To investigate the effect of liquid-phase laser ablation on the hardness of WC-Co cemented carbide, this study performed hardness testing, elemental distribution analysis, and XRD phase analysis. The influence of ablation times on the hardness, elemental distribution, and phase composition of WC-Co cemented carbide was examined, and a model describing the hardness evolution mechanism under liquid-phase laser ablation was proposed. The results demonstrated that the hardness of WC-Co cemented carbide increased with the number of ablations. After 14 ablation times, the maximum hardness reached 2800 HV, representing an increase of 51%–56% compared to the matrix hardness. As the number of ablations increased, the content of ditungsten carbide (W2C) and tungsten carbide (WC) in the cemented carbide increased, the WC grain size decreased, the dislocation density increased, and the distribution became more uniform. The refinement of WC grains and the elevated dislocation density facilitated stronger intergranular bonding, thereby significantly enhancing the material’s hardness. This study provides theoretical guidance for improving the surface mechanical properties of WC-Co cemented carbide tools through liquid-phase laser ablation. Full article

As an efficient clean energy technology, water electrolysis for hydrogen production has its efficiency limited by the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics, which drives the demand for the development of high-performance anode OER catalysts. This work constructs bimetallic (Al, Mn) co-doped nanoporous spinel CoFe2O4 (np-CFO) with a tunable structure and composition as an OER catalyst through a simple two-step dealloying strategy. The as-formed np-CFO (Al and Mn) features a hierarchical flaky configuration; that is, there are a large number of fine nanosheets attached to the surface of a regular micron-sized flake, which not only increases the number of active sites but also enhances mass transport efficiency. Consequently, the optimized catalyst exhibits a low OER overpotential of only 320 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2, a minimal Tafel slope of 45.09 mV dec−1, and exceptional durability. Even under industrial conditions (6 M KOH, 60 °C), it only needs 1.83 V to achieve a current density of 500 mA cm−2 and can maintain good stability for approximately 100 h at this high current density. Theoretical simulations indicate that Al and Mn co-doping could indeed optimize the electronic structure of CFO and thus decrease the energy barrier of OER to 1.35 eV. This work offers a practical approach towards synthesizing efficient and stable OER catalysts. Full article

RANKL/OPG Axis and Bone Mineral Density in Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Background: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), such as Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), may impair bone metabolism, particularly in children. The RANKL/OPG axis, as a key regulator of bone turnover, may contribute to these disturbances. However, data in the pediatric population remain limited. Methods: A single-center, prospective observational study included 100 children aged 4–18 years, with a comparable number of girls and boys. Among them, 72 had IBD (27 CD, 45 UC) and 28 were healthy controls. Anthropometric, biochemical, and densitometric assessments were performed, including serum levels of RANKL and OPG, and markers of inflammation and bone turnover. Results: Children with CD had significantly lower height and weight percentiles compared to UC and controls. Serum RANKL and the RANKL/OPG ratio were significantly elevated in IBD patients, particularly in CD (p < 0.01). Total body BMD Z-scores were lower in IBD compared to controls (p = 0.03). Low BMD was found in 14.7% of UC and 26.3% of CD patients. In both groups, over 30% had values in the “gray zone” (−1.0 to −2.0). A positive correlation was observed between height and weight and bone density (p < 0.01). Higher OPG was associated with lower body weight (p < 0.001), while increased RANKL correlated with osteocalcin (p = 0.03). Patients receiving biological therapy had significantly lower BMD. Conclusions: Pediatric IBD is associated with significant alterations in the RANKL/OPG axis and reduced bone density. These findings support early screening and suggest RANKL/OPG as a potential biomarker of skeletal health. Full article

Railway systems occupy a predominant role in urban transport, providing efficient, high-capacity mobility. Progress in rail transport allows fast traveling, whilst environmental concerns and CO2 emissions are on the rise. The integration of railway systems with renewable energy source (RES)-based stations presents a promising avenue to improve the sustainability, reliability, and efficiency of urban transport networks. A storage system is needed to both ensure a continuous power supply and meet train demand at the station. Batteries (BTs) offer high energy density, while supercapacitors (SCs) offer both a large number of charge and discharge cycles, and high-power density. This paper proposes a hybrid RES (photovoltaic and wind), combined with batteries and supercapacitors constituting the hybrid energy storage system (HESS). One major drawback of trains is the long charging time required in stations, so they have been fitted with SCs to allow them to charge up quickly. A new fuzzy energy management strategy (F-EMS) is proposed. This supervision strategy optimizes the power flow between renewable energy sources, HESS, and trains. DC bus voltage regulation is involved, maintaining BT and SC charging levels within acceptable ranges. The simulation results, carried out using MATLAB/Simulink, demonstrate the effectiveness of the suggested fuzzy energy management strategy for various production conditions and train demand. A combination of lattice Boltzmann method (LBM)-based computations and Lagrangian particle tracking simulations is presented to study the dispersion and clustering of inertial particles in a forced homogeneous and isotropic turbulent flow and to analyze the relative importance of the various forces acting on particles. The particle dynamics are investigated across a wide range of particle-to-fluid density ratios (from 0.01 to 1000) and Stokes numbers (from 1.4 × 10−6 to 55.4), at a Taylor microscale Reynolds number of 33.6. Particle clustering is quantified using Voronoï tessellations. Results confirm that clustering intensity is maximized at Stokes numbers around unity, where particles preferentially accumulate in low-vorticity regions. Particle dynamics within the turbulent flow considered here vary fundamentally with density and size, even among tracer-like particles. Low-density and neutrally buoyant particles mimic tracers via either velocity matching or acceleration balance, while dense particles follow inertia-dominated dynamics. Full article

The steady plane radial diverging flow of a viscous or inviscid particle-fluid suspension is studied using a novel two-fluid model. For the initial flow field with a uniform particle distribution, our results show that the relative velocity of particles with respect to the fluid depends on their inlet velocity ratio at the entrance, the mass density ratio and the Stokes number of particles, and the particles heavier (or lighter) than the fluid will move faster (or slower) than the fluid when their inlet velocities are equal (then Stokes drag vanishes at the entrance). The relative motion of particles with respect to the fluid leads to particle migration and the non-uniform distribution of particles. An explicit expression is obtained for the steady particle distribution eventually attained due to particle migration. Our results demonstrated and confirmed that, for both light particles (gas bubbles) and heavy particles, depending on the particle-to-fluid mass density ratio, the volume fraction of particles attains its maximum or minimum value near the entrance of the radial flow and after then monotonically decreases or increases with the radial coordinate and converges to an asymptotic value determined by the particle-to-fluid inlet velocity ratio. Explicit solutions given here could help quantify the steady particle distribution in the decelerating radial flow of a particle-fluid suspension. Full article

Mg-Li-based dissoluble metal is a promising material for preparing dissoluble magnesium alloy wires. However, there are few reports on the development of Mg-Li dissoluble magnesium alloy wires so far. In this paper, the mechanical properties and dissoluble properties of as-drawn and annealed LA141-0.5Cu wires were investigated in detail. It was found that the tensile strength of the LA141-0.5Cu wires decreased from 160 MPa to 127 MPa and the elongation increased from 17% to 22% after annealing. The difference in corrosion rates (93 °C/3% KCl solution) between the as-drawn wires and annealed wires is not significant, with values of 5.1 mg·cm−2·h−1 and 4.5 mg·cm−2·h−1, respectively. This can be explained as follows: after annealing, the number of dislocations in the wire decreases, the strength decreases, and the plasticity increases. The reason why the wires have a significant corrosion rate is that there is a large potential difference between the Cu-containing second phase and the magnesium matrix, which forms galvanic corrosion. The decrease in dislocation density after annealing leads to a slight reduction in the corrosion rate of the wires. This work provides a qualified material for fabricating temporary blocking knots for the exploitation of unconventional oil and gas resources. Full article

Gully erosion refers to the landform formed by soil and water loss through gully development, which is a critical manifestation of soil degradation. However, research on the spatio-temporal variations in erosion gullies at the county scale remains insufficient, particularly regarding changes in gully aggregation and their driving factors. This study utilized high-resolution remote sensing imagery, gully interpretation information, topographic data, meteorological records, vegetation coverage, soil texture, and land use datasets to analyze the spatio-temporal patterns and influencing factors of erosion gully evolution in Bin County, Heilongjiang Province of China, from 2012 to 2022. Kernel density evaluation (KDE) analysis was also employed to explore these dynamics. The results indicate that the gully number in Bin County has significantly increased over the past decade. Gully development involves not only headward erosion of gully heads but also lateral expansion of gully channels. Gully evolution is most pronounced in slope intervals. While gentle slopes and slope intervals host the highest density of gullies, the aspect does not significantly influence gully development. Vegetation coverage exhibits a clear threshold effect of 0.6 in inhibiting erosion gully formation. Additionally, cultivated areas contain the largest number of gullies and experience the most intense changes; gully aggregation in forested and grassland regions shows an upward trend; the central part of the black soil region has witnessed a marked decrease in gully aggregation; and meadow soil areas exhibit relatively stable spatio-temporal variations in gully distribution. These findings provide valuable data and decision-making support for soil erosion control and transformation efforts. Full article

We adapt previously developed conceptual and numerical models of ciguateric food chains on the Great Barrier Reef, Australia, to model the bioaccumulation of ciguatoxins (CTXs) in parrotfish, the simplest food chain with only two trophic levels. Our model indicates that relatively low (1 cell/cm2) densities of Gambierdiscus/Fukuyoa species (hereafter collectively referred to as Gambierdiscus) producing known concentrations of CTX are unlikely to be a risk of producing ciguateric fishes on the Great Barrier Reef unless CTX can accumulate and be retained in parrotfish over many months. Cell densities on turf algae equivalent to 10 Gambierdiscus/cm2 producing known maximum concentrations of Pacific-CTX-4 (0.6 pg P-CTX-4/cell) are more difficult to assess but could be a risk. This cell density may be a higher risk for parrotfish than we previously suggested for production of ciguateric groupers (third-trophic-level predators) since second-trophic-level fishes can accumulate CTX loads without the subsequent losses that occur between trophic levels. Our analysis suggests that the ratios of parrotfish length-to-area grazed and weight-to-area grazed scale differently (allometrically), where the area grazed is a proxy for the number of Gambierdiscus consumed and hence proportional to toxin accumulation. Such scaling can help explain fish size–toxicity relationships within and between trophic levels for ciguateric fishes. Our modelling reveals that CTX bioaccumulates but does not necessarily biomagnify in food chains, with the relative enrichment and depletion rates of CTX varying with fish size and/or trophic level through an interplay of local and regional food chain influences. Our numerical model for the bioaccumulation and transfer of CTX across food chains helps conceptualize the development of ciguateric fishes by comparing scenarios that reveal limiting steps in producing ciguateric fish and focuses attention on the relative contributions from each part of the food chain rather than only on single components, such as CTX production. This investigation employs focused ion beam (FIB) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques to systematically analyze the distribution characteristics of fission products in medium-burnup (40.6 GWd/tU) UO2 fuel and their impact on fuel cracking behavior. The findings indicate that grain boundary embrittlement is predominantly attributed to the accumulation of spherical particles of solid fission products, including Mo, Ru, Rh, and Pd, which preferentially segregate around impurity particles, leading to localized stress concentration. Intragranular cracks are associated with the strip-like segregation of fission elements and the amorphization process. It also reveals that the size and number density of intragranular Xe bubbles are ~6.24 ± 0.24 nm and 5.2 × 1022 m−3, respectively, while Xe did not, under the analyzed conditions, significantly influence crack nucleation. This research elucidates the correlation mechanism between fission product distribution and fuel cracking behavior at medium burn up, offering experimental evidence to enhance the reliability and safety of nuclear fuel assemblies. This study presents the results of axial tension (uplift) and compression tests evaluating the capacity of helical piles installed in Shahriyar dense sand using the UTM apparatus. Thirteen pile load experiments involving single-, double-, or triple-helix piles with shaft diameters of 13 mm were performed, including six compression tests and seven tension tests with different pitches (Dh =13, 20, and 25 mm). The tested helical piles with a helix diameter of 51 mm were considered, and the interhelix spacing approximately ranged between two and four times the helix diameter. Through laboratory testing techniques, the Shahriyar dense sand properties were identified. Alongside theoretical analyses of helical piles, the tensile and compressive pile load tests outcomes in dense sand with a relative density of 70% are presented. It was found that the maximum capacities of the compressive and tensile helical piles were up to six and eleven times that of the shaft capacity, respectively. With an increasing number of helices, the settlement reduced, and the bearing capacity increased. Consequently, helical piles can be manufactured in smaller sizes compared to steel piles. Overall, the compressive capacities of helical piles were higher than the tensile capacities under similar conditions. Single-helices piles with a pitch of 20 mm and double-helices piles with a pitch of 13 mm were more effective than others. Therefore, placing helices at the shallower depths and using smaller pitches result in better performance. In this study, when compared to values from the L1–L2 method, the theoretical method slightly underestimates the ultimate compression capacity and both overestimates and underestimates the uplift capacity for single- and double-helical piles, respectively, due to the individual bearing mode and cylindrical shear mode. Bioactive glass materials have been used for decades in orthopedic surgery, traumatology, and oral and maxillofacial surgery to repair bone defects. This study aimed to evaluate in vitro the survival and proliferation of MG63 human osteosarcoma-derived cells on S53P4 bioactive glass (BonAlive® granules). Microscopic visualization was performed to directly observe the interactions between the cells and the material. Osteoblast-like cells were examined on non-adherent test plates, on tissue culture (TC)-treated plates and on the surface of the bioglass to assess the differences. Cell survival and proliferation were monitored using a CCK-8 optical density assay. Comparing the mean OD of MG63 cells in MEM on TC-treated plates with cells on BG, we detected a significant difference (p < 0.05), over each time of observation. The sustained cell proliferation confirmed the non-cytotoxic property of the bioglass, as the cell number increased continuously at 48, 72, 96, and 168 h and even did not plateau after 168 h. Since the properties of bioglasses can vary significantly depending on their composition and environment, a thorough characterization of their biocompatibility is crucial to ensure their effective and appropriate application—for example, during hip and knee prosthesis insertion. Wildlife–vehicle collisions (WVCs) remain a significant cause of animal mortality worldwide, particularly in regions experiencing rapid road network expansion. During the COVID-19 pandemic, a number of studies reported decreased WVC rates, attributing this trend to reduced traffic volumes. However, the validity of the simplified assumption that “fewer vehicles means fewer collisions” remains underexplored from a mechanistic perspective. This study aims to reevaluate that assumption using two simulation-based models that incorporate both the physics of vehicle movement and behavioral parameters of road-crossing animals. Employing an inverse modeling approach with quasi-realistic traffic scenarios, we quantify how vehicle speed, spacing, and animal hesitation affect collision likelihood. The results indicate that approximately 10% of modeled cases contradict the prevailing assumption, with collision risk peaking at intermediate traffic densities. These findings challenge common interpretations of WVC dynamics and underscore the need for more refined, behaviorally informed mitigation strategies. We suggest that integrating such approaches into road planning and conservation policy—particularly under the European Union’s ‘Vision Zero’ framework—could help reduce wildlife mortality more effectively in future scenarios, including potential pandemics or mobility disruptions. The current study examines the influence of a varying gravity field and its interaction with density stratification. This represents a novel area in baroclinic flow analysis. The classical vortex and internal wave structures in stratified flows are shown to be significantly modified when gravity varies with height. Vortices may shift, stretch, or weaken depending on the direction and strength of gravity variation, and internal waves develop asymmetries or damping that are not present under constant gravity. We examine the influence of gravity variation on the flow of both homogeneous and density-stratified fluids in a channel with topography consisting of a Gaussian obstacle lying at the bottom of the channel. The flow is without inertia, induced by the translation of the top plate. Both the density and gravity are assumed to vary linearly with height, with the minimum density at the moving top plate. The narrow-gap approach is used to generate the flow field in terms of the pressure gradient along the top plate, which, in turn, is obtained in terms of the bottom topography and the three parameters of the problem, namely, the Froude number and the density and gravity gradients. The resulting stream function is a fifth-order polynomial in the vertical coordinate. In the absence of stratification, the flow is smooth, affected rather slightly by the variable topography, with an essentially linear drop in the pressure induced by the contraction. For a weak stratified fluid, the streamlines become distorted in the form of standing gravity waves. For a stronger stratification, separation occurs, and a pair of vortices generally appears on the two sides of the obstacle, the size of which depends strongly on the flow parameters. The influence of gravity stratification is closely coupled to that of density. We examine conditions where the coupling impacts the pressure and the velocity fields, particularly the onset of gravity waves and vortex flow. Only a mild density gradient is needed for flow separation to occur. The influence of the amplitude and width of the obstacle is also investigated. Full article

The dynamics of the vibrational mode of motion of the driving member of a nonideal system, a mixing–whipping device based on a simple slide-crank mechanism, was studied. The highly nonlinear differential equations of motion were solved numerically by the Runge–Kutta method. The interaction of the mixing–whipping device with the nonideal excitation source causes the rotational speed of the engine shaft and the rotation angle of the driving member to fluctuate, accomplishing a damped process. The parameters of the device and the nonideal energy source have an effect on the kinematic, vibrational and energy characteristics of the system. An increase in the engine’s torque, crank length, number and radius of piston holes, and piston mass, as well as a decrease in the fluid’s density, leads to a reduction in the oscillation range of the crank angle, amplitude and period of angular velocity oscillations of the engine shaft and the mixing–whipping force power. The effects of a nonideal energy source may be used in designing a mixing–whipping device based on a slider-crank mechanism to select effective system parameters and an energy-saving motor in accordance with the requirements of technological processes and products.
