Reliable, non-destructive grading of fresh fruit requires simultaneous assessment of external morphology and hidden internal defects. Camera-based grading of fresh fruit using colorimetric (RGB) and near-infrared (NIR) imaging often misses subsurface bruising and cannot capture the fruit’s true shape, leading to inconsistent quality assessment and increased waste. To address this, we developed a 4D-grading pipeline that fuses visible and near-infrared (VNIR) and short-wave infrared (SWIR) hyperspectral imaging with structured-light 3D scanning to non-destructively evaluate both internal defects and external form. Our contributions are (1) flagging the defects in fruits based on the reflectance information, (2) accurate shape and defect measurement based on the 3D data of fruits, and (3) an interpretable, decision-tree framework that assigns USDA-style quality (Premium, Grade 1/2, Reject) and size (Small–Extra Large) labels. We demonstrate this approach through preliminary results, suggesting that 4D hyperspectral imaging may offer advantages over single-modality methods by providing clear, interpretable decision rules and the potential for adaptation to other produce types. Agricultural nondestructive testing technology is pivotal in safeguarding food quality assurance, safety monitoring, and supply chain transparency. While conventional optical methods such as near-infrared spectroscopy and hyperspectral imaging demonstrate proficiency in surface composition analysis, their constrained penetration depth and environmental sensitivity limit effectiveness in dynamic agricultural inspections. This review highlights the transformative potential of microwave technologies, systematically examining their operational principles, current implementations, and developmental trajectories for agricultural quality control. Microwave technology leverages dielectric response mechanisms to overcome traditional limitations, such as low-frequency penetration for grain silo moisture testing and high-frequency multi-parameter analysis, enabling simultaneous detection of moisture gradients, density variations, and foreign contaminants. Established applications span moisture quantification in cereal grains, oilseed crops, and plant tissues, while emerging implementations address storage condition monitoring, mycotoxin detection, and adulteration screening. The high-frequency branch of the microwave–millimeter wave systems enhances analytical precision through molecular resonance effects and sub-millimeter spatial resolution, achieving trace-level contaminant identification. Current challenges focus on three areas: excessive absorption of low-frequency microwaves by high-moisture agricultural products, significant path loss of microwave high-frequency signals in complex environments, and the lack of a standardized dielectric database. In the future, it is essential to develop low-cost, highly sensitive, and portable systems based on solid-state microelectronics and metamaterials, and to utilize IoT and 6G communications to enable dynamic monitoring. This review not only consolidates the state-of-the-art but also identifies future innovation pathways, providing a roadmap for scalable deployment of next-generation agricultural NDT systems. Corrosion in maritime ballast tanks is a major driver of maintenance costs and operational risks for maritime assets. Inspections are hampered by complex geometries, hazardous conditions, and the limitations of conventional methods, particularly visual assessment, which struggles with subjectivity, accessibility, and early detection, especially under coatings. This paper critically examines these challenges and explores the potential of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) and Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) to form the basis of improved inspection approaches. We discuss LiDAR’s utility for accurate 3D mapping and providing a spatial framework and HSI’s potential for objective material identification and surface characterization based on spectral signatures along a wavelength range of 400-1000nm (visible and near infrared). Preliminary findings from laboratory tests are presented, demonstrating the basic feasibility of HSI for differentiating surface conditions (corrosion, coatings, bare metal) and relative coating thickness, alongside LiDAR’s capability for detailed geometric capture. Although these results do not represent a deployable system, they highlight how LiDAR and HSI could address key limitations of current practices and suggest promising directions for future research into integrated sensor-based corrosion assessment strategies. Grains and their derivatives play a crucial role as staple foods for the global population. Identifying grains in the food chain that are free from mycotoxin contamination is essential. Researchers have explored various traditional detection methods to address this concern. However, as grain consumption becomes increasingly time-sensitive and dynamic, traditional approaches face growing limitations. In recent years, emerging techniques—particularly molecular-based vibrational spectroscopy methods such as visible–near-infrared (Vis–NIR), near-infrared (NIR), Raman, mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy, and hyperspectral imaging (HSI)—have been applied to assess fungal contamination in grains and their products. This review summarizes research advances and applications of vibrational spectroscopy in detecting mycotoxins in grains from 2019 to 2025. The fundamentals of their work, information acquisition characteristics and their applicability in food matrices were outlined. The findings indicate that vibrational spectroscopy techniques can serve as valuable tools for identifying fungal contamination risks during the production, transportation, and storage of grains and related products, with each technique suited to specific applications. Given the close link between grain-based foods and humans, future efforts should further enhance the practicality of vibrational spectroscopy by simultaneously optimizing spectral analysis strategies across multiple aspects, including chemometrics, model transfer, and data-driven artificial intelligence. Pesticide residues in fruits and vegetables pose a serious threat to food safety. Traditional detection methods have defects such as complex operation, high cost, and long detection time. Therefore, it is of great significance to develop rapid, non-destructive, and efficient detection technologies and equipment. In recent years, the combination of spectroscopic techniques and imaging technologies with machine learning algorithms has developed rapidly, providing a new attempt to solve this problem. This review focuses on the research progress of the combination of spectroscopic techniques (near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), hyperspectral imaging technology (HSI), surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), and imaging techniques (visible light (VIS) imaging, NIRS imaging, HSI technology, terahertz imaging) with machine learning algorithms in the detection of pesticide residues in fruits and vegetables. It also explores the huge challenges faced by the application of spectroscopic and imaging technologies combined with machine learning algorithms in the intelligent perception of pesticide residues in fruits and vegetables: the performance of machine learning models requires further enhancement, the fusion of imaging and spectral data presents technical difficulties, and the commercialization of hardware devices remains underdeveloped. This review has proposed an innovative method that integrates spectral and image data, enhancing the accuracy of pesticide residue detection through the construction of interpretable machine learning algorithms, and providing support for the intelligent sensing and analysis of agricultural and food products. Design and Development of an Intelligent Chlorophyll Content Detection System for Cotton Leaves

In order to meet the needs for the rapid detection of crop growth and support variable management in farmland, an intelligent chlorophyll content in cotton leaves (CCC) detection system based on hyperspectral imaging (HSI) technology was designed and developed. The system includes a near-infrared (NIR) hyperspectral image acquisition module, a spectral extraction module, a main control processor module, a model acceleration module, a display module, and a power module, which are used to achieve rapid and non-destructive detection of chlorophyll content. Firstly, spectral images of cotton canopy leaves during the seedling, budding, and flowering-boll stages were collected, and the dataset was optimized using the first-order differential algorithm (1D) and Savitzky–Golay five-term quadratic smoothing (SG) algorithm. The results showed that SG had better processing performance. Secondly, the sparrow search algorithm optimized backpropagation neural network (SSA-BPNN) and one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1DCNN) algorithms were selected to establish a chlorophyll content detection model. The results showed that the determination coefficients Rp2 of the chlorophyll SG-1DCNN detection model during the seedling, budding, and flowering-boll stages were 0.92, 0.97, and 0.95, respectively, and the model performance was superior to SG-SSA-BPNN. Therefore, the SG-1DCNN model was embedded into the detection system. Finally, a CCC intelligent detection system was developed using Python 3.12.3, MATLAB 2020b, and ENVI, and the system was subjected to application testing. The results showed that the average detection accuracy of the CCC intelligent detection system in the three stages was 98.522%, 99.132%, and 97.449%, respectively. Meanwhile, the average detection time for the samples is only 20.12 s. The research results can effectively solve the problem of detecting the nutritional status of cotton in the field environment, meet the real-time detection needs of the field environment, and provide solutions and technical support for the intelligent perception of crop production. To noninvasively and precisely discriminate among the growth stages of multiple cultivars of navel oranges simultaneously, the fusion of the technologies of near-infrared (NIR) hyperspectral imaging (HSI) combined with machine vision (MV) and deep learning is employed. NIR reflectance spectra and hyperspectral and RGB images for 740 Gannan navel oranges of five cultivars are collected. Based on preprocessed spectra, optimally selected hyperspectral images, and registered RGB images, a dual-branch multi-modal feature fusion convolutional neural network (CNN) model is established. In this model, a spectral branch is designed to extract spectral features reflecting internal compositional variations, while the image branch is utilized to extract external color and texture features from the integration of hyperspectral and RGB images. Finally, growth stages are determined via the fusion of features. To validate the availability of the proposed method, various machine-learning and deep-learning models are compared for single-modal and multi-modal data. The results demonstrate that multi-modal feature fusion of HSI and MV combined with the constructed dual-branch CNN deep-learning model yields excellent growth stage discrimination in navel oranges, achieving an accuracy, recall rate, precision, F1 score, and kappa coefficient on the testing set are 95.95%, 96.66%, 96.76%, 96.69%, and 0.9481, respectively, providing a prominent way to precisely monitor the growth stages of fruits. The Flexible Combined Imager (FCI), developed as the next-generation imager for the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) satellite series, represents a significant advancement over its predecessor, SEVIRI, on the Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) satellites. FCI offers more spectral bands, higher spatial resolution, and faster imaging capabilities, supporting a wide range of applications in weather forecasting, climate monitoring, and environmental analysis. On 13 January 2024, the FCI onboard MTG-I1 (renamed Meteosat-12 in December 2024) experienced a critical anomaly involving the failure of its onboard Calibration and Obturation Mechanism (COM). As a result, the use of the COM was discontinued to preserve operational safety, leaving the instrument dependent on alternative calibration methods. This loss of onboard calibration presents immediate challenges, particularly for the infrared channels, including image artifacts (e.g., striping), reduced radiometric accuracy, and diminished stability. To address these issues, EUMETSAT implemented an external calibration approach leveraging algorithms from the Global Space-based Inter-Calibration System (GSICS). The inter-calibration algorithm transfers stable and accurate calibration from the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) hyperspectral instrument aboard Metop-B and Metop-C satellites to FCI’s infrared channels daily, ensuring continued data quality. Comparisons with Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) data from NOAA-20 and NOAA-21 satellites using a similar algorithm is then used to validate the radiometric performance of the calibration. This confirms that the external calibration method effectively compensates for the absence of onboard blackbody calibration for the infrared channels. For the visible and near-infrared channels, slower degradation rates and pre-anomaly calibration ensure continued accuracy, with vicarious calibration expected to become the primary source. This adaptive calibration strategy introduces a novel paradigm for in-flight calibration of geostationary instruments and offers valuable insights for satellite missions lacking onboard calibration devices. The curing process of a concrete sample has a significant influence on hydration and its strength. This means that inadequate curing conditions lead to a loss of concrete quality and negative consequences in structural engineering. In addition, different state-of-the-art (SOTA) curing surface treatments and hydration periods have a significant effect on durability. This paper introduces an innovative non-destructive method to detect the development of the hydration process under different treatment conditions. Hyperspectral imaging is a non-contact measurement technique that provides detailed information on hydration characteristics within an electromagnetic wavelength range. A comparative laboratory measurement was conducted on twelve concrete samples, subjected to three curing treatments and four curing surface treatments, over a hydration period from the 1st to the 56th day. Additionally, artificial neural networks and convolutional neural networks have achieved classification accuracies of 67.8% (hydration time), 83.3% (curing regime), and 87.6% (surface type), demonstrating the feasibility of using neural networks for hydration monitoring. In this study, the results revealed differences in near-infrared spectral signatures, representing the type of curing treatment, curing surface, and hydration time of the concrete. The dataset was classified and analyzed using neural networks. For each hydration treatment, three different models were developed to achieve better prediction performance for hyperspectral imaging analysis. This method demonstrated a high level of reliability in investigating curing surface treatments, curing treatments, and hydration time. A recommended method for using hyperspectral imaging to evaluate the cured quality of concrete will be developed in future research. Full article

Nowadays, the development of the food industry and economic recovery have driven escalating consumer demands for high-quality, nutritious, and safe food products, and spectroscopic technologies are increasingly prominent as essential tools for food quality inspection. Concurrently, the rapid rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has created new opportunities for food quality detection. As a critical branch of AI, deep learning synergizes with spectroscopic technologies to enhance spectral data processing accuracy, enable real-time decision making, and address challenges from complex matrices and spectral noise. This review summarizes six cutting-edge nondestructive spectroscopic and imaging technologies, near-infrared/mid-infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, hyperspectral imaging (spanning the UV, visible, and NIR regions, to simultaneously capture both spatial distribution and spectral signatures of sample constituents), terahertz spectroscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), along with their transformative applications. We systematically elucidate the fundamental principles and distinctive merits of each technological approach, with a particular focus on their deep learning-based integration with spectral fusion techniques and hybrid spectral-heterogeneous fusion methodologies. Our analysis reveals that the synergy between spectroscopic technologies and deep learning demonstrates unparalleled superiority in speed, precision, and non-invasiveness. Future research should prioritize three directions: multimodal integration of spectroscopic technologies, edge computing in portable devices, and AI-driven applications, ultimately establishing a high-precision and sustainable food quality inspection system spanning from production to consumption. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is a powerful tool for precision imaging tasks such as vegetation analysis, but its widespread use remains limited due to the high cost of equipment and challenges in data acquisition. To explore a more accessible alternative, we propose a Green Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (GNDVI)-guided green channel adjustment method, termed G-RGB, which enables the estimation of near-infrared (NIR) reflectance from standard RGB image inputs. The G-RGB method enhances the green channel to encode NIR-like information, generating a spectrally enriched representation. Building on this, we introduce FUSE-Net, a novel deep learning model that combines multi-scale convolutional layers and MLP-Mixer-based channel learning to effectively model spatial and spectral dependencies. For evaluation, we constructed a high-resolution RGB-HSI paired dataset by capturing basil leaves under controlled conditions. Through ablation studies and band combination analysis, we assessed the model’s ability to recover spectral information. The experimental results showed that the G-RGB input consistently outperformed unmodified RGB across multiple metrics, including mean squared error (MSE), peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), spectral correlation coefficient (SCC), and structural similarity (SSIM), with the best performance observed when paired with FUSE-Net. While our method does not replace true NIR data, it offers a viable approximation during inference when only RGB images are available, supporting cost-effective analysis in scenarios where HSI systems are inaccessible. In this study, we extend this framework to a binary classification by employing a U-Net based deterministic autoencoder augmented with attention blocks to analyze HSI data of sesame plants inoculated with Pseudomonas syringae pv. sesami. Single-band grayscale images across the full spectral range were used to train the model on healthy samples, while the presence of disease was classified by assessing the reconstruction error, which we refer to as the anomaly score. The average classification accuracy in the visible region spectrum (430–689 nm) exceeded 0.8, with peaks at 641 nm and 689 nm. In comparison, the near-infrared region (>700 nm) attained an accuracy of approximately 0.6. Several visible bands demonstrated potential for early disease detection. Some lesion samples showed a gradual increase in anomaly scores over time, and notably, Band 23 (689 nm) exhibited exceeded anomaly scores even at early stages before visible symptoms appeared. This supports the potential of this wavelength for the early-stage detection of bacterial leaf spots in sesame. Full article

AetherGeo is a standalone piece of software (current version 1.0) that aims to enable the user to analyze raster data, with a special focus on processing multi- and hyperspectral images. Being developed in Python 3.12.4, this application is a free, open-source alternative for spectral analysis, something considered beneficial for researchers, allowing for a flexible approach to start working on the topic without acquiring proprietary software licenses. It provides the user with a set of tools for spectral data analysis through classical approaches, such as band ratios and RGB combinations, but also more elaborate techniques, such as endmember extraction and unsupervised image classification with partial spectral unmixing techniques. While it has been tested on visible and near-infrared (VNIR), short-wave infrared (SWIR), and VNIR-SWIR datasets, the functions implemented have the potential to be applied to other spectral ranges. On top of this, all results can be visualized within the software, and some tools allow for the inspection and comparison of spectra and spectral libraries. Providing software with these capabilities in a unified platform has the potential to positively impact research and education, as students and educators usually have limited access to proprietary software. Fruit quality testing plays a crucial role in the advancement of fruit industry, which is related to market competitiveness, consumer satisfaction and production process optimization. In recent years, nondestructive testing technology has become a research hotspot due to its outstanding advantages. In this paper, the principle, application, advantages and disadvantages of optical, acoustic, electromagnetics, dielectric properties research and electronic nose non-destructive testing technology in fruit quality testing are systematically reviewed. These technologies can detect a variety of chemical components of fruit, realize the assessment of maturity, damage degree, disease degree, and are suitable for orchard picking, quality grading, shelf life prediction and other fields. However, there are limitations to these techniques. The optical, acoustic and electronic nose technologies are susceptible to environmental factors, the electromagnetic technology has defects in the detection of complex molecules and fruit internal quality, and the dielectric characteristics are greatly affected by the shape and state of the sample surface. In the future, efforts should be made to enhance the implementation of non-destructive testing technology in the fruit industry through technology integration, optimization algorithm, cost reduction, and expansion of industrial chain application, so as to help the premium growth of the fruit industry. Although, the use of sensors is increasing in a wide range of fields with great success (e.g., food, environment, pharma, etc.), their uptake is slow and lower than other innovations. While the uptake is low, some users, producers, and service industries are continuing to benefit from the incorporation of technology in their business. Among these technologies, vibrational spectroscopy has demonstrated its benefits and versatility in a wide range of applications. Both conventional near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy and hyperspectral imaging (HSI) systems are two of the main techniques utilized in a wide range of applications in different fields. These techniques use the NIR region of the electromagnetic spectrum (750–2500 nm). Specifically, NIR-HSI systems provide spatial information and spectral data, while conventional NIR spectroscopy provides spectral information from a single point. Even though there is a clear distinction between both techniques in terms of their benefits, confusion still exists among users about their similarities and differences. This paper provides a critical discussion of the main advantages and limitations of both techniques, focusing on food science applications. Full article
