST drivers identified. The precise forecasting of mesoscale eddy trajectories holds significant importance for understanding their mechanisms in driving global oceanic mass and heat transport. However, mesoscale eddies are influenced by numerous stochastic and uncertain factors, leading to substantial fluctuations in their attribute variables. Additionally, the trajectories of eddies are related to historical trends and interact with surrounding eddies. These render the accurate forecasting of mesoscale eddy trajectories a formidable challenge. This study proposes a novel dynamic forecasting framework for eddies’ trajectories, termed EddyGnet, a dual graph neural network framework that synergistically models the complex multivariable association and the spatiotemporal eddy association. In this framework, the dynamic association among eddy attribute variables is first explored by a multivariable association graph (MAG) learning module. Subsequently, the spatial and temporal association among eddies are concurrently analyzed using a spatiotemporal eddy association graph (STEAG) learning module. Finally, a decayed volatility loss function is designed to properly handle the complex and variable data features and improve the forecasting performance. The experimental results on the eddy dataset verify the effectiveness of our proposed EddyGnet, demonstrating superior predictive accuracy and stability compared with existing classical methods. The findings advance the mechanistic understanding of eddy dynamics and provide a transferable paradigm for geoscientific spatiotemporal modeling. Full article

Short-sea shipping, abbreviated SSS, is the transportation of goods by sea over relatively short distances, in contrast to intercontinental ocean and deep-sea shipping. Short-sea shipping (SSS) is important for cargo transportation in some regions of the world with many ports and well-developed liner shipping. The development and improvement of SSS systems is an important scientific and practical task. This article presents theoretical and experimental results of the development and optimization of SSS. A methodology for connecting and evaluating SSS and other transport chains was developed and tested by experimental studies, with the help of which it is possible to assess the efficiency of SSS and other transport chains, e.g., in terms of economy, freight transportation time, and environmental impact. The developed SSS methodology includes sea and land transport corridors, their assessment, and possible ways of optimizing transport chains using a comparative method and can be applied to various transport and logistics chains. The basis for the development and verification of the SSS methodology was the theoretical and experimental results of real short-sea shipping operations. The use of a comparative method based on which transport and logistics chains are assessed allows one to search for the most optimal SSS routes and possible factors that allow optimizing transportation costs and reducing transportation time and environmental impact. Aviation is widely recognised to have global-scale climate impacts through the formation of ozone (O3) in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS), driven by emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOX). Ozone is known to be one of the most potent greenhouse gases formed from the interaction of aircraft emission plumes with atmospheric species. This paper follows up on previous research, where a Photochemical Trajectory Model was shown to be a robust measure of ozone formation along flight trajectories post-flight. We use a combination of a global Lagrangian chemistry-transport model and a box model to quantify the impacts of aircraft NOX on UTLS ozone over a five-day timescale. This work expands on the spatial and temporal range, as well as the chemical accuracy reported previously, with a greater range of NOX chemistry relevant chemical species. Based on these models, route optimisation has been investigated, through the use of network theory and algorithms. This is to show the potential inclusion of an understanding of climate-sensitive regions of the atmosphere on route planning can have on aviation’s impact on Earth’s Thermal Radiation balance with existing resources and technology. Optimised flight trajectories indicated reductions in O3 formation per unit NOX are in the range 1–40% depending on the spatial aspect of the flight. Temporally, local winter times and equatorial regions are generally found to have the most significant O3 formation per unit NOX; moreover, hotspots were found over the Pacific and Indian Ocean. The Wyrtki Jet (WJ), a pivotal surface circulation system in the equatorial Indian Ocean, exerts significant regulatory control over regional climate dynamics through its intense eastward transport characteristics, which modulate water mass exchange, thermohaline balance, and cross-basin energy transfer. To address the scarcity of in situ observational data, this study developed a satellite remote sensing-driven multi-parameter coupled model and reconstructed the WJ’s seasonal variations using the XGBoost machine learning algorithm. The results revealed that wind stress components, sea surface temperature, and wind stress curl serve as the primary drivers of its seasonal dynamics. The XGBoost model demonstrated superior performance in reconstructing WJ’s seasonal variations, achieving coefficients of determination (R2) exceeding 0.97 across all seasons and maintaining root mean square errors (RMSE) below 0.2 m/s across all seasons. The reconstructed currents exhibited strong consistency with the Ocean Surface Current Analysis Real-time (OSCAR) dataset, showing errors below 0.05 m/s in spring and autumn and under 0.1 m/s in summer and winter. The proposed multi-feature integrated modeling framework delivers a high spatiotemporal resolution analytical tool for tropical Indian Ocean circulation dynamics research, while simultaneously establishing critical data infrastructure to decode monsoon current coupling mechanisms, advancing early warning systems for extreme climatic events, and optimizing regional marine resource governance. Meiyu is a critical component of the summer rainy season over the Yangtze–Huaihe River Basin (YHRB) in China, and the Meiyu onset date (MOD), serving as a key indicator of Meiyu, has garnered substantial attention. This article demonstrates an in-phase relationship between MOD and the preceding spring Barents–Kara Seas ice concentration (BKSIC) during 1979–2023. Specifically, the loss of spring BKSIC promotes an earlier MOD. Further analysis indicates that decreased spring BKSIC reduces the reflection of shortwave radiation, thereby enhancing oceanic solar radiation absorption and warming sea surface temperature (SST) in spring. The warming SST persists into summer and induces significant deep warming in the BKS through enhanced upward longwave radiation. The BKS deep warming triggers a wave train propagating southeastward to the East Asia–Northwest Pacific region, leading to a strengthened East Asian Subtropical Jet and an intensified Western North Pacific Subtropical High in summer. Under these conditions, the transport of warm and humid airflows into the YHRB is enhanced, promoting convective instability through increased low-level warming and humidity, combined with enhanced wind shear, which jointly contribute to an earlier MOD. These results may advance the understanding of MOD variability and provide valuable information for disaster prevention and mitigation. Full article

The barotropic sea level difference (SLD) across the Korea/Tsushima Strait (KTS) is considered an index of the volume transport into the East/Japan Sea. This study investigates the interannual variability of the barotropic SLD (the KTS inflow) from 1985 to 2017 and its relationship to upper-ocean (<300 m) current variability in the western North Pacific. An increase in the KTS inflow is associated with a weakening of the Kuroshio current through the Tokara Strait and upper-ocean cooling in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre, characteristic of a La Niña-like state. Diagnostic analysis reveals that the KTS inflow variability is linked to at least two statistically distinct and concurrent modes of oceanic variability. The first mode is tied to the El Niño–Southern Oscillation through large-scale changes in the Kuroshio system. The second mode, which is linearly uncorrelated with the first, is associated with regional eddy kinetic energy variability in the western North Pacific. The identification of these parallel pathways suggests a complex regulatory system for the KTS inflow. This study provides a new framework for understanding the multi-faceted connection between the KTS and upstream oceanic processes, with implications for the predictability of the ocean environmental conditions in the East/Japan Sea. This study presents the implementation of a scalar transport algorithm in the recently developed General Ocean Model (GOM), a three-dimensional, unstructured grid, finite volume/finite difference model. Solving the advection–diffusion transport equation is an essential part of any ocean circulation model since the baroclinic density gradient distinguishes saline water from freshwater. To achieve both high accuracy and computational efficiency, we adopted a second-order semi-implicit Total Variation Diminishing (TVD) scheme. The TVD approach, known for its ability to suppress non-physical oscillations near steep gradients, provides a higher-fidelity representation of salinity fronts without introducing significant numerical artifacts. The TVD algorithm is constructed with the first-order Upwind scheme, which is known for suffering from excessive numerical diffusion, and the higher-order anti-diffusive flux term. The implemented transport algorithm is evaluated using two standard test cases, an ideal lock exchange problem and a U-shaped channel problem, and it is further applied to simulate salinity dynamics in Mobile Bay, Alabama. The model results from both the first-order Upwind and second-order TVD schemes are compared. The results indicate that the TVD scheme marginally improves the resolution of salinity fronts while maintaining computational stability and efficiency. The implementation enables a flexible and straightforward transition between the first-order scheme, which is faster than the second-order scheme, and the second-order scheme, which is less diffusive than the first-order scheme, enhancing the GOM’s capability for realistic and efficient salinity simulations in a tidally driven estuarine system. This study presents a global aerosol climatology derived from six years (October 2018–October 2024) of the Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) observations, using a U-Net Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) machine learning algorithm for Cloud–Aerosol Discrimination (CAD). Despite ICESat-2’s design primarily as an altimetry mission with a single-wavelength, low-power, high-repetition-rate laser, ICESat-2 effectively captures global aerosol distribution patterns and can provide valuable insights to bridge the observational gap between the Cloud–Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) and Earth Cloud, Aerosol and Radiation Explorer (EarthCARE) missions to support future spaceborne lidar mission design. The machine learning approach outperforms traditional thresholding methods, particularly in complex conditions of cloud embedded in aerosol, owing to a finer spatiotemporal resolution. Our results show that annually, between 60°S and 60°N, 78.4%, 17.0%, and 4.5% of aerosols are located within the 0–2 km, 2–4 km, and 4–6 km altitude ranges, respectively. Regional analyses cover the Arabian Sea (ARS), Arabian Peninsula (ARP), South Asia (SAS), East Asia (EAS), Southeast Asia (SEA), the Americas, and tropical oceans. Vertical aerosol structures reveal strong trans-Atlantic dust transport from the Sahara in summer and biomass burning smoke transport from the Savanna during dry seasons. Marine aerosol belts are most prominent in the tropics, contrasting with earlier reports of the Southern Ocean maxima. This work highlights the importance of vertical aerosol distributions needed for more accurate quantification of the aerosol–cloud interaction influence on radiative forcing for improving global climate models.
