Current geological site assessment models focus on examining stable natural features and neglect measuring surrounding industrial and environmental hazards. This methodological deficiency is clearly evident in the management of technological heritage in existing or abandoned mining areas. This research presents the modified GAMGES geo-environmental assessment model to address this practical gap in the regional planning of industrial geoparks. The proposed model integrates the geo-environmental safety (GES) block as a mathematical discount factor that measures the risks of surface deformation, seismic activity, gas emissions, and pollution from mining waste. The research applies the developed criteria to the Kirov Mine database in the Kuzbass Basin, renowned for its combined technological and geodynamic characteristics. The numerical results demonstrate a lower overall site value compared to the conventional model due to the detection of active ground fissures and continuous methane migration across tectonic faults. The model provides planners with a quantitative decision support framework for dividing industrial heritage sites into multiple safety zones that ensure visitor protection and the security of sustainable tourism facilities. Urban greening studies have traditionally emphasized vegetation quantity, while the perceptual implications of horticultural composition and spatial configuration remain less clearly understood. This study investigated how horticultural configurations were associated with multidimensional landscape perception across 10 urban parks in Chengdu, China. A total of 500 standardized landscape images, comprising 50 images per park, were assessed by 150 participants across 17 perceptual dimensions. Vegetation composition, spatial configuration, and conventional greenness indicators were quantified from the images and park-level spatial data. Principal component analysis and PERMANOVA were used to characterize structural gradients among parks, while exploratory factor analysis was used to identify integrated perceptual domains. XGBoost models with five-fold cross-validation were subsequently developed to predict individual perceptual outcomes, and SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) were applied to interpret feature contributions and nonlinear response patterns. Multi-objective optimization was further used to explore hypothetical configuration scenarios involving trade-offs among perceptual objectives. The first two structural principal components explained 65.60% of the variation in horticultural composition and spatial organization, and park configurations differed significantly (PERMANOVA: F = 166.66, p = 0.001). Horticultural typologies differed across 15 of the 17 perceptual dimensions (all p < 0.001), with the largest differentiation observed for nature (ε2 = 0.270), species richness (ε2 = 0.259), openness (ε2 = 0.251), being away (ε2 = 0.245), serenity (ε2 = 0.236), and enclosure (ε2 = 0.234). The XGBoost models showed consistently strong predictive performance, with test-set R2 values of 0.692–0.812 and cross-validated R2 values of 0.756–0.796. SHAP analyses indicated differentiated and nonlinear associations: vegetation continuity and enclosure were primarily related to restorative immersion, open configurations to spatial accessibility, and ornamental and compositional complexity to affective richness. The optimization results further identified continuous trade-offs among restorative immersion, spatial openness, and affective richness, rather than a single universally optimal configuration. These findings show that landscape perception is associated with the spatial organization and composition of horticultural elements through multidimensional and nonlinear pathways. The study therefore extends vegetation-quantity assessments by providing a configuration-based analytical framework for exploring perceptually balanced urban horticultural environments. Full article

As urban renewal shifts from expansion-led development toward quality improvement of existing urban areas, the restorative quality of urban village public spaces has become an important concern in high-density human settlements. Existing restorative environment research has focused mainly on parks, green spaces, waterfronts, and other settings with strong natural attributes, while audio–visual studies have often examined environmental perception, restorative appraisal, or physiological response as separate analytical components. Limited evidence therefore exists on how scene-level visual and acoustic characteristics, subjective sensory appraisal, perceived restoration, and short-term physiological responses are related within the same analytical framework in high-density urban village public spaces. This study investigated six selected public spaces in Shenzhen urban villages using a VR-based repeated-measures experiment involving 33 participants and 198 participant–scene observations, together with computer vision indicators, psychoacoustic analysis, subjective evaluation, EDA and HRV monitoring, linear mixed-effects models, and multilevel models of statistical indirect associations. Green view index (B = 0.322, p < 0.001) and color complexity (B = 0.422, p < 0.001) were positively associated with perceived restoration, whereas building enclosure (B = −0.271, p < 0.001) and sound roughness (B = −0.328, p < 0.001) were negatively associated with perceived restoration. Green view index showed a positive indirect association with perceived restoration through visual perception (ab = 0.386, 95% CI [0.304, 0.484]), whereas roughness showed a negative indirect association through soundscape perception (ab = −0.277, 95% CI [−0.385, −0.176]). In the full six-scene models, negative objective interaction estimates were compatible with acoustic constraints on favorable visual associations, but several interaction coefficients were sensitive to scene omission and should be regarded as exploratory; at the subjective level, soundscape perception and visual perception showed a positive interaction (B = 0.095, p = 0.028). Leave-one-scene-out analysis showed that several scene-level main-effect and objective interaction estimates were sensitive to the omission of S5 or S2, whereas the directions of the green-view-index and roughness indirect associations were retained. Perceived restoration was positively correlated with the reversed EDA recovery score (r = 0.416, p < 0.001), whereas HRV showed a negative association with LAeq (B = −0.150, p = 0.008), suggesting different short-term response patterns across subjective and physiological measures. The findings suggest that restorative responses in the examined urban village scenes were associated with both subjective sensory appraisal and audio–visual interactions. The study contributes by integrating scene-level visual and acoustic characteristics, subjective sensory appraisal, perceived restoration, and short-term physiological responses within a high-density urban village context. For renewal practice, the results support the coordinated consideration of adverse sound sources, visible greenness, and visual order; however, the observed relationships should be interpreted as context-specific associations rather than as universal causal mechanisms or validated design thresholds. Gut microbiota plays an important role in host metabolism, immunity, and environmental adaptation, yet its response to contrasting wintering habitats in migratory waterbirds remains poorly understood. We compared the gut microbiota of whooper swans (Cygnus cygnus) wintering in a natural riverine habitat (Swan Bay, Hejing County) and an urban wetland habitat (Worker’s Park, Korla City) in Xinjiang, China. A total of 34 fresh fecal samples were analyzed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. We identified 2207 operational taxonomic units (OTUs), of which 734 were shared between habitats, indicating the presence of a conserved core microbiota. The urban wetland group exhibited a significantly higher Simpson index, whereas beta diversity analysis revealed significant differences in community structure between habitats (p < 0.05). Both groups were dominated by Firmicutes, Fusobacteriota, Proteobacteria, Campylobacterota, and Bacteroidota, although their relative abundances differed markedly. LEfSe analysis identified distinct habitat-associated taxa, and PICRUSt2 prediction suggested greater enrichment of metabolism-related pathways in the natural riverine group. Overall, wintering habitat was associated with differences in gut microbial composition and predicted function, providing new insight into the ecological adaptation of migratory waterbirds under contrasting environmental conditions. Continuous carbon anode roasting in industrial parks requires a stable high-temperature heat supply and remains highly dependent on grid electricity and natural gas. However, existing energy-system studies rarely coordinate hydrogen production and storage, volumetric hydrogen blending, and temperature-graded waste-heat recovery under continuous production constraints. To address this gap, this study proposes an electricity–heat–gas–hydrogen integrated energy system for carbon anode industrial parks and develops a 24 h multi-objective scheduling model. The model coordinates heat demands at different temperature levels with hourly electricity and hydrogen flows, using surplus photovoltaic power to produce hydrogen for later high-load periods. The selected scheme achieves a daily volumetric hydrogen-blending ratio of 10.79%, with an operating cost of 82,985.75 CNY and carbon emissions of 54,371.53 kg. Relative to an otherwise equivalent non-hydrogen configuration, hydrogen coupling provides additional reductions of 7.2% in operating cost and 2.3% in carbon emissions. Compared with a basic conventional configuration, operating cost and carbon emissions decrease by 27.9% and 26.0%, respectively. Cascade recovery also increases the daily waste-heat utilization rate by approximately 30 percentage points. These results show that the proposed scheduling framework can coordinate hydrogen utilization and graded waste-heat recovery while maintaining continuous carbon anode production. Full article

Public parks support health, wellbeing, and social inclusion, yet conventional wayfinding approaches remain largely focused on physical mobility and directional navigation, often overlooking the cognitive and sensory experiences of neurodivergent users. This study develops a theory-informed framework for neuroinclusive wayfinding design through an integrative literature review. Using a Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA)-informed protocol, 106 core sources were synthesized from landscape architecture, environmental psychology, public health, and neurodiversity research. A qualitative theory-building approach combining thematic analysis, theoretical mapping, and abductive synthesis identified four themes: Cognitive Navigation and Environmental Legibility, Sensory Processing and Environmental Regulation, Restorative Landscapes and Nature-Based Wellbeing, and Inclusive, Adaptive, and Neurodiverse Design. These themes were subsequently translated into eight environmental challenges and operationalized into eight neuroinclusive wayfinding design criteria organized within four support domains. The resulting framework conceptualizes wayfinding as a cognitive–sensory support system rather than a purely navigational function, linking interdisciplinary evidence to practical landscape architectural design strategies. By integrating fragmented knowledge across multiple disciplines, the study provides a foundation for future validation and the advancement of neuroinclusive public park design. Full article

Urban parks, as ubiquitous spaces, are vital in enhancing people’s quality of life owing to their significant ecological benefits. However, urban parks have not achieved full age inclusivity, failing in particular to prioritize the youth demographic. Against this background, this study focused on college students as a representative youth group. Grounded in Symbolic Interactionism theory and employing structural equation modeling (SEM) for data analysis, it evaluated how young people’s perceptions of urban parks correlate with recommendation intentions through place attachment. The results showed the following: (1) beyond the natural perceptions of a park, perceptions about activities and facilities are significantly positively associated with recommendation intentions; (2) perceptions of nature, activities, and facilities correlate markedly and positively with place dependence, and perceptions of nature, activities, and facilities correlate markedly and positively with place identification; and (3) place attachment and place identification exerted chained mediating effects between perceptions of urban parks and recommendation intentions. These results provide implications for planners and designers to upgrade the internal symbols of public facilities, such as urban parks, and offer practical value for deepening interactions with the youth group. Urban green open spaces play a critical role in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing biodiversity in rapidly urbanizing tropical megacities. This study aims to characterize vegetation structure and species diversity, as well as quantify above-ground carbon stocks in Taman Bendera Pusaka, South Jakarta, Indonesia. The results are expected to inform evaluations of urban parks’ contribution as nature-based solutions. A complete tree census was conducted between August and September 2025, recording diameter at breast height, height, and species identity for all individuals. Above-ground biomass (AGB) for woody trees was estimated using a widely applied pantropical allometric model developed for humid tropical forests, while separate generalized equations were applied respectively to the palms and bamboos groups to account for their distinct morphological characteristics. The estimated biomass values were subsequently converted into carbon stocks and CO2 equivalents. Biodiversity was evaluated using Margalef richness, Shannon–Wiener diversity, and Pielou’s evenness indices. A total of 2459 individuals were recorded. Langsat Park had the highest species richness (S = 79) with diversity (H′ = 3.38; E = 0.77), and Leuser (S = 78) with highest diversity (H′ = 3.44; E = 0.79), whereas Ayodya Parks showed the lowest structures and diversity values (S = 33; H′ = 2.18; E = 0.68). Total AGB reached 5873.63 Mg, with a mean carbon density of 444.64 Mg C ha−1 or 1631.82 Mg CO2 ha−1. Carbon storage was largely driven by a few dominant ornamental palms, particularly Roystonea regia, although native canopy trees contributed to structural stability. These findings show that even relatively small tropical urban parks can serve as significant localized carbon storage while sustaining urban biodiversity, underscoring the value of structurally diverse, native-enriched planting strategies for resilient urban forest management. For this project, we surveyed small mammal communities in protected forest habitats of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, Portugal, to establish a robust baseline for conservation planning. Our study provides a dataset and accompanying information to support an empirical framework for assessing the environmental determinants of small mammal occurrence across diverse habitats. These habitats encompass the park’s main forested areas within the UNESCO-designated landscape of the Sintra Mountain Range. Field sampling was conducted in two periods (2018 and 2024–2025) across six areas, comprising a total of 43 sites representative of the dominant habitat types within each location. A combination of live trapping, hair sampling, and camera trapping was employed, which enabled the detection of ten small mammal species, four Eulipotyphla and six Rodentia. The final dataset, derived from an extensive sampling effort of 8820 trap-nights, comprises a total of 792 specimen records. The complementary sampling approaches contributed differently to species detection, with live trapping recording the highest species richness and camera trapping generating the greatest number of detections. Obtained data provide critical support to inform the design and implementation of integrated, evidence-based conservation actions to sustain stable small mammal populations over the long term. Perceptions of Mountain National Parks by Tourists, Guides, and Park Employees: A Preliminary Study

The growing volume of tourism in European mountain national parks has resulted in numerous conflicts between nature conservation and the expectations of various stakeholder groups. Exceeding ecological and social carrying capacities has led to an ongoing debate on implementing visitor limits and further restrictions, the effectiveness of which strongly depends on public understanding and acceptance. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to assess the level of knowledge regarding the general system of nature conservation, attitudes toward potential regulations, and their impact on conservation and tourism development across three stakeholder groups. A non-probability, purposive-convenience sampling strategy was utilized due to the specific characteristics of the surveyed stakeholder groups. The research was conducted using an online questionnaire distributed to tourists, mountain guides, and employees of the Babia Góra, Gorce, Pieniny, and Tatra National Parks, resulting in a total sample of 106 respondents. Statistical differences among the national parks employees (n = 24), mountain guides (n = 42) and tourists (n = 40) were analyzed using the Fisher–Freeman–Halton exact test due to violated Chi-square assumptions, supplemented by Cramér’s V for effect size. The study demonstrated that national park employees and mountain guides possessed significantly higher factual knowledge regarding biodiversity threats and zoning regulations compared to tourists. Significant differences among stakeholder groups were confirmed across multiple dimensions (p = 0.005 to 0.05), with Cramér’s V values indicating moderate relationships (V = 0.21 to 0.26). Conversely, national park employees and tourists expressed stronger support for expanding protected areas, whereas mountain guides more frequently associated new national parks with tourism restrictions. Moreover, the majority of respondents across all stakeholder groups agreed that: (i) nature protection is the main goal of national park establishment; (ii) educational activities are the most effective methods of protecting nature from tourism-related threats; (iii) leaving trails should be banned in all national parks, and (iv) seasonal limits on tourist entry should be obligatory in the most frequently visited parks. The lack of significant differences was confirmed by statistical test (p = 0.08–0.93). Considering the findings of this preliminary investigation, it is suggested that future research directions should include additional stakeholder groups and encompass a wider geographical area. The design of urban pedestrian–cycling routes is of great importance for the sustainable development of cities. Properly designed routes encourage the use of sustainable modes of transport. They also bring numerous environmental and social benefits. The study examines how greenery and spatial characteristics influence citizens’ aesthetic perception of pedestrian and cycling corridors. The Scenic Beauty Estimation (SBE) method was used to assess visual landscape quality based on users’ subjective evaluations. A total of 301 participants evaluated 20 photographs taken in Lublin, Poland, depicting different types of urban routes, including sidewalks, cycling paths, and park pathways, using a five-point rating scale. Statistical analyses (ANOVA, post hoc tests, and composite and differential variable analyses) were conducted to identify patterns in preferences. The results indicate that greenery is the dominant factor shaping landscape preferences across all age and gender groups. Age plays a stronger role than gender in differentiating evaluations: younger participants prefer more natural and greener environments, whereas older participants favor more ordered and less green spaces. Gender effects are limited and primarily relate to preferences for natural landscapes. An additional finding concerns the role of benches, which were most preferred by younger and middle-aged women, suggesting a broader social and functional interpretation of this element. Overall, the results highlight the importance of greenery in shaping the perceived attractiveness of urban routes. They also indicate the key spatial features that encourage people to use these routes, which affects the use of sustainable modes of transport as well as residents’ health. They also demonstrate the usefulness of the SBE method in planning, design and managing user-friendly and sustainable urban routes. Full article

To reveal the chemical composition and concentration distribution, spatial distribution characteristics, source composition, and health impacts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the two multi-industry industrial parks in Tianjin, 57 VOC species were determined by using SUMMA canister sampling with preconcentration gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Based on these measurements, the Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model was used for source analysis to achieve quantitative identification and contribution analysis of different source factors. The health risks of VOC concentrations were analyzed based on the assessment framework recommended by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). The results showed that the average concentrations of TVOCs in A-1 (Industrial Park and Cluster A, 5 m), A-2 (Industrial Park and Cluster A, 10 m), B-1 (Industrial Park and Cluster B, 5 m), and B-2 (Industrial Park and Cluster B, 10 m) were 59.72 ppbv, 45.35 ppbv, 32.44 ppbv, and 21.65 ppbv, respectively. TVOC concentrations were higher at A-1 and B-1 than at A-2 and B-2, and were generally higher at site A than at site B. The VOC components were mainly alkanes (53.5%–71.4%), followed by aromatic hydrocarbons (15.6%–36.2%), alkenes (4.6%–9.9%), and alkynes (3.1%–7.6%). The proportion of aromatic hydrocarbons in A was higher (22.13% and 36.22%), while alkanes dominated absolutely in B (71.4% and 66.9%). n-Hexane was the key species driving the spatial differences (a typical source of VOCs in solvent usage). The concentration in A-1 was 3.1 times that of A-2, and B-1 was 3.3 times that of B-2. It was mainly controlled by local solvent unorganized emissions. The differences in species between the two points at site A for toluene, xylene, etc., were relatively gentle, while at site B, the concentration of the same aromatic hydrocarbons at B-1 was significantly higher than that at B-2, presenting a clearer spatial characteristic, indicating differences in the spatial distribution of organic solvent-related industrial activities in different sites. The source analysis showed that A-1 was dominated by solvent usage (38.64%) and natural gas/LPG sources (36.96%); A-2 by vehicle exhaust (40.20%) and natural gas/LPG sources (36.15%); B-1 by cleaning-agent usage (38.81%) and fuel combustion (30.33%); and B-2 by plastic and rubber production (36.90%) and fuel combustion (31.84%). The health risk assessment showed that benzene, n-hexane, and xylene dominated the non-carcinogenic risks, but the overall non-carcinogenic (HI < 1) and carcinogenic (CR < 1 × 10−6) risks were both below the threshold. This study reveals inter-site differences in VOC concentrations, compositions, and source contributions across two mixed industrial parks, providing a basis for site-specific VOC control priorities, source-targeted monitoring strategies, and risk management in mixed industrial areas. Landscape Character Assessment (LCA) has struggled with scale mismatches and inadequate treatment of cultural expression when applied to high-density cultural landscapes in Asia. On the Chengdu Plain, Western Sichuan, China, remote sensing shows convergent settlement patterns across case sites, but fieldwork reveals substantial divergences in landscape character. We examined five cases representing different rural development models in the Chengdu metropolitan area. By integrating 10 m Sentinel-2 imagery and with systematic fieldwork (3200 photographs and 42 semi-structured interviews, July–August 2023), we constructed a framework that combines macro-scale spatial analysis with micro-scale field investigation. For macro-level quantification, six landscape pattern indices were adopted: number of patches (NP), patch density (PD), contagion index (CONTAG), aggregation index (AI), Shannon’s diversity index (SHDI), and Shannon’s evenness index (SHEI). The micro-level investigation followed a three-tier scheme (natural environment, settlement space, architectural details) to record vertical ecological communities, spatial expressions of cultural embeddedness, and visual landscape character. Indicator screening employed the KJ method and two rounds of Delphi consultation with ten experts; weights were then determined through the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). Macro-level results display a clustered, low-fragmentation pattern (woodland AI = 97.48, water body AI = 99.40), anchored by a stable mosaic of Linpan, farmland, water bodies, and homesteads. Micro-level features include multi-strata vertical communities of trees, shrubs, grasses, and water, along with cultural embeddedness expressed through irrigation systems, farming patterns, and courtyard layouts. The VLEAS (Vernacular Landscape Elements Assessment System) framework encompasses three dimensions (natural, cultural, and visual) and comprises 12 indicators. The cultural dimension receives the highest weight (0.42), followed by natural (0.32) and visual (0.26) dimensions. Comparative analysis shows that the framework differentiates cases with similar macro-scale patterns but divergent micro-features, capturing differences that a purely macro-index benchmark misses, and it also reveals trade-offs among ecological integrity, cultural heritage, and visual quality. Sensitivity analysis displays that case rankings remain stable across four extreme weighting scenarios (cultural, ecological, visual, equal), with only one swap (Xingfu Pastoral Park and Nongke Village) under ecological priority and no rank change greater than one position, confirming that the results are not driven by any specific weight assignment. This approach extends the utility of LCA in high-density rural cultural landscapes and offers a practical tool for differentiated conservation and management, especially in tourism-influenced rural settings on the Chengdu Plain. Transferability to other regions would require recalibration of locally relevant indicators. Full article

Understanding how park visitor experiences contribute to visitor satisfaction is essential for promoting sustainable tourism in protected natural areas. While prior research has established a positive relationship between tourist experiences and satisfaction, less attention has been paid to examining the influence of experience dimensions and their influence on psychological outcomes. By applying three tourist experience dimensions (learning, enjoyment, and escape), this study examined the structural relationships among perceived restorativeness, happiness, and satisfaction among national park visitors in Kazakhstan. Using structural equation modeling, the study examined 253 park visitors’ responses collected from February to April 2025 to test hypotheses. The results revealed that learning, enjoyment, and escape all positively influenced perceived restorativeness. Perceived restorativeness, in turn, significantly enhanced happiness and satisfaction, while happiness also had a positive effect on satisfaction. Moreover, all three experience dimensions exerted significant indirect effects on satisfaction through perceived restorativeness and through the sequential pathway of perceived restorativeness and happiness. Theoretically, the study contributes to the understanding of tourist experience and psychological benefits in a national park setting. Practically, the results highlight the importance of providing psychological restoration experiences to enhance connections to nature among tourists. Full article

Direct evidence on curbside parking use in intermediate Latin American cities remains limited. This study characterized parking duration, purpose, turnover, accumulation, and regulatory compliance across six segment–date sessions in central Loja, Ecuador. Of 1426 observed curbside events, 1397 were retained after quality control. Analyses included descriptive and non-parametric tests, multivariable models with CR2 standard errors clustered by segment–date, and sensitivity analyses. Duration was strongly right-skewed (median 4 min; interquartile range 1–13 min; mean 36.3 min; P95 332.6 min), while passenger pick-up/drop-off accounted for 54.5% of events. Non-permitted maneuvers represented 64.0%. The four segment-sessions containing SIMERT coverage comprised 862 valid events, of which 776 occurred within marked SIMERT locations. Among the 644 marked-location events observed during payment-required hours, visible SIMERT use was recorded in 70 events (10.9%). After restricting the SIMERT component to marked locations during payment-required hours, composite non-compliance was identified in 1167 events (83.5%). During the common 06:30–18:30 comparison window, hourly turnover ranged from 0.54 to 1.96 events per legal space per hour, while cumulative space–time demand ranged from 11.6% to 154.8% of nominal legal space–time capacity. The value above 100% represents summed parking duration relative to nominal legal capacity and does not indicate simultaneous occupancy above 100%. Excluding session-boundary proxies left the median and interquartile range unchanged, although upper-tail estimates remained sensitive. Because each segment was observed on a single date, between-session differences cannot be interpreted as independent corridor effects. Natural-spline specifications provided better temporal fit than linear-hour specifications for both non-permitted maneuvers and revised composite non-compliance. These findings provide a reproducible local baseline for testing conventional and smart curb-management measures through repeated pilot studies. Full article
